My fiancé and I came in Monday night around 8:30pm. We were hesitant to stop by because we knew u closed at 9. But not only did the young lady who greeted us at the door insist we come in, she was super nice and encouraged us to dine in. I'm so glad we did. Our food was hot, fresh, and absolutely delicious! The fried green tomatoes and pork chops were seasoned to perfection. Between the service and the food, I felt I'd been wasting my coins dining elsewhere. Every time we visit memphis, we'll make sure to stop by and happily give you our business. Thank you for being exceptional!!

Let me start off by saying, the food is good( I only ordered take out because the service seemed slow). Well, except that one time I found a small piece of steel wool in my greens a couple of years ago. Sooo, because some friends went to dine in and were impressed, I decided to give them another try. I dined Saturday afternoon for lunch. I had the fish with peas, okra, greens, and fried tomatoes. The green tomatoes were very good. They make a great VIP! The food came out hot. I would have been happy if all of it came out! I'm a person who likes to eat everything together. I can't eat a bowl of greens and then eat the cornbread alone! The peas were not done, but it didn't bother me enough to complain because I ordered other vegetables. The only frustrating part was having to ask for things over and over. The cornbread wasn't totally done. We went there about an hour after opening. They just weren't very prepared. I'd try them again, but not for dine in.

Took my mother to Southern Hands Friday 3-20-2015 around 4pm.She has been there before and likes the food. I on the other hand had never been there before.Upon entering the door there was no one to greet us or seat us at a table. There were about 10 guest in the restaurant not crowded at all. So after waiting about a minute I asked the lady bartender (Do We Seat Ourselves?) She replied yes. The problem with that was every empty booth/table was dirty. I wanted to leave right then and there but keep in mind my mother likes the food. So I endured and proceeded to the booth that I wanted and waited for the young man from the kitchen to clean the table. We sat down and the young waitress came over and took our order. I ordered the fried chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy with candied yams.( see photo ) After making my order I proceed to the bathroom to wash my hands. The bathroom was spacious & clean. Although the door leading out of the bathroom is in need of repainting (see photo). I returned to my table and notice that the restaurant could use a good renovation. NO ATMOSPHERIC feel at all. The food came out surprisingly fast. As I was eating I noticed that the wait staff was more interested in socializing with there boyfriends who seemed to be just hanging out in the restaurant rather than tending to the needs of the paying customers. Now to the food. "THE CORN BREAD WAS DELICIOUS" :-) The mash potatoes were a bit thin. The candied yams were sweet and the fried chicken was ok. Not the best food and not the worst either. My advice to Southern Hands is: 1. LOSE THE SEAT YOURSELF PRACTICE & HIRE A HOSTESS TO GREET AND SEAT YOUR CUSTOMERS. 2. RENOVATE THE RESTAURANT. NEW CARPET FRESH PAINT A FEW FAKE PLANTS WILL GO A LONG WAY. 3. LAST BUT NOT LEASE PLEASE, PLEASE TRAIN YOUR STAFF TO BE MORE ATTENTIVE TO THE CUSTOMERS.

The good... I had the two piece catfish. I elected to get one fried and one grilled to try both. I definitely think the fried is better. The grilled fish didn't have the flavor it needed. The Mac and cheese and green beans were good. The slaw was a small side but it was good. The cornbread was the star of the show!!! AMAZING! The bad... The atmosphere needs a little work. The carpets were dirty and the restaurant needs a makeover! The employees were also a little unprofessional. We sat very close to the kitchen and could hear the employees arguing and being loud. Overall I would come back! The food is great especially for the price! I'm stuffed :)

The food is great I stopped in for a Togo plate after work which was convenient didn't want any fast food just some home cooked goodness and Southern Hands is it.

I heard the food was delicious and it met my expectations! The restaurant was a little to dark for me when I walked inside the facility. I hate that my food juices touched in the carry out. That's my only complaint and the PEACH COBBLER WAS HORRIBLE! But the greens and corn bread was delicious !!!

