A good friend of ours recommended the Lunchbox. We were greeted by Daniel with a warm friendly hello. He told us how the chef makes all the sauces from scratch. Very retro decorated. Bringing back some good childhood memories. We ordered the Chicken and Grids and the Leadership. Simply put: AMAZING! We will definitely come back. Kudos, Lunchbox.

Chess Pie is a must. It taste just like my Great Aunts!! Theres so much a love about this place! The concept is quite obvious once you walk in. They have the big pencils for you to use and order your food on what will remind you of like a circle one quiz. The only thing is you will definitely circle more thatn one thing!!! The menu is sooooo unique. I love the chalkboard specials and the crazy flavors of lemonade. I was there one day and they had BANANA LEMONADE!! Say What?!? I can't describe how great the food is. Just believe me when I say no matter what you order it will be good!

GREAT concept for a restaurant. Makes you feel like you are in grade school again. The decor includes the plastic chairs you find in a 4th grade classroom, menu on ruled paper, and pencils to circle what you would like to eat. Food was great. Coworkers and I dabbled in a little bit of everything. BBQ and Mac and Cheese sandwich, chicken tenders and fries, crawfish etoufee sliders, brussel sprouts, and banana foster bread pudding for dessert. The owner is a trained chef and it shows in her dishes. Awesome experience. Giant classes of the lemonade of the day was also a plus!

Student name: LUNCHBOXeats Evaluation date: 08/29/2015 Comments: Service: My waiter is an enthusiastic individual who seems to enjoy food. Based on my observations, he exhibited a positive outlook in my service, and uses his instincts to deal with matters independently and in a positive way. Grade: A Food: The menu has a well-developed vocabulary. I ordered the School Bully (crawfish sloppy joe with avocado and jojo), which has a flair for rebelling against my taste buds. Really packs a punch. Grade: A Setting: The environment is pedagogical; from the library of ancient tomes (some from the language arts, some from the sciences...upon closer inspection, one finds "The Only Math Textbook You'll Ever Need", among other curiosities) to the sharpened #2 pencils and worksheets to fill out one's food order. However, there are some redundancies--I found the projector setup to adequately supersede the flat-screen on the opposite wall, so why keep both? The water pressure in the bathroom sink is satisfactory (unlike my experiences in real school). Exposed beams and unfinished walling suggest room for improvement. Grade: B Overall grade: B+ / A- (Exceeds Requirements) Additional comments: Thanks for bringing me back to my grade school days, LUNCHBOXeats, even if only for an hour of recess. Good for kids.

If you have not made the trip, you need to go. The food is great and people are friendly! The Holiday Break Chicken is my favorite, yet I am working my way down the menu and everything has been pretty good. A cool "cafeteria" environment takes you back to school lunches, except here the food is much much much better and made from scratch. Though within a stones throw of the Forum, this gem is somewhat hidden. Definitely offers every local eatery scavenger, like myself, another reason to believe we're headed in the right direction in the restaurant category!

Really fun place and some very good menu items. Some looked and tasted great, but others fell flat on execution. The three birds (basically a pulled turducken sandwich with vegetable slaw) was pretty good and deserves 4 or 5 stars, but the eggplant fries turned out as mush and 2 stars would be generous. I'd definitely go back and try more great items from the diverse menu. Some are bound to be flops, but there look to be many home runs in the lineup.

Damn good (over the top) meatloaf sandwich and great service also. This I had a few more days in town for another visit.

I will definitely go out of my way to eat here next time I'm in Memphis. Their deep-frying magic produces some of the best avacado jojos and eggplant fries that money can buy. I never knew an eggplant could be so crispy and delicious. The dipping sauces are also great compliments for every menu item. It was incredibly disappointing that I only had room to try one of their sandwiches. The Principle's included some sort of smoked sausage, a runny egg, cheese, and tomatoes between thick slices of brioche. This restaurant is small, quiet, inexpensive, and way better than the muck you'll find on Beale Street.

This place is quirky and fun. We didn't have time to sit and eat and it was a shame. The food was fantastic and they gave generous portions. I highly recommend the fried eggplant!

Phenomenal. Why haven't I tried this place before today? Apparently, I've been living under a rock, because this place has been open for 4 years! Granted -it's not on prime real estate in downtown Memphis, but it has plenty of FREE parking. The sandwiches are very unique, so don't let the name fool you (it makes me think of boxed traditional deli sandwiches). I got the Homeroom Chicken & Grids and split a couple of sides (eggplant fries and sweet hash) with a coworker. Everything was flavorful and unordinary. I was worried that chicken tenders in between 2 waffles would be messy and tend to fall apart, but the sandwich held together exceptionally well. Our server was very friendly, and my coworker and I even played several rounds of Connect Four while waiting for our food. I can't wait to go back again and try the other menu items!

Went in great anticipation based on reviews and photos on yelp. Overall good was good but not over the top. The home mango lemonade was yummy and in huge mason jar. Chicken & grid was abit bland and lukewarm as was the homemade fries. Had to send back Mac & cheese because cold in the middle. Rib in bone sandwich was flavorful. Crawfish sloppy joes was tasty but since everything was mixed together couldn't taste the argula. They had run out of mini buns so got it as sandwich instead. Was disappointed in the kale chips. Not crispy but rather soggy. Squash casserole was great! Wonder if the huge fan above us cooled the food too fast thus contributing to the lukewarm food.

Stopped by this place for lunch yesterday with my heart set on trying their graduation burger. I arrived much later than I expected and alas- they were out! So I decided to order the leadership Mac n pork club - bread, topped w the best Mac n cheese I've ever tasted, more bread, smoked pork butt n the top piece of bread - served w a side of BBQ sauce. Hands down my new favorite spot for lunch. In addition to having fantastic, stick to your ribs grub, the outside patio had fans n misters while the inside was very clean n nicely decorated. My Favorite thing about this place? Seemed like a family run restaurant . Both my server n the cashier were beyond pleasant n I can not wait to go back. Five stars for food, five for service, five for ambiance.

I quite enjoyed the Chicken and Grids. It was different in a good way. I tried the crispy chickpeas. They were okay, but I would probably go with a different side next time. The passion fruit lemonade was very tasty. Our server was very friendly and helpful. I will definitely go back!!

This was my first time at LUNCHBOXeats. At our table we had chicken tenders-good, fries-very good, squash- good. Voted the best at our table was the Broken Rib Bones (Red wine braised short ribs of beef). The broken Rib Bones were tasty, melt in your wonderful! We had a raisin bread pudding for dessert. I give that a thumbs down. All I tasted was dry bread. We all agreed the restaurant was different - in a good way. We will go back again and try the outdoor areas when it is a little cooler.

You want to remember your elementary school cafeteria but with better food? Come to Lunchbox Eats. Its a hidden gem near FedEx Forum. They have a lemonade of the day that you have to try. Last time I went, it was mango. Homeroom Chicken and Grids, 3rd Period Smoking Birds and Graduation Burger are my favorites. Always get the mac and cheese. ALWAYS. While you wait for your food, play Connect 4 or Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots. FYI I like to cheat at RESER according to my godchild. LMAO!

