All the meat was delicious, and I love the soda selection. Plus, great chips and salsa.

Having passed this place many times and wondering about the food (I mean it's a gas station turned eatery for crying out loud!).... we finally tried it today and it was FANTASTIC! Our only complaint was a piece or two of chewy fat on our pork tacos. The selection is awesome. The food is FRESH. The grease on this greasy spoon is actually MINIMAL. There are many fun sodas and other treats that one would find at a Mexican/Latin market. We had the tacos today and the green salsa is VERY spicy but I loved it as I like flaming hot food. We will most certainly be back again.

If you don't eat here when you are in Vernal, you're a fool. Hands down some of the best Mexican I've ever had. Somebody needs to get the food network here pronto. You can't go wrong with anything you order it's all perfect.

  • Liana R.

Food was great, big portions - 4 of us ordered meals and we took one large and one small to go box of leftovers. We tried the smoothered burrito plate, enchilada plate, a chili releno burrito and a picallato plate. Try the haracho, it was delicious! A huge selection of Jarritos had us trying a couple flavors we hadn't seen before.

  • Jaime S.

We shared a smothered spicy pork burrito and a steak torta (sandwich) and both were fantastic! Thank you Yelpers for recommending!

  • Brian A.

I stopped by for lunch the other day - food was excellent, and owner was very friendly!

  • Heather B.

We had the steak burritos. Amazing. Had to go back on our way home they were so good.

    (5)
  • Peter M.

Amazing food every time, one problem is they are way too expensive same burrito in SoCal would cost 4.50 I know it's vernal but jeez laweez.

  • Mike D.

I got the lengua burrito ($8!!!! and not even a super burrito!) and my wife got the Carnitas Enchiladas (we also split an order of chips and salsa. I give the service 2 star (out of 5). The lady running the show had to ask three times what my wife wanted. The food was sort of slow, perhaps average for this type of establishment. Price: I'll give them a 1 star rating for the value. They are seriously overpriced for what they offer, which is quite literally NO AMBIENCE. I felt like I was eating in a gas station (oh wait, I was... Or at least a converted gas station). Back home (San Jose, CA area), I can get a much larger and better tasting super burrito for about the same price. The chips were soggy and muy greasy. The lengua burrito was decent, but nothing special. The carnitas enchiladas were greasy and nasty. I honestly can't tell you if there are better Mexican places around here, but if there aren't, I feel bad for the residents of Vernal, Utah...

Eating here is just like being in Mexico! I wish you were not a 3 hour drive from the house! If you like real Tacos go here!

This place is a gem among the dust and sand of Vernal, Utah. The food was amazing, I can say that with 100% confidence after eating Mexican food in Arizona, New Mexico, Texas and Colorado. We were traveling through Utah and we are so glad we stopped in Vernal. Please do not let obvious amateur tongueless reviewers fool you, this place is an oasis in the desert. They got a mini mart that comes in handy while passing by, we drove from Denver and will stop again if our travels takes us nearby for sure. Eat here if you want to taste greatness!

  • Gloria P.

I travel out West at least once a year and make a point to stop here when I stay over in Vernal. I'm also careful not to arrive on a Sunday as they are closed. Not much good food to be had in Vernal and this place is tops on my list.

  • Sean C.

Really good Mexican street food. Quesadillas were very, very tasty. Veggie burrito was the perfect size. Felt satisfied but not stuffed.

  • Liz C.

Great, if simple, tacos. Very flavorful meat cooked with onions and cilantro. I got the steak, it was delicious. I also tried he Chile Relleno burrito because, duh. Two great things in one? Almost. The cheese in the Chile Relleno is cheez-wiz- like. Not my favorite. I'd recommend going for the tacos. You can also pick up Mexican goods (candies, snacks, glass bottle Coke, piñatas, etc.).

    (3)
  • Matthew G.

Quite possibly the best tacos I've ever had. The guy behind the grill recommended the steak tacos or spicy pork tacos. I got two of both and now that I finished, I wish I had got two more. Not because it wasn't filling enough but because they were so tasty they made you want more! I'm in town till Monday and I might go everyday.

  • Bill B.

Surly service and mediocre food. We were visiting from out of town, our first trip here, my wife asked what he would recommend. Response was a surly "I don't know what you would like, I don't know you" While technically correct, this is not the way it is done when nicely asking for help. We will not return .

  • Stefanie A.

This place was ridiculously good! Really enjoyed the Mexican coke in glass bottles. My boys tore up the carne quesadilla and the carne asada burrito tasted great. I'm pretty sure the tortillas are homemade. Dessert was "Mazapanes caseros"-- a Mexican peanut confection. Great stop on our road trip.

