    This review is long overdue. My husband and I moved to the Avenues summer 2012 and were so excited to support our little neighborhood restaurant as they offer organically-made meals with local ingredients. We instantly became loyal regulars--often recruiting many friends, family members, and even strangers to partake in the local, delicious goodness. We were so distracted by the concept of Bistro on Third that we habitually dismissed the abhorrent service we were given 99% of the time. Nearly every time we dined at this bistro, the waitresses were incoherent, dismissive, rude, and often invisible. This kind of service seems to be a pattern with all their short-lived waitresses (as their turn-over rate seems incredibly high) and especially by the ones who have been there the longest-- Amy and Kelly, I believe. In my two years of choosing to spend my money at their bistro, these two have never been pleasant--or even decent servers. I can't recall either of them smiling or being friendly. The tipping point occurred the other day when I took a group of friends to dine there for lunch. Unsurprisingly, the waitress was clueless and seemed pretty out of it (drunk or high, maybe?). It took over 45 minutes for all of us to receive our food even though we were the only ones in the restaurant at the time. We never got checked on or received any refills. About 30 minutes later, we were ready to go, but our waitress was nowhere in sight. I even walked around the back to look for her. When she finally became visible, we asked her if she could split the check, individually. She rudely said that they do not split checks (they have, countless times before) because their system is very complicated and would take her a long time to break everything down. So, she told us to write down what everyone got next to the name of the card payer. Okay? So, I did. I actually did this. I got out a sheet of paper and wrote down all six names and what each person got and sorted our credit cards in the order they appeared on the paper. Because she didn't come back to our table to collect my specially-made report, I delivered it to her. She came back 1 minute later saying that my report wasn't helpful because she wanted us to write the specific amount of money each person wanted charged to their card. Whaat? So, I did. Again! I wrote very neatly the amount of each meal that each person got, next to their names, next to their cards. She came back 20 minutes later saying that she put the remaining sum on the last card (mine). I ordered the polenta burger which costs $13 and she charged me $19.77. When I asked her about this, she said that I didn't figure in the tax when I made my special report, so all the tax was put on my card. This madness was occurring while the owner, her daughters, and other staff members were drinking wine and eating cake in the back. My friends were appalled and I was so embarrassed. My husband and I gave this place multiple chances--constantly giving these people the benefit of the doubt, being friendly, and choosing to return. We are not, nor have we ever been difficult, irrational, or hard-to-please customers. While their concept is neat, the reality of the bistro has been such a let down. The service is repeatedly horrendous, and the sense of community is significantly lacking. Additionally, the quality of their food has decreased (as their dishes are frequently burnt and much too salty); their portions have gotten smaller; and their prices have skyrocketed. Bistro on Third just lost multiple customers--as we will never be returning or even recommending this place to anyone.

    I've been here three times. The first two times were dazzling, the most recent meal was lackluster. The first two meals were their Bistro Burger (delicious) and Trout with Capers (also delicious). The prices were appropriate, the service was slow because of how busy they were, and the summer patio was lovely. They had a small garden and source ingredients locally. My meal the other night was the Turkey with Brie sandwich and a side order of "wild" rice. Again, the main course was great. However, the side of rice was not wild rice but *half a cup of plain and unseasoned brown rice* for which I paid $3.50. (Server explained they no longer served it, I suggested they remove it from the menu. Had I known I would have gotten something else.) If the main course came with a substantial side (it came with a few pickled carrot slices), this wouldn't have been an issue. Moreover, they appeared to have raised prices by 20%. I would like to visit again, because the first two visits were great. I will lower my rating if my next visit is anything like the last one.

    It's a great place to eat something nice and light. I had their quinoa salad that was pretty freaking incredible, and had some of the house wine, that was quite nice. This place has a nice attitude, with local pride, and a hipster touch. Definitely made for a nice dinner for 2, or a group of 4 tops. it's tiny... so so so very tiny, so if you are with a big party you could probably take the whole space, or never be seated. haha. When I say tiny, i mean... 20-30 people max inside? I liked it though. I don't know if I would go back, just because their space is so tiny, that none of your conversations can be "private". I mean, our neighbors looked at us a couple of time when we were talking about some serious stuff... sooo yeah... Other than that, I think it's a must for everyone in SLC to come to this place at least once. I've been there for sunday dinner and Sat brunch. Both times the food was delightful.

    This place is wonderful. I've lived in the Avenues for years now, but my husband and I just got around to visiting this place a few months ago... now we're both sad that we didn't try it sooner! During the warmer months, the outdoor patio is so cozy and charming. Plus, it's in a quiet part of town, so you don't hear a lot of noise like you do with some outdoor seating. The indoor seating is also very inviting, and service is always very friendly. One time we came here and the power went out - we had just ordered, and we weren't sure if we would need to leave. They still whipped up an amazing meal for us and we ate by candlelight. It was very fun and romantic. The quinoa burger is my favorite veggie burger of any restaurant's, hands down. It's perfect! We've also tried a lot of the other vegetarian offerings here for brunch and dinner, and we haven't found anything we don't like yet.

    I gotta say it's a little bothersome that they dont have a proper website, sorry guys facebook doesn't cut it. Ok now that my only critical part of the review is over I can get on with sharing how AMAZING our dining experience was. The service there was 5 stars, Cassidy was perfectly attentive without seeming over zealous. Her timing was spot on. We started with an awesome bottle of prosecco, the small clams appetizer and Nans cheese plate. For our main course I ordered the duck breast, and my wife ordered the halibut. The food was honestly hands down the best we've had in Utah, and in all of our international travel s this place ranks in the top 5 we have been to on earth. ...earth. The atomospere is intimate and has a great neighborhood vibe. I don't want to sound too grandiose, but this place may be one of the biggest redemptive qualities for salt lake.

