The good reviews must have gone to their heads. I walked in and sat down despite of the sign that said they needed a breakfast cook and the scowl I got from the women working at the front. After I saw another man go up and order I guessed I was supposed to find a menu and order myself. I finally finding a menu I discovered breakfast stopped at 2 (5 minutes late) and there was nothing I could eat there that wasn't covered in grease. I'm from Texas and usually like those "funky" places as long as the food is good but I wasn't impressed with what was coming out of the kitchen. Don't waste your time. Walk across the street to the Maple Street Grill. I had a delicious turkey sandwich on pretzel bread (apples, turkey, Swiss cheese and field greens) sweet potato on the side all for only 7.99.

For a small diner on Main Street I was expecting more out of the food & atmosphere. The decor is very old, the booths were worn in & every time the person behind you in the next booth moved, you did too. The food was not great. I had the country ham (dry & super salty), the mashed potatoes (tasted fake-probably the worst I've had), and the green beans (too much onion). On another note the service was great & the waitress was very nice, I ate my food because I didn't want to make her feel bad. I'm not sure how the breakfast is but I probably won't be returning.

Country meat and three. You will get looks as to why someone under the age of 75 is in here, but good stuff.

Beautiful! Everything about this place was great. The people were beautiful. It's so warm and cozy in there, not literally, it's actually pretty chilly but the atmosphere is so warm and inviting. Melissa was our waitress and she was great. She was busy, yet it did not affect her performance. I love how the staff is friendly and jokes around with one another in front of you. Melissa knew a lot of people by name. I see why customers keep coming back.

The City Cafe is an establishment in Murfreesboro, and it's a great place to get breakfast or lunch after shopping in the downtown square area. I love breakfast and was thrilled to find they serve it until 1pm. I ordered scrambled eggs, toast, grits and home fries. The scrambled eggs were cooked perfectly, and the toast was that diner toast I can never seem to replicate at home. Nothing fancy, just buttery deliciousness. The grits were okay - a little watery, but I've had them before from the City Cafe when they were better, so it was just an off day for grits. The home fries were a surprise, as they were more like homemade potato chips cut a little thicker. They were good, just not what I was expecting. Our service is always extremely friendly and attentive, and this weekend was no exception.

Good food, friendly staff! I usually have the breakfast.... Their country ham rocks, but today's choice of a burger was good too. Fries were PERFECT! And now.... Fudge pie! Update: pie and cake were AMAZING! If I didn't already love going here, I go back back just for the dessert! It's very difficult to find good, decently priced dessert in the Metro area, they are knocking it out of the park! Cake was fresh, moist and delish- even after I took it home into a to go box! Fridge pie was gooey and like chocolate heaven. Give them a try, you won't be disappointed.

It's seat yourself as soon as you get in. It was busy as of 0800 on a Saturday so that was a good sign. The breakfast menu is pretty funny to read. The breakfast was good. The only complaint I have was that the gravy was pretty bland. Other than that everything was perfect. Oh and I wasn't used to Murfreesboro city water. So the glass of water was undrinkable. I did drink the shit out of the coffee though.

A smashing meet and three, clean, comfy and packed. Chickin and dumplins, corn, crispy fried livers and lashings of gravy, what more could a girl want at noontime.....oh methinks some chess pie. The service here is one of the best in TN I have ever had, so chipper and fun it hurts.

Always great food fast. New ownership has swapped up the menu some but not in a bad way. Food was super hot bacon crispy but not overly so. Same atmosphere as before. Will go back time and time again.

Nice little quaint cafe on the square. Friendly service and nice breakfast menu

We ate at City Cafe for lunch. My large family was very satisfied with our meal. The restaurant has good comfort food well prepared. This is more of a diner type place than a restaurant but we will definitely be back next time we are in town...

Have always enjoyed coming here a few times a month for the past couple of years on Saturday for breakfast. Food and service has always been nothing short of amazing. Come in this morning. New owners new menu. Server comes to our table takes our drink order. We told her we were ready to order and server rudely said "no I am not ready..I'm not ready for you". REALLY?? We left and will not be back!

City Cafe has been a tradition in the 'Boro forever. It has a lot of nostalgia and old school charm. I really like their breakfast and lunch. (Especially the breakfast). It's not a new, shiny, clean looking place. It doesn't claim to be those things. Go there if you like to go to local spots that are specific to a town. Make sure you look at the different photos on the walls. It's like a little Murfreesboro history lesson.

Great breakfast! The best home fries! Great service!

