Okay I eat here often! So I must like it, right. It is almost a great place and if the owner wasn't a stingy basted it would be. Don't get me wrong, if you order everything his way it is a real bargain, but if you want to substitute anything, the up charges are really bad. After substitution charges my $9.95 breakfast just cost 14 bucks. Really dude? All that a side, they have good food and huge portions. I recommend this place but know that subs cost a lot

I think that the most accurate rating for this place would be about a 3.5. Very good food, and great menu, and a great local feel, and also a good historical feel of the early mining days in this area. When I travel, I like to blend in with the locals and experience life much as the locals do. This restaurant, which has apparently been in business in this spot for many years, not only has tons of wall decorations and displays that reference the colorful mining history of this area, but the restaurant is also frequented by all the local old-timers and tradespeople, and so it has a very genuine feel. Food is good, menu is good, service is good, and the setting is great! Having said that, I will add that when I am at home, I tend to eat largely organic foods and meats, dairy and eggs from drug-free and pasture-fed, cage-free livestock. I want to make totally clear from the start that if this is the kind of food that you are looking for while you are in Midvale, or if you are looking for low-fat foods, or for restaurants that do not use cheap cooking oils, then you will NOT find it at this restaurant!

Midvale Mining Cafe is an old, diner-style restaurant. It looks to be a local hangout, but with some nearby hotels it probably gets some out of towners too. The place itself feels like it belongs in a small Utah town, not 7200 South, in the middle of the Salt Lake Valley... It's kind of run-down looking inside and features mining themed decorations throughout. But how's the food? Unfortunately it left something to be desired in my opinion. My wife and I both ordered the chili verde breakfast burrito and the first thing we noticed was that the chili verde was red, not green... Despite that color it was pretty good. The burrito consisted of scrambled eggs and hash browns (on the side) and smothered in lots of sauce and big chunks of pork. It came served with your choice of toast on the side. The breakfast burrito was pretty good, but pretty far from delicious. It was certainly not the best breakfast burrito in town. Overall I was disappointed by the Midvale Mining Cafe. The restaurant itself is run-down looking and the food was not very good. I'd be willing to try it again another time, but I won't be jumping at that opportunity anytime soon. There are many other places in Salt Lake I'd rather get breakfast.

This state is in need of quality cafes, this place meets that mark...it's so good, I recommend the omelettes. Also, it has rather quick service.

Went there for a business breakfast. I ordered an omelet and hash browns and I t was not good at all. Under seasoned and very bland. On the other hand, the scone was great. I will not go there again for breakfast.

Went for dinner very disappointed. I had shrimp dinner. Frozen fried shrimp canned green beans and a baked potato. Very forgettable. Wife had a grilled chicken dinner just OK. They serve dinner with scones. I though great. I got rubbery dough ball. For the scones the have butter and honey flavored spread. There are about 10 ingredients in this spread. You have to go to the 6 item in ingredients before you get to butter or honey. Honey butter is not that expensive and taste much better. No reason to go back.

Nice place for just your basic American food. Came here with a few friends. I was really in the mood for chicken fried steak. I was happy with the soup that came with dinner. It tasted of homemade, that they made it in house instead of from can. That surprised me. And it was quite good. I got the chicken friend steak and mashed potatoes. It had a white sauce. Creamy and brothy like it had chicken stock. The steak was good, not the best but it did its job. The potatoes I think were instant, but it is a cafe serving up food quickly and cheaply. It came with corn. I had to salt my food a little. But that's better than having it come over salted, when you can't fix that. I was impressed with the size of their scones. the size of the saucer, they were hot and delicious with the honey butter I put on it. You can get that at the store, the honey butter stuff they use. The service was pretty fast as well. The waitress didn't lag too much when we needed our drinks filled. She checked on us, was friendly, and didn't mind explaining things at it was our first time. This would be a good place to hang, if you're not too worried about the food, and need space to chill while you stuff your face with comfort. Only down side is no breakfast after 5pm.

