I love this bar. Great atmosphere, great food and friendly staff. That patio is really awesome. We took the train there which drops you off a block away. Perfect. Fun.

Dammit, I want that koozie!!! Owned, operated, and ran by a bunch of ex and current skateboarders, the Yellow Jacket Social Club can be slow to get the food out the door when things get busy, but when the food comes, it's worth the wait. I had the frittata of the day, which included some bevy of veggies I can't even remember, and was fantastic at only $7. Everyone else, three people to be exact, ordered the shrimp and grits, but I wasn't quite in the mood to plunk down $11 for the order. It's apparently the most killer thing on the menu, and everyone devoured theirs. If I went back, I would try it. The price has apparently risen from $7-8 to $11 in the past year though, as demand has grown and yuppies have begun to frequent the place. There is also a very lively late night scene here, with all kinds of cool folks hanging around, and at least one, sometimes two, outside bars. A firepit to boot. The outdoor area is huge, which definitely makes up for the admittedly closed quarters indoors. The vibe indoors is really rustic, which is fun, but if the weather is good, you'll probably want to be outside. I came here 2-3 times during my stay, and if I lived in Austin, I think it would be a regular hangout. I want that koozie! Edit: I should mention that one of the co-owners took care of us inside the bar during brunch (although someone from the kitchen ran the food out). His service was absolutely perfect and he was quite charming. If you're some snotty fart, you might have an issue with things like comments about being hungover, but if you've done your time in the service industry, or aren't a tool, you know this comes with the territory. He went out of his way to make us coffee (at no charge) as well.

This place is hella suave. Hipsters, Lesbians, Mexicans, Bumouts, inkedup folk ... all makes and models were up in this joint. Laid back atmosphere and good beer on tap and the food spread was delicious. I drove from North Austin to check out this joint and even with traffic, it was worth the drive. Thanks to the great and personable bar service.. you made my experience all the more better. I'll be back ...

Bloody Mary. Bloody Mary. Bloody Mar... J/K, guys. J/K. My friends and I had some time to spare after brunch and before a wedding ceremony, so we hit the Yellow Jacket Social Club for some daytime refreshments. We had some delicious tomato-y, tabasco-y stuff on the Yellow Jacket Social Club patio. They put beer and okra in it. Respect. We ordered three Bloody Marys from the nice bartender and it was $12. TWELVE. I love Austin. Just watch out for bird excrement if you're outside. We were getting bombed in the worst possible way and had to move tables.

Oh, Austin, you are so good to your peeps. The Yellow Jacket Social Club is a new discovery for me. Their beet sandwich is out of this world. And their roasted sweet potato wedges - the perfect pairing for my IPA. The servers don't smile much, but the eye candy can be very good, so what does it matter? Lovely outdoor seating area. This place has a high hipster quotient. So, beware, if that is an issue for you. It shouldn't be. But, if it is, I say get over it and remind yourself that you are there for the food. The food!!!

Tasty brunch with not a lot of frills. We got a mimosa bucket (a bottle of champagne and 2 little cans of O.J.) - good amount to share among 3 people, but could've used better orange juice. I guess the focus is on the booze, which I can get on board with. I got the pork belly, and holy hell was there a lot of it. If that's your thing, I recommend it; it's rubbed in brown sugar and has an amazing, rich flavor. I heard good things about the French toast and tried The Mister (basically a croque monsieur) - also good, but really heavy. Sitting outside was wonderful, but you have to be prepared to shield your food from flies. Great casual atmosphere and very reasonable prices.

Brunch o' clock. Shrimp and grits were perfect and mimosas were flowing. Great people watching and attentive service. I'll be back for sure.

I don't know who created this place with the lay-out and food and drink menu but that person Gets It. Okay, okay so it doesn't hurt that my high school mascot was the Fighting Yellow Jackets. The selection of stuff on the menu is awesome; example: Cuban beef sandwich with fresh onions yes please! My friend Amy D. was with me at this late Saturday night stop and she was how do you say it...under the influence. They brought the large, bulky sandwich out wrapped in a brown paper wrapping. "It looks like a baby!!" Amy D. squealed. I unfolded the wrapping and the thick sandwich came tumbling out. "You are about to eat a baby!!" Amy D. squealed again. Ohmygawd I was about to eat a baby!! No wait...just a very delicious beef sandwich. They have a late night menu that is different from the regular hour menu. They serve up stuff that would make Sir Mix-A-Lot proud like Red Beans and Rice. When waiting for your order you don't just get a boring number card either you get a vintage playing card with a nude woman. Only in Austin! Their prices are affordable, they have an amazing outdoor patio that goes and goes and goes, they have friendly staff, they offer brunch on Sunday, they have tree coverage, they are sort of tucked away on the East side of 5th street: this is my new favorite place in East Austin for sure.

This place suffers from over-priced food and drinks, non-existent parking, and an interior that smells a lot like a combination of body odor and mildew. I felt kind of sick from the smell when we left. There are plenty of affordable places just like this in east Austin that don't smell bad and are convenient to park at. Try any one of the other ones.

we went for brunch on a sunday and weren't drinking alcohol so maybe that's where we messed up. We were HUNGRY as it was lunch/brunch time and we hadn't eaten. Went to the bar and ordered. wanted juice, they served canned juice, yuck. I got the French toast and bacon, it was tasty but not filling. it was a beautiful day so was nice seating outside, parking was easy. the folks around drinking looked happy as larks... we were still hungry when we left.

I can tell why this place has such solid reviews: it's cute, comfy, friendly, and 'hip,' whatever that means. I came here with a friend for some Friday afternoon drinks, expecting it to be all hustle bustle due to the day and time (happy hour). Refreshingly, that was far from the case! I walked in and the bartenders were very prompt and friendly, which is more than you can get from most of the other trendy bars in Austin. They make a good, reasonably priced drink, and they have a nice selection of local beers on tap. Try the Greyhound if it's warm, nice and citrusy and suuummerryy. AND they don't charge for opening a tab! Hooray! The only negative takeaway I have from this place was how difficult it was to find. Maybe it wasn't difficult and I just felt hesitant driving down 5th street (it's WEIRD okay?!). Granted, I've only been here once, but it was enough for me to warrant a 5 star review. I can't wait to come back and try the food!

I went to the Yellow Jacket Social Club earlier this week and was very impressed. Not only can you get a nice $60 bottle of wine, but you can also get a cheap White Trash tall boy for the nights you're on a serious budget. The space used to be Cafe Mundi, but they have completely remodeled it and claimed it as their own space. It's slightly off the beaten track from the over saturated E. 6th, but still accessible, if you are in that area. I had just eaten, so I didn't try any food while I was there, but the menu was filled will creative dishes and sandwiches that were mostly priced $10 and under. I had a lengthy conversation with Mimi Rose, one of the space's proprietors, and she told me that most of the materials they used in the remodel were recycled. In fact, the metal panels used in the outdoor fencing came from a local dismantled skater ramp. The patio is dog friendly, so be sure to swing by and get some dinner and a drink with your 4 legged friend!

I've been coming here almost every weekend since they started serving brunch! YJSC is amazing. Also, to everyone who complains about "the hipsters" who eat & drink here, you're jus jealous that you don't look as good as we do. Feel free to eat, I dunno, in Lakeway or wherever it is that you eat where people wear khaki shorts and flip-flops. PROTIP: if you get the tofu scramble, ask them to add extra nutritional yeast, and if you're getting Mimosas, go ahead and get the Bucket.

Great bar! Great patio! I always have fun here and always want to drink here when I'm on the East Side. The staff is always great, friendly, quick service and willing to chat it up a bit- yay! Great spot for your hipster people watching and great atmosphere at night when the trees are lit up. Twinkle, Twinkle little star how I love you Yellow Jacket yes you are cool. Ok, so you get my point. Great beer selection and some good food- I don't eat meat but the cheese plate is tasty and great. How many times did I say great?

Location: Easy to miss spot on E 5th (look for Tamale House sign), designated parking lot more secure than street parking. Staff: Very attentive, but not over-imposing. Drinks: Full bar. Great local beer selection, mimosas for brunch. Food: (1) Pork Belly $9 - brown sugar and spice rubbed belly with over easy egg on hash cake. Clarify you want your egg cooked over easy (ours was served over medium). Pork is delicious, crispy, well seasoned - must have. (2) Shrimp & Grits $9 - shrimp sautéed in savory butter sauce bacon, spinach, over grits. Good traditional S&G, stay away if you don't do spicy! Ambiance: A little divey (in the best way!) ... Seating is 95% outdoors at picnic tables. Indoor seating is extremely limited (5ish 2 seater tables, 8-10 seat bar). Do not go unless you want to sit outside. Order your drinks and food at the bar when you arrive, start your tab, then grab your seat.

So glad this place is right down the street from me....love the outside seating area, very warm and inviting. And its not obnoxious or overly loud, even when they have live music happening....overall a great experience for anyone. My girl and I need to try out the brunch, cant wait!

I have only been here twice. Once when it first opened and once a couple days ago. Both times it smelled like a zoo. You know the smell... that stale, yet fresh, scent of manure mixed with dirt and animals (and we all know those animals could very well be some of you hipsters). The smell was so reminiscent of a zoo, that at one point, I actually started looking for those pellet machines so I could get the goats a snack. If this is going to be a place you can bring your dirty dog or smelly one-night-stand, employees could at least make sure to check for sh!t on the ground while bussing tables. And don't tell me it's the location because Cafe Mundi never smelled like a zoo.

Cute little spot on the east side. Nothing special, and honestly there were a ton of flies in the outdoor area, but that could have been a one-time thing as it rained that night. But mmm the $5 watermelon margarita is yummy!

  • Tanna A.

Awesome place! Great for dogs, great food, great service. I have 1 complaint: There are too many open trash cans placed on the patio area. The flies are hulatious! They're adult flies so I tend to believe that it's possible these trash cans do not get dumped every night. Flies are to be expected, but there are swarms of them. Fix the trash and fly issue and I give this place all 5 stars!

One of my favorite places in Austin. It is definitely a must when i visit and you can't go wrong with their frito pies! With plenty of outdoor seating, it's a great place to hang out with lots of friends and your furry companions as well.

