There was a nasty smell about it which was overpowering our table. Do not think I will ever go back here again.

First choice for Hot Pot! I still need to try Yum Yum's Kitchen & Four Seasons but definitely over Good Future. I've never tried anything else on the menu but I do see many customers that go for that option instead. As of yesterday, all-you-can-eat hot pot prices were: $16.99 for 2 people $15.99 for 3 people $14.99 for 4 or more people The more, the merrier, people! The spread for add-ins include: beef, chicken, fish tofu, fish meatballs, beef meatballs, tripe, squid, octopus, mussels, shrimp, spinach, and bean curd.. I feel like I'm missing something. This also comes with vermicelli type noodles that can be cooked in the pot and fried rice (upon request at no extra charge). They bring some Asian BBQ type sauce along with chili oil for dipping. Soup choices include spicy hot.. or not. Not bad for all you can eat if you ask me. They're great about bringing out more food. Service can be slow.. so prepare yourself to be waiting. I asked for lemon 3 times before I got it. This last visit, it seemed they didn't know about all the utensils needed for the hot pot.. new workers? We kept noticing we were missing things we normally got. Fried rice didn't come out until about mid-meal. Not the nicest area or building but still worth the trip. They have TVs so we were able to enjoy our meal with the NBA Finals.

I thought I would give this place one more try because the first time wasn't a great experience. The second time around we ordered the hot pot buffet because my friends come here quite often for that, so I thought I would try it myself. The broth is pretty good and the selection of food to cook in the hot pot as good but the pricing was a bit expensive ($50 for three of us to eat). The staff was really friendly and ensured that we always had enough to eat. This place is decent if you can really eat a lot of hot pot, but I get full easily so maybe not for me.

What makes a good hot pot is it's broth. A good broth should impart wonderful flavors into the veggies, meat, and seafood you choose to stir in. Hunan Garden's broth is lacking some serious basic flavors! No spice, no sour, no salt, no sweet just BLAND! I came in with a large group and when it was time for refills our waiter brought out a pot of plain water and poured it into our already bland broth. They did provide a large selection of mix ins for the hot pot buffet including beef, chicken, whole shrimp, squid, mussel, fish cake, asian meatballs, bean curd skin, tofu, and spinach. Unfortunately not all was fresh. They gave us a ridiculous amount of beef and chicken and we did not attempt to even touch the chicken as it looked like it has been sitting out for days. My friend's dad even asked, what sort of fat is this? He seriously didn't know it was chicken! This gave us a good laugh haha. What bothered me is when we asked more of just certain food we were given things we did not ask for. I'm not one to waste food so this severely bothered me. I suggest they provide a list of what you can order and let us choose! This can help reduce food waste and I'm sure help save them money. I also found this funny but it doesn't affect my review in any way. Outside the restaurant they have a sign saying Free Wifi. I sat across from a sign that proclaimed the restaurants wifi password...the password is in what I presume to be Chinese! I can't read Chinese so I guess no free wifi for me lol.

Hunan is a local Sugarhouse favorite that many miss! Hot & Sour soup is amazing! Also love the chicken or shrimp lo mein. Lunch prices are unreal. $5 for huge portions. Hot Pot is also available and seems to be quite popular.

I have always lived close to hunan garden and love Chinese food, but the appearance has always kept me away. A friend of mine suggested it, and we were in a time crunch so I gave it a shot. I got the general gao chicken meal and my wife got the broccoli & beef. The service was terrible. We had a party of 4 and each dish came out 5 - 10 minutes apart. By that I mean they would bring out a cup of soup, then 5 minutes later the next person got there soup. Everyone had to watch and wait as the others ate there dish. The waitress also had no idea about the menu. When we asked about the house wine the only comment she had was that it was black (although it should have been red) The food was not only slow, but it was incredibly inconsistent. The quality of the meats used were clearly the lowest possible. The beef was grissly and the chicken had a unnatural texture. The fried rice was inedible as was the eggroll. In summary this place tastes as bad as it looks, and the service is worse then you could imagine.

We stopped by and paid in full to have it delivered. They took over an hour and a half. After calling three times they said its on the way but by the time we got the order the food was cold. The owner blamed it on the delivery driver instead of taking responsibility for their actions. I will NEVER go back!

The Chinese food here is very simple, but good. I let me son order the snow peas chicken. Pretty good. Pot stickers are so so. The soy sauce that came with it tastes..very odd however. Maybe a kick of vinegar in it? Not fond. The wife got the hot pot and its a lot better here than good fortune hot pot. But still not better than four seasons in Provo. We'll be coming back here for hotpot when we dont want to drive too far.

