Where to begin... How about we start with the fact that the margaritas are only non-alcoholic. We are at a Mexican restaurant, correct? It's a pretty bland salsa. The staff is rude. If you don't let them take your order the moment you sit down, they won't come back for 20 mins... At least. The soft taco, mediocre. As is the fajita salad and taco salad... We ate here because we got caught in a snow storm and needed to stay at the super 8.... Unless it's life or death, keep on driving!

We were passing through going back to Tucson and found this place. The service was excellent and so was the food. I had the chimi and wife had the taco salad. Both were equal or better than we get in Tucson.

Where to start. The rude hostess who simply tossed the stack of menus on the table and walked away before we even got to the table? The lady who brought the chips and dumped half them out of the basket when she slammed them on the table. The waitress who made no bones about how much she hates her job and having to take your order. The hour and 20 minutes it took to get our food. The Carne asada was the toughest piece of grissle I have ever experienced. The shrimp diablo my lady had was just nasty. Luke warm, over cooked, ugh. Please just close the doors already.

Hands down the best Mexican this part of the state! We drive 50 miles one way just to eat here. Love the enchiladas and shrimp fajitas. Well staffed, friendly, attentive service.

Great food and lots of it! Friendly place to stop by while enroute to your destination. Oh and please remember to tip the wait staff...we tipped our waitress 30% Seems some folks don't tip at all for great service...now that's sad.

Great food, great service, moderated decor, no frills but overall great given the geographic location. I really enjoy a couple of dishes, I like the shrimp fajitas a lot, also very good is the Pollo Con Salsa Decrema.. Very tasty. Chips and salsa are pretty good but salsa very mild. Overall you can't go wrong here.

The El Mexicano looks like a pretty unattractive building from the outside, but the inside is a clean and a fine restaurant for Salina. Now, this may not be a 4 star restaurant in other markets, but I think this is probably the best choice you'll find for Salina. We made reservations for a party of 40 on a Saturday night. They did a great job of getting the food out at roughly the same time for each table. Everyone seemed to be happy with what they ordered. I would eat here again.

This is the thing about El Mexicano Restaurant in Saline, UT.... there is nothing else around for MILES. If we're judging it against having never eaten any other Mexican food, it is passable, sure. There are beans. There is rice. There is cheese.... But if you've ever had Mexican food made by Mexicans instead of Mormons, you'd understand why I'm giving this place 2 stars. It wasn't terrible, the service was fine, and it was reasonably priced, but holy guacamole, I've had much better Mexican food at dozens of other places. Bland City.

Stopped for dinner while traveling along Hwy 70 My wife and I both had Carne Asada. It was everything we were hoping for.great taste and large portion. Stopped in on a Friday evening at 6:00 P.M. The place was crowded and service was a bit slow but worth the wait. R.V. Parking

If you're driving i70 near salina, ut you have to make time for lunch or dinner here. I had 2 tostados de ceviche. The shrimp was perfectly cooked and the tostadas were nice and crispy. Everything had just enough lime with a hint of cilantro. I can't adequately describe how delicious they were. My wife had the carne asada con huevos. It was fantastic. Everything was perfectly spiced and the refried beans were excellent. Seriously, don't pass it up.

Hands down the best Mexican food you'll ever eat. Everything is delicious! My top favorites are the beef chimichanga (extra crispy), the grilled chicken quesadilla, the grilled chicken tostada, the chicken poblanos, or even the kids nachos. The salsa is fresh, the beans are delicious, the rice is the best Mexican rice you'll ever eat. I would drive 1.5 hours to get there, goodness I would drive 500 miles, it's that good. I dream about this place. I've introduced many people to the restaurant and they can't even go to other Mexican restaurants any more because El Mex is that good.

This is one of the top 3 Mexican restaurants I have ever eaten at. Decor and ambiance is average, but food is excellent.

Honestly not much to write home about... it is one of the only sit-down restaurants in like a 30-mile or more radius. The dining room was a hellhole overrun by out of control children, and was filthy. There were dirty napkins, silverware, food, crumbs, and who knows what else on the floor when we sat down - even under our table. Gross. The service is S L O W and the food comes out COVERED in cheese globs. (Be sure to request NO cheese if you are lactose intolerant, otherwise you're SOL.) On a positive note, the salsa and chips were fresh though. Overall a less than stellar experience, we wouldnt have chosen to eat here except for desperation/nothing else being nearby.