  • Christopher P.

This restaurant is housed in an old, long-since shutdown gas station. Authentic bottled Mexican beverages are housed in the original gas station coolers. There's a couple of aisles of authentic Mexican groceries as well. On the cashier's recommendation, I had the carné asada burrito smothered in green chili. The steak was seasoned very well. Take it from a green chili snob - the green chili here was very good. Reasonable prices (my burrito was $7, our group of three ate for $30 with beverages). Quick service, too. It's not saying much, but this has been the best bite of food I've had in Vernal.

  • Mary G.

AWESOME food in this hole in the wall! Were traveling through on a road trip and had serious doubts that we would find any good food in such a small town, but as soon as we saw this place was located in an old gas station we knew the food had to be good. Again, amazing, fresh, delicious food and the owners were super friendly. Another plus, it has a little market inside with hispanic foods and I found my favorite Peruvian Aji Amarillo paste that's difficult to find in the US, for $2.99! I bought them out of it. :) If we ever swing through Vernal again we will be stopping here again for sure!

I am visiting from LA. I have had hundreds of tacos in L.A. (Including but not limited to East LA King Taco) and in Mexico. The tacos and burritos at Gordo are very good. I had it for dinner last night and again today for lunch before leaving town. I especially liked the spicy pork, carnitas and asada tacos. Highly recommend this place.

  • D C J.

Don't know if the owner if deaf, just doesn't pay attention or the ladies in the kitchen don't read English but I've gone twice, ordered cheese enchiladas got chicken enchiladas. Second time bean and cheese burrito, got beef bean and cheese. Plus burrito $9? That's nuts.

The Best Mexican food in Town! Authentic Mexican Food. Friendly

  • David R.

Don't let the looks of this place stop you from eating there. It used to be a gas station and they have done very little to upgrade the look. The food here is amazing. I tried one of their burritos for lunch and it was excellent. I will definitely eat here again.

    (5)
  • Travis C.

This is hands down some of the best mexican food i have ever had. The outside looks a little rough but you can see the area where the food is prepared so there is no question about the cleanliness of the place. The owner is super friendly and really takes pride in his food. Check it out, you won't be disappointed.

My travel companions [on this work related road trip] have a thing...well more than a thing, let's call it an obsession, with Mexican food. Every town we have stopped in throughout Utah [or en route to our next stop] the first thing they look for is a Mexican restaurant. Using my trusty Yelp app we found Tacos El Gordo. Located in an old gas station [the pumps and awning are still present but inoperable]. It can look quite "sketch" or intimidating. There is definitely nothing fancy about this place but don't let all that turn you back. For those who like to explore off the beaten path when it comes to food this is a worthy stop. Inside you will find a small bodega [latino food mini-mart] and a simple menu stretched above the ordering/pick-up windows. Burritos, tortas, tacos with the choice of 6 or so different meats (including lengua and tripitas) are the featured items on the menu, as well as combo plates of the above with rice and beans, chile rellenos and menudo (available everyday). The carne asada torta I ordered on this visit was very good. Quality bread and plenty of meat and great flavor. The salsas available [red and green] were house made, flavorful and packed on some heat that gradually sneaked up on you. I could not decide which one I liked more. My cohorts ordered burritos, both came with rice and beans on the inside They were expecting more meat, only slightly disappointed, it didn't dissuade them much. They offered a wide selection of Mexican and Central American beverage favorites (sodas, bottles juice/Jumex, malta, etc) I was looking for a fresh agua fresca. The man taking my order mentioned they didn't have any made up but they had horchata that they make in house and said it was "muy rico" [very good]. He pointed to one of the large refrigerator doors to two glass barrels one appeared to be tamarind agua fresca and the other horchata. Ordering a large drink, he pointed to the cups and again back at the fridge [it was self serve]. Stirring the large ladle through to the bottom of the container to get any bits of rice or cinnamon dispersed back into the mix, I scooped out my first ladle full of what I would later find to be some of the best horchata I have ever had. Perfectly sweet not overly milky, the course (yet small) bits of rice and cinnamon that made their way to the bottom of my cup gave away the fact they used whole cinnamon sticks in the process and ground them together with the rice. That was lunch. My travel companions went back for dinner that night, lunch the next day and an afternoon burrito for the road. When they went back for lunch I requested a bag of what appeared to be house made chicharones (pork rinds), that I noticed the day before, a small bottle of hot sauce and another cup of horchata. When we stopped on the way out of town, while they ate their burritos I sat and slowly enjoyed my large cup of horchata. Long story short, this is a quality, authentic Mexican restaurant with limited (but available) dine-in seating which also serves the community as a latino market.

