The sushi and Thai food is consistently good. I really like their Pad Thai (disclaimer: it's pretty sweet, which is inauthentic, but this is America and that's how I like it.) For an appetizer, get the edamame with garlic sauce. The fresh grated garlic in the sauce really elevates the fresh edamame.

Very poor service. I waited 35 minutes for my appetizer and when I approached a waiter (who had not once checked up on me) and asked what the status of my food was, he said sarcastically, "We're busy tonight buddy" and resumed what he was doing. I walked out and do not plan on returning.

This was decent sushi. Some of the fish was a bit chewy for my liking. It's a confusing atmosphere. The host sits you down with a menu, pencil, order sheet, and a tablet. Doesn't tell you what to do with any of it. I eventually figured out the order sheet was for a non descriptive sushi order. Which you have to try to match up with pictures from the tablet. A decent idea, but a 2 second explanation would be helpful. The sushi was presented beautifully. Some of the fish was on the border of freshness. Still fresh, yet not perfect. would I return? Yes. Would I order the chefs choice? Probably not.

I chose to go to Koi because I was craving their delicious Pad Thai! I was sat pretty quickly but wasn't offered a drink until about 15 minutes later . I looked around for a server hoping I would catch someone's eye . They weren't very busy at the moment . My guest joined me a few minutes later . Our server finally came to our table . We asked about an assortment of different soups but she wasn't helpful . We ordered the chicken& shrimp pad Thai dish to share & the Super fly roll . The Pad Thai is always amazing but the super fly roll let me down . : ( the sushi roll was missing an ingredient. Overall, I gave our experience 3 stars . I hope the service is a lot better next time . I rave about this place but my guest was very let down by her soup & the wait for drinks .

Remember that time you first looked at the massive Princeton Review book of colleges and thought, "There is no way I am ever going to read all this"? That is how I feel whenever I see the Koi sushi menu. Don't get me wrong--I love variety. I especially love variety when it is delicious. However, handed the giant tome that contains the many sushi options (and their pictures), I often find myself giving up after the first five pages. Or worse, I make it all the way to the end, and realize that I have forgotten which item I chose somewhere in the first three pages. Luckily, the search is always worth it, because Koi has some of the best sushi in Nashville. The salmon is fresh, the tempura is light and crispy, and the fruit is ripe. Whatever I end up ordering out of the epic book o' sushi, I am always satisfied by the portion sizes and the taste. Now, part of my satisfaction may stem from the hunger I experience after waiting in the seemingly endless food desert that is the restaurant's dining room. A typical meal here takes about an hour and a half; if you are truly rushing, plan on an hour. Of course, that may not be that bad if you are trying to extend your date. With reasonable prices and great sushi, this is definitely a solid choice for sushi, as long as you are willing to wait for the experience.

Definitely an interesting place. They had thai tea which makes me very happy since I have a sweet tooth. And they had so many sushi choices! They even had all of their sushi choices on an iPad with pictures to give you an idea of what it is. Their sushi is very large and filling. And they had some thai and vietnamese food. There were so many choices and things I wanted to try and overall, I enjoyed the food. The sushi wasn't the best I've ever had but it was still pretty good. The atmosphere was relaxing. I liked the booths but was also interested in sitting on the opposite side of the restaurant where you sit on mats at the table. I would definitely come back and try other things. At the moment, I can't imagine myself having cravings for this place but I would try it again.

I ordered red curry with tofu, spice level 3, for lunch today and have to say I was quite impressed with how good the curry was. A little thicker and full of flavor, just like I like it! It wasn't quite as spicy as I had hoped for, but it still had some heat to it. I will definitely eat here for lunch more often.

Whenever people ask me for a sushi recommendation, KOI is my go-to and so far everyone always loves it. In fact, people I introduce to here usually end up inviting me to join them there again soon! Unfortunately, as much as I have always loved this place, I've grown frustrated with the increasingly slow service. Thirty minutes before our waitress even checks to take our order? Another hour before we get our food? There were only 7 of us. With sushi there is a balance of quality versus cost. KOI strikes just the right balance of delicious sushi at an acceptable price point. I've never ordered anything from the menu I didn't thoroughly enjoy and everyone I've ever brought here has been an instant fan too. They have a larger than necessary menu which can be a little overwhelming and you should expect your food to take longer than usual to arrive even if it's not busy. The less than attentive service and wait times for food are the only reason it's not five stars. This is the best sushi you will find in Nashville without skipping a payment on your student loans, but plan for it to take a while.

