Another great breakfast find. The food here is just absolutely awesome. It says country breakfast and that's exactly what it is the smoke sausage patties were the best. The blackberry jam was homemade and the sugar cured ham topped it off. Highly recommended for sure.

y'all. no. just no. the fried pickles are pretty good, and their little store when you first walk in is full of nostalgia purchases. but, it ends there. we arrived here (it's been a few weeks) on our way back to nashville from chattanooga; and i told the Mr. "no. no. mc. donalds." he didn't listen to me. he should have. he only gave this place one star. it's his own fault... i get a place being "laid-back"(as the owner has replied to the negative reviews), but that is not synonymous with "it's okay to have a constantly empty glass and have to walk up and ask for a refill yourself". the lady waiting on our table was sweet enough, but, this is not what she should be doing. forgotten orders, i actually think we were forgotten, and empty classes. she had plenty of time to socialize with the other staff though, at the expense of her tables' needs. also, as we were walking out, and paying for our meal, i'm pretty sure the owner, manager, whoever was making fun of her to us and the other employees. tacky. i still remind my husband of "that time you should have listened to me and gone to mc donald's over the smokehouse". 2 stars instead of 1 because i did like the fried pickles.

Great catfish and lots of dipping sauces made in house. I appreciated the large salad bar because it's hard to find veggies on the road. The attached store was quaint with great fudge. I'm glad I didn't have a chance to read the bad reviews on this place before I tried it for myself. To be fair, I can see why others might have found their buffet over cooked. I must have gotten the best stuff on the menu because I loved it and want to visit again.

We actually had a fantastic meal here. The atmosphere is very different but the food was southern and fantastic. I had a grilled ham, bacon and cheese and it was amazing. Two of our people had buffet. It was also delicious. Vegetable beef soup/Stew was to die for. We always try and find eateries off the beaten path and not fast food or chains. We would definitely eat again on our travels.

Total random stop traveling to Missouri for us based on their Yelp reviews. The BBQ was very good but the lodge and store would be a treat for anyone who likes the country life.

We had a really good breakfast here. The waitress was very helpful in giving our children some biscuits while we waited on our food. The kids loved playing with the cat and toys in the huge shop. We ended up taking some jams home with us. You get a 10% discount if you stay in the connected Best Western.

We stopped at Jim Oliver's Smoke House Restaurant for lunch today, as we were passing through during a Sunday drive around the TN countryside. I liked the large gift shop, we've never seen such a wide variety and selection of jams, sauces, and other novelty food items. A lot like a Cracker Barrel, but much more extensive. On to the restaurant -- we were seated right away, the tables & chairs were very "rustic", nice decor, but my legs did bump into the smallish table a few times, and it shook quite a bit. We both ordered the lunch buffet -- as Southern Buffets go, I'd say this is one of the better ones. Both the fried chicken and the smoke chicken were very tasty. Mac & Cheese was EXCELLENT ! Pulled Pork was good, a large selection of sauces were available and I did appreciate that. Mashed potatoes were also very good, overall, we were very happy with the buffet (my fiancee did bite into some grit in her kale). I only wished they had offered some fried catfish though, maybe they do on other days, not sure, but it was not a choice for us today. OK, normally I would consider Jim Oliver's Smoke House Restaurant to be a solid 4 star rating. So why 3 stars ? One word: SERVICE. Our waitress, Ash E, left a lot to be desired. Beyond being inattentive (forgetting our silverware until we came back from the buffet, making us ask for re-fills on our drinks, only giving us one straw for 2 drinks, passing by the table several times and not clearing our plates, and not asking how we were doing even once), she was strolling through the dining room snapping and popping her chewing gum. Extremely unprofessional. The cashier at the exit wasn't too friendly either. Seemed like she had the attitude that she was doing us a favor by taking our money. Hey, customer service does matter to me, a smile and "have a nice day" goes a long way with me. For all the delicious Southern food we did consume today at Jim Oliver's Smoke House, we felt the warm, friendly Southern attitude was seriously lacking. We did order two fried pies to go, mine was coconut creme, hers was peach. Honestly, we thought they were just "ok", they looked a lot better then they tasted. The filling in my coconut creme tasted kinda of "funky".