I love this restaurant so much I had them cater my wedding. The chips and salsa are delicious and can be dangerously addicting. But you have to save room for the entree as it is, amazingly, better than the salsa. I love the beef chimi and grilled quesadilla but every meal is outstanding!

Good, not great, Mexican food. I would'n't go out of my way to go to this place, but it's the only freaking decent restarant within 90 miles.

Stopped here on the way Arches National Park because it's at the last exit for 100 miles. Came back on the return trip because the food is so good. Fresh salsa, fresh vegetables, everything great. Ya gotta try it.

If I could give no stars, I would. Terrible food, thoughtless service and.... it made us sick. I think that's pretty much the trifecta of bad experiences. I know I'll be driving this road again in the next 4 years, but next time, I'm going to keep driving.

if you are reading this you are probably just passing through and craving Mexican food. just keep driving to where ever you're heading. I had the al pastor burrito. the tortilla was soggy and just full of nasty, gloppy cheese. the rice and beans had no flavor whatsoever. the service was slow. the chips were fine, the salsa bland.

  • Tracy K.

I wish I could give a lower rating than one star! I can't stand El Mexicano, the service sucks and the food is even worse save your money and drive a little further to Richfield to Acosta's! The food is cheaper and more authentic! Don't go to El Mexicano!

food is good and authentic. had the regular goods to sample. enjoyed the beef taco and beef enchilada, the meat was tender, moist and well marinated. will definitely go back here when i'm in the area.

This has been a lunch stop for our family for years (since they were downtown) - the recent reviews had me concerned that things had gone downhill, but we were happily surprised that the food was still good! Being from San Diego, we're spoiled with baja style Mexican food, and we don't expect the same style when we travel - but the carnitas here is very good, and our standard been/rice/cheese burrito - was gigantic and covered with melted cheese. Salsa very good! Service good -- it is still a worthy stop. For baja-style Mexican food, this is a good place. Can't vouch for people looking for Tex-mex or other variations.

Bland City is right. This is the worst Mexican food I've ever tasted with no seasoning and just plain awful. My choice of cheese enchilada was horrible. How do you mess up cheese enchiladas? My traveling partner got the Halibut special, but it wasn't much better. The chips weren't eatable and the salsa watery. Maybe I got an off night, but I would never go back to see. If you look you notice I rarely write bad reviews, but I think people need to be warned. This place should come with a warning......"eat at your own risk." What a waste of money.

oh my goodness. the food used to be really good. but it was horrible!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! chips were the only good thing. salsa was good. my mom and i had the steak burrito. it was soooo bad. my dad had a chimichanga. my dad liked it. didn't care for the steak burrito. very bad. wouldn't come back again.

I've been staying at the Super 8 in Salina thanks to a broken car. I have a few choices for places to eat in easy walking distance - Denny's, Subway and Burger King along with El Mexicano. Given that I'm from Texas (and of course we know everything about Mexican food, heh), I was skeptical that I'd find Mexican food worth a damn in Utah. I gave it a shot anyway (the thought of eating at Denny's again depressed me). My first order was plain cheese quesadillas and a torta with carne asada as the meat. I was really impressed with the quality of all the food, especially their guacamole. The next day I ordered the cheese quesadilla again (it's really good!) and the shredded beef flautas. Again, it was all excellent. This time I got to try their refried beans which come topped with melted cheese. They have a good flavor to them and made a nice addition to the meal. Rice was also included, but I've never cared for Spanish or Mexican rice, so I'm not going to judge theirs. I'm sure it's good, it's just not my thing. Tonight I ordered the steak fajitas and got dessert instead of quesadillas. The fajitas come with grilled onions, tomatoes and bell peppers (which I requested be omitted, and they were). You also get a side of sour cream, their excellent guacamole, refried beans and rice. I like cheese on my fajitas and that was extra, but that's fine with me. I believe the meat is flank steak, rather than the skirt steak that's common in Texas, but it was flavorful and easy to chew (if you've ever had a bad fajita, you know what I'm talking about). For dessert, I ordered their Cheese Cake Chimichanga. It's sweet cream cheese wrapped in a flour tortilla and deep fried, then covered with cinnamon and sugar. It comes with a scoop of ice cream, whipped cream and a bit of caramel topping. I tend to avoid things like this because I haven't had good luck with getting a non-burnt or non-greasy one... but this one was perfect. The outside was flaky and crunchy, the core of the cream cheese was still cool. Of course, I had to eat it first so the ice cream wouldn't melt! I'm here until Monday at the earliest (sigh), so I'm already planning what I'll have tomorrow for lunch/dinner. (I've been doing takeout, so I can't speak to their service as a sit down place. Everyone I've talked to has been very friendly and helpful, though. On Friday night, the parking lot was packed - always a good sign!)

