Not being familiar with the Provo area, I was looking for a Mexican restaurant to go to since it was Cinco de Mayo. I found this place thanks to the reviewers on Yelp. The food was actually good. I had their pork enchilada and beef taco. Very tasty! A friend had said that it is better than Los Hermanos which is a few blocks down and probably gets more traffic because it's on the corner of University and Center. The ambience however is not as nice as Los Hermanos. This place feels like a comfy family run restaurant. Very friendly. I highly recommend. They also serve margaritas!

NIce restaurant. Super calm and chill place. The food is excellent. The menue has at least one of every kind of mexican dish. Great prices too. Nice quiet atmosphere makes it a great place to have a business meeting, or have a good conversation over dinner.

The signature bandito dish is very good. The chips and salsa are very good. And the fried ice cream is very good. The rest is good and not knock-your-socks off Mexican, but I've yet to eat that kind of Mexican in Utah.

Yummy !!! Great shrimp tacos!!! The chips were the "tell all", they were thin, crispy and no greasy taste! Salsa mild but great flavor and they bring extra. Great seasoning in all sauces, authentic !!! The shrimp were plump and grilled with onions and peppers, seasoned, delicious blend of flavors! The pork was shredded and had a great flavor in the chill verde ! Clean, cute and good service!!!

Another yelp rating that led me astray... what the hell... SMH. SMH. I think i shook my head exactly 7 times... with each item i tried. I was really mad when i left and was gonna give it a one and then I was like... what the hell?! El bandido... tortilla covered in beans (which are the best part of everything), no meat on it kind of lame... 10.99. It reminded of the Jim Gaffigan, "Whats a burrito? its a tortilla with cheese meat and vegetables. LISTEN ITS ALL THE SAME? just say something in spanish and ill bring it to you." Everything was very similar which is to say there were no taste distinguishers in anything. Pork tacos... i do not want to be sued for libel but... is it canned meat? Same with the chicken enchilada... is it canned meat? if it is that is fine... just let me know next time. Chili relleno... my fav part of chill relleno is cheese... and ehh. It just made me feel not that great right now. SO i was like okay now i need to get the lack of taste out of my mouth... maybe some flan? Oh you lather the flan in nutmeg (once again not a libel thing...) im pretty sure its nutmeg... who knows. Well now guess what taste is in my mouth? yep that nutmeg. ill just let that sit with yall. THE VERDICT: Nope. you want good mexican in provo? you better order at the register because sitdown restaurants just cant hack it. I was very surprised with all the good reviews for this place... maybe something has changed recently... but your food should never all taste the same. Don't go guys!! For all that is mighty in your beautiful life and eyes... back off.

I stopped here to do some work and relax for an early dinner. The chips and salsa were fantastic. Very flavorful and the perfect amount of spicy. The 1800 margarita was delicious. I also had the crab enchiladas which were very good with a lot of crab in them. The service was very good as well. I would definitely recommend this restaurant.

Not bad, not bad. I visited Joe Vera's with my mom after a suggestion from a former employer, and we left pretty happy. Their chips and salsa are REALLY good - the salsa has incredible flavor and I wanted to take the rest home with me. I ordered the fish taco lunch special, which was two tilapia tacos + beans and rice. There was a LOT of tilapia in my taco, which I really appreciated, but the corn tortillas had been steamed within an inch of their lives, so I had to eat them with a fork and knife. The beans were good, and the rice was surprisingly plain, which I decided I really liked because the "Spanish" rice most restaurants dole out that tastes like old Rice-a-Roni is pretty bad. My mom ordered the chicken chimichanga and loved it, which is always a good sign. I don't know that I'd order the fish tacos again in the future just because there are other restaurants that do, I think, a better job, but I'd definitely return to try some of their other menu items.

Better than I expected, the tilapia was really well done. The beans and rice were more flavored than something from a can, but just so. Salsa had more flavor than something bland. All-in-all, decent for a college town.

So! Yeah, we are spending one night in Provo and really wanted dinner and an alcoholic beverage to wind down from a long day of driving. We asked a local and he kinda laughed "in Provo?" he asked. But we did find this place and had a very passable margarita as well as steak and shrimp dinner. I have to say the steak was much more tender than the sirloin we had the previous evening at Outback. The service was speedy, polite and friendly!

