Tried it yesterday evening. Very nice food, expertly made. No alcohol at all. Not much atmosphere, but if you are looking for good sushi at an ok price, you won't go wrong here.

I've been here lots of times but I wanted a fresh experience so it would be fresh in my mind before I wrote a fresh review. I mean....a review. Not a fresh...like that...nevermind. So, here are the 5 reasons for my 5 stars 1) It's close to home 2) Special "G" - come on. Tuna roll, salmon roll, california roll and a salad for $12 3) You can walk in, order & just take it out and it's almost always fast. When I want sushi, I want it NOW. I don't necessarily want to sit down, chat and pay a tip. I just want to hunker down in my car and greedily shove it all in before I drive away. Hopefully it's dark out so no one sees THAT disgusting display 4) The salad dressing. Why do I love it? I don't know but it's SO GOOD. The salad is a sad little carton of iceberg, but I don't care because for me it's just a D.D.D (dressing delivery device) 5) The staff are SO nice. Always smiling. Great at what they do. So...it may not be the bestest ever sushi in the whole wide world. But it's good, it's a great price and 'as you can see it's 5 stars for me'.

First time at Sushi Express. We sat at the bar, the service was very prompt. Got our drinks right away. The menu has a really good variety. We ended up with 4 different rolls - Las Vegas, Sandy, Rainbow and Japanese named one I can't recall or pronounce properly. The rolls arrived very promptly. All well put together, very good flavor and presentation. We were checked on several times. Overall a great experience and a very good value. I will be returning again.

The sushi is good! It is a little pricy, but you get what you pay for. The staff is friendly, and they are good about checking on your table. I have dined-in, and have taken-out, both were positive experiences.

After hearing my husband rave about how great this joint is, I had to give them a try. I had zero hope in finding an authentic Japanese sushi joint in Utah. I'm VERY picky when it comes to Japanese food since I'm from Japan. We found out they are actually from Osaka - it was a nice surprise! Their sushi was very good. I really liked the nigiri and even their rolls. Only thing is that they don't have much selection when it comes to nigiri. I usually like to order Uni but they never have them.... If you are looking for an authentic Japanese restaurant in the heart of Utah this is the place for you.

Sushi Express has been bookmarked for a while now, so maybe it's due to the anticipation, but I was a little disappointed. Granted I only ordered rolls, so I can't comment on the freshness or quality of the sushi. The rolls however were very lack luster. Nothing to write home about. If you're in the area, it might be a good choice for an average sushi experience, but definitely not worth the drive. Prices were fair, but again nothing stellar to motivate me to return.

Sitting in an unassuming spot by a gas station and some random shops this place is easy to miss. But you shouldn't because it's one of the best sushi spots in town. It's tiny, but the food is fresh and delicious. My favorite go-to in the neighborhood. I only wish it didn't close between lunch and dinner!

He truly cares about his food, some restaurants(sushi bars) just roll whats ordered and give it to the customer. Well his not like that, he really cares about the food that people eat and he puts effort to what he makes. Thank you so much for the great food

I have been coming here regularly for eleven years and the quality of the food has never changed. I first came here in 2004 out of convenience when I moved into a nearby condo and was starving from a long day of moving. I had low expectations because of the locale, but boy was I wrong! Good, fresh sushi rolls and Asian cuisine at affordable prices with a friendly and welcoming environment. Many people are turned off by the location in a strip mall next to a gas station quickey mart, don't judge the book by its cover. Whenever anyone asks me where to get good sushi at good prices in Salt Lake I always tell them Sushi Express. I personally recommend the Vegas, Crunchy and Double Shrimp rolls. And the seaweed salad is excellent.

Since one of our first dates, my husband and I have loved going out for sushi. We moved from Utah county to Sandy and this is the first place we tried and were so impressed we went a second time. It's just a quiet little place next to a gas station but it has delicious and fresh sushi! Between the 2 times we went we probably tried 7 rolls. My favorite was the geisha and his is the Las Vegas. You won't be disappointed in this place. Yum!

I lived in Tokyo for over 10 years so I know good sushi! Great sushi handcrafted by a real Japanese perfectionist right here in Salt Lake reminded me of the best sushi film I ever saw, Jiro. Manabu-san is as real as it gets here in the valley. His wife, Rie-san also reminds me of the kindness in many Japanese people's hearts. My favorite is the chirashi (sashimi medley) for die-hard sashimi lovers. Kampai!

