Mexican Cuisine
If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.

Ok, let me start out by saying, I am from Texas... We take our Mexican food VERY seriously!! When I try a New Mexican food place, the first thing I judge them on is the chips and hot sauce (ya'll call it salsa)... If the chips and hot sauce isn't good, you might as well get up and leave, because you're not gonna be happy with your food either!! I had been dying to try this place, had heard several good things about it and I'm constantly on the hunt for authentic Mexican food that reminds me of home... I have to say, I think I may have finally found such a place!! I stopped by for an early lunch, was seated right away, chips and hot sauce delivered very quickly! I ended up being glad I got there early, because it filled up quick!! You know a place is good when they're packed for lunch on a Thursday!! So, chips and hot sauce... Delicious!! Nice and spicy!! Didn't taste like they dumped out a can of tomato paste and mixed some onions in it, like other places in town I've tried. Chips were super crispy and nice and thick, perfect for scooping up some hot sauce!! I ordered the Nachos El Mariachi and they were fantastic!! Had ground beef and shredded chicken, nice creamy sour cream - not the nasty cheap stuff some other places in town try to pass off as sour cream!! Really enjoyed my meal!! So, if you're looking for a pretty authentic Tex-mex experience, I'd say look no further than El Mariachi!!

Really good and really fast Mexican food. Not sure why there are some bad reviews. But this place is legit. Try it once at least before you make judgments based on other reviews. We had a lunch special and chicken fajitas and a drink. With tip paid $19.50. That's a steal especially considering the food was really good.

This is my go-to Mexican restaurant for lunch in the spring and fall because they have a GREAT covered outdoor seating area. The food is really good. I can honestly say I've never had bad service here either. The waiters and waitresses are always very attentive and helpful.

Me grandma and my boo decided to give mariachi a try again (see last review) and I'm happy to leave 4 stars. This time we ate in the outdoor patio area. My grandma likes to sit there so she can smoke haha. Chips and salsa, delicious, but salsa not spicy enough for me. The boo loved it. My plate: 2 tacos shredded beef rice and beans. Unlike last time, my tacos were loaded with beef this time! Rice was good, beans were up to standard. The only thing was the taco shells. They are nasty. I grew up eating authentic Mexican cuisine (parents owned a restaurant) so my standards are higher. This isn't California or Mexico though. So I'll cut some slack. New taco shells = 5 stars.

Standard Mexican fare, nothing bad but nothing spectacular either. Salsa is pretty spicy, I ordered the fajitas mexicanas, really good and had several shrimp in it. My wife had the spinach enchiladas, spinach did not seem fresh.

Definitely go for the Texas Margaritas. They have a bit more punch the the regular lime margaritas. On Fridays, they have $20 pitchers and 2-for-1 draft specials. The outdoor patio is covered with ample seating and several televisions. The waitstaff is also incredibly friendly and will offer great chips and salsa that is mildly spicy and thicker than some of the watery salsas you'll get at other Nashville restaurants. In terms of menu, there are some dishes that differentiate La Mariachi from other area Mexican restaurants, including some specialty dishes that I assume are named for family members or employees or friends. Seriously, the steak menu has the most appealing draw and value, especially the Bistec a La Diabla. I, however, was underwhelmed by the chimichanga and other combo platters. One note about cleanliness. I dropped my napkin, and when I went to pick it up for the floor, I realized there was a dirty butter knife on the floor next to my foot that was there before I got there. When I looked around, it looked like the floors were not swept as frequently as they probably should. It wasn't in dire straits, mind you, just slightly less kempt that I would've expected. Definitely not enough to alert the health department. On the scale of authenticity, this place delivers more spice level than some other local places. Keep towards the fajita and steak menu, and you'll be happy. And order the Texas margaritas.

Food was good. Portion sizes are smaller than other restaurants, but the service was good. All in all good experience.

