A couple friends and I dined here and the overall experience definitely left us all wanting. First, the hosts, a pair of very young girls, were anything but helpful. Instead of warmly greeting us at the door when we entered, we were all but made to feel like we were an intrusion as they chatted with one another and hovered over their computer screen. Finally, we got some attention and only after *we* asked -- i.e. the information wasn't offered -- we sat outside to order drinks while we waited for a table to become available. The cocktail server was terribly inattentive. It took about 20 minutes or so for her to even come out, and then another 15 minutes or more until our drinks arrived. Another group outdoors thanked us heartily when we stopped the server from darting away and instead directed her to them as they were waiting a long time too for service. That level of service isn't acceptable anywhere, and especially so at the price point this place commands. When one of our party returned to the hostesses for an update, he was ignored for a long while. They weren't busy serving or greeting other customers, but instead just kept their backs to him while they chatted and discussed whatever was on the video screen. Really terrible. We did ultimately get a table (upstairs) and had a great server for dinner who was knowledgeable, gave good recommendations, and was very attentive, but given our start there we're undecided if we will give them a second try.

Wow. Incredible service and a comfortable atmosphere. We sampled their unique cocktails for hours and were never disappointed.

YEAH! The only bar I've given 5-stars so far. An ever-changing, always good bar menu. Spectacular choices, always, never been disappointed with a drink. It's cozy and quiet (for a bar) too, with knowledgeable staff and offering great bites from 2nd, it's one every craft cocktail lover must add to their regular list.

We tried to get after dinner drinks on the lovely patio. The blond waitress in the longer black dress was so quick to take our order and had glasses of water out in minutes. Yay! Then we waited for our drinks. And waited. And waited. And waited. And waited. And waited. We finally walked out. I tried to tell our server we had given up, but never found her. Will try it again sometime and hope the dining room staff have it more together than the bar staff.

Spacious, comfortable, breezy bar inside (especially on a hot night)! Came here for late nights drinks on a Friday night. Good selection of drinks, and service was good. After we grabbed drinks from the bar inside, we made our way out to the patio area and managed to snag seats on the couches. The patio is a good area to relax & people watch and the seats were so comfortable!

We stopped in here during my birthday night out for drinks around town. We started at Peche and I wish we would have stayed there. I do not mind spending hard earned cash on expensive sipping drinks when they are good, but I was so unimpressed with this place. The patio was nice and our sweet pregnant waitress was great, but it was packed and I didn't enjoy either drink we got. We had the GREEN RIVER: Vodka * Basil * Grapefruit Oil * Lime * Green Chartreuse * Force Carbonated - 11.00 and the CRITICAL DARLING: Earl Gray Bourbon * Fermented Apple + Honey 'Cider' * Canton Ginger Foam 12.00. 23.00 bucks for two unenjoyable drinks - done!

Everything we had here was delicious! I drank the green river and sampled the beef tartar and the black and bleu pizza. OMG so good! It's not cheap but your paying for quality and a lovely atmosphere.

Manager took care of our valet but we didn't stay . The service was nonexistent and after 10 minutes we just left. ... was afraid to ask about anything because no one looked pleased to have us there . Menu basically dropped with no smile or acknowledgement ... kind of a first in austin ... and not cheap here, but our 10 dollar valet was comped by management

Although this place wasn't really my style I'm still going to give it a good rating because it's a very nice spot! It's for more of a mature crowd in my opinion. Very upscale and classy! Definitely not a spot for college kids in my opinion! My bf and I ordered an appetizer that was very disappointing! We ordered the potato Gnocchi tots on the "to share" part of the menu! It came with, I kid you not, one handful of tots! Probably 8 tiny tots "to share" for $8. Yeah I was disappointed about that and they weren't even delicious. My bf ordered a beer that he liked and I ordered the Heckle and Jeckle off there "house favorites" part of the menu and it was just not what I was expecting at all. To me, it tasted like a hand grenade, kind of gross. It was decorated nicely though! Our server was nice though and when I told her I didn't really like my drink she offered me something else instead which was sweet. I didn't want to be that person because I've worked as a server before so I just kept it and finished it. Again this place was a little bit too mature for me but I know there are people that this would be perfect for so go for it!

Its definitely a more upscale place for a happy hour, and a good place to grab a drink while waiting for a table at Second Bar, which is partnered with Bar Congress (since going through Second Bar appears to be the only entrance) . It is pricey costing about $12 for every drink I've had there, which is normally wine or Manhattans, and has a very crowded feel since it is a small area, with a 'shotgun house' type floorplan. When you enter from Second bar, which I think is behind a curtain from what I remember, there are about 6 tables along one wall to the right, and a long bar running the course of the narrow room to the left, with a very narrow area in between, usually filled with overflow since both the tables and bar are often occupied with very dressed up people: think cocktail dresses and sport coats or suits... all abundantly perfumed. Once your table is ready in Second bar, or if you would like to use the bathroom--which is in Second Bar--you will need to worm your way through the groups of standing people, excusing yourself for interrupting their conversations and asking them to move aside briefly. The food is usually pretty good; the gnocci tater tots are a good appetizer. I overall like the place, because while I hate how crowded it can be, people are usually dressed up, which is nice once in a while. Go in expecting to spend some money, deal with a wait, and having good drinks/food.