Came here on a weeknight and ordered the sunset roll, shrimp tempura, and unagi nigiri. The best part of my meal was my friend's grilled mussels -_- The sunset roll had really thin slices of salmon on top and barely any taste. The shrimp tempura is as expected and the unagi nigiri was okay. The portions were pretty small and my meal came out to about $28. Totally not worth it.

This place is a gem in what I would call a non sushi state. Coming from California where sushi is on every corner and fresh, sushi express offers a great selection of fresh fish and their salad is amazing. I would give this place 10 stars but I'm only allowed 5. Haha. Try it out and see for yourself. Great people and great food

This place is amazing. It looks super sketchy but this sushi is the best I've had in Utah!!!!! Shrek, Dragon, sunset, and geisha rolls were amazing. Being from Louisiana it's been hard to find good sushi in this landlocked state but I was blown away. I will definitely be telling people about it. Nom nom nom!

Got three sushi rolls to go. They were really salty. First time we have ever tossed away sushi. Not sure why this place got such good reviews?

Warm friendly staff, excellent sushi, and great prices... does it get any better? They even have a decent selection of non-fish based offerings for those that like the form, but dislike fish. A new regular haunt for me for sure!

Excellent sushi with great fish. Simple rolls without much sauce/mayo. We had the following rolls: Philadelphia, Alaskan, Ute, kappa, spicy tuna, Mars, and a few others. We also had miso & edamame. Run by a nice family. It doesn't look like anything special when you drive by, or even go inside, the tiny strip mall, but it is worth the drive.

I am so glad I found this place! Sashimi was fresh, and the chirashi bowl is really good. The geisha roll was my favorite roll out of the few we ordered. The best dish is definitely the black cod and it's melt in your mouth goodness. It was soft, flavourful and perfectly cooked. The takoyaki was decent as well. Get the Hamachi Kama (grilled yellowtail collar)!!! It's hard to find such an authentic place (the owners are from Osaka) in Utah. Can't wait to recommend this place to friends/family and we'll definitely be back very often! We came on a Monday night (around 6pm) and there was plenty of seating.

Driving around with my sweetie Saturday night we suddenly had a craving for sushi. Jumped on Yelp for some suggestions and it showed that we were very close to Sushi Express! Reviews were good so we went in! What a wonderful experience. It's a cool small shop...appears to be family owned and operated. Service was prompt and sweet. We got a special roll called the Shrek, ordered a Playboy and a Sunset roll. Also ordered a side of Tuna Maki. WOW...WOW...WOW! What an awesome place! The rolls were fantastic..just the right amount of rice and the presentation was great! The flavors were right on! The fish was fresh and so tasty. Great portions...we WILL be back!! I think I found myself a new favorite sushi joint!!!! YAHOO! LOVE YOU SUSHI EXPRESS!

We love Sushi Express. Thank you for making great rolls and always being delish! My nine year old lives the Sake roll and they always accommodate my strange avocado allergy. Thank you, thank you!

This is a hidden gem in Sandy. I had passed by it many times on 700 E driving up into Midvale or coming from Midvale back home to Sandy, but it was just a random decision as I was driving by the restaurant one Tuesday night to stop in to try it - and I was very pleasantly surprised! Part of the reason it's a hidden gem is that it's tucked away in a tiny strip mall with a Tenney's Pizza on one end and Sandy Stop convenience store and gas station on the other end. You have to look closely to see that there's a tiny little sushi place tucked in there next to a tiny little water store. The edamame and miso soup are delicious and prepared very nicely. The Sunomono salad is made only when ordered, so it is very fresh and tasty. I have been surprised since moving to Utah in August 2013 that so few sushi places around the area even offer tamago on their menus, but Sushi Express does it very nicely. The seismic roll is definitely the spiciest roll on the menu with the wasabi fish eggs and habernero mayonaise and can get one's nose to run a bit, but it's also a very delicious sushi roll. Most sushi is dangerous or forbidden territory for people with gluten intolerance or allergies. I was surprised to learn from a friend who is gluten intolerant that there's normally a great amount of gluten in many various preparations for sushi. However there are ways to prepare soy sauce and the sushi rice without using gluten. Sushi Express is a gluten-free friendly restaurant and offers a gluten-free soy sauce for customers to purchase. I also think the sushi rice is gluten free as they use only sugar to help the rice stick together, but my friend is going to try this place and let me know if it is truly as gluten-free as we think it is. Other than the tamago and the seismic roll, every other sushi nigiri and roll that I've tried has been wonderful. The preparation is delicious and the presentation is consistently beautiful. For my next visits, I will try the Udon noodles and the Donburi bowls as they also look delicious. The cost is very reasonable at Sushi Express. It is comparable to many sushi restaurants in the area and cheaper than some higher priced ones. One of my greatest concerns about moving to Utah, and specifically to the Salt Lake City area, was living in a desert. I was afraid that I would never see good sushi or seafood again, but I have very happily learned that sushi-grade seafood is frequently flown in from coastal regions and Sushi Express clearly uses high quality products in its food preparation.