Bomb ass Beet-Sandwich. Go for that if nothing else...although the place is pretty chill and I enjoyed it. Ride your bike here. Cheap beer. bad smell outside but its not their fault, i think it is next to an old feed mill.

Came here on a Sunday for brunch, Easter to be exact. This place definitely defines the new East Austin scene. I felt like I was in an episode of Portlandia. Love it. While I may be viewed as a yuppie by the majority of people that go here, I appreciate the environment for what it's worth. When you arrive, be prepared to get into vulture mode. There are no reservations, no wait lists, it's a free for all. If you want to order food, you have to go to the bar and place your order. You will be given a number and the food will be brought to you. You could wait up to an hour after your food is placed (granted it was Easter). There is few indoor seating and plenty of outdoor picnic tables shaded by trees. While waiting for the food there was a game of bingo going on with prizes that was entertaining. Our table had shrimp and grits, fritata, and the mister. Everyone cleaned their plates up and left satisfied. The largest portioned food was definitely the mister. The mister is a huge sandwich with ham and gruyere topped with an egg and some fancy sauce that looks like gravy. The shrimp and grits were very tasty, the shrimp was well seasoned and cooked to perfection. I didn't try the frittata but was told that it was tasty. From the bar the bloody mary was awesome! The drink came garnished with a tasty olive, pickled okra and a banana pepper. Also had a marg which was yuck! This place is worth checking out if you are looking for a something different.

Hipstery, schmipstery; this place is delicious. We had the hummus plate (fresh and with plenty of accoutrements) and the sweet potato fries (very tasty), and then the chef (all tatted up) brought us some new menu items he was working on (on the house!). Baked goat cheese with handmade tomato sauce, pickled red onion and greens on toast points: damn it, man, that was delectable. And then jambalaya from the owner's N.O. recipe was magnificent, and I used to live there. All that deliciousness, and the bartendress was super sweet (and cute, to boot), means I'm telling my friends to go check it out. Yay brunch, yay morning drinks.

My friends are hipsters. And I love them for it. I'm pretty sure however, that I wouldn't be classified as one. That being said, this place is a hangout for the new young generation of folks that ride bikes, wear stripes and have tattoos (hey, I have tattoos...). Drinks are awesome. Bloody Mary's are a must at brunch. We all gathered one sunny sunday morning and man and I had the steak and eggs special served with pinto beans and a potato cake. All was incredibly amazingly delicious. Sure, there does exist a dumpster smell at this establishment occasionally, but i think it has more to do with the fact that their dumpster is unfortunately placed near the driveway. If you are uptight, don't go here. You won't get along with anyone here. Love the picnic tables and the atmosphere outside. Dog friendly establishment which is wonderful! Oh, and the beans and rice are incredible. Love you yeller jacky!

Brunch is my favorite meal of the week. This is my favorite brunch place. It is affordable and the short menu is amazing. Great drinks and great atmosphere. It is a true east Austin gem. Don't tell too many people about it! I don't want it getting overcrowded due to its awesomeness.

I went here with five others for Brunch. I had read rave reviews about this place, especially their brunch quality. Unfortunately, I didn't have the best experience. Maybe it's not 'my scene', or they were having a slow Sunday, but nothing about this place really 'wow'ed me like many other east Austin places I've explored. Having a rather small, bar-like interior, we decided to go sit outside and enjoy the nice weather Austin was having. There wasn't many people there so we had the freedom to get any picnic table we wanted. However, in two separate places, far apart, there was this faint stench of trash that none of us could ignore. Luckily, no one had told us that we needed to order our food at the bar, so no one came by for a few minutes, giving us ample time to decide to move back inside, to the one large table they have in the corner. We ordered our food, one-by-one with the Bartender. French Toast here, Shrimp and Grits there...Fresh Squeezed orange juice..beer. The place got a bit busier, however within 20 minutes or so, one of us got our food. Five minutes later, someone else got their food (same plate), 10 minutes later, another place, and so on. I was the last one to get my food, almost an hour after ordering. I had ordered the Shrimp and Grits, a simple dish, however considering my that friend, who ordered the same thing, got his 15 minutes earlier, I was pretty disappointed. The food was alright, good quality shrimp, well cooked, standard grits. However, my plate was priced at around $11, and the quantity was tiny. Everything else looked alright, although everyone at the table was a bit disappointed in how little food you get for the price. This was no Fabi + Rosi. We're sitting in a junky looking bar populated by skinny-pants bearded hipsters, service isn't great, and food was alright. Price was a bit high for what you'd expect to get. It felt like eating at an overpriced trailer that happened to be inside. There were no apologies about the tardiness, I got harassed by the bartender for failing to realize that there was espresso at the bar, rather than their coffee in a dispenser, and the food was too expensive. Overall, I was really disappointed, which doesn't happen often.

I sip my whiskey and topo chico in the jungle. YES, the jungle! Oh... no? Just a hipster hideaway with lots of greenery on the Eastside? Whatever, I'm still happy. Like most of the bars in this area, prices are reasonable, atmosphere is laid back, and patio space is ample. Unlike most bars in the area, the aesthetics are nice. While still maintaining dive bar status, Yellow Jacket Social Club presents one to you while still pleasing the eye. That, my friends, I am down with.

  • H. H.

This little dive bar has a pretty darn good brunch menu. I came here with my mom last weekend and shared The Mister (one delicious and huge sandwich), the french toast (so sweet, just like a cinnamon bun), and the pork belly (great if you like gnawing on a HUGE piece of flavorful fat). Seriously, the pork belly is very questionable. I can't imagine that anyone likes just snacking on a big lump of fat, but I guess they do. I loved the flavor, but the texture and the content was kind of vom inducing. The mimosas were tasty and cheap, the bar staff nice, and the atmosphere was very relaxed. Dogs are welcome! It was a bit pricy for the atmosphere, which may put some people off, but the food was nice. I would suggest that they get some fly traps though, it's not fun eating your $50 brunch with a herd of nasty bugs flying and threatening your food with their poo covered feet.

This place is really hip and the patio is very enjoyable. The food is great too - I had the adult grilled cheese. I need to go back for brunch.

One lunch time + one drankin' time = two GREAT experiences at YJSC. I got the Beet sandwich and some sweet potato wedges both times, and I was mighty happy with my decision both times. It's just. so. good. I mean, who doesn't love BEETS? Well, I'm sure most people, but this sandwich is creative enough to make you forget your disdain or mistrust of beets. The chevre compliments the bite of arugula perfectly, and the bread is toasted to ultimate perfection. They even serve everything on the cutest plates, making my angelic little (actually not little, HUGE) sandwich look fit for the gods. The inside looks like a bar, and I did feel mildly shameful walking into what looks exclusively like a bar in the middle of the day in my business casual attire, but it was worth it. They have a phenomenally huge patio area that also looks amazing, although I have yet to experience it. Maybe next time!

*BRUNCH REVIEW* Hm. Do they get more stars for doing better than expected, or fewer stars for just being - meh? I'm going with two because there were a lot of drawbacks here. My friends and I went for brunch because of the good Yelp rating, the non-North Austin location (full disclosure, I work a few east-side streets away), and the rad name. Not good: -Leftover beer AND vomit smells from the night before. Outside. This drew flies. -Incredibly long wait time after making our orders at the bar. Some of us had the same dish, though they came out ~15 min apart from each other. -General feeling of unkemptness in the dining areas. Not too sure I would want to see the kitchen unless.. unless it's all a front. Is it? Can it be so? Pretty good: -Shrimp n' grits - Shrimp that weren't overcooked on the East Side. Nicely done. -The food in general was made with care, nice ingredients, but we still paid downtown prices. Y'all ain't got a downtown locale. -Parking! So much free parking. If I could give 2.5 stars I would - 2 doesn't feel fair, but brunch hasn't hit 3.

Wow. This place rocks! I've been looking for a place like this- reasonably priced, cute, laidback, and enjoyable. They had a smallish but adequate selection of brews on tap along with a fairly extensive selection of bottled beers. We got beers and picked up a small plate special (baked goat cheese- yum!) to accompany our drinks and afternoon conversation. It was perfect. I enjoyed the outdoor seating and the trees overhead offered plenty of shade from the hot sun. I really appreciated the diversity of the patrons. It was a Saturday afternoon and there was a little bit of everyone out that afternoon. I totally did not get that exclusive "vibe" that some bars around town have where you get treated subpar and looked at glaringly if you don't fit the "type". For some reason I kinda expected that from this place... Maybe because many reviews comment on all the hipsters (like it caused a negative experience...?). I totally didn't pick up on that. It was extremely laid back and no one seemed concerned with anyone else. Everyone just had the same goal: sit around and kick it with friends while drinking good beer and enjoying the slightly cooler weather. Did I mention that it was perfect?? Because it was.

Hot-damn those sandwiches are good. I crave them from time to time. They are HUGE and worth the seemingly high price for a grilled cheese, etc. But let me tell you, these aren't ye olde sandwiches. I love the pickled side items and sauces - very interesting combinations. This place puts other pressed sandwiches in Austin to shame. I have had brunch here on a couple of occasions and enjoyed that as well. I think brunch-wise, YJSC is an Austin secret hot-spot. The patio is great for Sundays. Bar-wise, the drinks are decently priced and I like the bartenders. The two guys I have talked to behind the bar were funny and made my drink quickly - but the bar is small for the crowd this place can draw on a weekend. Only con towards YJSC: There is an awful stench outside every now and then (subjective).

I loved this place! Went here after a Stubb's show the other night and it definitely knew how to hit the spot. Our group ordered a lot of food and everything was delicious. Especially the sweet potatoes. And the seasoned saltines (who knew) and the mini grilled cheeses and the frito pie and the salami sandwich. Ok ok, maybe that is everything we ordered and maybe I just gave away that I had atleast a bite of everything. It was just that delicious. Great night time atmosphere, too. I just wish I would have shopped in the "Old Clothes" trailer out front. Next time, for sure.