    Been there twice and service and food were amazing. When they forgot my smoked salmon app, they took care of it by taking it off the bill. We got it after our meal and the salmon melted in our mouths. Perfection. They are honest and caring. Love that place. Will be back again and again

    Expensive. Way too expensive. Ya it's organic or local or whatever but damn! Everything was 9.99 it seemed like, and of course I opted for the most expensive local trout fish tacos because they were sounding good. $13! I thought, hey, maybe they'll be worth it. Nope. They were ok, came with a mango salsa with zero kick, and some greens. It was tasty but lacked something. I had to put chalua sauce on it for a little kick. 3 tacos, local trout, but I prefer white fish for fish tacos. I almost went with the huevos rancheros because I'm a sucker for breakfast burritos but a) no meat, and b) gf was getting it. I actually wish I had gotten that instead. Tried hers, it was delicious. Only thing making it better would be bacon. Service was lacking, although she filled water pretty regularly. I dropped $30 on two people, I got water and the lady got coffee. Worth it? Hell no. Oh and to top it off they have an ipad to charge your card, which is convenient I guess. Except I like paper receipts. So you swipe, and then it has options for tip. Guess what the cheapest tip is? Oh 18% no big deal. Really? I only tip that much when I'm forced to aka parties of 6 or more, which is the dumbest thing ever btw. Servers should earn their tip not be graced with it for serving 6 or more. I definitely over tipped her but definitely didn't give 18%. I think the 3 options were 18%, 20%, and 25%. Who the hell tips 25%? Maybe it's cause I'm Asian but hell no I'm not tipping 25%. It was cute, I guess. Come again? Prob not.

    Great drink menu. I tried the Sweet Manhattan. Wonderful cocktail. I tried the burger, which was fantastic. Very juicy with excellent flavor. One of the best burgers I've had in the valley. Will have to come back to try the fried chicken, which kept me salivating even after I finished my meal.

    Delicious. Delightful. Dope. Three words that best describe this little gem of a restaurant. Maybe the best burger in the state. Fresh? I just found out they are farming the vacant lot next to my office. If only they were growing their maple glazed bacon. Call Mayor Becker and tell him to let them re-open their patio already. What is this, Krakow 1944?

    SOOOO glad that my friend suggested we meet here, cuz I've been meaning to stop in for the longest time! Owner, Kathy, and staff were delightful--very friendly and professional. The ambiance is homey-chic and inviting. Everything was spotlessly clean--I know, because they entire kitchen, dish room, etc. is walk-through style. I had amazing huevos rancheros, and buddy LOVED the day's brunch special--Bacon/Pesto/Avocado frittata. The Bistro has a snug, sparkling "Speakeasy" downstairs! I had no idea, but now that I do, I'm sure to be a regular. All major credit cards accepted. Relatively easy street parking.

    This place is good to visit, but I don't find myself visiting it that frequently for some reason. Which is weird, because the atmosphere is great, including the quasi-speakeasy downstairs. The food has always been pretty good, never had a bad meal there. But this place certainly suffers from that "farm to fork expense" which gets a little ridiculous at times. I've had some great brunches there but even then like, only 85% of the meal was great and the rest was not good. I am sorry to say I forget the specifics, but I recall a lot of my meals being very greasy there, something I welcome at times but not as much as supplied. The drinks are something that I really want to be awesome but just can bring myself to order often. They just are not that good. And they are expensive. I can take good and expensive, or cheap and mediocre, but not expensive and mediocre. Also, the bar service downstairs leaves a lot to be desired. I have talked with the owner (Cathy I think?) who has been great to speak with and seems to have an awesome passion for the industry and neighborhood community. I should go back more often, but considering the cost compared to other, better restaurants, I don't. But that hsouldnt hinder you from making your own decision because the food IS in fact pretty good, but can be hit or miss, the atmosphere is nice and neighborly, and supporting local is good after all.

    I love this place!! The food is always spot on and garden fresh (because they have an actual garden in the back they harvest from!) The owner is such a sweetheart. And her daughter is the dessert chef, how cute is that? The downstairs speakeasy is great spot to grab a drink and a snack. It is close quarters, so save the embarrassing conversations, my girlfriend and I realized that after talking in there about her dude problems... whoops! This place fills a much needed gap for avenues dwellers.

    Just absolutely bad. The eggs with truffle oil were incredibly greasy and unediable. The menu was pretentious and the ambiance, well. I'm not sure what the ambiance was supposed to be. There was a mixture of jewish, african, french and other cultures haphazardly thrown together with a "people of the world come together" feel. Not that theres anything wrong with that, but it just made no sense what they were trying to say, unless you're stoned, which incase you'd probably be better off just sticking to 7-11. Long story short, its just bad. Just.. terribly bad. No on enjoyed their meals.

    This place is a fifteen minute walk from my apartment. It just snowed and cleared out the nasty inversion so it was a lovely stroll. Everyone was friendly even though we walked in just a little before they were closing for two weeks for maintenance. My boyfriend got a whiskey on rocks and I got a local brew. I got the vegan risotto burger with the house salad and all of the flavors complimented each other lovely. My boyfriend got the french toast topped with mushrooms and i had a taste and it was delicious also. I will definitely go again.

    Phenomenal, simple dishes that let the quality of the food shine through. Human-sized (read: you won't leave here feeling like a bloated manatee) portions. Local sourcing of ingredients. Speakeasy in the basement. Friendly staff, and service has markedly improved since opening. Great interior space, big patio, and always-delicious specials. Brunch all-day! Kathie has a great vision for the area, and has finally been given room to breathe, can't wait to see what's coming next! However, the baked goods tend to be hit/miss dependent on freshness. Opens late for breakfast (9 AM). Speakeasy in the basement has a bar feel to it, but thanks to Utah liquor laws, everything is prepared behind a Zion Curtain. Food is still slightly inconsistent in preparation. Still, all told one of the better spots for a bite in SLC, and future plans have me really excited for this sliver of Third Avenue.

    The service, food and atmosphere were great. Very friendly staff and clientele. We stopped by for appetizers and drinks before other dinner plans. Wish we would have stayed there and ditched our friends. After leaving, the other place just paled in comparison.

    Tonight was my third meal at the Avenues Bistro, and the quality seems to be going steadily downhill. One of my friends ordered the special, which was pot au feu, and it was fatty and inedible. Even the sauce had a layer of fat on it. I thought it was ghastly, but she said the veggies were good. I had the pasta, which had not been seasoned very well. It was supposed to be served with spinach, but it wasn't. I heard another waiter tell a table they were out of spinach, but I wasn't told, so I just had a plate of pasta without greens. The least they could have done was tell me what to expect. The service was really poor. When we arrived, our waiter, Adam, advised us he had been working all day and couldn't wait to go home. That was evident all night. He never brought bread, we had to ask for water refills and he didn't clean a single table after guests left. I saw a sweet old couple sit at a completely dirty table, because that's all that was left. Tonight was dreadful, but I have had two great meals here before. That made it all the more disappointing tonight. I'll think twice before returning here.