  • Amanda U.

Okay, so the food here was absolutely amazing. However, the service was slow and the place just didn't seem clean. My feet stuck to the floor with every step and I could see grimy footprints of patrons past lingering, which prevents this place from having any more stars than three.

This place had become my favorite restaurant to have lunch at when I an in Memphis. All of the sandwiches are unique and the food is great. Very casual atmosphere but you must try the fried Brussel sprouts... even if you THINK you do not like them...

Either they were off their game or they hired new (and not so competent) kitchen staff, but lunch here was one of the worst I can recall in recent memory. I'm a little perplexed by all the glowing reviews. First, it took 40 minutes to get our food - with just three other tables in the restaurant, only one of which was there before us. I ordered the Extra Curricular Portabella. The menu described it as a Wellington-style sandwich wrapped in phyllo. It was basically greasy, grilled (yeah, how does that happen?) vegetables on top of dough with the consistency of a wet paper towel. One of my friends ordered four vegetable sides - only two were edible. The kale chips tasted like straight-up 2-week-old oil. Everything was drenched in grease. On the upside, the decor is cute and quirky and they have a nice patio. Service was solid too. But the food was just awful.

Even though Luchbox Eats has been open since Labor Day 2010, this was my first visit. The main fare is unique sandwiches with names that evoke school: Homeroom Chicken and Grids, Principal's office Link, 3rd . Period Smoking Birds, served on school-type lunch trays. The menu is printed on a piece of notebook paper. We had the 3rd Period Smoking Birds - delicious smoked turkey on Texas toast, Holiday Break Chicken -chicken salad sandwiched in cornbread, and the flagship sandwich Homeroom Chicken and grids- fried chicken strips on waffles The staff is attentive and welcoming, and the owners obviously take pride in the property with flowering plants on the patio and side walls. Seek this place out. It may be a little hard to find on 4th, south of Linden and the FedEx Forum. It will be worth the trip. Note: Limited weekday hours, closing at 3. Open weekends until 7 PM.

Found this sweet little place via Yelp right around the corner from the FedEx Forum. LOVE the concept! Adorable decoration right down to the restroom sink is a school desk with an apple soap dispenser. You do your HOMEWORK in filling out your order with a No 2 pencil and your meal comes on a lunch tray! Family owned and home cooking! The Graduation Burger is like Shepherd's Pie on a bun! The Scooby Snacks is so cute in a paper sack. Chicken salad was delish. The BEST THING we had was grandma's Pineapple Upside Down Cake. UN-BELIEVABLE! So GOOD! What a best kept secret!

One of my favorite restaurants on our trip from Boston to Los Angeles, we had lunch here after a morning at the incredible civil rights museum. It's just outside the downtown area and feels of the beaten path, and that location just adds to its local, casual vibe. The staff were very friendly and were totally honest when they said "everything here is good" Try the chicken & grids, try the salad, try a dessert, MUST try the lemonade!

Love! They lose a star for the squash fries. ..soggy but well seasoned. I had the chicken and waffles. ..nice. I tried the Turkey burger from a friend's plate and loved it. ..moist and well seasoned. The lemonade is the main reason for the review OMG!!love it. So refreshing. Definitely will be back. Great atmosphere and nice staff. Very cozy

I've been eating to try this places for ages. And life kept getting in the way. A fellow yelper invited me to lunch and knew it was now or never. I'm glad it was now. The theme of this place is really cute. It's a school lunchroom. There are even games you can play while waiting. Or you can watch tv. The ordering is text style, marking your selections with a number 2 pencil. And I felt like I was taking a test. It was so hard to decide what to try. It's a trap I'm sure of it. I might have even chewed the pencil had I not remembered where I was. I ordered the lemonade of the day which happened to be delicious. Green apple. I never would have thought of that convo. I also got the graduation burger. Which is misleading. It's a huge hunk of meatloaf along with cheese potatoes crispy onion strings on toasted bread. It was soooooo yummy. The only thing I could find wrong with the sandwich was that it started getting soggy. A bun might be a better fit. I ordered the avocado jo jos. Friend avocado is heart warming. It was seasoned well and came with a chipotle dipping sauce. I'm pretty sure that it was a whole avocado. Overall the experience was nice. Our waitress was attentive and sweet. I'll go back if only so I can try every last creation they have. Portions are huge, so sharing sides might be the way to go next time. I wish lunch was like that when I was in school

This place is pretty cool! Very original. Went here for lunch with a couple of co workers. Really enjoyed it. Got the chicken and waffles with fries. I would recommend it! The tray took me back and I really felt like I was in grade school but with great food!

This place was really good. We had great sandwiches with terrific, local ingredients. Their watermelon lemonade is flippin' awesome. I agree with other reviews: cool atmosphere in a non-distinct location (I think the location was fine, but it isn't easily stumbled upon) and terrific food!

After hearing about this place since it opened and seeing all the positive reviews I just had to check it out. I had the broken rib ( braised short ribs on a grilled cheese) with Mac and cheese and the squash, the bf had the pork and mac n cheese sandwich with fries and the avacado. I also tried the lemonade of the day and we split a chocolate cobbler. Everything was very good, heavy but good; lunch for two was $60 with tax and tip. We each picked a sandwich and got two sides, which in retrospect we could have shared two between us but that would have only brought the bill down $7, we also got a dessert to share based on the reviews - without these extras we would have spent $45 total - for what at the end of the day is a meat and sides lunch place, Im sorry but no. I'm no health nut but I would have appreciated a salad or something light as a side option. I get that it's soul food but come on, don't clog my arteries completely. I am glad we went though, the food was very tasty and its a fun place to experience. Very well executed, maybe if they were open for dinner I wouldn't mind the prices. I would consider coming back to bring an out of towner but this won't make my regular rotation.

I have heard and read rave reviews of this place, so I guess I went into this meal with high expectations. While this place did a very good lunch, I feel the price was a little higher than the value I received. I ordered the Homeroom Chicken and Grids with Mac n Cheese and Kale Chips. The sandwich had good flavour and the honey mustard brought it all together. but it seemed a little dry. The Mac n Cheese was delicious. The Kale Chips were something that I decided to try last minute. They were subpar. Sadly, they ran out of sweet tea after my first glass. With the strength and value that Kyle gives this place, I will give and earnest second chance. I think I will try the Graduation burger next time.

Damn that's good!! They need a new word to describe these gems, because the word sandwich doesn't do these babies justice. Cool decor. Delish lemonade served in large mason jars. Great staff that helps you make a choice when drooling at that inventive menu. I'm just disappointed that I didn't have room for dessert.

Very unique eclectic place. Very cool theme with an inviting feel. My server was nice and welcoming and the food came out quickly. The chicken and grids were fantastic!! Definitely check this place out for a unique lunch that has something for any taste.

