    Food is good, not great. Prima Pasta, italian restaurant half a block down on Kirby, is far superior, for the money. On a very strict scale of 1 to 5 stars, on food quality for the price and inclusive of the part of town it's located in, I would rate Fred's average--a 3 star. Whenever I use a Groupon, I tip 15% of the meals non-discounted prices. However, the bill for a table of 2 with minimal waiter service requests demanded 18% of the non-discounted prices. I believe this is a deceptive business practice, so tipped 12%. Should have tipped 6%, because a tip is not mandatory, but their billing practice of requiring 18% is misleading. I can imagine visitors to Houston's Medical Center, which Fred's is close to, might also think this is normal practice in Houston, and reflect poorly of us by this deceptive practice. If a restaurant demands 18% tip (which I've rarely ever seen for a table of 2), it should be stated in the menu. Unethical practice.

    Hi everyone, I am Amir. I am a server at this place. Many of.you.proably.have seen me with beard that I.recently shaved off. I just noticed couple of reviews that seem kind of unfair and thought hearing my opinion would help.others judge about this.place . First off, you all know how servers make money. They, including me, get paid 2$ an hour plus tips they get. So if nobody tips, we will make like 2*160=320$ a month. Since the groupon's been up, we get a lot of customers with this coupon. We used to not add 18% grat to the checks and honestly we were making less than 10% of our sales on groupon tables as tip, that you know is supposed to be around 15-18%. People are usually supposed to tip according to original.price, not the discounted price but it is.not usually the case. On the other hand I saw a review stating that the restaurant adds grat to the check.to .make.up their loss due to groupon discounts. But we, servers, get the whole amount of service charge on our paycheck. I hope this.helps you understand the situation. I almost never add gratuity to regular orders of even big parties. But people who are happy with food and service and tip only 10% of the discounted price ARE NOT VERY FEW. Hope to see y'all back.there :)

    Had a great dinner here today. Great service and the lasagna was very tasty! Enjoyed the cheesecake I bought a groupon and it was a great deal. The house salad with Italian dressing was delicious as well.

    My Co workers and I decided to order here today. We placed 6 orders for delivery. They charged a 18% gratuity but called it a service charge. When we get the food we had no utensils or dressing for the salads. I ordered the lasagna taste was average but it was small and flattened drenched in marinara. Others got the Alfredo with chicken and shrimp. They said they couldn't finish their meal. When one of the girls tried to call they hung up on her stating he was too busy. I hate giving bad reviews but I felt the service was so sloppy and over priced. $13.99 for Alfredo shrimp, salad, and 2 small slices of bread. It wasn't worth it. Go somewhere else. Seriously!

    Ever since I found this place out back in 2004 I always have a spot in my heart for it. I love Italian food and to find a local place that is the right type of home cooked and welcoming for family, solo, and dates. The food is memorable and tasty, the employees are friendly, and the place is not big yet that is what adds to the charm. Also the best chicken vegetable soup and shrimp diablo I have ever consumed. You will not go wrong if you visit or bring others to experience this place and the food....yes I said place and food separately because they are experiences in their own right here.

    If there is negative star choice, I will give them 100. What a terrible experience! Service is rude, food is horrible and sticky. They also charge 18% service fee with out in advance notice! Will spread the words, and let my friends know.

    2.5 star. Over priced! Garlic bread is small portion taste like raw garlic. Lasagna and chicken parm was good. Sauce was sour. Minestrone soup was very disappointing, it only had two spoonfuls of ingredients the rest was just tomato soup. I wouldn't go again. I'm sure I'd have a better experience at Olive Garden. The waitress came sparingly and at the end they charged gratitude $8 without our consent.

    Just alright. The tomato basil soup is delicious. The crab cakes are nothing special. Chicken Alfredo is better anywhere else. Lasagna was small and the sausage was a link simply thrown in there instead of being ground italian sausage as I expected. Canoli was good. Crowded little restaurant. Our server was clearly inexperienced. Probably won't return.

    I live pretty close to Fred's, I had just got off work and it's open late so I decided to give it a try. The owner was really accommodating and nice, so was the wait staff. I ordered a saturday special, the chicken and shrimp Florence. The Caesar salad wasn't very good, the croutons were on the stale side. The pasta was cooked well and the Alfredo sauce was good. The chicken was cooked a little too long and was chewy. The shrimp could have been fresher. The total was 22$, I could have bought something way better for that price.

    Great little place with fabulous food. Nice owner & good service. Another place I found by using a Groupon & SOOOO glad I did. It was a great deal with the Groupon and still a good deal at regular price. The place quaint & clean, small enough to feel like home. We will be there again.

    This is one of the best hole-in-the-wall Italian places I've been to. I didn't know Holcombe has such a gem! The place is relatively small and the interior looks like any regular diner. But this placed is packed at dinner time especially on weekends. It is not very good for groups since the place is small. However, as far as Italian fare goes, the food is excellent. I went with my wife and daughter last Saturday for dinner, and the place was so busy. The waitress was very helpful and nice but the food took a while because of so many customers. We ordered the calamari, the spaghetti with meat sauce and the pork chop. The calamari was kind of overcooked and thus a little tough though. My daughter absolutely loved the pork chop! The spaghetti was divine as well. It came with salads, just as regular as any other salad, but the dressing was kind of original. I love this place, if not for being too popular. Come early and expect to wait during dinner time.

    Ordered delivery. We got chicken parm and baked ziti with meatballs. I was not impressed. Meatballs tasted frozen. Side salad wasn't bad though. Felt ripped off because they added gratuity and didn't tell me/didn't notice so I double tipped

    Great authentic Italian food! The Shrimp Diavla is not only flavor filled but it is the perfect dance between the sweetness from the tomatoes, herbs and spice. Great service! The owner welcomed us and made sure we enjoyed outer experience. And the desserts! The Canolli is heavenly!