    I thought the food here was good. Cool little eclectic space with really helpful/friendly service. I love the vibe in the Aves and this place fits the area nicely. I went with the trout and it was very good. I really enjoyed the lemony caper sauce and the fish was cooked perfectly. My friend went with the Steak and Mushroom sandwich and said he enjoyed it. Although to me, it looked a little messy. All in all an enjoyable lunch with an old friend at a new place.

    Love. Love. Love this place. We visit often and are never disappointed! The service is always friendly, but it can get really busy so we understand when things take time. I have had the trout, veggie burger, waffle, biscuits and gravy, and love them all. Love brunch, its my favorite.

    I would love to be able to comment on the food however, when I tried to go I was ignored. I am not exaggerating (I started timing) 3 minutes after walking in and being ignored by every employee (I was alone) a party of 3 walked in and were immediately greeted by the owner. She then proceeded to have a server seat them and walked past me to check on other tables. I would chalk it up to the fact t I was strangely invisible and unnoticeable (for the n first time in my life), except for the fact that the server moved me out of the way (without a word) so that he could get menus for the party of 3. I waited 3 more minutes and decided that they must not want business from a single diner. And lest you argue that they were busy, there were 2 tables on the patio (before the 3 top that came after me) and about 1/2 full inside. This was early (7:00 ish) on a Friday evening, so the 4 servers plus owner I saw (but apparently did not see me) should have been enough. I was and continue to be so frustrated by this since I really wanted another place in my neighborhood that I can walk to and enjoy dinner and some wine. I doubt I will give it another chance. Very very disappointed!

    I wish I could give them five stars, because the food and ambience were definitely up there. This restaurant is as local as it gets, complete with a garden behind the building where they source some of their produce. However, the service made the bistro lose a little of its lustre. We were seated fairly quickly, but waited for about 20 minutes until a waitress finally noticed that no one had helped us and tried to resolve the issue (apparently a bus boy seated us and didn't let anyone know, so no one was assigned to our table). She was courteous, but service was still slow and they forgot to add cheese to two of our orders. They made up for it by giving us free desserts, but I'm hoping that the mistakes were a one-time ordeal. That being said, I would definitely visit again and hope to give a five-star review next time. My table of three split the cheese plate and I got the huevos rancheros (delicious with an awesome presentation) while my two friends both got bistro burgers with a side of hash. They said the burgers were great and the hash with what seemed to be homemade ketchup was even better. I'm anxious to try the bistro again--I loved the food and hope the service next time will match that quality.

    Visited last night for my first time with my 2 sisters. My sister who lives a few blocks up raved about it. She was right! Cutest patio ever and the food was terrific! They both ordered the Quinoa burgers and I ordered the Bistro burger. Mine was cooked perfectly and they took forever to finish theirs because they didn't want to be finished! Ha! The iced tea was even great! Our server Cody, was super friendly and knowledgeable. I will be taking my husband back for a date night soon!

    I've wanted to like this place for a long time. I keep going back hoping that it will get better. It seems every time I dine here I have the same thoughts; #1-Too expensive for the food and #2--the quality of service doesn't match. I don't mind paying money for a decent meal, but when I spend $65 for two people for a modest meal, I expect superior service, which unfortunately has seemingly gone down hill here since its opening. On the plus side, there's a great patio, and it's close to my house. I suppose I may go back only for these reasons. I can only hope they can get their servers to recognize that people are spending a good chunk of money on food, therefore the service should match. Here's to hoping they can get their act together. 2 stars for potential.

    The patio is lovely. The food had loads of great flavor, but took way over 45 minutes to get to the table. This place is super cute, but they do their food and guests a disservice when they plate their food on blue plates that you would use at your home for a family meal. In my opinion it makes the food look like the neighbors made it and brought it over when served on those cheap plates.

    I am definitely going back but only because the food was fantastic and the ambiance was inviting and comfortable. Plus, I'm a sucker for a nice outdoor patio. The fritatta was delicious, as was the Pancrepes, Banana French Toast (rivals that of Ruth's Diner), plus they serve real maple syrup. The coffee was also great. My rating sticks at 3 stars though due to the abhorrent service. Such a disappointment.

    We had a wonderful dinner here which serves excellent food -- better than any we have had in Salt Lake. It was recommended by our sister and it was everything she said it was and more. It is obvious that they take great care with their ingredients and preparation. The bakery selections are all made from scratch, including the hamburger rolls. We are spoiled because we live in Berkeley and it is hard not to have an excellent meal in our town so our standards are very high. Don't miss this little place. It is a gem.

    The food here is really great, I had the quinoa burger and absolutely loved it. Dessert was incredible as well, though I never did see all the options that are apparently available, not sure what I missed. The servers were awesome, lots of fun and really attentive. The only negative for me was the price, a little steep, especially for drinks.

    I know this much. Having lived in Salt Lake City for 70 years, spending 40 of it in the food service business, I know this operator to be heartfelt and sincere when it comes to being the best restaurant possible. In a business where you cannot please everyone they are doing an extremely good job. At the heart of this restaurant they are dedicated to serving great, fresh, healthy food with a great experience. It will stand the test of time.

    This place is a treasure. Food is fresh, local and delicious. The atmosphere is what you'd want from an Avenues bistro: friendly, elegantly charming and comfortable, They have a counter seating option, which is nice when you are dining alone. Which is what I was doing when I had breakfast there today. The menu options are named after an Avenue. I had the 1st. It was delicious, and the flavor of the eggs themselves were remarkable. The chef told me they came from a chicken farm in Orem. Here you'll find rare quality, at a very neighborly price too!

    I tried this place for the first time last weekend and had a delightful experience. It is physically a simply charming, cool and adorable spot. The interior is warm and inviting and the outside patio affords a view of the lovely neighborhood. I had the polenta with eggs which was delicious. My only critique is that the vegetables were undercooked. The service was pleasant. Overall, my kudos for great ambience and solid food. I will definitely be back; it is a lovely addition to this great neighborhood.