Second time in as many months that we have attempted to eat here without success. The first occasion we sat at the sushi bar for 20minutes with no acknowledgement from any staff, we asked them and they said its be a few more moments. There were very few people in the restaurant. On this evening we were immediately seated, it was slightly more busy but still plenty of seats. We saw our server once, ordered food and waited. My dinner date after 25minutes asked about the soup he ordered. It took another 5 to get the soup. After 40minutes we inquiries about our ordered sushi, we had to go to the sushi bar to have an answer we found out their were many more orders in front of our, about seven tables and there was no timeline given. We asked to pay for the soup so we could leave, had to go to the bar to get the bill yet again. Not pleased with multiple service blunders, lots of wait staff clearing tables and not checking or communicating with the current tables. Definitely frustrating, especially since this poor service has happened twice. It's a bummer, the first service was fine... But I won't go back a fourth time after my experience the last two attempts =\

Large variety of Maki! We were in the mood for sushi while in the area so we stopped in for lunch. The atmosphere was inviting and comfortable with Japanese seating on one side of the restaurant and tables and booths on the other side. By Japanese seating I mean there were long tables with cushioned benches on each side. It wasn't very busy but the service was a bit slow but I suppose that was because one of the waiters was eating and the other was rolling silverware in napkins. Our server handed us an iPad with pictures and descriptions of their many Maki rolls. It was overwhelming and hard to decide. I suggest looking up the menu online to make the best choice. We started with the Chicken Tempura and it was fantastic. I love good tempura. We then ordered the dragon roll, the red devil roll, and the rainbow roll. The rainbow roll was my favorite. It had crab and cucumber with a different type of fish on each piece. We also had two pieces yellowfin tuna sushi. We will have to make a return visit to experience more rolls.

Service has always been bad, but the food normally would make up for it. Not tonight. The service on this night was so bad -- I will never return. Short pours on wine, water glasses not refilled, and all the food came out at different times -- and our sushi rolls never made it out. We brought it up with the staff, but the rest of our table had almost finished. All said, staff never checked on us and didn't even offer to recoup part of the check even though they obviously screwed up. Will never return -- there are plenty of better restaurants in Nashville vying for my money -- see no reason to give it to a place that doesn't even try to get it right.

Great food. Horrid service. I don't know why, but they seem to perpetually understaff the place. If you are lucky someone will approach your table within 15 minutes, but I've seen it be a lot longer. Once you have your food don't expect to ever see a waiter again. We were there tonight and there was a hefty wait for tables yet we sat with our plates empty waiting for the check for over ten minutes. I usually end up going up to the counter to ask for the check, but I had already watched six other people have to physically get up and go find a waiter and none of them ended up with service, so I didn't bother. I have continued to go saying "meh, the service sucks but the prices and sushi are good." I tend to give people the benefit of the doubt about oh, maybe they had a waiter call out sick or something, but it has gotten to the point that I don't think I will return because at this point it isn't a fluke or a learning curve, it is just really poor management and not worth it anymore.

We ordered soup and sushi. Picked up the first sushi roll, and there was a black hair underneath. It happens, so we inform the waitress and ask her to get us some new rolls. She is very apologetic, and returns with the new rolls. Here's the problem: I covered some of the rolls in table salt in order to determine if they just re-plated the old sushi. Lo and behold, the "new" sushi returns covered in salt. I ask the waitress if they made new sushi, or just re-plated the old sushi. She says its new sushi. I inform her that I covered the old sushi in salt, and this new sushi just happens to be covered in salt as well. She, of course, feigns anger that the chef would do such a thing. Not wanting to eat sushi from a pissed off sushi chef, we ask to pay for the soup and leave. Needless to say, we won't be going back.

I've always had a great meal at Koi. The fish is fresh and very tasty. My go to sushi for the 12th south/Melrose area. My favorites are fresh salmon and spider roll!

It's rare to find great thai n sushi around here. Koi Sushi is the SPOT!. I love the welcoming environment. I love sushi to the point where I sit right in front at the sushi bar. The Sushi chef Dara was a great host and had to ask the name and compliment him there! It was busy but worth it at the same time. =)

My experience at Koi Sushi and Thai was overall was subpar. The atmosphere was delightful, but my boyfriend and I were quickly disappointed with the service. We were handed off between 3-4 people (hostess, waiter, then who knows what their job was). We were not the only ones in the restaurant walking around to find someone to give us our check after our meal. We shared a Spicy Tuna Roll and also Lo Mein. We left hungry, so I'd recommend getting more food or going elsewhere.

Went here on a whim with a group of 7- had a pretty short wait for a Friday night. I ordered an Age Dashi Tofu appetizer that was pretty good and for dinner chose the Pad Thai with tofu and no egg. That meal is delicious and I highly recommend!! PAD THAI DANKNESS The service could improve, not sure what happened but we had a server swap that threw me off a little. They also brought out the sushi on a huge plate- nice display!

Great special rolls with pictures on iPads which make it easy to view. They must stay busy with sushi orders because waiting to get your sushi does take some time. No wait to be seated though on a Friday night. Better go with good company and not be in a hurry. The food was well worth the wait!

