If you're looking for something fancy or top of the line then don't come here. This is a family owned restaurant that is (probably) in need of an upgrade but why change something that has been working for so long? Yes it's a little dusty but it reminds me of my grandmas old home and I like it! The food is great for the price and most of the time you end up with left overs! I love this place because each time I go I feel like I'm visiting my grandma's house where she's cooking me dinner and I just look around at all her stuff on the walls. Pro tip: ****be nice to the people and they'll be nice back!*** and if you need something then don't hesitate to get up and get it yourself, that's why they have everything out in the open anyways!

My review is limited to their breakfast. I have had a burger here but it was a few years ago and as I recall it was pretty good. We had the Henry taco - which is unbelievably huge. And a potato and chorizo taco with cheese - also very large. I wish I would have only ordered 1 taco. The price for the taco seemed to be a lot until you see how large they are. The hot sauce was good. The red was hotter than the green. Both were good. Their potatoes in the tacos are hash brown and not chunks of potato as you find in most of the San Antonio taco places. I actually prefer the hash browns. Their chorizo was pretty good, although I've had better. Overall 5 stars on quantity and 4 on quality.

I'm from Sacramento and am visiting my grand parents in San Antonio. They brought me to Grumpys and I was very impressed. The food was amazing with huge portions! The service by Dominique was so amazing. Volunteering to take pictures, offering the children fruit cups, and especially friendly and sweet! Best service I have had in quite sometime! Definately recommend!

I had to give this place another try because of their very delicious breakfasts! I love the Barbacoa plate! While we waited to be seated I noticed they had taken down a couple of decorations to clean easier, while still keeping their homely look. They seated us front row to the kitchen, bringing our plates out sooner! While we ordered, our server didn't know some of our plates on the menu even existed, having us point them out to her. This doesn't look good...but at least she got all of our orders right and was very attentive to us. So far this has been our best experience! We will be coming back for more of their deliciously large breakfasts in the near future! Next time I'll have to try the infamous Henry taco!

Extremely delicious, fantastic, and a cute atmosphere. We walked in and the greeter greet us as if we were old friends. The food was very delicious and you get a lot for your money !!! Let's just say I will be back....

Made a breakfast visit to this place. We had a short wait of 10 minutes or less to get seated. The wait staff was very quick and friendly. We had drinks on the table and orders taken within 5minutes of sitting down. Within 8mimutes our plates were already being delivered to the table. The portion sizes truly are HUGE. The kids breakfast plate was the only one that was of normal proportions, for an adult. I was only able to ate half of the chopped steak and heuvos rancheros I ordered. The food was typical Texas breakfast type stuff. Probably not a good fancy wow the tourist type place. We enjoyed the experience and will be back to try the lunch and dinner menus. This place really did remind me of breakfast at my Great Grandparents farm in the Valley. We'll be back to try the lunch and dinner menus.

Definitely get your money's worth! It's not on the menu, but if you arrive hungry, ask for the "Outrageous Burger"! They say it's a Mexican restaurant but it's much more than that. Good service too! You won't walk away hungry and if you do, grab a pie to go!

This is WAY MORE than a Mexican CAFE! The food here is delicious! Love the burgers and fries and homemade PIES!

This quaint little neighborhood restaurant is 5 minutes from our house. Every time someone comes to visit us, we take them to Grumpy's. We eat there a lot and are never disappointed. The staff is very friendly and service is good. Great Americana type food too. Check out the chicken fried steak. Yum.

This place is a nice small town type of restaurant with excellent staff, great food, and very large portions at a very reasonable price. The breakfast tacos are huge and one is enough for a meal. The omelettes are also large and tasty. A lot of regulars come here and gets very busy on Sundays so plan ahead.

Great for breakfast, huge portions. Friendly place with a lot of eclectic stuff to look at. I was more than full when I left. I will go back.

