This place gets one star only because I cannot review with 0 starts! What can I say? Service was good. Food...absolutely horrible! Sushi had no taste and was soggy. We ordered Teri chicken and Teri beef. The meat tasted like it was pulled from the freezer, with freezer burn, and nuked in the microwave. It was finished off with the worst tasting teriyaki sauce straight from the bottle. We were there when they first opened. I wonder if we got yesterday's leftovers. Now, $70 later, we are still hungry.

HORRIBLE!!! Never ever again will I come here! I'm vegetarian, ordered the veggie plate and it had chunks of chicken mixed in with the veggies... And then here comes the main meal, and noticed the label stickers on my fried veggies that went into the stir fry! The food tasted like the grill has never been cleaned!!! Because of my personal experience with this restaurant, I will always warn others of my experience.

I was skeptical, eating raw fish at a strange place, so I played it safe with the rolls. The Jorge till was really good. So were the others I tried. The worst part was the service. The waitress was inattentive as was most of the staff.

We were not sure what to expect our first time here. We saw that it had a three star rating but we wanted to give it a try and see what it was like. I can't tell you how Surprised we were when the first sushi roll came out. It was the OMG and all I can say is wow. The most beautifully prepared sushi roll I think I've seen yet. And the taste was as good as the looks. The delicate mixture of herbs was absolutely perfect. We ordered a total of three rolls and we were nearly as impressed with those ones as well. All around I've got to say this is one of the tastiest sushi joints around. I'm not sure why they only have a three star review because the food was incredible. All in all I think it's my new favorite place in Utah. Zack I believe is the sushi chef. If you read this I want to say again it was top notch!

Call me biased. I good, fresh Sushi and I don't mean from the local grocery store (that's a no-go). Sushi has been a favorite of mine for decades. Zack is my favorite Sushi Chef. He creates new masterpieces on the fly and his picks have always been right-on-the-money. Whitney, server extraordinaire. Treat yourself right with Nigiri, Sashimi, Volcano rolls, an OMG, and my favorite Screaming O!

I am anxious and excited to visit this restaurant, because I have always loved every kind of "sushi". I also simply love all of the other delicious types of food that goes along with the sushi. I can hardly wait for payday to come. I want, I need more than store made/bought sushi. "I must have the real thing." "I must have SUSHI!!!" At least one or two times during my week/month. SUSHI is simply the best of the best of the best! You gotta get some

Service is great. They have private seating if you like. It's 25th St. little sushi secret.

Awesome Sushi!!! I'm here from CA and want to bring Zack's sushi skills back to Los Angeles!!! Five Stars for me!!!

Imagine walking down through 25th street in Ogden and then entering into what looks like a odd restaurant from the windows. Once you open the door you notice that there is an arch that you pass through. In Japan walking through arches in entry ways both brings the person good luck and is meant to help cleanse you of any bad feelings that might have happened previously in the day. After you walk through the arch you have the option of sitting at the sushi bar, in booths along the sushi bar or going back to sit at their themed rooms. I highly suggest the themed rooms!! Once you go into the area of the themed rooms you'll notice all of these little areas that have been sectioned off into (somewhat) private seating areas. The walls are painted with Japanese scenes and there are other Japanese decorations. Once you get into your private seating area you have a traditional style Japanese table. Meaning it's low to the ground. In Japan people usually sit on pillows (cushions) and eat their food while on their knees. Here there is a hole under the table so that you can put your feet down and still get that close to the table setting like Japan while having the comfort of not needing to be sat on your knees. The Miso soup was very good! Much better than other places locally that I've been to. The tempura was good, the salad was good, and my kids enjoyed their chicken teriyaki bowl. The waitress, Whitney, was a shining star!!! Whomever rated this restaurant poorly before due to service must have gone a while ago because Whitney was phenomenal!!! She came often to make sure our drinks were filled, to check on the food, and gave us enough time to look at our menus without it feeling like we were forgotten at all. She was very tentative to warn us when she was entering into the dining area so that we'd not be started and get food spilt on us (a note about this-in the private dining areas where you are sat on the ground the server has to get down on their knees while holding the serving tray and then return back up with whatever is on it. She never split any of it, nor did she even come close to spilling any of it. On top of the awesome waiting ability she was so, so courteous!! My parents were with us to celebrate my daughter's 13th birthday. My dad talked to her for a good 5 minutes and she was smiling and very polite to him the whole time. She offered to put our cake for my daughter in the fridge and when she brought it back out they (she and the cook) had put candles on the cake for her. It was a really great evening! The only 2 things I'd say that could have possibly rated them down was 1. the food is somewhat pricey. However, the prices were comparable to other themed restaurants and Japanese food tends to run a larger price tag for some reason. and 2. All of the tempura was good except for the broccoli. They needed to batter that better since it seems the tempura batter wore off while cooking leaving a sad looking (and crunchy) bit of broccoli. These were minor things in comparison to the evening at whole. PS I told Whitney that I didn't understand why the bad rating on yelp and she explained to me that they had a totally new manager and that the last one was basically what everyone on here said it to be. If you went a while ago and you liked the food and atmosphere I'd say try going again since now they seem to have someone who knows how to run a business managing it!