Might not be the healthiest of fare, but it was really good. I had the pork grilled cheese which tasted wonderful. Really awesome environment. Lighting was kind of weird; came out feeling like id been in a warehouse for an hour. Cute games and toys and books. Really unique and fun. Servers were friendly and attentive. Two complaints. One is the structure of the food. I don't think I was the only one who found the food difficult to eat. My sandwich was sloppily arranged and I had to use a fork and knife. Second, I am fine paying $12 for a sandwich, but a side should be included in that. At least do fries or chips. I'll be back!

  • Tanya H.

5 Stars for the Blood Orange Lemonade!!! 4 Stars for the meal...the squash casserole was a no for me but when the server noticed it still on my plate, she offered a different side item (at no additional charge). After taking a closer look at the squash casserole she also shared with me what was wrong with the casserole and apologized. The Broken Rib sandwich is really good but bread gets soggy pretty quick!

Great hidden gem. I hope more people find this place. The sandwiches are anything but typical. I tried the chicken and grids today. It is fried chicken tenders with cheese between two waffles. It's not Roscoe's, but it is a great sandwich. The fries are great and the mac and cheese is incredible. Save room for dessert. I tried the strawberry cobbler and it was too good. I have never had it before and I was very impressed. It came out in a small dish that was still bubbling. Add a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

I love the convenience of the new Lisa's Lunchbox and that they offer smoothies on top of their current menu. Prices are reasonable and portions are great! Still wanting to try take home casseroles too.

Lunchbox Eats instantly became my favorite sandwich spot in Memphis. Their version of chicken & waffles made into a sandwich will be tough for me not to order each time I visit. And don't get me started on the 1lb BAG of home fries that I ordered, they were fantastic. Today's lemonade of the day was tangerine. I am usually that person who gets at least two refills while at a restaurant, but the glass the lemonade is served in is so big I was only able to drink the one glass.

Honestly, I'm flabbergasted at all of the 5 star ratings here. No option to leave negative stars or 0, and it's forcing me to leave at least 1. But it's not deserving even that. Truly the most disgusting restaurant experience I've had in a long time. I literally reek of grease. My hair, my clothes, my hands, hell, I think even my skin is oozing grease. I ordered 4 sides, thinking, "Hey, at least in a place where most things are fried, I can get some veggies." 2 of my sides were completely inedible. The kale chips tasted like 3 month-old grease and the little bag they came in was soaked. I eat kale often, and cook chips myself. This dish had absolutely no resemblance to anything close to kale. Eggplant fries? You cut it open the the whole thing melts in a pool of grease. And the best part? I paid $17 dollars yes you read that right $17 dollars for a lunch (that included a 15% tip) that I couldn't even eat. Do what you want, try it for yourself, but personally I won't be back. Under no circumstances. I guess the only thing positive to be said is that the people were nice. But all the charm in the world won't keep a restaurant open when the food is that sub-par.

I love this place...LOVE it! I am a sucker for a good sandwich, and this place has plenty. Chicken and waffles sandwich, meatloaf burger, beef short ribs sandwich, turkey/chicken/and duck (all smoked over black cherry wood) on a sandwich...together! I could go on and on, as there are plenty of other options. Each of these sandwiches are not your run of the mill offerings. They use artisan style breads, unexpected toppings, and general "goodness" to create some of the best sandwiches you have ever put in your mouth. If you ever get tired of the sandwiches, they also have several salads to choose from that are easily as eclectic and good. They also offer fish tacos that are quite good. Need something to accompany that sandwich...they've got you covered. Veggie slaw, mac & cheese, sweet hash, French fries, and even dill pickles. The restaurant has a school cafeteria theme that is well done. It is not over the top, nor is it too cutesy. It's just enough to relay the restaurant's theme without being overly intrusive into the great food this place is serving. The staff is also very accommodating and very kind and courteous. If you are downtown, or anywhere near the city of Memphis for that matter, you should eat here for lunch. Often. Five solid stars.

I didn't feel so great after eating the "Leadership mac and Pork club," but I should've known what I was getting into ordering a sandwich with pork and macaroni and cheese! It was pretty tasty, just a bit too much grease! I'll give this place another shot, as it looks like there are better options on the menu. Atmosphere wise- such a cool place. I really enjoyed playing battleship while we waited on our food

  • Tiffany L.

I don't know about you, but when I think back to the cafeteria food I had in school, I don't remember "Deep Fried Chicken sandwiched between Two Golden Brown Cheddar Waffles, topped with Muenster Cheese served with Whole Grain Honey Mustard or Green Tomato Relish" or "Slow smoked Black Cherry Wood pulled Cajun Turkey, Molasses Chicken Succulent Duck and Veggie Slaw are stacked on Fresh Baked 7 Grain Wheat Bread served with Tri-Bird Pan Liquor, choice of BBQ Sauce or Green Tomato Relish" Sounds good, right? Lunchbox Eats has a pretty dedicated group of lunchtime regulars. They give a unique twist on Southern classics (like chicken and waffles, macaroni and cheese and barbecue pulled pork sandwiches) and package it in an awesome downtown space with an adorable theme. The decor is middle school chic, streamlined with bright colors. The menu is written on the blackboard and food is served on compartmentalized trays, similar to what you were probably served spaghetti on back in school. But, this food is 6 steps above what you got in the cafeteria. Lunchbox Eats bakes bread fresh every day, makes desserts from scratch, uses local ingredients and fashions its daily specials and sides around what's in season. When we dropped in on a Saturday afternoon, business was a bit slow, but the house is usually packed during the week. Lunchbox Eats is only open for lunch during the week (10am-3pm) but they do have extended hours on Saturday (12-7pm). The food is served a la carte and the prices my seem a bit high, but there's quality in every bite. The Homeroom Chicken and Grids is one of the most popular sandwiches (and my personal favorite). I've heard good things about the Leadership Mac and Pork Club as well. Oh, and If the lemonade of the day is carmelized pineapple, you'll be doing yourself a great disservice if you miss it.

How much do I love this place?!?!? A LOT that's how much. Its such a cute and fun (literally) spot for lunch. It has a school lunch room theme that was very well executed- cute, quirky, and not at all corny. And what is super cool about this place, BOARD GAMES!. Jenga, Connect Four, Life, all the classics are available for you to play while there. I think this place would be AWESOME for a first date. Apparently, there is a lemonade of the day which changes daily. Today I had the pineapple lemonade, which was super yummy and was served in a extra large mason jar (all drinks are served in mason jars). I had the graduation burger- meatloaf, smashed potatoes, and crispy onions between two buttery slices of texas toast. I decided to pass on the sides because I knew the sandwich would be rather large. I was right! That thing was huge, it was 2 whole meals in one sandwich. Needless to say it was delicious. I was dining solo, so I thought it would be nice to get my guy a dessert to go. The selections today where mini sweet potato or chess pies and Hershey pound cake. I settled on the sweet potato pie. I do not really like sweet potato pie, with that being said.. OMG it was soooo good! Like it is really really good. That sweet potato pie gets 5 stars by itself so if you are going, do not pass that up!

