    Dinner service was lovely. Beef tenderloin was fantastic. Lobster bisque was spicier than normal; a nice twist. Ladyfinger dessert out of this world. Tapas options limited but executed perfectly. Definitely plan to return.

    Ok, here's the thing. I don't write 3 star reviews, either for good restaurants having a good night, or for poor restaurants having what seems to be a better than average night. I don't get paid to write reviews, so I believe in writing reviews to highlight great or totally crap experiences, ie reviews that I myself would really appreciate seeing AHEAD OF TIME. So why 1 star for Cade Madrid? We used to eat at Cafe Madrid a lot for 10 years, mainly before they moved from their 39th Sth location. Back then I was a HUGE fan. Since they moved to Highland Dr I've eaten there 3 times, and each time has been worse THAN THE TIME BEFORE. Tonight my wife really wanted mussels, so I relented, and we ate there. We ordered two appetizers each. One, an octopus dish, supposedly octopus chunks grilled, supposedly amazing (their menu description), was just awful - Tough, flavorless and overly oily. The second, a shrimp dish served in a red pepper and garlic sauce was, well, just ok, but barely. We both ordered the mussels appetizer intending those to be our main course with a desert to follow, and WOW, they were just awful, I mean AWFUL. Worse, they came in EXACTLY the same mediocre sauce as the shrimp appetizer, except the mussels came out really fast from the kitchen and SUPER hot (microwaved?), and tasted like crap, I mean really like crap. At best they were maybe frozen, but they were uniformally tough, flavorless and in the case of a few rancid. Usually I send food back when a dish disappoints, but tonight all I wanted to do was get out of there. VERY SAD, WILL NEVER, EVER GO BACK.

    What really makes Cafe Madrid so amazing is the atmosphere and the setting. It's like a little home with a beautiful, cozy, romantic atmosphere. The booth we sat in had cute little toss pillows! The food wasn't quite as good as we were expecting, but that's only because we had heard constant rave reviews. The Brussels sprouts are a must! I don't care if you like Brussels sprouts or not, they're awesome. The chicken Marsala was also amazing. I even enjoyed the mushrooms and I hate mushrooms. The chicken was so tender and juicy and the sauce was impeccable. My husband got the pork tenderloin and just thought "mehhhh". I got a side of potatoes that came out as nothing special... Just simple, overpriced potato chips that didn't complement my meal. This was my fault; I ordered them. But I wish I would've understood that they weren't anything special. All in all, I enjoyed Cafe Madrid. They offer quite a different dining experience compared to most SLC restaurants.

    It's been at least year since the last time I was here, I was happy to see that the quality of service and food has not changed. We had the bull's balls and spinach croquettes for appetizers and they were just delish! We also had the lamb shank, duck, Chilean sea bass, and paella, everything was just amazing. And the wine list did not disappoint.

    Really not impressed with the place as a whole. Very expensive for what you get, which isn't much. Let's just say small portions with over inflated prices. Had the calamari appetizer, barely enough to feed two...though it was tasty. The salmon was just okay and definitely not worth the price they charge. The waiters seemed to be a little snooty. Definitely not going back!

    Dined at Cafe Madrid mid July for my 25th birthday. Had high hopes, have heard nothing but great things. The sangria was probably the best I've ever had! The mussels were delicious!! (I ended up having the remaining tomato sauce boxed up and used it with some penne. Yummy!! Our entrees was the most disappointing which was a real let down. My boyfriend had the lamb, was tender but the sauce it was smothered in didn't have great flavors. The entree only came with the lamb so he had to order his rice separately. I ordered the snapper, again not very special though I did really enjoy the apricot rice. We had the flan for desert best in state hands down. Overall nice experience, beautiful decor and prompt service.

    I have driven by many times and have always wanted to try this place. Well, we finally were able to try it last night and boy was the food amazing!!! 5 stars to the chef. We started with the croquettas. Hot yummy balls of ham and cheese. I ordered the Pollo Marsala for my entree and let me just say I have never had better. Hot buttery mushrooms saucy goodness. I literally licked the plate clean with my bread. Speaking of bread, it was perfectly cooked. crispy on the outside and hot and soft on the inside. The asparagus was crispy on the outside and perfectly cooked as well. We splurged and ordered dessert which was also top notch. I had the creme Brule. spot on. fine dining at its best. yummy. I am craving it now and would go back 100 times. The service was great the food was greatest.

    I am from Spain, and everytime I feel homesick, their paella makes me feel like home. It is expensive but because seafood in Utah is expensive everywhere. Good job guys!

    Delicious, and light lunch venue. I had the veggie light sandwich and it was full of fresh flavor. Frank Sinatra playing softly in the background and the eating room is filled with sunlight. Our waitresses were very sweet. I just love places that aren't franchises and still have that home-made and home served feel. Great place, we will be back!

    Everything was very good. My favorite was the Gazpacho, and the zucchini they served as a side with the Filo Salmon (special). Brussel sprouts was one of the nightly specials. Seems a little early in August, but maybe they're coming from CA? If so, too bad. Brussel sprouts are SO good from this area if they just would have waited a few weeks. Copa dessert was excellent. But again, I wish they'd use produce that is in season. It came with strawberries, but peaches, blueberries or black berries are so much better this time of year. Service was excellent. They have outdoor seating, but it wasn't open last night. I'd like to sit out there next time.

    Horrible. Heads up, We had a dinner today in this restaurant and was one of the worst experiences ever. Expensive, very pricely, they served the food at the same time even we requested not to do it. The "paella" was really small, not even close to one of the real spanish paellas, with tomato sauce ( paellas don't have tomato sauce!!!) As Spaniard, I don't recommend this place. We went 3 spaniards from Pamplona, Madrid and Soria and food wasnt even close to our country. If you want to eat real spanish food, don't go to this place. Chef, my advise, check it out your kitchen, it's burning down.