First time having real southern food, I ordered fried pork chops with green beans and cabbage for the side, it automatically comes with a corn bread. My think I licked my plate...thats how good it was, green beans and cabbage are both seasoned really well, pork chops is the good cut, seasoned really well as well. The corn bread, theres no word for it. Amazing. My boyfriend ordered spaghetti with fries and yam, I picked on his food, it was really awesome, like I dont even have words for it anymore. Staff were attentive and nice,l. Nice.environment as well. Will definitely come back if im in the area

Hit the jackpot on a business trip by coming upon this place!!! FABULOUS FOOD - I had the fried catfish, green beans, and country corn. Co-worker had the meatloaf, turnip greens, and green beans. We split an appetizer of fried green tomatoes. The cornbread is AMAZING. Can't say enough good things about the food. We arrived during the lunch rush at 12:30, but we were seated right away. Service was a bit slow, but they were very busy. The restaurant looks like it's been there for 20 years or so, a bit dated and worn, but the food more than makes up for that.

Pretty darn good soul food spot. After reading other reviews I had prepped the S/O & myself mentally for a good food meh service kinda of experience. But I must say our server was on point & the food was delish. The portion were generous compared other places, even on a crowded Sunday the wait was only 25 minutes. Overall great visit and we will definitely return.

I visited this Southern Hands location on 7-16-14 in the Hickory Ridge area. Personally, I enjoyed the food! Everything from the corn bread to the appetizer had a great taste; home made taste! The flavors made me remember my grand mother and how they would cook. As I said, the food was great but I took away one star for two reasons. 1). The gravy on my pork chops was a little too salty 2). The staff we're very loud, and unprofessional. My waitress was very nice yet loud. The people who we're working in the kitchen we're so loud and ghetto acting. I guess this comes along with the family dining experience? Overall, I would visit this location again! I was satisfied. :-)

Oh my I haven't had anything that good in 30 years. Made with Love just like it supposed to be done. Smothered pork chops rule and the sides brought tears to my eyes. Black eyed peas scratch Yes. Hand picked turnip green with a flavor explosion I have never had hints of cinnamon and allspice I think. Mashed potato were hand peeled and boiled right before lunch. Corn bread moist dense and the bomb. Even the plastic bowl tasted amazing. OMG I'm in Heaven

Hands down one of the best cornbread i've ever had ... i don't even like cornbread! Other than that, my colleague and i had lunch there ... spaghetti and meatballs, porkchops and wings. The food is pretty decent, slightly frugal on the spaghetti and meatballs but their wings are pretty big to feed 2 average men. This is pretty much a Southern/Soul food restaurant and i can't wait to go back.

Great home cooking , possibly the best of any restaurant in the entire Memphis metro area. The service is friendly - but still unfocused and slow. Our waitress brought us sweetened tea when we clearly asked for unsweetened and then took a long time to replace it when we brought the error to her attention. The waitress never came back to check on us or to offer refills.

Love the food, it's always on point. Staff is always friendly. You will want to call ahead for carryout. Great place to go when you have friends and family in town. It will not be a pain on your wallet.

My wife & I dines here every Sunday we go to Church together and we love this place. The staff is willing to serve and their grilled fish is the best I've tasted except for my wife's. Well you know I have to say that.

Tender baked chicken. Perfectly seasoned candied yams. Excellent wait staff. This will be a frequent Memphis destination.

Southern Hands is a great soul food restaurant. Food is delicious, cornbread is awesome. The portions can be small, but food and service or great. I always take out of town guests there if they have s craving for soul food.

Had a pretty good lunch here. Smothered pork chop and sides were good if not great. Would go back again when in the area and in the mood for home cooking.

Please note that this review and the pics I'll post shortly are for the Southern Hands Family Dining on Winchester, just east of Ridgeway., and not for the Southern Hands restaurant (perhaps the original) in Collierville/Hickory Hill. This restaurant opened about 6/10, and is in a former Applebee's location. In fact, the interior looks just a little Applebee-ish. The service was great, perhaps because we ate an early dinner, but it was still great, and friendly. The food was very good, hot, and very tasty- I had the pork chops, the Okra (Funny, they don't have breaded, fried okra like you'd expect), green beans, and a side salad. the entrees run about 7-11 dollars, including two sides, so they're a good value, too. Come to think of it, I can't really think of anything bad to say about this place. If you like southern cooking, give it a try!

Great spot if you're looking for some good southern cooking. Bar none the best greens I've had in Memphis. Unfortunately the portion was not enough to satisfy me. I had meatloaf and cabbage as well. The meatloaf was spectacular though not as stellar as the greens. Perhaps the best part about Southern Hands was the service. The waiters were very attentive and pleasant. We even had waiters not waiting on us come up and ask if we're doing okay. I was impressed. Service service service is the key to my heart. I only gave Southern Hands a 4, because the portions on the veggies were light. I may be giving it a 5 after a second visit though. I'll be back.
