My experience at Ascension was just okay. Maybe I visited at the wrong time. I came on a warm Friday afternoon, I'd gotten off of work a little early and was hankering for a cold brew, so I decided to give them a try. First of all, parking is a nightmare. If you're not willing to valet park (and I'm usually not, because I hardly ever have cash on me and I don't want to subject the valet to driving my car if I can't tip them) then be prepared to circle the block over and over looking for viable street parking. I lucked out and found a spot on my third time around. Once I got inside, I could see that the place is popular! It's a cute little place, smartly decorated, and you have the option of grabbing a menu and seating yourself for table service or ordering at the counter. Since I was just coming in for a coffee, I ordered at the counter. The staff was quite polite. I ordered the cold brew with some almond milk. They served it to me in a pint glass with a red straw, without the almond milk, and then pulled a carton of Pacific brand almond milk out of the fridge and said I could put it in myself. I had to take a few long sips of the full glass of coffee in order to make room, and the flavor was very odd. Sort of sweet, not very strong. I poured in a generous amount of almond milk, and it sort of congealed in the coffee, which I've never seen almond milk do before. I took my coffee outside and sat on the patio, which has a view of the parking lot and Oak Lawn ave. Neither the patio nor the interior seating area is very conducive to reading or getting any work done, since both are fairly loud. It's a good place to visit with friends, though. Ultimately, I give them points for a cool space and a friendly staff, but take some away for terrible parking and odd coffee (at least the one I had). I'd like to try their food sometime, and come back on a less hectic afternoon. It's such a popular place, I feel like I must just be missing something.

Amazing!! I've wanted to come to try something other than Starbucks. Ordered the cappuccino. Life changer!!!! Rich, smooth and not a single hint of bitterness. Goodbye Starbucks!

Hmmm... I was expecting more. Went here yesterday around 3pm after our brunch at Meddlesome Moth next door with our laptops to get a couple hours of work done. We came in and a server came up to us and gave us a menu and two glasses and a bottle of water. I think it is cool that they have these red bottles full of water for each table so you can refill on your own. Anyways, this waiter seemed like he was in a hurry and didn't want to work and then said that he was leaving soon but would still help us. For the next 30 minutes we saw him walking around avoiding customers and basically just counting down the time until he had to leave. So for 30 minutes no one came to ask us what we wanted. There was one other waiter only and he was waiting on everyone. Needless to say they needed one more person out on the floor taking orders. The other waiter finally came up to us to ask what we wanted after getting orders for three tables that came after us. I was pretty turned off because everyone in the restaurant was helped except us and I am still trying to figure out why. The only thing I can think of was because we were Indian (brown) and perhaps they assumed we weren't going to spend any money and just work? That was the vibe I got. Anyway, my friend ordered two espressos and a coffee, based on the server's recommendation and I ordered a chai tea latte. The latte was good but it was not hot, just lukewarm. The espressos were ok (i don't drink espresso but tasted my friends). The waiter must have realized I was not feeling the service also because when he took our initial order, he told us about the owner of the shop and that they own coffee farms in different countries that they source the beans from. It was informative info but really I just want attentive service and to not be ignored. Anywho, the interior is neat and it has an Austin-y feel and there's also a patio which is cool. I might be back to give them another chance to update my review and add a star. Ok cool bye!

Perfect place to get work done on a Friday afternoon/evening. Excellent coffee. Pretty good smoked salmon too, smoked in house. The good natured folk who work here seem quite invested in the space, products, and atmosphere; although, speed isn't part of this coffee house culture---quality, enjoyment do not mean haste. After you get work done, linger awhile after the sun goes down, try the wine.

Emanating an obvious hipster vibe, brewed with a sense of classiness, Ascension Coffee easily becomes a favorite excuse to trek up to the Design District (for me at least). Fantastic, better alternative to studying at Starbucks or a great place to grab coffee and a bite with a couple friends/businesspeeps! Coffee: The lattes are great! Pretty concentrated coffee for some people, so don't be afraid to ask for less if it's too strong for ya! The baristas and staff here are friendly, attentive, and prioritize to meet the needs of their customers. They cool! Studies/Wifi: Ascension provides plenty of tables inside, out on the patio, and some seats at the bar with two wifi routers to satisfy the diligent student or blogger. (The wifi passwords are at top of the main column.) This place is the perfect study spot particularly during the day up until evening due to the natural ambience, but the lights dim as soon as the sun goes down so expect it to be pretty dark! Food: The cast iron salmon is definitely worth the bang for your buck! It sides with a small vinaigrette salad and some amazing roasted garlic potatoes. Yeah. Those potatoes.. so good. The vinaigrette on the salad seemed a bit heavy, but that may just be me. The potato leek soup is a good option if you need something light and satisfying! Small bits of chicken inside and showered with black pepper on top. May wanna get this and Teeni Panini (half portion of a panini). The salmon BLT is packed with mouth-watering goodness.. Wow, actually salivating writing this lol. I'll have to come back soon! The chocolate cake..Holy moly.. Although it comes out in what looks like a small cup, the warm, moist cake is topped with vanilla ice cream and dressed with berries. Always a good mix. Music: Really love the fact that Ascension tries their best to host musicians every Friday/Saturday if they can, which definitely adds to the already hipster nature of this coffee shop. Music lovers will not be disappointed on those nights! In summary: If you need a good place to be productive or just have a coffee fix, go grab yourself a cup o joe!

I can't believe I only just discovered this gem. It almost makes me want to move out of the burbs into downtown. Almost. This is review for brunch. My advice is to come early b/c there will be a wait and it does get crowded. Also expect a super trendy crowd. The smoked salmon hash is AWESOME. So is their iced chai latte - it was so unique, I totally loved it and ordered 2 large glasses. It has a spicy ginger after taste. They also resell Val's Cheesecakes, which are bite sized cheesecakes that are yummy (but a little pricey)

This review will be short and sweet. Coffee. Yum. Delicious. Made with care. If you like coffee, this place is going to take care of you. Venue. Hip. Cool. Modern yet not overdone. Fun art on the wall, a large table in the back for people who want to have a coffee and meet. The patio is fantastic. This place is just flat out well executed. Food. I had the mozzarella / cheese panini with pesto and a side salad. It was hot, and delicious. Service. The barista was friendly. Everyone was smiling. Out waitress was attentive. Summary. Ascension Coffee firing on all cylinders. This is not a long review because there is not much to say other than get your ass over there and experience it for yourself! Terrific!