    Perfect as always; nice to know you can have a place to depend on for romantic dates. Everything is low key and the servers really pace everything well, so you're comfortable and enjoying the meal, never feeling rushed. You get older servers who know their food and wine and have a passion for it, not someone hating customer service. The recommendations from the servers are also great! The sausages in fig sauce combined with the bacon-wrapped shrimp was a great suggestion! The decor is great with all the hand-painted artwork, and the ambiance and lighting is just right. If it's your birthday, the place get a little fun as well, especially when they bring out the wine-flask ;) The food is incredible; however, just as a warning, the plates are a bit small, but the flavors do it justice. If the pricing doesn't bother you (it's a little expensive, hence the 4 stars), just order 2-3 tapas along with your meal and you'll be fine. We had the pork chops in raspberry sauce and the beef in manchego sauce, both I highly recommend. If you haven't been here yet, definitely make it a date-night and enjoy!

    Wonderful experience! The staff were all attentive to our table. Our waitress made great recommendations so that each plate pairs well with the next and so on. We had called in and requested the Tortilla Espanola. Delicious! You can't go wrong here. Great atmosphere! Well worth going on a first date or your 25th anniversary!

    I was visiting SLC and had dinner here twice. The first night, all tapas. The second night, one tapas (plums wrapped in bacon) and a red snapper dish. See photos posted on Yelp. Both meals were incredible. The service was also great. The owner stopped by both nights to talk, and she was very charming. Highly recommended restaurant!

    We order everything on the menu with seafood (except if it had beef for pork) including the special of FILO wrapped salmon and we feasted wonderfully! The tapas plates were well proportioned. Everything was cooked delicious. Favorites we the seafood stuffed peppers and the octopus. The only thing we all agreed that wasn't so good was the (plain?) mayo as a dipping sauce for the calamari. Would prefer a cocktail style sauce or spicy aioli. Will definitely go again.

    I loved the food. First time here, I had the lunch special and it was fantastic. Had desert as well, red velvet cupcake and chocolate covered strawberry it was soooo good! The cupcake was moist and not too sweet, just perfect!

    First: I'm from Spain Second: The food quality of this restaurant is awful. Maybe the worst paella i've ever tasted. Paella doesn't have tomato sauce, nor a slice of orange on the top. This paella was just boiled rice with tomato sauce and some toppings, warmed up in the microwave. THIS IS NOT PAELLA AT ALL. The "pimientos rellenos de pescado", exactly with the same tomato sauce as the paella. I wonder if they use the same sauce for everything. I can't believe this restaurant has some many good reviews. Americans i'm sorry but this is not spanish food. There was a good thing though, the blond waitress.

    I tried this place for lunch and both our dishes were really good. With a cup of coffee and 2 deserts we were $50 into it. It's expensive no matter how you look at it, but it's good.

    Wonderful and authentic Spanish food. Great service as well. The best part about the food was the unique flavor combinations. I had my birthday dinner here and they had a Spanish birthday ceremony which was also very unique. All of the tapas were extraordinary, and had their own flavors to them. At one point in the night, the Macarena went off what was hilarious as the music that they play at Madrid is very low-key Spanish guitar, that enhances the mood greatly. Overall, my visit to the cafe for my birthday was fantastic.

    The food was pretty good, the atmosphere was well above average, and the service was okay, but the portion sizes were a bit on the skimpy side and the menu is somewhat over-priced. I should go back to try more of their menu (tasted the meat sampling appetizer, seafood-stuffed peppers, pork loin, and the sea bass), but the value-to-price ratio may delay that for some time. Don't get me wrong, the meal wasn't bad... it's just that if I'm going to spend well over $100 on dinner for two (and just two courses), I can think of a number of other restaurants in the area I'd rather go to.

    Don't waste your time and don't trust the menu on their website. It is apparently "outdated". Had an extremely bad experience but decided to give it another try which was a bad idea. The women helping me flat out ignored me and walked away when I asked a question about my order. I ended up leaving without any food. Not worth it. Won't be back.

    The outside/ the look of the restaurant is very cute. The inside is cute too. But the food is just ok. I didn't like how loud it was inside (we came for dinner on a Saturday night, maybe it's not always this loud) it was packed and very noisy which reminded me of the Cheesecake Factory.

    Great atmosphere and service. Brussels Sprouts were divine!!! I ordered the meatloaf which was a special, but I wished I ordered one of their more popular entrees off the main menu. The meatloaf was too mushy and I came across a couple of pieces of fat which turned me off.

    I have eaten a few times - at the old location and at the new. I am always disappointed. The food just doesn't taste fresh and authentic - not like when I have visited in Spain. There are too many overly cooked dishes for my taste. Is the paella really worth the two day notice? The new location is better than the old in many respects but it still feels like a stuffy, and expensive place to eat.

    Most amazing authentic Spanish cuisine. My husband lived in Spain for several years and misses the food until we found this gem. Amazing food and atmosphere. Try a bunch of appetizers! We sometimes go and just order appetizers. The servers have the best recommendations as far as what goes well together. Hope you love this place as much as we do.

    A real Spanish restaurant in SLC...who knew! Quite small, especially if weather doesn't allow al fresco dining, so reservations a must. Run by a wonderful Spanish family with gracious service and outstanding food and Spanish wine list. Only 2 "complaints" - birthdays celebrated with very loud trumpets for too long ( but followed by great ritual) and paella must be ordered 24 hours in advance ( which I WILL do next time!). Based on the appetizers, lamb, meatloaf and chicken Marsala, the paella has got to be killer!

