I'm enjoying a creamy & delicious cappuccino from UGLY MUG on their opening day at the free-standing used-to-be Poplar Perk'n. WiFi is speedy, baristas are very friendly. Memphians, drive through or stop in - let's keep local coffee alive in East Memphis!

I am so saddened by the fact that I became a Memphis resident after the closing of the free-standing Ugly Mug Coffee Shop. I would have loved the opportunity to drink this deliciousness within the confines of their store. That being said, every coffee lover needs a staple coffee on hand, in home. Simply because if you are like me you drink it round the clock and cannot get it in your mouth fast enough or- for others- on those days you don't have time or cash to stop and purchase one at your favorite coffee shop. I stumbled upon Ugly Mug at Schnucks on our first grocery excursion in our new home. I was immediately drawn in by the packaging, and was even more excited to see it was too was a Memphian- well at least in the way of coffee. There happened to be a special, and seeing as how I drink at least a pot of coffee a day, we bought 3 bags. It is relatively cheap when we are talking about quality coffee - a little less than the Starbucks bags sitting next to it. When I ground up this Ugly Mug the next morning, I could immediately smell how wonderful it was going to be. When I dumped it into the french press, my eyes confirmed my smells. These beans were so fresh and good the grounds were oily and sticking to the sides- which is always good. Of course, my taste buds confirmed what my eyes and nose had previously stated. Ugly Mug is wonderful. Nutty, rich and strong enough to not add anything extra. I much prefer my coffee black- and I find it hard to get my hands on coffee that doesn't require double the recommended grounds to achieve this taste. I love Ugly Mug and always have a bag or two (or 5) on hand in my home. As an added bonus, the bags are super fun and provide a good read while you wait for the liquidy goodness to brew.

Its pretty fantastic coffee... I try to pickup some up when in memphis or online thru website. I just love the saving grace coffee. I bought enough to share with friends at work when returned from my last walk in memphis. I said to them if you don't drink it let me know & I will take care of it for you. ...

I confess: I buy Starbucks--by the cup and by the bag--way more often than I should. But Memphis does have at least one locally owned fair-trade gourmet coffee roaster it can call its own: Ugly Mug. Flavorwise, I prefer Ugly Mug coffees to their Starbucks counterparts (ever notice that, whetever blend you're drinking, all Starbucks coffees have the same underlying flavor...i.e., the Samuel Adams Syndrome?). And Ugly Mug prices are competitive with bigger name gourmet/specialty brands when you're buying by the bag (which you can do at Memphis-area Schnucks and Kroger stores). Unfortunately, we no longer have a free-standing Ugly Mug Coffee shop, but Ugly Mug coffee can be had by the cup within the confines of other restaurants in town, as well as at the FedEx Forum (where a $3.50 specialty coffee is cheaper than any soft drinks from the regular concession stands) and the Studio on the Square (a chilly movie theatre where a warm beverage is welcome).

Ugly Mug coffee is delicious and I love the fact that it is fair trade and local. I prefer it to Starbucks or any of the other finer coffee brands at the grocery store. It is carried at my local Kroger and at the Wild Oats.