    The food was wonderful and service was great. My mom and dad love their spaghetti and I loved what I got, it was a lunch special, penne pasta with grilled shrimp, it was amazing. They give you free bread which is always a plus for me, I love carbs! Staff was helpful and friendly. It's a little pricey but worth it. I want to try their weekend brunch!

    Last Saturday I was a first timer at this delightful little "corner" restraint! The ambience is quite cozy and has dim mood lighting, perfect for dates and that kind of stuff. The service was quick and fast, my family and I were immediately seated and within seconds handed a menu. We had a Groupon with us that was a very good deal. For four people we had fifteen dollars to spend each so I ordered a chicken cacciatore. The salad arrived in a jiffy and everyone was happily chowing in approximately seven minutes before the bread came and then we waited around ten minutes for the food. Very very pleased with the portion of the food and the quality of the chicken and sauce! The spaghetti was hearty and delicious and the chicken was firm and juicy, smothered in yummy maninara sauce and cheese as well as sprinkled with a light amount of Italian herbs. My dad ordered a lamb plate and was too happy with the great meal, the lamb and beef size was generous and according to him, the bread and sauce was out of this world! Mum ordered the shrimp pasta and she thoroughly enjoyed the meal as well. Lastly my sister ordered the Sicilian salad with shrimp and huge slices of fresh mozzarella, she loved her meal as well before she rushed back to rice university. The location was ideal for a family who wants to lunch witha rice university attending student asit was near and generally easy to reach. I felt a little bad for the man who was standing by the road, enduring the super cold wind that day so I tipped him a buck for recommending the restraint and you wouldn't believe his gratitude, it was extremely touching. Long story short, give this place a chance because it certainly won't disappoint!

    I read about this little family owner shop and decided to give it try. The chicken is not fresh and breaded but must have been bought pre-made frozen then spruced up with some sauce. Even the garlic was bought pre-made, not fresh. Common theme; pizza crust must be frozen. It actually could have been a dressed up Tombstome. Service was fine. Anyone whom gave this a high review has never ever had good Italian and I invite you to try LaGriglia or Mandola's.

    I went back to try their lunch with my coworker and everything was good (no groupon this time). I pre-ordered our lunch 15 min before arriving, which made dining smoother. We arrived, mentioned my name, paid, sat and our plates were brought out immediately! I ordered the alfredo linguine with shrimp. The pasta was clumped together as if it was boiled in not enough water. Other than that, it was pretty tasty. My coworker ordered an off menu item, alfredo linguine with mushrooms and italian sausage; really good. Our meal came with house salad and 3 pieces of bread which was plenty for us. The waiter was very attentive and friendly. I up'd the rating from my last visit because although service and food was good, i wasn't hit with the 18% gratuity for 2 people. I guess thats only during dinner service.

    The delivery options did not look that good for staying in the TMC area. The review of Andy's salad with shrimp sounded like the perfect healthy option. When I placed my order, they told me 45 minutes but I think they delivered it in 20 which was nice. Andy's salad was as described on the menu. I hate bleu cheese and forgot to ask them not to include it so I ding myself for that. The cheese was overpowering and I ended up not eating much of the salad. Shrimp were tail on. I am thankful I also ordered the eggplant parm. The eggplant was lightly breaded and it wasn't drowning in cheese or sauce - the eggplant, thinly sliced and layered was the star of the dish. It felt like a lighter version of eggplant parm than I have had before and it was hot, right out of the oven goodness. Bread was provided - it was ok.

    I ordered the chicken parm and my girl got cheese ravs with alfredo sauce. The salad that came with it was great. The bread was just normal french soft bread. The chicken parm itself was wonderful. The pasta with dice that comes with it had a different flavor. Not really bad just wasn't expecting that taste. My girl said her ravs were just great tasting. The spumoni ice cream was great. The tiramisu was not too bad. Pretty much the only problem I had was when I called. The gentleman that answered wad rude. He kept cutting me off and wouldn't listen. He said he could not hear me. So I hung up called back and asked if he could hear me? He said yes and then continued to not listen, cut me off and be ride. That's the problem I had that I want happy about. But they delivered to me and the food was good. I wish they had better bread or maybe oils or something for it when delivered. The last thing is I ordered strawberry lemonade and raspberry. They were great. So overall, the foods was very good. I would easy here again. I'm sure they have other wonderful things. I'm Italian/Sicilian and I've been to Italy. Although there sauce didn't taste like my grandmother's oany other in Italy it was good. The chicken was cooked well. They have good food but sadly they Haverstraw bad customer service. You shouldn't be so rude. I spent $60 for 2 people. You could at least be nice. The gentleman on the phone was not. So that's that. When I come back to Houston I'm anxious to try something different maybe. Not wanting to talk to anyone though. Hmmmmm take care. Lol

    I miss Fred & his chef's hat. His son is doing a good job keeping his legacy alive. I grew up going to this neighborhood institution. It has improved over the years. The included side salad is plain jane (I will admit) but the food is straightforward and prepared with genuine love. I particularly like the spaghetti and meatballs (always perfect) with a nice glass of red wine. The veal parmesan (as well as everything on the menu) is also reliable. The staff is always friendly and do their job. I usually go whenever I am feeling down. Fred's Italian Corner always buoys my spirits since it hasn't changed a bit (except for a minor facelift a few years ago). The food is delicious and simple. It isn't as cheap as I remember but well worth a visit for consistent homestyle Italian.

    We went for the first time for lunch on 03/07/2014. It was the absolute best chicken parmegeon I have ever eaten. The owner came by several times to check on us. He was very friendly. It was so good we went back later for dinner and it was great!