I'm originally from Salina, and visit family there at least once a year. Mom's home cooking is great, but I still have make my way to El Mexicano for some Enchiladas Pobalanas doused in Cholula. I've eaten at Mexican places all over and am still blown away that one I like as much as El Mexican somehow landed in my hometown! Highly recommended.

We were traveling through on sept 20 and just stumbled into this place right before closing time. We had a couple of truly excellent pork carnitos burritos. Good food, friendly staff. Most excellent!!

Stopped in here for lunch after gassing up the car at the nearby gas station. Food was ok, standard Mexican restaurant fare. Service was terrible. Only saw the waitress a few times and she only checked in on us once. Had a chimichanga with rice and beans. Nothing to write home about. Daughter ordered a cheese enchilada but was served a cheese quesadilla instead.

I don't know what all the bad reviews are all about. This place is the #1 place in town on Trip Advisor. I decided to go in at 9:00pm (closing time) for dinner. I was expecting to get turned away, however, the waitress (Arnie) was extremely nice and was glad to let me in and seat me anyway. I had the Two Shredded Beef Taco Combination platter and the plate looked picture perfect and the taste was awesome! The Orchada was also good. If you are in the mood for good Mexican food, I would definitely stop here.

I travel all year..service is average...maybe the locals take them for granted..but some of the best Mexican style food in this area..don't agree with the negative reviews. .

Started out really good a few years ago but has gone downhill significantly. Chips and salsa were still good, but I've heard they have cockroaches now so I avoid it all the time now

Traveling between Richfield and Moab my travel companions/coworkers, whom are obsessed with Mexican food, heard about this place and were determined to stop. It's easy to find, on the main drag just off the interstate. The place is large with many tables. Shortly after being seated we were provided with water, chips and salsa. For me the salsa and chips is a pretty accurate indicator of the quality of the Mexican food. The chips were fresh and the salsa a good mix of chunky and smooth (easy to handle with chips). My cohorts requested something a bit more spicy and the waitress went back to the kitchen and came back with 2 more salsas (a red and a green) both packed just a hint more heat and pleased the palates of my Mexican food obsessed companions. Having had Mexican food for lunch that day I was unsure just what I would order. I wanted something simple so opted for the original nachos. The house chips topped with refried beans and melted shredded cheese (not cheese sauce thank goodness), pickled jalapenos (which I should have requested more), generous dollops of sour cream, guacamole and garnished with large halved black olives. A generous portion I ended up taking half to go for the road. One cohort got the chicken poblano enchiladas and the other a chimichanga. While they both cleaned their plates, my cohort who ordered the chimi was disappointed with how soft it was and he wished it was fried to the more crisp exterior, to him it was just like ordering a smothered burrito. We all thought the location was worthy of the stop and if we ever found ourselves in the area again [which any one of us is bound to end up back through here] it would be a place we'd stop again.

Three stars for food, but these really are the rudest waitresses I may have ever encountered. ( This better not show up on FB )

I really enjoy this place. Carne Asada burrito is my favorite...my wife really likes the fajitas. Never had a bad meal there. Can get super busy on the weekends for Salina.

Salsa tastes like it is out of a can. Tostatos were so BLAND . Lousy, bordering on rude service.

Inexpensive, tasty Mexican fare along a stretch of highway with not many choices. We were happy to find this friendly, family type restaurant.

The best Mexican food in Utah and it's not even close. Some people on here my call me crazy that a hole-in-the-wall Mexican joint in Salina Utah could have the best Mexican food in the state but I don't care. While I'm not a Sanpete native by birth my wife is and she is the one that introduced me to this beautiful place. My favorite thing to get is the carnitas dinner and this is the dinner I compare all other Mexican restaurants to.

El Mexicano receives 4 stars as it is a place I would come back to on another road trip. I just had a bowl of green chili with tortillas and of course chips and salsa; the husband had chicken enchiladas. Service was great, food was good, and getting on and off I70 with a new tank of gas is easy.

There are not many choices and this one is pretty good. 9 to 15 dollars per head. And the meals are really big so you will probably need a to go box. It's got a light flavor. Nothing was bold that we had from the menu.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
