Ps, the service sucks. Go for the food, not the service.

Don't expect more from an AYCE place. The nigiri isn't fresh and they use way too much rice for their sushi. I understand that they don't want to waste fish but it's not about quantity, as it is quality which here is very poor. The one roll I found average at best ( out of 7 rolls my friend and I ordered) was the Rocky Mountain roll. You can tell the fish isn't as fresh as other places like Takashi and Naked fish, but like I said you're paying for average sushi. The cream cheese also taste stale which makes the sushi overall even worse. I wouldn't recommend coming here . Pay a little more for better quality.

This is the best Sushi in town. I've eaten there for a few years it's always very fresh inexpensive and delicious. You must try for yourself.

My husband, my son and I went there to try it out for once because we normally go to Koi. Well at first their greetings was very friendly... we order few sushi and they did not have any flavor and the veg. could taste old. I had teriyaki chicken with rice, it came with soup and salad. The soup taste flat and the salad was okay. The teriyaki chicken was a little dry, my son did not even like the chicken either... The services stink they did not check on us to see if we need anything, I was waiting for more drink and ask for more napkins...All I could see them chatting in front desk and checking on the computer while the others working their butt off. After waiting about 15 min, the girl came to pick up the dishes it was when I got their attention and asked for more drink. We made a big mistake coming to this place, we will not come back... I would rather go next door "Koi", they do good services and their foods are better, sushi is very freash and taste so much better.

*NEW UPDATE* The service has improved and the sushi doesn't fall apart like it did when service dipped for a while. They're back to their tasty selves, and I'm happy to say so because this place has always had a soft spot in my heart. Welcome back, Sushi Ya.

From the time we sat down things got weird. The waitress brought over a pile of menus, chopsticks and DIY sushi ordering menus. At Sushi Ya you're expected to write everything down yourself and hand it to the waitress to take to the back room to be prepped. There is a sushi prep station in the dining room, but for some reason everything was prepared in the back. When the sushi was presented it looked like it had been prepared the day before. I ordered the Rainbow Roll. Funny thing is, I don't recall ever seeing the color brown in the rainbow. It certainly didn't look fresh, and smelled extra fishy. The waitress explained it was brown because it was close to the fish's stomach. Seriously. She said that. Then, she never offered to have it remade or taken off the check. The best part of my visit was the overpriced, but very cold Sapporo. I'd avoid this one. Ok... 30 minutes later my stomach feels sick. Stay away.

Such a good place. It's clean, the staff is very nice, and the food is really good. You get what you pay for, good prices for great food. I like that they have an all you can eat option (even though I usually can't eat that much) a little slice of sushi heaven.

I went there with my cousin who was in town and was looking for all you can eat sushi. This is the only place in the area that we could find so we tried it. I will never go back again. The amount of rice used on the rolls and nigiri is outrageous. They are obviously trying to fill people up on cheap rice so that they can save some money. That being said, the fish was nothing to fawn over either. It was all very fishy and not good at all. I will definitely never be going back.

Great place to meet friends and have some good sushi.....

We have given this place more than a fair chance (twice for lunch and at least four dinners), but after today's lunch I think we'll just call it quits. Even from our first visit, the service was inexcusably sub-par. Some reviewers have said it was better initially, but our first time there was within their first 6 months open, the place was virtually empty on a weeknight and we still felt like we were an imposition on our waiter. Our waitress today had only one other table to attend to and we still had to go retrieve her for drink refills and remind her to bring us ginger as well as what our orders were. For their price of all-you-can-eat sushi, however, we always figured it was worth the risk of having another fairly poor service experience. Our mistake. What made today the last straw was the fact that we had to wait nearly twenty minutes for just our first two rolls and eight pieces of nigiri to arrive (the restaurant was a little less than half full). The next round took nearly as long, but at least we put a little more on that round since it was obvious by then that we were facing yet another one of those poor service days. The kitchen being slow one day or the wait staff being slow on another is one thing, but when both are regularly neglectful we refuse to continue rewarding poor business practices. The sushi itself is, of course, what first drew us in and what also now has us saying farewell. Our Godzilla roll was almost all rice inside with a minuscule cube of fish that had a very "fishy" taste; shockingly strong for how little there was. The salmon in today's Rainbow roll had tough, chewy blocks of fat that had to be deposited in napkins - sorry, I know that's gross. This place could certainly turn it around, but until I see these reviews take that turn to show they've seen the error of their ways, we are done with the Layton/Clearfield Sushi Ya and definitely don't recommend it to anyone as it is.