Chicken fried steak and eggs with crispy hash browns... Yes!!! Could have used some salt but it was filling and delicious- not to mention cheap!! The scones were just incredible. I recommend getting it at the end of the meal, dessert style.

Great food! Short wait. Decent prices. Friendly service. Just eat here. Trust me, you will not be disappointed. I had the Western omelette with added sausage and my buddy had chicken fried steak and two eggs. We also had two pancakes. (Don't judge me) All of our food was perfect.

First meal at this place - Prime Rib!! Weekend Special $14.95. Honestly, it was as good as far classier resturants could serve. Medium rare; pink throughout - and tender! Delicious! Great service. I believe I found the best diner in the area! Good home cookin'.

They had great sausage and light gravy biscuits and gravy The service was quick and great on a Saturday around 10:00, but the pancakes were lacking.

Bland is the word that comes to mind. Had fish and chips, described as halibut, flaky breading, etc. What i got was basically Costco fish sticks dropped into adeep fryer and fried hard, yet with mushy insides. This was accompanied by some frozen corn fresh out of the microwave, and some surprisingly good fries. Also making an appearance was something they called a scone, but more closely resembled fry bread, yuk. Wifes meal was equally tasteless. Service was soso, prices reasonable, decor and furnishings old and worn, and a bit dirty. My advice, give this place a pass, my 2 stars were a gift.

This place was bizzzzzy on a Friday morning with many (80%) blue-collar workers who behaved as if they've been regulars here since MMC opened, some 25 years back. The other cross-section (20%) of patrons here were likely travellers staying at one of the nearby motels along west 72nd by the freeway. My personal favorite is The Discovery Inn, although I'm not sure I want to know what one would "discover" there. After driving past this quaint little diner a thousand times, we finally stopped to sample the breakfast fare. We were seated immediately, and service remained very friendly during our visit. Wait staff here seemed very cordial and efficient. No one was standing around. Coffee was refilled without needing to flag someone down. Orders and bill were correct in every way. They offer a decent breakfast menu featuring omelets, french toast, steak-n-eggs, pancakes, and the like. Pretty standard. We opted for omelets; Spanish and Denver. I tried their specialty scone on the side in lieu of toast or pancakes. On the Coffee-Snob coffee scale, they score 6 out of 10. The coffee was barely above standard diner brew. Not bad, but nothing about which I'm going to write anything further. The omelets were HUGE, and came with a HUGE serving of shredded hashbrowns. Both omelet versions were okay. The flavors didn't pop, but the veggies were fresh and they were cooked well. I was a bit disappointed in their cheese selections; either American (their standard), Cheddar, or Swiss. I guess for a diner it was fine. Hubby said their salsa on the side was terrific - fresh with great flavor. The scone was my favorite part of the meal. The only problem was that they brought it barely warm, with a very cold squeeze bottle of "Honey Butter Flavored Topping." It's the same stuff you can buy in the refrigerated spreads section of the grocery store. Meh. I would have strongly preferred real butter and a squeeze bottle of honey. Reasonable pricing for the serving size, acceptably good breakfast food, great service...overall, yeah...we'll be back. Someday. Probably...ish.

Great little mom and pop classic diner feel. Lots of local history and a good menu. I try and go in Saturdays for their special, prime rib or Alaskan Salmon. I highly recommend it and if you leave hungry it's your own fault they serve a three course meal when you order a special.

We are from out of town, and I must say this place has the best service we have had our entire stay! The waitress was friendly, attentive, and quick. The portions were huge and the price very reasonable. I can see why this place is known as having the best breakfast in town, and is filled with locals. I highly recommend the chili verde over hash-browns.

We love this place. This is a place we go on sundays. And as a family. We also like to invite some of the elderly in our neighborhood. Give them a day out. A good meal. In a comfortable atmosphere. They always keep good company and so greatful for getting out.

Pretty good food, nice staff. Quick service. As with any good joint, red chili verde should be outlawed. But overall a good experience.