I do not recommend this establishment to anyone. In fact, I am surprised they are still open. My family and I went there for lunch. the waitress did not seem to know what to do with ordering on their iPad. The first entree ordered, we were told they did not have all the ingredients to make for it. Then on the second order they said they couldn't make it because they had no eggs. These two entrees were off their non-sushi menu. I ordered sushi, and that was their only saving grace. The sushi was good. However, they brought out one meal first way in advance of everyone else's and then completely forgot to make one. we had to cancel the forgotten meal because everyone else had gotten their food and we just shared it with the person left out. The serving staff was not professional and also did not ask how it tasted or if we wanted refills. Then the waitress tried to say they were sorry for all the mistakes because the kitchen was busy -- we were the only people there at that time!!!! Lame excuse!!! We will never be going back, even though the sushi was good. If you want better food and service, head a couples blocks up the road to Tona Sushi. That's what we will do.

Okay I love Shin Sei! The two times I've been here, I've had nothing to complain about. The service: our waitress was the definition of courteous, helpful and attentive. I had trouble ordering some sushi because my date was just a little picky and I had the privilege that she brought over the sushi chef so we could give him the details! I had ordered the Jasmine tea and it never got cold, she was very understanding on our lack of knowledge and will be a strong factor when I return. The atmosphere: Upon arrival we were asked whether we would like to be seated in the dining area or a private room and went with the private room. It's a little strange at first but the bamboo "walls" the low seating, the statues and the intimacy you can achieve is very nice if you're on a date. The food: I had ordered the veggie tempura, the Tuna lovers, a salmon roll, two hamaichi nigiri, a tiger shrimp roll, and a coconut mango dessert roll. I loved every single one of them. There was no "fishy smell", it tasted very fresh, appearance was beautiful, they weren't excessively large nor flavorless. The cucumbers, Avocados and veggies used all tasted very fresh and were crisp and crunchy In essence I love Shin Sei, nothing went bad for me and you bet I'll be back!

Love the food! It is always fresh and delicious when we go there. The only complaint I have is the service during the lunch hours. Whenever my husband and I go there for lunch, it seems as if we are invisible. The waitress hangs out at the bar, jokes around with other employees, sits down at the next booth over with friends, and walks around to text. Horrible lunch service, but the service at dinner was amazing by far.

Went to the sushi bar last night and the service was terrible! Waitress acted put out when we asked for water! Servers were watching TV and socializing. Acted like they didn't care if we were there or not. We were the only 2 people in there for about 20 minutes and you would think we would have servers pestering us - NOT! Which is too bad since the sushi was actually good and 1/2 price. I don't think we will be visiting again just based on the lack of service. We had tried them about 1 year ago and had the same issues.

Great sushi! Great service! All those old reviews from 2011 are no longer valid. We were originally going to go to Tona, but the wait was too long and we found some coupons to Shin Sei online, so we decided to try it out. So happy we did! Service was great, food was even better! The sushi chef came to our private little sit in the floor table and helped is with the menu options and have us great suggestions! We were there with my aunt from San Francisco who is very snobby about sushi because she is used to posh sushi places with fresh everything and she was absolutely in heaven with everything we got at shin sei! The fried calamari was fabulous - so good we got a second order of it! I would STRONGLY suggest the garlic edamame. And the sake was great. The hamachi was so fresh! Can't say enough great things.

This was my first time here. Their Vegas roll is amazing! Our waiter Zach was very on top of things. Our drinks never ran empty and our rolls came out quickly. Their house salad is also really good! I would definitely eat here again!