    Went by this place and it appears to be a favourite restaurant of The Avenues crowd. No bread served. Went in, and ordered the bass. It was good, but not better than what I could make. My friend's filet mignon - the chef's special of the day - tasted like pot roast. Even though he insisted it to be cooked medium, i.e. red and juicy - the meat was cooked well done and soggy. Which means the chef doesn't know how to sear steak. Steak must be seared or grilled - never cooked. This one was steam cooked with the lid on the meat. (Trust me you can tell). The second time, we both ordered the pasta - special of the day. My seafood pasta came and tasted like vinegar - meaning, the seafood in it was spoiled. My friend's pasta was good. I was hungry so I just ate the funky pasta but I did have reservations about it afterwards. Told the waitress and she replied "must be the dill". There was no dill in my pasta. Anyways, luckily didn't have stomach problems. The third time, my friend went there again - this shows how pathetic the restaurant situation is in SLC - and ordered AGAIN, filet mignon. He got mad this time since it again tasted like pot roast and he gave specific instructions as to how to cook it. He then realized after complaining from the wait staff that all the food was precooked - including the steak. Which explains why it was overcooked no matter what the instructions were and why it was soggy like pot roast. There is no excuse for any restaurant who precooks their food especially steak - and serve seafood pasta in rancid sauce. Steak is the easiest thing to prepare and if they can't get that right... Sorry, my home cooking is 1000% better.

    I love this place. The ambiance is perfect for my taste; it feels cozy, warm, and just like the perfect little neighborhood nook. Our service was excellent. We were welcomed and greeted quickly and our server was knowledgeable and helpful. The diverse menu is wonderful, although it was hard to decide what to eat. This is definitely one of my favorite restaurants in SLC.

    I tried the weekend brunch menu, which looked great but was a bit overpriced. The food did not all come out at the same time, which may be due to the small size of the restaurant (group of 3). The food was decent if a little bland, but when asked for condiments the waitress forgot. My friend and I split the check, but I noticed a few days later that I was double charged (although my friend's charge was correct). I tried to contact the restaurant, but never received a return phone call and ended up having to deal with it through my bank. I will not be returning. I would have loved to love this place since it's so close to my house, but the customer service issues were over the top.

    We loved this place when it first opened. Great menu, amazing selections, plus one dollar corkage fee! But they changed the menu a little while back and all I can say is blah. Overpriced, last time we went and got the cheese and meat plate - it came with two pieces of cheese, two! The service was great, though.

    It was a Wednesday evening around 6 pm. We walked from my house to this little neighborhood bistro. There are a few tables on an outside patio but due to the chilly evening we opted to dine inside. The table was slid out to make room for us to sit side by side against the wall so that we could face the kitchen. it was a very interesting seating arrangement and I liked it a lot. The tables had a selection of different salts to try and a book. Ours was a cookbook from the 2nd avenue deli in New York City. We got started right away with the menu and decided on a Hop Rising for us both and the Greek Salad to start with. The Greek had sautéed feta and was so delicious warmed up like that I became an instant fan. The greens were fresh and dressed perfectly with a vinaigrette. Kalamata olives and sun dried tomatoes finished the salad nicely. For my entree I chose the Trout that I saw going out to a table as I had just been seated. It was layered on a bed of purple fingerling potatoes with a savory caper sauce. I loved it. It was just the right portion too. My dining partner ordered the "Avenues Special" sandwich. We were told this was a favorite at the Bistro. It came out open-faced, with melted brie and a balsamic reduction. It was so fantastic I will for sure order that on my return trip. And there will be a return trip. The service was friendly and we even interacted with the chefs in the open kitchen. All in all, this is a fun, hip, yummy place to chill and get a great meal. Oh and everything on the menu is $10 or less. Thumbs up!

    I had huevos rancheros for dinner and it was wonderful. I love that the kitchen and dishwashing station are completely open so the guests can see every aspect of how a restaurant works. There is a nice selection of drinks, alcoholic and otherwise, as well as desserts. The bar downstairs is a great place to enjoy your dessert in case you want to stay a bit longer; I certainly did.

    Disappointed again. Just wanted a decent breakfast. The food wasn't anything impressive, just ok. But small portions and it didn't even come with toast, had to order on the side. The pie like thing I had was ok, a little bland and to many onions. Had to ask twice for coffee. When the toast and food came out the presentaion was lacking and the butter for the toast was rock hard. I live one block away and wish I could get something better then that for $13 especially when I left still hungry.

    I'm in love. I have been to The Avenues Bistro on Third a handful of times now, the first being a rainy day when they first opened. The menu is eclectic with cutting edge ingredients, black truffles- OH MY! The ambiance, the service, the patio... it is a perfect neighborhood cozy restaurant with a party in your mouth menu. I am thrilled to recommend my friends to my favorite little spot.

    My husband and I have been here 3 times. Being a creature of habit, I have ordered the trout fish tacos 3 times, whch have been wonderful every time. I also have enjoyed the ceaser salad, and the greek salad as pre-dinner salads. Both are reasonably priced, and the portions are good. My husband has ordered the ribs, (yummy, yummy) and the chicken liver dish. The chicken livers are cooked with rum soaked grapes in a broth that redefines what chicken livers are supposed to taste like... He also has ordered the ribs, slow cooked, with wasabi infused potatoes which was also quite good. We've gotten smart, and last night, brought our own wine, With a $4- corkage fee, this was such a bargain, we had to visit their new lounge space. This is a small, intimate, totally cool space, with wines, mixed drinks and beer available. We have dined outside twice, which has always been lovely, quiet, and romantic. We dined inside last night, and enjoyed the experience as well. For us, this will become a "neighborhood favorite"

    So we live on 1st ave and I took a late long lunch break to go to the tulip festival and Red Butte gardens with my wife and daughter, saw this on the way over and thought we could grab a quick bite to eat. We were seated outside on a beautiful day but after waiting over 15-20 mins and watching our serve go by several times we just had to leave. The food looked good but the service was just horribly slow.

    I'd say this place is just ok. The ambiance is very nice, but the food is definitely overpriced, especially for the amount you get. The burger tasted pretty good, but four French fries for a side? I got the turkey sandwich (lunch). The flavors just didn't work together at all. The accompanying side salad looked beautiful, but the balsamic dressing wasn't good at all and made the salad mostly inedible. All in all, I'd say this place is just ok. I won't be going back, especially not for those prices.