    It is difficult to compress two hours disappointment, but here is my best attempt....Most disappointing meal/service I have had in years. We went for Valentines Day, and the experience was awful. Our server had no knowledge of the menu. His exact words were "the menu is new to me and you are as familiar with it as I am." The food was $69 per person for a price fixed appetizer, entrée, and desert menu which seemed very reasonable for a fine dining experience (which we did not receive). We started the meal with a disappointing amuse bouche that was a green olive and pimento from a jar on top of a square of cinnamon raisin bread with a little Spanish ham on top. My wife's appetizer course of bacon wrapped shrimp and Spanish sausage was very good and the high point of the meal. When our entrées came, my wife's duck was over-cooked and she did not eat it--she made a point of ordering it mid-rare and got mid-well. My short ribs were overcooked and so dried out I left a significant amount on my plate. Throughout our nearly two hours meal--the last 30+ minutes with our partially eaten meals pushed to the side--we were basically ignored by our server despite making several polite attempts to get his attention as he walked by us multiple times without slowing down. Multiple tables that were seated after us completed their meal, paid, and left before our uneaten plates were cleared. We finally got the owners attention and let him know about our experience and asked for our check. He "graciously" took ten dollars off our $185 bill because we skipped the desert course. The owner let us know that he was not able to do any more without further "fact checking" after service was over. He did promise to call on Monday to discuss since they were too busy for him to resolve it immediately. Will post a follow up if/when we hear anything.

    So, Cafe Madrid was our choice for Valentine's Day dinner out this year. So many recommendations for this place; we could deny ourselves no longer. We made an Open Table reservation and showed up on time. We were seated within 10 minutes by Todd, the overly enthusiastic host. Todd desperately needs to tone it down a bit. CM's ambience should say "romance," not "see me for a great used car." The building is beautifully decorated, I'm assuming year-round, not just for VD. Roses adorn tables and walls. Tasteful Spanish art appears throughout. Beautiful Spanish guitar sounds surround diners. Tables are set up primarily within the two large dining rooms, and are very close together. We saw many near-misses between all the servers and trays. We couldn't pinpoint which server(s) was assigned to our table, nor are we sure that there was only one. Several different servers dropped by to take part in our evening - one took our order, another brought items, and yet another checked on us throughout our evening. Top-notch service, all around. CM offered a Valentine's prix fixe menu, which, although somewhat limited, included some great-sounding choices. Sangria and delicious crusty rolls were delivered first. Then came the tapas course, consisting of Gambas con Bacon (shrimp wrapped in bacon - the hit of the night - served with a tiny ramekin of fig compote), and the Sopa del Dia - a fantastic Lobster Bisque. I was looking so forward to trying CM's paella. But, the only paella on the prix fixe menu was vegetarian. And to be honest, I wasn't too certain about that. So, we looked on. Our final entree choices were Pollo Marsala and Chilean Sea Bass. Both were served with potatoes; the chicken with CM's famous fried potatoes (really good potato chips), and the fish balanced on a bed of creamy mashed. The sea bass was our overall favorite. A large sea-steak, cooked perfectly, topped by a nicely flavored beurre blanc sauce. The chicken marsala, however, was very standard. I've made better marsala at home, which caused us a moment of "wait...HOW much did we just pay for this?" I'll tell you how much - $62.00 per person. Because dessert was included, we opted for the house Chocolate Mousse - the only one of the three choices that sounded good to us. Again, it was extraordinarily typical - as in, equal to something you'd get at TGI Friday's. Another minor disappointment. Bottom line is, overall it was pretty good, but definitely not worth the steep price for the evening. On our way out, I was so graciously handed a beautiful, long-stemmed red rose. It was such a nice touch, and did help slightly to relieve the sting of the evening's expense otherwise. I'm just not sure how soon we'll be back, but we will remember our VD evening at Cafe Madrid more or less semi-fondly...

    A perfect ten for presentation. The food was less than par for what I would call a new trend in Utah.....Tapas!! Love the concept of little plates but these plates were much more complicated than what you would find in Spain. Please hold the mayo, Utah's love for mayo needs to end when you enter a tapas restaurant. I would like to see Cafe Madrid find a cook from Finca or Eva and have them redesign your menu. A lighter more fresh food needs to be served.

    One word: AMAZING. We've been going here for years and have never been disappointed. The tapas are to die for and the dessert is amazing. The staff is knowledgeable in what goes well together flavor wise for tapas, they've introduced us to many things we've never tried before, like the tortilla in combination with the mussels or clams. The calamari melts in your mouth. The new restaurant is gorgeous and feels intimate. The owners are very warm and welcoming. Everything we've tried on their menu has been fantastic and fresh. If want a place for a night out, be sure to try here!

    My husband used to live in Spain and likes to reminisce of that time, so we were looking forward to trying out Cafe Madrid. Let me first say that I enjoyed my dining experience at Cafe Madrid. The food, service and atmosphere was good. However, it wasn't great. I wasn't impressed and it did not meet expectations. We won't go back. The food- We were mostly there for the paella. (You have to order this 24hrs in advance (totally dumb, I've had paella at several restaurants without having to order it before you get there and it worked out just great)). We were not impressed with the paella. It had too much spice in it, over-powering the flavors of all the good stuff (seafood and saffron). The seafood was also over-cooked; it was dry. Overall, it was good, but definitely not the best I've had. Not what would be expected of a 4 or 5 star restaurant. We also got butifarritas con brevas and croquetas. The croquetas were really good. The spinach was much more flavorful than the ham, surprisingly. The butifarritas con brevas was really good, also. Though, it was only sliced sausage with fig sauce poured over it. Note: You also have to order tortillas 24hrs in advance, which makes absolutely no sense as it does not take long to cook. The service- It was fine. We had everything we needed most of the time, but it was super slow. The paella took a long time to come out, which I don't understand since we ordered it 24 hrs in advance??? I don't think the waiter ever asked us if we needed anything or if everything was ok. One thing that really bugged me is that he clearly was trying to get us to order more food and raise our bill. We originally just wanted to start with one tapa and go from there. He gave us some bs about how the croquetas we just ordered were a "dry" tapa and that we also needed a "saucey" tapa. We foolishly took his advice. Whatever he was talking about was totally bs. I understand you want a bigger tip, but there's a reason why we aren't fat and were not going to get food we don't need just to spend more money because you are greedy. After all, we didn't come close to finishing the paella. Our server didn't give us mints with our bill which we saw on every other table... Also, I told them when I made reservations that it was for my husband's birthday. Nothing was done about it, but somebody else had a little birthday thing with ice cream and a candle and some supposedly traditional birthday drink water from a bladder (I don't know). Again, the service was fine, we got what we needed, but definitely not what I expect from such an expensive restaurant. Value- Totally over-priced. $12.50 for four slices of sausage about 1/4 inch think with some fig and sugar sauce on top? Ridiculous. If the food and service was better or the portions were bigger, then it might be worth it. But, it's not worth the price. Atmosphere- I actually really liked the atmosphere. It was cozy and decorated well. It was too loud for my liking, though (but not as loud as some places).