    I was in Houston recently and stayed in one of the hotels near the medical center area. Very few restaurants in the area deliver. After a long day traveling alone, i didn't feel like eating out and wasn't eating in the hotel bar two nights in a row. There are a few very upscale Italian places in this area - if you're looking for that, this isn't it. Fred's *does* deliver, and they had my garlic bread with mozzarella and Andy's salad with grilled shrimp (add on -recommended by another review) at my hotel lobby in 20 minutes. The shrimp were still warm, the salad excellent (bleu cheese crumbles with a balsamic vinaigrette, fresh veggies) and they also included some of the rolls mentioned in other reviews along with my cheesy garlic heaven. Definitely recommend this place for the food and good delivery service. If I'm in town again, I'll be checking out that chicken parm.

    The crab cakes with chipotle sauce is so delicious and filling I hardly had room for my fantastic pizza. Nice glass of Shiraz made this meal well worth it and I will return. The services was impeccable and the ambience is perfect for a quaint neighborhood favorite. Most people come here by word of mouth so I feel lucky today since I stumbled on this place all by myself!!     I have to give this one because my husbands entree was good, but everything else was pretty bad. We ordered the fried mozerella to share, my husband ordered the Chicken Parmesan, I ordered the Rizotto with Shrimp. We both ordered side Caesar salads. Apparently they were out of fried mozerella but didn't call to see if we'd like to cancel the order or substitute, so they just sent an order of their artichoke dip, which was bland and cold by the time it reached us. The salads were nothing to write home about. My husband loved his chicken parm, but my shrimp tasted weird and the rizotto could have used some salt, cheese, cream, ANYTHING to add some flavor or texture. I ended up getting a sick stomach later on, so the shrimp were bad. We won't be ordering from here again.

    We came here on a recommendation from our close friend who is an admitted food snob. I was told that the chicken parm was really good by the snob, and really I have not had an italian chicken dish that has compared. The chicken had a great crunch to it, but the meat was still incredibly tender. The sauce and pasta with it were amazing. I honestly can't fault this place for anything. The service was fantastic, the ambiance was great. If you want me to try to find a weakness... it is in an area that is not convenient for me, and since I rarely pass by there I don't get to go back as often as I would like.

    Not sure if it was an off day but had a pretty so so experience for dinner. Although there were only a few tables occupied, we were acknowledged 10 minutes after being seated. The dinner salad and dressing were good. However, we were quite disappointed to be informed that several items on the menu would not be available due to fryer being broken. We ended up getting spaghetti with meat sauce. The spaghetti itself was ok but the meat sauce seemed to be missing an important ingredient - the meat. It seemed to be pure tomato sauce. Not sure what happened here. On a positive note, the Italian Cream cake was very good. We also liked that we could bring a bottle of wine with us. Overall, this meal satisfied our hunger but was not as enjoyable as we would have liked it to be. We'll put this all down to a possible off day and will probably give this place another go. Every restaurant probably has an off day once in a while. I just hope that the management reads this and makes a couple of minor adjustments.

    I was in Houston last week and a friend of mine treated me to a great dining experience at Fred's Italian Corner. I decided to get the Osso Buco to complete my Italian experience. I was presented with a dish that was as fresh and as perfect as the one you can get in Milan's high scale restaurants. The pork shanks were cook to perfection and the garlic wasn't over powering. I had no idea that I could find this quality of food in Houston, but I was wrong. Fred's Italian Corner has left a great impression on me and I will look forward to dine there whenever I travel to Houston. Hopefully pretty soon.

    I was surprised to see Fred's only has 3 stars. We came here on a recommendation from a supremely picky friend. he suggested the Baked Ziti and Chicken Parm. I am a lover of baked ziti so I was excited. Adam ordered the parm. I liked the baked ziti a lot, but compared to the chicken parm...... the chicken parm was truly one of the best meals I have ever stolen bites from. I will most definitely order this when we go back, no doubt. Our waiter was great - friendly, promt, etc. we were tempted to order dessert, but didn't have room. I like the casual atmosphere. oh! and the bread was so good. and I forgot to mention how good their homemade salad dressing is. I think each entree comes with the salad and some bread. not too shabby if you ask me.

    I was in Houston with my parents while Mom was having surgery at a nearby hospital. My Dad and I were sick of hospital food and decided to venture out. After reading a few reviews on this place and making a drive by, we decided to stop in. We ordered an appetizer and glass of wine while waiting on our entres to go. The Italian sausage and pepper appetizer was amazing! I'm not a big fan of peppers, but I could have ate the entire thing myself. The staff was incredibly friendly. Not sure if we spoke with the gm or owner, but this Italian man was very welcoming. Upon leaving, he told us to visit again when mom gets out. Once we got back to where we were staying, we scarfed down our dinner. Dad had the Tuscan shrimp pasta which was, no surprise, amazing! I settled for a chicken and angel hair pasta with spinach and olive oil. I will definitely make a stop once I'm in town again.

    Good: gluten free menu Bad: gluten reaction after eating here.... Even without that experience, this would have been only 2 stars. My boyfriend upon leaving the restaurant: "Please tell me we never have to go back there." His baked ziti was absolutely blah. I had salmon which was tasty but nothing I couldn't have made at home. Came with potatoes (about six of them). In all, for our two meals plus a beer and a glass of wine, it cost 50 dollars, 30 after I used my Groupon (still felt like I paid too much at 30 - if it was full price, I would have felt robbed!) Plus we both left our leftovers at the restaurant. I never in my life have done that, so that is a pretty big statement. Ambience: At one point, kenny g was playing. That might be a draw to you. Not so much for me.