All you can eat sushi for under $20! Sign me up. Although I took the alternative route and only ordered the veggie rolls.... the other 3 people in the group opted to go all out and feast on as much as they could. Sadly to say, only after one order(7 rolls) they gave in. I cant speak for their rolls, but the veggie selection was minimal yet tasted oh so right. We shall return again....and go all out. Service was excellent. Atmosphere was casual....enjoyable.

Premise: all-you-can-eat sushi is as good an idea as cut-rate eye surgery. Evidence: Sushi Ya I've not seen such flaccid, uninspiring tubular victual drenched in sticky, cloying sauce since [insert your own joke here]. We had several of the signature rolls such as the Godzilla and Jason. What looked like a crime-punching league of superheroes on the menu turned out to be a rogues' gallery of food that was clearly made by somebody who was overworked and just didn't care. Rolls were coming apart at the seams, spilling contents all over the cheap plastic plates they were served on. Somebody somewhere along the way told the chef that his unagi sauce was particularly good. That person should be flogged, as it now makes an appearance on dishes that don't mention it on the menu as an element. We tried some non-signature rolls as well and they were no better. It would be worth skipping your sushi cravings three times and going to Takashi instead or, alternately, spending about the same money and going to Sushi Express.

I am giving this place three stars because it used to be our favorite sushi place, but I agree with the other recent reviews. The quality, cleanliness, and service has dropped so badly. Brought in guests for their first visit and their first impression was a stinky, filthy koi pond in need of serious tlc. Sat down and noticed the chairs and floor were covered in dried up food spills. Had to wipe gunk of seat to sit. Went to use restroom and it was absolutely gross. My biggest complaint was that there were so few staff and a restaurant FULL of people. We ordered, food took forever, part of order was missing, no one ever came back - we ended up having to go ask to pay so we could leave. You can't order all you can eat sushi if no one comes back to your table. While leaving we passed two other parties leaving because no one came to their table or they never got food after almost an hour?? I really like the owner and hope they get it together and are worth visiting again. I am wondering if it is just an issue with service on Friday and Saturday nights. All the other times we've gone it was a weekday. This place was one of the best and I hope it is again.

Food was good but the service was almost non existent
(3)Tera C.
Service was inattentive, sushi was falling apart, table and surroundings were dirty. I probably will not be back.

I don't know what happened to this place but they need to do something about it to turn it around. I honestly, thought it was okay when they first opened. The only good thing about it is that they do have an 'All you can Eat' deal for $20. The presentation is just a sad & messy sight for sore eyes. Far from being authentic, because REAL Japanese food have a visual appeal to it; I understand it is a buffet like atmosphere but the sushi shouldn't just crumble when barely touching it with your chopsticks. And the staff... PLEASE SMILE A LITTLE MORE! Everybody looks so damn pissed all the damn time! I refuse to let this restaurant spoil my search for great japanese/ sushi restaurants in UTAH especially in the Davis/Weber county.
(1)Matt B.
For an all-you-can-eat sushi joint, this place is great. It has good sushi, and the staff is very nice and accommodating. If you like a roll that isn't on the menu, they are willing to make it. They also have a large selection of specialty rolls. This isn't the first, nor the last time we will enjoy Sushi Ya.

My husband's 4 favorite words are all you can eat so when I noticed this place last week I thought we had to try it and I'm so glad we did. We went at 3pm on Sat afternoon and there were several other groups there. I thought that was a good sign. They have a great selection of at least 30 different rolls and about 15 types of nigiri. We loved everything we tried! The Las Vegas roll was our favorite; crab, salmon, avacado, ??, tempura dipped, served with eel sauce. It was amazing and I find myself craving it now. You don't have to decide on all you can eat right up front. Just order what you'd like and when you've reached the point where you've paid the all you can price they tell you that you can order anything more you want and you won't pay anything extra. If you stop before that point you just pay for what you've ordered.
(5)Bethany R.
I love Sushi Ya! I have never been disappointed in the rolls we ordered! They have all been fresh and flavorful. You just can't beat the price! $20 for all you can eat sushi! I easily spend over $40 for one person at other places for the same quality and far less sushi! Yes, the service is extremely slow...but think about it. It's a tactic! They want your food to settle so you get full faster. Notice how fast and often they refill the drinks? Anywhoooo... It's good. It's worth it.

