Good service can't make up for the bland, flavorless, not-at-all Indian food buffet. If you're a fan of Northern-style Indian cuisine, this is a huge let-down in every respect. Where are the poppadoms? Where's the spice? Why does the chicken Tandoori suck so bad? And why is there a meatball dish in the middle of all the food? I'm pretty sure whoever cooks here couldn't find India on a map - for fans of true Indian food, the fare here is a joke. --- The manager sent me a private message saying: "Is this a joke " No it's not.

Well, One of the best Indian restaurants in Austin area is how I will like to describe this place. Nice menu variety of options, good service and tasty food. Their buffet is awesome- they have a south Indian and north indian spread together, fresh made dosa is served along with lunch and there are some chaat items as well. Love their Malai Kofta, chicken jalfrezi as well as the amritsari fish and garlic paneer appetizer. Other items are nice as well. The only negative thing- this place does take pride in their Dal Bukhara recipe and that is one dish that has always disappointed me. I am pretty sure its made once in three days and thus, never tastes fresh. Their recipe may be nice but the actual dish is not! Overall a great restaurant with some authentic dishes, good for casual dining or family time out.

I'm sad I have to write such a poor review for a place I have been dreaming about dining in for many months.. The lunch buffet offered about 8-10 dishes, mostly consisting of vegetarian dishes... They had three meat dishes, two were chicken (tikka masala and tandoori chicken) the other one... beef meatballs.. huh?? Unfortunately the chicken was rather dry, and the meatballs were, well.... odd to say the least!! I sampled every dish item, including the vegetarian dishes, and only found the chicken tikka masala and tandoori chicken tasty. Overall my experience with the lunch buffet was pretty disappointing.

When I eat Indian food I am often less than impressed with the quality of many Indian eateries around Austin. Bombay Bistro is one of my top two favorites for several reasons. The quality of the food is great, the place is clean and casual, there is ample parking, and there's a great selection on the menu. Some of my favorites? The chicken tikka masala, aloo gobi, and the aloo paratha. The latter, stuffed with peas and potatoes is absolutely delicious. The portions are moderately sized and the price is moderate too. I have a great disdain for buffets because I think they're total health hazards with cold, crappy quality food but for some reason Bombay Bistro's weekday lunch buffet doesn't have that effect on me. They have really fresh, small chafing dishes of food that is changed out regularly and a really nice selection. If you're in the mood for Indian this is a neighborhood jewel for North Austin.

I'd say Bombay Bistro is one of the better Indian restaurants in Austin - unfortunately, I feel that Austin is overall lacking when it comes to Indian food. I've eaten food from here both catered and in the restaurant. The catered food has always been AMAZING. The food in the restaurant has always been good, although not amazing.

The Vegetarian Sampler (thali) is huge compared to other places. As in portion size of each sample rather than the number of samples. I had to take half of it home where I would have eaten all of the thali at other places. Food was flavourful but the spice level was low where the raita was not needed. Malai Kofta was rich and creamy. My sister liked her goa fish curry. Ambience was very pretty for a strip mall shop. I'm impressed. There weren't many people there on a Monday night though.

If 0 stars were possible... THE worst Indian food I have ever had. Flavorless and cold food. Terrible service. I never ate my meal and the server never inquired about it. We never got our drinks. One of the worst dining experiences of my life.

Good food, decent service, accommodating prices. Some of their dishes are really good and authentic. My fav dish is Malai Kofta. A simple analysis(out of 10): Food: 9 Price:8 Service:7.5 Ambience:8 Value for money:8

To start off with there is a really cocky waiter at this place. He acts like he's doing you a favour by taking the order. This is by far the worst Indian restaurant you could step into. Food quality bad. You get the naan 45 mins after your done with your meals. If you ask them for spicy food it would be just full of chillies. N if u ask for less spicy it would be full of tomatoes. They keep you waiting. I wouldn't even give this place one star. Don't ever step in here . There r better Indian places with courteous staff.

  • Nigel H.

Really great food! I knocked one star off due to a very slow start from the wait staff. They were not busy (only 4 tables) and it took a good 15mins to order after I got my water. Besides that, they were friendly and helpful during my meal. Had the Chicken Tikka Masala which was one of the best I've had in a long while. Pared with Naan and I was good to go! Will definitely be back here next visit to Austin. Thank you Bombay!!

I am writing this review primarily in the context of their lunch buffet which I ate today. I have also had dinner and take-out, but that was a while ago. I am a vegetarian, Indian (Punjabi - North Indian) from the UK so that factors into my rating too The lunch buffet had a very good variety of dishes with lots of options for vegetarians. The spice level was decent - considering they have to cater to a mixed audience. They had one Indian-Chinese dish (cauliflower/ghobi) which was ok. The other dishes were traditional north indian curries. They had a tandoori chicken (at the end of the line per all buffets :-), which I obviously didn't try. They also served naans and pakoras. The pakoras were mediocre, the curries reasonably good. They served fruit and kheer (rice pudding) for dessert. The kheer was far too sweet. The price point was around $10 and seemed fair. The service was very good.

While Clay Pit still holds number one in my book for my favorite Indian food in Austin, Bombay Bistro holds a fighting second. However this review isn't focusing on the food so much as the service. As soon as you sit down a plate of the dry lavash style cracker with condiments hits the table followed immediately by your server to get your drink order. I hadn't been into the restaurant in months but the manager remembered me right away and went so above and beyond to make sure I had everything I needed. Including overhearing me ask my server if they had the cream cheese naan on the menu. When the server said they did not, I was perfectly happy to let it go, but he went back to the kitchen, worked some magic and showed up a piping hot basket of cream cheese naan. That the staff cares about your dining experience clearly shows in their attention to detail.

Chicken tiki masala was not as good as I was expecting, but the navratan korma and mutton curry more than made up for it. Pleasant, clean atmosphere as well.