Not a fan. As a vegetarian I don't want my food to taste experimental. The portobello sandwich on puff pastry is all wrong. Second time tried to just get the link sandwich without the link. Runny egg ruined a potentially decent makeshift sandwich. My husbAnd tried the turkey burger and only made it through two bites. Locals love it, but these new residents weren't pleased after two attempts.

An interesting themed restaurant (feels like grade school complete with board games) with very good soul food. watermelon lemonade was definitely good, but a bit pricey. chicken and waffles were decent, but Ive had much better. overall a good lunch spot if you want to spend $15 and have to waddle out the door afterward. very greasy food (soul food by definition) but quite good. Order light or youll need a nap :)

I went to LunchBox Eats for lunch yesterday per a Twitter recommendation. I really like some aspects of this place, but I really don't like others. The ambiance was interesting. It has a very "elementary school" feel, with board games to play sprinkled throughout the room. It was very cute. Per the sign at the front, my friend and I found a table to sit. It was 1130 on a Tuesday afternoon and not very busy at all. After about 30 seconds, our waitress came and took our drink orders, but I could tell she wanted to be anywhere else. No, "Hello, how are you doing? My name is _____, and I'll be your server today. Can I get you started with something to drink?" It was more like, "Hey, what do you want to drink?" She was very rude. She came back with our waters and asked if we were ready to order. We were, and I started to tell her my order, but she gave me a look and pointed to the red slip of paper in front of me. No words, just a point. Seriously? I work in foodservice while I'm in school, and I would NEVER just point to something like that without explaining. Very rude. Once my friend and I filled out our slips of paper, our waitress walked away and gave them to the kitchen. It took about 15 minutes to receive our food, which was a very reasonable wait (especially since we were distracted by playing ConnectFour). The food was served in a bag on a lunch tray-- VERY cute! We both got the Scooby Snack, which was essentially chicken tenders and fries. Both were good, but the fries were a little too spicy for my taste. While we were eating, a very nice lady came and asked how our food was, and gave my friend a to-go box kindly and promptly when she asked. This woman was 100000% nicer than our rude waitress. I assume she's a manager or an owner. We never received our checks, but we went to the counter to pay; I'm not sure if that's standard or if our waitress was just slow in giving us our checks. As I paid, I talked to a man behind the counter, who, like the manager/owner woman, was very kind. In short, I like this place. The ambiance is cute and the food is of good quality and reasonably priced. However, the waitress was really off-putting and almost makes me not want to return. I probably will, though, but if I see her when I walk in, I'll likely run out the door.

Read all the good reviews online and decided to try it. This was, hands down, one of the worst lunch experiences I have had in Memphis. The mac & Cheese was runny and tasteless. The squash casserole was warm on top and cold in the middle. It also, had absolutely no flavor. My daughter got the chicken strips and they were soggy. Nothing we had was edible. I went back to work and took two Tums.

After two visits to Lunchbox Eats, I have no reservations in declaring it the best sandwich shop in Memphis. The food is creative, southern, and delicious. They pair combinations of ingredients that I never would have thought to pair, but in hindsight seem so perfect and obvious. My only complaint (and this is no fault of their own) is that it's impossible to make the trek downtown from Hacks Cross for a weekday lunch. My wife has ordered the chicken and waffles (apparently one of their best-sellers), and the pulled pork sandwich. She was impressed with both. For me, however, the clear standout is the buttery grilled cheese with hotlink and fried egg sandwich (I think it's called the Principal's Office Link). This item alone will make me a loyal customer for years to come. They also have some interesting sides, but the size and superiority of the sandwiches really make the sides unnecessary unless you just want to be a glutton. It's located on an easily-overlooked side street behind the FedEx Forum. The neighborhood is a little on the sketchy side, but on Saturday afternoons I have never had a problem parking close to the restaurant. Hopefully, the out-of-the-way location will prevent this gem from becoming overrun with tourists. The atmosphere is pleasant and loft-inspired; the service is great. On the two Saturday's I have visited, the restaurant has been nearly empty. A perfect 5 stars -- don't change a thing!

My family stop in while passing through Memphis. It was well worth it! The kids love the chicken and waffles! We played games while we wait and the service was good! Loved it!

My visit was a blast. I really like the concept and the greens. I could just have the greens and be happy. But I also had the fish tacos, which were delicious.

I REALLY like this place. The lunch I have had has been VERY good and creative. The hard part is NOT ordering too much food because it's all so tempting....and the way you order (by checking items off a list with a pencil) lends one the opportunity to order too much. The only drawback to this place is that it seems to take a while to get your food. Not that the wait is so long that you're about to go back into the kitchen to see what's going on, but the two times I have been for lunch in the last few months I am there longer than I prefer because the food has taken a little longer coming out, and then the wait staff is a little slow coming back to the table after the food is served. For this reason, I won't come here if I need to get in-and-out in 45 minutes. Typically I have been here over an hour, up to 90 minutes - which is too long for most business lunches. I do want to end this review by getting down on my knees and praising whomever makes the desserts. I never eat dessert after lunch....unless I come here. The first time I ate here my group ordered 4 different desserts to try. I recall 3 of those because they were straight-up the BEST version of these sweets I've ever put in my mouth - Chess Pie, Lemon Square and Rum Cake. Oh Great Lord these are soooo good! I have never cared for Rum Cake or Chess Pie - both are common home cooking staples in Kentucky. But I am now a believer.....wow! (my mouth is watering just thinking about it) GO HERE FOR THE DESSERT.....and if you have time, stay for lunch or dinner!

The Homeroom Chicken and Grids from brand-new downtown restaurant Lunchbox Eats is what KFC's Double Down sandwich wishes it could be, but can't. It's a brilliant take on the classic Southern combination of chicken and waffles: battered fried chicken strips covered with cheese nestled between the two halves of a waffle. If that sounds a little extreme, trust me, it is. The only thing remotely good for you involved is the optional green tomato relish. If the batter on the chicken were any thicker, this sandwich would just be another carb-loaded gut bomb. Instead, it's delicate despite its density. It's both the best idea and the worst idea I've had today. The evil geniuses behind this sandwich work at Lunchbox Eats, which opened last week. Their menu is mostly soul food with a twist, and the decor is school themed (to order, you circle what you want on a worksheet, put your name on the paper and turn it in). They're only open for lunch Monday - Friday.

This is a real hidden gem in Memphis. The ambiance takes you back to grade school with our meal being served in a Captain Planet plastic lunch box. Loved it! The numerous board games to play entertained us while we waited for out meal. The chicken and grids came highly recommended by others on yelp. Outstanding! Got it with the honey mustard. For $2 extra, I was able to get the homage potato chips. For a side, I ordered the Mac and cheese. It was slightly toasted on top, just the way I like it. Can't believe I haven't made it in here sooner. Will definitely be back!