Me and a friend went here last night at her suggestion and it was VERY good. My usual dish at most Mexican resturants is the Shrimp Quesadilla(had this Saturday at Chuy's ha ha) and it did not disappoint. It was HUGE, loaded with juicy shrimp, and all the fixings. This plate was only $7.75!!! Had this plus a Peach daquiri and my total bill was $13. NOT BAD! Very satisfied. Establishment was clean, we was seated, and watied on promplty, received our food in a few minutes. Ticket time was great! Will return! Dang...should have took a pic of my food! I couldn't eat the whole thing! Will do next time :-)

Yes..... They have a $2 and $3 margarita with real tequila in it. Staff is super nice and our bartender was fun and funny. I get a steak taco everywhere I go, and theirs didn't disappoint. The steak tasted fresh and I imagine their steak fajitas re excellent. Not sure if it's any good, but they also feature a Mexican style buffet for only $7. Happy I went!

Gag....dirty place the food was poor service was even worse. It's cheep but so is Taco Bell.

We drop in here occasionally, usually before we go bowling across the street. The food is generally edible, the margaritas are okay (a little too sweet for me), and the service is always friendly and efficient. Our last visit provided us with decent Chile Colorado, but a horrendous Alex Special (burnt nachos - chips with little else.)
(3)Lisa B.
I've been here two or three times and don't really have any complaints... but I don't really have anything terrific to say either. The food is decent, average Mexican fare. The margaritas are decent. The service is decent. There's a big patio for warm weather (often the distinguishing characteristic by which I refer to this place - the place with the patio - since I always forget the name...) Last time I was there, there was some sort of happy hour special advertised on handmade bright pink poster board signs that may or may not have been written by someone's child? They also made it clear that 2-4-1 deals only apply if one person drinks both beers because "sharing isn't fun." Overall I wouldn't necessarily recommend this place over other nearby options if someone was looking for Mexican food, but it'll do the trick if you're in the 100 Oaks area and have a craving.
(3)Kelly A.
The service was awful. I don't even think we had a waiter cause EVERYONE ignored us. I am a waitress and I didn't even want to leave anything more then 10 percent but my husband left it. The food was okay. Not coming back...ever.
(1)Minny R.
Nice down-to-earth Mexican restaurant. Generous with the free chips and salsa. Love the lunch buffet. Friendly staff.
(4)Terrell L.
Lunch was OK, nothing really to brag about other than it was Fast. Oh and I brought my home grown peppers, calante'
(3)Renee C.
Our favorite "hole in the wall" Mexican restaurant. My husband is obsessed with the fresh chicken tortilla soup! I love their cheap margaritas (that don't taste cheap). If you're looking for traditional Mexican (not Americanized white girl tacos!) this is your best bet in town!
(5)Kyle B.
Fantastic steak taco!!! Very good service!! And it's next to my bank!! Prices are perfect and the bar tender even flirts with you! In a good way!!