The servings are HUGE! We are regulars here usually taking our daughter every weekend for breakfast after her soccer games. Our daughter is 4 and she usually requests the same waitress... They are very friendly here making everyone feel welcome. My hubby and I are pretty big on customer service and that's the reason we keep coming back. They usually are pretty good about the orders coming out quickly, they keep our drinks refilled, and they make my daughter feel special. They have coloring books for the kiddos and a "toy chest" where they let the kids grab a toy after their meal. The price for the food is good too especially for the huge serving sizes they serve. I get super stuffed with a breakfast taco. It's so huge it doesn't even fit in my hands I have to cut it in half to be able to hold it. Usually I only eat about half or 3/4 of the taco and give my left overs to my husband who is always stuffed but can't leave food on the plate! Another plus which my husband points out all the time is all the lakers posters they have up! Definitely recommend this place for the food and atmosphere.

Very good food and HUGE portions. Kind of noisy but they had $3.99 Mimosas that helped drown out the noise. Right before they brought our food, the waitress had to stomp out the most ginormous cockroach I have ever seen that ran out from the kitchen. She had to stomp on it 3-4 times because it was bigger than her foot. Usually something like that would cause me to lose my appetite but I did not run out of there screaming. The Mimosa must have taken away my ability to feel horror.

I have been to this place several times for breakfast and it is a must try. Their midas are really good and the serving size is quite hefty. The traditional breakfast was also good. The homemade biscuits are enormous and are fluffy. The staff gives you the feeling that you are family or a close family friend. Customer service is real and down to earth. Make sure to ask for the garlic sauce. One of the lady's makes it herself and it is a must. It's not on the menu but since the first time we tried it we cannot go without. Did I mention the refried beans? Words cannot describe their perfection.

Been going to Grumpy's for several years. Always get great service, never had to wait long for a table, I get more food than I can eat, it tastes great, AND I NEVER HAVE TO ASK FOR A COFFEE REFILL, as my cup stays full! Decor is rustic and place is full of local flavor....so if your looking Ritz-Carlton setting, and going to be freaked about the rustic setting, DON'T GO THERE.

  • Bob R.

I try to have breakfast here every week and just celebrated my birthday at Grumpy's. My favorte breakfast taco is the migas which is exceptional! Warning: the tacos are a full meal. Keisha and the staff do a great job. Atmosphere is ecletic and strange but it grows on you.

  • Starre L.

I have no idea how this place has stayed open for so long, because they have the worst Mexican food in our area. I tried their breakfast tacos, which were bland and flavorless; just a big disappointment. This was a take-out order, and after specifically requesting plenty of salsa, none was sent home with me. The prices are high, too. There are many Tex-Mex cafes in our area that are excellent; there's just no reason to pay high prices for bad food.

  • Dawn N.

Always amazing! Tons of great home style food! Get the chicken fried steak! This is our second time here and we will definitely keep coming back. Bring your appetite because the portions are huge!

Grumpy's for sure. I left here feeling grumpier than ever! The worst worst worst restaurant experience I have ever had! Wait wasn't long maybe 10 minutes, so that was good. We got our table and greeted by our sever, really friendly and helpful on recommending things since this was our first and LAST visit. So now begins the issues, once were treated it took atleast 10 minutes to receive our drinks, and then another 15-20 minutes for her to take our order. Now where I really get mad.... In the time it took to finally get our food atleast 10 tables that were sat after us received their food and were in and out in no time. Still waiting for our food, 2 of the 4 dishes came out, 5 minutes later 1 more comes only to tell us that the 4th dish went to another table. The rushed the last dish, meaning throwing it on the hottest heat so it looks cooked on the outside but was bloody and cold on the inside. The last 2 dishes were not edible, asked for a comp, they took just the one meal off after I asked them too. Then comes the other 10-15 minute wait for the checks that still had to be discussed with the owner. When talking to the owner she asked me what I wanted and I said the meal comped and she laughed at me. First of all if it takes this long for food to come out and then be under cooked to begin with and your customers are extremely upset you would think they would appease the customer. I had to say straight out I am not paying for this when neither of us were even able to eat! Oh and by the time we actually left the entire restaurant had flipped a full rotation on the tables of not more. Good luck! Work on your customer service!

One of our favorite places to get cheeseburgers! They are so big that we share. There is a charge for an extra plate of $0.75. Annoying but still worth it. All the waitresses are good. Everything I've ever eaten at grumpys has always been good but cheeseburgers are still my favorite. Tonight we had onion rings instead of french fries. This was an up charge of $0.99 but really worth the cost! They were great!

  • Karen G.