First time here was with the bro who brunch crew. This place gives me that historic feeling from the outside, especially when the sign says they opened since 1985. They decorated this place with an old Utah mining theme, the interior feels a lot like an old American diner, and the patrons are mostly mid-age to elderly folks. Parking is somewhat limited on a busy day like Saturday, and you may end up on the street, but they are very close to the TRAX, so that might be another option. It was a hungry morning, and I ended up getting their four eggs omelette with hash browns and pancakes, which turned out to be huge portion. I managed to finish the entire plate somehow. The only cons I could think of are the lack of a decent spicy sauce and a little bit cheesy on top. Midvale Mining Café is definitely a solid place for breakfast, especially if you are into diner foods... unless you are looking to stay on the healthy side.

This place is legit for a morning that you need to stuff your face. The building is cute with all it's mining decorations. She kept topping off my coffee, delivered the food quickly, the food was tasty.

Normally I love me some midvale mining company but today's experience was subpar. There was a hair in my sausage patty. And when brought to my server's attention she took it off the check but provided no other discount. In addition I ordered the south of the border which is supposed to be chile verde over hash browns. However, when it came out it was red. It tasted like chili cheese fries with pork. It was good but not what I expected or wanted. Needless to say I will not be returning to Miners anytime soon.

So the food isn't out of this world but it's plenty good ... It's the people you come here for. Everyone is just very nice, very friendly, and make you feel at home. Great place.

Basic food, friendly service and big portions. I was one of the few women there. Next time I should try something healthier than cheese omelette, hash browns and sausage.

This place isn't the worst nor the best. But you for sure get a pretty good size portion. This is a great place to get your money worth, for a big portion of food. I'll definitely go back to try something new off the menu.

The food is good and the portions are big. The service is slow and we have to wait for a server to take our order. I love the ambience, it's very cozy and the deco reminds me of and old cafe. Everything is great except the service....they need to hire more people.

Really really fresh and hot food!! When I go to Utah I make sure I go here!! The service is always great and like I wrote, the food is fresh & hot!! Down home cooking for sure!!

One thing I've learned over a couple of visits to Midvale Mining Cafe is that this place gets a hoppin' on Saturday mornings. There's lots of places to sit down and dine, and nearly every one of them will be packed full of people looking to get their breakfast on. So what's the draw? Well, if you like classic diner fare that come in generous portions then you'll probably join the Saturday crowd for heaping plates of hash browns, eggs, toast, pancakes, and four-egg omelette. (As a side note, I've always preferred the fancy two-tee spelling of omelette to the plain omelet version. Not that anyone cares.) What you won't find on the menu is any mention of things that are "locally sourced" or seasonal. Or trendy. They've been at this a long time, and when you serve up a big breakfast for a reasonable price, people come knocking. As ambiance goes, it's actually nice enough. They don't try to capitalize on the kitsch of being old. It's not "old and dumpy and we don't care" but it's also not trying to be anything it's not. There are tables. There are chairs. There are servers. The theme may be miner-oriented, but they're not serving up dishes and having you use a pick axe for a utensil. It's a diner, theme and ambiance fall where they may. For travelers along I-15, you'll find the easy-on and easy-off of this place a quick convenience. Rather than stopping in at another horrid burger chain you can see anywhere across our great country, you can actually have a seat and get a real meal. They're quick about it (even on Saturday morning, once you've been seated) and although it's not a signature Salt Lake meal, it's surely a comfortable and filling one. As a side note (that people may actually care about) MMC has been super involved in the Midvale community for years. They've been supportive of local clubs and organizations and deserve some mad props for that.

I always order breakfast food here. The flavor is great and the portions are enough for two to three people. The food is very American, so it is a bit greasy for someone might be watching their diet. I like that they have scones (the fried dough kind, not the European kind), but I don't think they let the dough rise before frying it up... I guess I'm old fashioned.

    (3)
  • Ainsley D.