    What happens when you drop a tapas restaurant into the Mitt Romney/assisted living paradise that is Holladay? You get oversized small plates accompanied by Spanish guitar and cloying perfume evidently purchased in bulk at Costco. Some of the food is pretty tasty-the pulpo was nicely cooked-and it is all quite rich. Order conservatively. The owners and staff are really nice. If you live in the area, you really should try it, but I don't think I'll return unless I want to do some prom watching. I bet it's packed on prom night...

    I've been here several times now and love it. On occasion I find myself trying to find an excuse to go to S.L.C. just to see if they're serving "bull's eyes" that night. I thought the owners were amazing people as well. Beautiful setting, fascinating people and wonderful food.

    Honestly? Our first visit to Cafe Madrid couldn't have been any better. I've been craving Spanish food for a long time, especially since I did a study abroad in Spain last year. I was looking for a place that actually served authentic Spanish food that could bring me back to the fond memories I had in the exotic country. I searched up their menu first online to see what the price range was. I saw two of my most favorite Spanish foods right at the top of the menu: Tortilla Española and Paella. However, there is a notice that asks customers to call ahead and give a 24 hour notice when ordering these items. I was worried about this and quickly called the restaurant. Luckily, the man on the phone told me that they still had both items available and put me down for a reservation. Let me just say that this place is BEAUTIFUL, inside and out. It's definitely a more upscale and fancy place to dine. Good thing we were dressed in semi-formal wear or I would've felt underdressed. The owner, Todd, was the one who greeted us and made us feel right at home. He sat me and my boyfriend at a table that felt super luxurious with a wide view of the restaurant. Todd called it, "a table fit for a king and queen." My server was super friendly and helpful. She attempted to give me recommendations although I already knew what we wanted. However, she did suggest that we order something a little bit more flavorful to go along with our Tortilla since it's "dry." We ordered the Gambas Con Bacon and honestly, the Tortilla was delicious as it, and I actually didn't find it to be dry. But I'm still glad I got the Gambas. The sauce that comes with it also goes well with the bread. The bread just kept on coming (Spaniards LOVE bread...but so do we!) and we kept gobbling it down because it was so fresh and delicious. By the time our paella came out, we were nearly full. But we were lucky because the paella is normally $20/person but that night, the restaurant had a tapa-version available of the paella so it was $20/plate instead. This saved us some money because there was no way we could eat more than one plate anyways. I'm used to paella being a little bit more water-y but theirs was still rich, nonetheless. What I loved is several different servers came to fill our water, take our plates, deliver rolls, and package our leftovers. This shows me that the wait staff works together very well and watches out for each other. Overall, I give this place 5 stars because of the fantastic customer service, good quality food, and beautiful atmosphere. The prices are definitely a little expensive but I would take this restaurant over a rip-off like Log Haven anytime. I'll be coming back...probably for an anniversary celebration...or just when I get another craving for Tortilla again!

    Incredible!!! Brought my husband here for dinner last night. He lived in Spain for 6 years while in the Navy and loves Spanish cuisine. I've heard good things about Cafe Madrid so this became his celebration spot. We were not disappointed. We arrived at 5:30 and the place was near empty but it allowed for a lot of personal attention from Tomas, our server (and the owners son). Tomas was the best of the best. He was very attentive, offered menu suggestions and chatted with us about his most recent trip to Spain. We couldn't have asked for better. We decided to forego the entrees and went straight Tapas for dinner. We had the Croquetas, Gambas Con Bacon (bacon wrapped shrimp) Cazuela De Pimientos Del Piquillo Con Gambas Al Ajillo (shrimp in a red pepper sauce) and Entremeses (assorted meats and cheese). All were awesoem! The Croquetas were melt in your mouth good. You have a choice of Ham or Spinach, but we got a mix of the two and didn't regret it. The red pepper garlic sauce on teh shrimp was flavorful and garlicky (we love garlic) and the flavors made your taste buds do the Happy Dance. We dipped our bread in it since it was so good. I could have just grabbed a straw and drank it all up!. The Entreneses plate was also good, with Serrano Ham, Lomo and Chorizo . The meats were tender, moist, not at all dry and flavorful. I usually do not like Chorizo, but this was an exception. It was very tasty and not at all salty or overly spicy. The Gambas con Bacon came out sizzling adn the cream sauce they were in had a mild flavor, not overpowering and an excellent compliment to the shrimp. Tomas brought us a sample of the fig sauce which we mixed in with the cream sauce and it was a flavor explosion. The atmosphere was warm and inviting. The tables decorated beautifully and the booths had fluffy pillows on them which gave it a warm and inviting feel. This place is beautiful! I told them it was my husbands birthday and they provided something special, but like a previous poster, I will not devulge what it is. Let's just say it made the night very memorable. Overall, great food, excellent service and a wonderful atmosphere. It's a bit expensive, but we thought it was worth it. If you expect a quick meal, think again. They firmly believe in not rushing the diners and it was a very relaxing meal. We were there 2.5 hours and never felt like they wanted us out. A truely unique dining experience.