I'm quite the snob when it comes to Latin food. Therefore, I do not feel it would be fair to review El Mariachi's dishes. I will simply say I have eaten there twice and was definitely not impressed. However, I have stopped in several times for a beer (or three) with friends. The service is usually great, and the covered deck in warmer months is fantastic. The beer has always been ice cold, which makes the chips and salsa quite tasty. While brightly painted, the Ladies room is a bit of a disaster. A vent sits high on the wall, and as a direct connect to the elements, it makes for a rather chilly restroom in winter months. A small wall heater does exist, but it's just not enough to keep the restroom warm. One of the stall doors will not close properly, and neither stall provides a hook to hang your handbag or coat. The only mirror is on the opposite wall of the sinks. It's just weird...and cold. Parking has never been an issue, but getting your car into this lot can be. If coming from Berry Hill, I suggest turning left onto Eugenia Avenue, then the second right - taking the "back" route into the restaurant parking lot.
(2)Adam B.
Went here after works for drinks and lunch with co-workers. It took forever for us to get service. The drinks were good and food was okay. It was your normal Mexican restaurant food. If the service had been even half way decent they could have made a boat load of money off of us. Instead twice we had go find our server. This could halve so much potential if the would just half way try. I would try other places before coming here.
(2)Paul K.
It's completely acceptable food. There's really not a lot going on in the cuisine department, pretty sure it's restaurant supply cheese/tortillas/chips/everything, the deck is fabulous however. The staff is pretty good, the prices reasonable, if I was going for the food though I would probably go a mile down the road and hit El Ranchero, however, as stated, this place has a deck and that is pretty darn wicked. They have all a vegetarian can eat, from Vegetarian option #1 all the way to Vegetarian Option #7, basically any combination of cheese, beans, rice and tortilla you can come up with... which I think is 7 possible combinations. The margaritas are large, potent, and unrelenting in their attempts to get you to change your mind about the general dissatisfaction of being surrounded by 3 banks and a futon store. Only had bad service once there, and we're sort of unsure what happened as one of the waiters suggested to one of our group that perhaps we should go down to Logans and drink. I was informed of this and told that the manner was "y'all should leave" which was kind of odd as we were one of 3 groups out there and not obnoxious. Odd, we didn't leave, had no issues. Perhaps a misunderstanding or perhaps that waiter didn't like us - no idea. One thing to note if you go here at night and do not know the parking lot. Under no circumstances go out what appears to be the center - that will drop you off a sidewalk and create a sparks show for all the people on the deck. Go either far right or far left and make sure you're looking.

El Mariachi isn't anything special in terms of a culinary adventure, however if you are looking for some standard Mexican food you certainly won't walk away unhappy. They have all your old favorites... tacos, enchiladas, burritos, taco salads, ect. They also have vegetarian options on the menu. The food was decent, the staff was nice, the place has a patio and it was clean. All in all, if you are craving Mexican this place will meet your needs.
(3)Sammy K.
I eat 3 star meskin a lot in this damn town. and this place gets the job done. I've passed out here in a booth by myself a time or 5.
(3)Mariah B.
I love that place. They have a patio and you can smoke on it. My favorite dish is a shrimp quesadilla. House margaritas are heavenly - I love to have them for breakfast ( I know - weird ) My favorite restaurant and its close to my house.
(5)Dylan B.
Our favorite place for Mexican food. Not "gourmet," but I'm not sure Mexican food as American's know it is meant to be gourmet. We always leave satisfied and like to make our own dish out of the cheesy rice with chicken and have them add fajita veggies. Very reasonable too.
(4)Stephanie C.
I live nearby so I frequent El Mariachi quite a bit. Perfect before or after a movie at 100 Oaks. The food here is totally average - exactly what you expect from a Mexican joint. The thing that makes El Mariachi stand out is the HUGE covered patio. It seats about 50 people. Perfect in spring, summer and fall. El Mariachi does have one dish that I really love. Grilled Chicken Plate #2 is so plain, yet so yummy. Rice and pulled chicken with queso on top. p.s. the margaritas taste a bit weak, but all that sweet and sourness much be hiding the tequila cause I'm sober... then I'm tanked. That stuff will sneak up on ya.

My wife and I started going to this place after we became sick of Las Palmas on 8th by Kroger. Maybe it's only a by comparison thing, but we've been really happy here. Is it authentic or real special? No, but after Las Palmas became more a la carte, more gristle in the chicken, and watered down tiny margaritas, this place seems like heaven. The deck is huge and a plus. You can even feed the finches and grow in cholesterol together. When no one is looking of course. And the wicker light fixtures kick ass. They get half a star solely on the fixtures and the struggling rose bush by the front door. I also like that half of the original flourescent cabana sign is now enclosed with the patio. They also have old tube TV's on the porch, usually not too loud, and an impressive mix of ecclectic chairs and other things hung up in the rafters. Character counts, maybe more when drinking, but it counts. The food seems better to us not only because of larger portions, but better combinations and specials. I get a Special Burrito, one chicken, one beef, a little lettuce, sour cream, and salsa on top. Pretty dang good in my opinion. Haven't hit gristle yet. I get the feeling they want us to like the food and are trying. That is an improvement. Have also tried other mainstays typical of mexican places and I like them all. After we have two margaritas a piece, we are effectively able to get our buzz on. I can't ask anymore in that department, but admittedly am not very discriminating. They are not complete margarita mix bombs, and taste semi-strong at first. If I pucker up and get a shiver with a little bite on the first sip, that's a good thing! My wife is a vegan and she tries all kinds of stuff. She's pretty happy with the place and we've been going every other week or so with no complaint. I also must warn you that there is a Futon store next door. Futons remind me of all kinds of weird times in my life, but I am able to work thru it, and really enjoy this place! The staff is usually very nice and prompt. The other patrons sometimes are a little sketchy, but I don't feel threatened, and have even communicated in a friendly manner with some of them. Springer-esque looking folks sometimes, but I bet they think I look like wierd, so all is fair. I would def check this place out, and keep your hopes realistic. Go to taco mammacita or whatever that place is if you want flashy.