Grumpy's is awesome. Generous servings of home style cooking. Everything is reasonably priced. Friendly staff and usually the wait is short given the church crowd on Sunday. The only negative for us is when we sit by the kitchen; it's old school so orders are being yelled out and the wait staff is yelling over eating patrons for communication. There is a room addition that is rather quiet and that's where we usually sit. We are regulars on Sunday and will continue to support our local small business!

Decent greasy spoon. My family meets here for breakfast regularly. Large portions. Hubby and I came here for steak one evening and it was good, but the baked potato was blah.

  • Jasmin R.

I came here with my family for breakfast and the food here is delicious! We are in for vacation and wanted to go to a mom and pop breakfast restaurant. We ordered the breakfast special which included 2 large pancakes, eggs, bacon, and hash browns all of which were yummy! Also, their biscuits are huge! The scenery is awesome! Christmas lights & customer pictures really give a sense of originality. This is my to go breakfast diner next time I'm in San Antonio!

The only reasons why I am not saying 5 of 5 is because of two things. 1. When we entered the greeting was "hello, how many... Ok well you can sit in the main room or the side room". 2. Then my wife and I decided to just go to the "side" room my wife grabbed a high chair while I carried my son. Not once did they tell her there were high chairs in the side room. Those are the only 2 negative notes. Now to the food. AMAZING! Really nothing left to say. My wife's taco was the size of the Texas panhandle. My son got 2 pancakes easily that could have feed 2 and I got S.O.S. some of the best I've ever had. The atmosphere is one of a kind. From the personal pictures everywhere to the colorings of the children that have visited. Will be back next time we are in the area for sure!

I've been wanting to try Grumpy's for some time now because of the reviews I've seen on Yelp. We finally went today, and my expectations were met. We were already familiar with the area from visiting the cute antique stores next door, so I can tell you the location is great and off the path, yet close enough if you're in the NE San Antonio area. Now the food...I ordered the bacon cheeseburger because that's what I passed a server holding on the way to our table. It was huge (thick and bigger than the bun), juicy, and delicious. I had their homemade curly chips on side (can't remember exactly what they called them) and they were freshly made and very good. My husband had the ribeye special. He said it was good, but was a little thinner-like a breakfast steak-but tasty. The waitresses were all very sweet and attentive. Waitresses other than ours stopped by to see if we needed anything, which we appreciated. The ambiance was very country and comfortably laid back. I hail from the Ozarks of MO, so this was what I had been missing. Next visit will definitely be for breakfast, and the country fried steak will be ordered. I saw a neighboring table's order and it looked great...and also HUGE. Everything is huge here.

Holy Guacamole! I love the breakfast tacos here. They're probably among my favorite in town for a couple reasons. First off, they're massive like if 2 free bird burritos had a breakfast baby, it would be a Grumpy's Henry Taco. Second off, they have awesome salsa verde which kicks it up a notch in the flavor and spice department. Although this place is called Grumpy's, don't fret, this place/staff does not employ rude theatrics like Dick's. Service is always good and normally, food comes out pretty quick. It's also a plus for me that this place is 5 minutes from Rolling Oaks Mall since the food court there is less than stellar. I wouldn't be able to speak to the lunch dishes but I've had my fair share of their breakfast plates and they've been moderately good. The Henry Taco, which consists of refried beans, bacon, egg, cheese and potatoes (if I'm not mistaken) is by far my favorite one. I'm a pretty big eater and I can only eat one comfortably b/c they give you VERY generous portions. Imagine 2 flour tortillas overlapping and spilling out with all of the aforementioned goods. If you're in the area and like hole-in-the-wall type of joints, give this one a try especially if you're a sucker for breakfast tacos like me.

If you like "funky" eateries, this is the place for you. Crowded, trashy, and huge piles of food at a reasonable price. Just a little too trashy for me... Soup watery, steak tough, salad stale, but how can you complain with such big portions and cheap prices?

  • Glen H.

To much foooood lol. I always leave here having eaten to much or go home with leftovers. Had the charbroiled pork chops with mashed potatoes this time. Real mashed potatoes with rich brown gravy. The vegetable of the day can be anything from fried okra, to sautéed zucchini. Good down home food and a lot of it. Usually pretty busy, be prepared to wait.