    Good meal ruined by an arrogant manager over a $15 more bottle of wine switch. No matter how nice the environment and how appetizing the food is... one does not wish to come back if they feel under valued and not worth the time to please. That was our impression upon leaving. We recently moved to SLC from the Dallas area. I guess that is another reason I was amazed at the callousness of the manager on duty. There are so many restaurants per person in Dallas that they bend over backwards to ensure a great dining "experience". Cafe Madrid has wonderful tapas, a nice environment (the 3 of us sat by the fireplace), and a pretty extensive Spanish Wine List. But if you are not a regular or somebody "in their eyes," I don't think your patronage is valued. The whole dining experience becomes not good or unsatisfactory because of this one but important component. I have traveled the world as a flight attendant. Been to Madrid and Barcelona numerous times. I was treated better there by the "owners" and I didn't even speak the language! After being seated, the waiter asked if we'd like tap water or bubbly water. We chose tap and it is some of the best tap water I have ever tasted! :-) We were then asked if we'd like some wine. We said yes and were left with a wine list. I got out my reading glasses to see it ( I am vain and wear them as little as possible), and I also chose my tapas from the menu at the same time. I picked an '08 Ribuero Del Duero mostly Tempranillo wine. I chose it because it was an '08 and reasonably priced. We ordered 4 tapas for the 3 of us... Two shrimp ones, croquettes, and a grilled cheese one that was a special. Our waiter was very good and described the tapa special down to the chopped green olives on top. I don't like olives and asked if I could have it without. He said I could. It came with the the minced green olives on top. I just scraped them off and ate the rest of the tapa. I informed the waiter of it and he apologized saying he should have noticed or assured they weren't on it. I found this not a big deal and wasn't going to let it ruin anything. Back to the wine choice, long story short they did not have my selection and the waiter brought out one he said was comparable (2011) and pointed it out on the wine menu. I had removed my glasses at this time and did not see it very well. I could tell it was in the same category and from the same region as the wine I picked. So I was okay with it. During our meal the water glasses became empty and a guy dressed in street clothes came by to fill them. I jokingly said, "You don't look like our waiter" and he arrogantly says, "I am his boss." He doesn't introduce himself just that one statement and moves on. When we received our bill, I discovered the "comparable" replacement wine was $15 more than the one I had chosen and that they no longer had in stock. I informed the waiter that I was not aware of this and might have chosen differently. He said he pointed it out to me on the menu and I accepted. I told him that I had taken off my glasses if he recalls and could not see the details. He said he would talk to J.C. (His boss, the arrogant water guy, and a manager) The waiter comes back and says that JC said since it was pointed out to me on the wine menu and we drank it, we have to pay for it. I felt like we'd had a wine "bait and switch" just done to us. The proper way to switch the wine would have been to say, "This is a comparable wine but is a little more expensive one" as he pointed it out on the menu. I was thoroughly disgusted that JC didn't even give us the time of day to apologize for the confusion or try to make it better. In conclusion, tapa places are becoming quite common and there are some very good ones in SLC. I recommend you visit them for the best overall dining experience! Good food, great environment, nice wine list, and appreciation of your patronage. P.S. Tomas the maitre'd and apparent nephew of JC the manager did seem concerned about our experience and after hearing of it offered us a $30 gift certificate. It was a little too late though. Besides, it wasn't the $15, it was the fact that we didn't feel valued enough for the manager to give us just a few minutes of his time. Filling water glasses was obviously a higher priority than trying to satisfy us- his customers.

    The food was very good as was the service. The tapas were the best part of the meal. The entrees were good but I would do only tapas next time. Though we had a good experience, it was pretty expensive for what we got. Would probably go back, but would most likely order just tapas and wine.

    I love this place. Happened to drive by and stop here for some dinner. The tapas is excellent. Peppers stuffed with whitefish stuffing Grilled cheese (like halloumi) with carmelized onions and a balsamic reduction Calamari with homemade aioli Pulpo of course Then sea bass for entree What an amazing meal. Will save this gem for special occasions.

    We went to Café Madrid on Christmas Eve, and it was fantastic. We were a party of 8 since my parents and sister were in from Chicago and joining us. We were seated quickly and had the menu explained to us. the food was fantastic, as was the wine.

    Tried this place for the first time... Delicious! Came here for a valentines group dinner and I am very glad I came! The restaurant is on the corner of an intersection, really easy to find and has lights around it during the night. We ordered the calamari appetizer and it was delicious! We also ordered the grilled beef tenderloin with a cheese sauce which was cooked perfect and very tender!! Overall, very satisfied and the servers there are very nice as well!

    One of the most delicious meals I've ever eaten. I went there with my family last week, and we ordered the special tapas pairing ('grilled cheese' (not the sandwich) and plums wrapped in bacon). Both delicious. For my main dish, I got the chicken marsala, and it was to die for. The sauce was so rich and delicious. Other family members got the sea bass and Spanish meatloaf which were also incredible. For dessert, we got flan and a lemon custard. Also incredibly tasty--the flan was the best flan I've ever had. The waiter also helped us with wine pairings for our food. I'm not a foodie by any means and I've never been to Spain, so maybe the few complainers of this restaurant have more refined palettes. Whatever. I thought it was incredible, and I'll definitely be going back. The ambience of the restaurant is great--kind of European/romantic with lots of art and detail. The booth tables even have pillows--pretty cool. The only reason I gave it less than one stars is the pricing--it was a little steep. But I'd happily pay that much to eat that meal again. Like I said, I'll be going back, and I recommend you try it too.