Well if you're looking for high cuisine this is not the place, but if you're looking for great service, great sushi, & great prices from a little 'hole in the wall' restaurant then this is a place you'll love. I will certainly be back!!! Five 'hole in the wall' stars for sure!!!

I'm so glad we found this place. The prices are great and the sushi amazing. I recommend the geisha roll if you're looking for a unique flavor. Savory and sweet with Alaskan king crab, spicy shrimp and tuna drizzled with eel sauce. So good. The tempura was good as well and it was enough for three of us to share. I'll definitely be making this place my go to for sushi cravings in the future.

Near Sushi Express, there are several other Japanese restaurants, but I always come here to eat sushi. Owner/Chef Manabu-san is best and I can't think other chef in Utah that can make it better. Not expensive and tasty, I can't complain no single bit.

Just left this place and my belly is in nirvana! And decently priced to, we ate aloooooot. We usually go to the y bistro one on state because it cheap sushi but low quality. Eating here has ruined us for that place. I can never eat there again lol. We can't wait to come back to sushi express :) service was great, the food superb. We ordered takoyaki, crunch, tiger, shrimp tempura, utah, and tuna nigiri. I know what your thinking we're pigs lol in our defense we hadn't eaten all day.

  • Susan L.

We went to try just the takoyaki. It was just as good as the one in l.a at a japanese restaurant. Afterwards we decided to get some sushi and it was really good. The seismic roll was amazing. Really unique dishes and a good place to eat with friends.

Eight rolls. That's how many I bought last night. They were shared between two of us. Seventeen rolls. That's how many five of us shared this evening. For those of you who aren't good with math, that's a whopping 25 rolls I've tried from Sushi Express in the last 28 hours. Twenty-five. And you wanna know how much twenty five rolls cost? Combined it was a whopping $79. And that includes tax. Now, before you go beating down the door, you need to realize that these prices don't happen every day. In fact, they only happen once a year. The owners are about to go on vacation, so they blow out the sushi at 50% off. It's a magical time. Like when tomatoes are finally ripe or senior trip to the beach in Florida. The point is, I had their sushi (in copious amounts) two nights in a row. I'm swimming with the tuna and salmon. So here's the school lesson: it's priced right, it's tasty, it's fresh and it's my number one go-to spot for fish on the daily. My favorites: the Alaska roll & Philadelphia roll (smoked salmon, you just get me), anything with hamachi, and the USA roll. It's all about the rolls, really. Though I've never tried the kitchen items. And sashimi has been okay. Really any of the rolls. They're not purist, so you can find some fried things and some cream cheesy things, but just try to tell me there's a better spot for the everyday sushi stop in SLC. Dine in or take out. Deals to be had. Even a nice casual night out, the small but friendly seating area and staff are a solid option. Sushi Express yourself!

Ah...it has been 2 or 3 years since I ate at this sushi restaurant. This was the place where we usually ordered a lot of to-go. Years later, where are the Manga books? They are gone! Maybe they had make some room. Oh well, at least the sushi is always decent and fair priced. We ordered Utah rolls a lot because it is only $3.95. CHEAP! lol Just warning you, this restaurant is very small. It is not great for big parties. Always a nice place for some decent fair priced sushi.

I've come here a few times with classmates and it was just okay. I had the chirashi bowl which was better than other chirashi bowls in the area but not amazing. My friends had some rolls and were left disappointed. But the biggest disappointment was that they don't serve alcohol! What kind of sushi restaurant doesn't serve beer and wine???