    Today, I went to the restaurant.I liked.I might be lucky after I read a couple of the bad reviews on Yelp.Anyway, I will explain why I like.At first, I put 2278 Holcombe Blvd Houston TX on google map.I followed the google's instruction.I couldn't find Fred.I called Fred.Someone was so patient with my Japanese accent English.Most people have some hard time to understand my English, but he was so patient that he could understand and said "We are located at a corner of Holcombe and Greenbriar.Later I found that I should have put 2278 "West" Holcombe.When you find Fred on the internet.Please don't forget to put "WEST" with Holcombe. I arrived there.I was a member of some group.I wanted to watch the 2012 European Champions League soccer final.They were pretty busy.But they tried to find the channel which broadcasts the game.They tried to live up to my expectations.We were a large group. They accepted separate checks.Some restaurants never accept the separate checks.I guess they are just lazy.I ordered some branch food.I am not a big fan of Italian food.Three persons came to me, they asked "Is everything Okay"" I saw strong team work spirits. Some servers are concerned about only tips and gratitude. About Fred, they really concerned about me. They helped each other and did their best in order to entertain our group. I didn't care about the foods.It was good.The most important thing is service.Sometimes, incompetent and greedy servers ruined a party. I and my friends were really having a great time at the restaurant ,today.Regarding soccer game, I found some of the restaurant employees were watching the game.After all, They just wanted to watch the game.The game might be more important than me.LOL!!

    Ordered delivery for dinner tonight. I've never had Fred's and won't order again. The best hing in my sack was the Diet Dr. Pepper I ordered :(. I ordered the chicken pesto pizza. Hardly any pesto and disappointing crust. Also ordered the tiramisu. It was a tiramsu pie. Very strange and not appealing. I had to add $2 to my order to qualify for delivery so I added a canoli which was completely inedible. What should be a light ricotta filling was super sweet frosting. Disgusting. Was hoping it would be delicious since it's close to my home and I love Italian food but for the price I'd have rather had a bowl of spagettios

    Came here several months ago with a Groupon. Couldn't believe, after all the years I've lived in Houston, that I had never tried Fred's, so I was happy to get to dine here. Suffice it to say, I very likely won't be back. The tables are arranged in long rows, so it feels like you're dining family style with everyone else in the restaurant. Cramped and obviously meant to pack 'em in. Waitress was not very friendly once she heard we had a groupon, and kept trying to upsell us. We each wanted a salad and an entree. No, we don't want appetizers, for the 10th time, and no, we don't want alcohol. Or dessert. No, really, we're full. Seriously, we get how delicious they are. Thanks, please. Can we just get our bill?

    I have been going to Fred's for lunch and dinner for years and thought they finally merit a review. First let me state if you like Italian home cooking, red sauce, courteous service Fred's is your place. One coveat lunch and dinner service and ambiance are night and day. There are huge lunch crowds from the Texas Medical Center and you have to place your order in line. It is very noisy although you do get served promptly. In the evening you feel like you are in an Italian trattoria. It is quiet, there is pleasant music the waiters are very attentive. You always get hot rolls and a nice house salad at Fredi's. Their prices are very reasonable. I love their eggplant parmagiana, the lasagna and the spaghetti Sicilian which is a heavy dish served with Italian Sausage and meatballs. Bring your appetite to Fred's!!!

    Favorite Italian in Houston! Great date place! My husband and I LOVE this restaurant. The service is always wonderful and we have tried 7-8 different dishes and they have all been great! Also love that it is BYO and we enjoy bringing our favorite wine, but they do have a few good bottles on their menu that are very reasonable. They also have a good selection of beer! Andy, the owner, is great to talk to and after becoming a member of the dining rewards program I really enjoy getting his e-mails each week. Very romantic and all plates are very reasonably priced!

    So my experience is just with their to-go orders. I was not happy because I was coming home from working out and decided to place an order so I could get it on my way back. I asked how long it would be and they said about 15 minutes. I came 20 minutes later and asked if my food was ready they said yes it should be coming right out. I decided to sit and wait for it. As I waited another table came in ordered and got their calamari before I got my to-go order that I placed 25 + minutes ago! So after waiting about 20 more minutes I finally got my order. I asked for SOME bread to go, I got 1 piece. Inside the decor is pretty classy, but they totally suck as far as their to-go orders are concerned. It felt like they literally didn't start on my order until I got there. I ordered the chicken picata. It wasn't that great. The chicken was 2 big pieces of chicken breast but there wasn't much flavor. The giant artichokes were yummy though. I would be ok with mediocre food and service if the price was cheaper but for 16 bucks I thought I was paying for quality.

    I like going there for lunch when I'm working in the medical center. I agree it is a little pricey , but there is something I like about the simple salad you get with your meal even though it is a little heavy on the iceberg. I really like the Italian dressing in the old school cruets (did they steal those from Church?) The bread is awesome - piping hot baguettes with Country Crock singles - hell yeah! The entrees are hit or miss. The lasagna with sausage is served with (get this) a whole link of Italian sausage on the side... kinda different as I assumed it would have been baked into the lasagna, but hey I'm not the chef here. The sauce was reminiscent of Chef Boyardee, but still not horrible. I had the chicken cannelloni once which was kind of dry but then another time enjoyed a really good shrimp penne pasta dish. The waiter has gotten to know me and really likes my company car for some reason (black Jeep Liberty ) Kinda weird, right? In fact today when I was there, I parked out of direct view from the front window and he says, "Hey where's your Jeep?" I pointed it out to him and he seemed relieved that I still had it. I think he wants to buy it from me one day... Okay, I'm through!

    I can understand bad rating because a restaurant has a bad night, and considering Fred's Italian has been open forever, they've probably had a few of them. But I was there on a great night and they went far beyond my expectations. I ordered the Chicken Parmesan and my date ordered the grilled chops. The wine by the glass was quite drinkable (where so many restaurants serve swill by the glass) so we started out well. The chops were impeccable, served with vegetables and the best mashed potatoes ever. My Chicken Parm was superb, breaded, sauteed, then baked to perfection with mozzarella cheese and a great marinara sauce. I had only eaten half, intending to save the other half for the next day but the waitress came back from the kitchen, saying the staff had thrown my savings away. In a period of about 10 minutes, the kitchen had created an entire DINNER for me to take home - plus a big helping of mashed potatoes. I'd give this a six star rating just for their efforts ~ and the extra take-home dinner was EXCELLENT as well. Bravo Fred's - I'll be back for more.

