Italian Cuisine
The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.
Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.
If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.

We've been here around 10 times and the food and service is very consistent. Best Italian I've had in Dallas. The eggplant parm, shrimp linguine, garlic bread, and beet salad are all phenomenal! It's a great place to have a bottle of wine with excellent food. The only reason I give them 4 stars instead of 5 is because the wooden chairs are extremely uncomfortable, and difficult to sit in for any length of time. Because of this we usually call in an order and pick it up.

Well this place never disappoints me. Tried the fried calamari and Eggplant Parmesan, both were out of bounds. The calamari was fresh and crispy, the eggplant light and delectable and Scott makes the whole dinning experience so enjoyable.

Calling ahead on a Friday night, they let us know they do not take reservations, but the wait would only be about 20 minutes. Unheard of in Dallas. They actually seated us right away and the place was busy, but there were two other tables that had just become available. My pet peeve when going to a restaurant is that the host(ess) should seat you at the best table available. Everyone is happy! We were seated at a corner two top. I should have said something. I was uncomfortable all evening. Good conversation with my husband, but I enjoy looking around and seeing my surroundings. We were next to the window, but it's frosted. So I felt very claustrophic. The 4 top seated right behind our arrival ended up with one person. You never know how it's going to work out, but next time I will ask to wait for another. I understand about spreading out the service for the wait staff, but on a busy weekend night, that system is out the window. Our server was very nice, if a bit too busy to be appropriately attentive. Had to wait to get his attention more than once. Their drink prices are two high. Our second drink was an apperitif and the server should have asked why it wasn't drank. We ordered Grilled Shishito Peppers as an appetizer. They were delicious. However, we had to ask for bread. The peppers needed something to go with them. The first pepper I put in my mouth was HOT and I like fire, but I was glad it was only 2 out of about 12-15 that were that hot. We split the wedge salad and it was perfect for two. Just enough crispy prosciutto, dressing and heirloom tomatoes. For our meal we chose the special which was a fra diavolo and I had the arugula raviolini. Mine was very good, just rich enough not to be heavy, but very good flavors with a light creamy sauce. The fra diavolo lacked any spicy heat. The seafood was fresh though. While the drink prices are a bit steep, the food prices are reasonable. I've heard the lobster roll for lunch is good and I hope to go back to try it, but I think I'll save my italian dinner nights for somewhere else.

Carbone's offers classic Italian food. I'm not going to say home-style, but exotic and experimental would be the last words I would use to describe Carbone's (read this as Carbone's serves standard Italian food). That being said, Carbone's does these well. Wine list is a little boring, as I always find it great to mix countries up. But Carbone's is loyal to the Italian theme...so more power to them.

This is a sister restaurant to Nonna just a few blocks away. Yet it serves somewhat different food: more casual, rather than crisp or elegant.

$36 dollars for a single entree and a glass of wine at a casual bistro in Dallas is a little ambitious, but the neighboring grey hairs might support such audacity. ($41 after tip) The veal scallopine ($22) was flavorful, if salty, with a beefy gravy on top of mashed potatoes. It hit the spot, and so did my Pinot ($11) I just felt like this place wasn't very economically friendly, and maybe it doesn't have to be. The $7 cannoli is also outrageous, even though it's done right. I hit la Madeline for dessert, and almost wished I woulda ate my whole meal here instead. Entrees start at $10, a cheaper bistro version and vibe. $10 sandwiches and pasta dishes just under $20. Dear Waitress tips: Being bubbly and upbeat, and cute, doesn't off set certain subtle touches like: A. Your only conversation involves ordering and up selling. And your energy was upbeat but betrayed a type of impatience. B. You take glasses and plates, right before the last drop or bite. Instead, it would have been nice if you offered me some bread to sop up the gravy. C. Make sure to say thank you to your customers before the leave. For a $40 dinner in Dallas you need to be more gratious. You weren't busy.

Awesome service, small chef inspired environment. If you want personal and an exceptional experience this is the place.

I love this place! I've been here at least 10 times. I can honestly say it's one of the best Italian Resturants I've ever been too. The food is amazing, the service is always great and the ambience is on point. I love everything about this place. Even the desserts are delicious especially the panna-cotta. I recommend it to everyone! Everything I've ever eaten here is cooked perfectly!

Oh, My, Goodness. A friend and I went for dinner because her friend gave her a gift certificate. First problem was the layout... very open and non-intimate. Bright white interior with simple cold tables and one section of the place is an actual deli. I ordered the special that came with a pork cheek... the pork cheek was tough and like rubber with an odd after taste. To bad, because the rest of the dish was a pretty tasty sauce. So I sent mine back and opted for lasagna. Seconds after my plate left the table I looked over and say something shiny in my friends plate... um, what is that I said? it was metal... like a shred of a can lid or something like it. She was horrified. Back it went... the lasagna was about an non special as it could get and the cannolis? Well those just pissed me off. Coming from Philly and remembering those big beautiful cannolis with the hard crush and thick cream? Not here... these two little things had almost a runny cream in them and wouldn't even hold up long enough to eat them. I did not find this food authentic or full of flavor and I've spent time in Italy... southern Italy which is known for more home style Italian, northern for more upscale flavor and flair... this was neither. One good thing was they comp'd a good portion of the meal. Down side? She still had that gift certificate and doesn't really want to go back!

My husband and I have driven by this place many many times. From the window, it looked like a cozy comfortable place to eat. Much to our delight, it was this and more. The hostess was very sweet and had a great smile (I should have gotten her name), the restaurant was busy and the style of the place reminded us of a small Italian place you would see in NYC. Tony was our waiter. He was awesome. Every suggestions was right on mark. There were plenty of items to choose from but not overwhelming. We started with the calamari, we both had the Cesar salad, one of the best in town, crunchy & fresh. After our Cesar salads, a must have, I had tortellini and he had the lasagna. Both dishes were delicious. Authentic and rustic. The wine list was impressive and plenty to choose from. Well...we couldn't leave without desert. I had the chocolate cake, super moist and he had the cream cake, he loved it. During the middle of our dinner, Jonathan, the executive chef, came by our table and he couldn't be more friendly. He made us feel as if we have been going there for years. He left quite the impression. No doubt we will return and it will be one of our, not only Italian place but one of our favorite restaurants. It was a great evening. Thanks guys!!!