I read that this place was the place to go for a good cocktail in Austin. I was not disappointed. I had an evening to myself for dinner, so decided to check it out. Fantastic whiskey selection and a fine cocktail menu. There were a handful of creative cocktails on the menu which I either tried or ordered, and all of the traditional cocktails one would expect at a nice place. They were all nicely crafted and well-balanced. Had the spiced nuts as a snack and then the burger with seared foie gras on top. The burger was done to perfection and the foie just added to it. The staff was helpful in navigating the selections and also about recommending places in Austin to explore.

Overrated. What cocktail bar, fully loaded, can't make a classic cocktail off menu. I was very unimpressed with their inability to create my Ramos Gin Fizz. I've been to many places where I could offer up a flavor profile & they would make a drink. Bar Congress sticks to their menu. I think they have potential to be a great cocktail bar should they open up the choices of drinks they serve up. I will say, that there are some drinks that I have tasted that were quite tasty. The Vieux Carre most notably (to me) was a nice cocktail to enjoy.

It's a little more upscale than most Austin bars but sometimes you want that. While out on date night with my wife I insisted we stop in here for a night cap while we sat out in beautiful 75 degree weather. And it was perfect. Great drinks and little appetizers were just what we needed. Solid beer, wine, and cocktail list. And an even better ambivance. 60/365

Absolutely obnoxious service, from the host to everyone else we encountered. The host felt it necessary to explain to my husband that Congress is a "very high end restaurant" with higher prices than their 2 other restaurants. Thanks for pointing that out! We are from New York City; we have eaten at many "very high end restaurants" and have never been spoken to or treated so poorly. I completely regret even stepping foot in here and wasting part of my evening. Just because you had a write up in a magazine does not warrant such abhorrent service.

  • Amanda M.

The hubby and I had a drink here before dinner at Congress next door. The drinks were very tasty and bartenders were fun to chat with. Its an upscale bar, so expect to spend a little more for your drink ($10-$14 for a cocktail), but it's worth it.

Bar Congress is the bar that is shared and located in between farm-to-table eatery Second Bar + Kitchen and upscale restaurant Congress. A large group of us stopped by here after dinner before heading out to hit other bars in Austin. This is a small, fancy bar. It's classy and elegant. Opposite the bar is a row of high-backed cushioned seating with tables, each set up for two. Atmosphere is luxurious and candle-lit, making it an ideal spot for an intimate date. The drink menu is impressive. They stock a lot of high quality stuff. A 16-bottle Enomatic wine dispenser is showcased behind the bar. This dispenser allows the bar to serve fine wines by the glass. Very cool. Friendly, outstanding service. I don't remember our server's name, but she was stunning. Restrooms are located inside Second. Bar Congress is located at the corner of Congress Ave. and 2nd St.

I took a chance on Congress again. It was completely worth it. I had the lucky opportunity of heading there in my most painful of shoes and a fur lined coat, and that seemed to ward off all the bad spirits. Had a great cocktail, but my true delight was when I ordered a scotch. The bartender asked us what my favorite scotch was, then suggested some adjectives (peaty, malty, smoky bold..) and asked which appealed to you the most. And bam, amazing scotch appeared.

I think this was the last time I had foie gras. I forgot I was in Austin after the California ban and couldn't believe my eyes thet FOIE GRAS was on the menu! I was out in Austin visiting my sister for the weekend and this gastro pub was highly recommended by my friend. We ordered 3 specialty drinks which were all delicious and beautifully put together. I forgot the names of our drinks but they were all solid and tasty. What we ordered: - Truffle Pizza - AMAZING! It's a must get! - Foie Gras- DEVINE! I think licked my plate! - Kim Chi beef tartare - GOOD. I like the Asian fusion twist but I think this wasn't anything special next two above. Overall, this is a great place to dine with great food and awesome drinks! I would love to come back and sample the other dishes when I return. Enjoy!

Staying downtown and needed a spot to grab a quick but well made healthy bite and came back to Bar Congress. This little gem is between Congress (expensive formal dinner) and Second Bar and Kitchen (causal), and the highlight it is serves a hybrid menu from the two restaurants. There bartenders work hard to make great cocktails and wine list is pretty solid for a small spot. I stated with the Kale chips, baked with sesame and chickpeas. I enjoyed the salty flavor with crunch, but better for sharing as a they are a little rich. Next I had the grilled snap pea salad with manchego, pancetta and calabrese chiles. It was delicious but the flavor wasn't consistent- some bites