Buckle in, kids; this may be a long one. I started today by planning on a lunch in Logan, which didn't work out, so I then thought of a couple places in Ogden, one of which I actually went to, but turned out to be something other than what I had in mind, so, remembering the sign along I-15 and thinking it had been a while since I had some Crystal Shrimp sushi and wanting to see if the "magic" of my visits in Orem held up over time or were just me with some rose-colored Decepticon-implanted memories, I hit this place up instead of Koi, which is in the same parking lot. Inside is fairly new and spacious. Beyond myself and servers, there was only one other table. Perfect. Now let's get us to hoggin' down on some sushi, yes? Well...sort of. The guy handed me this piece of paper and a menu, along with a pen. So I marked off what I wanted and then he explained how the pricing structure worked. By now, I had noticed their somewhat "heavy-handed" house rules, which are [Biblical phrasing mine -ed.] as follows: 1) Thou mustest finisheth all thy rice (or perish ye). [To be frank, the fish I had was not worth extracting from the rolls and would have made poor-at-best sashimi. -ed.] 2) Thou shalt NOT share, mortal!* * = unless another person also has AYCE. 3) Items are serveth as-iseth on thine menu. (This was false. I modified.) 4) Additional FEES will be leveled against thy head for wastething. [No idea what those were and though I was tempted to find out, I forgot by the end. -ed.] 5) We reserve the right for all restrictions. [Apparently, it's all they decide you are going to eat, rather than all you CAN eat. -ed.] 6) No take-out containers for AYCE orders. Now, I have some reservations about this sort of Draconian nonsense about wasting food. In my mind, the restaurant and I are making a pact. I'm spending money and buying items and they are giving them to me and after that they are mine and I can stuff them in my trousers if I want. This place seems to be more saying, "hey guy shoving sushi down your pants over there, someone has to serve this and it might be all you can eat, but it's not a buffet." The problem came up more than once during the course of this meal, as a couple rolls were dubious enough that I would have stopped eating them and rejected them in favor of something else, were I inclined for any sort of fight over their stupid policy. So, basically, they can just sling whatever tailings and other crap happen to be hanging around the kitchen and expect patrons to pay for it. Nice scam. Right, whatever. So after a misstep with ordering (I wound up with AYCE for $14.95), I got a couple nigiris and an initial 3 rolls, including the Crystal Shrimp. Kay has outlined most of what is wrong with this, but just to recap, my nigiri rice was actually dry. Of that initial order, none of that initial order, including the shrimp nigiri (!) was edible without a slice of ginger on top and a soy sauce bath, excepting the Crystal Shrimp roll, which was not anywhere near as awesome as I remembered it, but probably the best roll any of the cheap places does. It was by far the best thing I was served today, though they got a little crazy with the sweet sauce. I also ordered an additional crab (make mine, Krab, I guess), which was also somewhat nasty. Not as much as the Rainbow roll, which bordered on hideous. They also use extract to step on their spicy tuna, so word to the wise there. Rice was also a bit underdone on the rolls, but I've had worse. I finally got around to the green tea towards the end, the taste of which I shall describe as "foot-ish." Disgusting. As nice as the servers were and as much as I wanted to rate this higher, I cannot in good conscious give this more than the 2 stars I'm giving it. Of 4 rolls and 2 nigiri orders, I would order exactly one thing ever again (Crystal Shrimp, though they didn't do it near as well as Orem) and even though I was far from full, I threw in the sponge and gave up on ordering more rolls, as it just was not worth slogging through further.

Very disappointed. We came into town for the weekend to visit family and there was a sign on the restaraunt that read, "closed for the 4th and the 5th sorry for the inconvenience".