The only thing I can stand by 100% at this place is their scones. I love them. The honey butter they serve with them is perfect and delicious. The only thing I come here for.

Average diner food. Large portions but not fabulous food. Service is pretty good though as it seems like they report employees a long time so they know everyone and what they are doing.

This place rocks little bit of utah history and great food found that if your a local you love it I guess its a utah thing best breakfast in midvale p.s if your a health nut its not for you.

Excellent service. Salad was half macaroni salad and half iceberg with three dried out slices of radish. Prime rib was a massive slab of grey meat with bland carrots and a baked potato. Came with a "scone" as they call them in the mountain west, we know them as fry bread. The "honey butter" stuff's main ingredients were corn syrup and something partially hydrogenated. Nothing that is really suitable for human consumption. The service was good, and the waitstaff was friendly, but the food....hmmm.

    (2)
  • David And Tina C.

The service here is GREAT! They are so friendly, and helpful! Large portion sizes, the food was pretty good but what sold us was the service. That matters a lot to us. We've been driving past this place for years, always saying we'd stop in. Since we made the decision to have the dollars we spend eating out be spent on locally owned businesses, we finally had a chance to stop in. We were greeted when we walked in, and every staff person we encountered while being shown to our tables were smiling, and very friendly. Our waitress was very attentive and seemed genuinely happy to be there. Needless to say she got a large tip.

That was one of the most awkward experiences of my life. Being a young person, it was terrible coming to this place. All of the old people that crowded this place all stared at us as we ate as though they had never seen somebody under 60 before. The chili Verde omelete was horrid, and had nothing but chili Verde in it... no eggs, no meat. Ew. My bf's chicken fried steak tasted spoiled. The only perk was that the waitress was nice. We will never return.

    (1)
  • Loni W.

This was terrible a place. From the processed cheese to the reheated bacon. They rave about their scones and brought out bottled honey butter. So if you love bland food and burnt coffee this is the place for you.

  • Charles S.

I've heard wonderful things about this place since the 80's! I finally ate there recently and I don't get it. We had a large group and we went there for breakfast. My eggs were excellent, but the breads were all stale and the potatoes were undercooked, which made them virtually inedible. I think I'll give Midvale Mining Company one more try, based on the other reviews here and all the good things I've always heard. Maybe they were just having an off-day.

Big portions of average food. Nice, quaint atmosphere. Seems like small town cafe charm.

If you're going to get breakfast in Midvale, you might as well go to the Midvale Mining Company. There is an abominable dearth of breakfast eaters in this world, with the masses switching to nutritious yogurt "drinks" and fortified granola like bars in lieu of the traditional breakfast. You know what I'm talking about-you ran out of the house this morning with one of them in your hand (if you ate anything at all), and you let the hash-browns, pancakes, oat mill, cereal, waffles, fruit, bacon, sausage, orange juice, and a myriad of other God-given gifts on the table, cupboards and fridge. Because seriously-what is a morning if it doesn't include at least a pound of bacon grease? But seriously, folks, let's get back to basics. Let's get back to breakfast (can you tell that I ran out the door without anything this morning? My belly's giving me no end of grief, right now). Midvale Mining Company might be just the place to start. No mines, but lots of great breakfast food, including a plate of crispy hash-browns and easy over eggs that I enjoyed for breakfast one day a week or so ago. So worth it. And I so wish it had been this morning. [grumbling stomach]

I have had two distinct experiences here. Lunch and dinner. I love stopping by on a Friday afternoon to get there special the prime rib. It is cooked well, priced well, and fills me up. It comes with a side of cooked carrots (which I normally don't like, but these are great) and a large scone that reminds you of something you grandma would make. Thanks service is almost always super fast so you can get in and out on your lunch break. Dinner on the other hand is a disaster. There service is slow. The waitresses don't check on their tables enough and most of their food is just okay. The prime rib for dinner is still great and comes with a salad and a potato, but the service and the rest of the food makes this a lunch only restaurant for me.