    I have been clicking back and forth between 3 and 4 stars trying to decide what rating Fred's deserves.... Imagine I clicked 3.5 Fred's is a tiny place crammed in a strip center. We were a group of 4 and the table was tiny considering that 4 people were going to eat on it. We ended up having to annex another table for the food! We brought our own wine since they are BYOB with a $6 corking fee. Food service was slow, but I think it was worth waiting for that food. It was fantastic. It bothers me that there is a garlic bread surcharge, so we stuck with the "house bread" aka dinner rolls. But they were hot so they were yummy! I ordered the Gnocchi with Pesto Cream. It was fantastic. Perfect density on the dumplings and the sauce was rich and creamy. Everyone at the table loved their food, and we were quickly stuffed. We shared a piece of tiramisu for dessert, it was heavenly. I agree with Albert that Fred's is weird. We joked that it was mob run or something... There was minimal decor and maximum seating, but the food was fantastic.

    Fred's is weird. It's an odd, cramped little space, with the tables arranged in long rows. It's as if you're dining at a banquet if the place is busy. Their food is Americanized Italian, and it's not particularly memorable. The do have a penchant for serving in small casserole dishes, even if the food wouldn't normally be presented that way. The menu is heavy on red-sauce-based entrees, and the sauce is light and not terribly flavorful. Service can be slow and somewhat brusque. More than once we ran down our own beverages when they weren't refilled. Like I said, Fred's is weird.

    This place USED to be good...before the owner died and the son took over. It USED to be a quaint establishment where you can indulge in family seating. SInce they expanded it has all become very commercial. The prices are double what they used to be...and have half of the items we had come to love have disappeared.No more spinach tortellini or foccaccia...two main Italian staples. I am 100 percent Italian and I can say...it's a damn shame this restaurant isn't what it used to be. Also, the waitress that served us was very rude and inattentive.

    I love Fred's. Although I live fairly close to it now, Fred's was once about a 40 minute drive from home. I could order something for pickup and it would still be hot when I got home. The obscure location only adds to its appeal for me.

    Mediocre, overpriced food. Be very careful to enunciate when placing your order. If your server gets it wrong, you will be blamed for your server's mistake. This happened to us and the server didn't feel the least bit embarassed about arguing with us in front of our party of ten people. Real classy.

    I remember my parents taking me here when I was a child. I have pleasant memories about the cozy decor and weird seating arrangement. Luckily, the ambiance remains and the tables have been separated. That's about all I can say positive about this restaurant. We ordered traditional entrees, spaghetti with meat sauce and chicken parmesan. Nice presentation though, a beautiful sprig of basil adorned the spaghetti and the chicken in it's own dish straight from the oven. The marinara is absolutely bland...blah...ketchup would have been a step up. Sadly, nothing could doctor this dead sauce. Our dinner was served with a salad and hot crusty dinner rolls. When the bread and butter are the highlight of the meal, you're in trouble. But the crowning glory was the bill. Don't get me wrong, if it's great food and service, I will happily open my wallet. I could have dined at Olive Garden or Spaghetti Warehouse and paid far less for sub par food.

    It's true that Fred's used to be kind of cramped, but they have recently remodeled and it's now very nice and roomy--I was really impressed with my most recent visits. The service has been excellent. I had kind of forgotten about the place, but I will be going back a lot more. To me, this is the way Italian food is supposed to taste. I can tell you that, as someone with a Sicilian bloodline who has been raised on real Italian food since birth, I am not easily impressed. This place's sauce is the closest to my Mom's recipe that I have ever had. Even my grandmother approved. Lately I've been getting the Pasta Alla Siciliana, a mixture of meatballs and sausage smothered in their excellent marinara with your choice of penne or spaghetti... comfort food to the max.

    This is a good Italian restaurant even though it may be a bit pricey around dinner time. Their shrimp alfredo pasta is one of the best I've had anywhere! There's an old New York's Little Italy feel. It's pretty romantic -- good for a date.

    Great atmosphere, good wine selection. The smaller restaurant size makes for a cozy dinning hall and ideal for dates, especially for you gentlemen who are trying to be suave. Wait staff may slightly pressure you into getting a bottle, etc., but you can handle it. The food and especially the wine are not inexpensive by any means, but it is delicious. I shall return as it benefits the neighborhood to have such good quality food so close at hand without it feeling like the cliche Italian!

    Chill out folks, it's a pretty good Groupon deal for 2 salads, 2 entrées up to $17.99/each and a dessert. Yes, they tagged 18% gratuity and most if not all the time it's mentioned in Groupon. Twice we've enjoy our lovely dinner with friendly service. -Crab Cakes: A bit hard on outside but the crab meat was delicious. -Shrimp Scampi: simple and garlicy. -Shrimp Fra Diavlo: I asked for not spicy and it tasted ok, maybe it's meant to be ordered spicy only. -Linguini Peacatore: it's like a seafood party in my mouth. I liked it. -Chicken Marsala: tender chicken infused in wine. Very tasty. -Dark & White Chocolate Mousse Cake: Soooo good! I'm keeping in real for yall! Nice cozy little place with decent food and price. I'll be back!