Excellent sushi. I like how it is a little secret gem that is not too well known. I have been there multiple times and would go back again in a heartbeat! They are authentic Japanese and don't rely solely on sauces and seasonings to make their rolls good. But their special sauces are to die for... At first glance of this place and just the name even, this didn't sound like that great of a sushi joint at all. But I could not be more wrong. I owe it to this website for the urge and discovery to go there. The service offered there is humble for how little it is. Great attitudes, welcoming, and gracious people there. The ordering method is made easy as you have a slip of paper with all that they offer. You just select quantities of what you choose from their menu. Patience is a virtue that pays off here. Careful and not rushed quality goes into making every roll perfect every time. I recommend: Las Vegas Roll, Philly Roll, Crunchy Roll, and the Sunset Roll.

Was really looking forward to trying this place and left a little disappointed. I ordered the grilled mussels, shrimp tempura roll, and tornado roll. The mussels were too garlicky for me, and I love garlic! The tornado roll was probably my favorite of the two, however it fell apart easily. Don't plan on going back any time soon. On to the next sushi restaurant.

Oh was this a great restaurant find in while in Utah. Our family of 4 was enroute to race training in Leadville, Coloado. We stopped off in the Utah area to break up the long drive. We Yelp'd Japanese in the Sandy area and came up with Sushi Express. As usual, I always try a new restaurant by having their Chirashi with plain rice. I was pleasantly surprised by about 15 pieces of very fresh sashimi. I prefer to have my Chirashi over plain rice, instead of sushi rice. Myriam had to sushi rolls and she was very pleased. Our son had a bento box, which he too enjoyed. Our daughter finished out the order with her normal rice and miso soup. They were a little busy, even though we came in during the early part of the last hour before they closed. The solo college aged waitress was busily moving between tables taking care of everyone. A rather large college aged group finished up, quieted the place down. This was exactly what I was looking for - a comfortable family Japanese restaurant where the locals go. This is a true 5 Star restaurant! Fresh sushi in a comfortable family establishment.

At at Sushi Express over a dozen times and it never disappoints. If you want good, authentic sushi, this is the place to go. Small place, no frills, just good sushi. We always grab a salad dressing to go--they sell their house dressing for like $5 a bottle--good stuff!!

Situated in a bit of a sketchy area next to a 7-11 and sandwiched between a water shop and a pizza joint, this excellent Sushi Express is not only close to my house, but decently priced as well. I have never noticed this place and I drive by it all the time to drop my brother off for soccer at the nearby middle school. As all reviews have stated, don't let the outside deceive you. Parking is excellent, ten times better than Red Ginger, although I'd still give a slight edge to Red Ginger as still my favorite sushi place. The prices are reasonable here, I believe they average about $6-$10. I wasn't too hungry surprisingly and decided to meet a friend here. We ordered two Tornado rolls which were delicious, I do have to say Sushi Express has the best spicy mayo I've had. Plenty of fish, not too much rice, though a tad smaller than Red Ginger rolls. We had another roll with tempura shrimp in it and it had some sort of sweet sauce on it, though it was not eel sauce because it wasn't as thick. The sushi was delicious, I'll have to come back when I'm starving and try more. They are definitely made for takeout with few tables to sit, but excellent service and a nice Japanese gentleman preparing the sushi fresh. Our waitress was a cute little Asian girl who was working her butt off because it got quite busy and she was the only one there. Despite the workload she kept up on our refills (which I love) and managed to clean off tables for the next customers. There's a plethora of rolls, though most of them have Salmon in them, which I don't particularly love in my sushi. I enjoy the raw fish but if cooked Salmon is your flavor, more power to you. I would have tried the Ute roll as suggested by Sam V., but the Salmon was the deciding factor against it. I'll be back Sushi Express.

We had two wonderful meals here this weekend- the service was great, quick and very nice, and the sushi was exquisite. So fresh and flavorful. The veggie tempura is to die for! We'll be back next year!

This is my neighborhood sushi joint of choice. Sush-ex is my goto place for great tasting, low priced sushi. It is in a strip mall of sorts so might not look like a place you might want to buy sushi. Looks can be deceiving. This place is great. There is not much seating, but if the place is busy the wait is worth the wait. My favorite roll is the Crunchy Roll, but I have not had anything there that I have not enjoyed. Sushi so good I go again and again.