We tried this place on the recommendation of a friend who used to live here. We were extremely disappointed. Our waitress was very friendly, but couldn't make up for the crappy food. We ordered miso soup, which was sub par. It didn't even have tofu in it. We ordered albacore and got regular tuna. We still ate it, but only after lifting up the fish to remove some of the giant ball of rice underneath. My husband ordered upside down shrimp, which was a soupy mess and totally fell apart. He had to use his soup spoon to try to eat it. He had the same problem with his hand roll and finally just gave up. All the rolls were overly packed with extremely dry rice, particularly the King Kong, which looked like big dice with little pieces of fish in a sea of rice. None of the rolls were particularly good and even more disappointing, the rice wasn't even cooked properly. In every roll, we kept crunching down on pieces of rice with hard centers. This was a total waste of $40 for awful sushi for 2. We would not eat here again.

For a place up north, their sushi quality is actually quite decent when compared relatively with the sushi joints in the area. All of the "Sushi Ya"s were once owned by the same people, but apparently there was a split awhile back, and they are now operated by different owners. This location has a large dining area that can hold large group parties, and they have a nice bar area with a big screen TV in behind the chefs. Their rolls in general are decent even for regular restaurants and they are an all you can eat joint. I really like their spicy rolls such as Spicy Tuna, as the tuna inside is not just bit size like most places and I can request extra spicy on the sauces as well. Tuna and right level spiciness is like a dream come true... The Crystal Shrimp is a house favorite that I do not particular like sweetness in it. Their nigiris are not bad either for an all you can eat place. The rice is not particularly big, the fish is not too thin, and they might even be better than most regular sushi joints nearby. The fishes were definitely frozen quality though, but can't expect everything to be top notch. Compared to the other Sushi Ya I visited, particular the one in Sandy, it is almost day and night with the rare occasion of the Sandy being the nightmare. Pricewise is not too expensive for sushi for both lunch and dinner, as I recall spending almost twice as much at nearby sushi joint (that was named after a city in Japan) for poorer quality sushi. Definitely recommend this place over all sushi-related restaurants in this area.
(4)Shane Z.
I love sushi ya! They don't have the best quality but what do you expect for all you can eat? Great selection and really it is awesome food.m we come here a lot. I have gone to the places when you spend a lot more for less and I would prefer to come here. I love the snowball roll it is awesome! Come hungry!
(4)Jared B.
Sushi Ya has always been a great place to go for good All You Can Eat Sushi. While $20 may seem a little expensive, my friends and I usually eat almost double what that is worth in sushi. While it may not be out-of-this-world amazing quality sushi, I have never actually been disappointed in any of the rolls and that coupled with the great customer service, friendly staff, and fun environment definitely brings the group coming back regularly.
(4)Heimlich M.
Previously ate at the Sushi Ya in SLC and it was pretty good. This one however was bad. Really bad. The place wasn't that clean but it wasn't gross either. We were there with several friends and ordered multiple rolls to share. Most of the rolls were not good though there was one that was pretty tasty. Most were dry and the rice and fish didn't seem fresh at all. Some of the rolls had a really fishy taste (tasted like a river smells). that night everyone in our party, with the exception of two people, got sick with stomach problems, No reason to go here again.
(1)Fayellen H.
Sushi was par and priced reasonably. They don't have a liquor license yet so don't expect saki or beer with your sushi. Service sucked though. I won't be going back on my dime.
(2)Brittney C.
I went there a while back and it was okay :) not bad but not the best. The prices are great though and when it said all-u-can eat I took advantage. Service was crappy though it took them a long time to bring out our food.
(3)Baron Daniel C.
I think my review will be a little different. Me and my bf wen there for dinner. The price was $18 for all you can eat sushi, which is a little cheaper than in Salt Lake City. The sushi was really great, can't complain! My bf knows one of the sushi chefs so we mostly ate his creations which were delicious! I did have a hurricane roll off the menu, it was good too, but not as amazing as the chefs personal rolls. The service on the other hand.... the waitress only came once... when she seated us originally. I had to ask another waiter for a glass of water since we never came back. So I can't recommend the service. The sushi chef said that they had a high turn over so most of the people were recently highers, but that is no excuse for never returning to the table!