Well we had our mouth set for Mexican food since that was on the sign an it was awesome. The real food here are the burgers an chicken fried steak. They were awesome.

This is a great little throwback with nice staff and excellent fare. The breakfast tacos are amazing, as are the daily specials. Whatever you get, I doubt you will be disappointed.

I always ask for Pam when I am there! She is always on top of her game and always makes sure you get your food right away. Place is usually packed but it's well worth the wait! I always order the chicken salad sandwich with twisters! Delicious!!! Absolutely LOVE Pam!!!

Go hungry! This is not the place for a snack. All of the portions are "Texas-sized." I have never had breakfast here, but I have been to lunch here quite a bit. The burgers are the size of hubcaps and are awesome! I typically order the bean burger. It's not on the menu, but they will make it. Good stuff! House made chips are a good compliment to the burger. Enchiladas will get the job done too. Mexican food is above average, but I would stick to the Texas food - burgers, pork chops, chicken fried steak, etc... Homemade pies are better than Grandma's. If you clear your plate and have a piece of pie, do not drive for at least 2 hours. You will need to lie down for a bit.

i googled somewhere to eat near Natural Bridges cavers and Grumpy's showed up. All of the portions were enormous. The SOS was amazing!

  • Jordan R.

I wish I could give this maybe 3.5 stars. Nothing wrong with the place, quality food, just nothing amazing either. If you are going for the breakfast tacos, they are huge as many other people have said... however... they are not that amazing. They put their focus on making a giant taco and that is about it. They don't do papas rancheras or anything, they only have hash browns. The bacon they use is crumbled bits, not full pieces, The eggs are just scrambled eggs. The Henry is a taco in name and technicality only. It is a tortilla over flowing with ingredients, you need a plate and a fork to eat it. Don't even think about trying to get one of these to eat on the go. If you are into huge portions for a good price (really, the price/portion ratio is probably the best in town) this is the place for you. If you are looking for incredibly delicious, flavorful, wow your mouth food, well this wouldn't be my first choice. I don't know that I personally would go here again on my own volition, but I would certainly eat here again with friends etc. Nice place, just not my style.

Great food! My entire family devoured all their food to the complaints of our over stuffed belly! Busy place. Lots of action and a brief wait but worth it. We arrived at the tail end of breakfast so the wait wasn't bad. Service and food will bring us back when we're in the area.

Wow! I had no idea what I was missing by never eating here. My cycling club decided on breakfast here after our ride, or lack thereof due to the wind today. The breakfast tacos are HUGE. Seriously, you could use 2 more tortillas to pick up the ingredients that are falling out of the tacos. I decided todays special was a better option for me though. Ribeye and eggs. When I say Ribeye I mean half of a plate. I am always nervous ordering steak from a taco place, or a Chilis or Fridays, because it normally isnt a good quality steak and isnt cooked right. Not an issue here. It was perfectly cooked, tender and juicy. It is probably a top 10 steak and eggs ever for me. That is my opinion bdfore seeing the bill. It may have moved up to top 5 since it was only $10.99 for it! How awesome is that? Looking forward to getting back there soon.

  • John H.

A nice, crowded little place off the beaten path in Garden Ridge. The breakfast portions where HUGE so come hungry. Lots of local memorabilia on the walls and you'll see a regular crowd shuffle through. The is a lot of competition for great breakfast in the area, so the prices seem a little bit high and depending on your tastes, the food may come off as just average. But still worth checking out.

  • Brent L.

WOW! The food portions and quality here are AMAZING! We usually go here for breakfast, but their lunches are just as good. I have NEVER been disappointed by a meal we have had at Grumpy's. HUGE chicken fried steak, HUGE guacamole burgers, HUGE omelets, and HUGE menu selection. They really have something for everyone's pallet - Mexican food and American food. ===================================== PROS: FANTASTIC AND FRIENDLY STAFF! Prices are very reasonable. Food quality is OUTSTANDING! ===================================== CONS: The ONLY con I could come up with is the fact that the side room addition is a bit crowded for seating. Some of the tables near the door are too close together. But it's NOT a reason to keep you from going to GRUMPY'S! I LOVE this place!!!!

    (5)
  • Nicholas M.