A very cute atmosphere with friendly service. I got the portobello which had good flavor but it was served with a phyllo dough bun- impossible to pick up. Ate it with a fork but would have preferred a different bun (I expected a sandwich type of thing). The eggplant fries were great. Hubs had the chicken and waffles which he said was pretty good. Overall, a fun experience. The food was ok and a bit pricey. I would go more for the experience and less because the food is exceptional.

I absolutely loved this restaurant! Very casual and friendly atmosphere. Great service. Unique decor and concept! We were given a large number two pencil and the menu on a sheet of notebook paper so we could "place our order". Drinks are also served in mason jars, bonus! Thought that was cool! The menu is not what you'd expect from such a small place, nor is the food! Three of the five people at our table ordered the Chicken and Grids Sandwich. It's basically chicken nestled in between golden waffles and topped with muenster cheese. It is SPECTACULAR. I had a side of macaroni and cheese as well which was truly life changing. This place is awesome and surprisingly was not booming on a Saturday afternoon. It is not too far from Beale Street either. Make sure you check the hours before going, however. DEFINITELY one of my favorites in Memphis.

Fun. Well thought out flavor combinations. Sweet as can be staff. From SCRATCH sides. No bull crap cost cutting things. When I was there the owner was trying to figure our how to use a bucket of fresh figs from her grandmothers garden. She was even invited to participate in a Couchon Heratige event . Nuff said.

School is out but the Lunch Box Eats is definitely in! For starters, I just loved that the flavored lemonade was served in big mouth mason jars. The meatloaf sandwich was out of this region. It tastes like some type of northern recipe; which was very, very delicious along with the homemade sliced potatoes. The entire restaurant has a nostalgic school theme. Best of all they offer free wifi and use iPads along with the "square" for processing debit/credit transactions. It's just a really cool spot for lunch. Don't forget the dessert, the pudding pie with the rum glaze will send you on your way with the feel of a lil happy hour. ;-)

I've had this place bookmarked on my yelp for awhile now. Finally got to try it today & my husband & I was nodding our heads & "mmm-ing" the whole time. We ordered the home room chicken & waffles, Mac & cheese, principle office link..& the foodie in me got greedy & ordered us an extra sandwich to try & ordered the holiday break chicken. We also got to try the lemonade of the day, which was cherry. I was bummed it wasn't that pineapple lemonade everyone on here kept talking about. The cherry lemonade tasted like any other lemonade. Really nothing special in my opinion. The holiday break chicken was good but if you're not a fan of onions like me, you wouldn't like it too much. Felt it was onion over load. Had lots of sweet white strings of onions in there plus green onions. Onion flavor for me was just too strong. & for some odd reason my onion loving husband just thought it was ok too. But we absolutely Loved the chicken & waffles & principle office link. We couldn't decide which was our favorite. Both were delicious & worth coming back for. My husband loved the Mac & cheese. He was so full but he still ate it all. Portions were filling. & overall 3 sandwiches, 1 Mac & cheese & a lemonade cost us a little over $30 not including tip. Not too bad I guess since in my opinion the sandwiches were worth it. The place is adorable. Has a cute little patio in the front & inside has a tv & a projector. Also has a stack of board games (operation, connect four, jenga, etc.) to play on the middle table. Would definitely come back again.

The first and last place we ate when we visited Memphis. Seriously, as soon as we took one bite, we knew once wasn't going to be enough. Tucked away behind the FedEx Forum, off the beaten tourist path, Lunchbox serves up what were quite possibly the *best* sandwiches we've ever had, paired with perfectly refreshing lemonade of the day. Gracious staff (owners?) are icing on the proverbial cake! Speaking of which, as hard as it might be, save room for one or more of the homemade desserts. Chocolate cobbler, anyone? Mmm, yes, please! What we ate: Day 1: ---------- Holiday Break Chicken - Moist Chicken, Crispy Celery, and Sweet Onions are tossed in a TOP SECRET Creamy Dressing to create an unforgettable Chicken Salad, which is then mounded on Buttery Cornbread Toast Homeroom Chicken & Grids - Our version of Chicken & Waffles is Deep Fried Chicken sandwiched between Two Golden Brown Cheddar Waffles, topped with Muenster Cheese served with Whole Grain Honey Mustard or Green Tomato Relish Lemonade of the day: Passion Fruit Day 2: --------- Leadership MAC & PORK Club - Hickory Smoked Pork Butt, Our Famous Mac & Cheese, and naturally Sweet Onions are layered between Three Slices of Thick Cut White Bread to create a Non-Traditional Club Graduation Burger - Nestled between Toasted White Bread a Juicy Cut of an American Classic, MEATLOAF- tunneled with Pepperjack cheese, crowned with Creamy Mashed Potatoes, Tomato Gravy and Crispy Tabasco Onions Lemonade of the day: Green Apple Dessert: Chocolate Cobbler

Have yet to have a bad meal. Love the lemonade of the day in a big ole mason jar. A lunchtime must if you have never been. Be sure to check the chalkboard for the day's specials. Try to save room for dessert. I think the chess pie is their best.

I picked this place for lunch today based on Yelp reviews. I met friends from out of town who had young children in tow. It was a fantastic experience for all. First, the atmosphere is both charming and hip. They take the school cafeteria theme down to the tiniest detail and it really works! They have games available to keep the kids (and adults) occupied. The food is good ole' southern comfort food taken to a new level of innovative preparation and flavor. I order off the chalkboard and had three veggies: Avocado Jo Jo's (which were lightly fried avocado wedges), roasted asparagus, and fried brussel sprouts. The fried items were only lightly fried, the flavors were fresh but well developed with the right seasonings, and the portions were just right. I also order the lemonade of the day which was cantaloupe. It was AMAZING! Fresh melon pulp, served in a huge mason jar with a straw that was 1/2" or bigger in diameter (that took some getting used to). If you are anywhere near the FedEx Forum (or not) you must give this lunch spot a try. I will definitely be back!

This place is awesome. My wife and I were traveling through and found this cool eatery on yelp and chose it on all the positive reviews. When we walked in the entrance via the patio, a waitress kindly and quickly cleaned off a patio table for us. We really wanted to sit outside as it was sunny and one of the nicest days in a while and they were accommodating. The chairs on the patio are old school classroom chairs. I ordered the daily special of lemonade, it was served in a jar with a rather large straw. On a hot and sunny day if the drink has insufficient ice it just melts and gets watered down quickly and tastes bad. Mine had plenty of ice and I enjoyed it for the entire 45 minutes while we were there. It was fantastic, did not have too flavor just the right amount. I ordered the waffles and chicken, something that I think is more common in the south but I had never tried before. When our food came it was served on lunch trays you'd see in an old elementary school. It was seriously awesome. It is served with a side of honey mustard that really made a unique flavor. My wife ordered the Mac-n-cheese BBQ sandwich. She loved it. I tried it too and was really impressed. The lunchbox is located just a few blocks from Beale street and is kind of hard to find. The 5 minute walk was totally worth though of you're passing through memphis check this place out you won't be disappointed.