    I'm giving this review one less star based off of the worst service of my life. I actually left that place borderline upset, that's how rude the waitress was. The food was good. I had a waffle with fruit compote and it was big and exactly as the menu described. I had one cup of coffee as no one bothered to ask if I wanted more.... I wanted more. The restaurant its self was small and very cute. Our blonde haired waitress seemed to be upset with either me or my boyfriend as she couldn't even bear to look at us or acknowledge the please or thank you. I asked if he knew her because her demeanor was that of an upset ex girlfriend or someone who genuinely disliked you. He did not know her. This sort of behavior is something you would expect when someone is very busy. This was not the case. I would love to come back and try the arugula salad but truth be told.... I got a very unwelcoming vibe in that joint. :/ I really am not one to leave a review of this kind but man, I don't like to pay people to be mean to me.

    I only review places I love. This place is perfect. It's small, quaint, a refurbished Avenues pharmacy building, they've kept the marble topped wooden cabinets. Food is simple and delicious. They always have a trout dish from a local source. In fact most their items come from their large community neighborhood backyard which they will allow you to stroll through. Eating outside used to be my favorite. But they have briefly lost a permit to allow outdoor eating, --this should be fixed soon. I met with the proprietor who was helping run the restaurant. Lovely woman. Service and food all very very good. Will return repeatedly.

    This was a great place to have brunch with 6 of my favorite cousins. They were able to seat us right away, although service was a bit slow after that. They did have two parties of 7 at the same time somehow, so that probably slowed things down a bit.. I'd definitely go back next time I am in SLC. Restroom is great; there's only one, but it seemed like enough.

    Came here for lunch between classes and it was perfection! The food is fantastic, environment is cute and homey, and everyone seemed pretty nice. The place was practically empty and we were one of the few tables in the restaurant, but that was probably for the best since it's pretty small. They have their own garden, so the food is amazingly fresh. We had the burger and the club, and both were phenomenal. We also had the bread pudding, which was amazing. I will be back for more!

    First of I want to say I am a believer in good reviews. Trust me I wanted to leave one. This place is super cute the food is okay, much like most places. There is not a line out the door for the food. This is a small family owned place. Some place you really want to love. I just moved to the avenues and am right down the street from here. I have visited this establishment 3 times now. We have had the same blonde waitress Amiee I really wanted to believe after 3 times she'd be nicer. My Mom told me kill them with kindness if this was true she'd be dead by now. Either she hates what she does or she is just an unhappy person in general, which ever she should get a new profession. Customer service is not her thing. She makes choking down the mediocre food much much harder. By all means I can eat mediocre food if a smile is served with it. Never again. I went on to read the other reviews and it looks like I am not the only one who received horrible service and it looks like from the same person.

    This is a cute setting. And the food is often very good. One caution however is the seating at the bar. It's a good place to see the cooking. However it's also the main corridor between the back and front of the restaurant. So its very busy. If you want more relaxed seating choose a table near the front or outside.

    Salt Lake Magazine recently named Avenues Bistro on Third, "Best Neighborhood" restaurant for 2014, so we decided to give it a try. The restaurant is situated in a small, renovated house in the avenues. If you sneeze you will miss it. ( Did you know it's impossible for a human to sneeze without closing their eyes? No seriously, try it.) There is seating for a total of about 30 in the restaurant/bar combined. The restaurant is tastefully decorated and quiet which was perfect for the purpose at hand, an enjoyable lunch that included good food and interesting conversation with one of my favorite people in the entire world. The menu is limited. They offer 6-ish breakfast dishes, seven lunch, and about the same for dinner. Initially I wasn't thrilled with the lack of options. Upon leaving, however, I decided they put a lot of thought in to what they offer. It was as if they were saying, "Eat this. It's f*ing awesome." Then didn't disappoint. We were there for lunch so decided to split an order of Clams, my friend ordered the Bistro Burger and I ordered the Polenta Burger. The Clams were wonderful. The menu presented them as; Pacific Northwest Clams, mirepoix, garlic, shallots, tarragon, white wine cream sauce, house crostini. I am no food connoisseur so I had to Google what "mirepoix" consists of. I'm pretty sure it included all the usual suspects. If it didn't, I don't much care. After all the clams and crostini were consumed I seriously wanted to pick up the plate and drink down what remained as if it were the coveted milk at the bottom of a super sugary breakfast cereal bowl. My guest then showed me a trick. If you separate a clam it's an awful lot like a spoon. I'll leave what happened next to your imagination. The Polenta Burger was pretty tasty. I had the option of fresh salad or home fries on the side. I chose the salad. It was above average. Definitely fresh. The dressing was lovely. They dressed the burger with arugula, shallot jam, bread and butter pickles (DELIGHTFUL) and Lazis Muhammara on a local ciabatta bun. Then came the Bistro Burger. (Insert the MoTab singing Hallelujah.) It was hands down one of the best burgers I have ever tasted. The menu touted it as; 7oz local grass-fed beef, candied bacon, gorgonzola, arugula, pickled red onion, house made aioli on local ciabatta bun. All of these together were a whole-lotta-yum! The service was great. She kept our iced tea filled throughout the entire visit and was pleasant. Thanks Salt Lake Magazine for the tip. We will definitely return.

    Okay, the beer's a little on the pricey side...unless you go for the Miller High Life (the champagne of beers). But the food is spectacular! I get the impression that everything they serve is sourced locally. Therefore, it's a touch pricey. But it's terrific fun to watch the chef slice fresh bread for your sandwich and toss your garlic fries right before serving. The reason I gave four stars is because there are some terrific local beers that I feel like this place overlooked in favor of more exotic (expensive) options. The service is good enough. But go here to eat, not judge the wait staff.

    I had the honey beet salad and it was fantastic! Fresh crisp arugula and spring mix with a sweet dressing and some crunchy walnuts on top. Served over some sort of a puréed sweet beat mixture on the bottom. I really enjoyed the intimate atmosphere and the incredibly friendly staff! All the food is local and most of it is farmed right there on the property. It's all organic and fresh and superduper awesome! I will be back.

    Maybe it was a fluke, but brunch today was a perfect storm of bad service. Over the 2 hours it took total we had wrong orders, rude service, and mediocre food. To top it all off they "accidentally" applied auto gratuity to a group of 5. Will not be going back.