I've been here a few times, and always for the lunch. I always get the grilled chicken and rice, ~$6. It's pretty straight forward: rice + chicken + cheese dip poured over the top. I know it's not much but it is great. Sometimes, I go places and they have very unique and innovative dishes, but lack technical cookings skills. All I am saying is if you are in the business of selling food, please cook the basics perfect then move to more elaborate entrees. That being said that's why I love this dish. They grilled the chicken perfectly, seasonings compliment the grilled flavor, and it wasn't dry. Placed delicately over a warm bed of rice with everybody's favorite cheese dip holding it all together. Chips were tasty. They were thin style but extremely crunchy. The salsa had a good kick of spice, so those of you can't handle a little heat, beware. All in all after the many times coming here, they have yet to disappoint, therefore I'm giving a positive review.

I have been searching for standard, Americanized, yummy, cheesy, Mexican food for quite some time now. I tried and didn't like Las Palmas, Cozymels, and Chuy's isn't really Mexican (their rice stinks so they are no good to me). My husband brought me here because he has lunch during the work week here all the time, and I loved it! The inside is cute, very stereotypical Mexican restaurant, it was perfect! At first we went to sit out on the patio, but once we realized that patio was smoker friendly we went back inside, which was no problem. Their prices were very fair, especially their alcohol. I had two very boozy frozen lime margaritas and really enjoyed them. And apparently their 32 oz beers were buy one get one! What a deal! I ordered the chicken quesadillas, they were delicious. Cheesy, juicy, and hot. Their rice is great, and rice is always one of my favorite parts of Mexican restaurants. My husband got a beef burrito and taco (like he always does) and enjoyed them very much. As I've stated, this isn't a ground breaking Mexican restaurant. They have delicious Mexican classics that most certainly will be back for! Very happy with my experience.
(4)Travis A.
Super fast Mexican food here. Nothing extraordinary, but a decent meal and good service... Much better option than say, any Las Palmas location these days.
(3)Libby B.
El Mariachi is a pretty average Mexican restaurant, good enough to satisfy a craving, but perhaps not someplace I'd recommend to someone looking to taste some truly authentic Mexican cuisine. Their menu covers all your traditional Mexican food items - burritos, fajitas, nachos, etc, and also includes vegetarian choices and things like burgers for kids. I will say that this is probably not the place to come to if you're looking for a light meal - even a single beef burrito seems excessive to eat all in one sitting. All in all, not a bad place. The service is speedy, the atmosphere is festive, and the patio is a lovely place to spend a cool summer evening.
(3)Chad R.
I visited El Mariachi with my dad for lunch yesterday. The restaurant is clean and nicely decorated and furnished. Those are the positive things I can say about it. The food was bad. My dad had a Speedy Gonzalez and I had Huevos Rancheros. Both of us felt that our food had was bland and we have had much better food at other Mexican places. It was the worst meal I have ever had at any Mexican restaurant in Middle Tennessee. The service was even worse. Our server was absent for most of the time and rarely even bothered to refill our drinks. She spent most of her time talking to a guy who was two booths down from us who was apparently a regular there. We even had to walk up to her to ask for our check. You should never have to approach the server to ask for your own check due to their inattention! Needless to say, that was our first and last visit to El Mariachi.
(2)Michael H.
I love El Marachi. Very friendly staff, great fajitas and chimichangas! The patio is one of the best in town for Mexican restaurants. It's a great place before bowling or the movies!
(4)Danielle R.
I love this place. Great food and great service. Been going for years great drinks