THE BEAN BURGER IS AMAZING. Unfortunately it isnt on the menu anymore but they still make it. the queso was better before they changed it and they used to pour it all over the chips... it isnt bad now but it used to be amazing.

  • Luis B.

Great service, very friendly waitresses been there more than 10 times always been received with a huge smile, my favorite place to bring visit from out of town, plates are huge and delicious prices in my opinion are cheap comparing to what you get, steak and eggs by far the best item on the menu, tacos are huge keep the great work girls!!!

  • Jason S.

Way overrated, granted the tacos were large but nothing special. BUT I ordered food to go and they charged me 1.60 for a togo cup of water the full price of tea. I questioned this and received the worst reply ever. Considering my total order was over 10.00 bucks I wasnt being a cheapskate I just wanted water. I Wont be back

We Yelped and were led to Grumpy's. First note is the staff was initially grumpy but couldn't hold the character and served us pleasantly. The portions are enormous! The chicken fried steak was larger than the head of the person ordering it whom add a valiant attempt to eat half. All in all, all we ordered was good food and the prices reasonable.

  • Michelle C.

I really enjoyed this place. It is tucked away right off the main road and it has a nice small-town feel. I ordered the pecan pancakes with hashbrowns and bacon. It was VERY tasty!:) The portions are large so come hungry!

When I moved over to the Live Oak area, I found myself disliking a number of the breakfast options in my vicinity... A co-worker recently tipped me to Grumpies and have been there 3 times in the past 2 weeks. The place reminds me of a few greasy spoons I used to frequent in Redford, Michigan. The walls are adorned with various photos and fanatical affiliations to numerous sports teams. The place is frequented by regulars so don't be surprised if your waitress gets held up with numerous conversations at all of her tables. The place is incredibly personable and I think that's a good thing. The food is above par in my opinion and the portions are ridiculous. The place has 2 signature tacos that go by the name of "the henry" and "the skeeter". Both vary with what goes into them, but both are big enough to consider splitting between two people. I recommend staying to the specials of the day. I sampled my friends Pot Roast taco - which was filled with so much meat, we asked for two extra tortillas so that it could properly be eaten within a sitting. The best thing I've had there in all my visit has been the grilled pork chops.

We eat at Grumpy's fairly often. Huge portions. Never had bad food. Caution most of their breakfast entrees come covered with salsa so if you are not a salsa first thing in the morning beware! Burgers the best. Only complaint is everywhere you sit you have to fight off flies summer or winter. Odd hours so look before you go.

There is nothing I like better than kick-ass breakfast tacos. I've been to Grumpy's a few times with family members who apparently come here all the time (to the point where they are known by name). This little "hole in the wall" is great when it comes to food and service. In regards to my last visit, I had the barbacoa taco and the chorizo, potato and cheese breakfast taco. These were wonderful. In addition to tasting awesome, they were HUGE. One taco could easily be made into 2-3 tacos (just ask for some extra tortillas). I was so full. My favorite overall was the barbacoa since I've ordered it on each of my visits. As mentioned, we've always had great service. Ask for Naomi, she's the regular waitress who always waits on my family when they come by. Grumpy's might be in the middle of nowhere on the outskirts of the city, but if you're in the area, it's definitely worth a visit.

finally been to Grumpys for Breakfast LOVED IT biggest breakfast taco ever. I think it was the mayors taco all I know is it was loaded with flavor and huge. I ate on it for two days....

Remember the intro to The Flintstones - where they stop at the drive-thru and get the giant ribs that tip over thier car? That's what you'll feel like when they bring a chicken fried steak to your table at Grumpy's. This thing is not just large - it's comically large. And it's not just comically large, it's pretty darn delicious. I give them an above average rating on the quality of the steak itself but the perfectly fried, crispy batter just puts it way over the top. The cooks at Grumpy's are masters of the fry-o-later. Some of the best fried food I've had in a long time - the pickles are outstanding. Once I strayed and tried the enchilada plate. While they were passable .. and huge . . I really wished I had ordered something fried because, IMO, nobody does that better than Grumpy's.

Portions are huge but that's all. Not impressed with the taste nor service. Ordered the guacamole burger and had to scrape the guacamole off. It was that bad. "Where's the bacon?" My kids asked...it was sprinkled on lightly. Burger was dry and tasteless. Americans care about quantity over quality.