First of all, I'd like to preface that if I were to live closer to Sushi Express, I would be very poor. With the competitive pricing of their sushi, I would find myself justifying buying it on an everyday basis, which would be very detrimental to my wallet. That being said, very good quality sushi, very affordable, and charming owners. Last night's dinner comprised of: Grilled Mussels, Gyoza, Ute Roll, Mars Roll, Uni-Avo roll, and a fried roll whose name I can't recall. All for $47. Win. (btw, the Ute roll was my favorite, not to be confused with the Utah roll). Not to mention, I didn't have to wait until I was 80 in order to get seated. When they say express, they mean it.

This place brings back a lot of memories. It was probably the first restaurants I dined at when I first moved into Sandy. My first thought was "why the heck is there a sushi place on this run down mini strip mall next to 7 Eleven?" Ever since then, they have taken care of my sushi craving from my high school years to now. The whole place is about the size of a small apartment living room plus kitchen. The décor feels a little better than an old diner, but definitely nothing fancy like most sushi joints in state. Seating is limited and can be filled up fairly quickly peak lunch and dinner hours. There are usually 1-3 specials listed on the white board behind the chefs and they get changed every now and then. It is generally a hit or misses on those, bad ones are the one with cream cheese like Vegas Rolls, and good ones are the traditional mixture ones. There are also small stickers of off-item on the walls I would recommend too such as their Takoyaki. Not as good as the ones I had in Asia, but I have yet to find another restaurant in Utah serves that dish. For their menu, I recommend their Udon, Teriyaki Bowl (probably the only place I would recommend this dish), both salad and miso soup are good, most of their Nigiri, Double Shrimp roll, and Utah roll. Their tuna rolls are ok, but they were a little boring. If you talk to the chef, sometime they have special type of fish in stock on the weekend, but usually a customer will have to request it a few days early. The best way to describe Sushi Express is a sushi restaurant localized for Utahns. The price, food, and quality are all fairly reasonable for the locals. The service can be inconsistency depending on who is working that day...

This place is great! I love their salad, which has delicious, homemade dressing. Their sushi rolls are a good mix of the standard, familiar rolls in addition to original creations. The fish is high quality. The servers are very friendly. My husband prefers cooked food and ordered a box for dinner, and the teriyaki chicken and tempura was really good. I asked if they had a liquor menu. They said that since they are so close to a school, they didn't get a liquor license. Makes sense to me. Come here... you won't regret it!

Affordable and Amazing. I've been coming here for a decade now and I've never been disappointed. The chef is classically trained and from Japan so expect only the best. It's calm and small. Worth every bit of wait though! Try everything, especially the melting pot!

Cheap and tasty for the price. I recommend the spicy tuna hand rolls and The Geisha roll. The place is small but welcoming, and the staff are nice. I do like as well that they have multiple types of tea.

The sushi is fresh and the price is surprisingly affordable. If you're craving for sushi which I always feel like I am every day, check this place out. It's not as fancy and upscale compared to other Japanese restaurants, but if you just want to eat sushi and not have to pay for the ambience, this is the place. Their sides like the tako yaki (octopus) and grilled mussel are tasty. The salad dressing is impressive also. Best of all, their sushi portions are decent sizes.

