If you want an authentic treat, then you must try the tamales. This has to be the best deal for tamales in the city. In fact, if you eat them at Fuel and many other places, you are eating these, except HERE they are exceptionally fresh and inspiring. Be sure to brush up on your Espanol. You will need it. The service is not really fast, since you will often be there with many Hispanic people getting these gems for takeout. That is a good idea too, since the dining area is small and uninspiring. They DO have the liter "cane sugar" cokes there too, so grab a couple to take home with a dozen tamales and be a hero for bringing home a fresh, locally made dinner and two old fashioned cokes to go with them for under $20.

AMAZING TAMALES. Please note: all I have ever had here are the tamales & sopas. I have never eaten at the restaurant & I cannot comment on the look of the place because my husband picked up the food. So this review is only for the tamales and sopas. We got 6 each of the 3 kinds of tamales and 2 sopas. The tamales were amazing. Spicy, meaty, & made with love. The salsa that they send with the tamales is super spicy but their Verde sauce is delicious. The longer it sits, the spicier it gets. Same goes for the tamales. But when you re-heat them, keep them in the corn husks. The sopas were super good too. Made with a hand made tortilla, piled high with all the good stuff. Please note, there is a slight language barrier. But as long as you know what Chicken, Pork, and Beef are in Spanish, you'll be fine.

The tacos were surprisingly delicious. As a matter of fact, it is one of the best in Memphis. They had your typical beef, pork, and chicken. Nothing exotic like tripe, tongue, etc... My wife had the beef fajita and it tasted fantastic. Their portions were ample and the prices were very reasonable. I thought I will never find a good tasting tamales in Memphis because Chicago had spoiled me. Low and behold this place makes awesome tamales. They have beef, pork, chicken, and cheese. I am now very happy. Now if they only have an authentic Polish Deli. Anyway I will be back for more tamales and tacos. They also have lunch specials.

Really, really good Tamales. I had one pork, one, beef, and one cheese that had grilled cheese and Jalapenos. The masa was very moist, soft and flavorful. ( Just a guess, but probably made with some lard ) Had a beef taco and it was really great also. It was an off hour and the food was out as fast as I could wash my hands. As another review noted, there is a language barrier if you don't know Spanish but I knew a little and the lady helping knew a little English, so we got by! I will be going back to order more items and update this review. The place is not fancy and does not have a lot of seating.

If you want fresh corn tortillas, still warm, or fresh masa to make tamales then this is a great place to go.

As a first generation American born and raised in Southern California, spoiled by endless authentic Mexican food made fresh daily by my mother, grandmother, aunt or any one of the countless restaurants within walking distance of my home, I turned to Yelp for help on where to eat here in Memphis. To my surprise I came across this hole in the wall place on Summer Ave. Being of Mexican decent myself, I knew what dishes to order that were not on the menu. Did you know they have daily specials made from scratch that are not advertised? Did you know they all work 7 days a week to make, in my opinion, THE best Mexican food north of the border!? Yes the burritos are enormous and great. Yes the tamales are also great. Blah blah blah...typical people....how about trying something unique!? Did you know they make the best carne de borrego, ready to eat? Did you know every Friday they prepare chicharron and carnitas that are made from the hands of Gods and Goddesses? How about the salsas they make? Have you tried those? Have you tried the menudo Saturday morning after having a long Friday night? If you answered No to ANY of the above questions, you my friend are missing out on some of Memphis' best eats!!! Soooooo, La Unica anyone!?

Do you like authentic Mexican food? Do you like getting your food quickly? Do you like getting it for cheap? If your answers are yes, then this is the place for you! This is the best Mexican restaurant I have been to in Memphis and possibly the entire US. It is entirely authentic and absolutely delicious and filling. I have posted pictures of our tacos and also the prices. We also ordered tamales, but ate them too fast to take photos. They are also delicious but we prefer the tacos. What is the best thing about the tacos here? Homemade tortillas. I have only had homemade tortillas when I went to Mexico and this is possibly the only place around Memphis that makes you feel like you stepped out of the South for a little bit and ended up in Mexican paradise. I would give this place 10 stars if I could. It's now my favorite restaurant in Memphis! You can also tell that it's amazing because there were at least 20 people walking in/out with take-out and the restaurant was full of patrons. There is very little seating there so be aware that this might not be great for big groups.

Very authentic....so much so that there was a language barrier. Fortunately, I remembered enough Spanish to order. I had to order the tamales, based on other reviewers, and got the burrito as well. Goodness - the burrito is the size of a premie baby! We're talking something out of Man vs. Food here. Even cut in half, I was a little embarrassed to see something that massive on my plate. (Alongside a tamale, no less!) It was filled with beef, rice, sour cream, fresh avocado - the works - sin lechuga y tomate b/c I don't care for them. I could only eat maybe 1/3 of the half. The real winner was the tamale. Great flavor, good size, meaty, and did I mention only $1.09 each? Will be back, English/Spanish dictionary in hand.

Their carnitas are easily the most authentic I have had in Memphis. Absolutely fantastic!! Can't wait to go back and try other menu items! This place is so much better than Guadalapana #whatever. I am giving the carnitas 5 stars. I can't speak to much else yet.

Great authentic tamales! Placed my order over the phone and were ready within 10 minutes. The chicken Sopes looked awesome too. Will definitely go back! :-)

Just dang good authentic Mexican food. I'm not a big tamales eater but I tried a pork and chicken.... Wow by far some of the best I have ever had. Couple of tacos and a couple of tamales and a Mexican coke awesome. Ps watch out for the watery looking red sauce on the table... I like hot but that one caught me by surprise:)

Wife and I went out for a bit last Saturday. Got hungry and Yelped to see what was around. Four reviews and 4 stars so why not. Do not let the appearance or the location of this place put you off (OK the bars on the windows were a bit strange) Last time I was behind that many bars.....oh well some other time! As others have said there is DEF a language barrier if you do not know any Spanish. I only got as far as Uno Dos Tres Quatro Taco Burrito in High School. In my opinion it made it fun. It was slow and an odd hour and the lady behind the bar was very pleasant. My wife ordered the Quesadilla and I had a cheese tamale, two beef tacos and a pork taco. Half of the wifes quesadilla came home with us for dinner. This thing was huge and stuffed FULL! Wife said it was excellent. When she brought my tacos to the counter she tried to explain to me that they had messed up and that the beef tacos were really something else. I have forgotten the name and could barely pronounce it back to her anyway. Through some fun sign language she assured me it was not internal organ, brain or tongue so i said let me give it a whirl. AMAZING!!! Everything I had was incredible!!! The meat was broken into little crumbles and grilled up perfectly with lots of cilantro garnish. The tamale was a bit dry but the taste was incredible. Someone told me we were there past their "fresh date". I think someone here mentioned a time frame on here for that. Prices were AMAZING as well. All the tacos at just $1.09 each and every thing else was priced equally as low! All in all this is not in my normal neighborhood but if I am ever out that way again and not even feeling hungry I am going back in for sure!!! By the way....the only downside to the place was that it was HOT AS HADES in there with one poor little window unit giving its all to cool the place. Guess it was there way of giving that true experience of Mexico??? Dont miss this place!

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