I really don't recommend this restaurant to everyone. I went this place with my friend (group of 2). We ordered hot pot twice (you can order as many times as you want. Like AYCE), but we didn't finish our 2nd hot pot (the quantity of leftover food was not huge, it was less than half), so they charge us $5 each (+ $18 per person for hot pot). The owners and servers were eating right next our table, and they glanced our table and then the owner ordered server to tell us that we are obligated to pay $5 fines since we have "HUGE" leftover. The food quality was not best or worst, but the service was very horrible. I would never pay $23 + tips for that quality of food and service ever again!

I got the all you can eat hot pot. 3 of us shared this and was more then enough!!! friendly staff ! keep checking if we were ok or needed a refill on any of the items!!! my son got sesame chicken and he really liked it!!! lots of variety's of mix ins for the soup!

Just do not try this resturant if you like Chinese food!! The service there was terrible and the "hot pot" was not real hot Pot; it was just simply boiling few options of meat, seafood and vegetables you like or dislike.

The service is -5 stars. We've been here 5-6 times and each time, the female waitresses could not STOP staring or giggling about something. I don't understand your language but the reference is quite clear when you continue to stare at my wife and I; whispering and giggling. Sheesh! This is partly why we have not returned nor will return anytime soon. The food itself is good, I like the flavor of the broth, and the variety of items available to you. I just wish it was self serve because they seem like they get upset when you want another dish. I would choose Four Seasons over Hunan anyday!

This joint is an American Chinese restaurant with a somewhat authentic style hotpot service. They have been around as long as I have been living in Utah. They can be access conveniently thru Parleys Way to 2100S. The restaurant is not very big, and the building is quite old, but has enough room to fit a small party. Their service is what you would expect from an Asian place. For regular menu items, you can expect standard overly sweeten Chinese food that leaves a terrible aftertaste. Only reason to visit here is for their AYCE Chinese Hotpot service. The selections were limited though as they only have the basic ingredients to choice from such as beef, cabbage, beef/fish balls, mussels, shrimp, etc. Meat quality was poor... poorer than the ones you pick out randomly from grocery store. The veggies seem a bit old and I could see a tainted yellowness on them. The seafood was not very good either. In short, Hunan Garden is a Chinese restaurant with mediocre hotpot service and loathsome menu items. Nevertheless, if you live nearby and do not want to deal with mess at home, I can see them being a compromise option.

My first Hunan Garden experience was take out of their normal Chinese food. I thought it was decent and wouldn't have written it off, but now I doubt I will be returning here. My most recent experience was for the hot pot, because I was told that this is THE place for hot pot in SLC. I was a bit disappointed after hearing and reading all the rave reviews about the hot pot. We ordered the buffet for 2, which costs $16 each (gets cheaper the more people you have). We got the half spicy, half regular broth. I thought the non-spicy side had a decently strong flavor, but the spicy side was definitely lacking. The term buffet is kind of misleading since it's not actually a buffet, but they bring out a tray of items and you can keep ordering more. Sadly I think it's a waste because there were some things that came out automatically that we do not eat, like some of the seafood. The items we got were cabbage, spinach, tofu, tofu skin, chicken, beef, tripe, oysters, squid, shrimp, beef balls, fish balls, and rice noodles. We never ordered seconds of anything because it was SO much food. It was sad to think that all the untouched, uncooked food would go to waste, but I also cringed at thinking of the alternative.... which to be honest, seemed totally feasible because of what I'm going to describe next. I'm from NYC and have frequented China Town many many times, so there are few things that disturb me when it comes to the cleanliness of a restaurant. I've eaten at some grimy places, but I don't think I've ever seen explicitly unsanitary conditions like I did at Hunan Garden. The first claim, I was not an eye witness to, but my companion swears he saw the waitress seated behind me, picking her nose, and flicking her boogers onto the floor. No washing of hands in sight. Ew, but I'm sure it happens at a lot of places, we just don't see it. But what I did witness was far more egregious in my opinion. At a table in the corner of the restaurant, one of the male workers was snipping the ends off of green beans. He sneezed into his hands a few times, and immediately continues working on the green beans with those same hands he just sneezed into. Not once, not twice, but three times. Needless to say, I won't be going back here. I'll just have to stick to hot pot at home.

The food was okay, but what was really disturbing is that they allowed a customer to bring a dog into the restaurant. I find this not acceptable while being in a restaurant eating. I'm sure it must be a health code violation.

I normally don't listen to many of the review, but after experiencing it first had I now understand. I ordered general tso, hot and sour soup, and vegetable lo mein. We got our delivery and it was 2 orders of shrimp fried rice? So I drove to the establishment and explained the situation they almost didn't believe me and I told them how can 2 orders of shrimp fried rice cost 30? Worst place ever don't go there... It is a shame the peoples reviews are spot on!