This place makes me want to rub wasabi in my eyes. First we put our name on the list and they said 20 min we said ok we'll be right back. Took our name off the list not five min later. Took 25 min to take our drink orders another 15 to bring them. 30 min to order and 45 to get a wrong order and another 15 to our cold thai food. To top it all off we had 4 different waiters and horrible service from all of them.

Been eating at Koi for about a year now. Good sushi, good pad thai and I'm a fan of the beef pho. I also love the garlic and ginger sauce chicken, and the soy sauce noodles. The only downside: I love spicy dishes, but the spiciness is never consistent. Once I ordered a level 3 spicy dish and it had no spice, and another time I ordered no spice and it cleared my sinuses. But I usually ask for the spice tray and it makes everything all better. I've seen this restaurant go from no customers about a year ago to a packed house. Prices are fair, and the food has always been good.

Last night we had a party of four and the service was horrible! Our food took almost 2 hours it get to table and it all come at different times. The service has always been so.so but after last night we will not be back.

Great food. Terrible service. We had a large party (20) and it took us 3 hours. And I'm not exaggerating. It was probably an hour before they ever took our order. And at the end of the meal they had to go around and ask each of us what we had. The sushi was outstanding, but I won't be back.

So the quest for great Pho in Nashville continued today. Growing weary thinking that I wasn't going to find a phenomenal bowl of this steamy goodness. I decided to give Koi a try after seeing Will M's review. I was quite excited that finally my quest successful at this restaurant. I walked in to the restaurant and the host asked how many people(1), he then said to sit wherever... Why ask? He then came over with my menu and asked what I would like to drink. Upon asking what beers they had, he sighed, and told me to wait a minute while he got the drink menu. When he came back he tossed the menu down on the table while saying their inside... At this point I was about to leave but the Pho was calling to me from the kitchen like a Siren. For the rest of the meal I had two different people come by my table to take care of my food. These guys were courteous, happy, and understood customer service. Not sure where the first guy disappeared to but I was happy for the vanishing act. My spicy yellowtail rolls came out and were tasty but in no way spicy. The Pho on the other hand came to the table and it was like there was a party in my olfactory. The aroma surrounded me and I could barely wait to finish my last roll and dive in. Before putting anything into the broth I decided to try it. It was as full in taste as it was in smell. After adding the bean sprouts, a few basil leaves, and jalapenos I dug in to a greatest bowl of Pho I have had in Nashville. Despite the horrible first impression I left with a smile and I was quite full. It was a bit pricy compared to a lot of the places I go for Pho but worth it.

We've been regulars at Koi on 8th South for years, so we were happy to hear they opened one in East Nashville, close to home. When I mentioned to a friend that I planned to check it out for my birthday dinner last night, she wasn't supportive of the idea. Disturbed, I turned to Yelp! to see what was up. Anyway, we returned to the one on 8th to be safe. As always, the experience was great. Food delicious, service friendly and prompt, prices reasonable, and we were in and out in under an hour. After dozens of visits, the consistency of this place is spot on. I highly recommend the Dynamite Roll, the Pad Thai (from 1 to 5 spicy, I get 6) and the Pho. Good martinis too for less than $8 each. I'm sure the new East location will get there over time, but meanwhile I'll happily drive a few miles south.

Went here with 3 others on a Friday night and waited 30 min to order food. Got the shrimp fried rice. It was descent. Went to the bathroom and saw one of the waitresses walk out without washing her hands. Overall, descent food, terrible service, bad health conditions.

The food is always decent, always reliable. Whether you're hankering for sushi, Thai, or Vietnamese (the pho is fantastic!), you won't leave disappointed. But always, always, always count on mediocre service & a long wait. Even if you're the only customer, it will be a long wait. Even if you're getting carry-out, you guessed it, long wait!

I've been coming here for so long! I come here more than any other sushi restaurant In Nashville. The sushi is amazing. The Thai food is incredible and the Asian cuisine (chicken teriyaki) is stellar. The service staff is so nice and recognizes me and my friends when we go in. The vibe is great with many seating options. Go here !

Good sushi. Love, love the Bahama blue roll. Seriously, try it. Can be a little slow service, but overall not bad. I hit this place for lunch about once a week, and I like it.

This place has a really cool interior with traditional Japanese style seating and American style seating. They have a HUGE selections of rolls. It took us forever to select a roll because so many of them sounded so good. The rolls were huge and full of meat! This place isn't the best sushi I've had in Nashville but they do what they do well.

I know, I know...it has only been three days since I posted my original review. But after posting, I was craving the Pho and veggie sushi -- so I ordered it to go. I must say I was pleasantly surprised at not only the delicate packaging of my food, but the quality of these two items were spot on from my first visit. That.Is.Not.Easy.To.Do . The veggie sushi, again, tasted VERY fresh, and was quite delicious. The Pho broth was completely separate from the meat, noodles, basil, cilantro, bean sprouts, etc. All the items I asked "extra" for, they delivered. I made three meals out of that Pho, and it was FANTASTIC. I will be back!