I'd had high hopes for this local cafe and went by for breakfast. The aesthetics of the place are great.. it's truly an old fashioned kind of joint. The breakfast menu is filled with character. The service was friendly and quick. But when my food came, it wasn't that great. The grits weren't up to par; the sausage was overcooked and dry. It's not terrible.. just not a great meal. I may give them another chance for lunch someday, but I'll not be back for breakfast.

I was a little bummed when I walked into City Cafe. For some reason, I had envisioned an old soda shop where we would have BLT's and strawberry milkshakes. Not at all. I should have read the Yelp reviews first, but it was more of a "turn right here and let's try this place" kind of day. City Cafe is not a soda shop, it's a southern-style meat and three. I ordered Monday's special which is barbecue chicken, black eyed peas, okra and corn bread. The chicken was so tender, it fell off the bone. Although the only thing that made it barbecue was the sauce that they dumped over the top. I scrapped most of that off. The black eyed peas and okra were to be expected, but the cornbread you could tell was made from scratch. You definitely get the feeling of eating in "grandma's kitchen" at City Cafe. Even though the service was friendly, the food was just okay. It left me confused on why everyone talks about this place so much. I think it's just nostalgia. I will probably not return soon.

If you are looking to step back in time, this is the place to go. You walk in and are immediatley greeted by the owner running the register at the door. You will seat yourself and you might as well plan to join in a conversation that is going on somewhere in the building because you can't help but get pulled in by the regulars. This isn't a place full of college students or screaming kids. It is a place full of farms, lawyers, judges, and all of the real people from Murfreesboro that just want to get together and discuss local politics are local gossip whichever comes to mind. The food is great and you couldn't ask for better service.

Nice old restaurant setting but that is about all I can say good. By looking at Yelp I was conflicted on trying it out and I wish I hadn't. I can say that I left with food in my belly but after the egg shell in the omelet and having to wait for a refill with a bad feeling in my mouth was very upsetting. Service was sub par though she had a nice attitude when she was around. The pancake was huge and the biscuits were soft and fluffy but I have a funny feeling that everything was more instant in nature than home cookin. Lastly I have never been to a restaurant that did not serve hash browns with the omelets they offered grits or oatmeal a little strange I think and very expensive for what you get. I rather go to Waffle House.

I understand it's a Murfreesboro tradition.. But I don't get it. I really don't think it's 5-Star worthy.

The reviewer who described City Cafe as a "step back in time" is exactly right. I had breakfast here with my mom right after I moved here from Chicago; it's the kind of place that made me feel like I was "home." The breakfast menu is super cute - lots of little witty things really give this place its personality. Be sure to check out the coffee mugs - so cute you want to put one in your purse until you read the fine print "this mug was stolen from the City Cafe." Of course, you can buy one at the front counter!

I felt like I was walking i the movie Forrest Gump when I visited this cafe with the cute little benches and rocking chairs outside of the shops. The atmosphere of the resturant is incredible, warm and inviting. The waitress was absolutly the kindest person I have ever encountered. I sat at a booth alone only to observe the sheriff and a very old farmer along with 4 other men sit together and eat their eggs and bacon. The waitress served the regulars a slice of a tomato that she had picked from her garden that morning. It was wonderful. The food isn't anything to write home about. Fairly standard but perfect cafe food and exactly what I expected. I am anxiously waiting my return to this resturant here in the next couple weeks.

I am not from the South and find the cuisine here very different from what I'm used to. City cafe does not serve breakfast all day. I asked if an egg could be added to a bacon sandwich and they agreed. Only they still put may on the sandwich (next to the egg) - not ok in my book. Whether mayo is standard fair on a BLT is debatable - a server should ask, if it's not specified on the menu. The bacon was burnt. We ordered peach cobbler for dessert. I was looking forward to it as this is the south and cobbler is near a religious experience here. To my distaste the peaches were canned and not fresh. I would go back during breakfast hours and give it a shot - probably not for lunch or dinner.

Was in town interviewing for a job, and wanted to get a "feel" for the community. This was a cute "local" joint, and the atmosphere was warm and welcoming. However, the food was terrible. I ordered "fruit salad" envisioning cut up watermelon or something seasonal, only to get the canned version of chunks of peaches and pineapple in heavy syrup. Instant potatoes. Canned peas. My husband's french fries were the frozen Oreda kind. The only thing "homemade" was the rolls which were very good. But overall, if I wanted canned food I could get that from my pantry, I was hoping for homecooked southern meal and this definitely wasn't it.