Bombay Bistro put on a fine spread for Mother's Day brunch. Six different types of curries, three kinds of fried vegetables (including my favourite, spinach in chick pea batter), two types of meat, a variety of sauces/condiments, a dessert section... it was a a feast. They made a special effort with the naan. As naan is not at its best if left sitting awhile on the chaffing dish, BB grilled it in small batches and kept replenishing as needed. Piping hot pieces would always be available when we re-visited the buffet. The only downside was the soup and the tandoori chicken. I can't recall much about the soup except it was blah. And the chicken was definitely not cooked in the tandoori style. It looked and tasted like generic baked chicken. At least it was plain enough to suit my son! Service was good enough, considering that we only needed our plates cleared and water glasses refilled. Even though the place was full and there were parties waiting to be seated, we did not feel rushed. As opposed to other buffet restaurants, the check was produced only after we asked for it. Lovely special event brunch at a very affordable price in a relaxed setting.... we would definitely do this again next year!

Awesome buffet food. Good variety and genuine Indian cuisine taste. Interiors are good and comfortable. A must go place for enjoying authentic Indian food. People are friendly as well. Would definitely recommend this place to everyone.

Ate there on my own (in town for meetings) and received prompt service and excellent food. I had chicken tikka masala, rice and keema naan. Food was very tasty and reasonably priced. The bathroom must be under renovations; in pretty rough shape!

Good food. BTW, the mussels curry available with buffet only on Friday . They told me otherwise when phoned in but wasn't available in buffet. Was disappointed since it's my favorite and went in just to have that :(

Indian buffet in Texas shouldn't be hard to find. Bombay Bistro has two locations in Austin. The one that I went to for lunch with my family had a good spread of dishes. The interiors of the restaurant are standard Indian style. The service was pretty good with the wait staff filling our waters often and bringing us naan to the table. The vegetarian options tasted really good. I don't eat meat so wouldn't want to comment on the chicken dishes. But it looked like people around us were enjoying the meats. One minor thing which could be done is having a real Indian dessert on the buffet instead of fruit custard. Customers would really like to taste some real Indian sweets after their heavy lunch. May be the buffet on the day we went there didn't have Indian dessert on the menu. I will definitely go back to Bombay Bistro on the next visit to meet family in Austin.

lunch buffet is worth a try here. i'm a big fan of indian food and this is one of the better indian joints i found thus far. it's true that i've been in austin for less than a year and i'm sure there are other places to explore but it's my spot for now. i really love their chicken tikka masala but i wish they also served my other favorite - vindaloo during lunch. btw, their garlic naan is a must!

This Indian restaurant deserves 4 stars for taste but is subtracted 1 star for price. I understand Indian food is generally expensive, but Bombay Bistro is overpriced for the quality and taste of food served. I know because I absolutely love Indian food and have been to a decent amount of Indian restaurants. Honestly, all the Indian restaurants in Austin are more or less equal. The differing factor is the price range, and that, according to Indian restaurant owners, is determined by the ambience they create for their customers. By making Bombay Bistro have a very classy setting with nice silverware, properly clothed tables, and professionally dressed waitresses, the owners believe they have a right to jack up the price. With that said, if you are a poor student like me, the buffet is pretty affordable.

  • Tom B.

I'd say the food at G'rag Mahal and/or Teji is much, much better but keep in mind you'll be eating off paper plates. If you want decent Indian food WITH silverware, this is the place! Also worth noting, BB is very expensive compared to the other 2 I mentioned (except for the lunch buffet which is a pretty good deal). I paid over $30 on 2 take out entrees. - At Teji, you would get 3 entrees plus naan, etc. for that price.

My husband and I LOVE this place!! It is amazing! My husband begged me to go here for a couple years and I was hesitant because I had never tried Indian food. I finally caved in and gave it a shot and now it is my absolute favorite restaurant!!! The naan is the best, the tikka masala rocks, Bombay grill is awesome, and tandoori chicken is perfect. My husband loves the lamb vindaloo. Also, the service is usually very good. There has only been once or twice where the service was a little slow, but it is totally tolerable because the food is so good. Anyways, if you haven't eaten here and you like Indian food, you MUST try this place!!!

As an Indian food lover, I was looking forward to going to Bombay Bistro, especially after reading overall good reviews. I must say I have been very disappointed, first because the lunch buffet was nothing exceptional, but most of all because of the very very poor hygiene of the place. While it looked pretty normal when entering the room, a visit to the restrooms, next to the kitchen, and its inhabitants (namely cockroaches running under your nose) literaly made me lost my appetite. I now deeply doubt of the quality food served and won't recommend this restaurant, unless the place is cleaned up.

Its almost a nightly ritual for me to be in bed and read the news online, browse slickdeals etc. While doing just this I found that resturant.com was having a clearance sale. Armed with the clearance code, I went to resturant.com and found so many resutrants were 60 to 80% off. So where $10 bought you $25 worth of food, I bought a $25 dealski (Erik W. I used your word lol), I got it for $2. Score!!! So the dealski with this coupon if you will, was to dine in and spend $50. Bombay Bistro is moderately priced so this would not be a daunting chance I thought. Our order: Chef's Appetizer Sampler- Holy shitake! A lot of pakora, and chicken and lamb appetizers. This came with Chutney, tamarind and mint one ofcourse! We had to pack more than half to go home. The plan after this: One order of lamb vindaloo-spicy and delicious as usual. My husband orders it everytime. One order of chicken tikka- delicious and yummy as usual. One order of the break basket- you could feed 8 people with this much naan To go order to meet $50 order: Bombay potatoes with 2 naan and rice So naturally, we ate and had 3 bags of food to go. I live and school and work so this was good news. We had food for a few days without anyone having to cook, woot woot! The interior decor has changed quite a bit since last time I went. It is very contemporary and pleasing. I also noticed (was hungover) there was a new drink menu. Menu's themselves are new and enhance the decor already present. Needless to say, I will be going back for some good eats and a few drinks reaal soon!

I love this place. My favorite is the Bombay chicken curry! But all the food is delicious and the chef really caters for your spice level just make sure you tell them. The host and waiters are very friendly and make it an enjoyable visit everytime.

Went for dinner and had marvelous experience. I went with friends from work and was a bit new to Indian food. I ate the Bistro Sampler plate and a side of rice - everything was cooked perfectly, had wonderful flavorful, and the meats were moist. Even the side of rice, with a bit of ginger flavor, was fantastic. It was far too much food for one person but I managed to eat (almost) all of it. They had a small, but well stocked bar, with some specialty drinks (mostly involving Mango flavorings). I ding one star for slightly high drink prices and a wait staff that seemed to disappear near the end of the meal. In fact, the waiter forgot to split the ticket and apologized, walked off to ring up separate tickets and then... disappeared. The manager came over 10 minutes later and did the split for us and we were enjoying the atmosphere and talk so it wasn't bad, but for a quiet Wednesday evening I'd expect them to stick with you til the end.