The Smokehouse is a bonafide good ole Southern soul food haven tucked in the rolling foothills of Monteagle near Sewanee. It's a must stop place for anyone yearning for cornbread, fried chicken, turnip greens and all things Southern. The Sunday lunch capped with homemade bread pudding will sho nuff make you want to slap yo mamma and think you've arrived at the pearly gates of soul food heaven! 5-stars for sure! We are sure to make a stop every time we cross the hills between Nashville and Chattanooga!

Great southern food and awesome atmosphere. The ribs were so look good. The meat falls right off the Bone. Wanted to try the fried pie but was just too stuffed.

So, I have not had the displeasure of giving a location 1 star to often, and it disappoints me to do so today but I must speak my mind about our service and meal. After having passed the many signs leading up to the exit that the smoke house is off of, for the many years we have traveled from Nashville to Chattanooga and back, we finally stopped by for dinner Sunday night on the way home from an event and prior to my stores Christmas Party. As we entered the establishment, I was immediately excited by all the different jams and spices and sauces that lined the shelves and stated to my wife that after we ate we would be "raiding this place" for a bunch of stuff that would stock up our pantry. Unfortunately we then sat down to eat... The waitress came to the table and took my wife's order of fried pickles as an appetizer while she waited for me to come to the table, and then we sat for about 5 minutes before she "remembered" and came back to us. I got the buffet and my wife got pulled pork sandwich. My wife asked the waitress if she could get mac n cheese and the waitress said, sure, ill just get it from the buffet for you. I went and started on the buffet, and got some fried chicken and baked chicken I watched them take out a few minutes earlier, and my wife's meal came very fast. As I started to eat and was immediately assaulted by the dryness of the chicken, as well as the overbearing feeling that the chicken was old. When I went to get a drink, I also realized that it hadn't even come yet. My wife had to actually get up to get it from our waitress, who then told us "sorry, I always get absent minded when im taking a phone order". Now, after my wife had finished her water and never got a refill, she got up and walked over to ask for some water, and the lady was standing their talking to another waitress and was unaware of her as she was so engrossed in her conversation with the other waitress. Finally, after turning and seeing my wife, she stated she was "just about to get her some water". After my second plate of food was just as bad as the first, I started to feel some pains and we decided to stop where we were on this meal and just leave. We then sat their again until we got our bill and go up to pay. As we left, my wife and I were no longer interested in getting anything, we just wanted to pay our bill. When we got to the counter, we witnessed a gentleman counting money on the counter and another person behind the counter was telling the girl at the register she was counting it wrong, and when she finally got the right money to him and he left, the gentleman behind the counter made a snide remark to the girl about how someone "thinks they should get a share of the tip, all she did was take the call" and then looked at us as we paid our bill and asked us if we could believe it. No, no I cant believe it. I also cant believe anyone would think it even close to appropriate to have that discussion with a customer about an employee. I also cant believe I wasn't able to make my companies Christmas party as I was ill the rest of the night. I understand that this establishment is "laid back" as I have read on the many replies below but I as really hoping this would be the new destination top mid way between our trips instead of what we got, which was poor service, poor food, and an embarrassing situation at the cost of a fellow employee their.

Tony and I went hiking in Tracy City, Tn and afterwards we found lunch at this wonderful restaurant. I was attracted by the ROADSIDE attraction style of the restaurant..reminding me of restaurants my parents used to stop us at as children. It has a huge gift shop to look through. They sell their BBQ sauces, rubs/spices, Jelly's and Jams..sort of expensive but homemade..They also have gift ideas, baskets made up and homemade fudge. The restaurant is sort large. Had plenty of room, mismatched tables and chairs part of the decor that way. Our waitress was very fast and friendly. They also offer a hot/cold buffet style bar with salad, soup and entree and side items but is FLU season..so not worth the risk..we ordered off the menu. We both took the Open face Roast Beef sandwich served with mashed potatoes and gravy on bread with a side..we chose green beans.. I ordered the tea and he ordered a cold budweiser in a bottle with a cold mug... Pricing was average..we paid $31 with taxes and 15% tip we would go back again..