    The chicken cordon blue is heavenly! The water is definitely not tap water. The ambiance is great and the service was super friendly. I'd highly recommend this place to any one looking for a great experience. The lunch menu is definitely not too expensive. I'm sure dinner is a different story.

    I know it's been a while since I've put up one of these, and I really have no excuse. I've not stopped eating around at great restaurants...I've just been slack in telling you about them. That ends today. And for one good reason: I had a meal so incredibly AWESOME that to not say something about it would be a travesty. Truly. Cafe Madrid. It's "that place" I have driven past for, literally, years, first in its old location up on 3900 South just a quarter mile from my home, and now its new place on Highland Drive where I pass it on my less than regular trips to the gym. Finally, with my Better-Half's birthday on the schedule, I decided to give it a try. I called ahead for reservations, and we walked through Cafe Madrid's doors mid-evening at the appointed time. Greeted by a quiet, almost hushed atmosphere, we were quickly and graciously greeted and seated. Within moments of taking our seats (cozily right in front of a gas fireplace), we had menus, drinks, and were being greeted by what seemed to be either the owner or manager. "Welcome to Cafe Madrid," he said with a broad smile and a gentle accent. "I want you to feel welcome. This is your house." We ordered and had just settled into conversation when the waiter returned bearing our plates of Pollo Marsala (aka Chicken Marsala) for me and Salmon Con Setas Y Tomillo A La Pimienta Verde (or Poached Salmon Served With Mushrooms And Thyme In A Mild Green Pepper Corn Sauce) for her. At least it seemed like it was that fast. For as much as the menu items were going to set us back, I had expected something of a wait for our food. Instead it came so quick we half expected the meat to taste like it had just come out of the microwave, tough and chewy. Au contraire, mon frere. The chicken was tender and succulent, so delicious that our eyes went wide with the first bite. Even the mushrooms that spangled the plate under the marsala sauce were delicious...and I never like mushrooms. It was all I could do to keep my Better-Half from eating only a bite or two of my food. She wanted the whole thing. Which isn't to say her salmon wasn't fantastic. It was, moist and fresh. Living in the middle of the continent, I've come to just expect I'll never have good salmon except when I visit my family in the Northwest, but this was pretty close. Was Cafe Madrid a huge win? You better believe it. I just can't understand why I took so long to try it out.

    This restaurant was easily my favorite place we dined at while in Salt Lake City. I didn't order the tortilla or paella, but ordered the tenderloin instead based on the waiter's suggestion. It was delicious! Everyone loved their food, my only word of warning would be the "fried potatoes." I anticipated a homefries type of potato and instead received a chip like potato. I should have stuck to my original baby potatoes. Otherwise, it was all delicious! Our service was really outstanding and also proved to be the best we had in Salt Lake. Our drinks were always filled, he was polite, and had great recommendations. He also handled our ribbing and joined in our banter which impressed us as we were no easy group. All in all, great money spent and a wonderful way to end our trip to Salt Lake City!

    A good day is when I can look back and see only small mistakes left in my wake. The more time I spend with family the bigger my mistakes seem to get. Thank goodness today I had three mistake-free hours spent with friends at Cafe Madrid. I remember eating here once about eleven years ago. Since then new owners and a new philosophy have altered this tiny restaurant and I believe it's an improvement. My party ordered entirely from the extensive tapas section of the menu and every dish was perfection. Some favorites of the table were the calamari, the mushroom and bacon, the sausage with fig sauce (chosen as best sauce by the table), bacon wrapped shrimp, asparagus salad, stuffed peppers. Really, everything we ordered was fantastic. We were celebrating a birthday. I won't give away what they do for birthdays but I will say that it is something I've never seen before at any restaurant anywhere. The tiramisu is exceptional. Eight people dined, 4 bottles opened, and with tip included, the bill split seven ways (to pay for the birthday girl) we each only paid $43. I thought that was more than reasonable. Corkage $12.

    This is another one of my family's "celebration restaurants", and it truly is fabulous. We have ordered off of both the tapas menu and the entrees. As far as the appetizers go, both mushrooms, both shrimp (but especially the red pepper ones), and the mussels are all excellent. The croquettes and the meat and cheese plate are not as good as they sound on the menu,but not bad. The sausage is nothing spectacular, but good for any less adventurous eaters in your group. Both of the non-asparagus salads are delicious. As a non-asparagus fan I can't help you with that one. Overall, I'd rather order off of the tapas menu and skip the entrees, but I can comment on those, too. The sea bass has been hit-and-miss-- it alternates between being spectacular and having a fishy taste. The lamb shank and the beef tenderloin are both great, though. If somehow you still have room in your stomach after this, try the chocolate mousse for dessert. It's some of the best I've had. And I like chocolate mousse as much as I don't like asparagus. I'd say this is a five star establishment, but I had to take one off for a combination of being super expensive and sometimes very loud due to the small size. If you're in the mood to splurge, though, definitely give it a try. And save a couple of dollars by just ordering tapas.

    Disappointing Valentine's evening 2013. Our main server was very intrusive and came to the table to clear plates before we finished etc... I had a City Weekly coupon that they (Todd, one of the owners)erroneously denied and made me feel like I was trying to steal from them!!! This caused me so much stress and grief that I was in tears. After the horrible evening the only thing they did to "make things right" was honor the coupon, 5 days later! WE LOVE JC, but unfortunately his jovial loving personality is not enough to bring us back. And at the end of the day he WAS the reason we went there, as the food is just ok, and the prices high for what you get.

