Food was tasty and good. Ambience not too bad. Four rating because the service is ok and very slow. Would visit again for the food if in town again.

The food was pretty good. I can' recall what my boyfriend ordered, but he loved it! I had a combo plate with a tamale, enchilada and something else. They were all beef and weren't bad, as I preferred the shredded beef over the ground beef. The service on the other hand was pretty slow... It appeared that there were only two waitresses working, both of whom had to also serve as hostess and cashier.

The staff was great we walked in as they were closing but they still took us in. The food was so good and big servings too. So if ur craving Mexican food this place will not let you down.

Just "ok". Stopped to eat here between our visits to Cade's Cove and Tuckaleechee Caverns. The service was bafflingly slow given we were one of only 3 tables occupied in the entire restaurant. The salsa was good and the food was average. Not terrible, but nothing remarkable either. They also don't serve any kind of alcohol so a vacation margarita is out of the question! Probably would not go back. Try something else....

Surprisingly tasty! The rice was good as well as the main meal and flan dessert had the most syrup sauce I've seen in restaurants. I had my doubts but my family and really enjoyed this meal. Although the hot sauce was not hot enough for me but they accommodated my habanero sauce request. I will definitely go back. P.S. If I recall correctly, this establishment is in a dry county when it comes to serving hard alcohol. Not sure why, but historically so. This is my response to a passer by recent reviewer.

Overall OK experience. The food was pretty good and the salsa actually tasted like real salsa. It was pretty dead when we went in and while we were seated quickly towards the end we had to flag additional staff down to get more chips and then our check because our waitress was busy texting on her phone and not coming over (we could see her doing this from our table as she was sitting at another booth doing this which I found a bit off putting).

I am giving this place five stars because it is the best place in town and the only place in town that won't just re-heat things from a can and serve them in a cheap bowl for your enjoyment. That being said, the food here is good. The food here is also original enough that you know it doesn't come from a box and it wasn't made by a teenager with three days of chef training. They also have big and cold pours of beer and the service is fast. If you have to eat in Townsend, this is your best bet.

In the mood for mexican? This restaurant should be on your list. We have here three times and pleased every time. Service is prompt food is good and prices good. Atmosphere is plain, so this is not a special occasion restaurant, but a sure thing if you crave mexican while in Townsend.

This a solid "american" Mexican restaurant. The food we had was good, but not unusually so. My wife had steak fajitas and unfortunately the nicely cut thin strips of steak were nearly incinerated. All of the standard accompaniments for her fajitas were good. Having enjoyed the wonderful flour tortillas found on the Baja and northern states of Mexico, I am always disappointed to be served the commercial excuses for tortillas found in the US: bland, thick, and tasteless. I had the Maya Dinner, marked as a new offering on the menu. Although it was described as having beef and chorizo, the version I got has made with shrimp. It was very good, but not as described on the menu. As with most Mexican restaurants in the US, Monte Real offers 5 pages of menu items...too many for any chef to do really well. Better they should cut back to a nice variety of the things that they do really well. The portions were sized to satisfy large appetites, so no one should worry about going away hungry. As well as all the usual beer suspects we were pleased to see our favorite Mexican new on the menu, Victoria. I debated giving 4 stars, but ultimately the burned meat, and entree very different from the menu description seemed to call for some sort of deduction. Still we'd return if we are ever in town again.

Excellent food and service! We ordered the pork carnitas tacos and tamales. Both were delicious. The dark salsa that came with the tacos was spicy and tasty. The staff was very friendly and we got our food quickly. Plenty of food (portion sizes were on the large size) and good prices.

My husband and I have eaten here twice and we just don't like it. Last time I got a burrito and the chicken was cooked so much it was tough and inedible. I also didn't like the tomatoes and mushrooms. I prefer a place that serves more traditional fare like arroz con pollo or bean and rice burritos.

Like several other reviews, this is good "American" Mexican food. Service was OK. Food was decent and had good kids menu. All-in-all, a good option after a long day in Cades Cove.

Has a rather broad menu, with choices available for vegetarian, carnivore, and gluten-free. Some entries are at least semi authentic Mexican and some are straight out American (like a "salad" with a bed of French fries). Serving sizes are generous and prices are reasonable. Service was a bit slow when we went (mid afternoon, off-season). I liked my black bean salad. My daughter's quesadilla was kind of bland and a bit short on the cheese. We will probably go back, but there is some room for improvement.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