This is a great neighborhood restaurant. The food is great and the service is always friendly. The spinach lasagna is the best
(5)Tiffany H.
I almost hate to write this rave review because I still want to be able to get a table at this small, neighborhood restaurant. Everything from the bentwood chairs to the open kitchen is perfect. Oh yeah, and the food... It's complete perfection. The menu is small but there is something for everyone. The Shrimp Scampi with homemade linguine is very light and not overly sauced. The Lasagna with meat is divine. Again, homemade sheets of pasta layered with the right about of sauce and cheese. The Sunday Gravy is a meat sauce pasta but with less sauce and an al dente macaroni-type pasta. The Cannoli are light, tender shells around light, cinnamon cream. Small, 2 to an order. The salads are all fresh, light and not overly loaded with dressing. My faves are the beet salad and the Chopped Antipasti but my husband always gets the Caesar. Super friendly staff too!!
(5)Bret D.
Good food and nice ambience for a neighborhood location. I have to admit that my eyebrows were raised when I heard that spaghetti and meatballs were a specialty on the menu. The waiter was right on point. I was very well pleased by the quality and tastes. This was a great neighborhood spot that is a very nice fit for a Sunday or weekday dinner. I topped this off after a great workout in Oak Lawn, and I'm impressed by the ease of the locale and the mix of the clientele. Good spot...Thumbs-up. BD
(4)Lauren W.
Really great pasta dishes here. I was very impressed with the food quality. The pasta I ordered was cooked al dente and this is hard to find. Excellent fish dish also and the vegetables were fresh and delicious. Service was friendly and efficient. I will return.
(4)Rosa R.
The best part of the evening (besides the outstanding food) was our server Roxanne. She was on top of her game! My husband and I enjoyed the most delicious escarole and white bean soup, followed by an amazing linguine w/ shrimp scampi. Fun atmosphere, quick service and good prices. We will be back!
(4)Tony R.
Atmosphere - 5 Service - 5 Food - 5 Value - 5 Carbones has to be one of the best Italian restaurant that I have found so far in Texas (including Dallas, Houston, Austin).... Yes, that's a bold statement, but it's true. I've had great Italian in New York and Boston and Carbones holds its own again these regions. EVERYTHING is made from scratch including the pasta. I got the Sunday meal (4 course)... Fried Qual salad, Lobster Pasta, Veal, and Peach Tiramisu... All of it was great. The veal was cooked perfectly and the white wine sauce was awesome. I'm looking forward to going back again!
(5)Jim H.
This is the best Italian food in Dallas. Period. This is not the typical large portion and poorly constructed Italian food. All pasta is made fresh and the portions are perfect. Additionally, they develop tremendous flavored that come through with every bite which are subtle but still powerful. We have yet to find a dish we don't love and even the bread you can get with the meal is five star. Make sure you leave room for their terrific made from scratch deserts. Oh, the service which has a low server to patron ratio meets the same quality of the food.
(5)Bryan W.
This has got to be the best deal on Italian food in Dallas. Carbones is a higher end restaurant with a relaxed atmosphere. I would not feel uncomfortable bringing my children for dinner. The lasagna is awesome! Our ticket was under $100 for four adults. In Highland Park this is unheard of. The food is excellent. Probably the best I have had in Dallas. Don't let the low prices be a deterrent. The food is equivalent to restaurants that are twice the price. I do wish they would take reservations for dinner. We walked in and got a table immediately but it is nice to know the table is reserved.
(5)Heather L.
Hubby and I have been twice now and look for an excuse to come to Dallas from an hours drive away on Sunday so we can enjoy the most delicious homemade Italian food and clean comfortable low crowd restaurant. I love to sit by the large windows people watching as we enjoy our conversation and light but extremely delicious food. I've never had such fine thin strands of Fettuchini before. It's a place I want to keep all toy self but can't help telling others about. I completely agree with everything in Aaron E.'s review, although have yet to have room for dessert but look forward to trying that chocolate cake. Great and friendly staff who aim to please. We WILL be back!
(5)Jenna M.
Great Italian in Dallas, and that's coming from a second generation Italian who is picky. All of the pasta was made fresh and cooked to perfection. The sauces were fresh, flavorful, yet simple. The cream sauce was not swimming in cream, but rather light and reminiscent of the way it's done at home. The atmosphere is pleasant and intimate - good for a date or catch-up dinner with friends. My only complaint is the portion size - I swear, I'm slim and not gluttonous, but I came here pretty hungry, and left only mildly full after one shared appetizer (amongst 4) and one main pasta. And the prices are high for those little portions... I guess it's Italian style sizes, where two people might order a salad or appetizer, pasta and main dish, sharing all three.
(4)Steve H.
The BEST homemade pasta and cannoli I have ever had!!! The service was fantastic and very helpful with menu selection. Small menu but EVERYTHING is perfection. Salads are FRESH!!!
(5)Frances G.
Alright, Alright! Finally made it to my neighborhood's newest addition - Carbone's. Though, I only indulged in the take out feature of the restaurant, the casual Italian eatery is one I will probably re-visit for a sit down meal. The service is certainly above par - probably aligning with the upscale image they are trying to portray. But that's just the thing. Fancy or upscale is not a superlative I would use when writing about this fast-paced, almost diner-like, joint. Adorable and charming would be more like it. My roasted beet salad and Maytag Bleu Cheese salad was delicious and loaded with beets. The lettuce to beets and cheese ratio was a solid 2:1, however it was take-out from an area of the restaurant designed for a take-away experience. Thus, bringing me to my original point: it's a casual, cute place with authentic Italian, but with prices that don't reflect the environment. Bottles of wine line the back wall and I thought to myself....hmm maybe I will just purchase a bottle of wine for myself tonight. After peeping at the lowest price at $35 per bottle, I was suddenly perplexed. Indeed, Highland Park necessitates a certain standard, but let's figure out the experience you want your customers to walk away with first. Again, the food and service deserve plenty praise, however it is not dining at the Plaza in New York. And nothing is wrong with that.