Listen to the bad reviews and don't eat here! I saw the reviews and thought I'll just try it. I just order sweet and sour chicken I mean how bad could that be! It's terrible. The chicken tasted watery and had no flavor in the batter. Sweet and sour sauce is usually nice bright red with peppers or pineapples in it. This was just brown goo. Tasted like it was duck sauce or something. Portions aren't that great for how over priced everything is. Meal only came with white rice which was odd to me. Usually you can choose fried or white. Maybe it's different in Utah I don't know. When I went to pick up the dining room reeked. Not pleasant. Food stinks. Will not be returning. Stick to Charlie chows :)

All you can eat, deliciously good on a rainy day Hot Pot! Great alternative to pho! After selecting the spiciness of your broth, they will bring you two trays: 1 veggies (mushrooms, spinach, tofu) and 1 meats (beef, chicken, shrimp) I am leaving out a few because I forgot the others, but there is a great variety! Once your broth broils you will add the items to cook. It is soup-heaven! The only thing I am unsure of is the pricing... The more in your party the cheaper per person the price may be? You might want to clarify that with your waiter!

The hubs and I are becoming regulars here! We did the hot pot most recently and it was pretty good! We usually do it at home but sometimes get lazy. We'd do it again in the future. The HOT POT: Mmmmm...good. If you like loads of meat boiling in a pot of goodness, this is it. There aren't many places in town that offer hot pot. Among those that do, this place is likely among the best. The beef with peas is also pretty good and is a favorite of ours. The staff is very friendly and definitely a step above most Chinese restaurants. They're pretty good at remembering faces and great you with a smile.

What happened to the hot pots? Ma and Pa Chinese joint that used to have decent hot pots but all I saw on the menu was the typical Chinese slop. Pa had a cold and didn't have the sense to stay home making me want to leave but the order was already in. It wasn't bad but I really don't like greasy Chinese so there's not much need for details. The owners said they're going to start a hot pot buffet in a couple of weeks for $14 a person which sounds enticing so I will probably check it out and give them a chance for redemption.

Thanks Hunan Garden for reminding me to get my hepatitis A vaccination. My lady and I had heard about the hot pot from many of our friends and had been meaning to try it. We sit in the back and order. While we wait for the hot pot I see what seems to be one of the proprietors talking on her cell phone while see picks here nose. Next I see her roll the tasty bits between here fingers for a minute or two while she finishes her conversation. She must have gotten board of playing with that fun little booger between her fingers and deposits it on the floor before she walks into the back of the restaurant. I tell my lady friend about this with a disgusted look on my face. She is determined to try the hot pot and tells me to forget about it. Ok, fine, Ill let this one go. Next, not two minutes later, I see the other proprietor walk out from the back only to sneeze on his hands. We make eye contact and he does not know quite what to do. He continues on to the table and sneezes again before sitting down to clean peas as he watches his kung fu. Are you kidding me? Is this some sort of candid camera TV show?I tell my lady again but her hunger is a powerful force and I am not to mess with this. She offers me the option to walk home to capitol hill. I consider it thinking that I have nothing better to do on a friday night and I could stop at the republican for beers and maybe some other restaurant. We eventually receive our hot pot and I am happy to see that everything gets sterilized in a boiling broth before you digest it, I hope. The hot pot was decent. More food than two people can finish with many options of proteins but I wasn't too impressed. Maybe I will return after my Hep A vaccination or when I receive my new liver.

Hot pot in the summer may seem outrageous to some, but I love hot pot, and I'd have it any time of the year! I like the hot pot at Hunan Garden. The meats, veggies, tofu, and noodles, are always plentiful. The broth, although not super fantastic, is good, and the condiments that come with the hot pot are nice as well. If anything is running out, ask, and the staff will bring more right away! The lady that's pretty much always there is the owner, I believe, and she talks with a really cute and strong accent, which I just adore. The service staff is always friendly and helpful. I love coming here for hot pot... eat, talk, and eat more, and have a good time. I've only tried their regular menu food once, and I'd say just stick with the hot pot and you'll be happy!

This is the worst Chinese food ever and the worst restaurant I have ever been in. The offer hot pots which I was really excited about until I received a mass of boiled beef which was suppose to be in a spicy sauce. Instead it was in a tasteless red sauce and unbelievably nasty. The interior is very sketchy and the fish tanks haven't be cleaned in years. I can't believe we even actually finished our meals. It was shockingly busy though i don't know what people were inhaling with such gusto. Stay away!