    I took my mother to this restaurant on a Saturday afternoon. We really enjoyed our sandwiches (Turkey Dijon and French Dip) although the mustard on the Turkey Dijon was very spicy. The hot chocolate was good although a little bitter. The desserts were amazing - the vanilla bean hoho, the apple croissant, and the lemon berry cake were to die for. It was a bit more expensive than I would have liked and the water cups there ridiculously small.

The burger was ready and sat on the pass for 10 minutes till my husband's food was ready... 10 long mins.. that is a big no no for me... the food was cold by the time I got it and just okay.. not great.. would've still considered going back if the food were good.. will not return!

    Some places feel like the owner just googled "what kind of restaurant do white liberals like?" I'll find myself thinking "well, there's arugula, aioli, truffle flavoring, and bacon...I should love this place but there's something missing." Contrast with this place, which feels more like a labor of love. They have original menu items with lots of vegetarian options. I'm not a vegetarian, but I had their new risotto burger and it was amazing. They have their own bakery in back as well - had a great homemade hoho. They pickle their own vegetables for use in the food and source locally when possible. Great place.

    Today we tried this cute neighborhood restaurant for lunch. The ambiance was very cozy on a windy fall afternoon and there is much to look at while you are there. This was a good thing, because after being seated, the waitress brought water (lukewarm, no ice) and then forgot we existed for 10 minutes or more. We finally asked for menus and then things went better from there. She was friendly, took our order and while we waited, the owner came by and chatted for a few minutes. We ordered a chicken Caesar and a French dip and were off to eat. A cold bottled Coke served with an icy glass made up for the lukewarm water. The thinly sliced beef was perfectly seasoned, lean without chewy fat or gristle, and cooked up with a mess of onions and Swiss on a soft bun. Very tasty! The salad was good, but the dressing was a bit too mayo tasting and needed a little more bite. The chicken was perfect. I would have given our experience 5 stars except for the service at the beginning and the lukewarm water. The most fun part was that our meal was paid for by another table who were paying it forward because a different table paid for their meal, and so we paid the bill of the next couple after us! I wonder if paying it forward kept going all afternoon, lol!

    Can you believe in a love at first sight? I'm certain that it happens all the time. For me it happened at Avenues Bistro. I loved everything about it -- the homey, cozy decor full of cookbooks, the friendly staff (Cory was attentive and friendly without pouring it on too thick), and the fresh, local food. In the past couple of years I stopped eating beef from CAFOs, and decided that I would only eat grass fed. As my son says, I only eat cows that have been hugged by hippies. I saw the grass fed burger and it was so yummy, I didn't even mind that it came with a side salad instead of fries. Anyway, I am tickled that this place is in my neighborhood. No, it's not cheap. You are going to pay a little more for fresh, local, natural ingredients. But as Michael Pollan says, "You can pay the grocer, or pay the doctor."

    This is, hands down, my favorite restaurant in Salt Lake City. All of their meals are consistently awesome and the waitstaff is super friendly and helpful. I love the ambiance and the cuteness of the inside (and hopefully their outside once the patio permit gets approved!). i think by this point in time I've tried almost everything on their menu, but things that stick out the most are the Duck Confit French Toast and the Mussels. Both of them are incredibly savory and the flavors are spot-on. I hope they keep doing their things because I always have this place on the top of my list for brunch, dinner, or to bring friends when they stop into town.

    I went to this place for dinner, it's a cute joint but it's absurdly overpriced. I got a burger: it was $15, with a stale bun and for some reason smothered in maple syrup. In other words, it was disgusting. The salad was likewise drowning in dressing. My friend got a $17 pasta dish that they found to be underwhelming on multiple levels, the most unforgivable being that the portion was tiny. I will never go here again.

Bistro burger is one of the best burgers I've ever eaten. The fries were so good i couldn't decide whether or not to dunk them in the amazing house made ketchup. Apparently they put smoked butter on them. Omg. She had the breakfast tacos and raved. Is it rude to pick up your plate and lick it? I came this close. Go here.

    It's a little pricey but you are paying for fresh, locally grown food. I don't know the owner but I went with a networking group that was hosted by the owner. I was super impressed by her passion for making high quality food and supporting local businesses. Almost everything is made right there like the pickles and the mozzarella cheese which was really really good. They even have gardens out back where they grow some of their food. The pastry we had was amazing and it was made by the bakery in the back.

    Oh dear, oh dear. How to review a place when the food is great and perfect for a Sunday brunch (which is exactly what we went for), but we were stuck there for over two hours? Working in the food industry myself, I try to be extra positive about service. You never know when a server is having a tough time or technical difficulties in the kitchen are being had, but even the server had some grumpy gills on her neck... So with that in mind *sigh* here we go. The restaurant is very cute (It took over an hour to get our food). The host, Rob, was very chipper and happy and pleasant. (It took over an hour to get our food.) Eating outdoors on the patio was perfect for a Sunday brunch. (It took over an hour to get our food.) I loved their simple menu and the food tasted great... (It took over an hour to get our food!!!) Okay, obviously I can't get past the fact that it took over an hour to get our food. Because the food was delicious (I ordered the biscuits and gravy with eggs over medium), I will come back to give Avenues Bistro a second chance. Like I said, it maybe could have been an off day for them. Until then, I give these guys two stars. Next time, Avenues Bistro, impress me. (I'm really on your side here. I'm cheering for you!)

    We stopped in Salt Lake City for one day and heard about this place from people we met in the neighborhood. This is a beautiful, relaxing spot for a meal. The trout dish I had was carefully made, exactly the right flavor and texture. Fantastic greens salad dressing with a touch of Saba. Everything here is made to perfection. We'll remember this place when visiting Salt Lake City next time!

