I'm a local and this is one of my favorite places in Townsend (the other being black bear cafe). We eat here about once a week and love the fried chicken. Sometimes certain items are hit and miss but most of the time it's all good country cooking. We like the laid back atmosphere and they always remember us. I'm pretty critical of most of the restaurants here, but this is a diamond in the rough.

We lucked out into this place. Went up to the Smokies for the weekend and drove by Carriage House. This isn't Chili's or Applebee's, which I mean as a compliment. Carriage House opened for business in 1971 -- and looks it (a good thing). This is old-fashioned restaurant dining featuring things you won't find at your typical themed restaurant of today, such excellent food and service. And value. They had their "famous" Sunday buffet going on for all-you-can-eat food, salad, dessert and drink for $11.95! Sold! All the veggies were fresh and not out of a can. Fried chicken was great. Everything on the bar was great. And the place was so busy, the food was refreshed continuously, resulting in hot, fresh food. What a treat to have a dining experience such as this. Shame on those below who did not give this place five stars. Are you upset they didn't have a spinach artichoke dip?

This was the best horrifying meal I've ever had! We arrived on a random Friday in mid October around 2:30 in the afternoon. We walked in not expecting the Bates Motel feel, but willing to give it a try. We were seated promptly and given time to peruse the menu. My husband chose the Reuben with fries and I had the crispy chicken salad with ranch. I greatly enjoyed watching my salad being built out of the salad bar off of the Buffett, it was VERY big. My husbands Reuben came out, sans fries, ad was made of ham. While neither of us had experienced a Reuben made with ham, and could have sworn the menu called for corned beef. The food was eaten an sweet tea drunk. All in all the food was subpar, but we appreciate having a good vacation story to share!

The Sunday Buffet has not changed in the over 30 years we have been eating here regularly and is always the best. Home Southern style cooking, great salad bar, hot vegetables, and a selection of meats. The deserts are varied and wonderful. I don't eat the meats, but my family does and seems to enjoy them. The good thing about so much variety is there is always something for everyone! The restaurant is attractive on the outside, spotless on the inside, and is warm and welcoming. The staff are pleasant and helpful and I appreciate that my diet coke glass is never empty. Parking is at the door, but can be crowded on Sundays and at other peak times when a wait for seating will also be likely. But never fear they keep the food coming from the kitchen so it's always fresh. They have other menu items, but we always do the buffet which is reasonably priced and a bargain. Looking at some of the other reviews posted about the Carriage House I have to wonder what these people are looking for and what standards they are used to. This is authentic down home cooking not some standardized commercial representation with fake decor.

Solid home comfort food. We had grilled cheese, fries, and fried pickles. Pretty good food. What you would expect from a place like this. The salad bar was decent too. Wonderful service. As vegetarians, we found the salad bar nice for this mostly fried food place. Non-ADA bathroom.

I have been vacationing on and off in Townsend for 18 years. We always end our vacation with the morning breakfast buffet at the Carriage House. Before our visit today, I would have rated them 5 stars, but things have changed. There was no buffet this morning. There was a sign out front that said they no longer serve bacon on the buffet because it is too expensive.(I guess if and when they still have the buffet). We decided to stay and eat off the menu. I had the farmer's omelet which was good. The biscuits that came with it were dry and overcooked I might have been able to make them edible if there was any butter, but none came and the server never returned after the food was set down. I suspect the biscuits were from yesterday. My wife ordered eggs, home fries toast and bacon. The bacon(which they deem too expensive) was inedible, clearly from the discount rack. The home fries appear to be yesterday's baked potatoes chopped into squares and then browned. Since they tasted bland, they were left untouched. They did give a big bowl of them, I guess they wanted to clear out yesterday's potatoes. Her toast was delivered dry. No butter supplied and no one around to ask for it. We had to stop on the way home and get my wife something to eat at a truck stop. one of the grandsons had French toast which he ate and said was good. The other ordered pancakes, he ate half of one and pushed them away with a thumbs down gesture. So basically we left 40 dollars poorer and two of the four of us were still hungry. We will not eat here again unless we hear that the management has changed. The buffet used to be good and didn't require much service, so the service seemed good. After the food was dropped off, we had to flag down our waitress to get the bill. The place was not busy, and I suspect it seldom is.

I stopped at this restaurant on my way to Cades Cove Smoky Mountains a few months ago I wasn't impressed at all and left wishing I had stopped at Cracker Barrel instead. The staff was friendly and courteous and the building was warm and cozy. But the food, which is why I stopped in the first place was not good at all. Hopefully they've improved because they had a good thing going, they just needed a cook

In all of the restaurants in all of the world, this is THE best restaurant I've ever been to. The customer service should be a role model to all others, it almost feels like a member of your family asking you if you need something else or would like another drink or dessert. The food is made with love and I swear there's a team of Grannies in the back pouring decades of cooking secrets into every bite you inhale. This place has the best burgers I've tasted and their breakfasts are stuff of legends, I can't stress enough how everything on the menu is 5 star quality. I've eaten here twice in a day for several days straight before and each time my meal and service were 5 star. You would never expect to find this little gem of culinary delight in such a small town and seemingly just off the beaten path to one of the best national parks in the country. But boom, right there it is, in a great location with some of the most breathtaking scenery you'll ever find out a restaurant's dining room window. This place is truly magnificent, the pancakes and burgers and everything in between are top class. That with the service and scenery cannot be matched. The prices are average for the area and if you know about this area, then I'm telling you, why go to Pigeon Forge or Gatlinburg and brave the traffic when pure bliss is right here on the quiet side of the Smokies? There's really no need and you'll never forget your experience. I have no idea why more people don't comment about this wonderful restaurant, and I've been here dozens of times and I even live in Texas now. When I visit the area this is the place that always keeps me coming back.

Typical small town place with very basic homestyle food. They had a buffet set up while we were there. We had cheeseburgers which were hand formed and juicy, they give you lots of lettuce/tomato/red onion which I really like on my burger. Other than that pretty basic stuff and not really my cup of tea. We just didn't know where else to go in Townsend. Once we found Miss Lilys Cafe we never went anywhere else.

Decent country buffet. We have eaten breakfast, lunch and dinner here over the years. If you stay at the Talley Ho Inn you also get 10% off. We eat there pretty exclusively when in town. Other restaurants just don't match on quality and variety.

We were blown away by the great home cooking. Favorites on the buffet were the chicken pot pie, green beans, fried chicken and red velvet cake to boot! Will come here again next time we're passing through.

We dine here often when in Townsend. I think sometimes people see a buffet and forget this place also has a menu !! The service is always friendly and prompt, the servers have been here for years ! Menu items I can recommend are the fried grouper......awesome, generous portions.....ask for a take out box. The sliders are wonderful, they actually make their burgers with really good beef. The sweet tea is great, and refilled regularly, servers will offer some for the road as well. As for the country buffet, the salad bar is very good with lots of selection although the iceberg lettuce can be a bit brown on the edges at times. The vegetables are pretty much what a tourist would think was southern home cooking, actually it's more out of a can. BUT......the fried chicken is VERY good.....And with the buffet, the brownies they make routinely are great. I recommend you try it.....we enjoy the breakfast here as well.

Very homey and "country". Husband got a burger and I got a grilled cheese and veggie soup. Both were decent... nothing to write home about, but affordable (10% discount if you're staying at the Talley Ho Inn) and decent. Many of the items looked very heavy. The service was very quick and friendly.