This is my favorite Indian restaurant for dinner. I had the lamb tikka masala, hot. It had the perfect heat I was looking for. Service was a little strange, but it worked out okay in the end. It was great that it had a full bar!

Since I was just a wee little lass, I have hated indian food. I probably only had it once at a friends house when I was about 11, at a time when I was so picky I pretty much lived on baked chicken and cheerios. I hated the smell, the texture, and visually, not appealing. My husband and friends however, love the stuff. One day long ago they convinced me to give it a try. "Hey, we're going to Indian Buffet! You'll love it, we swear!! It's spicy, you love spicy. Stop being a wuss! You can try all of the things!" So I went. And everything tasted like mushy, mealy, sweaty feet. I swore I would never touch the stuff again. Until last week. Sometimes we do things we hate for those we love (espcially when those we love bribe us with jewelry). And the husband wanted Indian so I agreed, as long as there was no buffet involved, because really, all buffet food tends to be crap. So we yelped and found what ya'll claim to be the best indian food in Austin. I went. I ate. And smack my ass and call me Sally, I LIKED IT. Did I say that? Do I like Indian food now? What does this mean?? I've entered a terrifying parallel universe where the possibility of my being wrong exisits! Maybe I only like it at Bombay Bistro but I think that's gotta say something if they converted a stubborn mule like me! It was spicy, it was flavorful! There are all sorts of heavenly lamb dishes (mmmm...laaaaaamb)! And they have a giant menu full of things that aren't curry (sorry, but that's still gross). I even look forward to going back!

Bombay bistro is an average Indian restaurant. The buffet has decent variety and some dishes are flavorful. A little on the pricier side IMO, for the kind of food that we get; I wouldn't go here unless there was a buffet. Paying $12+ for an average tasting entree (which I can make at home) is not really that appealing.

This place is GOOD! I didn't expect to leave my meal feeling so happy. I really do recommend getting the Taste of Bistro for 2 if you're going out to eat with another person... or 5. You get an appetizer, a handful of dishes and dessert (which in my opinion should always be gulab jamun, which in a perfect world, I could eat all day, every day). It's a nice survey of the restaurants offerings, and I discovered that I am absolutely in love with fish with tandoori spices thanks to their salmon tikka. I have only come here for dinner service where you order off of the menu, and I'm curious about their lunch buffet. I say go for dinner and order to get a good feel.

I came for the weekend buffet lunch. I really loved it. I'm a big fan of Indian food and have eaten in many Indian restaurants and Bombay Bistro is one of the best that I've found outside of India and in fact it competes well even with food in India. The selection (at least on weekends) is better than most and the flavors were great. Often Indian food served in the US is too bland and not spicy enough for my palette - not the case here. I'm sure to become a regular customer. It's location is a bit out of the way for me, but it's worth the drive!

I am very wary of eating indian food buffet's due to my peanut allergy, but I called ahead and asked if anything had peanuts in it. They said nothing on the buffet did... So off we went for a lunch adventure to the land of taste and flavors! Did not disappoint, the food was super fresh, amazingly tasty and the curries were spicy but not tooo much. I can not believe that I had waited so long to eat there. Absolutely flood for the quality of the food for it being a buffet. I am giving it 5 stars for the buffet, but if I need to I will write a revision to include the non buffet portion of the place. It was lunch so I didn't partake, but they did have a full bar there also. Lunch buffet price was $9.69 a person.

This is my husband and I's go to Indian food place in Austin. We usually go on Sundays, but have been during the week. (Sundays are my FAV) I have to say the Sunday buffet is THE BOMB!!! You have to try their soups - all of them are fabulous. They make REAL food. The spinach in the Saag Paneer is REAL - not frozen like so many other places. Also, on the weekends, they have the Afghan Chicken that is to die for! They also bring to the table these stuffed crepes that are always fun! They also always mix it up a little - so there will usually be something that you can try that is a little different. And the lentils- Yummy!!!! Obviously can't say enough about the place! I challenge anyone else to have better Indian food in Austin TX!

So far, this is my favorite Indian restaurant in Austin. The food is delicious and the waitstaff is always very friendly towards me! The samosas are great and I really enjoy their Malai Kofta dish! If you're in the mood to pig out buffet style, definitely check this place out. They have one every day until 2PM and it's delicious! One of my favorites, for sure. No complaints!

This place has the Best Indian Food in Austin!! I just moved here and my family is North Indian -- so I am very choosy. Their saag paneer and chicken tikka are amazing! I love their buffet on the weekends, the food is delicious. I have already been here three times in the past one month and will be going again this weekend. Thanks Mohan for the excellent service. Be sure to try the papadi chaat. Desserts ar delicious too - so save room. I have already referred my friends here and they will be using them to cater a party. Exciting!!

I had the $10 lunch buffet and was very satisfied with what I had. Chicken Tandoori fell off of the bone and was seasoned perfectly. Chicken Tikka Masala was tender, juicy, and also well spiced. There were these little sliced jalapenos rolled in curry spice and red pepper that were amazingly hot. I did not try them but my friend, who enjoys spicy food, only managed 3-4 little slices. Be prepared for those little fireballs. The only con I found was that the tables were very close together and I had trouble with bumping into my neighboring tables and with them bumping into me. Going back tonight and visiting the other location on South Lamar. --Edit 7/18/2012-- The South Lamar location is much more spacious. The dinner menu is expansive but pricey. I had Lamb Korma and was thoroughly impressed. Delicious dinner menu but expensive. Lunch buffet is definitely the way to go.