    We found our new favorite restaurant near us in Holladay, right off Highland Drive. The building was built and designed for the restaurant and designed perfectly - keeping the restaurant intimate. The service is fantastic - albeit it was very slow when we were there. But keep in mind that this is a dining experience - not just a quick dinner. Relax and enjoy! The tapas are amazing. We had the seafood stuffed pimiento peppers. Our waiter strongly recommended coming here to just do tapas - order 4 or 5 instead of entrees. They pair them perfectly. But we opted to go witht he entrees which looked fantastic. We had the tenderloin with rocquefort cheese sauce and the best chicken marsala I've ever had. But as good as these two plates were, I have been told that the sea bass dish was rated by Bon Appetit magazine as one of the best dishes in America - and the lamb shank may be the best thing on their menu. A definite must.

    This night was definitely full of hit-and-miss. We went straight tapas. The sardines on toasted baguettes were great. And while the clams and mussels were amazing, some of the other items were average at best to downright poor. The paella was quite dry and the sausage tasted literally like a hot dog, and a crappy one at that. We did get there quite late in the evening, and the place was deserted and close to closing. Don't know if that had anything to do with it. But for the price (and based on the hype), I expected more. Perhaps they had an off-night.

    Love their tapas! Haven't tried the entree options yet. Highly recommend the sausage in fig sauce, the red pepper garlic shrimp and any of the asparagus salads! I also have tried the garlic mushrooms which complemented the salad, but weren't great on their own and wasn't a must w/ the salad so won't get that again. The seafood with noodles and saffron sauce was good, but it didn't go well with much. Also the tuna on toasted baguette was great, but I'd rather order something I can't make at home. Beautiful atmosphere and amazing job the owners did on designing the new building. Friendly staff.

    Tried the new location last night, no reservations needed but not the best table in the house. Servers are on top of it here, great service even when i returned my very bland salmon that was in cold sauce, disappointed. We started with calamari, and nothing fabulous and the sauce was literally like mayo and bland. At least the bottle of wine was going down smooth. My friend ordered the tenderloin which I ended up with, was very rich but good, nothing mind blowing. You could drench a old shoe in the heavy cheese sauce and made it appealing. All in all, food was very disappointing but the atmosphere and service was top notch. I will give it another try but very disappointed. I kinda like the old spot better, very intimate and food seemed to have more love but with growth, quality goes down i guess.

    What a discovery! My wife and I received as warm a welcome here as we've received anywhere. The atmosphere is wonderful, and if it didn't quite transport us to Spain, at least it got us out of Utah! We arrived late on a Saturday night (we felt so European!) around 8:30 and were promptly seated by our host JC Pino (brother of owner Gabrielle McAfee). Nice flamenco music was playing overhead, and there were a scattered number of tables enjoying their drinks and food around us. Though we have had tapas all across the country (including Jose Andres' Jaleo in D.C.), JC explained his philosophy on how to enjoy the experience best by lingering, and allowing the flavors of the food and drink to intermingle. He had very strong ideas about what items went best together so we put ourselves in his capable hands. He even arranged for a pause between the first and second pair of dishes! My wife had a glass of white and I had a glass of rioja. It didn't do much for me until I had our first dish, Pimientos del Piquillo Rellenos de Pescado. We were presented with four little imported Piquillo peppers stuffed with a somewhat dry and tasteless fish mixture, but swimming in a wonderful peppery tomato sauce which was perfectly accented by my wine. At the same time, we also had the spinach Croquetas, nicely crisp and golden brown on the outside, but betrayed by a bechamel inside that wasn't very creamy, and was still cold (was it previously frozen?). Nevertheless, they were very tasty when dipped in the tomato sauce from the peppers. We then had our pause and we reflected on our first two dishes. They were good, but we wish we had more than our one roll each to dip into the sauce! It would have been nice to be given more bread rather than having to ask for it all the time. In any case, we then had the Butifarritas con Brevas, an imported grilled Spanish sausage in a sweet fig sauce paired with the Gambas con Bacon, shrimp wrapped in bacon covered with a cream sauce. The sausage was quite tasty, and it's salt and smoke flavors were nicely countered by the tart and sweet fig sauce. The shrimp were also tasty, though it violated one of my pet peeves (wrapping food in bacon then not fully cooking or crisping the bacon!). The shrimp were perfectly done, but the bacon was still soft and limp with no color (or flavor). I think you could serve anything in a cream sauce (with butter and cheese) and it would be delicious. Our favorite standard tapas dish is Gambas al ajillo (shimp with garlic and chili flakes) but unfortunately, they do not serve this. The closest they have is Cazuela de Pimientos del Piquillo con Gambas al Ajillo, a casserole of sorts with Piquillo peppers. But since we were already having the other Piquillo pepper dish, JC would not let us order this! Overall then, why four stars? The food was only mediocre and very expensive (this meal, which would not have satisfied if we were at all hungry, ran $80), but the atmosphere, setting, and service were exemplary! Even with its shortcomings, we are looking forward to returning with guests!

    I would have given them a higher rating if the service wasn't soooo slow....food is tasty and they have pretty good wine selection but I guess the owner is a strong believer in dining with a laid back Spanish experience(at least he kept on repeating that with us). I've been to Spain before and I don't remember slow dining experience but be prepared to spend at least couple of hours for dinner. I do have to give them credit because we were a large group and they were able to accommodate us and gave us free sliced jamon appetizers....Not really a place for family with kids but it could be a nice romantic date place because of its charming decor.

    Loved it! For some true, authentic Spanish food call a day ahead to order a Spanish tortilla tapa. Then for your meal you can't go wrong with a paella. The Brie salad was also delicious. Great ambiance and service!