My husband and I went to YJSC for lunch. The beet sandwich was amazing! They even nixed the cheese and replaced it with hummus for me. Saint Arnolds root beer to boot! Love the atmosphere and the owners--very friendly and down to earth. YJSC is super dog friendly and even hosts events for local animal rescue groups. This is a great place for grown ass folks to have a beer and hang with friends away from the BS of downtown. Plus, it has a parking lot. I can't wait to go back for brunch or a late night drink with some friends.

Is it just me or is there a new formula for naming bars? The formula goes a little something like this ... Color + Article of Clothing + Social Club = bar name Violet + Crown + Social Club = Violet Crown Social Club Yellow + Jacket + Social Club = Yellow Jacket Social Club Feel free to try this at home. But when you decide it's time to go out, make sure you stop by Yellow Jacket Social Club. Yellow Jacket is tucked away in the space formerly occupied by Cafe Mundi -- may the bricks and mortar version of Cafe Mundi RIP as its trailer comes to life. And if I do say so myself, I like what they've done with the place. It's dark but not a cave, laid back but not boring, and has a good drink selection that's not overwhelming. If you're hungry, there are many options. The (grilled) ham and gruyere sandwich is a real crowd-pleaser. The mustard on the side is a pleasing accompaniment. The cole slaw sounded better than it tasted ... I'm not one to shy away from strong flavor, but that cole-slaw packs a pungent punch. While I would recommend that they re-engineer this recipe, the truth is that no one goes to bars to eat cole slaw. This brings me to the next topic: Atmosphere. Specifically, patio atmosphere. I really liked it on my first visit. With a number of tables are tucked away under the trees and a few booths on the porch, there is a variety of outdoor seating. There is an outdoor bar that was not in operation during happy hour, but I would be interested to see it in use to find out if this is a plus or a minus for those seated on the nearby picnic tables. Let's hope that the bar naming formula has exhausted itself. Meanwhile, I'm hoping that the Yellow Jacket Social Club holds up to repeated visits.

Yellow Jacket could really be a great place in the making. Great outdoor area, nice clean bathrooms and, for a Lone Star beer girl, decently priced beer. So far, off the beaten path. The food is also fantastic. Unfortunately, some of it is really overpriced. $4 for half of a sweet potato, and that's over estimating, with an awesome, but still only mayo and inexpensive seasoning, dipping sauce. That is some seriously low food cost to be charging $4. There were two things on the day we went that were a turn off. Both of them fixable, so I'm not writing this place off and will try it again. First, the bartender really gave the impression we were more of an annoyance than money spending patrons. For multiple people to have the same opinion, it can't possibly be us. Second, the dog owners. I'm fine, for the most part, with dogs coming to the outside areas of bars. However, they should not be allowed stand on the tables, wander freely like it's their personal dog park and pee on everything. Yes, by everything I mean the picnic tables. This is simply inconsiderate dog ownership but bar management can and should be the one to call them on it.

Nice outdoor patio and a hip East side crowd without being overcrowded. Not a draught house as far as the beer selection goes, but they have Brooklyn Lager in the bottle (and a bunch more) and 6 or so beers on tap. Smells like tortillas because of the tortilla factory across the street that also sports a long wall covered in artful graffiti.

I love this place. It's awesome to go on busy nights to see who you'll run into or awesome on a slow night where you just want to sit and talk to some friends. The staff are some of the friendliest and nicest people I've met. If you're going to complain about having to wait for your drink while the bar is beyond packed, you're crazy. I love the patio and how animal friendly it is. I don't have enough good things that I could say about YJSC.

  • Jes S.

The outdoor seating is amazing and the beer selection even better. Couldn't be happier that we ended up here one Saturday afternoon. We were in town visiting our cousins and made the walk from 6th street to the YJSC. During the walk I was a bit turned off as it took longer then I had hoped. However, it was worth the wait. Although we didn't try any of the food which looked great, we had a lovely afternoon on the patio with several tasty beers.

Everyone says this, but it's true. The beet sandwich is delicious! It's just the right thing for a hot evening when all you want is a light dinner and a drink. I went here for dinner and some drinks on a Sunday and it had a very local feeling. A lot of folks sitting around the bar, chatting with each other and the bar tender. He was also very friendly and helpful when suggesting drinks. The outside patio is very nice. There are only two downsides. 1) The west side of the patio smelled kinda bad, but 2) from the east side of the patio, there were fewer trees so you could hear the squeaking fan in the warehouse across the street. Probably not a big deal when it's crowded on a Friday or Saturday. And the smell may have only been that once. I could also imagine coming here on an afternoon for a beer (when it's cooler) and working outside.

Went to the YJSC last night, Saturday, and met some friends. There were 5 of us so we opted for a picnic table. There were some funny smells, but it was from the area its in, not the bar. The drinks were cheap and the food was awesome. We had a several things from the menu, all tasty. Will be back soon.

I love this place. My friends and I come here all the time. It's a welcome change from the rest of the east side bars which can at times all seem like the same bar with just a different staff. The drinks are cheap, I like the staff, and I like the clientele. The garden, in particular, is beautiful. I don't know what kind of trees those are, but I love them. The inside is equally great looking with a rustic old west saloon feel. I dig it. There's no jukebox. As good as the jukeboxes on the east side are, I can only listen to the same stuff so often. Not only have I never had trouble finding a seat, I have also never struggled to hear anyone that I was talking to. Sounds like a good bar to me.

I was truckn' along, getting to know the area, when I saw a big sign in front of what looked like an abandoned ranch and neglected parking lot. The sign advertised brunch, so I pulled in and parked. The place looked seedy enough, and if the food sucked I still would come away with finding a new place in my neighborhood. I was pleasantly suprised to enjoy the best BLT I've ever tasted. Wasn't sure that BLTs could ever be this good... It had to be the house-cured bacon and special crack-sauce. The bartender was a good man. The whole establishment felt honest and neighborhood-focused. I will be back. The only issue I had was the strange, funky smell.

If I lived in Austin I would live at this bar. Stan is a silver fox, he's like the Anderson Cooper of real life. F your cable news shows. Jared Cannon is a secktual machine. Get on that if you have a chance. Conner is an a hole, but his blue eyes are dreamy & I totally didn't mind the roofies he put in my glass. Joey is the master of the gotdamm kitchen, anything he touches is gold. Solid gold. It like baby batter in your mouth and you feel blessed to swallow the magic. Watch out for the hip moustaches, the more drinks I have the more I wanna ride........ Best place on earth. Better than any circus.

I'm unsure how to characterize this place, but I know a good thing when I see it! The breezy, outdoor area under the Oaks makes me think I'm beside some isolated pond...on a picnic...in the 50's...with BOOZE! However, the bar area is reminiscent of any another trashy dive. Note: that has NEVER bothered me before and won't start now. Seemed like a good mix of folks East Side, South Side, even a few families were there for brunch. We didn't eat but the small menu seemed to have options for all and what I saw of the Mediterranean fare looked quite tasty. Bathrooms were sparky and fun (as fun as a bathroom can be and/or look, I suppose). My only caveat was the dirty dishes and glasses that were left alone for hours. We were one of a few tables that bussed their own station to sit down (not that its a big deal)- but we saw plenty of food delivery happening and little-to-no scoop ups of dishes on the way back. My point is- if I were walking by, I would have thought there no place to sit and moved on (when in reality, they were just long-standing dirty tables). Will certainly return.

One of my favorite Austin brunch spots. 80's noir wave, amazing shrimp&grits, croquets... and amazingly good Bloody Marys for $3.50. Yes please! This bar is also great at night time. Staff is great too.

I wrangled several friend into coming to the NY Day fun at YJSC. I must have confused the bartender by sitting at the bar, because she ignored me and yet served the folks around me. I asked the bar-back If i could have a beer and when he gestured to the bartender, she was a bit snotty with him. He was the only employees that allowed me to make eye contact. We didn't last long there. YJSC had a special menu, we were not very excited about it. To add to the not awesome time, there is always an issue with bicycle parking. I begrudgingly still like this place.

Finally had their famous brunch. I believe it's served til 3 pm. Try the shrimp and grits! Mimosas are $4 for a glass, so go for a bucket for your whole table for $12.

I still love this bar and it's been about a year since I've last reviewed it. Usually something happens in the interim... service goes down, drinks get weaker, its super overcrowded or it loses that something that makes it special. Not so with Yellow Jacket! This place has retained all its charm and then some. The drinks are reasonable and they've got that rotating menu that always makes mouth happy. The parking can be a pain and the road there is narrow at best but all worth it for a big Paloma and ogling the cuties at the bar. The community vibe here is sweet too. Any time the place is busy, you can always ask folks to scootch over and give you a little room. They'll do it with a smile.

YJSC was a pleasant surprise for a grundgy brunch. You order at the bar and take your number out to the patio where you enter an oasis of hipsters brunching. Take a seat and immerse yourself in the sea of tattoos, dogs, and buckets of mimosas. The menu looked absolutely great and I'll definitely be back to try more stuff. Their shrimp & grits were fantastic: well-cooked, not over-seasoned, comes with bacon. The pork belly was also excellent: spice-rubbed, served over perfectly greasy hash browns, comes with a runny egg.

The large outdoor space and overall ambiance screams standard bar food, but don't judge a book by its cover because the food is far from standard. Laid back atmosphere, upscale food, cheap prices and good people watching. Check, check, check...

Yellow Jacket Social Club is just a short jaunt from East Sixth and it is worth the walk. Excellent outdoor area. Enticing brunch menu. Not the most extensive selection of beers but perfectly adequate.

Pluses: Parking was a breeze, even with ACL and weird construction going on nearby. The place was nowhere near as packed as you would expect for Saturday brunch times. The French Toast plate was pretty decent. Fruit salad had a nice fresh assortment, bacon was well cooked, the French Toast itself was yummy (but a touch Cinnamon Roll-like in taste). Minuses: The inside, where I mistakenly chose to eat, smelled like basement must mixed with tinned meat. Service was apathetic and bordered on rude. Cleanliness is obviously not a chief concern. My table had bits of food stuck in the wood. Oh, also, my Sprite was undrinkable. HOW DO YOU MESS UP A SPRITE?!?!