Went there last night (7-28-2015) with another couple. Have been there many times before but will NOT be back. It was the worst steak I have EVER tried to eat. Over done (I ordered medium), no flavor and was like cutting shoe leather. My cousin's was the same. She complained soon enough that they reduced her bill (thank goodness). I paid full price--$14.95 Service wasn't the best. Server said it was a NEW cook and she talked to him. Hope it helped the next unsuspecting patrons, cause it sure didn't help us. Not giving any stars because I won't be back and wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

Crazy that it took me this long to eat here! It was a great Sunday destination. The prices and variety are great, and the customized booths and bar stools add charm. Husband had the Chile Verde Breakfast Burrito, and like a few other reviewers, wasn't thrilled with their rendition, especially for breakfast. I had the Chicken Fried Steak Lunch, and was happy with the big carrots served today--not overcooked. The scone was the closest to my Grandma's that I've had anywhere, and I was happy that I could get real butter on request. While the CFS itself wouldn't have made my list, the gravy put it there. Their Country Gravy is made with bacon! Bacon! Lots of items others were served look great, so I can't wait to return.

We really love this place for a Saturday morning breakfast! The whole family eats for a reasonable price the coffee is good and the waitresses know what they are doing. Food is good and atmosphere is old diner style. Love the oatmeal! Bacon is crispy. We have been several times and the food is consistently good!

  • Brian S.

I have been coming here for years for breakfast and lunch. The omelettes are great and so is the french toast. For lunch I almost always get the club sandwich but if its friday I always get the lunch special. Save room for a scone, they are some of the best around!

  • Nick H.

A good breakfast hotspot. Lots of locals. Very homey and chill. Mining pics and whatnot strewn about the place. A cute little Rube Goldberg gumball dispenser by the restrooms. Their signature thingy is a fried scone. You would be foolish not to get one. Don't be a fool. This is not a farm-to-table type of place but they do a lot of cooking from scratch. One of my regular stops when I'm in the area; give it a shot.

  • Kade P.

If you're looking for a classic American breakfast joint, with decent coffee and a nice selection of foods, this is a great spot. Their scones are thick and heavy, doughy and delicious. The honey butter they give with it is also very good. The chili verde is red, a little bit spicy and very good. Tender pork in nice bite sized chunks makes for a great side to most breakfast dishes. The eggs (I order over-easy) were cooked perfectly and topped the hash browns well. The bacon is thick-cut and lightly crispy. The gravy is a light color, made with bacon, and is a great side order as it is priced at 50 cents. Great local spot for breakfast, forget about Denny's and get over to the miners club!

  • D. W.

Mining-themed sort of "greasy spoon" diner. Bench seating in center aisle was too low, almost uncomfortably so. Decor and ambiance were very homey and inviting and moderately interesting. Service was friendly but a bit chaotic. The food wound up being very solid, if unspectacular fare and as mentioned elsewhere, there is a lot of it for the money. I wound up getting their cottage cheese and egg plate, which was the only thing that sounded remotely interesting on the fairly scant and a bit uninspired menu. To their credit, though they also included an inexplicable bed of lettuce, the tomato actually had taste to it and they served it at the consistency that I like them most, which is somewhat firm but still flavorful. The scone was overly doughy and sweet for my taste, even without the squeeze bottle of honey butter sauce. Pancakes were decidedly average, but the bacon was in good shape and the kitchen staff did an excellent job cooking my eggs to the way I ordered them, so no complaints there. Wife ordered a veggie burger and cared not to repeat the experience ever again. It's really about as you'd expect from a place like this, an expectation that begins when you walk in the door. You're going to get cheap tea (but outstanding mugs), a very light menu, sort of haphazard, featuring dishes incorporating various mining terms (specific to this place, of course), decent service and food, but nothing that will be memorable one way or the other. Places like this do well for either locals or travelers looking for a pit stop, but there are several other places in Salt Lake of this type that have passed them long by.

