We were traveling to meet our daughter and selected exit 134 on I24 as the meeting place. Having time to burn until she arrived, my wife and drove around looking at the sights!!! And we found High Point!!! What a Wonderful place to have dinner!!! And in such an unexpected location. The Staff was great and the selections wonderful!! We will be back as we completely enjoyed our dinning experience!!!

Great service, classy atmosphere, and delicious food! I live in CA and while visiting relatives we stopped here for dinner, so glad that we did! My filet mignon with the grilled shrimp was amazing! Next time I visit TN I must return! Also the grilled pound cake dessert is a must try!

We eat here at least once a month. Every meal is excellent. A little gem on the mountain.

Yeah, I hand out the 5 stars pretty sparingly. Everything was pretty top notch at High Point. For a small town, the place sure was busy. Food and service was great. Wife got Chicken Caprese, is chose Madiera Chicken. I tried both and my wife asked which was better. They were very different flavors, but both were excellent. We'd talked about going to this restaurant before but never seemed to make it. We'll definitely be going back.

A good selection of items on menu from steak to duck to fish. Opted for the steak as did my husband. Both ordered medium and both came well done. Not even a little pink in middle. My ribeye had three strips of grissle (?spell) through it. Poor cut. Service was okay. A little sloppy.. Waitress handed all four of our menus to one person to pass around. Upon first getting to restaurant, I went to restroom. I overheard a young lady sigh and say "Let's get this over with. I need to win the lottery so I don't have to come back to this place." I smiled at her but imagine my surprise when she was our waitress. May return for another try?...

This place could be soooo much better. The Rainbow Trout was cooked perfectly. It needed no heavy sauce they put on it. Salads fresh and good. Rolls ok. Lobster bisque was way too salty. So were the heirloom potatoes. Too much salt. Plus the service was slow slow slow. And only one bathroom for a place that serves over 60. So wrong. In any state. Plus no women's or men's bathroom. Just unisex. Really.????i I do not care what historical list your on. Update the bathrooms & get rid of the sou chef. Salt is killing. We were not offered straws but everyone else had them. Even passing thru you want to entice us to come back. We won't.

Incredible meal in a historic home! We went here for my husband's birthday and it did not disappoint! From the fresh bread to the grilled pound cake dessert...everything was top notch! I got the New Orleans tuna and my husband got the Blackberry Duck. Both were cooked perfectly and the side of cheddar grits were a great match! Stop in if you're between Nashville & Chattanooga...this place is worth it! The patio is also a great spot to sit!

Ate here twice recently with colleagues and was happier than previously. The Cesar salad was refreshing an I enjoyed the fillet mignon, although the sauce was too heavy for my taste. Tried the steak Dianne as well but again didn't care for the sauce. Had the creme brûlée for desert and it was very nice, but definitely large enough for two to share.

High Point is an excellent place for special occasions! The seared tuna is delicious and the Maker's Mark steak are two of our favorites, however, I've had everything on the menu and never had a bad meal! The only criticism I have is that the servers could dress up a bit more and the decor could be more lavish. The theme is roaring 20's and it is very modestly decorated. Details are important in a fine dining experience. The foods is great it it just needs a little fine tuning.

Had a business dinner there last June 26th, 2014. It was one of the best meals that we've had. The food was fresh and well prepared. I had the Bruised and Blue Filet Mignon with Chef's vegetables and a Loaded Bake Potato. It was just fantastic. Tammy was our server, with 13 years experience there she was forthright with her suggestions and answering questions. When one of my colleagues ask about the scallops she said "they just came in Tuesday and they are on the small side.". It's always refreshing when someone is straight up honest with you. It would have been very easy to have pushed those scallops on him just to get them out of the kitchen. Since it was a week day we were seated immediately, but I understand it can get very busy during certain seasons. Anyway, great food, great service and wonderful ambience with lots of history and folklore with the Al Capone connection. I highly recommend this for special occasions.

I can't imagine why anybody would give this place anything but five stars. It has it all...superb food, ambience, service, and history. We were visiting middle Tennessee, from Los Angeles and were taken there by local relatives. Los Angeles restaurants rival any fine restaurants in the world, and High Point rivals the best in Los Angeles!

We've given this place three tries hoping it would improve & just don't understand what others see here. The service & food were B- (to be generous), ambiance was C-, & prices were steep compared to a nearby elegant restaurant in Sewanee.