This is not a perfect place but it has a lot of big big plusses. This is a great place to do some first rate drinking. First, the negatives then the positives. The positives trump the negatives. On the downside. The room is a thin narrow railroad-car like space which is an afterthought for the other bars and restaurants around it. So it feels claustrophobic. If you are sitting at the bar, rather than a table you may not care ... but when I drink I like big beautiful spaces. (Put me in the forty story atrium of a hotel with good drinks and I am happy - assuming I am not paying hotel ripoff prices for the drinks.) The decorating is first rate given the space, but you still feel like you are in a railroad car. The food is overpriced and of mixed quality. Quantities are cough cough very modest for what you get. And they put fancy ingredients in sauces or on top to increase the price - - - that aren't always particularly convincing masks of the fact that the base food is often uneven. You can get lucky and eat well. And on the flip side .... Not all the house mixed drinks are marvelous. Some people like mixed drinks that taste very mild to cover up the strong taste of the alcohol involved. Yeah - I know the aesthetics - - - but they pour some fine fine alcohol into those drinks, and I vastly prefer drinks that allow those fine fine ingredients to show. Now the Upside ..... When their bartenders hit with a mixed drink, they produce something absolutely amazing. My particular wow wow wow favorite is a Gin and Hops concoction with several hop flavored ingredients complementing a first rate gin. I wish I could drink those forever. However - strange as it seems for a place that sells itself on its house cocktails - those are only the second most interesting reason for hanging out at Bar Congress. Reason number one is an awesome awesome collection of rare high quality spirits - above and beyond the standard set of been there done that single malt scotches. They have one of the most impressive collections of artisanal gins I have seen in Austin - a great set of Amaros - a tremendous set of ryes - a surprising set of Irishes - interesting bourbons and local whiskeys - and a lively collection of miscellaneous liquors and liqueurs. This is a little bit like hanging out at Spec's but you don't have to buy the $40 bottles yourself - you can just sample off their absolutely positively first rate collection. So my own inclination is to work my way through the wonderful collection of goodies behind the bartender - mixing it up with a house cocktail when variety is called for. Given my comments on the food, this is a drinking establishment and not an eating establishment. However for a drinking establishment, I holds my interest.

So I went here yesterday for dinner with a couple of friends. This time we didn't sit at the bar, instead got a table. Now the food, the drinks were amazing as usual. Why am I taking 2 stars away? They seated us, someone dropped off water for us, but no one came to take our order for about 25 minutes. That is unacceptable. Servers were walking by us, other people were getting food etc. but not one made eye contact with us, or ask us if we had been helped. Finally we had to stop someone and ask them if someone was going to take our order. Finally a server came out and apologized about some confusion as to who's territory that table came under. I hope things are a little better next time for a restaurant of such reputation and food!

Great food, great ambiance. It's a nice option more casual than Congress restaurant on one side and and a quieter option than 2nd Street Bar on the other.

We didn't really like this place and it's the reason we never went to Congress (restaurant). The food was what we are calling forced (I know that's sound pretentious but that's the spot on adjective) and the drinks were that good. I asked the guy for their most popular drink and he brought be a glass with about 3 shots of gin in it, 3 ice cubes, and a spoon with unsweetened apricot jam. T'was nasty. Our bill for 2 people was $180 which normally isn't a point of focus unless it gets a one or two star.

Bar Congress is another notch on the belt of the "sophisticated Austin" that has cropped up in the last couple of years. Meaning, this place doesn't seem very Austin at all but more Big City. Yes, I am a dive bar kinda girl (East Siiiiiiide!!!) however I pride myself for also being both beer and hot dog yet steak and wine kinda gal too. Having said that prepare to bust out your Sunday best for Bar Congress. Of course it is located on the ground level of the Austonian, the largest building in Austin. This requires sophistication, elegance and class (ahem). The inside is pretty, the people are pretty, the bar is pretty, the bar menu is pretty. The outside seating is nice but being on the corner of 2nd Street and Congress it is kinda loud. They also play music via speakers on the outdoor patio adding to the noise. I would have given this place another star if I weren't disappointed in the cocktails. I had the Absinthe Suissesse which is made with Tennyson Absinthe, fresh cream, farm egg, orgeat and orange flower. I love Absinthe, but this drink was not very great. And it took them over 20 minutes to make and bring out the drinks. My friend had wine and she enjoyed it; I switched to wine after not wanting to finish the Absinthe and thought it was nice but it wasn't great. I am willing to maybe try Bar Congress again but it may be hard to tear myself away from Trace at the W hotel for fancy nights out--they have my favorite cocktail bartender in all of downtown.

My husband & I went for a late night drink outside, waited 10 minutes to get a drink menu from the less than polite waitress. After being rudely handed the menu we never saw the waitress again to order and were left to walk out.

I started with the Manhattan 13, which was strong. No complaints on that. The steak tartare was small and disappointing. Not bad, just not what I expected. The lobster and goat cheese arancini were tasty little bites. Hard to share, took a lot of willpower to hold back. There were only five, I think. I realized that if I wanted to leave satiated, I'd better get something substantial, so I went for the burger, a bit steeply priced at $14 but good. I enjoyed the sparkling rosé they had by the glass, which was nice, but there are no wines by the glass under 10 and most are 12 and above. Just short of a $60 tab per person, we left full and happy. Will I be back? Maybe.

All i can say is the table and chairs on the outside patio are DISCUSTING The tables are covered with food stains, and the back of the plastic chairs, the food is decent enough and service fair...

Why yes, I will take a spicy mestizo cocktail. This cocktail is so delicious I have to force myself to slowly savor its spicy goodness instead of my normal gulp job. The price and the snob factor here are pretty high but sometimes you want to have a classy cocktail and feel snobbish in your new dress or unwalkeable heels. When I say cocktail, I mean it. Now I don't know much 'bout them fancy drinks but from where I'm sitting, the delicately poured and designed cocktails seem like something straight out of New York's finest. Bars, not the po-lice. It's gotten enough accolades and applause from the media to convince me that what they're pouring is the real deal. Now if I could just make a lot more $$ and become a fixture, I feel like my social cred would skyrocket.

I had the gnocchi. It was one of the best dishes I've ever had. The bar is super intimate and the service is supurb! I highly recommend the Moscow Mule!