This place is so awesome! The lemonades are delish & the food is fun satisfying! I enjoyed the 3rd Period Smoking Birds on my last visit with a friend from out of town who had the Principal's Office Link. We both could barely finish the meal but forced ourselves b/c it was just so GOOD!!! If I worked closer to downtown, I'm sure I'd be here more often!

A unique take on chicken and waffles, Lunchbox Eats offers soul food for the Memphis hipster. A distinctly disconnected experience awaits the customer willing to venture away from the Trolley Line and into finger-licking goodness. Not a place to see or be seen, the simple menu will keep you coming back for your old favorites or new indulgence. The mac & cheese didn't disappoint and apparently the menu continues to evolve regularly, so repeated visits are recommended. Lunchbox Eats offers a unique experience with themed bathrooms and chalkboard menus. Make sure that you leave room for an individual or shared dessert; I don't have sweets all the time, but this place will satisfy anyone's sugar or chocolate cravings! Friendly service, limited seating and an off-Beale location will keep this place cool no matter what time of year. I can honestly say that I would have been happy ordering anything on the menu. Having lived in Memphis for 4 years, this little spot was a welcome addition to the artery-clogging, smile-inducing, food coma producing lineup of restaurants downtown. If I still lived here, this would be a go-to destination for a filling lunch or tasty dinner. Anyplace with "fresh lemonade of the day" gets a gold star in my book!

I will admit that this place can be a bit expensive- especially for a lunch spot but that being said- the portions are huge and the food is top quality. I have been here a few times since first purchasing a living social coupon for it. All I can say is that it is one of my favorite places to go in Memphis- it is a great mix of deliciousness and southern style cooking. I highly recommend the Principal Office Link Sandwich, every time I go there I promise myself I will try something else but I always end up going back to this one. It gets a bit messy with the egg inside but if you don't mind getting a little dirty and using a lot of napkins you will love it! The Mac and Cheese is always very very good and my girlfriend always gets the Chicken and Waffles which she says are the best! On top of that- the staff has always been super attentive and friendly (including the owners who work there frequently) you can tell everyone really takes pride in the restaurant and the food. I also love the Memphis pride- they stay open for all Tigers/Grizzly games. I plan on going tonight before the game! My only gripe is that I work out in East Memphis so I can't go more often!

The Homeroom Chicken and Waffles were good, the dill pickles were not. Service was friendly but very lackadaisical. Everything is ala carte, with the result that prices are too high for both the quality and quantity of what you get. Spent $15, not including tip, for sandwich, one side, and a drink. I don't get the rave reviews for this place. It's okay, but nothing special.

Really cute little spot. Fun ambiance and decor. Nice little exterior patio. Food was interesting and tasty. Glad someone else's Yelp review led us to this place while we were passing through Memphis on a road trip. Would go again if back in town.

Don't let the location scare you away from this place. The food is delicious, and creative. I had trouble selecting, and finally decided on the mac and pork which was a pork sandwich with a layer of caramelized onions and a layer of mac and cheese on freshly baked Texas toast. We also got the chocolate cobbler for dessert, which was also appeared to be homemade. Everything was great and the service was excellent.

Awesome little lunch spot. Passing thru Memphis on a weekend and thanks to fellow Yelper's reviews, found this gem. Fantastic decor (we played scrabble while we waited), and the food was superb, including the cantaloupe lemonade! Yum! Go there. You won't regret it.

Maybe I was a little too excited and maybe we had bad timing... 3 out of four of us ordered things that they had recently run out of which we were told is because of the basketball games recently so we will give them that. The food Here was completely different then anywhere else so that mad it pretty good. Though, it being a mainly lunch place we thought we could get in and out and it would be reasonably cheap, but it took about 45 minutesto get our food and my wife and I spent 35 not counting gratuity ...also didn't like the fact that you paid for each side separately, though the sides were really good. So in general it was pretty expensive and took a long time for a lunch spot. they were also out of most desserts and the one I settled for, chocolate layered cake... Half of it is still l in my fridge because it wasn't good at all... And I'm a big boy and you know what they say "like a fat kid loves cake" I really want to love this place, I REALLY DO! but I just didn't. Great idea, great potential, and maybe it was a bad day... We will try it again And all the staff were extremely nice and welcoming! Five stars for the staff

For older people it will bring back childhood memories of school & the fun games we played with our friends. The food was so full of flavor. It's served and you think, oh I'm gonna leave here hungry there's not enough, but then you get to eating and all the flavors start making your mouth happy & then your tummy starts in and before you know it you feel content and look forward to the next visit and what your going to try then. We plan on trying everything here because it all sounds yummy, plus the pics others posted look as yummy too. This place is definitely a keeper. The fries & the kale chips are so yummy. Didn't get to try lemonade cause it was sold out, but food was good enough to return again until we can try all the food and all the different lemonades they have to offer.

5 star baby. Ran across this place while in Memphis for a long weekend. Holy cow this place was great and I rarely give 5 stars but this place was exceptional. I tried the catfish salad with hard boiled egg sandwich. The eggplant fries were also killer. I really liked how you could play old board games while you waited on your food. My wife whipped me at Connect Four several times. I will be back.

Lunchbox Eats is my favorite restaurant in town. I dream about it. If it wasn't so far away (and open for such strange hours) I'd probably eat there everyday. I take everyone i know and care about to this restaurant. So, naturally, I took my girlfriend. That was a mistake. To say she was unimpressed would be an understatement. When I asked her how it was, she shrugged and then proceeded to give the restaurant three stars! Normally I don't condone domestic violence. But in that particular instance I felt a deep empathy for Chris Brown. Seriously, though, I was legitimately upset with her all day. I was so upset, i made HER sleep on the couch that night (take that, equality!) Any sandwich that can make you consider, however briefly, assaulting someone because they said it was less than fantastic is the mark of a great sandwich. I love you Lunchbox Eats, apparently more than I love my girlfriend.

This is a super cute and fun place to eat. Everything is setup like elementary school, you even fill out ur order like a pop quiz. They have games and food comes out in a cafeteria tray. Staff is nice. They have art you an buy from a local artist. It kind of looks like its In a scary place but its fine. Not sure if I would bring a kid here though because its small and kids are loud. My faves are broken rib bones, home room chicken, and holiday break chicken, and the Mac n cheese. They have different lemonade flavors daily but to me thy never put enough flavor so it just tastes like lemonade and they are huge so two people can share a lemonade.