High Point is a great place to eat with a group. We had reservations for 9 and I was able to hear everyone at the table, which is definitely a plus. I would have given more stars but being a vegetarian, there was very few options to choose. What I did select was good. I got the "personalized vegetable selection." I opted for the blackberry winter salad, which was excellent! I requested the cheese and the dressing on the side, and the staff were very accommodating in that regard. I also selected the asparagus (hold the Hollandaise). That was most excellent. The fried heirloom potatoes were much too salty for my taste, but otherwise very good. The other guests at our table seemed to enjoy everything in front of them. The wait staff were excellent. Our server was friendly, accommodating, attentive, and just a sweet person! Loved her! I'd recommend this place to my friends! Just wish they would have more veg selections! (Think VEGAN)

My husband and I ate dinner there last Wednesday, June 4th. It was one of the best meals that we had eaten in a long time. Our last pricey meal was for our 37th anniversary. We thought that was a good meal till we ate at High Point. both meals were about the same in price, close to $150 which included tip. One of those special meals. We have told all our friends about the place and cannot wait to go back for another special meal. I just want to say thank you to the chief and waitress for doing such a great job. I had the Makers Mark steak which was awesome and my husband had the Capone Seafood which was really good. But not as good as mine. My husband had the house salad with the mustard vinegarette and raved about it, I had the lobster bisque which was really good. We both believe the appetizer was probably one of the best we have ever had -the Crabcakes - Wonderful! See you soon!

My husband and I recently dined at High Point for our 10 year anniversary. He had ate here before with a company trip. Since We have recently relocated to NW Georgia it was a short drive for us and he really wanted to dine here and praised how great the food was. We did not order any Hors D' oeuvres. We are not very adventurous with taste so there wasn't anything to appealing to us. I ordered the Queen New York Strip. My husband had the King's New York Strip. Both were served with choice of salad or soup and a side dish. I choose the caesar salad and my husband enjoyed the house salad. My caesar salad was probably the best caesar salad I have ever had. I didn't try my husbands salad but he enjoyed it and is a very picky eater. Our steaks were cooked perfectly. My husband orders his well done and most restaurant wouldn't suggest or guarantee a well done steak, but it came out perfect! The seasoned butter the put on top of the steak truly tops it off. I am not one for a lot of add on's to a steak. I believe a quality cut of meat cooked perfect doesn't need any add on's. But it bought so much flavor to the steak. My side was a baked potato which I cannot review on since I only focused on eating my steak. I didn't go there for a baked potato. But since the quality of everything else was so great I am sure the potato was just as good. My husband tried the fried herliom potatoes and loved them. We did enjoy desert and two cocktails. I was really looking forward to cheesecake but that wasn't a desert they had. I settled for the key line pie and it was delicious and very flavorful. You could tell it was fresh. My husband enjoyed the chocolate lava cake which he bragged about the entire car ride there. The restaurant doesn't have milk which is almost necessary to finish the chocolate cake. I had one bite and it was most moist rich cake I had ever had. Our cocktails were great. The waitress was new but did a wonderful job. You could tell she was trained, and took her time with every table giving each customer personal attention. We asked the hostess (which I think she was more the floor supervisor) to take our picture outside before we left. She was happy to help us and the restaurant was busy and we hated asking but I really wanted a picture. Cannot wait to visit again!

Amazing! The pairings of blackberry and duck were delicious, the seafood pasta with Alfredo sauce my husband had delicious, the berry salad delicious, and the sweet potato curried soup delicious! We topped it off with the Bananas Foster- delicious! The food was so good that we ate more than we should, and you could have rolled us out at the end!

Good food and friendly waitresses. Over priced for the level of cuisine they deliver. The ambiance of the historic house is worth one meal there.

Absolutely delicious from the appetizers, salads, new York strip to dessert. A must eat restaurant in this sleepy little town. Atmosphere was wonderful. Waitress was a little slow but overall great experience!

It is truly an experience to dine here, unfortunately let down by very average food. 3 stars for the food, 5 stars for the location! 1) The building is legendary. This used to be Al Capones mountain hideout. The waitress told me there are escape hatches in the roof and underground tunnels and that Capone and Dilinger had several escapades in this property. 2) A really nice venue. Wood floors, classic 1930s decor, very tasteful. It is a nice venue for either a power dinner with a local Tennessee mafioso, or a romantic date with your wife. 3) Great service. The staff are really nice and service is really attentive as it should be in Tennessee. 4) The disappointment is the food. While the ingredients are high quality, the recipes are not great. The fried green tomatoes were the most tasteless I have ever had. The steak diane sauce tasted odd - so odd that the steak Diane at even Cheesecake factory would be considered better. The lobster bisque was excellent. This was the consensus of 3 of the 4 diners in our group. One of us also tried the fish and found that to be average as well They should upgrade the menu since the property is too good to be serving average meals.

