The food is always good and has become one or favorite hole-in-the-wall places. It's hard to find in the back of the kmart strip mall but the food is oh so delicious! Beers are served with the glass rimmed with salt and lime - yum!

This place really does have the best Mexican food in Utah! My husband and I always enjoy eating here. He had the Molcajete tonight and just glowed while he ate.

Once again, I found myself on the streets of Salt Lake City looking for lunch. I was meeting a client to walk through a condo she wanted to buy down near 4700 S. and 9th East and was driving through the Ivy Place Shopping center to see where I could eat and then I saw La Macarena. Start the funny dance now...... This restaurant is tucked away on the Southwest side of the strip mall around the corner from Spoons n' Spice. They serve typical Mexican seafood and it is delicious. I was the only person in the restaurant that spoke English and had to order my food in Spanish. While my vocabulary is limited, food is important, so thank God I speak enough to eat! On this particular trip I actually ordered the Tostada de Camarones or a shrimp tostada. It was delicious and properly spicy as well as properly garnished with homemade arroz and frijoles refritos. All was served to perfection and authentically. I have seen some bad reviews for this place on other sites and I say to take them with a grain of salt. If you are looking for authentic Mexican food served in an atmoshpere like you would find in Mexico, then this is for you. If you are looking for Larry H. Millers Mayan, then this is NOT for you. It is five stars for authentic Mexican. It is 1 star if authentic Mexican scares you. The customers are Mexican, the servers are Mexican and the cooks are Mexican. You are best served to speak the language. I love a place where I can go and see people eating lunch with a Corona and they could care less if the boss sees them drinking!

The Chile Verde is soupy, bland, and the pork chunks too small and fatty.

I had to put 1 star, but it has a negative sign in front of it!!! If you have not tried this place, simply DON'T!!! I don't think it's been cleaned since the building was erected in the 60's..... The service, or what they call service, is rude and non existent. The food is awful! I knew we should have left when we sat down. I think they need a visit from the health department......

The food was good. The atmosphere was good. We got to see the Brazil vs Netherlands game while we ate. The waitress could use some enthusiasm but overall ok. The food wasn't the best mexican food, but will definitely satisfy your hungry tummy! :)

Let's see, where to begin... We were the only ones in the place besides the flies and gnats. The table was sticky, not a good sign. Oh, and the condiments were also sticky and dirty. One poor gnat became trapped on the gummy ketchup lid. We did what we could to free him, but alas, he perished. I am certain that they do not own a mop based on the debris on the floor. The food was just okay, nothing special. I have to admit I feared food poisoning because of the grimy restaurant conditions. On a positive note, the salsa was authentic and good, hence the two stars.

Best Mexican restaurant in Utah. Decor is horrible but the food is great. Everything I've tried I'm blown away with. Best rice and beans I've ever tasted. Food is freshly made every time I go. Taste just like homemade. Truly authentic Mexican food.

This place was really good. It's authentic and delicious. The Decor is terrible, but the place is basically clean. Food was made fresh. Chile Relleno and Chile Verde were both amazing. Salsa is good.

Our first time at La Macarena and we loved it. Ambience is a little off-putting when you enter the restaurant, but don't back out. I had the best fajitas (shrimp) I have had and my husband was pleasantly surprised with the whole snapper. We are not sure which snapper item on the menu he received because the waiter could not tell my husband the difference between the items. Whichever one he ended up with was great. We will be back!

De-freaking-licious. There were 5 people in our group and by the end not an uncleaned plate to be seen.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