I love the outdoor patio here, even though you sit at the corner of congress, it's removed enough from Congress that traffic isn't a bother. Bonus points for being across the street from my office. We shared a lovely bottle of wine (which was wonderful). I nibbled on the brussel sprouts and margarita pizza... neither were overly delicious. Service was friendly, if lacking details (we weren't given enough silverware, so the food arrived and we eventually had to get up and find someone to give us silverware). I'd happily return for happy hour or to meet up with friends, but I'm not sure this would be my 1st, 2nd, or 10th pick...

This is like a small overflow area if you can't get walk-in seats at Congress. The menu is not the same, but when you're ready to get your eats and drinks on, you don't make waves. The drink menu has several signature cocktails unique to Bar Congress. They're all good, but I recommend anything with gin. The inside seating is rather small, but there is also an outdoor patio that can seat a few moderately sized groups. The service here was friendly. The apps were not memorable, but we managed to clean our plates anyways. The drinks were swell.

We went looking for decent cocktails in Austin. The first place we tried got nixed, so we ended up at Bar Congress, which hadn't even been on my list. It was amazing. I had a hopped gin and tonic and a rum old fashioned (!?). My friend had an excellent vieux carre. The charcuterie plate was excellent. We got a pizza made with bleu cheese, pork belly, truffles, and dates. It was fantastic. I was crushed when I realized that I had to give up and go home, especially because if I'd just gone to Bar Congress first, I'd have been able to have one more drink there. There is no question that I'll be going back here when I'm in Austin again.

The bar, wedged in between Second Bar & Kitchen and Congress restaurant, oozes cool. I love the compact space, narrow bar and coveted booth seating, all in keeping with the prohibition era theme. Recently I discovered a favorite new cocktail, the "A Nise Anise." Fair warning, you'll need an affinity for anisette flavored beverages in order enjoy this drink as much as I do. The retro mustached bartender mixes it up with absinthe, bitters, lemon and ginger beer....and it's a very pretty drink to behold, tinged with a bright red splash. This place also wins a place in my heart for "Best Truffle Fries in Austin." Even fellow Yelper Tyler J., who rants and raves about there being no such thing as authentic truffle oil in foods and thus declaring them all ridiculous, devourers these fries (sometimes 2 orders at a time).

Beautiful bar. Great location. Here's my nitty gritty: Service - 5/5 Bar - 5/5 Food - 4/5 Value (food) - 3/5 Really great place with innovative dishes and a solid bar with excellent cocktails. While the food was very good, it wasn't great, which cost 1 star from me. And maybe it was because everything was very small for a not-so-small price. I'm not squeamish about spending money but I didn't see the value....our endive and pear salad had 2 very tasty bosc pear wedges and about 3 leaves of endive for $10. Similarly, the Tete de Cochon (pig face) was very good but very small for $16. That said, I'm a big fan of everything here but the food price-portion ratio. The service was superb and altogether a great place to frequent if you can afford it.

I love that when you go to Bar Congress, it feels like a bar in a cubby. This place is not a dive bar by any means; quite the opposite. It's classy, chic and upscale, with prices that match. Thirty dollars for two cocktails? Holy crap. That being said, the drinks are both unique and divine. This is bartending art. My first drink was something tropical, and then I tried one with egg white. Oh my God, best drink of my life. This is the perfect place to meet up for a sexy, extravagant date. Or, if you just want to get your James Bond on, it's perfect for that as well.

  • Alex C.

The only two things that make this place not the epitome of perfect for a classy downtown cocktail bar? Space and the prices. Space, unfortunately, is tiny. It's a bar about 20 people long, a bench with tables and chairs running along the opposing wall, and a tiny walkway inbetween. TINY. Not much to be done about it, but then again, this isn't the kind of place I expect to be around a hundred people. Note, though, that you can use 2nd Kitchen's outdoor seating area if you're a smoker. Prices are actually reasonable for Cocktail Culture - Haddington's and Peche are comparable - so take it or leave it. You either mind $10 for a drink made with fancy stuff and by an artisian of his craft, or you don't. I don't. Singularly the best bartenders in town - these guys know their stuff, and can create cocktails that haven't been served in 65 years in about a minute and a half with no internet searching. Highly recommended, but don't crowd it. Classy joint for classy folk. Hipsters please die in a fire before coming here.

Very small and classy bar catering to 30 something's and up... Definitely not a college hangout. The bar staff is not overly friendly but they mix fantastic drinks. Unfortunately the bar food was not at all interesting or tasty, actually it was awful. You would think a nice bar with innovative drinks would have equally good food ...NOT! We will go back for the cocktails but we will eat elsewhere.

I decided to give the Congress trio another shot and was delighted. After a miserable food experience at Second Bar + Kitchen, I was hesitant about going back, but was happy I did. The bartender, Jason, was very friendly, hospitable, and knowledgeable. I split the veal slider and the scorched escolar with my company. The portions were a lot smaller than anticipated, but they made up for it in flavor. The veal slider was cooked nicely and the sweetbreads were cooked perfectly. I think they use the same veal as they do with their meatballs because they tasted similar in terms of seasoning, but this time it was moist and delicious. The scorched escolar was also very tasty. The fish was the slightest bit overdone, but still had a nice flake to it. The flavors of the cherries, almonds, and escolar worked nicely together. There was also a sauce paired with it, which I think was yogurt-based, that provided the perfect amount of acid to balance the dish. Overall, I'd say the food was a winner this time.