Ehhh ... Not my favorite. It was a little over priced for what it was in my opinion. I did order it to go so maybe it's better if you dine in.

  • Sharon P.

The food here is quite good...sushi, pad Thai, vermicelli, red curry, pho...the drinks however are full of ice, not drink. The problem really is the service. I would rate it at a D. So, the food is good and worth a trip, but if you care about doing anything for the rest of your evening go somewhere else.

Sushi is horrible. Fish isn't fresh. Stick with the grill menu, its much better. On the bright side, they're open through the afternoon. Most sushi places aren't.

Pros: food and ambiance Cons: poor service I have come to Koi on Franklin Rd a few times. I like all of their food, and most is a four or five star example of that particular dish. However, I don't think I have had good service once. After a lunch today at a small burger joint in Dickson, I have a stark contrast between good and poor service. I hope they find a way to improve their service in a meaningful way.

Considering that it is a combo Thai/Japanese place it is quite good. The sushi is decent, the Thai food is quite good, and the servers are really nice. I ordered a Pad Kee Mao (drunken noodles) with no egg and they made a mistake and brought it w egg. They promptly changed it and were very nice about my dietary needs. Highly recommend it.

Carryout. Sometimes it is an absolute life-saver. I was over at a friend's house feeling extremely burnt out and even though we both had other plans for the evening, we ditched them and decided to stay in to watch movies and nosh on Thai food instead. Heavenly! She lives in the 12 South neighborhood and suggested that order Koi to which I was totally down as I am obsessed with Thai and always willing to try a new spot. Koi is located on 8th Avenue across the street from Athens and next to the new Melrose. Our food was ready on time and piping hot. She ordered the Pad Thai. I opted for a Panang Curry ($9.95) with tofu along with some edamame. I requested native spicy and was a bit disappointed as it wasn't as hot as I had hoped but overall my food was tasty. I prefer Thai Phooket's curry but Koi's will probably come in second. I'd like to try the extensive sushi menu on my next visit and perhaps dine in too. Overall, my experience was positive but not 4 star worthy. I will update after I try the sushi though!

Serve lady was very rude and very confrontational. She took 25 minutes from when I sat down to take my order. Seemed overwhelmed and food was good though. I come here about once a week but after that I will be going elsewhere. I don't understand how a server lady can be so rude.

I am a new Thai lover and have only eaten at a few Thai restaurants so I am not sure how valid my opinion here is, but here it goes. I loved it! I was in Nashville for work and we had just picked up a few coworkers at the airport and we were all starving. We were originally looking for a BBQ restaurant which ended up being too far away so we decided on Thai. We were doing a U-Turn and saw this place and figured what the heck, so we parked and went on in. It is very small, but cute. We were greeted right away and given menus. My co-worker's boyfriend actually ordered Sushi. He thought it was a bit pricey for the amount he was given, but said it was tasty. My favorite dish is Pad Se Ew which they didn't have so I asked our waitress to bring me whatever dish was closest to that. She made a great choice because whatever it was made me very happy! Some of the other's ordered Pad Thai (spelling?), which they said was very good as well. My overall experience was pleasant and I'd probably go again if I was in the area.

Solid 3.5 stars. I first tried Koi this week. Despite my temptation to ditch my dinner plans and spend my night getting sloshed at M.L. Rose next door, I knew the pretty girl waiting for me at Koi would be perturbed. Little did I know that in addition to Sapporo and the usual beer selection, Koi also has a score of rotating microbrews. Score! That gave me something delicious to sip on as I pored over the menu--which is absurdly long. I settled on...drumroll please...sushi and Thai. On the sushi side of the menu, the portions are substantial. The hunks of tuna on the nigiri were gynormous, and the rolls are similarly large--although the speciality rolls have speciality prices. I got a spicy tuna roll and found it to be an average value for the price. For my Thai food, I tried a cup of the tom kha soup, which was OK but not spectacular. If Koi management is reading this, you definitely need more galangal and kaffir lime leaves in the soup to make it more authentic. I also ordered the pad kra prow (basil chicken) and asked for it to be prepared 5/5 spicy, and while I personally would have liked it spicier, I think what I got is at the upper end of most people's tolerances. The flavor was reasonably decent, too, and I enjoyed the leftovers the next day. Koi loses a point for authenticity. I find that to be common at many of the "hybrid" Thai/sushi places. When I asked for prik nam pla, which is the Thai name for bird chills in fish sauce (THE most popular condiment in Thai food), the waitress stared back at me blankly. When I explained that I just wanted something to spice things up, she eventually brought me some Sriacha sauce. That doesn't cut it in my book. If I were in the Green Hills area again and craving Thai, sushi, or both, I'd not hesitate to visit Koi again.