I've had the macaroni shrimp salad from this place since someone brought it during a pot luck. It was bomb! Finally had the opportunity to go inside the restaurant and try other food. So glad I did. Oh man. Went in for breakfast, it has a homey feel, which I loved! Service was prompt and courteous. The food was delicious and just perfect. The scone was to die for!! I can't wait to go back, I think I'm going to be a regular! :)

Huge portions. Some people complain about pricing, and blandness. I think any of the $10 omelettes are great. If $10 is too much then go across across the street to denny's and save yourself $2. My food has been anything but bland. If the food wasn't good here then there wouldn't be lines out the door on weekends.

I've been happy with the food here. There is never a wait and its pretty much what you would expect from a diner place like this. The scones are really good and they serve good hot chocolate as well.

Stopped here to eat and look at what they had for mining history. The food was on the spendy side for the quality you get. I wasn't too impressed. Probably won't go back.

  • Conspicuous C.

The portions are generous, but the rest of the breakfast experience was crummy on a Sunday morning. Slow, surly service. The OJ is from concentrate, not fresh-squeezed. The pancakes are rubbery. The biscuits are stale and the gravy is watery (as is the coffee) . Perhaps I just felt out of place because I was the only male under 60 not wearing a mullet.

    (1)
  • Jen B.

Food is decent. It's your typical diner food, nothing really wrong with that. I like that they gave me a pickle and lettuce on the side to go with my French dip sandwich. But the service was curt and not necessarily friendly. I felt rushed a bit, and the smell of the place was pretty gross, like old hotel smell. Also, it was a couple dollars too expensive for the quality of food you get. I probably won't be back to eat here again.

    (2)
  • Tori A.

I've been here a couple times and always have good experiences. They give you a ton of food for a reasonable price. I really like their macaroni salad. I had salmon last time I was there and it was good. I had to make the sacrifice not to finish it in order to have some of my scone with the honey butter instead. :)

If they have the Chile Verde breakfast special when you go, please don't waist your time. A few pieces of pork stewed in canned enchilada sauce isn't Chile Verde. Everyone else used common sense and went for the standards and everyone else was content. The waitress was great, she had a great sense of humor and it was contagious and put us in a great mood. The place is probably exactly the same as it was 40 years ago but its clean. I'm sure I'll be back to give it another try I just ordered wrong.

Midvale Mining Co. is a great joint for a down home American breakfast & delicious lunch. I highly recommend the breakfast burrito or bacon cheeseburger with sauteed mushrooms. Always order a scone and smother it in honey butter!

This place is a nice diner, greasy-spoon, type place. The service is good and they food is tasty. The Prime Rib was surprisingly good. I would never expect that in a place like this. I don't care fo salmon but my husband and MIL tasted it and said it was good. It wasn't seasoned much but just a nice fresh piece of fish. The salad is basic but also comes with a macaroni/tuna salad on the side - yumm - like mom used to make. They serve these scones .... I never saw a scone like this. It looks more like fry bread to me but who cares??!!! You fry me a piece of dough cover it in honey butter and I am in love.

This was just down the street from my hotel. You get a lot of breakfast for very little money. You've got to love a place were a side of bacon means 6 huge slices. Staff is friendly and service is fast. I'll be back to try dinner before I leave town.

As important as it is to have a good breakfast to have for lazy mornings, they are hard to come by. My friend and I discovered this place while heading up to the Airport and I've been hooked ever since. It has the classic diner feel and the food is no exception. I've tried the South of Border, which has great hash browns and green chile. But usually I get steak and eggs which they often have as a special for 7.95. You get a great morning steak with some A1, two eggs, and toast for almost nothing! Best breakfast place I've found in Utah.

The food is good but not the healthiest--can be greasy. However, portions are large for the price; you definitely get more for your money than at IHOP. Scones are a novelty. Good service.

Traveling from California to Salt Like: great home food place. Affordable, friendly, yummiest place in the neighborhood (at least from yelp reviews). Customer service is wonderful!