My mom always told me I could do whatever I set my heart on doing. I think that's really sweet, but I've been sunk into a life of loserdom, especially with the company I keep. It's heartbreaking, but SO and I could never even qualify for a food eating contest, let alone win. Bombay Bistro proved this to us a few weeks ago. We got the veggie platter as a starter after engaging with our outstanding host. For 6 bucks, we didn't expect a whole lot, just something to whet the appetite. Our host/waiter was kind enough to throw in an aloo cashew roll, since it wasn't included in the veggie grouping and we wanted to try it. With fairy dust in our eyes, we struggled through the last few bites (it's an effing PLATTER, people) and worried about our main dishes. The plan was to ask politely, as the food was being brought out, to have it sent right back. If they could box it up, we could nap on the tables. Do you see what kind of losers we are? But we gave our dishes a go. The malai kofta kashmiri was ummmomgyum. Then we took a quick nap. Then we tried the classic mattar paneer. "This is going to make awesome leftovers" we said in unison, unbuttoning our pants and plopping our feet on the table. Both dishes were prepared to our requested spice levels and were superb. With a $25 coupon from restaurant.com , the value was amazing for such awesome food. But I was reminded: I will never be a competitive eating champ. So thanks a lot for that.

This place is great, the food is awesome, then again you can critque my knowledge of indian food by what I've had previously, Swad off of N Lamar, Clay Pit by UT, and the Samosas from Ken's Donuts, it's a bit pricer (similar to Clay Pit prices) but still just as good, my only gripe is that when we go, we go when it's not too busy (dinner time), and the service we get is slow, trying to get out and paying the check, otherwise, no complaints about the food or people who work there!

Great little Indian Buffet for lunch - it ain't gigantic, but the food that is there ranges from good to great. Came here for the lunch buffet when we were in the area. My wife has never been to an Indian restaurant, so this was her first experience. We were both pleasantly surprised by the quality and service of strip mall Indian food. They had an okay selection of staples that were pretty fresh for a buffet. I of course had a Mango Laasi which was one of the best I've had (only had about 6 though). The curries were good (not exceptional), and the tandoori chicken was actually produced fresh from the tandor that you could see in the back. Naan is soft, warm and flavorful. Dessert selection is pretty darn bad. I love rice pudding, but only having rice pudding and watermelon for dessert is pretty tough.

  • Lisa j.

I went in tonight and it was quite good. The service was very attentive. We got the taste of India that had several different things to try. I liked the onion naan. Sometimes the bus girl was a little too lingering, but she was just doing her job. I will definitely go back!

I am not a fan of buffets, but the lunch group does so I begrudgingly tag along. Out of all the buffets in our rotation, Bombay Bistro gets the least amount of resistance from me. They keep it fresh and the naan is pretty fantastic. The service is more than adequate and nothing is stupid spicy. I look forward to trying dinner off the menu. I think I could kick it up at least one start if they can pull off the menu service. They place could be a little cleaner. The booths need a serious overhaul. I always insist on sitting at a table.

    (3)
  • Andrew H.

The buffet is fantastic. The service is always really good; I do sometimes wish they would ask if you prefer a booth or table. It gets REALLY crowded at lunch. If you go at dinner, I have to say: the cheese naan is orgasmic. I highly recommend this as one of the best Indian restaurants in Austin.

I love the tikka masala here! It's tomatoy basil goodness is like a party in my mouth. I also love that tikka masala is available in their lunch buffet. There is a huge selection at the lunch buffet. It's definitely worth the price for all the amazing curry you can eat. naan naan naan = nom nom nom.

My husband and I yelped for Indian restaurants last night, and he loves the Bombay Bistro down south, so we decided to try the one near our house up north. I loved it! The restaurant has a vibe of a place far more expensive than it actually is, which is nice. We split a veggie samosa appetizer, which is a good way to get something basic to measure against other restaurants. They were delicious! My husband got chicken in a chili sauce, and I got paneer in a onion and pea sauce. His was spicier than mine, which is perfect for us. He is of the "spicier the better" school of though, whereas I'm in the middle. Delicious. The large portions are great for sharing, and they serve them that way as well, but the best part is that they're great to reheat at lunch the next day. Indian food is one of my favorite leftovers! Service was pleasant without being overbearing. It was a really nice date place for less than $40. There were a couple of servers who seriously classed up the joint- lovely accents, nice suits, polite demeanor. We'll be back for sure.

Last night was my third time to dine at Bombay Bistro, and it was definitely the worst. The first two occasions, within the past few months, involved good food with polite and helpful service. That's why last night I brought friends with me who hadn't tried Indian food before. I thought it'd be a great place to break them in, so to speak. The food was tasty, even though my lamb korma was a little tough to chew. My newbie friends said they loved their dishes. I was happy that they were happy, and all was well. (And the bottle of Malbec was half price!) Our waiter, who was polite and helpful before the food arrived, seemed to disappear when it came to things like checking on us mid-meal, or when we were obviously finished eating. I know he was still in the near-empty restaurant, but he wasn't half as attentive as the service I'm used to getting there. That I can overlook, if my meal is tasty. I was not prepared for and cannot overlook what happened next. As we waited for the check, my friends got very still and wide-eyed, looking at each other. "Did you just see that? Oh my god!" They had seen a RAT scurry across the floor! A good sized one, from their description. If it was just one person, I might dismiss it as hallucinations. Two people? No. The rat was for reals. I mentioned this to a waiter. He didn't apologize, he just took off in a hurry to report it someone else. No manager came over..Nothin. When the bill arrived, I asked if we got a "rat discount". No reply. I should have asked to see whoever was in charge, but I just wanted to leave. Yes, I enjoyed my meal. Yes, I paid in full. We all just tried to laugh it off with rat jokes.. I hope this doesn't ruin the idea of Indian food for my friends, but I wouldn't be surpried if it did. Can't say I'll be going back to Bombay Beastro. Would you?

The saag paneer is the best I have had. Great service. Loved the goat biryani also. I will be hitting this up next time I am in Austin.

Recently when to dinner here and I was surprised they weren't that busy. It seems like most people stop here during lunch time for the buffet. The service was basically ok. They don't seem to assign a waiter to a table like a typical restaurant. They had a group of people that covered several tables. I didn't ever feel like I was waiting around on them, so it seems to work well for them. The food was fairly good too. Can't say it was the best Indian food I've had in town, but I tried someone completely off the beaten path for me, so I'd like to go back and try some of my classic favorites.