    I purchased a GroupOn (disappointed by the wording (more on it later)) for this place as I had never heard of it prior to that. I called up a friend of mine and she agreed to meet me there. I got a little carried away at the gym and was running a little late so she beat me before I could get there. Finally after upon arrival I was not greeted by anyone. I seated myself after adjusting my eyes to the dimly lit inside after being out in the Jupiter like sun of Houston. My friend already had a menu and was just browsing through the choices. The server looked confused when she came to ask me if I was ready to order. I politely told her I needed a menu. I think there was a lot of confusion going on as our menus were taken away by another guy while we were in the middle of our appetizer and the main entree order still had not been placed. I think this place can definitely benefit from better trained servers and some coordination amongst them. Onto the food: 1) Calamari for appetizer - Slightly thick batter but the more you ate it, the tastier it got. Marinara sauce was a little spicy. The other sauce was great with the calamari. Make sure you squeeze your lemon on it because it really enhances the flavor. 2) Two entrees with two salads - So with the GroupOn deal we could get two entrees that were worth $17.99 or less. The salad was included. For an additional $2.99 (I think) you could up your house salad to a caesar salad. No thank you. The salad was fine. I actually enjoyed it. Not sure what experience other reviewers had when they were complaining about the wilted greens. My friend got a pasta with clams and pesto. It looked microwaved. I felt bad for her. The clams looked like they were not fresh. I, on the other hand, got myself an order of the chicken marsala. It was a little on the fattier side but I needed to make up for my lost calories at the gym. The fettucine alfredo was a little too drenched but it paired so well with the oily chicken and mushrooms cooked in marsala. I ate every last bite of it. That also could have been due to the fact that I was EXTREMELY HUNGRY and I needed to sober up because we killed a bottle of malbec between the two of us. And by the two of us, I mean I had most of it. 3) Tiramisu - It was too big for me. They bring out a little tray of desserts to show you all the dessert options you can choose from. It was nice but unfortunately the desserts did not look appetizing. They looked dull and almost all the same. The tiramisu had a nice flavor. It helped me finish the remainder of my red. Overall, if they improve their service and don't make the dishes so rich (overly rich with oil and cream) then I think they can be what I think they used to be just from looking at the menu and the loyal customer base they have. We received a $5 off card for our next visit. Not sure when that will be but I really enjoyed the ambience and I hope that when I do go next, they will have fresher food and the service is en pointe.

    I have eaten here for lunch two times. I wouldn't say the restaurant is located at the corner but it is at the right side of this particular CVS anchored shopping district. When I went here for lunch with some collegues, it didn't seem terribly busy, which is a plus. We ordered at the counter, picked up a plastic cup and a soda can and then sat at a table nearby. Food was good and I was unable to finish my entree of eggplant and veal since I get full easily. It's an OK restaurant in my book.

    I first went to Fred's in the late 80's. It was sure the best home style iIalian restaruant around. You could get all the best authentic dishes. The quality and service were very consistant until they made the change. I think either old Fred had retired or he sold the place. I have been going to the newly renovated Fred's for couple of years. The food and service have been really hit or miss. A couple of times it was really good. Pasta was al dante, service was good. The other two times were just awful. Pasta was really mushy. That is a big no no for italian food. The service this last time was just terrible. I contemplate never going back. I mourn the loss of a good neighborhood restaurant! :(

    This is casual good Italian food. I am currently obsessed with the clam alfredo. The food is good, but its not cheap. The portions are generous. But I'm warning you , if you come in the middle of the dinner rush (7pm to 8pm) the service is going to suck. The food will still be great, but the place isn't very big and it can't hold all the people that love this place. So come a little earlier or a little later and it'll be perfect. Save room for the tiramisu. Its soooo good.

    This quaint little Italian restaurant is located in a shopping center right outside the Med Center. Lunch is counter service, while dinner is wait-staffed. I went there for lunch on a workday, and found quite a bit of variety with the lunch specials (side salad included). I ordered the Chicken Pinot Pasta for $12.95 - which I do find personally a little steep for lunch. It was one of the higher-priced items for lunch, but I gave in to its description and thought the food was tasty and the portion large enough that I had to box some of it home. It's not at the top of my list of work lunch options, but I see myself returning since it is a colleague's favorite.

    I was not impressed by this establishment though it appears to have been around for a long time. Salad was limp, bread was warm, pasta was filling - where else can you get meatballs and hard-boiled eggs in your pasta? Service was fine, but attention to detail may be lacking with a dirty cup and bent silverware. Overall, a casual, filling meal, but picky people may pause.     So after seeing four and five star reviews, I was expecting real Italian food, crispy bruschetta, al dente pasta, and homemade canolli. This restaurant was cute, and service wasn't bad, but the food was a let down. I had the garlic bread, eggplant parm. with a cesar salad and a canoli. The salad was full of brown pieces of romaine lettuce, and it did not come with the meal, the dressing was good, so I would rate it mediocre. The garlic bread was not crispy, but limp with butter and parsley and lots of chunks of raw garlic, that left a bitter flavor in your mouth. Maybe they should consider using roaste garlic, or crushing it finer. The eggplant parm was alright, the usual, but the pasta with it was limp and overcooked with a lot of sauce (not how the Italian's do it). Lastly, the canoli, it tasted like it was filled with overly sweet frosting, not a light ricotta filling (definately not homemade). Overall, I don't think that I would drive out of my way again for that experience, it wasn't horrible, but it did not meet expectations for the price.

    Fred's is the secret find of Houston...I'm going there tonight and can't wait. I'm in town for a week and I'm making time for Fred...what does that tell you. I remember a few years ago I was planning on going there for my birthday and it was closed for renovation...but it was definitely worth it...the place is super cute for a group or for a little date. Everything on the menu is great..my fave is the chicken parm....definitely worth a try...get there early..sometimes there is a wait...but it usually goes fast.