Bar Congress has the best ice cubes in the world. Bold talk you say? Prove it you say? OK, here's the deal. They are made with double filtered water so they impart no flavor to the drink, and they have that cool transparency effect. They are perfect cubes. No dimples or holes. They are frozen at what must be lower temps than usual because they don't melt away in a few minutes. They hang in there for the long haul. They are large. I rarely measure ice cubes, but I would ball park them at an inch and a half to two inches in diameter. That's some big swingin' ice, Jeeyumm. When you put them in a rocks glass they class the hell out of it. They make that cool tinkly musical sound when the glass tilts pre or post sip. I immediately wanted to be wearing a black 1950's tux with the bow tie undone and the collar open while Dean Martin and I decided which club to hit in Manhattan after we finished our drinks here. Proof enough? Yeah, you better look away. Tell me to prove it. Prove this. OK, before this escalates, let's just agree I'm right. Jason, the mixologist, was that perfect combination of friendly and laid back. Friendly enough to give the history of the place and bring us cool old bartenders books to peruse while we sipped, and laid back enough to give us space when we got involved in the drinking and eating and talking portion, while always ready to fill up a water glass or suggest another really, seriously good drink. And really good drinks are their specialty. They have an enormous selection of mixers and tinctures and although I heard several people ask for unusual drinks while I was there, not only were they never stumped, they usually asked which version the customer wanted. Mistress Linda and Kimberly both like grapefruit so they had several different drinks utilizing both fresh grapefruit and some arcane grapefruit bitters and they were all simply By Golly Great! The food balances the cocktails perfectly. We adored the charcuterie and cheese plates and I will have them again. Plus they give lots of toasted bread with each platter, rather than the skimpy one or two pieces at some other places. The prices are on a par with the service and fare. The ambience is modern and upscale, but very inviting and comfortable. I love bars so we sat there, and the bar stools are more than comfortable enough to park it for a serious night of sipping, but there were tables along a long back wall if you prefer them. It's not a large place, but it seems larger than it is. It ain't cheap, but when you're in the mood to dress up and hit the town in style, you can't go wrong here. I could see where there could be a snooty factor here but it wasn't in evidence when we visited. It occupies an odd time warp between Second Bar and Kitchen, and the restaurant Congress. Both of these have their own bars, so Bar Congress is not part of either, but since it has no street entrance of its own you have to go through one or the other to get to it, like it's a secret. This makes me like it more. And I liked it a lot already. And I love those ice cubes.

There are so many things I loved about this place: 1. In other hotels/restaurants, this would just be the lobby bar or the hallway bar between the nice restaurant and the trendy more casual restaurant. Instead, Bar Congress is entirely its own place. The menu is a bit of a combination of the other two restaurants. 2. The cocktails were incredible. I had the scarlet lantern and the old fashioned rumble. Both were fantastic. I like how they have a list of different Collins made with different base alcohols and matched ingredients. 3. Food was very good. I had: heirloom tomato salad (I would have preferred more tomato and less peach) shisito peppers (so good...great mix of sweet and spicy) pappardelle with veal meatballs (the dish was great, the meatballs were overcooked) 4. Other people at the bar talked it up as their favorite restaurant 5. Scott Walker was behind the bar and was super friendly and helpful I'll definitely go back.

Such a fun bar! The bartenders are very knowledgeable and can make you any kind of drink you like. The drink presentations are very fun too. The heckle and heckle is complete with a fire display! It's hidden between second+bar kitchen and congress.

I would give this place 5 stars because the drinks are so incredible, however, the atmosphere is so non-Austin and non-laid back that it isn't my scene. It was insanely loud making it hard to hear the bartender talk and I really didn't like the crowd, but that's just me personally. First, it's TINY! Don't expect a nice-sized bar you can chill at. I think maybe 10 people can sit at the bar and there were about 5 tiny tables in the space. We got lucky and were able to sit at the bar. The reason I value this is that when going to a place where mixology is a focus, talking to the bartender can gain you an extensive education in drinks. My husband is currently obsessed with mixology and loves chatting about drinks with bartenders. Adam is an incredible bartender. Every drink he made was a masterpiece. I started the night with a Preferred Lies. The flavor of the earl grey infused bourbon was terrific and the sweet foam on top really balanced well with the drink. My husband, however, got the best drinks of the night. The first was the Mestizo. All I can say is spicy deliciousness! The second drink he got shocked me. It's the Martinez and it's a gin-based drink. I am not a fan of gin. However, this drink was so delicate and perfectly balanced. Truly a great drink. And one I hope my husband can easily replicate as all he's talked about since this trip is Ransom Old Tom gin and how great it is. Worth a visit to have some amazing drinks made by one of the best bartenders in Austin.

This place lives up to the hype and then some. the boyfriend and I dined at Annies cafe (review to come soon) after a long, torturous day during labor day weekend. While there, we recieved a phone call from visiting friends who invited us to bar congress. I'd been to second kitchen (also coming soon) so, I expected it to be nothing short of miraculous. Miraculous is an understatement. The cons: needs more space, it was eight of us and we had to wait a bit before we could snag a table. The boyfriend and I had to stand up for a while. The waitress was invisible most of the time and I don't recall if she ever spoke more than a sentence to us. The pros: we mentioned Annies truffled fries and I stated it was one of the better fries in town. All of a sudden the mysterious tattooed, bearded bartender brought us complementary truffle fries. Probably the best truffle fries in town. I'm an expert, promise. I told him to surprise me with something prohibition era and I was brought a Moscow mule. Comes In a copper tin cup and is garnished with radish. I think. Bartenders actually converse and are pretty funny guys. The cons take that last star. I can go to haddingtons and at least be able to sit.