What a treat! Their food is outstanding. The bread is perfection with just the right amount of crunch on the outside, and softness inside. I highly suggest you get the homemade fettuccini noodles with bolgonese sauce. It may have been the best pasta dish I have ever had. Would make for a very romantic dinner, or fun place out with friends and family. It's a splurge, but worth it completely
(5)Anthony S.
The pastas were awesome! Appetizers were ok - and rather boring. They definitely put a southern spin to the appetizers by making a fried ravioli. Delicious, but I don't know how that's authentic italian! Food prices match the quality of food. Wait wasn't long for a party of 7 and they were happy to accommodate us. Will make it back to try a few other items on the menu.
(4)Liz S.
If I had to describe Carbone's in one word it would be WHOA!!! I was so impressed by the effortless food here I can't wait to go back. Everything we had tasted so fresh, light and transported you to the coast of Italy. A few things that are not to be missed are the calamari, garlic bread with burratta, hierloom tomato and mozarella salad and the vegetable lasagna. They even have a "special" dessert of the night and if it is carrot cake, you will be so glad you ordered it. Carbone's only has a few tables to dine at as well as a walk up counter to place to go orders so be sure to come early as they do not take reservations yet.
(5)Aaron E.
I love a place that wants to feed me a phenomenal meal without bludgeoning my stomach with bloated portions. I like walking away feeling satisfied, instead of stuffed. Leftovers are always a bonus, but that usually comes at the expense of an expanded waistline. Carbone's delivers just the right amount, with quality trumping quantity by a huge margin. It's about the only restaurant around where I actually look forward to enjoying desert, because I can. The star here is the pasta. My God, the best pasta I've ever had. Married with a delicious, light sauce, and you've got a recipe for happiness. I think I could eat it every day. I'm not a big fan of lasagna. It tends to be really heavy. But Carbone's is different. Light without being inadequate. The flavors blend so well together. The eggplant parm is also one of my favorites. Non-fried, light, perfectly cooked, and absolutely delicious. And then there's that damn chocolate cake. Yes, that's all I can say about it. Yes, give me more. "Would you like the chocolate cake, sir?" YES!! I like leaving wanting more. The Beatles weren't great because they beat you over the head with their best hooks, they always left you wanting more. The same can be said for Carbone's. Every time I pass by it, I want to stop in and say hi, and get a piece of chocolate cake :). I want more. I want it now. And I'm willing to pay a premium for that experience.
(5)Christie S.
Nice casual atmosphere & delicious lasagna. Sunday gravy is addicting! I enjoy the salads & broccolini too.
(5)Julie U.
Always have great pasta dishes here. The Ravioli of Italian Sausage & Ricotta alla Vodka...is delicious. My go to every time.
(4)Christopher B.
I promised an update after I had actually managed to east here. So here it is. I popped in for lunch one day a couple of weeks back. It was late in the lunch day. I ordered the pasta with Sunday gravy and some tea, followed by a double espresso. The pasta was delicious. I really enjoyed it - and the Sunday gravy was excellent too. Just the right amount (but pricy - I guess good ingredients and preparation are expensive). I didn't care for the tea. I like my tea to taste like - well - tea. This had some flowery notes to it. Not bad enough to send back, but certainly not what my mouth was expecting. Still, I thought it a pretty good spot. If I am in the area I would go back.