  • Marcia C.

Great breakfast tacos. Can't even finish one if I get the good hash browns too. Really big and stuffed full. If eggs Benedict are the special don't get them. Not their thing. My husband loves their pecan pancakes too.

We were heading out of town and needed a quick bite of breakfast. A Yelp search revealed this place as a top rated location. It was off the beaten path, but well worth the trip. The wait seemed like it would take forever, but we were in and out in no time. The food was great, service wasn't Grumpy at all, and the place had a great feel.

  • Kurt R.

We went here with HIGH hopes as the parking lot is always full and the reviews are good. I have no idea WHY unless it was free food! It was awful. Being the first time we asked the waitress what she thought was best and we took option 1 and 2 of her list, she should know best. It was bland and just BAD. Never go back. Out of the way place that is popular for some reason, it can't be the food...

    (1)
  • Bill R.

Tried their Mexican cuisine for lunch today. Lots of it, but hardly noteworthy. Ate about half of it then backed away, but, I took home another of their world famous apple pies and wowee, tonight I'm in pie heaven!!!! Go for the pie, settle for the rest. If quantity is your standard, you'll be happy. If quality is your standard, they get a C. Service always good, breakfast always good, and, of course, huge plate of chow.

Worth traveling long distances for! Yearly trip to Newks not complete without Grumpys! Delicious, huge portions. Breakfast taco, omelette, steak fingers....I really could name the whole menu. Go! Eat! Enjoy! Thanks Pam for the above and beyond service! See you next year(:

Been here three times now (and in the last two weeks...), twice for breakfast and once for a Friday night dinner. This place is SUPER! Great wait staff, friendly crowd and tremendous food. Chicken Fried Steak is about the size of a small throw rug and it's incredibly tender. The Guisada is spicy, tender and perfectly seasoned. By the way, order their Mimosas for breakfast or Margaritas.. they're relative in size to the Chicken Fried Steak. :) Friday night dinner was a blast... order his steak, nice amount of smoke, they will cook a steak rare for you carnivores out there and their grilled zucchini is out of this world. I recommend going for breakfast before 0900... it gets packed till 2:00pm afterwards. Same for dinner, arrive between 5:00 - 6:00pm and you'll get a seat right away. We've seen some of the negative reviews, but have never had a bad experience yet. Elayne is super, as are the rest of the staff! Will definitely bring out of town guests here also

We went to Grumpy's this morning for breakfast and we were pleasantly surprised. Although the building itself isn't terribly grand, this hole-in-the-wall place really delivers with tasty food. I ordered two breakfast tacos and both were great. The picadillo was a little more bland than I expected, but their refried beans were excellent. My wife and her mother both had a plate of pancakes, hash browns, eggs, and bacon. I sampled some of the hash browns and it was obvious that they were pretty good (and filling). I'll definitely go back.

Best place within 50 miles!! Consistent consistent consistent is the word for this establishment. The wait staff is beyond amazing. The food is made from scratch, ginormous servings and great tasting. The most I've been able to eat is a 1/3 of my plate. The prices are cheap compared to the serving and quality. I had the chicken and waffles this morning and I can honestly say the best in the San Antonio area!! If you haven't stopped by U are missing out!!

I ended up at this place because I had to take something to my bosses house ..it was lunch time and me and the family were hungry...I saw this place on the way in...and was like Mexican food in the country ...na, I rather try the BBQ across the street....well my boss said it was good, so I gave it a try...Nothing Grumpy about it, the staff was nice and friendly..I found it odd that they had a wide menu for a mexican resturant..they had everything!!I wasnt sure how the food was going be but It was yum, yum good..I have the cod and shrimp and I thought to my self again...how fresh was this going to be in the country...well it was fresh...even better than some of the seafood from resturants right on the beach!! My girl had chicken fried steak which was awsome!! And the kids been and cheese tacos...great food...nuff said...if your ever in this neck of the woods try it!!

Pretty darn good! Portions are massive and customer service is some of the best...all the girls are great! Love this spot! The service is wonderful! I would go here for breakfast before I would EVER go to IHOP/Denny's or any of those nasties. Love their cheese burgers it's my fav menu item. It's HUGE!