This is my favorite Sunday brunch/daytime drinking spot in Austin, and there is no reason it shouldn't get 5 stars. First, the Bloody Mary. I didn't like them until I tried Yellow Jacket's. It's big and spicy and peppery and thick and refreshing and tomato-y with Tito's vodka and a little splash of Modelo on top, all for $5. It's a great substitute for breakfast when you're feeling a little too hungover for solid food. But if you are ready for solid food, their great brunch menu will satisfy you. The fucking sandwich with ham and a friend egg on sourdough bread smothered in white gravy? Yeah. The tofu scramble is pretty dope as well and I like that almost everything comes with a side of fruit. The girls who bartend are always the sweetest. This place is great any time of the day or night, but nothing beats Sundays relaxing on the outdoor patio with some friends as you slurp beers or pour your own mimosas. This place is ~~chill~~ and I'm into it.

This little place has it all! First, let's talk food. Oh my! What glorious food! I'm letting you know ahead of time that it changes up. But if you stick to anything with the word "pork belly" in it, you won't regret it. The hummus, if they have it, is really good. And, if you like Frito pie, they make theirs in individual little Frito bags with great toppings. But, the best part of their menu has got to be their brunch. Go for brunch one day. You'll be glad you did Then, drinks. They have a nice assortment of good beers, including local beers. And they make a mean Bloody Mary. Plus great Mimosas for brunch specials. They have a spacious, welcoming patio for hanging out on. Bring your dog because they are welcome on the patio. My favorite part about this place is the laid-back vibe. It's a bar geared for hanging out with your friends at night, or meeting up with them for lunch or brunch. It's the kind of place that says to sit down and enjoy the conversations. I like that best.

A pretty chill place to get a beer. They have a better than normal beer garden set up under the trees outside. Seems to be mostly locals as they're kinda off the normal East 6th St drag. If my neighbors in SF didn't know the owners and recommend the place to me I probably wouldn't have found it. I didn't try the food here this time though I'd like to come back for their shrimp & grits at brunch

This place is great for brunch. There's not a whole lot to look at, but what they lack in ambiance they make up in food. We had amys breakfast plate with the best fruit cup I've had in a while. WTH where are they buying that fruit from, God? Also, per yelp recommendations, we tried the shrimp and grits which was a warm slightly spicy dish that is pure comfort food. Mimosas and micheladas are also good here.

What a fun place! Definitely pretty hipster, pretty alternative (I am neither), in a great way. We came to hang and have drinks on a Friday night, got there around 830 and the place was just perfectly busy - no problem getting a table outside but lots of people there. We didn't have food, so I can't speak to that, but can speak to the atmosphere, which I just couldn't get enough of haha! So laid back. I can also speak to the cheap drinks. We put 2 beers, a glass of champagne (which I was nervous about ordering but did not get a funny look! Hipsters who are non judgemental of non hipsters. Love it.), and 3 well drinks on my tab and the total was... $24!!! TWENTY FOUR DOLLARS!! What?! Maybe I'm skewed from living in Chicago, but that's amazing. I'd definitely come here again! Only downside: mosquito bites.

I rarely get to Yellow Jacket in the evening but I go for lunch often. Seriously the best beet sandwich in town!!!!! And the sweet potato wedges are amazing too. Great patio for Spring dining. Love this little Austin gem. Support them!

So I went out with Meat Eater awhile back, and we were talking about how people get different service if they have tattoos. Me, in particular, being a "lady." I've noticed over the years that certain places judge me just because my arms are covered in pretty pictures. So, we were barhopping, it was cold, and we ended up at Yellow Jacket. I had a coat and hat on, and waited to order a beer. I stood at the bar for a few minutes before ordering said beer, waiting on someone to notice me, although the bar was not busy. Some tattooed hipster cool people were ordering, and then there was me. No tattoos to be seen, so I wasn't cool enough. I asked Meat Eater to take off his jacket (to test my theory). He is covered in tattoos, as well. Five seconds later, we were served. Hmm. So, if I am at a normal place, and show tattoos, I get weird service. And if I am at a cool bar, and don't show tattoos, I get weird service. That's fine, just strange. We sat outside, and checked out all the new EastSide people (these people didn't exist a few years ago. you just didn't go to the eastside). They were fun, and cute, and young, with silly tattoos and silly hair. It made me feel real old. Real fast. There are picnic tables outside, and a bar (which was closed when we were there). The inside is small, but cozy. There is a food menu, but I don't like food. I like beer. Duh. I'll probably try it again. Good prices, good beer, good place. But next time, I'll wear a short sleeved shirt, and show those kids with the ironic unicorn tattoos what it's like to be a real man. I mean, WOman.

I must really look young. Last time, I just kept on getting carded over and over and over. Three times in one night! Bahahaha. Seriously though, they have to come up with a better system. Or an actual one. This place is awesome because of the outdoor seating. At one point my friend pointed out the qualities of the vegetation that dominates the place. Seeing as Herbology was the class I least wanted to take at Hogwarts, I promptly forgot the name of the plant. But I will say that it makes for a very pleasant atmosphere. There is a nice laid-back quality to this place. Oh, and the food is really, really good. I can't believe a bar had food that good, honestly. However, last time I was there, the Shiner Ruby Redbird was on tap but not good ole Shiner Bock. No. I will not accept that.

The YJSC was ok. The food deserves 5 stars. My bf got the french toast and I got the pork with brown sugar. It was great for the price. The atmosphere in the early morning was not great. The bar smelled like B.O. The woman behind the bar that took our order was great: she was attentive and friendly. The worst part of this visit was the server who brought our food. He couldn't be bothered to say a word when we politely asked him for silverware. We thought he hadn't heard us until he came back with a fork and spoon. Everybody can have a bad day once in a while, but his silence was shockingly rude. I think I will return to this place again if I am craving their bloody Marys.

  • Jules W.

Are you kidding with this brunch? A-mazing! And it was not crowded at all - which I don't understand. Truly. 5$ Bloody Mary (heavy pours, and a beer topper? Indeed!), tasty bites, and a cool atmosphere - what's not to love?

    (4)
  • Nicolai M.

YJSC is my favorite bar on the east side. It's tucked away on 5th, so parking has never been much of an issue for me. Drinks are cheap, bartenders are friendly, and the atmosphere is great. Especially right around sunset with the trees and bamboo lining the outer walls begins to light up. And it doesn't seem like the type of place you would go to get a great meal, but their grilled cheese sandwich is probably the best I've had in Austin. All their food is excellent, for that matter. But come on...who can say no to a good grilled cheese?

  • Beth P.

My friends and I came here for some day drinking last Saturday. This place is a little off the beaten path, but well worth the hunt. Their patio was nice and shady due to the trees and sweet bamboo. They had a great beer selection and their good whiskey was only $5! After seeing some of the other reviews, I kind of wish we had also tried their food - oh well, something to try next time we are in Austin.

This is my favorite east side bar. The only reason I'm not giving it the 4 star treatment is my car has been broken into TWICE in the last year on their block, once at night and once during lunch hours. That strip of e. 5th street is where car windows go to die. Do not park there regardless of your intended destination and please don't let it be a deterrent against YJSC. I hope they have the motivation and power to do something about the rampant car damage done on their block. Not sure if it's their responsibility but they're the only establishment on said block and I hope they know it would be beneficial for them to do so. I've also had 2 other friends (1 of those friends-twice for her) in the past 6 months get their car broken into on the same block. It's a clear problem and the only reason I don't give this great establishment with great prices and great food and the best patio area in town, a five star review. Just park on 6th.

Great bar. Weird street situation (not their fault) The bar is great. Really nice to see quality tattoos on display and some very cool trees in their courtyard. We went for a Sunday drink with friends and we brought our dog. There were some other friends and guests with dogs as well and the staff was not only ok with them there, but they offered them some dogtreats and water. The drinks were pretty good as well and all together it was a really nice experience. Shaded well to keep you cool in the Austin heat and not too busy on a Sunday afternoon. The food was good. Hummus plate was on par or better than most you see at a restaurant and the sweet potato fries with curry were good, if not a bit heavy handed on the pepper. Other than that it was better than I expected from a bar. I think we'll try the charcuterie plate on our next visit. They have a small lot for parking but most of it is in the alleyway that backs up to the railroad tracks. It can seem like a one way street but it does indeed go both ways, surprise, surprise.

This is my absolute favorite weekend brunch spot. There have been plenty of Sundays spent here with friends, and I always feel so relaxed and at home. It may be hard to find a spot on the patio, but it's an absolute must if you want the full experience. Start things off with a 2 dollar Coors (on tap!), and then another. And then another. What's that you say? You don't like Coors? Get it anyway, because I can all but guarantee you that you've never tasted it on tap, and it's a whole different beast. And then check out The Mister. My God this sandwich. I mean, you technically could split it with someone else, but think about what you're giving up. Having a stellar sandwich like this all to yourself is more valuable than friendship. We're talking about smoked ham and gruyere panini on sourdough topped with an over easy egg and white gravy. Holy heart clog! After you've tasted the Mister, your second priority is the pork belly. It's rubbed with brown sugar and spice (seriously, guys?) and served on a bed of hash browns and an over-easy egg. You're not likely to forget it. The non-brunch menu is awesome as well. The sweet potato wedges are a must, and my favorite main dish is the Salami Panini. The roasted red peppers and kalamata tapenade are what makes this sandwich truly spectacular. And of course, it's even better with a 2 dollar Coors.

We headed here after a hike and got a great seat outside. Lots of local steam punk and hipsters hanging out, so we were out of place in our cool workout wear, but whatever. No one noticed it except us. The sandwiches are amazing, local Live Oak beer (tastes like bananas), and the football game on inside. Good looking albeit moody staff.

I was first drawn to this restaurant and bar because of its name. It also has a good Zagat rating. I went for brunch with some out-of-towners, who weren't quite sure what to make of it. It is on the East side of town in a developing area just beyond some train tracks. We got there just after its 11am opening and got the last table, although we didn't all fit at it so had to pull over a folding chair. The inside has a dark, damp, cave-like feel to it. Although it looks like a hangout for the locals, you won't get stung ;) There is ample seating outside, including picnic tables, a couple of booths, and some bar seating, but it was raining and cold the day we went. You order your food at the bar and get a number. We shared what I call "deconstructed" mimosas- they give you a bucket with ice and a bottle of champagne and the little airplane cans of the juice of your choice and you make your own at your table. I ordered a ham and gruyere panini with burre blanc- the bread was really good but the portion was huge. My friends all ordered the cognac/bread pudding french toast, which looked okay to me. I thought it was fun that the plates were made of hard plastic, with Yellow Jacket Social Club written on them, which makes me wonder about the history of the place. It looks like it is attached to a motel but I'm not sure.