    If you are thinking of getting the GroupOn or similar offer from this place, a word of advise. Don't. They advertise a 3 course meal for two, when in fact you get to order two entrees (up to $18) and one dessert to share. The entree comes with a salad, so that is your first course. In addition, they add 18% gratuity on the total menu price of the meal. I wouldn't mind paying the 18% if the service was deserving. Although the server was friendly, he was slow and we had to ask several times for a child booster seat. All of this could be forgiven if the food was any good. Unfortunately it was not. The Garden with Olives actually serves better food than this place. Their Alfredo tasted like it came from a food service package and their seafood pasta was bland. Do yourself a favor. Go somewhere else. You have been warned.

    Just ordered a delivery order and everyone thought the food was awful. I had veal alfredo and it was bland the pasta was way overcooked and stuck together in a ball. The shrimp milano also was very bland according to coworker. My other coworker had the spinach artichoke dip and it tasted spoiled/sour. Overall, everyone who ordered was very disappointed in the food. This was our 1st and last experience with this place.

    We celebrated our anniversary today. We decided to stop in to neighborhood Italian restaurant. There is plenty of parking. There is indoor and outdoor seating. When you walk inside, the ambiance is quiet and intimate. It is a great place to have conversation with close friends, family or date. Staff was attentive, helpful and friendly. Our meal was full of flavor and spices. We had wine and paired great with our meal. Tiramisu was our favorite. Overall 4 stars out of 5 due to tight seating for two. Our table could only fit a limited number of items. We do plan to return soon. Basil soup - nice taste and subtle Minestrone soup - more vibrant taste Caesar salad for him - good House salad with Italian dressing - came in cute bottle and tasted good Monday special - beef and lamb with pita, hummus, and cucumber dip. The lamb was extremely soft. Manicoto with sausage, it was cheesy and great combination of spices. We tried to save some of our tiramisu for tomorrow. After a few bites, it was gone. Staff was helpful, told us specials on the wine, and also let us know about extra charge when you upgrade to ceasar salad. We were the 3rd group to arrive Monday afternoon. The restaurant was getting full. Someone stop by our table and asked how our meal was and we told him it is really good. It is the best place to relax before heading back out into busy traffic.

    Having been admitted to TMH and absolutely tired of the dreadful hospital food, I looked to my good buddy Yelp for some local delivery options. I settled on Fred's bc I love Italian food. Knowing that the minimum delivery fee was $25, I took my time to figure out what all I wanted. The ordering process was pretty painless. Fast forward to the delivery... : The driver meets me in the valet area and I see my total for the first time - $39.18! I was most definitely taken aback, but I quickly let that go bc my greedy ass ordered with no hesitation. Lol As Im going through my bag, I notice Im missing two things (salad and strawberry lemonade) but the driver had already SPED off. I called to inform him and had to wait 15 minutes for him to return with my items. Finally back to my room, I take everything out to fully survey what I spent almost $40 on. A pasta (w/ salad included), a soup, a dessert, and a drink. Minestrone soup - Being a bit of a soup snob, I was a bit hesitant about how it would taste. It was pretty good; I was satisfied. Although for the price, there definitely should have been more. The included cut french bread pieces went well with it. ($3.25 for a small ass "cup") House salad - Blah. Glad it was included. Would have been pissed if I had to pay for it separately. You get some almost wilted greens and ONE cucumber, ONE red onion, and ONE tomato. Dressing was okay, kinda a knock off Olive Garden thing going on. (Included with pasta) Penne alla Capri - I was a bit disappointed here. I asked to have the shrimp subbed (Im allergic) for chicken. Bad idea! I took ONE bite of chicken and discarded the rest. It was super rubbery and bland. Just totally gross! The pasta was al dente, sauce has a distinct aftertaste that I cant quite place. It wasnt bad, just.....different. I enjoyed the spinach though. ($15.99) Strawberry Lemonade - A major (pricey) mistake. Weird tasting to say the least.. For an 8 oz. cup, I shouldn't have had to pay as much. It should have been FREE. ($2.79) Cannoli - The pièces de résistance! I absolutely love a good cannoli!! It was sooo good. Really was the only thing that could redeem this shoddy meal. Slightly smaller than what Im used to getting, especially for the price point for them individually. I would order them again only.. ($9.00) I'm not a person to say NEVER, so I'll say I for damn sure won't order from Fred's again. Especially since they include 18% gratuity without allowing me the opportunity to do so.

    Recently went to use a groupon. Restaurant was small, but packed and service was good. We started with the calamari which was large, but mediocre. The marinara was good, however, as was the aioli. Both the house and Cesar salad were average. The house dressing is homemade and was pretty good. The complimentary bread was merely untouched french bread and was nothing to write home about. I had the linguine pescatore which was surprisingly good and full of seafood as advertised. I would def get this again. The herb salmon was also pretty good. All desserts are housemade and looked good. Overall, this was a good neighborhood Italian spot and i look forward to exploring the menu more.

    I went for dinner last night on the recommendation of a friend. The restaurant is located in a shopping center on Holcombe and was easy to find. When I walked in I immediately received a good vibe. The interior is nicely decorated and all of the waitstaff were dressed in white tuxedo shirts with bow ties. This added to the restaurant giving it a somewhat upscale feel. Upon being seated and presented the menu I decided to go basic and order the spaghetti with meat sauce. It comes with a side salad for $11.95. The salad arrived about 5 minutes later with a basket of 3 slices of bread. The salad was good with the Italian dressing along with the bread. About 15 minutes later the entree arrived in a nice sized bowl. I thought the spaghetti was good. The meat sauce was a little tangy for me but I toned it down a notch with some of the Parmesan cheese that was provided. This was a good meal. I would order it again. My score of 3 should not prevent you from coming here. This was my first visit and I ordered a basic Italian dish and everything was acceptable and the way it should be. I hope to come back and try something else on the menu maybe a pizza... This could be a 4 star restaurant and if so I will adjust the rating after my next visit. My table service was very good.