If you like out of the way, hole in the wall places to eat some country cooked good food, then Grumpy's will do it for you. I had about the greatest steak fingers this side of the Llano River. There was more than I could eat and the flavor was off the chain.

Another good restaurant to go eat. Chicken fried steak is big and tasty; though it costs about the same as Mama's Cafe. They also have enchiladas, hamburgers, fish, good things on the menu. I would come back!

Grumpy's is the BEST "Hole in the wall" joint in the San Antonio area. My wife and I have eaten at Grumpy's dozens of times over a five year period. We've had just about everything on their menu at one time or another. Their Breakfast Tacos are just OUTSTANDING. One will feed most normal folks all they can handle. Their other Breakfast items are just as good. I particularly like the "chopped" steak with eggs & hash-browns. My wife has a much lighter appetite so she generally chooses smaller portions, but NO MATTER what you choose you can't go wrong. The "Grumpy Burger" in one of it's forms (bacon, cheese, etc) is one of the biggest, juiciest burgers around. It compares well with the award winning burgers at other locations such as Chesters and Tip Top Cafe. Go to Grumpy's for Breakfast or just about any comfort food and you'll be pleased. Very informal, so 'ya'll come, ya hear!"

The food did not taste good (everything was processed) and there was way too much of it. . . gross. The place needs a real good cleaning. The staff was nice and there were plenty of customers, so it must appeal to some people.

This place is great! Homeade biscuits, mmmm. Everything that was coming out of the kitchen looked delish. Had the western omlete, hubby had the migas and we shared some menudo. Great friendly service. We will definetly be back to try some more breakfast, CFS and burgers! Just hate that they aren't open for dinner.

Best breakfast in the San Antonio area, just be prepared for a shack. My husband gets the steak and egg special every time and I get the ham and cheese omelette or a massive breakfast taco. Great coffee and homemade red salsa ....hot stuff, delicious.

Great hole in the wall place! But aren't those places the ones with best food?! We have only been there for breakfast on several occasions and each time is just as good as the first time. The portions are huge, so go hungry! Don't go there expecting the traditional restaurant. This is a converted house with blankets on the windows and the walls are covered with pictures or articles. Each time we go, there is wait, so they must be doing something right!

This place was terrible. Our family had received a $25.00 gift card to the establishment, but they ended up denying it as we paid for our food. And that's not the worst part. The atmosphere is really horrendous; you can still see the insulation in the walls which are covered merely by chicken wire, it's overly crowded, and the service there was quite slow. Moving on to the food, one of our family members purchased a puffy taco plate, which was basically a mound of lettuce shreds atop a few scanty pieces of meat and a really greasy puffy tortilla. Another order was a hamburger, which looked and tasted as if it had been bathed in grease. While I'm sure the breakfast tacos are wonderful there, others can agree that it's pretty hard to screw up a taco. Frankly put, we will not be going here again.

Oh lord! Praise this place for being the best breakfast serving joint in town! Huge portions, with very flavorful and colorful dishes. The staff greets you so happily in the morning and walls you through their extensive menu kindly. Try their migas plate, just simply awesome, beans, cheese, Hashbrowns, tons of veggies and egg with flour tortillas. The whole experience gets your day started in such a great way, two thumbs up for grumpys! :) must try

I'd give it 4.5 stars if I could because 4 seems too low, but I'll admit it isn't quite a 5! Ok first of all - you don't go to Grumpy's to get an egg white omelet and wheat toast with soy butter or whatever. Seriously. You go there for some dang good Breakfast Tacos. And the word taco is really the wrong word. Their tacos are some hybrid of an burrito filling, yet in a fajita taco shell. The tacos are less than $3.00 and have as much filling as a skillet, scramble or omelet! Order 2 and you are set for the day! (Our first visit we ordered 3 thinking they were Taco Cabana size tacos - BIG MISTAKE!) Grumpy is a great guy with a family run business. His family works there and the other wait staff has been there for years. It's in a old building, chicken wire keeping in the insulation, blankets over the windows, photos and newspaper articles decorate the walls, and the tables are Formica. But it feels like home and you are treated great. It's a perfect place for a Saturday or Sunday morning breakfast (try to beat the after church crowd, it gets busy!) The tacos are the best thing on the menu, and the best taco on the menu is the Henry taco - hashbrowns, bacon, eggs scrambled served in a flour tortilla with refried beans and cheese! For less than $3 it's a meal by it self! The chorizo and egg as well as the Migas tacos are also worth trying. The breakfast plates are also good, I've had the "Quickie" as well as the pancakes and was also happy. Biscuits and sausage gravy is also amazing - the biscuits are super fluffy and the gravy well-flavored. Our two least favorite things are the omelets and the chicken fried steak. We haven't tried them for lunch yet, but they do serve up a mean chili burger! Will have to update when we've tried that.