I get dragged here from time to time because of the cool patio, location, brunch, full bar and I can take my pup! (He is a good bar dog who does not pee on tables.) But still, every time I go, I wonder why we're there. The food is fine. The tap beers taste a little funky, and the Bloody Mary is boooooooring. The first time i ever went (over a year ago, to be fair,) I ordered a double espresso that ended up being $5. I seem to remember their sandwiches being good, but the French toast is made on a panini press? Ok... If you're going to boast a brunch, there's a lot more to it than serving eggs on the weekends. The service is typically forgettable, which is disappointing because I'm in the industry myself and the place seems like it would have potential to have a neighborhood bar feel. I guess it doesn't matter if you're apathetic and still making tips. But I think the thing that turns me off the most is the crowd. When you walk in (after finally finding a place to lock your bike,) people just stare at you with judge-y eyes. We were literally told "seat's taken" by a group sitting at a giant picnic table (the only available space) during a packed brunch one Sunday. There were two of us and we thought it was a joking Forrest Gump reference. They proceeded to talk shit about us sitting down anyway like we weren't even there. It felt like a high school cafeteria scene you'd see in the movies. I live in east Austin and I will never be hip enough for this place. Stars for the 1-2-3 combo of a dog-friendly patio with liquor, and Flat Trak coffee on weekends. Not bad if you're looking for a chill daytime drink in the sun, but I tend to avoid it when the cool kids are out.

So as you all would know through my check-ins, my Wednesday nights are usually spent at the Violet Crown Social Club (VCSC), because of trivia. Well what do we do when trivia is cancelled? Well we still go there and celebrate hump day. Well last night I reached VCSC and my friends were all like, "We should try some new place". Another one chimes in, "Lets go to Yellow Jacket Social Club. It's awesome". Well we walked half a mile to YJSC, and were not disappointed at all. Attentive bartenders, not too crowded, cute girls, great beer selection, good drink selection, and food. Amazing outdoors space. Tons of tables, with lots of room for everyone. My friends especially loved the bamboo trees all around. He wanted to take a kitana and go chop some up, samurai style. Ok forget the drinks, lets just talk about the food. I ordered the baked goat cheese. That shit is amazeballs! I mean you're baking goat cheese with crushed red pepper and some other seasoning, serving it with a garlic spread of some kind (I think it was just baked or toasted garlic, which was then crushed to make a spread), toasted and seasoned baguette, and a jam of some kind. UHHH-MAZING! My friend had a pork belly banh mi. He stopped talking once he put that in his mouth. He kept on eating, and eating. I think at some point he had tears of joy in eyes. He can get emotional about his food. Well, all in all, I was very impressed. This place is going to be become a go-to bar for us for sure.

This review is strictly based on the fact that my car, plus three others that I saw this morning, were broken into parked over night right in from of Yellow Jacket. I just found this bar a couple weeks ago, and really like it. However, due to "those people" who decided to break into my car.... I won't be drinking there anymore.

It's off the beaten path and is super charming. With mostly outdoor seating, it's best for good weather. At first you think it's just a bar. Then you happen upon the food menu and order a sandwich. Your mind is blown. It's so good you ask everyone else at the table if you can have a bite of their sandwich. It gets uncomfortable.

Best charcuterie and Frito pie I've ever eaten at a dive bar. This place does defy description. Just go there. The food is all really good, the drinks are cheap and the vibe is great. Order the Frito pie and social crackers.

Took my Best friend on a Sunday brunch and the food was good. My only complain was that the pork belly needed to stay in the broiler a lil bit longer. The shrimps was awesome and so was the French toast, delish! We a had a bucket of champagne and I wish the oj was better quality. Cool hangout place!

The hipster Mecca. Food is decent and you can bring your dog (everyone in Austin had a dog). But the prices are a bit high. Not that impressive but also not offensive. If you want a place to hang out and have a drink, though, I give it four stars.

Read the reviews before I went and looks like hit or miss depending on what you want or expect out of this place. I went for brunch with group of friends so we sat outside. First the mosquitos were HORRIBLE!!! My poor friend had 10 bites in a few minutes. There was an empty can of bug repellent on one of the tables so apparently mosquitos are a chronic problem and wasn't special just for us today. Food was ok. I've had better pork belly which was super tough. Deviled eggs were good. Ambience? Definitely bar-ish. People rave about the Bloody Mary's but Mimosas looked skimpy in skinny glass. Parking lot and ground were all gravel so pits of standing water probably didn't help the mosquito situation. If you have to go, bring mosquito repellent and don't dress up fancy. Definitely no heals on gravel floor. I don't recommend for kids either.

I love this bar. This is the perfect bar for patio drinking, with seating for you and your dog (or cat on a leash). They have brunches on Sunday, although their menu is good throughout the week. Most importantly, they have cheap drinks and a great selection of drafts (including ABW).

Punk, patio, and brunch - what could go wrong with this? I had the pork belly topped with an egg (add Sriracha!), and it was delicious. The portion was a bit small, but it did hit the spot. If you like punk, the music was awesome (and not too loud). Bring I.D., they're on a bar license.

What do you mean there is a bar next to Tamale House? It's by the train station? Are you sure? These are the questions I made to a friend when she invited me to Happy Hour here one Friday. After that she answered yes to all those questions, I drove (yes. I asked about the train, but I decided to drive) to this place. It was a rainy day, so I didn't get to enjoy the patio (on that occasion). I went inside to this divey, funky, place and LOVED IT! It has a full bar, great bar food (the hummus is insane!), and laid back people (Most of the time). It's a great place to grab a drink. It is right next to the train, so take it down and have a few drinks!

I went last Sunday for brunch with some friends and had a great time. Picnic table sitting made for a comfy atmosphere. The Bloody Mary was the BOMB. Pork, egg and hashbrown plate delicious! The serving size was reasonable, and would have been adequate had my friends not continue to ask for taste...because it looked so delicious! If i hadn't had to actually be productive I would have probably stayed for 5+ hours.

Great place to take a friend from out of town. That's how I ended up there. Crowded on a Thursday night, good sweet potato wedges, frito pie (I had never seen a frito pie before). Good eats, bit of whimsy, folksy, very Austin, good cold beer. Parking was a challenge but my hosts figured that out.

The name of this place alone deserves a star. Teeny bar, huge patio with nice trees. Cool tunes. Great atmosphere, relatively spartan seating, but a fun spot for a group to sit outdoors, sharing food and drink. We split some charcuterie and cheese plates, but we gluten free folks didn't get much to eat, on the whole. Meat and cheese plates should come with gluten free cracker options, at least. Terrific spiced nuts! Too bad that was about all we could eat, and the lactose-intolerant person in our group had even fewer choices than I did. We spent a fairly large amount of money and still went home hungry. At least the drinks were good, and the bartenders were efficient and professional. They need a better ordering system, though. You order food from the bar, as well as drinks, and when it's crowded, the line gets very messy. There's hardly anywhere to sit when it gets chilly, as it did when the sun went down. We wound up leaving, because it was too cold. Heat lamps would have prevented that.

Rudest staff, worst service and shitty atmosphere. HORRIBLE BAR. Never come here, I know I never will again. Good riddance to the nastiest bar in Austin.

This is an east side gem (which are becoming more numerous these days!). I went the first time for drinks at night for a friend's birthday and their patio is pretty awesome at night, just bring bug spray. The whole set up is an indoor bar with no other seating and a huge patio with no servers so don't go expecting to be waited on. We went again for brunch a few weeks ago and other than a little trouble finding a table and a super packed bar to order food from, everything was great. They had a frozen bellini that was great and brunch was unpretentiously delicious and simple. It was great for what we had in mind. The atmosphere is better than the food or drink selection but I will most definitely be back.

YJSC is a pretty nifty little hole in the wall on the east side that happens to make some delicious sammiches. By hole in the wall, I literally mean it's a bit of a dive bar. Appearances can be deceiving though, the food is quite good and they have a solid selection of tasty beers and liquors. The inside of the bar can get quite rowdy. It's the east side so you'll have to put up with drunken hipsters. There is an outdoor patio area that is pretty nice, but be wary, there are a lot of hipsters who smoke. To get back to the food, try the beet sammich and the cheese plate. Both are fantastic. Service is good - you order at the bar and generally it's finished up within 5 minutes or so. Check it out!

Love this spot. Food is probably more a four but hopefully spot doesn't go the way of Rainey st and rest of east side.

Love this place, always will always have. The frito pie is really amazing, it doesn't taste at all like junk food. The beet sandwich is really good too for those who like to eat on the lighter side. The staff is great, friendly and professional. The brunch is awesome too, the pork belly dish is just perfect. A frozen mimosa or margarita to top it all off, and we have ourselves a perfect afternoon, under the blooming trees.

This place is so chill, when I opened Yellow Jacket's screen door, I wanted to exclaim "Hey honey, I'm home!". I adore the outdoor seating, it truly feels like you are hanging out in the back yard amongst friends. The Drinkage: Yellow Jacket has a full bar to include a few Texas drafts. The wine menu is exceptional, especially for a place that is more bar than restaurant. The menu had 16 wines by the glass and many more on the bottle list. The Food: According to the bartender, the menu changes up a bit so the website menu is not up to date. I ordered the soup of the day (a cabbage concoction) and the Yellow Jacket crackers. The soup was good if you like cabbage, which I do. The crackers were like pure crack! They soak saltines in this this pepper concoction, let them dry and walla, an addictive bar snack. I tasted Jesse's tuna melt, which was a good portion (note Heather F's review, it came all wrapped up like a swaddled baby) and was on the healthy side, as the bread was not saturated in butter. I love this place and can't wait to go back and try their weekend brunch!