This place is one of the better North Indian restaurants in Austin. It has better than average decor and ambience for an Indian restaurant. Most importantly, the food is very good and at a reasonable price. There are plenty of vegetarian options along with numerous non-vegetarian choices. My favorite items here are the Aloo Bharwan (Its potato barrels stuffed with cheese, spices, onions, and tomatoes that are shredded and minced and then baked in a tandoor oven, topped with a cream sauce), Malai Kofta (the cream sauce is just delicious with a spicy tangyness to it), and the Peshawari Naan (bread baked in a tandoor oven stuffed with nuts). Overall most of the items I've gotten here are excellent and if you are craving very good indian food in a decent atmosphere, this is your spot.

Went to Bombay Bistro tonight for dinner with my mom, who was in from out of town. We're both big on Indian food, and with the reviews of BB being so good, we were super excited. We ordered the "Taste of Bistro", a multi-course meal for two. Started off with someveggie samosas which were really nice. Then came the full meal - a LOT of food. Tandorri chicken, salmon tikka, tandorri prawn, saag paneer, chicken tikka masala, onion kulcha, pilaf rice, kachumber salad, rasmalai and mango ice cream. Everything was good, but the highlights were really the saag paneer and the lamb korma - quite possibly the best Indian dish I've ever had. The spices were sublime, and the meat was tender, juicy, and perfectly cooked. BB only misses the 5 star mark because of the service, which wasn't bad, the wait staff not unfriendly, just a bit inattentive. I'll be back, no doubt. Great food at Bombay Bistro!

The service is a little slow but the food more than makes up for it though. I'm so happy when I leave, I forget how long it took to get the food. Be sure to order an appetizer while you wait.

Either I have been living in some sort of Faux-Indian fantasy world, in which I believed the Indian food I was eating was delicious beyond measure and incomparable to anything else, or Bombay Bistro is just better than where my bar was set at prior. Never before had I felt compelled to bum-rush a buffet and, brandishing a crude weapon made of the "Please wait to be seated" sign and a collection of forks I've taped around its edge, fend off hungry patrons while my wife filled white bags with giant "$" on them with the buffet's offerings (Because this food is money, yo) before making our getaway. Fortunately none of that occurred and we can actually go back. For a strip mall Indian buffet (Ok, so its my second strip mall Indian buffet) the food was very good. There were several things to try and each selection was just as good as the last. We'll definitely be going back...preferably with some sort of smuggling apparatus under our clothes for "take home". (Not really.) (Ok, possibly.)

With a lunch buffet this good, dinner has got to be five-stars. Certainly the best Indian lunch buffet I've had in as long as I can remember. Too much of a good thing even, as I find myself pounding down an energy drink to stave off the post-lunch torpor. For this bloat and lethargy I have to thank a whole cast of tasty villains: Vegetable pakora, whose spice made them so much more than just deep-fried wads of spinach; A rich, well-spiced saag with chunks of delicately-textured paneer; a tasty daal dish, a surprisingly good rendition of tandoori chicken; the inevitable chicken tikka masala; some bhindi masala; and finally some delicately spiced meatballs whose name I don't recall. Throw in a little rice and naan and I'm not sure how I managed it. Yep, I ate a LOT, but it was all so darned good it was hard to stop. The biggest disappointment in the whole affair was when I saw them load up some fresh naan right after I took a couple of kinda-tired triangles. No big deal - it's a buffet, after all. Service was quick, pleasant and attentive. The variety on the buffet was very good, with plenty of items I didn't get around to sampling this trip. The ambience and decor, if a bit cliched, is a cut above expectations given the generic strip-mall exterior. And now I think I'll have a nap and sleep off some of this deliciousness...

Best Indian buffet in town. It is so much better than clay armpit, a place that does not have as many delicious selections. Go for the 8.95 lunch and you won't be disappointed. This one of the best lunch values in town and it shows, judging from the large crowds of working folk with badges taking their lunch hour here. The Naan bread is fluffy and is best deployed as a soaking weapon for the dishes, which include a palatable Chicken Tikka Masala and some other dishes that I am not familiar with. I like their chickpeas too. Because I like spicy food, I always make sure to garnish my plate with the condiment best described as "spiced onions with jalapenos" which gives my plate an extra kick. Oh, they have rotating desserts that are sometimes good and sometimes not so good. But fruit is always an option as well and last time I went I ate a whole plate of watermelon. The only negative about eating here is that you and your breath will probably smell very bad afterwards.

This is really wonderful Indian food! Delicious curry, several different kinds of Naan, overall excellent! I wasn't very impressed with the Tandoori Chicken though, it was dry. Even better than the food was the service! My daughter and I went with her two very young children on a week night, and the manager went to great lengths to be certain they were happy. He sent someone to the store to get markers because they wanted to color while waiting, and spent quite a bit of time talking to them and entertaining them while we ate. Over and above all expectations!

You are a mixed blessing lunch buffet - and I resent you for it! There are so many different dishes to try but they seem to be all whitewashed and watered down (spicewise - not litery) from your evening offerings. So if you want quantity of good quality but somewhat bland indian food - this is your spot. If you want to send more for a very nice indian dinner in a pleasant atmosphere, come here in the evening or weekends. And if you want awesome Indian food - head over to Teji's. The service here is excellent in a reserved old school way. Now that i think about it this - needs to be rounded up to 3.5 stars.

I was here for dinner the other day and arrived about 15 minutes after opening for dinner (they open at 5:30PM for dinner). There were 3 or 4 other tables there that were 2-4 people and one large group of 15. Overall the place was maybe half full and I can say it was some of the worst overall service I have received in Austin. The waiter was very slow and it took forever to get our bill and then to pay. I have been here before and this is the first time I experienced such bad service. It was not for my previous trips, I would not return based on this one. The food was top notch as always. I had the Konkan Shrimp Curry which was hot and spicy (just the way I like it) and full of flavor and the cheese naan was to die for. I could make a meal out of it alone.