We tried this place for first time on Sunday based on positive Yelp reviews, but we were so disappointed. With a name like Grumpys, I wasn't expecting great Mexican food, but the sign did advertised it plus the rave taco reviews enticed me so i decided to ask if the tortillas were homemade and was disappointed that they are not. This is rare in San Antonio where even the fast food Mexican restaurants have semi-homemade tortillas. If you want quantity and not quality, then order the tacos. I did see other orders and they are HUGE. I ordered breakfast (eggs, bacon, hashbrowns and pecan pancakes). The bacon had a peculiar taste to it - I only had one slice because it just didnt taste right. The hashbrowns were the only good thing on my plate. I ordered the pecan pancakes, but received the walnut pancakes with 3 big walnut chunks in one pancake and had no flavor so I only ate a few bites of one. My husband had the pork chop breakfast plate. One porkchop was good while the other was rare. When he asked the waitress about the rare chop, she said that they have that problem on porkchop day and offered to put his half eaten rare chop back on the grill, that's when I really got grossed out- knowing that other customer's half eaten items were possibly being cooked on the same grill my food was cooked on. My son's beef fajitas had the texture of reheated or pre-cooked meat. He had two bites and set it aside. Thirty seven dollars later, We would have been better off going for fast food. The place was not the cleanest. We won't be returning.

I came here recently for some breakfast based on the great reviews. They food was great and the portions don't mess around. Trust me when I tell you two breakfast tacos are more than enough. The service was great. She was friendly and very attentive. What kept me from rating it higher was due to the high prices. 2.29 for a breakfast taco seemed a little high. Other than that Grumpys has some great food and a place I'll go back if I'm in the area.

Went there cuz of the reviewed ive read looking forward to thier migas plate....wow what a mistake. It was literaly slop on a plate! with bits of a spam like meat mixed in with the cheap velveta cheese. OMG I wouldnt eat there again. The service was slow, My husband ordered chicken fried steak which did take up his whole plate...I give this 2 stars cause he did say this food was so-so...portion sizes enough to feed 3 people! Wont be back..

WOW! Took my wife here yesterday for breakfast and I can say you better be hungry when you visit this place. I ordered the Chicken Fried Steak breakfast. It comes with an absolutely huge steak, eggs, hash browns and biscuits. My wife tried the Ham, Cheese and mushroom omelet and it was absolutely huge also. Older building, but clean and service was great. Would recommend to anyone who loves a great breakfast at an affordable price.

Hands down some of the best mexican food in the outskirts of san antonio. Grumpy's started as a small hole in the wall in its previous location across the street in the early 2000s. From an original capacity of about 20 people, the restaurant has grown to a two level restaurant and is always full of customers. Grumpy and his wife are well known in Schertz for their philanthropic efforts, enchiladas and famous breakfast tacos. Almost all of their tacos are under $2 and most people only need one to feel full. I always visit Grumpy's at least once when home for family visits and wait for the day when they open locations around the country.

Wonderful family owned restaurant away from the crowds. Easy access off 1604 and great service from staff. The Mexican food is great, but try their burgers, particularly the off-menu Cheesy-Weesy. Incredible burger with a huge amount of melted cheddar cheese covering the inside of the burger and flowing over it onto the plate. Also the chicken fried steak is among the best in San Antonio with great cream gravy.

Good food but I found the breakfast menu to be a bit pricey. Plates were $7 to $11. The tacos were a good value at about $2. After a 20% tip my son and I ate for $23. That included a adult plate with bacon and the kid's pancake plate. Staff is very friendly and service was quick.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
