This is what a road trip is all about. Country roads, vast expanses of nothing but beautiful scenery, hidden burroughs that whisper of great connections to history now forgotten, and mom and pop businesses that are the backbone of middle American life. The town of Loa in Central Utah is a perfect example. Here is where I now vamp to the tune of "You can be in such a hurry to get where you are going, you fail to see what is right in front of your face." Distracted by boarded up, crumbling Victorians, highway cones and torn up pavement, dead weeds and even more dead hollyhocks, I nearly missed the grey brick and Pepto bismol pink walled building that bears a sign that says, "home style cookin', trailer park, laundromat , showers". This is Country Cafe. This is a *must* stop. The exterior foretold the inside, with the mismatched diner furniture, some fishermen sitting around the table exaggerating fish stories, cedar walls, a chalkboard announcing, "Welcome Hunters" and a list of the day's specials and pies, and a smiling frazzled haired waitress who made sure you were comfy. "Sit anywhere you like", she encouraged. The menu was small. The prices comparable to city diner fare. There were books set by each table, all by the same author, all quick reads, snip-it's and quotes intended to amuse you while you waited for your meal. They were funny. I must get them. The coffee was good. She kept it coming. The 8 oz chicken fried steak was not 8 oz. It was more like 10 oz., and it was beautifully seasoned, lightly dusted, cooked perfectly. The country gravy was rich and creamy with generous lumps of good country sausage. We ordered more gravy just to make sure no bite was left naked. Two eggs and one big pancake finished our order. Glad we shared. It was filling. It was all good. The love and warmth coming from its owners can be found in the food. Make sure you seek out this little place when you plan your next trip thru Utah. Yelpers, you got it right! Thanks to the tune of 5-star diner right. Vamp..."You can be in such a hurry to get where you are going, you fail to see what is right in front of your face."......(I wrote that).

Good food, excellent pie and service. It was a good stop -there were 8 of us -we all ate something different - chicken fried steak, pancakes, burgers, soup, sandwiches and we all had pie! Excellent crust! They serve breakfast all day. Service was quick and they accommodated our big group with separate checks. We'll be back

This place is surprisingly fab-U-lous! We missed all the food places in Torrey but we're starving so we took a chance on this tiny cafe in a tiny town. I love it when a hole-in-the-wall is a secret gold mine! Hubby got the chicken fried steak and said it was easily the best he'd ever had. I've never cared for it but one bite and I was convinced he was right, it was so tender. The biscuits and gravy tasted like home. I ordered the pecan pie (homemade!), it was warm, buttery and dee-licious! The service was great- the owner and his family waited tables and cooked everything. For being so out of the way I was surprised at the constant stream of customers, obviously the locals know they've got a gem. We almost drove by afraid to take a gamble but this one paid off w

The food is good, but the service is leisurely. The proprietors are friendly and welcoming. Breakfast is served all day. They serve country-style, comfort food in a small, rustic, lodge-style interior cafe. They appear to mostly cater to outdoorsy patrons- hunters, hikers, fishermen, and other outdoorsmen. Camouflage clothing is common during certain seasons.

Good breakfast in a very small town. Ate here before going to FishLake, everything was tasty and the service prompt.

How many times have I driven to (or through) Loa and never stopped at Country Cafe? Too many. That's changed now, and I'm happy to report it's another example of small town Utah eats at its finest. Country Cafe sits on the west side of the highway on the north end of town. Since I'm usually coming down the highway, it makes for a nice stop when the road hunger becomes too much. Pull over and park, then mosey into the front door. Moseying ain't optional. You'll be joining the rural folks here--Wayne County locals, mostly--and it's a farmer and rancher kind of crowd. Perfect. The menu is simple. Take X and fry it. Burgers, fries, and all the things you'd come to expect. It's much more than a burger stand, though. There's a small bar and several tables where you can be seated. The kitchen area has an open door and you can see the crew working hard back there. The food is all pretty good. Big portions. Homestyle. I've not been for breakfast but it sounds pretty great. I should also mention the pie. I sampled a boysenberry slice, and while it's not much to look at on the plate, it's classic pie. I inquired about its origins and the kind fellow serving me replied, "My wife makes 'em." Perfect again. I had super zippy service. They were slammed, but I got in and out quickly and it looked like food was coming quick. Can't say if that's always the case, but they looked to be fully staffed. As an added bonus, they're open Sundays. Bickness is quiet as can be, and it's not until Torrey that you really find much going on, so if you're out over the weekend and don't want to venture into the craziness of touristy Torrey (and you may or may not want to--it's rad in its own way) this is a great option to dine where the locals dine.

This is for BIG eaters only, the pancakes hung over the plate and weighed a good pound. The breakfast burrito was the size of a small log. All the food came out hot and pretty tasty. The service needs a little help but they tried their best.

Vikki & Don really know how to give a warm welcome to their guests! Having a meal at the Country Cafe is like getting a big hug! Breakfast, lunch or dinner can be ordered any time (with a few exceptions), and their menu is filled with all your country favorites. It's a bright star in a small town! Don't miss it!

This place is great! We stop by whenever we're in town for solid small town breakfasts, sandwiches, and even dinner. Everything you need and nothing you don't.

Stopped here for lunch en route to Capitol Reef. We both had the patty melt on rye, which comes with pickles, lettuce and tomato on the side. The sandwich was great, although I wish the mayo had been on the side too... Onion rings (an upgrade from Utah's ubiquitous Lay's potato chips) were really crispy and not greasy. The apple pie a la mode for dessert was excellent.

Big Ol' Boys in trucker and cowboy hats, an entire girls basketball team whooping it up, some local drifter type getting heavily chatted up by local lonely girl, walls full of clocks with wolves, indians, bears, white tigers and waterfalls, all for sale. Yay! It's rural Utah baby. All the color a city slicker could hope for. And the food is good too. Nice burger, great breakfast, good coffee. Friendly staff. Well worth a stop.

Ate here twice while visiting Capitol Reef: once for dinner and again a couple of days later for breakfast before we hit the road back to Salt Lake. Very local flavor for sure with friendly, funny hosts and farmers, cattlemen, and families as clients. The breakfast is strongly recommended- big and traditional (the items are listed by meat with eggs, pancakes, etc. as sides!). Pancakes are big and fluffy. Had a burger for dinner (they only serve dinner twice a week) which was tasty but average. Beware the "English chips"- they are not steak fries (what exactly are they?).