This is the third place in Utah that I've tried hot pot...and I must say I loved it! I think the idea of doing an all-you-can-eat hot pot is a great idea because the bill can rack up pretty fast when you have a lot of hungry friends dining with you. I came in with a party of 7 on Memorial Day and the Asian woman who greeted us was very adorable. She explained their hot pot to us and the only thing I don't understand is we can't specify which items we want with our hot pot...meaning that they bring you pre-designated plates and whatever you don't want to eat, you'll just have to leave it behind. I don't like to waste food so I wasn't too thrilled about this. The taste and quality of the food was very good! The broth of the hot pot was very bland as we ordered the non-spicy kind. But add some chili oil...and flavor is created immediately. Their items are very fresh and you can tell they know what they're doing because they give you all of the appropriate utensils and tools to properly serve and cook hot pot. Whenever we wanted more orders of a certain item, we would just tell our waitress and she would bring it out to us. Please note though I have not tried anything else on their menu but I did observe a man sitting next to us who ordered an appetizer combo that was presented beautifully. I'm excited to come back here...even if it'll only be for the hot pot!

Good place for HOT POT!!!! The meats usually are chicken and beef, but you can call ahead and ask whether they have pork that day. They give you fresh shrimp and some seafood as well. Service was somewhat slow when they are busy, but it's worth waiting to get some more yummy food!

Totally love this place. For those that are new to hotpot, this is not some place you would take a hot date and experience some sort of European Fondue. When you eat hotpot at Hunan Garden, you're going to get messy and you're going to eat good. When you order hotpot the wait staff will ask if you want your broth half spicy. If those that are unsure how spicy it is, it is not spicy at all but very flavorful. Next they will bring out spices and sauces. This is to dip the cooked meat into it. There is a thick meaty sauce called BBQ sauce (it's not the same bbq sauce you get at the grocery store) this is your main sauce. The other's compliment the "bbq" sauce. There is a red sauce called, chili oil. This is to spice up your dipping sauce. The other sauce is soy sauce. Once you have the dipping sauces ready the plates of raw food will soon arrive. The standard selection(if you order buffet) is: spinach, glass noodles, squid, beef, chicken, fish balls, tofu skin, tofu, Napa cabbage, mussels, and shrimp. Now for those who want lamb, I've always substituted to get lamb, which is by request. I recommend letting the wait staff know that if there is something that you don't like that is included in the All you can eat (AYCE), then let them know so it does not go to waste. There is also ala-carte if you decide not to order buffet. Just ask for the ala-carte menu. Again, this place is not to take your sweetheart on Valentines, but I always do :D Cheers.

Decent pork fried rice, but sesame chicken was more like sweet and sour chicken - deep battered chicken breast with cornstarchy sauce, with some sesame seeds on top as an afterthought. Hopefully the hot pot will redeem itself...

Hunan Garden.......i never tried their food but hot pot. I have to say, comparing to other major cities, hot pot offering in Hunan Garden is not the BEST! But come on, you are only paying like $15 and get all you can eat hot pot?!?! Be realistic!!!!! Hot Pot, unless you are having Szechuan Style Hot Pot, usually is not going to be "SPICY"! It is usually the sauce that you mix that make the food spicy. You need to really know how to make your sauce! I would recommend people who complain about the red broth not spicy enough to go try authentic Szechuan Hot Pot somewhere else (outside Utah). I would say, Hunan Garden offers the average Chinese Hot Pot. However, the fact that they do not offer lamb is a BIG negative to me. Hot Pot was invented in the old days for winter times so that people can keep warm. I think I would have enjoyed more if they offered lamb for the hot pot. These days during winter, I would just make hot pot at home! It's a lot cheaper, and the most important thing is, you can buy whatever you want at a much lower price. Well~let me know if you wanna know more info about making your own hot pot at home!!!!!! =)

This is the best hotpot place because they have the best broth and it's only 14 per person for all you can eat for 2 people, 13 for 3 people and 12 per person for 4 or more people!!!! They just added 3 new big screen TVs. Great place to watch and eat!! The owners/servers are really nice and efficient and just awesome!! I love this place!

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.
Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.
There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.

Just do not try this resturant if you like Chinese food!! The service there was terrible and the "hot pot" was not real hot Pot; it was just simply boiling few options of meat, seafood and vegetables you like or dislike.

Most authentic Southern-china Chinese food I have ever taste in the States! Didn't expect to find such an awesome Chinese restaurant here. Love it!!! Highly recommended, if you want authentic Chinese flavor!!!

Hunan garden's hotspot is the best. I like it sooooo much. The service there is awesome.

Had pretty new decor last time I was in there! Big improvement over the last time. The food was good. Spicy tofu was delicious. Chop Suey was a little off... Will be back again I'm sure!

Great place to go with a group of friends. The best part is that when you do the hot pot buffet you can eat and eat and eat as many rounds as you want so you'll always leave full.

It is ok. Not great, but ok.