I came in, apprehensive at first. Turned off by the H-E-B strip center it was in, my food-sex drive totally turning down from a great engine roar to the light putter of a hatch-back on idle. I started off so ravenous, so excited, at first - thinking, "We're going to have Indian food for lunch! YES YES! YAY-YAY-YAY!" Then saw the exterior... Almost like finding a really hot chick on match.com , you're so excited, can't wait to meet them, they're going to be so hot... then once I saw the strip mall and realized it was a buffet... it was like walking into the bar to meet your date and maybe it's the lighting but your "Perfect 10 Hottie" is now a "2," and you suspect there was more than a little Photoshop there on the default picture. Certain to be disappointed, I grabbed my plate and gave the eye-roll, "Drink until she's pretty," type-gesture and stood in line for the food. Then I realized it wasn't a heat-lamped swamp of lentil-dahl and grease-ruined samosas... NO! It was a gorgeous plethora of soups, curries, curried meats, vegetables, puffy naans, and sweet pudding desserts! It was like the date was totally hot on the inside, we had a great conversation, and as we were walking to the car I realized it was just the lighting after all. My 10 was a 10! Bombay Bistro totally put out. I'm calling her again in 3 days, because... you know, don't wanna come off too eager...

This is my favorite buffet in Austin, TX (the buffet is only during the limited lunch hours, 11 am to 2 pm roughly, varies on weekends vs weekdays). OK, the south one is just as good as the north one so they tie. Being in Austin, TX, they make a little modification for the Hank Hill types; their meat dishes are less spicy, the veggie dishes more so. I like 'em both, but mostly just do the veggies as you get more spice variety.

I was dragged to this place by friends, having never tried Indian food. When I got there, the waiter took our order, asked how spicy we wanted the food, we said spicy. Every bit of the food was delicious and amazing, perfectly spicy, rich and flavorful. I've had to fight the urge to eat here for every meal since.

Absolutely disgusting and rude behavior from the owner, as well as our waiter. Wouldn't seat us at first because two of our family members were having a serious conversation right outside the door. The owner tried to hurriedly cover up the situation by making a big show of seating us himself, but kept cutting us off mid sentence as we tried to tell him the issue (I'm sure, to avoid other customers from listening in). Then, when taking our order, the waiter said we were lying about placing an order for bread....Wasn't willing to accept that he could have misheard, started talking over us to deny his fault as we unsuccessfully tried to order a drink. He also started snatching our menus away before we could finish placing our order. Said, "will you let me bring the food out before oh order you drink???" Uh no... Drinks come first. Btw, he was NOT writing our order down at all - was relying on his memory, so he's bound to make mistakes. After that, he told us "you've been showing me attitude since the moment you walked in the door". At which point, we decided to leave the restaurant without having even finished placing the order. On the way out, we tried to tell the owner what was going on, but he kept cutting us off and demanding that we sit back down. We never got an apology for the rude behavior and the owner did nothing to educate his waiter on appropriate customer interaction. Never in my life have I encountered such outright disregard for what we had to say. At least hear the customer out before telling us we're liars or ordering us to sit down.

Whatever points they gain for their food, they lose on their service. Every time I have ordered (pick up), they never even start on the order till I get there ( 'we are very busy with catering orders' is their standard excuse. ) I am not at all sold on the food either - highly 'Standardized' tasting entrees / no variation from one dish to another. The restrooms are in stark contrast to the restaurant's nice decor...poorly maintained. Still, seems popular, so I feel I am in the minority here.

I have been here before for their lunch buffet, which is pretty good. Tonight we decided to try their dinner since my coworker is convinced that they beat Saffron when it comes to taste and quantity of food. We started off with a "Yelp Samosa", which is one Samosa instead of two (not complaining cause free is free, right?). It was perfectly crispy on the outside and the filling had just the right amount of spice. For our entrees, I chose the Lamb Roganjosh and my honey got the Aloo Gobi. We also got the garlic naan, which was pretty good. They definitely give a lot of food for your money, which can be a good or bad thing depending on your waistline goals. The service was okay; our hostess was very attentive, but our drinks remained unfilled for most of the meal. If I would complain about something , it would be that. Overall, I think their strong point is their buffet, which is reasonably priced and probably the best in town. You won't be disappointed for dinner, but you won't be wowed either.

The service is awkward here. I think it's mostly s language barrier. But the food here is stupid good. The way they make the tikka masala and the vindaloo, it's very fresh tasting and not overpowering the meats. I have never had indian that had such a fresh clean taste that you could clearly each spice and the purpose of what they were going for. The garlic naan was fluffy on top and crispy of the bottom, perfection. Heaven. They did boot charge us for the Naan nor did they charge us for the bowl of peas we asked for. The chai was fantastic. Definitely will be coming back to try more!!!! Parking and easy to get to. Thank you for fellow yelpers recommending this place!!!

Definitely a great Indian buffet! There was a good variety (North and South Indian food) and I was impressed that they had Chaat as part of the buffet which was something you don't normally see. I was also happy that the food in the buffet was good quality and was also not too spicy. I managed to fill myself up incredibly quickly though and didn't get to sample everything. The only thing I remember not loving was the gazar (carrot) halwa which just wasn't as good as my mom's. I love going to Indian buffets in general because they give you so much more value than ordering a single Indian dish. And in this case, at ~$12 person I think, it was definitely worth it. I don't know when the next time is I'll be back since I felt grossly full after (my own fault I'm sure haha) but I would come back!

I hit this place up for the lunch buffet and enjoyed it. It's not the best Indian buffet ever and it's certainly not the best in town, but it's probably the best you're going to get when you're in this very white area of town. The buffet price was $10 during the week and I thought it was a steal at first. The spread was always full and contained around ten dishes. Everything tastes like a $10 Indian buffet should, but I'm really going to question the quality of food that's being served. I've never had a problem with Indian cuisine, but around 30 minutes after finishing my meal, I began to have sharp stomach pains. There might be an issue with food prep and storage here. I wouldn't advise coming here at all even though the lunch price is tempting. Just head down south for some better places when you can.

Hands down, best bindhi masala I've had since I was in Long Beach 4 years ago. It's taken that long to find this one dish made the way I had it back then, which was down right delicious. The chicken tikka masala that my husband ordered was also delicious. The only reason they lost a star is because the service lacked some luster, some care, some smiles, which makes a good bit of difference for me when visiting a food establishment, or any establishment at that. If this one area is improved, I'd easily give this place 5 stars. Until then, I can rely on some kick ass bindhi masala for dinner whenever we need to visit The Joint next door.