I try not to do negative reviews unless they are justified. I will let the manager / owner know on the spot why so they are aware. In hopes that they can make the correction. Carbones was a place I wanted to visit as it is along my travel path with 5 mintues of home. I wanted a special occassion to enjoy the meal. Carbones is not worth the trip nor the expense. After waiting an hour I had to hunt down the hostess because the waiter has vanished our water glasses were empty and we had not even recieved our garlic and ricotta bread. The waiter finally appears and he would find our order. Another 15 min and the waiter appears and informs us there is NO LASAGNA I asked about the bread and no bread either. I asked for the manager she appears without a reason for the delay 2 hours no food. 2 hour 30 min later four pieces of toast appear empty water glasses 2 hours 45 minutes a christmas miracle lasagna appears the same lasagna that was no available earlier this lasagna was apparently left overs from the prior night dinner buffett. The lasagna bolonese cheese was fused into a gelatinous gooy as found when reheating day old pizza. Marie Calandars frozen meat lasagna tasted better and a better price $ 3.00 Krogers and it feeds two. At the end of our meal the water glass was filled as we walked out. 3 hours 45 min. I informed the manager of the first last and bad experience. She did apologize and compt the meal but how does one recoup 2 hours 30 minutes. Setting this aside Carbones its not worth the money Carbones has a very prestigous location with monetary physical traffic in the millions near Oaklawn and Highland Park which they are squandering by providing a meal just at fast food grease spoon level. I give Carbones 2 months til they close thier doors.
(1)Lee R.
This was my third and most satisfying visit to Carbone's. Although the restaurant's noise level was greater than expected on a Friday evening, we were satisfied with how quickly we were able to be seated. Carbone's only takes reservations for parties of six and more. The ravioli and linguine pasta dishes served at our table were enjoyed, if overly salted. In the absence of any gluten-free pasta option (why is Dallas so behind the curve on this?) another of our group settled for an acceptable iceberg lettuce wedge. The evening's highlight was an off-the-menu pecan cake, however, with dollops of gooey carmelized pecans and rich ice cream. Service was personable if slightly harried and young to the task.
(4)J T.
Very great addition to the Oak Lawn area. This place is a small little Italian specialty market and restaurant, serving some hard to find ingredients and house-made sausage and other meats. They do a phenomenal lunch service, especially on Thursday when they offer their roast porchetta hero. The staff and selection are wonderful - this place is definitely worth patronizing.
(4)Tim D.
Have been looking forward to eating here since everyone has said nothing but great things about it. Went for brunch this morning. First clue was it was empty, 3 other tables on a Sunday. The waiter was in a mood. The menu was so limited, we decided on soup and salad and a glass of wine. The soup was covered in a layer of olive oil and tasted awful. When the waiter ask how everything was, I replied the soup was a little heavy on the oil. He brought another cup without the oil topping. I wish I could say it was great but how can you screw up a basic soup and ceasar salad. We always give a place a second chance, but $50.00 later so poor quality it may not happen with this place.
(1)Jennie Z.
Have to admit - was a bit disappointed. They do NOT have lobster ravioli!! Someone told me they did... Atmosphere was bizarre - a mix of fancy white table cloth, with a shop/store thing in the back; mix of uppidy yuppies with old old grandparents. Tasty, but prices were a bit high I think. I got the Chicken special - there was nothing special about it- Just chicken breast over polenta. A bit dry and had a funny taste. I think around $20. Others had the Ravioli with Sausage and Ricotta ($17) and Spaghetti and Meatballs ($16). The Ravioli got pretty high praises. We also had the Calamari which was decent - crispy and tasted like it should, nothing special. Portions were normal- one serving size - we didn't have any leftovers (not like the usual huge portions at other Italian restaurants) Only Beer and Wine. Cheapest wines by the glass were around $11/12 Verdict: probably won't go back unless someone drags me.
(3)Shanna L.
Come in and take away a lasagna for that couple you keep promising to invite over for dinner, or stop in for a quick soup and sandwich lunch during drizzly, cold weather. I've done both - as well as be the invitee for the takeaway dinner - and nothing disappoints. Sauce, balls, they've got it all :) Great place to sit and chat over coffee and dessert or to pick up a bottle of wine and fresh baked bread for a dinner party. Despite the location I've never had issues with parking, getting in and out is a breeze with the reserved "15 minutes only" spots right up front. 2 thumbs up, this cute little joint remains in regular rotation for me.
(4)Dallas T.
Great food. I'm definitely going back. Thanks Carbone's!
(4)dean d.
Pea Pesto & Scallions Bruschetta was smokey and delicious. Lasagna al ragu bolognese was amazing. Prices: ouch but worth it. The door greeter/seater at the front door makes no eye contact, does not talk to you, doesn't ask you to follow here, and pretty much dumps the menus on the table and walks away: pretty pathetic. I guessed she's the Owner's girlfriend or a very short time employee.
(4)Charlie S.
The first thing you should know about Carbone's is that it is pricey for pasta, but its also extremely high quality. So if you desire artisan crafted pasta, this is your place. I went to Carbone's a few nights ago for business and really enjoyed the neighborhood atmosphere and linguine with shrimp scallopini. My one complaint was the service was just ehh. For instance, the server did not give us any bread and butter and took 10 minutes to get parmesan cheese for the table. To be fair, this Saturday night was particularly busy. The food is there, the service just needs to catch up.
(3)Jen K.
Great staff and the red sauce is perfection. Ravioli was the best I have ever had in Texas.
(4)Doug P.
I visited Carbones yesterday to grab an a bite to go. The Italian combo is probably my favorite in Dallas. And yes I have been to Jimmy's several times. I also ordered the shishito peppers on the side. I ate the entire box before I could even get home to eat the rest of my meal. I cannot wait to go back to Carbone's for dinner and of course will be a repeat customer for lunch!
(5)Angela H.
Waiter was non existant and so the service was a no go. I can handle an OK dish if the service is great...but I am big on that so I am going to pass. The Chicken dish was okay...too much skin and fat for my liking. The roasty potato wedges were great. The Caprese...which they call it something else here...was also divine...however it needed more EVOO...had no salt or fresh pepper...which was delivered about 3/4 of the way through the app...Epic Fail. So the food in wonderful...service sucks...I need both to be happy.
(2)Tori L.
Oh my goodness! We wanted to go to the place down the street, but it was closed. Hungry and disappointed, we walked into Carbones. Four friendly staff members waited on us! Bottomless mimosas, the food was out of this world! (I'm Italian and I'm picky with my pasta), and you have to try the garlic bread- OH MY GOD! So good. The Italian cream cake was also divine. DEFINITELY recommend as a new neighborhood favorite!!!!!
(5)Andre L.
Food was delicious, service was incredible- Matt was great and his advice and menu knowledge helped us make great choices! Come eat here- period. Build one in Houston ASAP please
(5)Christine L.
Dear Carbone's, I am writing you this because I care. You actually deserve 5, or 6 stars. Your food is that good! However I am disappointed in the price point you charge, especially when the food is "order at the counter". $16 for a small pasta is very over-priced even in Highland Park- granted its in a strip mall where Talbots use to be... And that is not even including a salad or garlic bread. I compare your home-made pastas to Lucia in Bishop Arts. I commend you for a good job on the food. However, I was not impressed by your wine by the glass selection and the atmosphere. If you are going to charge that much, at least get better looking tables (yes, I noticed how cheap looking they were) and you need a better logo to reflect your artistry. I hope you will take this feedback in good stride to improve your establishment because your food rocks!
(3)Michael N.
what a great place. from Italian deli to sit down restaurant. Serving food your Italian grandmother would hate cuz they are better than hers! Went everyday for a week to try everything and wasn't disappointed! Time to start with a new group of friends to showcase this find!
(5)Kyle A.
This newly opened Italian cafe/market is just what the neighborhood needed. Although we've only tried the lunch menu, we are still very excited about this little place. Specializing in sandwiches and pasta, Carbone's offers a limited menu of well-crafted items. The meatball sandwich is incredible and we declare it the best we've had. The house made bread was perfect- crispy on the outside and warm and tender in the middle, it forms a cocoon of perfection around the delectable contents. The meatballs themselves are tender and flavorful, and the vibrant tomato sauce was proportioned correctly; just enough to add flavor and keep it moist, but not enough to cascade down the sides when bitten into or turn the whole thing into a soggy mess. Another sandwich, the Cuban panini- porchetta, ham, provolone, spicy pickles and a tasty hot sauce ensconced in crispy grilled bread- is worth a try. Also liked was a very nice white bean soup with escarole- though understand if you order the cup size you will get a small ramekin that anywhere else would be used as a condiment dish. When getting a sandwich to go, my order was given to the wrong customer. To make up for the delay and confusion, the counter person threw in a couple of cannolis. Goodness! I never knew I liked cannolis this much. The ones I've had were hard and kinda stale with a pasty filling. These were delicate shells filled with a just-the-right-amount-of-cinnamon flavored ricotta and were a triumph par excellence. The market selections include cured meats, wine, cheeses, and fresh made bread and pasta. We can't wait to run down the street to grab some campenelle and prosciutto for a quick summer salad.
(4)Jens M.
Stopped by for brunch on a Saturday at noon. As we walked up, we weren't even sure it was open - it was a little past noon, it looked dark inside and no one was in the place. Kind of odd considering they have a specific weekend brunch menu. The food was very good, even at the Park Cities pricing levels. Lasagne is light and there is plenty of it. The caprese salad is worth trying as is the meatball hero. Minestrone soup is excellent. This has to be the first Italian restaurant I have ever been to that doesn't offer bread with a meal. Service was excellent, which isn't hard with only one occupied table. They also have take-out food and wine - again, pretty steep on the prices. We'll give it a try for dinner.