    My girlfriend and I used to visit Avenues Bistro almost once a month, back when they had outdoor seating a couple summers ago. In the last year or two, there's been a significant decline in the quality of service and food. The trouble started when our waitress, [Name Omitted from Review], simply ignored us for almost 10 minutes after we were seated. No water, no silverware, nothing. She made eye contact with us a number of times but seemed too preoccupied to be troubled. I finally got up and picked up a pitcher of water and poured our water myself. Finally, our waitress made it to our table, and quickly asked, "What are you having?" No greeting, no suggestions, nothing. My girlfriend and I were both caught of guard by her snarky attitude. Regardless, she ordered the egg croissant sandwich and I ordered the pastrami sandwich. Once our food arrived, I asked if I could have a side of mustard with my sandwich. This is where things really elevated. The waitress informed me that the kitchen was out of mustard. I asked her a second time, "you are telling me the kitchen is out of mustard?" She answered affirmative. Something about the entire interaction with her made me suspect she was lying. After she left, I walked to the counter and asked one of the cooks for mustard. The cook, of course, obliged and handed me a ramiken of deli mustard (which was delicious). Our waitress, from across the restaurant, YELLED at the cook, saying, "I told them there was no more mustard!", insinuating that the cook had done something wrong. At this point I had had enough. In front of all the guests and employees, I told our waitress, "You need to own the situation. You lied. Stop blaming your co-workers for taking care of your restaurant's guests. Own your actions!" She looked at me like she couldn't believe I had called her out like that and quickly walked to the back. The manager (I presume?) came to our table and apologized up and down. He was very kind and offered a dessert on the house. A little later, our waitress came to our table and explained that she was getting off her shift in 15 minutes and had to work a second job so she was exhausted and didn't know there was more mustard. We all make mistakes, and we are all human, but our waitress' brazen disrespect was clearly intentional. I will NEVER go back to Avenues Bistro. In fact, on several occasions I have insisted our group of friends eat somewhere else, and have discouraged others from even trying it. There are too many delicious restaurants with exceptional service here in SLC to waste time on somewhere as horrible as This. There's no sense paying good money to be ignored, disrespected, and flat out lied to. STAY AWAY!

    I came for breakfast and had the special- French toast- with grapefruit juice and a side of bacon. Everything tasted good and the quantity to price ratio was good. The staff was friendly. My friend and I chose to sit outside on the patio in the sun, and several staff asked if we wanted them to find an umbrella so we could sit in the shade (we wanted to sit in the sun, but the concern was appreciated). Unfortunately, the waitress helping us was very forgetful and didn't seem to know the menu very well. She had to check several times to see if they had run out of staple items my friend requested, and some parts of her order came out much later than the main dishes. Aside from a spacey waitress, it was a decent place. I'd go back if I wanted to eat breakfast on a patio somewhere in walking distance of my home.

    First visit: "That breakfast food was just okay, but this is a really cool place. Looking forward to trying lunch/dinner." Second go: "Uh oh, that's inedible. We gotta tell them. Ok, they were cool and knew they'd screwed up, so no review until a third try." Latest and last shot: "Damn. We just paid $50 bucks for one turkey sandwich (loaded with surprise horseradish and accompanied by greasy steak fries), a small and tasty Caesar, a sad Belgian waffle that came woefully short of fully round and sported no more than two tablespoons of 'fruit compote,' and some bitter (but strong) coffee." It doesn't matter how much you want a place to be good if the food isn't.

    Hmmm. Not exactly the desired response when you get a bill for around $80 for two adults and a small child. That dollar amount needs to equate to 4+ stars. Now, $20 of it was for beer, which lessens the blow slightly, but I had huge reservations about the various items and for as (over) staffed as this place was, they were remarkably slow. It's probably fine if you're on a date or solo and just chilling or something, so if that's what you're after, this will probably be better received. We weren't in a hurry, but this ate up more time than necessary, even though the decor is excellent and the interior and exterior are (mostly) well thought-out. Ambiance was also excellent. Cured salmon plate was $13, which is about double what is should have been. Salmon needs slightly more curing and noticeably more smoke flavor. Toasted slices were good, crème fraîche pretty good, capers fine, sweet pickles and shredded greens both a waste. This should have been $6.50, max, though it was presented well. Beet salad was $12 and needed both actual beets instead of just a puree, more cheese and a protein of some kind rather than the amounts in the minuscule bits of cheese and the candied walnuts. $8 would probably have been pushing things here. Taste was pretty decent. My wife got the Bistro burger at $15. The trend of deconstruction needs to end as it seems to mostly result in inconvenient and sometimes inedible food. The bun they served this on to my wife, for instance, needed to be a lot more solid than it was. Crumbling bread surrounding that much of a mess is a pain. She liked the taste well, but I found the candied bacon to be cloyingly sweet. Of the 6 fry wedges she got, 5 were underdone. My kid got a bowl of noodles ($6) which were kind of almost like a flattened ramen...very cool. I liked these a lot. He also got a snickerdoodle, which was acceptable. Likewise the Opera cake we had, which was mostly just ok. Strawberry was sour, though, adding an unwelcome note. Both of the desserts were from Back Alley Bakery, a sort of add-on to the main restaurant, featuring a miniature dessert counter behind glass. That was silly. Our server was overall pretty good, other than saying the dessert menu was us walking back there to go look (no, no it's not) and the rest of the staff was fine as far as friendliness, but again, they just took longer than reasonable. Add to that the excessive pricing, a smattering of menu offerings (drinks were more extensive a selection - though also lacking - than the food) and the parking being a pain (though this facet is not the fault of the restaurant) and this is not an experience I'm likely to repeat.

    If your are up in the avenues, stop by at this cute little bistro that's next to the Avenues Barber . It's a little bistro that also has a bakery in the back. Take the time to check out the bakery when you have the chance. There are assortments of goodies that you may be interested in. You have the option of seating indoor or outdoor (prefer the outdoor seating - feels like your eating in a garden - cute and relaxing). I ordered the Bistro Lunch Special, which is a garlic parmesan crusted grilled cheese (served with a side salad or cup of house soup), the Roast Beef (sandwich) with an order of their Bloody Mary (would order it again) and a lemon cake from their bakery. The bistro lunch special was definitely good, very very cheesy, but you also get that crunch from the toasted bread. I also ordered the cup of their house soup, which was tomato soup. Their soup was creamy and it went perfectly with the sandwich. The roast beef (sandwich - toasted) was thinly sliced with roasted pepper spread, ricotta and dill pickles. It was also served with a side of steak fries, which was crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. What caught me by surprise was their ketchup - it seemed like it was a mixed with marinara sauce and it tasted pretty good. Lemon cake was a pretty good size, filled with raspberries and blueberries inside. The lemon flavor was not too strong, but more of a subtle hint of lemon. Sweet enough and tasteful. I would recommend this place and will be coming back, especially to try out their breakfast menu.

    Ok this place might be a little pricy...though I wouldn't say overpriced. I loved both the breakfast (mushroom biscuits & gravy) & the dinner (veggie burger) I ordered. I give the food 5 stars & the service 3 stars because we had the same waitress both times & she's rude. I felt like I had to kiss up to her or she'd spit in my food.