I recall having been in a used bookstore or two, and coming across a couple of paperback books with an obvious printing error...they put the wrong covers on the books. For example, I once picked up a book called "Food to Live By," or something close. I opened it, and the entire contents was actually a book called "The Real Benjamin Franklin." Takes "don't judge a book by its cover" to a new level. Sushi Express has one of those deceitful covers, which houses a tantalizing book inside. The strip-mall location, wonky parking lot, interesting neighbors, and vapid exterior signage do nothing at all to attract the oftimes demanding sushi-loving crowd. And frankly, It's not fancy inside either, with its drive-inn ambience. But it's clean and tidy, and can accommodate a few small parties in the tiny dining room. I've been here when it's busy, and finding a table can be a challenge. However, it's more often less occupied, taking the chaos out of the experience altogether. Watching the chefs while awaiting to-go sushi, I've always wanted to return for an Omakase experience here (allowing the chefs to serve you their choice). The chefs seem so good at what they do, and have the personalities to match. If they're not too busy, their take-out is magically fast. The whole party-in-a-box is wrapped up so nicely for you, all you have to do once at your destination is simply unwrap, snap the stix, and get on it. Makes for a great lunch stop. They do an impressive job at many things here. Their rice is very consistent, the fish is always fresh and tasty, and they serve it all up at prices that appeal to the masses. I've tried just about all of their sashimi and nigiri choices, most of their maki and special rolls, and I haven't had anything I wouldn't order again. Some of them, in fact, have repeatedly expressed their need for me... Some of my favorites here are: - Rose Roll (shrimp tempura & spicy tuna; great combination) - Spicy Tuna Hand Roll (they make a mean one) - Hamachi Avocado Roll (melts in your mouth, very smooth & dreamy) They also have a small but thorough selection of non-sushi items, like Udon, Donburi, tempura, Bento combos, and lunch/dinner special combos. I haven't personally tried them, but I've heard good things from friends who have. A word of warning: the hours here seem to be inconstant and somewhat fluid. At times they will post a hand-written sign on the front door providing public updates of their hours that day. My advice: just call first. It's safer. If we compare quality and mouth appeal of sushi vs. price around town, by all rights, Sushi Express should change their name to Sushi Impress. They do a great job providing affordable wares that appeal to my taste buds, my stomach, and my bank account. (But don't tell. We don't really want the crowds to build.)

I LOVE this place. It's cozy and small and family run. Their bento boxes are a great value. Their specials (on the board on the wall) are always delicious. The sushi rolls are fresh and sooooo good. A little unexpected gem for sushi and japanese favorites. Must try!

I've been going to Sushi Express to years, so this feels a little bit like reviewing my sister's cooking. Fortunately for me, raves are easy to write. This small, family-owned sushi-ya is perched right on the border between Sandy and Midvale on 700 East. It is my favorite local place to get sushi because it manages to address one of the top reasons that I don't eat sushi more often, the price. Looking at a comparable roll from other local sushi restaurants, Sushi Express manages to be at least two dollars cheaper on each of them. Couple this with high turnover due to a constant stream of business and a real eye toward high-quality ingredients, it's easy for me to spend my money here. The dining room consists of five or six tables and a few additional seats at the sushi bar. I keep going back to a few rolls: Unagi Special - combines two of my favorite sushi ingredients, grilled eel and tamago, which is a dense egg omelet, into one roll. Something about the sweetness of the unagi sauce, the egg, and the sushi rice itself makes this one a bit magical for me. Add in that it's only $6.25 and it might just be the best buy on the menu. Geisha - if you want to splurge a bit, if $10.50 qualifies as such when ordering sushi, this is a good place to do it. Generous portions of tuna, snow crab, and spicy shrimp are topped with a sweet sauce and the result is a very satisfying dish. Salmon Skin - this one isn't on the menu, but I asked about it once and consequently saw it the next week as a special, and they've been happy to have me order it since then. Crisp, meaty bits of salmon skin combined with carrots, sprouts, and cucumber that, to me, taste like the essence of the best salmon I've ever had, only crispy. The menu is huge, though, so there is plenty of variety to choose from, which is a bit if a miracle given the extremely small open kitchen they are working out of. My best experiences at Sushi Express have come courtesy one word: omakase. Chef and owner Manabu Horikawa is very creative. And so, on the odd occasion that I've been seated at the sushi bar and he's appeared to have a bit of time on his hands, asking him to make me whatever struck his fancy has always yielded impressive and tasty results. Among my favorites were some cucumber lollipops which used a carefully de-seeded English cucumber in place of the sushi rice and nori to wrap up the fish. His knife skills are something to behold, so if there's a spot at the bar, I highly recommend availing yourself of the show. For those who struggle with the thought of sushi, Sushi Express has teriyaki bowls, donburi, noodle dishes, and a variety of other food. Although I've not ever strayed much from the sushi menu, I can whole-heartedly recommend the tako-yaki, baked wheat balls filled with octopus and served with a sweet sauce. They contained some of the most tender octopus I've ever had. The tempura dishes are also very nice.

One of my favorite places to go for my sushi fix! The only bad thing about this place is that they need to expand because it can get pretty crowded! Waitresses extremely kind & attentive & sushi quality is amazing!

sushi here tastes pretty good and probably the best ive had in utah so far. prices were cheaper than all the other sushi places i've gone too also. service is pretty good too--they'll make whatever rolls you want thats not on the menu if you describe it to them. they also do a stamp card for every time you visit. after 10 visits, you get $7 off your next visit. i'll come back again for sure.