I've been here several times and the food has always been excellent and the customer service spectacular! I've ordered several items off the menu and from my experience I can't imagine you could go wrong with anything. You can truly taste the love that is cooked into the food here. Since I have such a warm spot in my heart for Bombay Bistro I decided that was the atmosphere in which I wanted to spend my birthday dinner recently. Boy am I glad I decided on that! You know sometimes you go out and your evening can be quickly spoiled by poor service? Well I can nearly guarantee that won't happen here. I literally feel like I'm treated as family here. Ravi (the manager I believe) checked in on us after we placed our order and upon discovering it was my birthday he hooked up a hell of a deal. I was so humbled. Seriously, you can't go wrong here. This place knows what they're doing on all fronts.

We were starving and I was asking to pick a place to eat so I Yelp'd it and this place came up. This place had a very nice selection of items, all piping hot! We came right at a good time when it was quite busy so food was being replaced and cooked as fast as it was eaten. Their creamy vegetable soup was so delicious, their heat index level on a lot of items was quite high for my taste as I was sweating bullets. :-) Their butter chicken was thick and full of flavor, the saag was just the right consistency, and forgot the names of the other dishes, I wasn't disappointed with anything. Great service, great tasking fresh food, would love to come back and try their dinner menu as I bet it is 10x better.

This place was painfully mediocre. We were here on a Friday night, around 8pm. Let's start with the service. We were seated but what was a seriously unhappy hostess. She looked like she hated her life, and we when we didn't see her later in the evening, we decided she probably quit in the middle of her shift. We sat for a LONG time before anyone came to take our drink order, so long, in fact, that we were ready to order apps and our meal by that point. There were no utensils or napkins given to us until we had to ask for them. At no point during the meal did any dirty dishes get picked up off the table, and we had to ask for water (when our glasses were empty), ask for carryout containers, and then ask for the check. Just generally terrible service all-around. I will note that when we asked, things got delivered quickly and efficiently, but we had to ask for EVERYTHING. Next, the food. For Indian food, the meal was just thoroughly underseasoned. It was spicy, but all other seasonings were just underdone. Bland is not a good way to describe Indian food, and the food was definitely bland. We had the saag paneer and the paneer makhni. Cocktails and beer were good. Overall, I don't think we'll be coming back here. Many better choices around town.

$14 for Saturday lunch buffet (tax included) Friendly service! Fresh food... Busy on Saturdays so they kept refilling everything, which was awesome! About 10 different hot items ranging from dishes I've never tried with eggplant to lentils to the more commonly seen Chicken Tikka Masala and Saag. A variety of chutney sauces. 2 dessert items: the white rice pudding is delicious. Fresh fruit. Chickpea salad. Hot idli, rice, and naan to pair with everything else! What I loved: fresh naan-- when it came out piping hot!!! Crispy and fluffy all at the same time! So perfect! Huge variety of dishes to try! What could be better: their chicken in chicken dishes dishes were pretty dry & lamb was difficult to chew. Overall- good if you're craving Indian & hungry!

This is probably one of the best Indian buffets I have ever been to. I wish I new the all names of the food I ate so I can write a more detailed review, but instead you'll have to base my judgement on my addiction with Indian food. I tried many different places already and only a few can compare to the variety and quality of food. Hope to come back again one day! Next time I will be sure to write down the names of all the different foods. At least I remember my favorites such as Saag Paneer, Butter Chicken (or Chicken Makhani/Tikka Masala), Raita, and naan of course!

I'll be moving out of the area soon and am sad that I won't have Bombay near me anymore. I read something about another location though, so I'll have to look into that. First, I have to say that every time I've came in for pick-up, they have always greeted me warmly and with a smile. Someone mentioned that there is a strong curry smell when you walk in-really?! Have you ever been to an Indian restaurant before? All of them smell like that because it's such a pungent spice..This restaurant in particular smells like a heavenly tandoori oven, which always gets my appetite started. Last night I ordered pick-up and when I showed up there was an issue with my order, but the manager immediately made it right. These guys know how to properly run a business, and their food is always great.

Lousy service, let's begin with that!! The management and the half wits that manage the phone lines to cater to the clientele are aptly telling customers who call them at 9:30 that they can't sit and eat at the restaurant, then maybe you should shut the damn place at 9:30 and not at 10:00 so that people don't drive 30 miles to come have dinner at your loudly ran and managed establishment! Avoid this place like the plague!! Here is an update for anyone that is interested!! Please find attached the most amazing response from the manager of this business Mr. Preetesh V., according to him I should find a different place to go eat at and I should manage myself better because I showed up at 9:30, 30 minutes before the place closed and that I shouldn't advise them how to run their business and that I misbehaved because I asked to be seated, Mr Preetesh V., needs to learn how to speak to patrons and not show his true class by addressing situations and people without even learning about the whole issue at hand first!!

We came here for the lunch buffet on a Saturday. We were excited about the variety on the menu and hadn't had Indian in a LONG time. The price of the buffet was decent and the spread was good. I had never had Afghan tandoori chicken, but it was great. Their lamb curry was also really good. They had several paneer dishes (I LOVE PANEER), which brought a big smile to my face. Their naan was nice and buttery. The only thing about the food that it wasn't hot! Everything was mildly warm and by the time I got to my table some of it had gotten cold already. I am sure the flavors would have been a lot better if the food had been hot when I ate it, but no one likes eating cold food. I had higher hopes for their desserts. One of them was a weird looking chocolate mousse that looked like quicksand when you scooped it into your bowl. Their fruit was decently fresh, though. All in all, the price was decent and the menu was theoretically good. The cold food was a bit of a deal breaker for me, so I don't know if I will be coming back to give them another try. Hopefully it was just a fluke and no one else will experience what I did!

I really enjoyed this buffet style Indian food. They had a great assortment of meat dishes, especially curries. I was blown away that everything was gluten free other than the bread. Even the breaded/fried spinach leafs which they informed me were chick pea flour(meal maybe). The staff was really nice and the atmosphere was inviting. We will return!

Lemme explain that I am married to an Indian, travel to India all of the time (various states and regions), hang out in the Indian community, etc. So, I feel pretty comfortable in my assessment here. This is your standard North Indian buffet, slightly above average, worth while to keep coming back. We've gone three times for weekend buffet and once for dinner. Service is good. Love their imli. Something about it is spot on. I love paneers and koftas and I think they do an excellent job on these two fronts. Tandoori chicken could be improved, but not a deal breaker for me We will be back!