Carbone's is right around the corner from my house and I've been dying to try it. Finally went last night with three others. It was a busy Sunday night for them, we had to wait about 40 minutes for our table (they only take reservations for parties of 6+). For such a small place, there is plenty of space to wait and the Italian groceries and products they sell keep you distracted for a little while. We ordered a bottle of wine before we sat down and the girl that helped us had no problem giving us a recommendation in our price range. The bottle she picked was exactly what we wanted. When we sat down to eat, our waiter was super sweet and provided great service. We chose to do our meal family style...two salads, three entrees, and two desserts so that we could get a nice tour of the menu. Everything tasted fantastic, but the sausage ravioli (a dish I'd never normally order on my own) was ah-mazing. The only thing I wouldn't rave about is the canoli, but I can handle that. The tiramisu made up for it. Overall, the experience was wonderful and at one point the manager even came over to thank us for being there and apologized for the long wait. We never felt as though we waited longer than expected, but it was so kind of him to come by. He really cared about our experience. Definitely going back. Great Dallas restaurant!!

The Sunday gravy and fresh pasta are great meals at home. Just wish the woman who helped me wasn't so snooty! I'm pretty sure she's the manager- what happened to decent customer service!? I wasn't quite sure what I needed to buy, but rather than getting annoyed with me, maybe you can actually help me figure it out! I was in there for a matter of 3 minutes. It's just so frustrating when people get annoyed at questions- so rude. What a shame.

Dined on a busy Tuesday night. Wait was only a quick 15 minutes and they stated that they do not take reservations. I started with a glass of Pinot Grigio which was priced average, not cheap. For dinner I chose the shrimp scampi and it was absolutely delicious. Carbone's does not load you up with bread before dinner so a salad before your entree may be a good thing. My pasta dish was pricey yet not overly large either. I will definitely go back to watch the Highland Park crowd. Keep it up!

Pros: Carbone's has a nice, casual feel and a very attentive, friendly staff. The food was quite good (I sampled crab, bread with burrata, and eggplant parmesan). Eggplant parmesan is often overly greasy, overly cheesy and generally lacking in true eggplant and tomato flavors. This eggplant parm, however, was a thing of beauty; not oily, normal portion, bright flavors. Cons: The burrata was a little heavy on the garlic, which gave it a bitter finish. The wine list is quite disappointing, and I was disappointed to see the wine served in the same little OJ glasses you get when you order a Grand Slam at Denny's. The biggest disappointment, however, was the cost. The food, while excellent, is overpriced. I love the fact that they serve modest portions, because I can't stand Italian restaurants that serve you three cups of pasta with every meal. However, I didn't get $50 worth of awesome--sorry Carbone's.

What a nice surprise! I really wasn't sure what to expect, but should have known it would be good since the group from Nonna opened Carbone's. The meatball sandwich was very good, the staff was extremely helpful and let us try a few things first and the atmosphere was really nice. I am intrigued to try the prix fixe dinner...sounds incredible!

Everybody has their perception of what they believe to be 'Italian' food. This place does a very good job, considering they just opened. They have GREAT POTENTIAL. To try and relate this shop with any other within the Dallas market is unfair and impossible. Now, to put it up against some of the heavy's in other major metropolitan areas, sure, this place maybe a little weak, but it will grow into itself. Thank you for Opening. Great Italian Creme Cake it is The Real Deal.

Please visit this place before it's totally taken over by Highland Park! During my first visit here, our group had a lot of trouble making decisions, so we ended up trying one of almost every vegetarian item on the menu and sharing everything. Everything we ate was delicious, but the highlights were: Panzanella with Burrata - a salad made with bread, tomatoes, and burrata (a delicious cream-filled mozzarella) Tomato, cheese, and spinach lasagna - delicious Tomato basil soup - I know a lot of restaurants have some variation on this, but few are this good (sadly, my daughter didn't let us share this one as equally as some of the other items) Cannoli - don't leave without trying it! Although, it's a bit pricey, the order-at-the-counter setup and the decor keep the vibe very casual. The only reason I had to take off a star is that it was filled with Highland Park types. Please - let's get some real people in here before it's completely taken over!