What a fantastic discovery this place is for us. Simple, straight-forward, delicious. The prices are very good, and the staff was extremely attentive and friendly. Will definitely be back!

I've been coming to Sushi Express for over a decade now, and I have never had a bad experience here. Having lived in Japan, I like to think I can spot good sushi when I try it, and Sushi Express is right up there at the top. There is nothing Fru Fru with the sushi here, just great traditional selections. Yes it has 'Express' in it's name, and yes it's in a strip, but don't be fooled...Sushi Express is truly a diamond in the rough.

I love this place! At lunch today I figured out the thing they do perfectly is the rice. It's the perfect temp, texture, and flavor every time. Ocean salad is my fav way to start, then onto the sushi.

This restaurant is really hard to notice if you were just driving by. It's a cozy, little restaurant that gives you the comfort feeling of being at home. It's nothing fancy really, but they keep it simple. The waitress was friendly and my sushi came promptly after I ordered it. However, I was kind of disappointed with the sushi. I ordered the Mars and Sunset roll. There wasn't any WOW flavor in the rolls. The avocado in the rolls tasted old and "pastey". It was kind of hard to swallow since the fish didn't taste very fresh as well. I was even more disappointed when I found out they didn't have a happy hour. So I winded up paying $25 for an unsatisfying meal. If I were to come back, I'll have to try their entrees instead. Their sushi doesn't give me enough bang for my buck. But service is great and there's tons of parking in the front lot.

It's the type of place I would never go without a recommendation from someone I trusted. Here is that recommendation. It may look out of place in a strip mall next to a gas station, but sushi express is amazing. I love their take out sushi. It tastes great, looks appetizing, is always quick and easy to order. They have so many good rolls and I've liked every single one that I've tried.

Best Sushi I have had in Utah! I had the spicy tuna hand roll and an unagi roll, both were amazing!

Thanks to the raves on yelp, I dragged a relative of mine to Sushi Express recently. The waitress is very sweet and helpful, however, the rolls were a major flop and disappointment. We ordered 4 rolls (Las Vegas, Philadelphia, Crunchy and Crunchy with Salmon) for $32. I could have spent the same amount for All-You-Can-Eat sushi with better tasting, quality rolls. The tempura on the sushi was disgusting with its lingering cheap cooking oil taste. The seafood had one of the worst fishy tastes I've ever experienced which means the meat was either not fresh or not prepared well. The Philadelphia was gross and the other two rolls all tasted the same. All in all, there was nothing that made us want to eat more or come back for more. In fact, we didn't finish our rolls. My relative said, "their rolls are sucky" and she was right. I will never come back here again.

Friendly inexpensive sushi in an unassuming spot. Yes please. This is a small space, in a strip mall, and if that scares you away (like it did me for a long time) then I feel like you need to either suck it up and give it a try, or go pay more money for less love up the street. When I said small, I meant like super small. I think a lot of their business is probably take-out, but there are some tables for dining in. Everything is well presented and tasty. For sure the most bang for your buck in the south part of the valley.

I've been to a lot of sushi bars and I must say this place by far has some of the best sushi I've had in Utah! Please dont be deceived by the outside. Once you get inside you will be greeted by a friendly staff and you'll see that it's a clean restaurant. Cleanliness is huge in my book, especially when dealing with sushi.

I am starting this review out with a quick disclaimer, this was my first sushi experience. Honestly, I liked it. I was very worried as I am not a huge fan of food that once lived in an ocean... or river for that matter but I gave into peer pressure and tried it out. Honestly the fact that it is next door to a 7-11 did scare me a little bit as I had visions of stomach pumps dancing in my head but the food was fresh and of a very high quality so no late night hospital trip for me. I will definitely try sushi again and this time as a willing participant.

Great little place for sushi May not sound like an appetizing place or look like much from the street, but it really does have great sushi at a really good price. Just be prepared to be close to the people at the next table, because there is not much room in there

Best sushi for the money in the greater Salt Lake area. Looks very unassuming in a strip mall with a 7-11, but don't let that fool you. Give it a chance and it will not disappoint. Miso is amazing, every roll we have tried is near perfect.