I think I just found my new favorite lunch spot. Lunchbox Eats manages to be eccentric and unique both in its food and design, without being strange or uninviting. The nostalgia of childhood board games and the school cafeteria is something that can appeal to anyone (unless you were homeschooled, in which case, the school cafeteria was just the kitchen), and I could seriously see myself burning an hour there in some intense games of Connect 4 and Don't Break The Ice even if they didn't serve food. The biggest reason that Lunchbox gets my "favorite" stamp is the homeroom chicken and grid sandwich. I had never had chicken and waffles in any format before, so I decided to give it a try. This sandwich, oh this sandwich, made me happier than Pharell in a dumb hat. I can think of no better way to deliver fried chicken, than with muenster cheese on top and stuffed between 2 soft, moist cheddar waffles. The honey mustard that they serve with it is insane, I'm not sure if it's homemade or not, but it goes perfectly with the sandwich and I wish I could buy a bottle of it. I ordered a side of Mac & Cheese as well, and it was unlike any other that I've had, but still delicious. It had a bit of a smokey BBQ flavor to it, and was nicely browned on top. My advice is to go here as soon as you get the chance, and sit in their very cool restaurant. It's a nice change from the dark, sticky dining rooms of Beale Street, and more laid back than the professional-packed Main Street. I can't wait to go back and try something new.

This place is truely special! I love the mixture of comfort food with a fancy twist! The atmosphere is also something to be admired! It took me back to my elementary and middle school days! The only complaint is that they don't have extended hours!!!

After three years of wishy washing around, I finally tried this place. First I do realize that it is supposed to be modern soul food. But even with that there is an exceptional amount of grease in everything (literally had to take a long ass shower after eating here). Surprisingly though, even though it is laced with grease the food didn't feel too heavy. I went with the fish tacos and the avocado jojos and my lunch partner had the grad burger and large fries. The only thing I didn't like was that the fish was fried instead of blackened and the tortilla was dripping in grease. Veggie slaw that topped it was bomb, super refreshing, just enough to cut out the fact that the fish was fried. Deep fried avocados... just get it. The meatloaf sandwich was delicious but otherwise, greasy and kinda unmemorable. Fries should be skipped, (and honestly... deep fried avocados are a big win) they were overcooked but had a nice seasoning. Mango lemonade was tasty too. I am a bit underwhelmed by this place, and the grease is extremely off putting(even if it's a soul food place). But it is a solid lunch spot with pleasant service and plenty of things to do to occupy your time while you wait for your food, and plus, I don't really know where else I could get that deep fried avocado.

Lunchbox Eats has a very interesting ambience. The building is kind of off to itself, not to far away from the Fed Ex Forum and the hustle and bustle of Beale, but feels like it's the only little cafe in a small town. I mean that in a cool way. (I don't like small towns.) The nice little patio is filled with plants, has a fan or two, and feels somewhat secluded from the street right next to it. It's a pet friendly patio, and the old dog that greeted us seemed like he belonged there, even though he was another diner's pet. When we walked in the door, the first thing we noticed was the shelf filled with books and all the art work. It took us a few minutes to realize there was a tv on the wall and board games to keep us occupied while we were waiting on our food. The tables and chairs were reminiscent of school days, the food is brought on nicer lunchroom trays, and the menus are typed on notebook paper. Drinks are served in mason jars and the salt and pepper shakers are like something your crazy great aunt would have had. Going with their school concept, I'd definitely give them an A for the atmosphere and nostalgia. The food is good, but not outstanding. They have unique menu items. For instance, I had the chicken and grid. It was a chicken strip sandwich served between two halves of a thick waffle with Muenster cheese and honey mustard. My husband had the third period smoking bird. That is smoked chicken, turkey and duck meat topped with slaw and served between two slices of thick whole grain bread. He also had a side of mac and cheese, which was homemade and probably the most impressive part of the meal. He enjoyed his sandwich as well as I did mine. Unlike many restaurants we visit, we aren't craving it again today. For food, I'd give them a B-, or maybe even a B+ if creativity is factored in. The prices aren't outrageous, but they did seem a little high to me. If you want to charge $8-$10 for a sandwich, throw in a side for that price instead of charging an additional $3-$4 for a side, plus another $2-$3 for a drink. We can get better food for the same price at several other places nearby. They get a C- for prices. All in all, we will probably go back. When we have friends with younger children come to visit, this would be a great spot to take them. For just the hubs and me, or even with our teenagers, I'm thinking we'll probably opt for somewhere else. We enjoyed it, but we just weren't totally wowed by this place.

Oh yes - one of my favorite places in Memphis for a delightfully Southern and soulful (and a little sinful) sandwich! I'm deeply committed to the Holiday Break Chicken sandwich. They take white meat pulled chicken, sweet onions and celery and toss it all together in a 'top secret' dressing (I'm going to guess it's mayonnaise-based) and then they squeeze it between two small pieces of toasted, slightly sweet cornbread. Yes, CORNBREAD. But don't let the smaller size deceive you because this sandwich is packed with chicken salad - so much so, that it may just ooze out of the sides. Do grab an extra napkin! If you're paying with plastic, they use Square via iPad to check you out (you can get your receipt emailed... brilliant). Also worth noting - parking is easy peasy on the street directly in front and there's a lemonade of the day... I'm talking flavors like peach and watermelon. Do not pass this nectar of the gods up! Cute, kitschy, and I just may steal that vintage Orange Crush lunchbox next time I'm in. I kid!

Lunchbox Eats is a good place. They have plenty of parking, which is nice for a downtown place. They're off the beaten path of downtown, but finding them is no problem.........and believe me, you need to find them! The concept is simple, and delivered in fine fashion. There are cues that remind you of your elementary-school lunchroom. Meals are served on Lunch trays. Colorful straws, food ordering slips, and big-ass red pencils with erasers to fill out your food order slips. It's a nice idea, and they completely back up their relatively high-priced lunches with outstanding food. On my most recent visit, I had their homemade Lemonade with Caramelized Pineapple. Expensive, but outstanding. It came in a quart Mason Jar with a straw about the circumference of a dime. I'll bet Charlie Sheen wishes he had one of these straws the next time he goes off the grid with the Hookers and Cocaine! I've tried a lot of menu items, and it's all delicious. I can't recommend the Braised Short-Rib sandwich enough. It's one of the best sandwiches I've ever tasted! Recently, I ordered the Hamburger.......which is really a meatloaf sandwich with mashed potatoes, tomatoes and fried onion straws. Another Home Run, for sure. My most recent visit was with 5 friends. I tried some of their menu items, and every damn thing was creatively prepared and quite delicious. For dessert, we ordered one dish of the Donut Bread-Pudding. Then, we just passed it around the table and sampled it. Outstanding. We looked like a kennel of Basset Hounds trying to get Peanut Butter off the roof of our collective mouths. You just can't go wrong with ANY menu item. All of these were excellent.....Kale Chips, Mac & Cheese, Veggie Slaw, Chess Pie, Fried Brussel Sprouts, Chicken and Grids, and the Fried Avocado things. It's a little bit expensive. But it's all so damn good, you just sit there and take the hit.......kinda like grade school discipline. A unique and friendly place that's not to be missed. You'll like it!

This place was a lot of fun and very different! I love the idea of a restaurant modeled after childrens' lunch period. However, the food wasn't the best lunch I've had. It was good, but nothing special. Still glad we checked it out though! The games and the way you order your food made it a fun experience.