Great food, but a bit pricey for lunch. This is a much better choice for dinner.
(3)Bailey H.
Carbone's is one of my favorite restaurant in Dallas. All of the sandwiches are delicious- my favorite is the Cuban Panini and the Cesar Salad combo. The location and space is fun and relaxing. One of the best restaurants in Dallas.
(5)Lisa M.
Great atmosphere and food but utterly incompetent front of the house operations and service. Give them a pass except for Takeaway for another year. I left frustrated and angry that i had to pay more than $60 for 2 salads, garlic bread, and 1 glass of wine and horrendous confusion between the army of of untrained staff.
(1)lisa s.
I'll start out by saying Carbone's uses fresh, incredible tasting ingredients that I really appreciate. The food tasted awesome. However, it is very expensive for such small portions! $16 eggplant parmesan - delicious, but we got 1 small piece of eggplant with no pasta or sides ?? The girl we ordered said the salad would feed two - it was enough for one. The main reason I went is for some pasta! The garlic bread was OMG good, but again, 4 small pieces? I can't say for sure I'll be back. We ordered this food as take out and ended up heating up some left overs because we were still hungry, even though we had just spent $70 on dinner :(
(3)Perry P.
Been three times since opening - twice for lunch and once for dinner. The food is 5-star in my book - but there are some kinks to work out: the service and set-up seem inefficient, the staff are nice but seem inexperienced, the hours are a little odd and the food is a little pricey. Perhaps they'll pull it together in the coming weeks.
(3)Lynn D.
Great authentic Italian - $10 for soup and hoagie - I will definitely return for the handmade pasta.
(5)Jeff S.
I was starting to wonder if this place was ever going to open. It was so worth the wait. Ran in the other night and grabbed some food to go. started with the tomato basil soup. It was quite possibly one of the best I have ever had. It was well complimented by the side of garlic cheese bread. For my entree I had the linguini bolognese. The pasta was fresh and cooked perfectly. My only complaint was that it was kinda greasy. Thankfully I decided to grab dessert. The cannoli was amazing. This is definatly not an every night stop in like eatzi's as it was really expensive. However, it was totally worth it.

Great food and atmosphere....not too loud and great service!

My wife, son, and I recently went here for lunch after reading all the hype from Leslie Brenner and some other media outlets. We got there right at noon on a Tuesday. The first thing I noticed was butcher paper serving as window treatments, which I'm hoping is only temporary. Inside a former women's clothing store, the interior is quite spacious. There's a counter for ordering meals, a deli counter for cheeses, meats, etc., a refrigerated area with pastas and sauces to go, and some displays with dried pastas, olive oils, etc, and then a wine area. The stuff behind the deli counter looked great, but I think they need more selection on the dried grocery goods. There wasn't a whole lot of selection really. I did like the quality of everything on hand. We were able to go right up to the counter. Having a kid with me, I asked if there were any kid's items. I was told no....so I had to order a $10 panini for a four year old. It was a really tasty prosciutto panini, but $10 is pretty steep for a kid's sandwich. It came with a few chips on the side. My wife and I both love meatball sandwiches, and for us, the standard for excellence is Jimmy's. The big meatballs, with the marinara, oozing mozzarella, topped with onions and bell peppers on a hot fresh bun is my favorite sandwich in Dallas by far. I read all about the process that Carbone's goes through to make their all pork meatballs. The meatballs, buffalo mozzarella, and marinara on a lightly toasted bun were really good....but, not as good as Jimmy's for either of us. And at $10, it's $4 more than what you pay at Jimmy's. And I was pretty disappointed that potato chips are the only thing I could get as a side. Overall, I like the place and I will certainly return. I would definitely like to try the Sunday night dinner soon. I understand that they are in a high rent space, but I would say the sandwiches and lunch entrees are a bit on the steep side. If I'm paying $10 for a sandwich, it really should come with something besides potato chips. I understand the quality of the ingredients and the time it takes to make meatballs, but chips are a give-up. Also, I know it's more of a restaurant for adults, but it's in Highland Park where there are a ton of families. They really needs some kid items on there (unless the objective is to push families away from the place).

$$$$$ Despite all the promising hype this restaurant has received, for the serious Dallas diner-out it's just another entry into the growing Dallas wanna-be's diary entitled "we'll eat anywhere as long as we can be seen with seemingly cool rich people" (just like Cafe Pacific or more accurately Cafe Pathetic)...and if you're going to Carbone's for this, to see and be seen, you will not be disappointed. This is sister restaurant to Nonna's in Highland Park but alas the ugly stepsister. I've eaten here several times to give them a chance and they've never gotten better. The grouper I had most recently could be smelled--like a bucket of old bait--as the waiter was walking to the table, the copious amount of thin sliced garlic did nothing to hide the festering smell of the old fish's carcass. It was horrible and one would think that freshness would be a no brainer for this self described purveyor of haut-funk cuisine. The persutto and melon was an amateurish combination of small cubes of cantaloupe and overaged, pungent, too thickly sliced perscutto...not balanced, not textured, not delicious, not very good. I was so hoping that the Tiramisu dessert would help save this almost $50.00 meal but alas it was served in a recycled screw top jar (Cracker Barrel chic) and was a lack luster, non espresso flavored, amalgamation of mascarpone and some small portion of a soggy ladyfinger...it left me wondering if this wasn't in fact a small Jiffy's jar of swirled peanut butter and jam.

Had dinner with two friends... all impressed. The food was terrific (just the right amount too... not too little, not too much), good service, nice environment (either dressy or casual would fit in well here), more than a fair price. Waiter was very helpful when making recommendations. Can't wait to go back and try more things on the menu.

A big disappointment for me. I want this place to be so much better! I love Nonna and was hoping this would be a casual, lower priced, take out place from the same people. Very limited menu and very expensive for what you get . Yes, it's Highland Park but does that mean it has to be overpriced? Apparently so. I ordered spaghetti and meat balls, lasagna, and a caprese salad to go.....$44? Yes the food was good but not that good. No thanks, I'll just go back to Eatzis for the same thing at (less than)1/2 the price. I must be in the minority though; countless HP housewives spending $100 for takeout for their family of four.

I happened in one Sunday and I am totally thrilled that I did. I was lucky enough to enjoy brunch and not have to deal with a crowd. The waitstaff was knowledgeable of the menu and very helpful. I enjoyed a seat next to the window, a great view of the dining space and occasional conversation with the staff. The bistro/deli/cafe intermix is refreshing. This casual setting and open floor plan lend to the full experience. I had the french toast w/zabaglione along with the ciccoli hash w/fried eggs over easy. The mix of savory and sweet were awesome. The french toast was such a treat with the fresh fruit cup and the soft yogurt creme. The hash allowed you to taste all of the flavors without overpowering my senses. It's my favorite. I look forward to bringing friends and family!