Overall, 3.5! My good friend is a HUGE fan of Koi and has been buggin' me to go since October, but I've always declined due to my vegan diet. I decided to finally go with him and made sure they had some veg-friendly options. Upon walking in, I dug the understated ambiance and low lighting and the staff was pretty friendly. I ordered a big fruity cocktail for $7.50, but it was lacking in the actual booze, so I don't believe it was worth the price. My meal consisted of the vegetable roll and sweet potato roll along with a seaweed salad and vegetable spring rolls. The latter two were tasty, the veggie roll was bland-ish, but the sweet potato roll was phenomenal. I also noticed that their Thai section included many options that could be made vegetarian, so I will definitely be back to try that portion of the menu. However... I wonder if it can even hold a candle to the super-authentic Smiling Elephant just down the street?! :)

You wouldn't expect this place to be so fancy and laid back from the looks of the outside. It has a nice vibe to it. I love the variety between sushi and Thai dishes. They have the best Pad Thai I have ever tasted, but I am no connoisseur by any means. It's a good place to have a lunch meeting. They do carryout orders and they are pretty quick about it. Parking can be pretty tricky. I usually park near M.L. Rose, which is on the same strip on Franklin Pk.

Koi Sushi is new (as of Early 2012) and thought i'd try after reading some pretty good yelp reviews. And it is pretty good. Upon walking it, I was impressed. No funky smell, a few seats open, cool big red and black fish art on the wall and some really cool big like drift wood tables. There even some tables where you can sit on pillows and eat the traditional thai way! I had the Hunters Club roll, Wonton Soup and just a simple Spicy Tuna. I love a menu with complete 4 x 6 photos of each specialty roll. I want to see what to expect and if it has too much fish on it or not. I'm all about menus with more photos and less reading. Very cool /different kind of menu. The sushi chef was all smiles and asked how the rolls were. Good. In the bar/where you can see the raw fish I saw some eggs. Quail eggs. The Chef asks if I'd like to try some for free - he went on tell me they use it some thai items. I learned something new! The service was fast, and friendly. Cool atmosphere and I'd say the sushi is good. Not great but good. Parking wasn't a problem for me, but it is somewhat limited. The prices were average. $5 for basic roll, $8-$11 for specialty, and my cup of soup was $2.50 I also looked for anyone eating thai dishes, and I couldn't see anyone. All sushi rolls here.

Went to Koi Sushi & Thai for lunch on a Wednesday. I parked right in front of the restaurant, but was terrified when leaving because you must back out onto busy Franklin Pike, blindly! Thankfully, I was with a friend who had to coax me to back out. The booths are very cool, with lounge/picnic table looking seating. I ordered the Vermicilli Noodle dish and my friend ordered a curry dish. I was not a big fan of my dish, but her's was delicious. The Vermicilli Noodles had too much mint for my taste. The curry was awesome though. If I return, that's what I will be ordering. Decent prices.

Massamun curry native Thai isn't very hot. Could of kicked it up a few notches for the real deal. Flavor is ok. Not best in Nashville but better than Brentwood options for Thai.

I have eaten a lot of sushi around the world and Koi is as good as any I have ever experienced. This is a hidden jewel in Melrose area. The staff is friendly and helpful. The custom rolls are huge and tasty. We eat here at least once a week - dining in or carrying out.

Satisfies my pho and sushi cravings, but doesn't blow me away. It's really more of a 3.5 star review. The wait staff are always attentive enough, but not overly friendly. The pho was really quite good today for Nashville. I like when places bring out the pho with the beef still mostly pink. I know lots of places won't do this so they don't know that the broth cooks the beef. I was left wanting more of it.

Really enjoyed the picture book of all of their available rolls! Great atmosphere, and a huge selection of unique rolls. Everyone in the group found something they liked. And they had a large wine and beer list that I was happy about. I look forward to returning very soon!

Ordered take out from here the other evening. I've past by the place on numerous occasions, probably saw it (I think), but in the end I kept on driving or stopped in next door at M L Rose (a.k.a. Melrose Pub). But, a co-worker suggested that Koi is one of his most enjoyable Thai experiences since moving to Nashville recently and since it is in Melrose - which is super close to the house - I decided to give it a whirl. First, the inside looked very nice. The temperature was not freezing "we run too much A/C in the South" cold, and the decor was definitely "date-night" decor. I applaud them. But, got take out. :-) So, let's talk food. Orders: Chicken fried rice Chicken and shrimp Pad Thai Chicken and shrimp curry (on 1 to 5 scale of hot, got it 4) Steamed rice (comes with the curry) For any Celiac / gluten-intolerant person, you can request that all of your food be made with gluten free soy sauce. Koi keeps the restaurant well stocked with GF soy sauce and the gentleman who took my order knew what I was going to ask when I started to ask for the Pad Thai to be made without soy. He suggested that they have GF. Well done, sir, well done! Huge fans of places that take food allergies seriously. The chicken fried rice (GF soy sauce) was egg-cellent. The curry and steamed rice as well. Although, do not mistake them for some Americanized Thai restaurant. When they cook up a #4 spicy... they mean to put some serious oomph behind their spicy. So, watch out. Fortunately, I like "kick" but I was definitely expecting it not to be as hot as it was. I see several comments on here about their Pad Thai. Agree with all. It just isn't that great. There's... something... missing. I cannot put my finger or tongue on what it is that is missing. But, there's just something. Maybe ask them if they can make it spicy like they do other dishes if you really like Pad Thai - because I noticed he didn't ask me a level of spice for the Pad Thai... maybe I should have suggested one. Anyhow, fanboy here. Will.Be.Back