My favorite bar. Ever. Yes, it's inside a swanky highrise, and possessing a bit of an upscale hotel bar feel, but once you've tasted their drinks, you will forget that other bars exist. Every drink I've ever had here has been a quasi-religious experience. I admit I'm a bit of a cocktail snob, and can no longer stomach the "fountain soda" drinks you get in many bars, the way I did in my 20s. I like watching a mixologist carefully mix fine ingredients and presenting me with a tasty little piece of art. And there are few bars in Austin that can match Bar Congress in quality. I love that, if you're feeling adventurous, you can tell the mixologists what you're in the mood for, and they will experiment on you. Depending on how adventurous you feel, they will help you break out of your comfort zone. I have always hated gin, but with a little education from the guys behind the bar, I've had more than one gin-based cocktail that' I've enjoyed. (Once I outpaced myself and ordered a Gin and Jam, which is a glass of gin with a spoon of jam in it, and that was undoubtedly a mistake, but I over-reached on that call and learned my lesson.) Also, while pricey for Austin, it's not overly expensive. Expect to pay $9-14 dollars for a cocktail here, and know that it will be well worth it.

Excellent, though small and tight bar space. Didn't try the plates, this is just a drink review. Lots of thought and care put into specialty cocktails. Everything was perfect, from the sazerac and vieux carre to the Moscow mule and gin martini. One of my new favorite bars downtown.

I've been to England; I've been to France. I've been to Munich in my underpants. And the drinks at Bar Congress rank among the best I've ever had. The wares: as mentioned previously, this small bar's selection packs a mighty punch. Their offerings are unique, they're thoughtful, they're rare and delicious and alcoholic and they gleam on their shelves. Great food necessitates great ingredients. Great cocktails call for great spirits. They're here, waiting to be mixed. And mixed they are. The staff here take great deliberations in their craft, and they coax the spirits into coherent, adventurous, and lively drinks. They're drinks; they'll get you drunk. Yes, they have panache, but they'll punch you in the gut with scotch, or slap you in the face with a sophisticated gin, or just rumble with you via a well-placed whiskey. As with good food, the bartenders don't mask/harass/defile the spirits with misplaced additives--everything that comes with the booze is complementary. And they taste good, damn good. Jason is the man. His skill, coupled with his excellent bedside manner, puts this place over the top for me. Never have his recommendations failed me. I tell him that I want gin, and he gives me a heavenly feast. I tell him I want something boozy, and he gets to smashing my inhibitions with a strong creation. Let him play; let him run free with your suggestions. That's what makes this place as good as it gets--he interacts with you. He considers your wishes, and exceeds them. He builds a rapport with you. He has all the skill that I found at a number of highly-rated bar programs, but does all of them one better: he makes those drinks for you, and not just for himself. He defines great service. Of course, the food is dynamite. The Bar Burger typifies a four-star sandwich: good moisture, excellent beefiness, a delicious cohesion of bread/meat/fixings. As the bar draws from The Second Bar + Kitchen and Congress, you'll have your choice of great food offerings here. Do yourself a favor--go here. Grab a seat, and start a conversation with Jason or one of his associates. Develop something great to drink. And be prepared to get something altogether greater than you expected. You're welcome.

Came here for drinks before dinner at Congress and we were lucky to snap up the last available table. The place is REALLY small. Had a couple artisan cocktails and the charcuterie block. The meats were fantastic - particularly the pate. Service was just fine - this is a great place to come for an upscale cocktail and snack!

Came in as a group of 4 on a Friday night to enjoy a few drinks before dinner reservations next door at Congress. While the bar itself was nice enough and the drinks didn't disappoint, the behavior of the staff was inexcusable and so discomfiting that we left after one drink, and transferred our tab to Congress, which was amazing and sat us an hour before our reservation. The reason for our universal disappointment was that while seated at the bar, we overheard (at one point or another every staff member present) talking amongst themselves about the various patrons in the bar. Loud discussions critiquing what/how they ordered, and even discussing how one couple ate their ice cream. As patrons ourselves, it obviously puts into mind that if they have no hesitation loudly criticizing every other person there, that we were next. While I suppose it could be written off as inexperienced staff having a rough night, when you hear it from even the managers present, it makes you think it's intrinsic, and definitely soured our experienced. While we are already planning our next meal at the restaurant next door, we (and everyone we know) will be doing the staff at Bar Congress an apparent favor by keeping far away.

I've been saying for years the art of bartending is dying. Not here it isn't! If you like classic and creative cocktails this is the place. Jason has done an excellent job with this cocktail menu and finally a place that can make a decent bijou. The price might be a little steep for some but it is definitely worth a stop in one or ten times. And I'll be honest I haven't tried to food but the menu looks awesome!