Carbone's is a full service casual dining Italian restaurant. Patrons have the option to dine-in or carry out. The restaurant is located in a strip shopping center with plenty of parking in the front and rear. During my visit I ordered a half meatball sandwich and tomato basil soup. The cost for the lunch portion is $11 + tax. The portion size was good for me. The flavors of the meatball sandwich with mozzarella cheese were the perfect companion to the soup. Service was prompt and courteous. It is a good environment for families, business meetings or grabbing a bite to eat alone.

First time having lunch here and I am impress by the food! Gosh! Service was very good as well. The ragyu lasagna practically melts in your mouth! I'm in love! It's so delicious! White bean soup was delicious as well. I love the bright atmosphere and staff was friendly+ helpful! I'd definitely return! RECOMMEND: Lasagna, sandwiches Tip: ASK for Bread -Free and delicious!

This was some seriously amazing Italian food. Three colleagues amd I dined here tonight, two of them were first generation Italians. They had the pasta with Sunday gravym another colleague had shrimp scampi, I had the Lasagna Ragu. Omg amazing! Everyone cleaned their plate. We also had the antipasto salad and garlic bread with homemade ricotta cheese. I could have just eaten a bowl of that cheese and been happy. Our server was friendly and knowledgeable. Definitely recommend if you come to Dallas.

It's been a while since my last review, and Carbones is as wonderful as ever!! We still go all the time for lunch and dinner. My favorite for lunch is the Italian Combo Sub- the meat is made in-house, you will never find a better sandwich! Their homemade chocolate cake is to die for! For dinner you cannot go wrong with any pasta. The executive chef Jonathan is a wizard with pasta, I've eaten every single pasta dish on the menu. The pastas change with the season- LOVE all the pasta. The quality at Carbones has not waivered since it opened.

I actually rate this 4 and a half stars. I understand the prior reviews about the price point for such a bistro/deli but in my opinion the food was so well cooked and prepared that I was content paying a little more. We also went at lunch so the price tag wasn't shocking Now this place is very casual. Kind of a deli crossed with a bistro so don't expect a dark romantic Italien restaurant. This is bright and open and airy. Also whilst the location is the edge of oak lawn it is also the edge of university park so the crowd during our visits was less diverse and trendy and more well heeled and conservative. Especially if you brunch on a Sunday right as the church there is letting out. The pasta dishes are very good. The little mowhawk macaroni with the"Sunday gravy" was amazing. I noticed afterwards that the deli section actually sells that Sunday gravy to go. I need this!! It is basically a mixed bag red meat sauce with pork, Italien sausage and veal.

Wow! I had a friend in town and she wanted lasagna. I've been to a few places but decided we'd both try somewhere new. I couldn't have picked a better place!!! Loooooved it! Service was excellent! Food was even better!!! My tomato, cheese, and spinach lasagna was superb. Melt in your mouth delicious! Probably one of the best lasagna I've had in a looooong time. My friend ordered the shrimp scampi and loved it and my niece had spaghetti and meatballs. She loved the meatballs particularly. A must go. Casual and nice! Loved it!
(5)Melissa G.
My husband and I ate here for the first time finally and were so impressed! Agree with the causal atmosphere, but it's a great romantic date night spot as well. Appetizer: Fried ravioli. Breading was flaky and light, Italian sausage inside was right amount of spicy. Entrees: I had the shrimp with linguine noodles. It tasted like the pasta was just made in the back! AMAZING. My husband had the sausage tortellini and ate every last bite. We will defiantly be back!

Great location, priced a little high per plate but definitely quant little place. Ask for Anna as your server, highly recommended. Great wine selection could use more than 4 beers to choose from. Flavor is good on apps and entrees but lacks variety. Maybe I'm much too Italian and picky but give this place a shot, it's worth at least that!

We visited this establishment after a close friend purchased us a $100 gift certificate and promised us the best Italian dining experience in Dallas. Let me therefore preface my review by admitting that we did NOT eat at the restaurant--though it did look cozy inside--opting instead to order out and bring the food home. Perhaps the prices include ambiance and location. Regardless of where it is--and how nice the place might seem to some--this restaurant is terribly overpriced and serves food that, at best, tasted pedestrian. We spent $115 (with a generous to-go tip included) on food that could fit into a single plastic shopping bag. What is more, had the food been in smaller containers, into which they would have easily for, they would have occupied half a shopping bag. In other words, do not expect anything resembling hearty portions at this place. You get small portions of home made pastas and meals that, unless you eat lots of sides and bread, will not leave you full. I ordered a piece of lasagna and, by the time I got it home twenty minutes later, could not believe how hard and dry the top was. The sauce used is good but not dynamite, and the cheese a bit on the sharper tasting side (which I like). Overall, I would give it maybe 3/5--nothing special, nothing terrible. But at nearly $20 for a tiny meal, I give it 1.5/5. At that price, lasagna should be delicious and hearty, and this was not. Since I had plenty of room to spare--and I am not a very heavy individual, mind you--I decided to eat at least some of the chicken parmisan sandwich I also purchased. The sandwich was pretty good. I enjoyed the texture of the bread, and the cutlet was flavorful. Similar to the lasagna, however, the sauce and cheese failed to impress. Again, the sandwich itself was quite small, coming in at between 5-6 inches, and the cost--around $15--makes purchasing it as a lunch time meal all but prohibitive. I would give this a 3.5/5 without price and a 2/5 with price taken into account. My wife also had a chicken parm sandwich, but she also had some pasta. She has linguini with shrimp scampi. She found the pasta sauce to be excessively oily and very disappointing. She would give 1.5/5. That is what she said. Sadly, the garlic bread was the best part of the meal. The homemade bread was crispy and flavorful, and the side of ricotta was a nice touch for those who love all things Italian. But delicious bread does not a meal make. We spent $100 and ate four "meals" in one sitting, without feeling stuffed. We did feel "satisfied." We will probably not eat here again. The staff is very friendly, the restaurant looks posh, but the food is simply not worthy of the sticker price. There are tons of Italian places in the area that have better food at a less expensive price.