(3)Raxx H.
This place is a hit or miss! I've gone so many times because I pray that it will be a hit and mostly because my friends pick it. Their service full on sucks. If you go with a group of people expect to get your food at different times. I ended up getting my rolls 20 minutes before anyone else got their food. They put way too much rice in their rolls. The shrimp in my sushi was pretty tough and appeared to be old. The fish seemed old because it smelled fishy. They overly sauce your sushi with eel sauce or spicy mayo. It's $18.00 for all you can eat but I recommend spending an extra $3.00 and heading to Tony's for better service and food. They do have great parking.
(2)Neal M.
As another reviewer said, it.was pretty good when it first opened, but it has been downhill ever since. A group from work has gone there for lunch maybe once a month since it opened, but everything has declined so badly over the last 6 months... Especially the service! It's become impossible to get much more than a single order in during a normal lunch hour, maybe their way of saving money on all-you-can-eat. That plus the increased rice and decreased quality and consistency (why did that 2nd order Godzilla roll taste so different than the first?), has shrunk the group and the desire. Too bad, it was great start. Maybe the hungries from Hill AFB will keep them in business. Maybe.
(1)Alina W.
I have been here twice for all-you-can-eat sushi and my experience has been so so. The ingredients seem fresh but a lot of the rolls have bland flavors and they piled on the rice like crazy (you are required to eat all of the rice before you can get more rolls). Price was ok for all you can eat but prepare to have a lot of rice. Service was unsatisfactory but they seemed to only have two waiters for a huge dining room full of people.
(2)Adrienne K.
Bad service, bad sushi. If you enjoy lots of k-rab, cream cheese, and mayonnaise with no spice at all, this is the place for you. Hurricane roll described as "spicy crab with dynamite sauce" = krab in mayo with no spice topped with warm mayonnaise. Rocky mountain = chewy, over cooked, extremely fishy scallops. playboy roll was ok Rainbow roll = no idea, they didn't bother bringing it and the service was so incredibly slow and inattentive that I wasn't about to wait and find out. When I talked to an employee about the issues with our rolls his response was, "the rocky mountain is a favorite" and "oh yeah, the hurricane isn't actually spicy" Absolutely nothing was done to rectify the situation so I paid forty dollars for essentially one roll...we only ate the playboy. Will NEVER return to this restaurant. Looks like I'm driving to salt lake or Ogden from now on for good sushi.
(1)Jeremy B.
Meh, I'm not a big sushi eater by any means, (thats not to say that I dont like it!), but in my limited experience with Sushi restaurants in Utah, I've certainly had better.
(2)Holly D.
All I can say is not good. Fish tasted old. Worst sushi I have ever had.
(1)Carolynn S.
I ate here when they first opened and loved it. Great sushi rolls and great service. The older man (manager/owner?) was very friendly and the waiter with the mohawk was great. However I returned there this April and had the worst experience and we will not be returning. I noticed right off that they had a complete staff turn over. None of the same people were there and this may be the issue. We ordered our usual favorites, the deep fried sushi rolls. They arrived after waiting almost an hour and the batter was caked on the rolls. It was so thick on them that I couldn't taste the sushi under all the batter. The rolls were also oversized so you could barely fit them in your mouth and were put together very sloppy. I always order my sushi without the avocado due to allergies however this time Sushi Ya could not remove the avocado because they said their rolls are PREMADE!! Yes, PREMADE!! They must make them the day before or that morning and then stick them in their refrigerator. No wonder they are so disgusting! Then we made the mistake of ordering one more deep fried sushi roll. I have no idea why we did that. We waited 45 mins for ONE roll. Then the waitress put it on our table and it was literally dark brown and charred! GROSS! What waitress would put burnt food on your table?! I took one bite and all I could taste was charred batter. I called the waitress over to tell her and she says, "Oh." and takes the roll away. No apologies, no offer to bring another one, no price reduction on our bill, nothing. On top of the disgusting rolls, the service simply was not there. We had to ask to get a water refill on our glasses. The staff was not personable. They never smiled, never spoke to us, and could really care less that we were there. We won't be back.