I went with my wife and children for lunch. Both the service and the food were horrible. The sushi was slimy. The teriyaki chicken my son ordered was dry and the sauce they used tasted like it came from a jar. The dishes were not clean. The waitress was OK until the end ( I will get to that shortly) but the "manager" who also was preparing sushi removed all doubt that this place is terrible. His demeanor put us off as we felt we were an interruption to his day even though we were the first customers of the day 45 minutes after they opened. From his nonchalant and unapologetic way he said they had no soft drinks due to running out of CO2 to his comment of "Oh hell" as he looked at a woman with a baby entering the restaurant. After eating, I went to the waitress to ask for the owners name or phone number to let them know how the manager ruined our experience and was denied any owner information. She said to leave my phone number for a call back. I did. As my wife was walking by, the waitress looked at the manager and rolled her eyes but did not realize my wife witnessed this. It is clear that she too was apathetic to how her manager's bad attitude also affects her business. Finally as we were leaving, my wife said we would not be back and the manager said "Good. Easier for me". I am not sure what that even means. From the ongoing, long-term common theme in these complaints about terrible food and service and the low overall rating of this restaurant, it appears that either the ownership does not read reviews or does not care.

Terrible service seems to be the theme here in the reviews. I almost didn't come. But here I am with a plate full of sushi and the best service I've ever gotten at a sushi place.
(5)Mike J.
Disgusting. My fault for walking in the door. Both hamachi and tako not edible, roe smelled like it had been in the sun. Would not go fishing with their bait.
(1)Alyssa P.
I honestly don't know why this restaurant has such bad reviews! They have such great sushi!! My boyfriend, who is a local sushi fiend, goes there all the time and its one of his favorite places for sushi! The people leaving bad reviews couldn't be more wrong!

Shin Sei really is hit and miss. But most of the time, it's a miss for me. Occasionally they wil suprise me with good service and good food, but most of the time, it's like paying to sit down to listen to someone scratch nails on a chalkboard. I really REALLY wish it was like the old Shin Sei that I once knew, but I think they must have changed owners, and after that, it was all downhill. I could overlook some things, but only if the service was better. The service at Shin Sei is terrible. On my last visit, the waitress came by about every half hour, and I had to remind her about picking up my soup. It came to me COLD. I had her to heat it up, it came back cold AGAIN. She seemed irritated that I was asking for refills. And forgot to pick us up new chopsticks and napkins several times. She also forgot to actually bring us our food a few times, and asked if we wanted our check BEFORE we had out sushi entrees. Let's just say, for my $45 dollar dinner date, the only tip she got was my two cents. Literally, just two cents.

We've only been to Shin Sei twice. The first time, a few years ago, we were unhappy because the sushi was way overpriced for the low quality. But, the most infuriating part was, our server was rude, and when she was not serving us, she was seated at the bar, eating sushi, watching Flavor of Love with the sound on. Nothing kills date night like Flava Flav. We went again recently, and it hasn't gotten much better. We sat in the private rooms, so no Flava Flav, but the sushi tasted old and lackluster. Just walk down the street to Tona.

My husband and I came here to use a Happenings Book coupon for BOGO. The service was terrible. I got ONE refill of my drink. We were the only ones dining around 7pm and the waitress seemed irritated that we even came in. When the check came and my husband gave the waitress our coupon, she let out a sigh of aggravation and processed our check. The sushi was decent, but I would never pay the money for the terrible service. We won't be coming back.

Imagine, if you will, eating day-old supermarket sushi in a sports bar. Now imagine paying $40 for the experience. That's Shin-Sei in a nutshell. Truly, the most atrocious sushi I have eaten in a long, long time. We're talking ice cold rice with the texture of paper-mâché, and fish with the flavor of paper-mâché. I couldn't even manage to choke down one roll and eating the salmon nigiri was like eating slightly fishy eraser. Even copious amounts of soy sauce and wasabi couldn't save it. Not recommended.

The service was great!! Tori was awesome and very entertaining. Zach had some excellent off the menu creations. Highly recommend the restaurant. Half price specials during the week. Very friendly atmosphere. I'll come back when I'm in town again!
(5)Kristin G.
I literally couldnt eat my sushi, it smelled so badly, I took one bite and spit it out. Never, ever again.

Gag. Can you say food poisoning? I think food poisoning RATES 0 stars - but that isn't an option.. Lots of people I know have gotten sick here also. Slow ass service. Nice waitresses. Sushi tasted old. Decent prices.