After researching local sushi places on yelp, I came across this place with a couple good reviews about the authenticity of the sushi and it was close to where I was staying. I'm visiting from out of town (LA, CA) and decided to check this place out with my boyfriend and his sister-in-law Lindsay. Lindsay and I are both huge sushi fans! This place, like other reviews said, is a small hole in the wall owned by a family, which I truly am supportive of! The sushi was ok, kind of smaller rolls than I am used to having for such a price but the fish tasted fresh and delicous...however, the service was TERRIBLE. I think the japanese waitress forgot about us even when there were only 3 other customers in the entire place, not to mention we didn't get a greeting when walking in and had to awkwardly seat ourselves!! I'm a waitress myself and I know what it's like when you are slammed but for heaven sakes only 3 customers in and she couldn't even acknowledge us??? Anyway, after she gave us our beverages, she forgot about us for another 25 minutes, as other people filed in and got their orders taken and were served before us! I'm only giving this place two stars because our food came right away ONCE we ordered...but the service is TERRIBLE!

I've actually been here a few times now. The last time was yesterday for lunch. I love this place. It's kind of a "hole-in-the-wall". It's located next to a Five Buck Pizza place and 7 Eleven. It's fairly small and probably only has capacity for 15 - 17 people, plus another several at the sushi bar. However, it is a clean and tidy environment. Also, it's actually run by a real Japanese sushi chef. The service there is always very friendly. As a side bonus to me, I can actually converse in Japanese (what little I still remember), since it's a Japanese family that runs the place. The quality of the sushi is very good. It's the closest I've had in Utah to the quality I had back home growing up in Beaverton, Oregon (just west of Portland). There's tons of places like this back there. It's TONS more affordable than all the other so-called Japanese restaurants I've been to in Utah and much more authentic. The quality of the sushi is very good. Not as good as the best I've had--but the best I've had in Utah. And very good overall. The rice is done correctly, and the seafood and other ingredients are high-quality. They also have hard-to-find (for Utah) items on their menu. You can find Tamago, Saba, Uni, Tako-Yaki! (love this stuff), Temaki and even Natto! Also, if you like Azuki, they even have Azuki ice cream here--very yummy. I highly, highly recommend this place for a good sushi and Japanese food option in Utah.

Sushi Express was open for several months before I actually tried it. Quite frankly, it scared me a little. Don't let it scare you however. This family owned joint is excellent. It's not fancy, but the sushi and Japanese entrees are delicious. They are perfect for take out.

I love this place it is a whole in the wall gem. I usually get take out and eat at home with friends because weekends are busy. My favorite rolls are the Alaskan roll (smoked salmon with avocado) and the California roll. Very good and affordable.

Absolutely the best sushi for the best price in the entire valley!! The sashimi is fresh fresh fresh with nice size pieces. The dinner and lunch specials are all good. It is the definition of quaint. Not fancy at all, but has a quirky authentic charm. Only bummer is no sake! But it's still awesome!

Sushi Express may not look like much nestled into an older strip mall, and having a feel more like that of an old ice cream parlor than a good sushi bar, but the look is very deceiving. Sushi Express head chef used to work at one of the bigger sushi bars downtown and went out on his own at the current Sandy location. The rolls are all excellent and fresh. They don't scrimp on the quality or the quantity. They have various daily specials that are all excellent if you are looking to go a little more outside the normal rolls. They have a good selection of sushi, hand rolls and sashimi.

He truly cares about his food, some restaurants(sushi bars) just roll whats ordered and give it to the customer. Well his not like that, he really cares about the food that people eat and he puts effort to what he makes. Thank you so much for the great food

Kampai!

Yum!

This place is great! I love their salad, which has delicious, homemade dressing. Their sushi rolls are a good mix of the standard, familiar rolls in addition to original creations. The fish is high quality. The servers are very friendly. My husband prefers cooked food and ordered a box for dinner, and the teriyaki chicken and tempura was really good. I asked if they had a liquor menu. They said that since they are so close to a school, they didn't get a liquor license. Makes sense to me. Come here... you won't regret it!

We had two wonderful meals here this weekend- the service was great, quick and very nice, and the sushi was exquisite. So fresh and flavorful. The veggie tempura is to die for! We'll be back next year!

Best sushi for the money in the greater Salt Lake area. Looks very unassuming in a strip mall with a 7-11, but don't let that fool you. Give it a chance and it will not disappoint. Miso is amazing, every roll we have tried is near perfect.