I am a pasta SNOB. There are very few places that cook it correctly in this town. This place NAILED IT! Home made pasta cooked to a perfect al dente, the meatballs were a bit rubbery tho. The chopped antipasto salad was excellent.

My husband and I visited Carbone's a few weeks ago, and every time I drive by, I remember how disappointing it was. When we entered the restaurant, our first impression was that it is very small and VERY dim. Tables in the center of the restaurant have light over them, but all seating around the perimeter was extremely dark. Not in a romantic way. We also felt for the poor hostess, who has to stand behind a bedroom end table type stand. The poor girl needs a proper podium, where her purse isn't on display, and where she doesn't have to keep bending over for the items she frequently needs. Because the table is too low for her to even rest her hands on, she just awkwardly stood for the entire evening, trying to not eavesdrop on the guests who were a couple inches away. Why were we paying so much attention to the hostess? Service was slow for the entire night... Our server was a young male, who was happy to help us pick entrees off of the tiny menu. My husband ended up with spaghetti and meatballs, and I got the lasagna (which I get any time I can find one made without meat). There were no glasses of wine less than $10-$20 per glass, so we both just had water. Apparently, bottles of wine were 1/2 off that night, but our waiter didn't tell us when we asked about specials. Because the restaurant claims to be Italian, we were SO disappointed that no bread was given to us while we waited. A busser did bring us water, but when I flagged down our waiter to point out that a hair was in mine, the busser seemed rather annoyed. When he poured me a new glass, I decided not to point out that there as sauce on the rim of the glass, which I assume came from a dirty dish he had taken away from another table. I didn't want to be a hassle, so I didn't drink anything during dinner. I don't like to annoy food service employees. I don't want retaliation. Our meals took a pretty long time to come out, but we didn't complain. I was shy to admit to my husband that my lasagna wasn't very good. There were only 2 layers (it was VERY short), and I could only describe it as flavorless and soggy. My husband had a VERY large portion of spaghetti, but he described his meatballs the same way I described the lasagna: soggy and flavorless. He said they didn't seem to be seasoned, and the consistency implied they were microwaved. Had our waiter checked on us EVER, I actually would have let him know that we weren't pleased. Our busser did refill my husband's water (and offered us bread mid-meal, thank goodness), but our waiter kept his back to us-and all of his other tables-whenever he had a new guest. While the restaurant was full, the staff seemed to have a manageable amount of tables. Nobody was running around or too busy. When he eventually brought our check, he didn't notice or care that 2/3 or my lasagna had been uneaten, and that the majority of my husbands meatballs were untouched. We did not ask for the food to go. This was the first time in at least a decade that we tipped less than 20% (we only left 10%). I would never recommend this restaurant to anyone who enjoys food. Italian food is rather easy to find. I would visit a food court before returning to Carbone's.

I'm SHOCKED at the bad reviews on this page. Makes me lose faith in humanity... particularly for the lady complaining about the table placement being next a window and that it made her feel claustrophobic. Come on lady. This is the best reasonable Italian in the city... the Spaghetti & Meatballs are amazing. This is me and my wife's go to spot. I've never had a bad experience and will continue to visit it. My wife and I lived in Italy for a while and can say that this is the best italian we've had in Dallas, or the USA other than a few spots in New York... The key here is the pasta... they cook it to perfection. Perfect al dente every time. TRY IT. IGNORE THE BAD REVIEWS BECAUSE THEY ARE INACCURATE.
(5)Kye K.
Cute place, a bit bare boned interior-wise. Reminded me of a kitchen. Great service, vegetable lasagna was good, beet salad wasn't too bad. Went for dinner, but it would be more ideal for lunch. Pricey, but considering the area, I'm sure it's the norm. I would definitely go back for a quick fancy but not pretentious meal.
(4)Nate S.
I might have given it 3 stars, but after spending 34 bucks on 2 OK dishes, it gets 2 stars. I had the rigatoni with rabbit cacciatore, and I had high hopes for it, but it fell flat. My wife had spaghettini and meatballs, which was good, but nothing outstanding. It's too bad too since I was really looking forward to trying this place based on other reviews I've read. I can't see myself going back.
(2)Chowser S.
Dallas needs home style Italian, it disappeared when Tarrantino's and Alessio's went away. Carbone's helps fill the void. The vegetables are exceptional and the fresh pasta is excellent.
(4)JJ P.
I went in expecting Carbone's to be another mediocre phony 1/2 assed Italian restaurant that Dallas is infamous for. I was completely wrong. Carbone's is exactly what Dallas needs more of-old world recipes done with artisanal flair/great ingredients by people who get it and care about it. We had many dishes from appetizers to salads to several pastas and entrees to dessert with all being superb. We really appreciate that Carbone's is not a "scene" and doesn't try to be "Oak Cliff hipster" or "Uptown vapid chic". Hoping that Carbone's will keep doing what they're doing because its a winner in sea of Dallas losers.

Service was wonderful, despite what the other reviews have said. Perhaps the restaurant saw these reviews and have improved since. I got the Ravioli w/ Italian Sausage - it was amazing. The portion size was definitely generous. I only ate half and brought the other half home. My husband got the Snapper and it was charbroiled to perfection. Wonderfully cooked and so moist over spinach. We also got the calamari, wedge salad, and beet salad. Everything was amazing. The bread is also perfect. We had such a wonderful dinner, even with our 13 month daughter. The restaurant was so accommodating, they only charged us half price for the spagetti and meatballs for her. We will definitely be back for the food and ambiance. We got there around 5:45pm, and by the time we were done, there were people waiting at the door and some even leaving b/c it was packed. They can definitely add more tables to the back where those shelf displays are. The layout and ambiance reminds me of San Francisco - contemporary, great food, and good service. In total, 3 appetizer, 2 generous sized entree, 1 kid's meal, 1 glass of wine, and 1 soda came to $99 total. That's not bad at all for great food in Highland Park.