Very cute and unique atmosphere. Breakfast buffet was not perfect but I sure didn't leave there hungry! Staff was very nice. I'm glad we gave this place a chance!

In reponse to Mr. Oliver's reply to my review I would like to first say that yes, I stated the food was "fine". That pertains to the food that I personally chose to eat off the buffet, which was mostly your pulled pork (it was the best thing there). However I was not the only person dining and my husband tried a much bigger variety of food off the buffet. The thing that bothered me most about my visit to this place and what prompted me to write my original review was 1.) I was lied to about the availability of a manager on duty when in fact the owner was in plain sight and 2.) I felt like my complaint was more of a burden to him than it had to be. Attitude is everything in customer service. I clearly stated that he covered the cost of the meal, which at that point was to be expected of any reputable establishment. No one should have to pay for an experience like that, and it is one of the few times in my life that I have actually been completely disappointed with an establishment. This is my personal experience, and some people might eat there and love it. Everyone has "off" days from time to time, and I understand that but no one likes being ignored at a place they CHOSE to patronize, no matter what the circumstances causing it may be. Regardless of who my server actually was, there were two of them serving maybe three tables total at that time. When you see that no one is waiting on a table, you either say something to the waitress who should be doing it, or you do it yourself if you care anything about your job and the reputation of the establishment you represent. Mr. Oliver also stated, "We have many regular customers so that must say something about our service," and I don't doubt there probably are people who eat there regularly, but I seriously wonder just how much of your revenue comes from travelers who don't have a clue about the place. That's why Yelp is useful. I stand with my original review on Jim Oliver's Smokehouse; he did the right thing by covering the meal, but there is better food and service to be had for the same price elsewhere.

I had just left a large music festival and this was some of the first real food I had seen in a week, so maybe I was a little over anxious to eat. As you walk in, the fudge looks awesome, I had a sample and it was good, but not great. I wandered through the general store to find many others that had come from the festival. As I did this, I passed by the buffet. Quite a lot to choose from, pretty much your staple southern fare. I didn't know specifically what I wanted, and I knew I was hungry, so I didn't even bother to look at the menu and just went straight for the buffet. There was pork, mac and cheese, greens, salad bar, cobblers, all that the heart could desire. All that said though, nothing was really "all that". It was edible and a good deal for the money, but just not quite there. I visited the general store a little more on the way out and happened to find a hall of fame/memorial for some country group that I never heard of. Although, extremely random, it was interesting. Bottom line is, if you are here already, go ahead, stop in and see what its all about, if not, don't waste your time.

Like a Cracker Barrel but a million times better! They had a buffet of normal, all day food that two in our party had. I tried some chipped pork from the buffet and it was fantastic! The rest of us ordered some kind of breakfast off the menu. We were warned that the kitchen was backed up a bit if you ordered off the menu...expected on a Sunday brunch time visit on Father's Day. It did take a while, but not like get so hungry in the meantime that you want to gnaw your own arm off for sustenance. The food was greasy diner perfection! My eggs were perfectly overeasy. The bacon was the best thing ever (as it always is). The biscuits were hot and fresh out of the oven and delicious. The big draw and highlight of my meal (because I am still a child on the inside) was the veritable plethora of bottled flavored sodas. I indulged in a grape Crush and a blue bubblegum Jones Soda that seriously hit the spot. And on the way out we all grabbed some rock candy goodness for the car ride. It was exactly what I expected it to be and it was exactly what we all wanted and needed!

Lunch Buffett... Terrible. Bland, no flavor, cold chicken. Why did I do this. Those tricky signs on the highway get to me sometimes.

My family and I decided to stop and eat breakfast here on our way to Chattanooga. It had been nearly twenty years since the last time I had been there and now I remember why. We walked in and the hostess sat us in a corner where apparently we were forgotten. We sat there for 30 mins and never had anyone acknowledge our presence must less take our drink or food order, so we walked out. I will definitely not be back.