i almost skipped the High Point because the negative reviews about too big a menu struck a cord. Bottom line: they're wrong! My wife and i had a fabulous experience at the High Point. The building is fascinating and well updated to its modern use. Despite the Al Capone connection, there is only a very subtle attempt to capitalize on this history. This is no tourist trap; its obviously run by committed restauranteurs whose goal is to provide a fine dining experience, a real surprise in a town that on the surface appears to be the typical small southern motel strip that masquerades as a town. Of course that's not true of Monteagle which sports the sophisticated rusticity of the Monteagle Assembly and is down the road from Sewanee, one of the best small liberal arts colleges in the U. S. Appearances can be deceiving, but not in the case of the High Point, where the food was every bit as extraordinary as the setting. Since the night was warm we chose to sit outside on the patio, where we were serenaded by very small but very loud frogs: great fun indeed. Service was attentive and friendly, but not obtrusive, it seemed like our waitress was always there at just the right moment. Our meals started with a Chattanooga Whiskey Sour, which was one of the best I have ever tasted. We choose the Duck Soup special and a Blueberry Summer Salad, both of which were exquisite. For our main course we split a Maker's Mark Steak, which would have been too much food if we hadn't split it. The main course came with a choice of vegetables: we chose the smashed potatoes which were fabulous and the medley of fried potatoes which were interesting and tasty as well. Oh and don't forget the rolls, which were so good that we secreted one away for breakfast. One very thoughtful feature of the menu was the ability to substitute the full spectrum of soups, salads and vegetables for the recommended choices at no extra charge. Overall this was a great experience and by itself would justify the 300 miles we drove to get to Monteagle. If you haven't been to the South Cumberland area don't fail to head out on some of the fantastic trails in the area, such as Fiery Gizzard or Stone Door and don't miss the Dutch Maid Bakery in Tracy City. A few miles up an down the beautiful hills and you'll work up a great appetite to enjoy the High Point that much more.

While the food was in general good, particularly the salads (BLT bib fantastic), the atmosphere left so much to be desired that we left disappointed. The building is gorgeous and the downstairs rooms are decently finished. However we were put upstairs where barely a moment's thought seemed to have been put to ambience. Overlapping burgundy vinyl tablecloths, salt and pepper shakers straight from the grocery aisle, canvas wine bottle artwork that looked like it came from TJ Maxx and a light fixture from Home Depot. In a building with such history, the addition of some thoughtful lighting (fixtures reminiscent of the 1930s, candles in crystal like votives), white tablecloths, and simple silver-plate table accessories would have made a world of difference. For a building with so much apparent history, there was not a single historical mention on the menu. We would have loved to sit outside but on the night we visited the tacky plastic patio furniture was stacked or leaned against the tables. Service was competent but more suitable for a diner than a fancy $30+ entree establishment. Green beans on the other hand were fantastic and value for kids meal ($10 for a full size salad and plate of pasta) was great. NY Strip was tasty, steak Diane over seasoned and swimming in sauce that disguised the flavor of the meat.

What a beautiful location. This restaurant was supposedly a hideout of Al Capone. The history helps make the ambiance of this amazing looking place. The portions are enormous. I started with the french onion soup which was mediocre. The rosemary pork was well cooked and was tasty. I also choose the potato medley which was crispy and salty. Which was a great compliment to the pork. I was so full half way through that there was no room for dessert, maybe next time. If you are ever in the area and looking for a beautiful location with tasty food give Al Capone's hideout a try.

Birthday road trip this week, our second visit. Old brick 1930's mansion built by Al Capone for one of his girlfriends (now that's my kind of man), the highest point between Miami and Chicago. Dark, atmospheric, huge outdoor area for summer, cozy fire for winter indoors. Dirty martinis and wine seem to be the libation of choice here...extra dirty of course. Fried Lobster tail appetizer was tasty with a light pineapple fluff to dip it in, sesame duck breast appetizer was deliciously rare. My 8oz fillet mignon was Ok but a little too well done, I asked for medium, Pablos 10oz New York /strip which he asked for medium was bloody and rare. The chef's green beans of the day were green bean crack awesome. No room for pudding but all the usual suspects were there. e.g bananas foster. Service was a little hesitant and shy but no matter. Two cocktails each and all this food came to $160. A nice once a year outing and as good as any fiine dining in Nashville (mostly).

Our dinner last night was below expectations. The service was fine, but my sirloin strip steak was served over done (medium vs. medium rare) and was served cold, including the green beans. As such, I had to request that they heat it up a bit and, of course,it came back medium well. Of our four meals, three were served at less than proper temperature - must have sat for too long before served.

I live fifty miles away from this place, but I make a special trip to go down there three or four times each year. Admittedly, it is out of the way for most people, but it's worth the drive. If I had written this a few months ago, I believe I would have given it five stars. However, I went back last week and saw that my favorite item, lamb, had been removed from the menu. A few other dishes had been added, including pasta, and I get that you have to make occasional changes, but I hate that it was something that I really liked that got the boot. I had jambalaya linguine, which I really enjoyed. It was more food than I could eat, and I'm a big guy. It made a nice lunch the next day, though. Beer is bottled (Newcastle Brown went great with that pasta) and they have an extensive wine selection. It's definitely worth a visit if you're in the area, and it's best to make reservations.