I just needed to get out with the wife for dinner tonight. I haven't been here in many years. That's too bad. As TexMex goes, this is the best I've found in the valley. The 4 stars is for the food, and the assumption that I'll get the server for the table behind me next time. The one we had was no good. The server at the other table was good. The top shelf margarita didn't do much for me. Lots of ice and sweet juice. I'd rather have less of each so I can taste the tequila. As others have said, the chips and salsa are very good, although I'd like a bit more heat. The beans and rice were excellent. I like seeing real long grain rice instead of quick cook converted rice. The mains were excellent too. The server managed to ask use within a minute of getting the menus if we'd decided what we wanted. However, one the food came, we never saw her again. We asked another server to find her and still nothing. Eventually I went looking and ran into the manager (owner?) who found her. We were able to get a beer for the meal just as we were finishing the food. The handling of getting the bill was the same type of story. That gave us plenty of time to hear the moron behind us texting non-stop with every tap making an electronic blip sound. That was interrupted about every 30 seconds with the alarm sound that another text was coming it. Really annoying. Despite mediocre service and an obnoxious diner, the food made up for it.

This is a really good spot. It's a not quite a sit down Mexican place, in that you do have the server take your order at the table, but you pay at the register. The chips and salsa are great. I didn't stop eating them throughout the meal. Could have used a bit more heat in the salsa, but it was still really good. I ordered the lunch special bandido. I'd never heard of it before, so I'm not sure if this is like a standard Mexican dish, or a Joe Vera's special. The waitress recommended it, and I listened, and I didn't regret it. Delicious! I'd try it if you're looking to try something you haven't tried.

This is the best Mexican restaurant I've found in Utah Valley. The chips and salsa were fresh and had great flavor. My wife got the Chicken Fiesta Soup, and while she liked it just fine, she definitely was the one with order envy this time. I got the La Fuente with beef, and it was fantastic! This dish is the reason for the 5 stars. The beef was so tender and nicely flavored; my wife ended up eating half of my dish. Nothing all that complicated about this place -- just simple, delicious Mexican food. I'm so glad we found this place.

We were passing thru and stayed in Provo and checked the reviews on yelp for a good Mexican restaurant. This had good reviews. Maybe the people who wrote the reviews never ate at a good Mexican restaurant. The chips and salsa tasted like they were from a bag and can or jar of cheap salsa. My wife had La Fuente and it was runny and the chicken appeared to be canned shredded chicken. She asked for no green chillies in it but they did not remove them as they may have been mixed in already. The rice was just white rice with some canned carrots and peas. Not even close to Mexican / spainish rice. You can't mess up refried beans unless you burn the cheese on top of it. I had the carne Asada plate and the only good thing I can say is the steak was good. Don't waste your time here, go to Cafe Rio where it's always fresh and better tasting.

Joe Vera's is one of my favorite Mexican food restaurants in Provo Utah. Their "Bandito" is my favorite menu item. Though everything else on the menu is also excellent. I have been eating there since the late 1990's. Their fresh home made chips and salsa are truly amazing. Some of my favorite fresh salsa of all time.

This is one of my favorite Mexican restaurants in Utah Valley. It's true, the chips and salsa are amazing. Everything on the menu is delicious and fresh. The service is friendly. It can be a bit slow when the restaurant is busy, but nothing to complain about. I don't have any specific recommendations. Everything I've had has been delicious.

The BEST Salsa in town; drinkable; GREAT SAUCES, very individual to the specific dish's that I have had on numerous occasions at this Provo restaurant; The front end staff are particularly friendly and remember you as a returning customer; A wonderful place for good Mexican food in Provo;

I went with three friends, called ahead first to inquire if the crash used in their specialty crab enchiladas with Verde sauce was canned, artificial flavoured or fresh shelled. They said it was fresh shelled...never canned. We went for the 4th to celebrate...three ordered the crab...boy were we sorry... Canned not fresh crab...and so fishy it was near inedible. Like Mama Chu's Crab enchiladas. Would not recommend this menu item to anyone! For $11+ per enchilada I feel cheated. Plus the 30 + min. wait for water and entrÃ©e was long considering we were one of a few tables. The salsa and warm thin tortilla chips were great...I filled up on them. Like Vera's, but will avoid seafood there in future...should have known better...will wait before returning.

Pretty decent Mexican food. I was surprised they served hard liquor. So I had to order a margarita! I also ordered the carne asada burrito which was delicious. The chips and salsa were good as well, the salsa comes in little bowls but they leave a bottle of salsa to refill your bowl! The service was excellent and the price was decent.