(5)Max K.
My wife ordered a dish, but what appeared was completely different. When we asked them to replace it with a correct entrée the waitress looked like she was about to spit in our food. My food was average... but since when do Mexican restaurants charge for chips and salsa refills? :) "Unamerican".
(2)S S.
This is the second worst Mexican restaurant I have experienced in my adult life. I got one of their combination platters. Think cheese dip that looks like snot, taquitos that are about as good at the frozen things you get from cost-co and very very unauthentic quesadilas. It is the kind of place your cousin who has never been outside the US thinks is 'exotic'.
(1)Robin S.
I went here last night with a friend who doesn't really like Mexican food, and another who swears this is the best place ever--she and her husband go almost every Sunday. Well, when we left, she was apologizing that this experience was a total fluke and it's not normally like this. Yeah, I was not so impressed. The patio is great, for starters. I can see how that is a huge draw of this place. The waitress (who was not the person that "normally" waits on my friend, I guess) brought out chips and salsa, but the chips tasted burnt. We asked for another basket, and these didn't taste much better. But we were starving so we ate them anyway. I also ordered sangria--that tasted like fruit punch. It was not good. Usually, sangria is served with fruit in it and some ice, but this had neither. Just a weird color, and I half expected the Hawaiian Punch character to jump out at us while we were eating. Anyway. Food was so-so. Got the chicken quesadilla, and it was fine but not nearly mind-blowing. I'll go again, on the advice of my friend--apparently, it's usually a better experience than this. I'll update this after my next visit, but for now, two stars.
(2)Kelly T.
I like sitting on the patio and the margaritas are HUGE! I think the food is okay & cheap.
(4)Johnny N.
Patio for drinks gives it a couple stars.
(2)John G.
I come here with some of my co-workers and I'm not sure if we come here for the patio or for the food, because both are good. I don't know if it is "authentic" because I have never been to Mexico, but it is pretty darn good. After sampling the majority of the menu, I usually decide on the chicken chimichangas, although there are some really good lunch combos that allow for a good sampling.
(4)Tart L.
Do you get the idea from the name that beefy Mexican singers will stroll up to your table and sing Mexican classics? You guessed it, and I think they're the best mariachi singers in Music City, USA. Skip requesting "La Cucaracha!" That might go over as good as requesting "When the Saints Go Marchin' In" at Preservation Hall. El Mariachi is worth the drive for the musicians, and for the food. It's in Berry Hill near Melrose. Call first for times they play.
(4)Melody H.
My other favorite of two Mexican restaurants. I hadn't found a good Mexican restaurant since I had moved here. I'd been to Las Palmas (on Franklin/8th ave. so.) several times, and hated it. Didn't know what everyone was raving about. (Maybe I ate at the wrong location!) When I found this place, it was a pleasant surprise. They've got good sangria (although they serve it with ice, which is weird to me), and two vegetarian options that I'd never seen at your average mexican restaurant before. One is the spinach burrito dinner, which comes with beans and rice. I had never even heard of a spinach burrito before, but man, do they have it perfected! It's really good. My other favorite meal there is the Rancheros Rolls (I think that's what they're called), it's spinach, lettuce, beans, tomato rolled in a sort of little wrapping, and cut into four pieces. They serve it with ranch, and I think you get a side with it, but I never have enough room left for the side. Also, their chips and salsa are some of the best I've had. Queso dip is great too. They are a little overpriced (imho), but it doesn't seem to be anymore expensive than any other mexican place. Most of the time, the staff is polite, I've had a few odd experiences, but overall, good.