We're talking about the bar here. Not the bistro at Congress, not the restaurant. The bar is one of those pretentious, self-absorbed mixology parlors where the bartender (oops--mixologist) sports a tightly waxed mustache and a jaunty cap. Indoors. Lots of ceremony and invented tradition. Plenty of botanicals, herbs, spices, syrups, bitters, beakers, flasks, colloids, emulsions, mystical chants, and secret ceremonies. The staff is, as it should be, remote, aloof, and a bit imperious. They do not want to hear how you think you would like your drink to be made--that would be like telling the chef how to stir your risotto. They just want a quiet five or ten minutes, alone, to make your drink with precision and panache. Problem is, I just wanted a plain, old-style, country-club, your father's martini with an olive. On the rocks, if you can believe that. This sums it up: Which of these gins were not stocked by Bar Congress: Bombay Sapphire, Boodles, Tanqueray, Gordon's, Gilbeys, Plymouth, and Beefeater. Answer: Bar Congress does not stock any of them. Perhaps you would enjoy Aviation, from Portland, Oregon, described thusly: Saspirilla, lavender and anise wrap around cardamom and orange peel, with coriander lingering around the edges, in addition to an unmistakable spiciness and earthiness that the rye base brings to the mix. Oh, puh-leeeez. Is there a bar nearby?

Such a terrific, and refined drinking establishment. Not a bar, not a bartender: Prime-time here, folks. Craft Bar-tending, Mixologist, Bar Chef, Liquid Alchemy ... Choose your term, this is not for the faint of heart. Having said that, Adam makes his craft understandable and accessible. He took my companion, a confirmed wine drinker, into various forays into the world of Compari and similar liquors ... she did not convert, but now has a respect for the liquid! Great, intimate space.

There's no doubt a reason the fine folks at Esquire dubbed this one of the currently interesting great bars in America - I mean, it's hidden, quite literally, behind a Veil of Secrecy. They're big on fancy, frothy cocktails here, boast an excellent wine list, and topped my glass with a more than acceptable litany of brews available. I did find it especially interesting that they keep the featured bottles they're pouring from on display and under soft light: order these by the glass and they'll siphon out your pour, not unlike some of the machined pour places (RIP Taste) used to do back in the day, but with a little more personal touch. Soup to nuts the place would likely feel packed with twenty people inside, but who knows, maybe they'd be twenty with interesting stories to tell. And a tall glass of red besides.

I love this place. Yes, it's pretty small, but it's also not somewhere to spend the better portion of your evening. I'm a fan of grabbing a quick cocktail, maybe a small bite or two, and then moving on with my night. My favorite thing about this place is the infamous (and handsome) Adam Bryan. He makes a mean cocktail. I was craving something with fernet, but not something sweet. I ordered from our cocktail server who promptly brought me something custom made by Adam. It was a swizzle unlike anything I've had before. He even walked over from behind the bar to explain what was in it. Uh.. Wow! Awesome! Just for that I'll go back. Again. And again. I'm curious to see what other genius cocktails he concotes on the spot. He has never served me anything that I didn't love and that's saying a lot because I'm not usually a cocktail drinker. Adam = 5 stars The cocktails = 5 stars The crowded atmosphere and iffy service = 3 stars

Atmosphere, vibe, fancy cocktails... All of that is great, but the bartenders here really know their liquor. And by that I mean more than that they know not to put a stirring straw in Scotch poured neat. Also, and this should always bear mentioning, NO TV.

I had a lovely walk around the downtown area, and marveled at what it's becoming. It's looking more and more hip, chic, and...like an interesting place to spend an evening. I stopped in here on my break while working at the TEDx Talk Austin event, and was happy to find tattooed, funky people behind this sleek-looking bar. The drinks I had were well crafted, but not quite as good as my Haddington's experience earlier that evening. I wanted a little something else to gnosh on, so I asked the batender's opinion. Fried olives or Pomme Frites? We decided that I should get both. Since they were only $5-6 each. Not bad. Did I say not bad? I meant quite tasty! Chicken Fried Olives stuffed with Blue cheese? Yes please! I didn't get a huge amount, but I don't think I could've eaten a huge amount. The Pomme Frites with Truffle Aioli and Pecorino? Very well done. Not the best I've ever had, but pretty darn tasty and worth the caloric intake. I don't know if I'm cool enough to frequent this place, but I'll likely stop in again when I feel like dressing up and splurging a little.

Bar Congress... How I love your cocktails. Started with their house menu, filled with complex flavor profiles you want one of everything to start. I started with the Anise Anise (Herbsaint, Peychaud's, Lemon, Ginger beer). Then tasted the Mestizo (sotol, sour orange and lime, homemade grenadine and arbol chile). Then few sips of Forty Nights (rum, brown ale, fresh cream, nutmeg). Each was perfectly balanced, flavorful and worth savoring every sip. The Preferred Lies took the cake, though: Earl Grey infused bourbon, apple drinking vinegar and canton ginger foam... Beyond describable. Adam Bryan makes the best cocktails I've had in Austin. Atmosphere: great blues playing, big booths and a long bar. Comfy seating and dimly lit, just like I like it. The service was perfect. Our waitress Caitlin was knowledgable, fun and knew just when to check on us, making spot on recommendations and answering all questions with humor. The kitchen wasn't officially open so they were not offering a food menu when we went. But in true top notch service style, the staff snuck small plates to us to sample the forthcoming offerings. Just as with the cocktails, we were not disappointed. Spicy fried pickles with gorgonzola dipping sauce and chicken fried pimento cheese stuffed olives were the highlights. Just as they were about to clear the plates, a friend (who shall remain nameless) snatched the cup of gorgonzola sauce and finished it off like a shot. Yep, it was that good. If our snacks and the menu from next door (Second Restaurant) is any indication, the food will be fantastic. The menu for the invite-only soft launch of Second offered everything from avocado fundido to pappardelle to braised and pressed pork shoulder. Yum. I predict this place will be packed packed and packed in no time at all. And I'll be elbowing my way to the bar to the bitter end.