    How can anyone justify eating here? In all fairness, the building is lovely on the outside, and the waitstaff is very, very nice, but after this, that is all. The decoration is horrible inside- plastic flowers and all -and the food was so not good AND so not worth it. We ordered the calamari and it was SO over-salted that we sent it back. Then we received it with NO seasoning whatsoever and it was so bland. The sauce was a SALTED mayo concoction that would never be found in Spain. (Probably a play-off of fry sauce for the Utahn's that have never left the state!) Then the owner (whose picture was next to us and way out of focus) stated, "In 10 years I have never had anyone complain about the calamari." Well, in 10 years you have obviously never listened to your guests! What arrogance! Finally, prices were very high and quantity was decidedly lacking. The salad we had was almost without dressing, so it was like eating dry leaves. Find somewhere else to spend your money in Salt Lake - there are plenty of better restaurants that serve Tapas in town. This place doesn't deserve even one star! The waitstaff, however, deserves 6 stars to make up for the ignorance of the owner!

    Food = Good Service = Excellent Value = Poor Portions needs to be upped or prices lowered. And yes I know we are talking about Tapas here. One of the plates we got was the Scallop special for $14. It was good however it was 2 medium sized scallops cut in half. $7 a scallop you have to be kidding. The sausage in fig sauce was good also but the portion was very small.

    Had reservations for a business dinner for 7:30 pm, but were not seated until almost 9. No aologies or even acknowledgment that we were all waiting, in fact the manager seemed annoyed that we were standing around in the lobby although there was no other place to go. No apologies, no offer of a glass of wine, nothing, even after we spoke to him repeatedly inquiring as to the reason for the delay. Once seated, service was fairly efficient. Food was adequate but not outstanding, probably not good enough to justify their prices. Manager offered us a $25 gift certificate as compensation; total bill for our party was over $600. Main problem here was poor management, and we were put off by the manager's indifference and bad breath. The gift certificate was never used as none of our group was interested in a return visit. Even if there had been no wait and perfect scheduling, doubt any of us would return anyway as the meal was generally uninspired.

    Dined at the new location with seven girls a few nights ago. The food was fabulous! We ended up sharing a few apps and three entrees. The favorites were: app special "fried cheese w/ green olives" and the spinach croquettes, we also loved the asparagus salad. For entrees, we had the grilled beef tenderloin, sea bass and chicken marsala. The favorite of the three was the chicken marsala! I will be trying to recreate that sauce at home! The "meat eaters" loved the beef (blue cheese cream sauce). Good service and great food. Wish it was closer to downtown SLC, but its worth the drive.

    Foodgasm... We went all tapas with the paella, the seafood stuffed piquillo peppers, and the baby eels (angulas) in a crushed red pepper sauce (Paella and angulas were on the tapas menu as specials). All three were close your eyes and make pleasure noises good. The eels stole the show. The portions are bigger than you would think for tapas making the prices pretty fair. Great un-intimidating but upscale ambiance. Service was awesome. Must go back and explore the rest of the menu.

    Cafe Madrid has a fantastic atmosphere, especially if you're lucky enough to enjoy the patio in the summertime - which is what I did. I had the Esparragos Trigueros al Ali-oli: fresh green asparagus, grilled and served on a bed of sliced white potatoes and finished with a garlic cream sauce. It was tasty enough, but how can you mess that up? I was mostly excited for the dessert, and it did not disappoint. I had a dark chocolate mousse with mandarin orange foam on top. It was amazing. I'm not really even that big of a chocolate fan, but it was delicious. I wish they listed their desserts on the menu online, but perhaps they rotate them out seasonally. I've also heard that they have a great tiramisu. Be prepared to spend some dough, though. Just saying.

    I have friends who swear by this place but I've tried it 3-4 times and have never been impressed. The duck is overcooked, the cheese plate is tiny for the price, the service is either absent or overly involved with suggestions. I can't say if this is authentic Spanish cuisine. All I can say is it is not worth the price. I don't have a problem with expensive restaurants but my expectations increase with the cost of my meal.

    Just dined here yesterday. It was blustery day with Storm clowds rolling in. We booked an outside reservation, but after the first couple of drops opted to play it safe inside. This is the second time I've dined here. The food was 4 star worthy, the service closer to a 3. I think there was only one waiter for the whole restaurant so it was a little slow, but we didn't mind cause we were catching up with old friends. Tapas are good, wine selection is fun. All in all a good time.

    This little gem brings European style service to Salt Lake City. Honestly just exquisite. Took my kids to dinner, was entranced with the flavors and the helpfulness of the entire staff. Surprisingly, very good value for the $$ - we were too full for dessert, which is a shame because their desserts looked divine. Will definitely go back, and often.

    One of our favorite Salt Lake restaurants. The food, ambiance, and service are all outstanding. We have tried most items on their menu and have never been disappointed. Some of our most memorable Salt Lake dining experiences have been at Cafe Madrid -- highly recommended!

    This is where I had the best fillet of my life (and I've eaten at some really great steak houses). The fillet was so tender you could have cut it with a spoon. It is served with Roquefort cheese sauce...Roquefort cheese sauce! It was inspiring. I am not a steak eater, or even really a beef eater. But this might have been one of the most delicious meals I've ever had.

    It really wasn't what I expected. I have lived in Spain and went here expecting authentic.The paella was too dry with a low quantity of seaood (it seemed more like Mexican rice). The ham plater was more like a dish that wasn't accompanied by bread!!! the worst would deffinitlly be the sangria which cost $20.00 for the garrafa and was mostly sprite and juice with bairly any wine. Our waiter felt so bad he brought a glass of wine to add on to the sangria for more flavor. We were a party of two and spend $100 on a few tapas, definitly over priced for what it is. However, within the positive I must say the service was amazing!!! great staff!

    The chef here is obviously very, very good. The sauces on my food were top notch. That said, I got the duck and it was tough and overcooked so there is some inconsistency going on here. Whoever's doing the cooking is obviously very capable but I am not sure they work up to their potential every single night.