Find the best bowl of Pho in Nashville, here! To the untrained eye, a thai and sushi place is not the ideal place, unless you are a discerning person in the know.. almost everyone that works here is vietnamese. I was very happy to hear the broth spent 2 days boiling to perfection. The beef, sliced super thin with a meat slicer. The bowl, was just the right size. And the noodles, were cooked to the right texture. Hint: the art of eating this bowl is to portion the beef when you eat. Cost was $9.56 + $2.44 tip = $12, a bit pricy If you compare to other asian communities. I mean it's like half the price in other cities, or less. I guess beggers can't be choosers. Decor had some sexy colors, lots of space. I'd get Pho, and some sushi and if you sit near the paintings, theres some cushions to lay down on if you ate too much.

Sushi was pretty damn awesome. It's on par with PM and Ichiban, but I would definitely come here over other sushi restaurants simply for the cozy atmosphere inside. Also, how cool is it that they have both Thai and Japanese to satisfy everyone in your party? Coming here again to try the Thai!

Love that you can get pho and sushi here! Both really good. Great place to sit and eat or grab to go.

Sushi was pretty darn awesome! The bite of Pad Thai I stole from my friend's plate was okay. It was pretty bland, and I was surprised that they do not have a spice tray or anything besides Sriracha to spice it up. Mike J.'s assessment of Applebee's Thai is spot on. That said, I had some delicious Gyoza as a starter. The pork filling was hearty and flavorful. The Fuji roll was tasty. Since it was my first visit I went with one americanized roll and one order of yellow tail nigiri. The yellow tail was fresh and tasty, however they gave me the tiniest pinch of rice under each piece. Next time I'll just order sashimi. The atmosphere was gorgeous and the service was decent. I'll be back for sure!

First off, the decor is adorable. Our waitress was going to seat us at a standard 4 chair table when we spotted these awesome booths that had Japanese type pillows you sit on. It was a done deal after that. You have to crawl in like you would a picnic table, but other than that it was SWEET! As for the food, the sushi and miso soup were DELICIOUS. Very flavorful and fresh. I also recommend their Tropical Island cocktail which is a mix of pineapple, strawberry, elderberry flavored vodka and pineapple juice. It was off the chain. All in all, this place totally exceeded my expectations and I will definitely be returning!

This is a great place for solid Asian food. The atmosphere is nice- it's much larger inside than it looks on the outside. Nice large tables, clean, well-decorated. Service was great- no complaints there. The menu has a large variety of rolls and Thai, Japanese, even Vietnamese entrees. We had the pad thai and a few rolls, because this is how we judge every Thai/Sushi restaurant we go to. The pad thai was really great- good flavor, not too saucy, really good amount of meat. The rolls were okay- not as good as dedicated sushi restaurants elsewhere in Nashville. I'd probably stick to the entrees here. Also, miso soup was solid. Since this is right around the corner from home, I'd definitely make this a frequent spot!

The sushi was good. I got the Pacific roll and I really liked it, had some kind of spicy coconut sauce on top, and whats not to like about that. They have a lot of interesting roll options also, one with rasberry sauce and brie, what?? I almost got it, maybe next time. The problem was with the service. It was SOOOO SLOW. Our waitress didnt come back once to refill our water, to check how the food was. Nothing! We waited we had to stare the woman down for a solid 15 minutes trying to get our bill. I literally had to give her the stink eye before she finally came over to give us our bil. So, in conclusion, food-good. Service-bad.

A nice space and nice staff, sushi and sashimi mediocre, white tuna roll had no taste and was mixed in with regular tuna. Agadashi tofu was good size portion and nicely done. Pablos spicy eggplant was mediocre, as someone else said, the applebee's of Thai. Ask for spices and sauces to customize your dishes, right now they are keeping it too safe and simple. Must say though they made a wicked good wasabi martini and the edamame were done to a nickety. A good place to stop and get a drink and a nibble, but keep those thai food expectations real for now.