    Most people would start a review with an appetizer or salad. I have to start with the dessert called an Opera Cake. This little piece of chocolate heaven alone makes it worth visiting the Avenues Bistro on 3rd. The rest of our meal kept up the high standards set by our dessert. We started with their famous tomato, red pepper and carrot soup. My wife didn't think she was going to be that hungry so she order a delicious fresh salad. I ordered the Lentil Rice burger that reminded me of falafel. It's is made with hummus so that may explain the Middle Eastern flavor profile. The portion was humongous which was good because my wife who had decided she was not that hungry took one bite and proceeded to inhale half of my dinner. Service was wonderful and oh by the way don't forget dessert

    Went here my last day in SLC with my daughter. Exceptional breakfast! Wonderful service. Sat at chefs counter, my favorite! I ordered the biscuits and gravy, daughter had the breakfast tacos. Looks like they have a great dinner menu as well. Wish I had time to come back again.

    Maybe the best biscuits I've ever had! Loved the mushroom gravy and was quite impressed with all the vegetarian options. Also, really good Bloody Mary for five bucks. The place is really cozy and charming with a friendly staff. Would've given five stars except a table was cleaned with Windex next to us as we were eating. Suddenly everything tasted and smelled like Windex. Ugh.

    Absolutely loved the atmosphere of this place! Did not have to wait at all for getting Brunch on a Sunday which is really rare here in SLC!! I got the turkey sandwich which came with a side salad topped with fruit and vinaigrette. LOVE. My boyfriend got the grilled cheese and it was also really good.

    Casually sophisticated atmosphere coupled with a finely honed menu of creative and fairly well executed offerings. We came in over lunch and sat outside on the patio. The area is spacious yet broken up in a way that makes each table feel intimate and somewhat private. Shade is ample, and plants are well-tended and prevalant enough to give a lush feel. Our service was prompt, professional and friendly. Our waitress had a good knowledge of the wine offerings and helped us select one we enjoyed. I had the Bistro Burger and my wife an egg dish with beans. The Bistro Burger came with about a half dozen thick cut wedge fries, which would typically leave me wanting more, but they were so thickly cut, rich, and crunchingly sweet that I was more than satisfied. A cool homemade ketchup came with the plate which was zingy and complimented the sweetish crust on the fries very well. For the burger itself, it came with candied bacon and pickled onions, as well as a gouda cheese all on a homemade bun tasting a little like a fluffy cornbread. The pickled onions were awesome, and provided a vinegary counterpoint to the sweet bacon, cheese and burger itself. The burger was said to be grass-fed, but I'm not sure I could taste the difference. Overall is was a good portion and a satisfying burger. My only complaint was that is was very oily. The sweet glaze on the bacon was running off and combining with the bacon and burger oils to create a hamburger about 30-40% wetter than ideal, and the oils worked against the natural flavors of the ingredients, which were otherwise very well-balanced, lively and unique. My wife's egg dish also suffered a surplus of grease, though again, there was a finely crafted and expertly seasoned meal shining through underneath.

    The patio is amazing on a warm night. The cocktails aren't strong by any means but they are delicious. I ordered the trout which was fresh and cooked perfectly. Absolutely loved this spot.

    Fun atmosphere, albeit a tad small as it used to be an old pharmacy. Attentive service, and we even met the owner outside...she told all about the history of the building and the neighborhood. Also, she has a garden in the back, so this is definitely farm-to-table. I ordered the grilled cheese and the soup (I think it was roasted red pepper and carrot). Good sandwich, but exceptional soup-up there with the best I've ever tasted. I will order breakfast next time and update my review accordingly.

    The good: no wait list for brunch, nice atmosphere (lighting, music, decor), decent food. The bad: food took quite a while to come out, didn't come out together, didn't get the appetizer we ordered, but got charged for it. The ugly: The server was downright rude. This really defined my experience here. She was slow to refill our coffees, and quick to clear our table. She had a sour demeanor, and seemed truly unhappy. We're all going to have bad days, but being in the service industry sometimes you gotta fake it till you make it. Summary: the food decent, but slow to arrive, and didn't come out together. The poor service really left a bad taste in my mouth.

    Disappointing "updates" to Avenues Bistro's brunch menu. Gone is the awesome waffle sandwich (the server admitted it took too long to create); gone are the huevos rancheros (my wife's favorite option there), and gone is the dessert counter greeting you as you enter (it's in the back). The veggie biscuits are still there, but the last time I had them the gravy seemed "flour forward." Avenues Bistro was at the top of list for sunday brunch places, but I think it's fallen down a few notches. (The lack of huevos may have made it fall off the wife's list altogether.)

    Pretty tiny restaurant. Apparently they are in the process of applying for a permit for patio dining so hopefully they'll get a little more leg room. The lunch was great but the lunch was not the star of the show. Avenues Bistro earns a 5 star review solely for their homemade HoHo. Moist chocolate cake, whipped cream filling, topped with a thick ganache and served with a side of raspberries. It is perfection in a 4 inch pastry. Now I feel the need to make a joke about something only being 4 inches...I digress. The HoHo is so good that I went to dinner with some friends. As I was recounting my delicious HoHo, the gentleman at the table next to me said "I hate to interrupt but their HoHos are ssooooo ggooooddd!!!!" We then had a lengthy conversation about how amazing their HoHos are and how we all needed to go buy one right away. So what are you waiting for, go buy a HoHo!!!

    I love this neighborhood gem!! Amazing nano brewery with delicious food made with care. They pay attention to details like sauces and garnishes and obviously have a skilled chef and use quality ingredients. Fabulous brunch with really high quality food and $3 bloody Marys and mimosas that are way too good to be only $3. Love the grits and the Benedict.Great place to meet friends for beers and snacks as well. Cool atmosphere. Love. Long live Rio!

    Grilled cheese + soup for lunch = $8. Not bad. ...that was my first check in. After trying to visit again early in the week, I learned they have some weird hours--not open Monday or Tuesday unless it's 'Summer'. (This visit was mid-May, so I guess they return to regular hours after the vernal equinox?) I look forward to visiting again. The prices seemed a bit high for SLC, but I'm glad to see a nicer restaurant in the Avenues.