Fun country store for southern novelties. Go for the music on Friday and Saturday nights not really the food. As far as food options in Monteagle, it is a decent option.

I ate here for the first time today, and I have to say I won't be returning. I like the general store atmosphere of this place, but it didn't seem very clean and the food wasn't up to par. I had the pulled pork sandwich, which was okay but dry and too expensive for the small amount of barbecue included. The only sides available were fried, except the coleslaw that was included with all the meals. Towards the end of my sandwich I bit into a piece of bone that was mixed in with the pork. I understand that kind of thing can happen, but does not enhance the dining experience. But the final straw for me was the cockroach that crawled out of the barbecue sauce holder on our table and ran across the table at the end of the meal. That was too much. If there are cockroaches on the tables, I don't want to see the kitchen.

We had heard comments about the Smoke House Restaurant for years. Recently, we finally took the time to turn off the interstate to try the food. Both my wife and I were disappointed greatly in the selection and quality of food!! My wife chose the vegetable dinner from the buffet, and I went for the whole buffet experience. There were only two choices of meat. I chose the pulled BBQ (the other was a dried-out pasta dish) and found it to be much less than good! Both us were disappointed in the quality of preparation of the vegetables. PLUS - they were totally were out of the much heralded cracklin' corn bread - and inidicated that the previous shift had not left the materials to make any more!! They did bring us some leftover cornbread muffins. The dessert on the buffet was bread pudding, but there was only one serving remaining, and it looked like it had been sitting for quite a while. We opted to split a HUGE, good looking fried pie with ice cream for dessert, and the pie was so greasy that we left much of it in the bowl. Next time, we will opt for Cracker Barrell!!! Although CB doesn't have a buffet, the food almost always is much better, along with a much better selection of dishes!!!

We stayed a couple of days in Monteagle TN, for the cornbread festival... Went to the smokehouse for 2 dinners.... I promised my readers, that I would not sugar coat my reviews, so here goes... Part #1 The place gets 5 stars The store / museum is pretty cool and has lots of antiques & stuff to look at.. Fri & sat. Nights live music..we did both nights ..very nice..... The hospitality from the smokehouse 'smoker'. Was 1st rate, and the gentleman couldn't have made feel more welcome ..he showed us smoking and rib cooking, and we had pictures taken with him...he even helped my wife to help pick out a cowboy hat for daughter... Being a new englander... I am sold on southern hospitality.. Part#2 The food, was ok, But after seeing all the production of the meats and smoking... I am surprised it wasn't better ( sorry smokehouse ). I'll guess that the large scale production kind of thins out the flavors.. Overall. A good experience, especially on a music night..if you are in the area..

The waitress was really nice and the food was good. I had the beef brisket dinner with turnip greens. The beef vegetable soup mixed with corn bread hit the spot on this cold afternoon.

Had the beef brisket and it was excellent! The sides were...OK. Did not risk the buffet but looked good, and the set up was clean. Our service was very good, the server did not miss a step. Definitely going back!

The staff is rude, the place is DIRTY, and the food mediocre. Had to return three sets of silverware because food was on each of them. The ketchup bottle was sticky from other people's hands. The tables were dirty. It's disgusting. Avoid at all costs. Bad.

  • Rick A.

Food was marginal...Vinegar put in several items..mashed potatoes, string beans and even the pulled pork. Unbelievable taste...thought it had gone bad at first but my wife said it was vinegar in those items. Table next to us man had pulled pork and made a disgusting sound and asked his wife to try the pork...he asked what the horrible taste was and wife said vinegar....must admit they did have the best bread pudding We have ever had.

One of the top 10 worst dining experiences of my life. Chicken was more like shoe leather than food. Service was horrendous. Literally had to find my waitress for every single thing I wanted. Vegetables were terrible. I guess maybe the dog bones at the register with the most edible things in the whole place. I wish it was possible to give negative stars