    I will not reccomend this merchant at all. They CHARGE 18% gratuity on all groupon orders. It was a date night out and this place upsets me. :( I talked to them before hand and telling them that I have a groupon but they NEVER mentioned anything regarding this 18% I got $29 groupon for this place. Technically it says 3 course meal which you think might include appetizer, main entree (up to $18) and ONE dessert for two people to share. What you get was NO appetizer, salad (which usually come as main entree, and a dessert to share). If you ordered a caesar salad, supposedly come with in the groupon, they make you pay for the service charge of it.. What I am very upset about was, you ordered $50 worth of food (which you have technically paid in groupon for $29) they charged you 18% gratuity from the $50.. so I have to pay an extra $14 out of pocket. The only extra item we got was a root beer that costs $2.99 with tax ($3.34). But because we got - one caesar salad ($+2.99), two main entrees ($17 each) and one dessert (+$4.50) they charged us about $10 just for the gratuitiy. This should not be legal. I would have happily give them tips, but forcing us to tip is just illegal. I think they need to take down the groupon offer. Servie was nice enough though, I like that the "owner/ manager" came and ask how is everything. We got caesar salad (+2.99) and a house salad (comes with the entree). I got shrimp alfredo and my boyfriend got veal alfredo. The sauce is tad too thick for his taste and his veal is tad too thin (doesn't balance.. in his words). I like my alfredo sauce. Shrimp was fresh and huge as well. I enjoyed it. :) We got canolli as our dessert (just one dessert provided as stated in groupon and I'm totally fine with that) The 18% gratuity still trumps everything. They should not be doing business this way. Seems like they make us pay the 18% and somehow it turns out they don't lose much.. It is not written anywhere that we have to pay for the 18% in the groupon as well. I think I will have to ask groupon to pull their offer down. This is unfair to other people who are thinking to get the groupon and dine there only to find out, oh you have to pay about $20 extra out of pocket after paying $30 groupon so the restaurant doesn't lose as much money. This is definitely not a deal. Do not order groupon from here!

    I really liked this place. I wouldn't call it high end, but they do try to give you that feeling. I'm a basic Italian foodie. I always order the basic stuff like spaghetti and meatballs or fettuccine Alfredo. So I took a walk on the wild side and got the fettuccine Alfredo with grilled shrimp. Lol. Anyway it was good. My friend orders this Penne pasta dish. I don't remember. But it was good. I even liked the salad dressing. I'm telling y'all this is the Italian spot if you're in the West U area.

    Fred's is that comfy, cozy, old-school, neighborhood, Italian restaurant. In the evenings with the lights turned down low and white linens, it's romantic. Definitely better than a Buca do Bebbo! Service is polite and together. In terms of dinner, both the house and caesar salads are adequately crisp, if a little overdressed. Unmemorable, but at an Italian place, it's the classics that matter. Osso Bucco usually is braised for hours to in order to soften the toughness of the shank. Fred's didn't quite get it there - the masala sauce was rich and flavorful, but the pork itself required a steak knife. For dessert, the dark and white chocolate mousse cake is decadent - the ganache alone is smooth, creamy, just enough sugar to let the chocolate shine and the chiffon cake is moist, light, and airy.

    I used to eat at Fred's regularly in the 80s. I can remember Fred sitting behind the register taking my order. He had a heavy Italian accent and always wore a white chef's hat. Each summer he would shut down the restaurant for several weeks and go to Italy. I always thought it was cool that he elected to give up the revenue to take a break. I know running a restaurant is hard work, and taking a break was probably good for him and his employees. Fast forward thirty years later, and I'm having dinner at Fred's last Friday night. I was happy to find it still open, but learned Fred had passed in 2004. The restaurant is stuck in time, but is still strong. I love small family operated restaurants like this. I ordered the Shrimp Fra Diavolo, and the menu's description warns the dish is spicy. I usually find that even with a warning, dishes are never spicy enough for me. That was definitely not the case as it was almost too spicy. The pasta and shrimp were fresh and overall the dish was pretty good.

    I wish I could rate this place a 3.5, so don't let my 3 star review dissuade you from eating here. Let's get one thing out of the way, though: this place is overpriced. Not terribly so, but if some of the prices were more reasonable, I'd definitely bump it up to a 4. Fred's fancies itself a fine dining restaurant, but it's location in a strip mall suggests otherwise. To their credit, Fred's has a cozy environment and the servers do make an effort to give you a fine dining experience (but then again, so does the Olive Garden, and they charge half the price). If you're in the med center, however, and you have a craving for good Italian food, then give Fred's a try. I tried the fried crab cakes appetizer and, for someone who considers themselves a crab cake snob, I was actually very pleased with the flavors and textures. Again, a little overpriced for the size of the appetizer, but dammit I love me some crab cakes! Recently I had the linguine pescatore (served with a small house salad) and found it enjoyable. It was a huge portion--I had enough to take home and eat lunch the next day--and while the flavors were good (standard seafood/tomato sauce) the texture of the pasta was out of this world. Fred's, are you guys serving up homemade pasta?? If so, then that would explain the pricing of some of the menu items. Overall our meal was very enjoyable. They skimped on the bread and the dessert tasted store-bought, but I would definitely go back again. FYI, if you bought the groupon there's an upper limit on the amount you can spend for each course. I personally would not purchase the groupon again as it didn't cover the appetizer and I have no interest in eating dessert here, but if you have a sweet tooth it may be worth your while.

    My boyfriend and I were just hungry and around the area so we decided to try this place. The decor inside was too dark to see because of the lights and I couldn't tell who our waiter was. They placed us at a booth because the place was relatively busy and many tables hadn't been cleaned yet. The food was great! Nice big portions and tasted fresh. I had the Veal with Fettuccine Alfredo and I loved it! The pasta was thicker than other places but I wished they put more sauce on it! **If you go there make sure to order their strawberry lemonade! It's so good!!