I have been hearing so mush about Koi Sushi & Thai for quite a while, so today I decided to give them a try----- Bad idea!! first off my waitress seemed unconcerned and actually kinda pissed she was there, I ordered the beef Pho & spicy crawfish roll, I asked for the Pho to be spicy-- was told they could bring out tray of spices! what!! this is suppose to be a Thai restaurant! they can't do spicy!? well the Pho came out but not the spice tray, Pho was just beef broth with a few strips of beef, waitress never came around to ask how everything was and still no spice tray! spicy crawfish roll was good, a little overpriced. Overall I would not recommend, mainly overpriced- lacking the over all flavor of what I have come to expect of good Thai----fool me once---

Back again yesterday, skipped the Thai and focused on the sushi. Yellow tail roll and Alaska rolls are our baseline sushi, both were above average, the YT roll bordered on Very Good (fish fresh, large "finger" cuts, not too much scallion, rice had hint of vinegar). Salmon roll was tasty, but a bit sloppy in presentation (loosely rolled, too much rice) - still once it hit the palate it was all good. Service was attentive. As a nice touch, the ginger salads were "normal" sized and only a $1.50 each (same salad at Sushi Yobi will set you back $4.50 each). We had three rolls, two salads and a beer - our tab was $25.00.

As a South Nashvillian, I was STOKED to have another sushi offering in the area, so I was very excited to try Koi. I drive past it often on my way to the Kroger there on 8th, so I've had my eye on it for some time. Well this past weekend we finally noticed it was open so we gave it a try. It was, in a word, AMAZING! My hubby and I get sushi quite often and I like to think we have a pretty discerning taste when it comes to the freshness of the nigiri, and Koi certainly did not disappoint. The fish was all very fresh tasting, and good sized pieces on top of the rice. We also got three different rolls, which were all very unique and delicious, as well as reasonably priced. I am giving 5 stars to encourage others to give Koi a try, and support this local business in South Nashville. This is exactly the kind of place the area needs, and I for one intend to become a regular. Now GO GET YOU SOME SUSHI! :-)

After the initial gag of incense when you first walk in, your sinus cavity will adjust, promise. From there, enjoy the lunch menu. I had lo mein which was delicious. The sushi was not good at all but go for the hot food. Service was good.

One of my go to sushi places in Nashville. I've never been disappointed in the food here. The sushi is amazing and the service is always good. Maybe a little more expensive than other sushi places though..

No one wants a local 12th S restaurant to succeed more than me, but my three visits to Koi have been my last. On the first visit in January, my wife and I sat at the bar, great sushi and atmosphere, horrible service. I've seen a couple of posts about having to flag someone down constantly, and that was it in a nutshell, not to mention they were less than half filled, and had been open for awhile. Had to have been an off nite. Second visit was a packed weekend night in February, we brought a table full of friends sure that the first time was a fluke, and it was embarrasing. Great sushi, but once again, horrible service, and the server kept screwing up our orders. It was a friend's quasi birthday party, and we now owe them more after that fiasco. Last visit, my wife and I went again on a quiet weeknight early. Server was very attentive and friendly. We were sure that this was it, and that all the kinks had been worked out. After toasting and downing our first sake, the second pour revealed something in it. Maybe it was a piece of red pepper, maybe it was a piece of salmon, maybe it was a piece of a finger? Enough is enough; some things aren't meant to be. We were hopefull that we could have a great sushi place right around the corner from our house, but we are driving back across town to Sonobana, which we never should have left, and is a great place. Koi should keep it's Franklin place open as it sounds great, but as far as expansion; fail..

Had Sunday dinner with family who are regulars. Good crowd. Good thai. I had the pad thai just north of thai hot. Well done. Tasted a few curries too. Very good flavor. Veggie roll was fresh. Good service but they did mess a few things up with the check. Overall the experience was good. One parting thought. The place was filled with hipsters so if that is your scene this would seem to be your spot.

When it comes to sushi, I know my stuff. Living in the 8th Ave South area in town, I was really excited about the opening of Koi. It's not the best in Nashville, but it is good sushi. The interior is decorate nicely, adequate and safe parking, and the menu has a wide variety to choose from. The service is efficient in greeting you, seating you, and taking your order. I have been to Koi Sushi several times since their opening, and I would recommend Koi sushi for a casual dining experience.

I live maybe 2mins down the street so I was ecstatic to see a new restaurant come in on 8th ave S. I've ordered takeout 3 times, each time hoping it'd get better but it hasn't. The sushi has been, hands down, the worst I've ever had. Every time. I'm not that picky but can tell when something isn't right. We ordered 2 specialty rolls the last time : The red devil and the fuji. The $11 rolls had fake everything! It's was imitation crab and the salmon tasted like it was canned. Terrible! I also ordered the spicy tuna roll and the tuna had the consistency of mush. Even the ginger on the side was fake. My wife does love the pho but she ordered the ginger salad a few times and the ginger salad dressing was subpar as well. I really wanted to like Koi but every time it's been a huge disappointment and waste of money.