I'll make this quick. I'm giving this place two stars, because the customer service at yellow jacket was awful when I went on a Saturday for brunch. My cognac French toast was nothing special, and by the time the waiter made it to the correct table with our food, my bacon was cold.

This place is perfect for brunch. We dropped in randomly based on some googled "brunch places in Austin" search and it turned out to be legit. Mimi the bartender is amazing, the food was great (try the pork belly) and the atmosphere is what you would expect for an Austin original. We'll be back. For sure.

I walked over here because I needed a mimosa while waiting for my mom at her hair appointment down the street. Yellow Jacket is a dark, smokey bar (kitchen smoke, not cigarette smoke) with a decent outdoor patio made up of picnic tables. I sat at the bar and had a few good mimosas before ordering a side of bacon and fruit. They serve a brunch menu until 3 on the weekends. The bartenders were friendly, attentive, and made a good mimosa. I'm pretty sure my tab was less than what it should have been. I will be back.

Met up here for a happy hour on a Friday afternoon, walked up to a sea of awesome Austinites relaxing and loving life. Grabbed a cold beer, picnic table, and enjoyed some really good tunes on the radio! Life was good this day! I'll be back!

I loved this place so much. I can't wait to go back. I got the shrimp and grits and bucket of mimosas. It was Saturday brunch. The food was absolutely perfect. There wasn't a bite left on my plate. Same goes for my husbands plate. Everything was reasonably priced. We did go after it had rained for two days straight, so it was really sloppy out there. The benches outside are placed around beautiful trees, and would have been nice had it not been muddy as hell. The water just seemed to collect all around there. I wore boots so it wasn't too bad for me. So my advice would be to wear boots if you go after it rains. Also the parking isn't very great, but what is down there? The place was pretty amazing, I can't wait to go back.

YJSC. I like this place, but I don't want to; I am not sure if that is good or bad. There a lot of positives, like a really cool back patio with plenty of seating and dog-friendly to boot. Also, there is a pretty decent selection of both draft beers and food; check out the board with the specials on it, which changes daily. Negatively, this bar smells funny. I'm not sure if it's the cleaning products, the types of food they cook (which is mostly paninis-I don't think they have a full kitchen) or a combination of the two. I dislike the smell so much I can't sit inside. Also, the bar area is huge and the ordering line is right at the main door to the bar, which means as you are ordering food and drinks, people are trying to squeeze by to deliver food and go the the restroom. I am sure that can be easily fixed? Overall, I will keep coming here; I heard the brunch is choice!

I love it here so much... the drinks are great.. the selection of booze is awesome.. the food is good... I could end the review at that and feel proud of it. I love the huge wall of wonderful graffiti across the street.. I love the way the inside of the bar smells like Panini when I walk in. I love the way the patio is covered by small trees so that at night when I'm sitting at the table drinking my beer staring at the wonderful art across the street it feels like I'm in a small shady forest. Did I mention the drinks are reasonably priced.. I have some issues with dirty east side hipster bars.. and while this is an east side hipster bar, it has all of the best qualities and almost none of the bad! Its a little out of the way and parking sucks, but who cares park somewhere else walk over here and have a great time!

it's a dive bar with an outdoor patio. being the East Side - if you close your eyes and open them - you'll think its the 80s with the way everyone here dresses. The people that work here remind me of Austin past - easy going and friendly. Brunch here is reasonable - you order at the bar and they give you a number and you find a place to sit - out in the patio is a reasonable choice - indoors just feels to cramped. The Bloody Mary is good like the other reviewers. Remember its a dive bar - so it's not going to fancy shamncy downtown hipster sort of place - there's a garbage bin somewhere that gives off a rotting food odor especially on a warm mornings when the fans are running outside. The parking lot - one of the few places with a lot these days has potholes and lots of muddy places. If you walk or bike here - as downtown expands to the East- there's construction nearby. Hope this place will last at least a while more but the area is quickly revitalizing and gentrifying so let's cross our fingers.

This is strictly a brunch review- Either I wasn't hungover enough or I ordered the wrong thing, because the brunch was pretty mediocre. I had the special frittata which tasted like reheated pre-frozen egg pods with some goat cheese slapped on top. I enjoyed the slightly stale baguette slices with butter more than my entree. My friend had the panini with béchamel, which she said was also underwhelming. The bechamel was cold and made the sandwich soggy, should have been served on the side or the bread should have been grilled more.We had mimosas and were served those small canned juices which, as we all know, are the last resort of juices when you are in a mexican border town.

We tried to go to another place that was packed (I'm glad, I didn't like the "scene") and my wife found this little gem. At first glance it could be a dive bar, but the people were polite, interesting and helpful. The food was unexpected and delicious. This was a big present in a tiny package.

This was a GOOD brunch. Spicy bloody mary, mimosa, and some awesome food. Nothing particularly healthy about it ( but I guess thats the fun of brunch?) I sat outside and enjoyed my experience totally. Now I am trying to find other excuses to brunch there on a semi regular basis. ( next time Im trying the pork belly!) For the gluten free bloody mary fans- they put beer on the top of the drink. I saw it happening and called it out. They apologized and made me a new one- very cool- but be warned.

I visited Austin last weekend and we only went here for one drink in the middle of the afternoon, but my friend forgot to close her tab when we left, so I also got to visit YJSC later that night to pick up her debit card. What I noticed both times at the bar: the bartenders seem to be very attentive with every drink, which is great, but leads to more of a wait for your drink. Luckily we were able to walk from where we were staying, because like everywhere else in Austin, parking is a bitch. I only wanted to write this review because I really enjoyed the trees in the patio area. CREPE MYRTLES FOREVER! Crepe myrtles bump a three star up to a four, in my opinion.

Love this place. The bartenders are pretty friendly and they have a decent, but small, beer selection. Food options are impressive and tasty for what you'd expect and prices are reasonable. The outdoor seating area is situated amoung what feels like a grove of trees, very cool. The most important thing to note is the parking. DO NOT LEAVE YOUR CAR PARKED ON 5TH ST. I'm not talking about just overnight, I'm talking for any amount of time any time of day. My friend and I left our cars here between 7:30pm-12:30am on Friday evening and we came back to our passenger side windows smashed. Luckily nothing was stolen, but neither of us had anything besides a few CDs and personal belongings like sweaters and travel mugs. We should have listened to our gut after we saw some broken glass on the side of the road, but we didn't. Don't let the same thing happen to you. I'm not sure what kind of alternative parking is available besides the small lot, but a $250 replacement window is not worth the inconvenience of parking far away. More than one person walked by us while filing a police report saying the same thing had happened to them, it's clearly a very common occurrence. Four stars for the experience pre-break in and for the kind employee who lent me a broom so that I could sweep away the broken glass that covered my driver's seat so I could safely drive home. Less impressed with the employee who I returned the broom to, he just looked annoyed and said "I've been looking for that" even after an explanation.

Two words: Pork Belly. I'm pretty much a sucker for it, if you look at my last review, I went to Bacon. It should be no surprise that when I came to YJSC, I got the Pork Belly. I loved it! You can taste the brown sugar, but it wasn't drenched in it. The pork belly itself wasn't dry or anything (I don't think so). The over-easy egg was nice and runny. The hash cake was crunchy and a good complement to the pork belly. A part of me wishes it was a bigger portion...and a part of me (the more practical one) thinks it's probably for the best. I really don't know if I would have been able to eat another one of those. We also got a mimosa bucket (~$17); you get to choose from grapefruit, OJ, or pineapple juice. Staff is pretty friendly. I believe there's a $10 minimum on credit cards. The bloody mary's look delish, garnished with kinds of yummy's. Atmosphere was super chill, we sat outside because it was such a beautiful day! Definitely want to come back to try the rest of the menu (like the shrimp and grits!)

More of a dive bar that serves good food. Went for Brunch and they had a very limited menu. Expected a restaurant but it's actually a bar. You seat yourself and order food at the bar. Food was amazing. Just wished there was a menu obviously displayed somewhere cause it was a little confusing at first. Also would have liked more menu options.

I stopped here for brunch on a Sunday with a friend that was from out of town and it was a great experience! The food is amazing! I got the Pork Belly and she got the American Breakfast. We both loved our meals! The ladies working the bar were awesome! I think they could tell we were knew so they were extra patient and attentive with us. And of course, I feel this place really captures the Austin experience! I am definitely coming back here!

While on the eastside I was looking for a place to grab a bite one evening before heading out to explore eastside night life, and decided to stop in at Yellow Jacket which has been on my Austin checklist for awhile. If it wasn't for all the people outside at the picnic tables in the heavily forested outdoor seating area, you would walk right by this place easily mistaking it for someone's backyard. You walk through the outdoor gate and up to the building and into the bar area. There is nothing fancy about this place, indoors or out, which is what made the quality of food we received unexpected. You must go in to order your drinks and food, and then you get a number and they bring the food out to you. Of course we went outside as the temps had dropped, and the outdoor seating area has such a great vibe to it. The only downside is we forgot to apply bug spray, and while we were feasting, we got feasted on. Their cheese plate was of a high quality, tasty, and done well overall. The spicy nuts, were hard to stop eating, and the sweet potato chips were AMAZING!! They must have been oven roasted, or something. I didn't feel guilty eating them at all. I have never had anything like them, but they were great, and came with a delicious dipping sauce. Better yet, I washed everything down with a Eastside Cider served from the tap!! This was my first time drinking it from the tap, and it really makes such a difference. We had a great time hanging out here and enjoying the ambiance of the outdoor setting, chatting, and definitely some great people watching to be had. I want to come back and try their well rated brunches.

Went here for brunch - lots of hype on yelp. Be aware- you are going to a bar. This place has a cool outdoor area, tables in a small forest. Just don't expect service- you go inside the bar to order and get your own water from a cooler. Food was ok. Portions are small- so you may want to order two dishes. French toast was the best item we had on the menu.

Terrific location, ambiance, setting, decor, and vibe. The food is deliciously appropriate for a meal, or a snack. This joint sure checks all the right boxes, and is approved--by me--to be referred to as "so very Austin."