Great drinks, perhaps a bit on the theatrical side ( I mean c'mon do u really have to light my rosemary on fire and wave it around??) but the best in Austin by far

Yes, we entered this place with a splash. Well, one of us or the waiter, spilled waiter on the table. No worries, we didn't get wet, we just wet our whistle with a cocktail The atmosphere is hip and chic here. The waiter, Christopher, was so nice and had a good sense of humor. Hubby had the best pork chop. It wasn't huge either but it was just right. I had 3 small plates. One was a cheese board featuring the finest cheeses from Antonellis Cheese Shop in Austin. It was served on a wooden board with apricot preserves and olives and bread. Then, I had creamy polenta with goat cheese and sauteed mushrooms. Served in a little iron custard dish. YUMMY and not filling. Very nicely done. And it was small, but just right. I also had a salad with beets, arugula and purple onion. We indulged in a dessert. Apple Fritters w/ thyme and served with Goat Cheese Ice Cream. Well, we changed it up, and instead of goat cheese, we had CORN BREAD ICE CREAM. Yes, it was soooooooo good. And the fritters weren't greasy. But again, not filling or too sweet. Just right. All was reasonably priced too. At one point during our meal, I could hear Johnny Cash playing on their sound system. How fitting for Texas. BUT, funny thing is, when I went to the ladies room, the children's opera Peter and the Wolf was playing. With story and all. So funny! Anyhoo, we really enjoyed this place. We would be back anytime. Heck if I was rich, I would fly here for dinner!!

I am a wine guy but I enjoy a good cocktail. To me, there is nothing better than a Manhattan. The version at Bar Congress is the best cocktail I've ever had...it's called a Hyde Park. Bravo Bar Congress! Bravo! The location is nice. The decor is sterile. The lighting is too bright. The crowd is homogeneous. The bar staff is great.

Jason, formally from East Side Show Room, has taken over the bar. He is wonderful, not only can make any drink you want but tell you the history of it too if you're interested. Can a bartender have groupies? I'll be the first to sign up.

Trendy, modern ambiance, loud and full of beautiful people. If you like that, you'll love this place. I went only for cocktails and they were well crafted, but nothing out of the ordinary. The staff was anything but friendly, but I guess they don't have to be given how crowded it was. If I had some friends from out of town (San Francisco, LA or NY types) that I wanted to "impress", I might go back. But I think there are many other places that are equally nice and make mean cocktails.

At first...my review to everyone was "It's more expensive, than it is good!" but now, it's seems they have improved a bit. The tuna sandwich and the BBQ sliders...are REALLY good. Every once in a blue moon, a snubby waiter ruins the experience (seriously people you DO NOT have to be rude to convince people your restaurant is high-falootin" (lol) just good food, good service, and just a general good experience. The last waitress we had a few weeks ago was awesome..she was honest and told us EXACTLY what to get and not to get..and she was SPOT-ON...loved it this time. She even suggested a great whiskey drink for my colleague, though I did not try it, he said it was the "disco-bomb".......

In light of the fact that two of my four companions managed to knock over their first drinks (yes, we're a talented bunch!) within minutes of arriving and our fantastic waitress maintained her smile and positive attitude, I can't help but give Bar Congress 5 stars. They serve a delicious prosecco. The cheese plate is divine. Oh, and did anyone mention the gnocchi "tator tots" yet? Amazeballs.

This suite of restaurants and bar area can be hit or miss with service, but the drinks and atmosphere are some of the best in town, Last night was a great visit, good service, perfect drinks and good company at the bar. David Bull has created an Austin gem, just need his demeanor to be a little more infectious with all of the staff and this spot will be perfect.

Bar Congress benefits from a clean and inventive setting, sophisticated selection, a supremely talented (not to mention mustachioed) mixologist. This is a grown up kind of place with no airs or pretensions. The menu is loaded with drinks that either are or seem to be classic. If you don't know what you want, you can always describe it to them. I, for example, had wanted to try the Last Word. I forgot the name but was able to describe the clean gin, fruity elements I had heard of. I got a Last Word. Mature and slick without being stuffy or smarmy; that's the best way to describe them.

I kinda wanted to stay and drink all night, but I'd already had a couple next door. Alas. I had the Pear Shaped, which was fantastic, and Chris had the Preferred Lies, which was just as yummy. Next time, I'll try the Moscow Mule (one of my favorite drinks) since I saw that they served them in copper cups (correct, but rare).

Awesomeness in a cocktail glass. Places like Bar Congress make me think that Austin has finally arrived in the big leagues. The cocktail list is varied and inventive, the atmosphere is clubby and cozy, and the service is excellent. Perfect place for a pre-dinner drink or nightcap after a delicious meal at Second Bar + Kitchen or Congress!

Ooh, ooh. My memory was spotty. I had a tiny visit with a full-sized Adam this past Saturday, late-ish, and was happy to end up with a full-sized Rowe's Anthem for a long overdue round deux at Bar Congress. The smoky, wonderful finish is owed to a delicately charred orange peel garnish, not a match (silly memory)! Still a complex and delicious cocktail. Fave.

I wasn't very impressed. The service was VERY slow. The waitress was not interested in talking to us. And the expensive drinks took forever when we finally did get her to take our order. They did taste good but not worth the time or money.