The company I used to work for had Joe Vera's cater our yearly business client appreciation luncheon. The clients loved it. There food is very good. I've had many of their dishes and they are all tasty and flavorful. I would say that they have the best mexican food in Utah Valley that I've had so far. The service has been good. Some of the dishes I like are the Grande Taquitos, Tacos, Burritos everything is good! I like the Chips and the salsa is chunky and full of fresh veggies, It even has a tiny bite to it. The food is not bland like at many of the other mexican establishments in town. If you like bland don"t come here but if you like cheesy, gooey, goodness you need to try it!

We ate a late lunch here of chips, salsa and beans, plus a diet coke. Great service, delicious chips and salsa, and really good beans! Great value- all for under $5! Didn't try anything else. We eat Mexican in so cal at least a few times a week & always judge a place by chips, salsa and beans. We are pretty choosy and this place made the grade. We liked the cups (coke cups with a Y on the other side) and asked if we could buy some to take back to California. Manager gave them to us, no charge.

My first impression of Mexican restaurants always starts with the chips and salsa. With Joe Vera's, I kind of wish that's where it ended, since it would have been a five-star review. Although my fajita chicken salad was fine and the chicken perfectly cooked, my dining companion ordered crab enchiladas and received a crab salad -- this, after the server asked if she wanted red or green sauce. And after receiving our meals, it was a small eternity before we saw him again to get the check. So...I'll give the place another chance, but more for the salsa than anything else...

I tried the Bandido, since people here said it was the specialty, and I really liked it a lot. The place doesn't have a particularly Mexican feel to it, which didn't really matter to me. It was almost empty except for one or two other groups of people that came and left the whole time I was there. The chips and salsa you get as free appetizers were really good. The fried ice cream and the tres leches were both good, but I especially liked the deep fried ice cream. The waiters were really nice and it's a really laid-back atmosphere. I thought it was more in between $10 and $15 per person than under $10 on average, though.

A friend and I walked into this restaurant for dinner on Cinco de Mayo. Although, we were seated in a booth I felt quite exposed. The dining area is quite small and tables and boothes are in close proximity to one another. The restaurant is well lit, that's a plus or minus depending on your intent. Okay, on to the food. The chips were crispy and the salsa was good enough, at least they had diced tomatoes. I had the carne asada burrito for my main bite. The beef was flavorful and not too chewy. The servings here will fill you up pretty good. And of course, what is Cinco de Mayo without alcohol, and that- they have. The server was friendly and very polite.

Awesome place. Just down the street is a pricier, more popular joint, so don't get them confused. The chips and salsa are the best in town and there's never a problem finding seating thanks to the overrated Mexi place on the corner.

Service is amazing! Annette did a great job with our complicated order and was always conscientious of our every need. Chips and salsa were so good! But our favorite was the stuffed jalopeno appetizer! Joe Vera's is our new favorite stop!

Ran in here for a quick lunch today. Chips = pretty good Salsa = could have been store bought Service = good, they should work somewhere else Bandido = I've never ran into this "Mexican" dish before and hope I never run into it again - minuscule amount of beef, alot of refried beans with cheese dumped on top baked into a tortilla covered in lettuce..... odd

I'm never quite sure what drives people to Joe Vera's. The location is bleh, the food the 4 or 5 times I've been is underwhelming, chicken, beef both are forgettable . Want chips and salsa? Good place to go...want a refill on that...get ready to pay for it. Overall a no go for me.

One of my favorites if not my favorite place to eat Mexican food in Utah Valley. I love there salsa and most the time the chips are amazing. Try the Bandido or Carne Asada plate and you won't be let down.

I've yet to find a better Mexican restaurant in all of Utah. Joe Vera's is wonderful! Their service can be a bit slow, but dude, their salsa and chips are as good as it gets. I could drink that salsa (and a couple of times, I have.) I always get their crab enchiladas, which are muy fantastico. This is a little restaurant that often gets ignored or overlooked - overlook no more! You must try it, if only for their amazing salsa!

Boring but serviceable food with good service. The bandido is their specialty, though why is beyond me. Look around and you'll notice that most of the customers are over 60, old-timers for whom coming here is a custom. That explains a lot more than the menu does.

Okay, so I bumped this place up to four stars only because their beef tacos are really good (minus the fact they use pre-fabricated taco shells), and the chips and salsa are really good and they keep on coming. Aside from that, the chick who served us totally slacked on her job, my pina colada was pretty much like a slurpee where you already sucked out all of the flavor so now your left with clumps of ice that have a slight flavor of the coconut/pineapple goodness, and Josh's coke didn't see a refill for quite some time. Like I said before, there aren't many good places to find actual Mexican food in Provo, and perhaps this isn't perfect, but at least the meat they serve is flavorful and gives you a sample of Mexican food in the right direction.