The best tacos and burritos in all the land, it's not mexican-american food, it is pure Mexican food!!

    (5)
  • Bob Z.

Had a steak burrito - definitely one of the better ones I've had. There's a few things to keep in mind though: It was more expensive than I thought - the burrito by itself was $7. There also are no garnishes as shown in the pictures on the menu, which is a bit misleading. In the drink cases at the back you can find some hot sauces you can use. Overall a pretty unique experience - felt like we were in Mexico at a little run down place, and the food was definitely tasty.

While yes, the ambience of this place leaves something to be desired, the food is authentic, and outstanding. (Really, if you want ambience, it's obvious this is not your place, although there is something sort of charming about it.) We had recently lived in San Diego, the Mexican food capital of the country, and had been very disappointed in any Mexican food since. However, this place had very good food. I had a carne Asada taco, a pork taco (can't recall what the pork was called-not carnitas) and a chile relleno. My husband had a huge pork burrito. We thought everything was outstanding and delicious. The owner spent lots of time telling us about the various choices, and clearly took pride in his restaurant. (One of the previous reviews said the service was slow...this is not a fast food joint...they cook your food AFTER you put in your order). We were clearly going to have the option of really mediocre food at other restaurants in town, or eat great Mexican food here. Go for the great Mexican, and deal with the ambience!

  • Liz V.

Loved this place. Best meal in Vernal I've experienced yet! Ate the entire smothered burrito and will do it again next time I am in town.

  • Kathy H.

It's basically a home base for a taco truck at an old gas station. Fast taco truck food. Nothing fancy and not a lot of selections. There is also a little Mexican market inside w about 5 tables to sit down. The tacos were good.

The only question I have is "when do I get to come back to Vernal?" Undoubtedly, Tacos el Gordo will be my first stop! Tasty authentic food at a very reasonable price. Just ask for a recommendation from the staff an you won't go wrong.

    (5)
  • Clint M.

Excellent. Taco-truck-style fare (in the best possible way) made with fresh-tasting ingredients. Don't be dissuaded by the old gas station setting. Worth the stop.

  • Joey C.

This is easily the best food in Vernal, Utah. Traditional style Mexican that clearly has it's roots in familial history. Tacos, burritos (also come smothered), tortas, plates and quesadillas are all delicious. The simple menu with succinct choices and prices has the feel of a true taco stand that would be up there with the best in any major city. They also offer up a variety of unique imported drinks and market products which makes it a great option for non-American ingredients. Overall, this place is a must if you find yourself located in the Jensen/Vernal area.

  • Michael W.

What a find! I passed by this place before looking at reviews and thought I definitely won't be going there. After reading the reviews I'm so glad I came! The place is quaint, clean and very friendly. The owner chatted with us while we were eating. Really nice guy. And best burritos ever. Get it smothered. Best food in Vernal. This place could hold their own anywhere I think.

    (5)
  • Leah L.

This is a great taco joint for Vernal. I had the smothered burrito with carnitas and it was delish. I especially liked the crispy bits of carnitas. I will definitely return next time I am in Vernal. I can't wait to try the quesadilla.

    (4)
  • JP O.

Unprepossessing facade of a redone gas station, combining about 6 free-standing tables and some groceries. Absolutely delicious torta -- one each of chicken and carnitas. East about $8, and a single torta (sandwich) is enough for an entire meal. The rest of the food looked expensive, but we would definitely go back for the tortas!

    (4)
  • Jason M.

I was in Vernal for the weekend and ate here twice. Probably the best Mexican food in Utah, and I have tried a lot of different places. I had the smothered chicken burrito. Great horchata too. I gave it 4 out of 5 stars because of atmosphere. It's in an old gas station and only has like 5 tables. If it were nicer I'd give it 5. Also a bit pricey. My burrito was $11, which I'd expect to pay in a nice restaurant, not a glorified taco stand. Still, the food was fantastic.

    (4)
  • Ryan M.

The outside might look kinda sketch (it is a converted gas station), but the food is not. Their food is amazing, very delicious. The chile relleno burrito is good, and they have some of the best horchata. We were talking to the owner while ordering food, and he is very nice, with a passion for what he does.

TeG is fantastico! Finding a good meal during my 2.5 days in Vernal, a desert town in eastern UT that has fallen off the food map, was challenging. Vernal simply doesn't register many good food options. Alas I got a good word from a friend about the people and food at TeG. I was warmly greeted by friendly folks and my chile rellenos with rice and pinto beans option was a welcome and enjoyable meal. I understand these good folks operated a food truck before setting up in a "modest" building that once housed a service station (the pump islands are still in place). The food is fresh and real and the menu of Mexican food is considerable and well prepared, though everything is served as take-out. The place was tidy and clean and the clientele were hard working and friendly folks who appreciate this well prepared selections at TeG. It's not fancy, but when in Vernal, UT, check it out. It will be a pleasant surprise.