Here for brunch? Try the mister and a Bloody Mary. I love this little hipster dive. Brunch is always hectic but the staff has it under control. I'm a fan of their non-brunch menu as well. The sweet potato wedges are fantastic. The patio is perfect for a beautiful night. The atmosphere is relaxed. Grab a couple of friends and enjoy some good conversation out on the patio.

The setting here is great! If you're sitting outdoors, despite a little sweat, it's a really fun atmosphere and quiet enough to talk. Drink prices are affordable. I will definitely be going back to try their food. Maybe they could try and add a tad more outdoor seating, because it took a little while to find somewhere to sit.

Yellow Jacket's alright, but they really ought to fill the potholes in the lot. I hit one on my bike and ended up having to get 14 stitches in my knee. Hospital bill not worth the trip.

I will preface this review by saying that I've only come to the Yellow Jacket Social Club for brunch and have not partaken in its nighttime adventures. Parking is readily available along the length of the Metro Rail tracks located on the other side of 5th Street. You might have to park a block or two away though because this place gets super busy. Upon arrival, it is not immediately apparent where or how you order your food because there are so many people waiting on tables. You order inside at the bar where you'll get a number and thrust into the crowds to hunt for seating. Because brunch is usually a casual undertaking, finding seats is neigh impossible since earlier patrons aren't leaving and newcomers are constantly jockeying for openings. I ordered the French Toast and a side of hash. Unfortunately I never got the latter, which was probably the result of it somehow never being actually ordered. The French Toast was satisfying and sugary while the "fruit cup" was mediocre at best. My girlfriend got The Mister and gave up about halfway through it. If you're starving and want the best bang for your buck, get the panini. It's ridiculous. And probably equally unhealthy. Her order of hash was burnt on the outside and undercooked on the inside, so maybe the order-taker did me a favor. One day I'll check out the nightlife here.

  • Eric S.

I just don't see the allure. The food is sort of expensive, when you consider portion size and restaurant ambience. There's always sort of a weird "horse droppings" smell all around that place... perhaps not the fault of the restaurant, since I saw no horses there... but still, try enjoying your tofu scramble and mimosa while breathing in these noxious odors! (Hodor.) And would it really be too much trouble to get "real" orange juice for the mimosas? That canned stuff tastes sort of chemical-y. This place is better than one star, but not quite three stars. Two stars it is, I guess.

The absolute worst service I have ever had. My friend and I were denied a drink for god knows what reason, except for that we said we were from out of town, so we didn't fit in to their stuck up, pretentious, social circle. If you talk louder than a whisper and are having fun with your friends.... you are too drunk to be at this bar. The bartenders were so completely full of themselves, they could care less about anyone else. I have never been treated so poorly, even at the most uppity bar in Dallas. After getting the slowest service for food, we eventually all got kicked out and yelled at by the a-hole bartender, who drank another one of my friends (who was fortunate enough to get a drink here in the first place) drinks in front of all of our faces and yelled at him for trying to walk out on the tab, while he was standing in front of the bar the whole time. I was told this was a skater bar, but we were actual skaters and were treated worse than the scum of the earth. Basically, don't waste your time.

A great hidden gem!! Go there about once or twice a week. Great low key atmosphere, and food is awesome. Try to avoid a Saturday afternoon, a bunch of db's show up on there Huffy's and take up the bar and picnic benches with there water's.

I would of never found this place just driving around. Thanks to yelp we found a new place. The place looks nothing special but sooo fits in on the eastside. I had the pork belly brunch while the other person had the mister. The food was very good and priced fair. They have a great outdoor patio area. I am for sure looking to comeback when it is dark out.

First off, I love the name of this bar. Second, I love the divey aspect of this bar. It reminds me of one of my favorite bars back in Orlando (BBQ Bar), but with way more hipsters. Actually, BBQ Bar is more like a rock music haven than it is hipster-ish, but I digress. Parking, at least during the day, is ample at this place, though the interior is tiny. We sat at the bar, but most people were taking their drinks outside. I love having the option; it was just a bit chilly for me that day. All of the bartenders and the barbacks were extremely nice, but what else would you expect out of Austin? I remember drinks being inexpensive and them having a bahn mi special on the chalkboard that sounded delicious. I can't wait to go back.

I'm loving Yellow Jacket more every time I go there. The first few times I went were just for drinking, and that was pretty cool, but these days, now that I wake up in the morning like a normal grownup, I live for brunch, and I have never experienced anything from their brunch menu that was anything short of amazing. In particular, those shrimp and grits are my jam. (Except don't actually get them with jam, becuase that might be weird.) If you need something heavier, try The Mister; that thing is the king of all breakfast sandwiches. It requires a fork and knife, and I've seen it cure some pretty nasty hangovers. In the evenings, when I like to bring friends from out of town who are tired of all the obvious dirty 6th stuff and tourist food, the frito pie can't be beat. Something something cuban pork belly, I forget exactly what's involved there, just go put it in your mouth. My only complaint is that seating can be hard to come by. Inside only has a few tables, and if there isn't a monsoon or a polar vortex going on, the yard will be full by noon. (And here I am telling you how great this place is, thus becoming part of the problem.)

I very seldom rant on Yelp, but sometimes you just gotta let it out, so excuse my language before I get started. I got accused of being "so Dallas" a lot when I first moved to Austin because I asked people what they did for a living. I immediately decided that hipsters were pretentious about pretension, and this bar proves me right. This place on the east side with no fucking parking lot (there is a parking lot, but if it drizzles the damn thing turns into a lake) has market price on their cheese. Wait, you have market priced cheese, but I'm "so Dallas?!?!?" This hipster shit has to stop. What is the price of the fugging cheese? It's not Sea Bass, and we're not sure how much is gonna come in from the ocean. It's cheese. If you want to be a casual, laid-back hangout, then do that, but your identity crisis is annoying. Service is whatever (verging on rude), and the prices are more than I really care to pay (when I know the price at all). This might be me taking out my angst from some of the bitchiness I receive when I show up to places on the east side wearing a polo, but I'm just not into it. Sorry, kids. 2 stars for having a decent beer selection. "An ounce of pretension is worth a pound of manure."

For once I won't be commenting on drinks at a bar. We'd just come in from the bring-your-own-cup-to-fill Yelp event so we'd had plenty. Instead I'll point out how unusually tasty the sweet potato slices are with their loads of spices and curry mayo. I also splurged on a ham and cheese sandwich and thoroughly enjoyed the carb coma that crusty toasty bread brought on. And damn that mustard was good! My date got the beet sandwich (with goat cheese!) which is a unusual (he loved it) but fits in with the other unexpected menu items (Marinated pork loin satay...at a bar?). It's small, dim without being dingy inside, and has a good casual vibe. But hip enough that I was honestly surprised to see a TV with NFL on...but was personally pleased since the Sunday night game was on. A few tables inside but a nice big bar to sit at. I wish it were warmer so we could have sit outside - my first choice as it's on the relatively quiet 5th, has trees, and is quaintly lit. As we settle into our new East Syde home I bet we'll be back. PS. We did go back, on a Tuesday night, and were disappointed at the amount of very loud and very drunk patrons. While a few were just regular folk, some were quiet unsavory and potentially homeless? Was sort of surprised they kept getting served (one party was ordering 3 Lone Stars EACH at a time)...Ah well, we ordered the exact same food and it was still awesome. Just thinking this spot may be hit or miss (i.e. if it's a miss, we'll just see if we can get our delicious food to go ;-)

Pro- they have a parking lot!!!! That's rare downtown!! Seemed a little hipster-ish ....dive-ish, but I saw a couple families eating, so looked open to all demographics. Checked out their brunch options....everyone was really nice and welcoming. Order food/drinks at the bar and they bring you your food. Self seating. Self serve coffee/tea/water station. Lots of outdoor seating. I ordered the Shrimp & Grits and REALLY liked it! Yummy combo of flavors. The bacon wasn't over powering and the spinach made me feel I was doing good to my body ... :) (bacon and spinach leaves cancel each other out, right?) shrimp cooked perfectly. Grits had a good texture. Would recommend to others! :)

I have been to YJSC two times now, but I need to go again before I give it a full-scale fiver. I mean, four stars is a strong rating, folks. So, I'm telling you: I like this place! I like how the tables are balanced between crepe myrtles. I feel protected and cared for as I sip and munch. I like how the place feels tucked away and sequestered, far from the tightly worn Affliction shirts and upwardly riding cocktail dresses. I like looking at the railroad tracks and the inspired graffiti across the way. I like the roasted sweet potato wedges. I like the three-bean red beans and rice. Both times I've hung out at YJSC I've lost track of time. It is a place that sends the word "bar" straight to a therapist. This is so much more than a bar; it's almost like a social club. I feel comfortable and relaxed when I am there, even before I've ordered my first drink. The drinks, by the way, are nice and robust. When I am there, I wonder: When do crepe myrtles bloom? How much cooling (relative term, here) summer shade will they provide? Will cicadas roost in the thoughtfully-groomed limbs? Anway, I'll be back, and so should you.

away from the increasingly hustle-and-bustle atmosphere on east sixth street, but still within easy walking distance, this newest entry in the gentrification of east austin is worth going off the beaten path. yellow jacket social club (YJSC) hasn't abandoned the most beloved elements left over from café mundi, whose space it has adopted. from its cuban-influenced sandwich menu to a gorgeous patio, whose placement in just a bar may be unrivaled in austin. this patio is across the street from some of the more visually interesting graffiti austin's juvenile delinquents have thrown upon a wall in town. the bartenders, whose salty language may be too festive for your bridge & tunnel crowd, are still a lot better than most, and the service here is faster than some of the other east side bars one could choose. as far as bar food goes, the menu exceeds expectation. highlights include the frito pie & those damn YJSC crackers, whose addictiveness will easily justify what at first might seem like an outrageous price to pay for a basket of saltines. as much as i want to keep singing the praises of this bar, the fact that it hasn't been overrun with scene kids looking for the new place to show off their skinny jeans & other hipster status symbols is a huge part of its charm. until then, i'll enjoy the hell of its patio, with or without them.

The courtyard provides nice scenery and the food is great, but the waitstaff can be pretty rude and short with you even when you haven't done anything to deserve a bad attitude. Come for the vibe and the food, but don't expect world class service.