Really fast to-go. We love to order from our office and go pick it up for everyone for lunch. They have something for everyone. I love love their sesame tofu and rice! It is perfect! Crunchy/delicious ! Lunch is super busy inside, but that's the case for any restaurant that is worth it

This is my favorite lunch Buffett on the weekends. They have the extra "make your own chat" table, and the delicious marinated chicken and more dishes than during the week. Yesterday they even had mussels. You can even ask for a Dosa and it's made fresh and included in the Buffett! And I read some people like Clay Pit better but the food here is more authentic than Clay Pit, so It depends on what you are used to. I love this place.

Does anyone else think this place has lost its shine? The last couple of times I've been here, the fried spinach was all clumped up in a big doughy mess. No fried cauliflower. Far more "fried vegetable dumplings" (translation: dough) than are needed in a buffet. A couple of the sauces had a definite sour tang. Fewer chutneys. The beef curry tasted like average old American beef stew, minus any vegetables. The Chicken Tikka Masala was tough and dry (for the first time). Okra Soup, 2 times in a row. All that together makes me feel like they are cutting corners and not measuring up to their glory days. Disappointing.

So this is the place that fixes my Indian craving . I know exactly how to order now. From the tandoor - order the lamb tenderloin instead of chicken . The lamb is very flavorful and tasted like it sat in a yogurt nutty marinade full of bright spices overnight. I love the lamb rogan josh here too. We order everything DESI spicy- that means super spicy if u like it hot ;-) ( the first few times we couldnt seem to get it spiced enough and i would bring extra cayenne in my purse IM CRAZY i know ) anywho .. top it off with garlic naan . Its great indian food and is always served PIPING hot !

I have been to lot of Indian food places and this one by far is my favorite one. I come in for take out and they do me right. I get fresh Naan right off the grill and my favorite dishes are always there waiting for me to pile it up from the buffet.

And it just keeps getting better! The owner/staff are SO SUPER nice and the food continues to be consistently great! Serving sizes were large the first few visits here, but now I think they recognize us and are even more generous. Have ordered several items off the menu, but our favorite is the Butter Chicken (which you have to ask for). Perfect basmati rice with crisp green peas. The naan is the bomb and the veggie samosas rock! Bombay Bistro has made my fondness for Indian cuisine turn into more of an obsession! I love all the complex flavors that they successfully blend together to perfection! Just goes to show that a restaurant doesn't have to be five star dining to put out true quality food and fantastic customer service! Thanks BB! p.s. Still haven't tried the buffet, but will try soon.

BONES, no meat! If zero stars could be an option, that's what they would receive. Excited to try my very first Indian cuisine I'm sad to say it will probably be my last. Not only were the containers half full, the rice was under cooked, and I received goat bones in my curry instead of actual meat. $50 mistake!

Go here for the occasional Indian buffet when you crave Mughlai food (from Northern India). The ambiance and service is very good. The price is almost reasonable at $14. I usually compare my experience at Indian dine-in restaurants to the Amber India chain of restaurants in Silicon Valley. Amber India probably is the best experience with Indian food in a US restaurant when it comes to taste, ambiance, service, etc. Though their prices are higher because its an upscale chain. Compared to Amber India, the food is not that good at Bombay Bistro. Buffet selections at Bombay Bistro do not vary much and the taste is not as fresh because they probably bulk prepare their curry sauces for the week and refrigerate. Hence, you will like Bombay Bistro less if you frequent this place. But this is Austin and there is nothing better taste-wise for miles around this area except for Hot Breads on McNeil Dr. Hot Breads, though downscale, is more expensive, pound for pound, and their best offerings are Southern Indian cuisine, not Mughlai.

One of our go to spots when we visit Austin, and feel like stuffing ourselves with Indian food. We are always greeted at the door and seated within a couple of minutes, even when they are pretty busy. The lunch buffet is perfect for when we want a quick in and out sit down lunch, and the times we've been, the food is constantly being replenished with fresh helpings straight from the kitchen. They always have a good variety of veg and non-veg, and fresh fruit and dessert items. Worth the visit.

This one is definitely one of the best Indian restaurants in Austin! The food and service both are good. I loved their dal bhukara and paneer tikka. The portion size is good too. Will definitely visit again!

Awesome food! Love this place! NOTE TO PARENTS my experience here would have been FAR better if you had asked your child to behave instead of participating in a rousing game of peekaboo with him! Good lord what is wrong with people?

We had take out from there. I had the Lamb Kadai and it was amazing. My spouse had the Tikki Masala and it was spot on.

Being a Mumbai girl, I think I can authoritatively say that this is the best chaat in Austin. Try the Sev Puri, amazzzinnggg! Reasonably priced too.

Full disclosure: This review is for their lunch buffet and I'm not a big buffet guy. When I'm in town I always try and go for their lunch buffet, vegetarian always. Service is prompt, the buffet is always fresh and refilled when necessary, and the price is very reasonable. Now, if anyone has any suggestions for a better Indian lunch in the arboretum area I'm all ears!! Cheers!!

I had a great experience! I've never had Indian food before, I went there with a "meetup" group. The chef brought out free yummy appetizer for us to sample (some kind of tomatoey spicy cauliflower). They helped me with what to order since I had no idea, never eating Indian food before. I got the chicken tikka masala and my date got the chicken chili, both were great. Next time I'll get some rice to go with the tikka masala. I had some yummy garlic naan too. Great service, learned about a different culture and had fun with some new people.

Terribly staffed and mediocre food. Combine that with a filthy restaurant and you have a stereo typical indian restaurant. Check out biryani pot instead

Great Indian food, great service, nice ambience, this was a great place to take some friends for good Indian food. The saag paneer, tikka masala, garlic naan, punjabi kadhi with pakora, and mutton curry were very good. The only thing that was a little off was that after we were done eating, a waiter came by and put some freshly made dosas on our table. We said we hadn't ordered it, and he said that it was part of the buffet. I wished that had come out earlier while we were still eating! Besides that, it was a perfect lunch buffet. Will definitely come back here again.