My wife and I dined there this evening and the food exceeded expectations. We are vegetarian and we ate spring rolls, tom kah soup and I had kom ka prow. The soup was incredibly fresh and steaming hot and the rice dish was phenomenal. We will absolutely return to try the curry.

Was too busy enjoying my lunch to review last visit. Going back today for lunch. The best thing about this place is the freshness of everything. On my last two visits I've had separate dishes and freshness was consistent. Learned not to order the ice tea-as they charge $1.95 per glass (ouch). Water is my choice next time...Ha!

I think it's the best Thai in Nashville. I usually don't like pad Thai because it's too sweet...but these guys have a great version of the dish. The stir-frys are good as well....as is the ground-chicken Thai salad (can't remember the name, but it's the one with ginger, garlic, fish sauce, hot sauce and lime.)

I just finished having lunch at Koi. Since I live near there, I was really excited to have another sushi place opening. I noticed that it had gotten a few mixed reviews, so I was expecting to have a mixed experience. However, I was dead wrong. A friend and I each ordered an appetizer and a sushi roll. Everything was delicious! I had the Rock and Roll. She had the Vegas Roll. Both were very fresh, generous in size and absolutely delicious. I will definitely be back! It was pretty quiet for lunch time on a week day, so I really hope their business starts to pick up. I can vouch for the sushi. You will not be disappointed.

For the amount of time that we waited to get our food along with the odd method of 3 different servers for a 4-top, Koi couldn't stand up to the bad experience. The food couldn't justify the poor service. It took them 15 minutes to notice that we were sat. In this case, the best thing about the restaurant is its ambience, but I will not be returning any time soon.

  • Suz J.

Entering it was apparent that if the food matched the ambience, the meal would be decent. Sushi rolls were moderately priced and more than worth it. Thai Pad Ka Prow chicken was sauteed and expertly accented with basil, garlic, bamboo shoots and sliced vegetables. The pad thai noodles and sprouts reminded me of pad thai with shrimp I recently sipped in east Nashville. Being happily greeted by the owner of the locally owned Asian restaurant made it seem more personal. The meal was decent and the waitress was kind.

We went to Koi for the Sushi. I am fairly new to Sushi, and I would recommend this for someone who hasn't eaten sushi very often. There is a wide selection that should satisfy most people. We read through other people's reviews before ordering, and surprisingly, the sushi was not what people talked about. What kept popping up in review after review was the Pho. Pho is the vietnamese soup with rice noodles and whatever type of protein you would like added to it. Based on all these mentions, we tried the Pho. It was great and a nice new food find. Make sure to throw in the additions like the jalapeños and basil (?). Whatever it was made it very flavorful. The sushi was really good as well. We have now tried the 8th Avenue Nashville location as well as the Franklin location. The food was great at both locations, but the 8th avenue decor and atmosphere is much nicer at the Nashville location. Like most people say, the service is a bit slower. I prefer the relaxed pace and think it a great way to enjoy the meal.

Welcome to the neighborhood, Koi! I am currently snacking on a generous portion of Shrimp Tempura Udon. Menu was easy to read and I had a hard time finding anything over $10. The most expensive sushi roll was $9.95. The main dining room has high ceilings and there is great spacing between the tables. They even have some fun ones where you sit on the tatami mats. They have a full bar and a short sushi bar. They recommend calling ahead for takeout, but it took 10 minutes for me as a walk-in. Staff was very friendly. I'll be back!

Undeniably the best sushi in town and we've tried them all. The best quality and freshest ingredients make all the difference. If you don't like sushi, order anything on the menu - I promise you'll be happy.

  • Jenn B.

AMAZING:) The staff is extremely nice. The sushi selection is bountiful and they even give you a menu that has pictures of each and every roll!!! This is great bc it helps you know what you are getting, but gets you in trouble bc then you want everything!! They are all normally priced as well. Inside the restaurant is very spacious! I wouldn't have thought so by looking at the outside, yet the space and decor surprises you when you walk in! I have been there several times and will definitely be a regular!

  • L. Y.

Meh. Guys behind the sushi bar are working hard. They did exactly what we asked. The rest of the staff? Joking, laughing, standing around. We had to flag someone down every time we needed drink refills. We had to flag someone down for the check. We had to get up and walk the check and credit card over to the staff and hand it to them and say we wanted to leave. The freshness of the fish was on par with Sonobana...that is to say, it was fine and would have been okay had it been cooked, but it was not quite as fresh as I like my nigiri to be.

  • Michelle C.

    Sushi is the star!

    (4)
  • Liz T.

The service was extremely poor. The sushi was bland and dry. The sashimi was cut in huge chunks- very unappealing and clearly not Japanese. Furthermore, the chicken in the Pad Thai was of such low quality I could not stomach it. Unfortunately this restaurant proves once again that the vast majority of restaurants with Thai and Japanese offerings fail to deliver on either. Stick with Samurai for sushi and Siam Cuisine for Thai.