Getting older sometimes means getting away from downtown traffic and relaxing with fantastic cocktails, good people and awesome food. Yellow Jacket is one of the few places that offers that comfort. My 3 year old is more than welcome, and I've know the employees for YEARS. Never in a million would they ever be anti-anything except anti-idiots. And just as Joe P mentions, sometimes it's just not going to be your cup of tea. For the rest of us, maybe it is more of a social club atmosphere, like Cheers. If you don't like it, perhaps you drove too far across I35.

A sigh of relief for the Eastside. Off the path of east sixth, a uniquely buillt and comfortable setting. They have a full kitchen featuring some seriously bangin sandwiches salads and appetizers. Frito pie served up proper IN THE BAG. Outdoor patio area and they have Fernet. Sold.

Omg, my friends told me about this place and they only go to cool places so I had to go check it out. WTF It was so crowded and there were no stools! Whatevez. I don't care. But then I asked for a rusty nail and the bar tender called me a word a can't repeat. It starts with an F and rhymes with bag and all these people laughed! I asked him his name and he told me Frank Sinatra. Yeah right, my mom-mom likes that guy so I know he was lying. I didnt know what to do, but then I saw the coffee machine and said I'd rather have a skinny mocha decaf latte double foam extra lid and he told me to go back to Starbucks. At least there I can sit and get what I want!!! Anyway, I got a sandwich or whatever and it was ok so I guess I'll come back.

This place was like finding an oasis in the desert during SXSW. Great drinks, sandwhich, friendly staff, patio was great and shaddy, I don't think I have anything negative to say about this place. Will be visiting again soon.

great patio, friendly bar staff, cheap drinks, better people watching... hipsters in their native habitat glare at the non hipsters and the non hipsters try to decipher if the hipsters are all wearing the same thing or just have different tattoos. mixed groups (hipsters +non hipsters) provide for the most entertainment.

It isn't that cool. The beet sandwich and veggie Frito pie are the only two reasons I end up there ... and it is usually on my walk home after drinks. They are good. But, I end up here only because I really want Tamale House (East!) and they aren't open. The staff is pretty sour and I'm pretty sure they don't want us gay dudes in there spreading our rainbows and ribbons ... and everyone in the neighborhood hates the way all the patrons park. Parallel park! This isn't the country! Hate, hate, hate!

so let me point out the good points of this place they have a wonderful yard area that makes me feel like i am in narnia the bar and all the interior are made from reclaimed wood they serve food super late and its all made in house the drinks are pretty affordable and usually very stiff always good tunes on and an acceptable video on the tv now the bad points when you make a place really awesome and all kinds of different people want to go there sometimes not everyone has a good time that being said i know for a fact the owner loves the gays and i never understood why people drink jack and coke but Etheline A. i will personally invite you to a night out on my dime at the yellow jacket and if you dont have the time of your life i will delete this review i am not affiliated with this place in any way other than i love going there and by the way we will be drinking tequila

I've been hearing good things about this place since a fellow Barley Swine patron recommended it to me and my boyfriend. Because I love Barley Swine, I assumed that others who frequent the restaurant must know what they are talking about. Granted, I did go to Yellow Jacket on a random Monday at 6:30 with a strange crew in tow, including my suit boyfriend, my silk romper-wearing friend, and my boyfriend's 60-year-old father, and we were less than welcomed, but the servers didn't exactly scoff at our presence either. It was pretty much what I expected of the East side: hipsters smoking American Spirits (no judgment; it's my brand, too) and drinking Lone Star while proudly rocking vintage t-shirts. [As an aside, just because a t-shirt is old is not enough to make it cool. Some are just too stupid to be ironic, no matter how many rockabilly pinup girl tattoos you have. Yes, I'm talking to you, Richard Marx concert t-shirt wearer. Not enough time has gone by, nor will it ever, to make that shirt acceptable.] Anyway, we had to choose a table inside since my boyfriend's dad thought it was too hot for him outside. I do not recommend this move, by the way. Outside is actually really pretty. It's lined with dozens of birch(?) trees decorated with the obligatory white Christmas lights, a small bar, big fans, and plenty of picnic style tables. Even in 100 degree weather it's oddly comfortable, whereas inside is a bit dingy, but the dive-y atmosphere does seem to add to the charm. The bartender finally won me over when my bf mistakenly ordered a vodka tonic for me and I had to switch it out for a vodka soda, which the bartender politely did "no problem." That exchange, however, is pretty much to be expected, but I anticipated that he might hassle me about it. The new drink was a little weak, though- okay, very weak by my standards. I heard the food was surprisingly delicious, so we sampled several things off the menu that includes upscale appetizers for a bar (homemade sweet potato chips that everyone else thought were delicious and ordered two plates of them), salads, and gourmet sandwiches, many of which include gruyere- yum! YJ went up a few notches in my book for that. I took a chance and ordered the Mediterranean tuna melt on multigrain and it was fantastic! A tuna sandwich at a bar seemed really risky, kind of like asking the bartender to make you the strongest, creamiest shot possible and blindly expecting to feel fine afterwards, but it was awesome! Very little mayo, plenty of capers and dill, the right amount of melted gruyere, and the toasty bread had the perfect ratio of nooks to absorb the filling and cheese, and just a touch of butter from the grill. It was seriously one of the best tuna melts I've ever had. Once we finally ditched my bf's dad and sat outside, I understood why this place has such a stellar reputation. It's got a good, relaxed vibe, not to mention I love the music choices (Hendrix and Otis Redding). Just remember to get a seat outside, order the tuna melt, and for the love of all things sacred, make fun of the guy in the Richard Marx shirt. This has got to stop.

This place kicks so much ass, by far my favorite new spot on the East Side, it's a damn shame some crybabies are giving this place a bad name. Oh, what...you're never coming here again, mission accomplished!

Whoa! I thought everyone knew how lame this place was...Until I saw it tied for best bar in the Chronicle poll? Admittedly, I've only been once, after it had been open a few months. But that was one too many times: The wine was okay, but the "goat cheese" appetizer we ordered was definitely a slab of cream cheese. My friend and I couldn't really get into it (cream cheese and celery, yeah -- cream cheese and wine and chutney, no) but didn't whine. We did ask what brand of "goat cheese" it was when we closed our tab, and the guy in the kitchen showed us some huge empty tub of a generic goat cheese brand. So basically, rather than tell us he was out, he had obviously charged us $9 for a chunk-o-Philadelphia. Cool. To top it all off, my friend accidentally left her card there -- she'd opened a tab but then we paid cash and left when we realized how much better we could do. When she went back the next day, they'd charged our whole bill (that we'd already paid) to her card and added a 40% tip! Ha.

Austin's best new destination spot. Great atmosphere with a beautiful, spacious (and dog-friendly) patio. Charming staff and creative yet reasonably-priced food. Also, you can enjoy your typical East Austin stand-by libations, like Lone Star (served ice-cold) and Jameson, but Yellow Jacket also has an extensive and varied wine selection, with choices for every budget. Bonus Biggie Smalls mural across the street! My understanding is that they're gonna have the credit card machine up and running any day, but for now bring cash. This place is rad.

I enjoyed my time and Yellow Jacket. The building and location itself is pretty interesting. I believe it used to be an apartment complex of sorts. There's a large patio which is great to sit outside in the warm Texas air.

I had brunch here for the first time with a date on Mother's Day because my mother lives in California, and I wanted brunch with the following criteria: drinks, outdoor seating. I used to come here when it was Cafe Mundi and I always enjoyed the outside vibe with the crepe myrtles and the breeze and I knew it was a new place to eat so we decided to check it out. We both ordered the same thing: Empanadas with a Rasberry chutney that came with a side salad and it was DUH-LUSH-UHS. I also ordered a bloody maria which was super spicy, but I ordered it that way. We were totally satisfied with the price and with the quality of the food but when I went in to close my tab the bartender lady was confused and told me my "boyfriend" had already closed my tab, which I knew was impossible because it was only our first date and there was no way he'd take those liberties with my credit card. She shuffled around for another 5 minutes until she realized she had closed someone elses' tab out on my card and gave them my card to take home. Shit happens, I thought. It was a Bank of America Card and every douche-bag like my has an account with them. I closed my account and she reversed all charges and that was that. A few days later I got a phone call personally from the owner appologizing and offering me a free meal. I TOOK IT, a few weeks later and it was equally as delicious. I will definitely go back. Good customer service, and one of the owners "Amy" was totally awesome and went above and beyond by calling me personally. Will go again for sure.

Holy crap! Honky tonk bar meets creative food fusion! To start with: the service was great at the bar. The bartender welcomed us and made suggestions on the menu (since it was our first time). We went with two sandwiches: the pastrami pannini and the beet sandwich. Wow! Both were great and we also had the sweet potato wedges which are to die for. Five stars only because Yelp won't let me give six!!!

Loved this place. Had the deviled eggs, The Mister sammich, and washed it down w/ a mimosa. Great service. Very nice employees. Loved the cool interior. The classic country playing was the icing on the cake. Definitely my new fav brunch place.

ok so there's been a situation obviously this past weekend that has colored a certain group's experience. what i can say, as a gay dude, that has lived here for many years, that knows about what it feels like to be discriminated against, is that this place is a place i call home. i have known the owners for years and they have welcomed me into their lives as who i am ever since we first met, before they opened a bar, when there was no reason to be nice to me other than them accepting who i am and embracing it. i come here about three times a week and know everyone behind the bar and think they are rad people i am happy to call my friends. though i can't speak to these naysayers' specific interaction, i can resolutely say that this place is not homophobic. quite the contrary. it's a place that just wants you to have a rad time, and that offers a great array of wines, beers, spirits, and even more amazing, their food. i've had a large swath off their menu, and everything has made me so happy. i feel bad that there was a negative interpretation, but my queer brethren, do not be fooled by one group's vitriol and rabble rousing. this is a space that is welcome to everyone, and i vouch for it with all my gayness intact. the space is fantastic. the service is friendly and prompt. the owners and workers are locals and care about the community. i mean to say is that i love the yellow jacket as it is my social club. the end.