    (4)
  • R W.

Not just the best Mexican food in Vernal, better than most Mexican food anywhere and pretty much all the restaurants in Vernal. Seriously, you have to go to Mexico to get food this good. I don't know how they do it. I assume they use ingredients from US suppliers but somehow it comes out tasting like you are in some small town in Mexico. Its like a mini vacation. Although I would pass on the horchata and get a Mexican coke instead.

    (5)
  • Richard F.

If you are in Vernal, then you should go to this place! It doesn't look great from the outside (or inside). It is in an old gas station/convenience store and you can park among the abandoned gas pumps. Order the food inside (they must have moved the ordering inside from the truck that is still parked outside since some of these reviews were written) and get your drink from the coke machine or bottles from the refrigerated area. I ordered chili rellenos and they were as good as I've had anywhere, including Mexico. The assortment of tacos ordered by the rest of the group were all pronounced good. The prices are cheap and the food is great. What more could a person ask for?

    (5)
  • Bill S.

Best steak Burrito in Utah. Friendly staff and great service. Be careful the Chili Verde, green sauce is very hot.

    (5)
  • Bruce J.

Very good, authentic Mexican tacos. Service was a little slow but can't complain about the food.

    (4)
  • John K.

This is a real sleeper. We would have driven on had we not been told that the food was good. An old gas station, now a restaurant. Mobile kitchen sitting out front. Not much on looks. But the food was very good. And very authentic. No beer. And chairs and tables like a convenience store.

    (4)
  • Aaron R.

This is probably the best restaurant in Vernal UT. It is a food wagon that is permanently set up at a closed gas station. They serve very traditional Mexican street cuisine using a wide variety of ingredients that normally cannot be found in a town like Vernal. I highly recommend any of their tacos, a small amount of meat, tortilla, pico, and lime.

    (5)
  • Shawn B.

This place has awesome food! The ordering process is a little weird but it adds to the charm. It's a former gas station with a food truck out front. The building was turned into a convenience store/restaurant. Looks like something out of a Kill Bill movie. You order from the food truck out front and then go inside and try to pay. They will then tell you to sit down and pay after you eat. Couldn't quite figure out if that's the procedure or not. Ordered the best carne asada burrito of my life! All kinds of funky drinks and hot sauce/salsa available inside the store.

Found this place on Yelp and then asked the hotel clerk about it. Two of us stopped in after the clerk at the hotel told us to try it. We had Carne Asada plate and carnitas smothered burrito. Very good. Would definitely eat here again. It is a converted gas station and has a mini market from East L.A. look to it. The service was good, the food was very good. The place was clean. Great stop on a road trip.

  • Alan L.

Outstanding and authentic. Owner takes great pride in the authenticity of the Mexican food - and it shows. Fast, too. Well worth the stop. Try the spicy beef taco.

Best tacos in Vernal...that is all.

Packed with too many onions. Meat was good but overall I left hungry because I couldn't eat the food. It just wasn't good.

  • Chris C.

Order the smothered spicy pork!! Great service and definitely a true Vernal experience. Reach for the spicy green sauce in the fridge. Order a Coca-Cola from Mexico in a bottle (real suger). Fantastic.

Taco Bell is a haven for Mexican delicacies such as tacos, quesadillas, burritos, nachos, and other specialty items. Owned by Yum! Brands, Inc. Taco Bell is one of the fastest growing American chains of fast food restaurants. The restaurant operates from 7,072 different locations which are mostly run by independent franchisees and licensees.

The background story of Taco Bell is interesting and inspiring for budding entrepreneurs. The fast-food brand is the brainchild of Glen Bell, who started his first food venture as a hot dog seller in San Bernardino, California. The year was 1948. After witnessing long queues outside a Mexican restaurant called Mitla Café across the street, Bell saw the opportunity and demand for hard-shelled Tacos. He reverse-engineered the recipe and later started selling Tacos and called the venture Taco-Tia.

Later, the name changed from Taco-Tia to El Taco. Eventually, Glen Bell sold the company to his partner and opened the first Taco Bell in Downey in 1962. By 1964, the restaurant also got its first franchise in Torrance. The 100th Taco Bell restaurant was opened by 1965. PepsiCo acquired Taco Bell from Glen Bell in 1978 and the restaurant brand is currently a subsidiary of Yum! Brands which looks after the restaurant business of PepsiCo.