We hop around town for our staff meetings with lunch...Lunchbox Eats is the first place to get two weeks in a row--- with staff demanding it almost rabidly. I had the Leadership Mac & Pork club with a side of Eggplant fries...and almost died. In a city that is known for incredible execution on flavor, this place stands at the top of the list. Flavor combinations are beautiful, atmosphere is perfect, fun, and disarming, and the staff was all extremely friendly and knowledgeable. I look forward to more of Lunchbox Eats.

I seriously love this place for many reasons, which I will elaborate on below. The atmosphere here is great. Imagine a small, exposed brick high school cafeteria for grown ups, and that would be pretty close to the atmosphere here. The silver tables and school chairs really add to the "cafeteria" feel. Not to mention the big, elementary school style pencils that you fill out your order with. Fortunately, points are not taken off for spelling ;) Under the high tables that run the middle of the restaurant you will find a suprisingly thorough collection of boardgames, ranging from Scrabble to Connect Four to Don't Break the Ice. We have also always had no less than fantastic service here. You are always greeted with a warm (and more importantly for me, genuine) smile. Drink refills abound! And the wait time is never too long to recieve your food. Now on to the food. While I have been making comparisons to high school cafeterias thus far, there is definitely no comparison to make when it comes to the food. I've tried several of their main dishes, and while everything I have had has been fantastic, nothing quite compares to the deliciousness of the "Chick'n Grids." A sandwich that uses waffles as the bread, and beautifully breaded and fried chicken tenders as the filling. Cover those tenders with gruyere cheese, add some honey mustard, and you have yourself one of my favorite sandwiches of all time. Mmmm, I'm getting hungry just thinking about it. And their sides. THEIR SIDES!!! Everything is amazing. Their french fries are clearly fresh cut, and perfectly fried. The mac n' cheese. The mac n' cheese is, no joke, not an overexaggeration, seriously guys, straight faced, not messin' around, the best mac n' cheese I have had at a restaurant... and probably ever. Comes out in an individual serving with a golden brown crispy crust, and inside that crust is cheesy, gooey deliciousness. I also really enjoy their deep fried brussel sprouts. Yum. I recommend going as often as possible. Typically they are only open for lunch, but they open on the nights of Grizzlies and Tigers games as well. I highly recommend parking at Lunchbox Eats, having an amazing meal and hop, skip, jumping on over to the FedEx Forum for the game. Why spend 15 dollars on an overcooked hot dog and a soda, when you can have the best elevated soul food fare in the city for the same price?

I want to try everything on the menu. They have a daily lemonade served in huge mason jars with large, brightly colored straw. The special that day was passion fruit lemonade. DELISH. The food takes a while to come out, so if your in a rush.. no, don't go somewhere else, just get it to go! I had the Extra Curricula Portabella: "a playful take on a wellington, because this one is with only mushrooms! smoked portabella mushrooms piled with a soulful mixture of veggies, sandwiched between crispy phyllo dough joined with tomatoes and spouts." I got the chickpea crunch as a side. This went perfectly with the sandwich. My friends ordered the turkey burger w/ chickpea crunch and crawfish étoufée sliders w/ fried avocados. All of it was absolutely delicious. If you haven't been here yet, you need to go. I will be back to try every dish.

Wow. I think I just had the best sandwich of my life... I flew in to Memphis for a business trip in Arkansas. On my way I needed to stop and get lunch before my hunger caused me to bring out my Philly road rage on all these nice people down here. I checked yelp and this clearly seemed like the place to go. The inside is awesome. I think I has this exact chair in second grade. But let's get to the food.... As previously stated, I cannot remember ever having a better sandwich. I got the broken rib (spare ribs) and scarfed that bad boy down. I couldn't resist the bread pudding for dessert (ugh. I'll work out later). And it was fantastic as well. My waitress was also incredibly pleasant. Hopefully now that I'm full, I'll fit in with these kind and calm southern people

Really liked this place. They have a good location, a unique concept and eccentric detais to set themselves apart. The menu is great. I sampled the Turkey burger with Cornbread bun, the Chicken and Waffles and Chicken Strips. My only issue is its kinda tight, but that will be hard to fix without relocating. Good spot

I could wax pontifically about the food, but being on my phone I won't. Do yourself a solid... Come here. Eat. Fantastic.

Great place to stop for lunch downtown on a limited time budget! I had the "3rd Period Smoking Birds," kind of a terducken on toast. My choice of sauce, the green tomato relish, wasn't available, but the barbecue sauce was fine. Don't miss the eggplant fries with chipotle sauce. MMM!

Visited here with my sister and daughters. This is a tiny and quaint place. Kids had the pencil thin chicken and fries, honeydew melon lemonade of the day. We also had the macaroni and cheese and the turkey burger on cornbread. We LOVED the turkey burger and the macaroni and cheese was amazing. The lemonade was light and refreshing. Service was good and friendly. We would definitely go back! It does close as 3 PM, or else we may have had dinner here as well.

This is one of my favorite places to eat in Memphis! The food is phenomenal and the staff are some of the nicest people you will ever meet! I have had various items and all were great, but I always come back to the Chicken and Grids! Best sandwich ever! Also do not skip on the lemonade!

Even with a vegetarian diet, its still a great place to eat. The salad was perfect with the right mix of sour, sweet and crunchy items. It was also very nostalgic! If you are trying to find somewhere to eat near the Fed Ex forum (also open on game nights) then this is your place.

I have been here twice. First time was with about eight people from work. It was lunch and it took maybe a half an hour to get the food. That time, my chicken and grids were okay and the atmosphere was unique, so it was fun. My mac & cheese was not worth getting again-not even half as good as soul fish, which I consider the best and most consistent mac & cheese in the neighborhood. The second time, I was with my wife and we arrived at 2:40 PM on a Friday, which was 20 minutes before closing. The best way to sum it up was we were a burden to them. My wife's meatloaf arrived in about 60 seconds. Also, the fried onion curls should not have been served, as your guess is as good as mine as to when they were cooked. That's all we ordered, because they were out of broken ribs. In short, the service was pathetic and that the server showed only apathy towards us and what she was doing. PS. they were cleaning up the entire restaurant and putting stools on top of tables right after we sat down. And, there were two individuals already there at separate tables, So they weren't doing it solely for our benefit. If I didn't go back the second time, I probably would have given it three or four stars-maybe.

I'm currently traveling the south for interviews, but I'm treating it like a food tour. Memphis is only my second stop, but the rest of the cities have some work to do if they want to top Lunchbox. I am hard to please when it comes to food, and I only review restaurants that I really enjoy or find to be very off. So kudos to Lunchbox. I went with the Chicken and Grids, a side of Mac and Cheese, a piece of Pumpkin Pie and their Mango Lemonade. Each was fabulous! The decor is awesome and so are the people. It's a short walk past the FedEx Forum, but so worth it. I don't know how many times I'll be in Memphis, but this will be a regular stop for me.

Chicken Grids sandwich is the bomb. I ended up ordering the 2 birds something or another and hated it but I did get a bit of my husband's chicken waffle sandwich. If you stop in, chicken and waffles is the way to go. The squash casserole also sucked...why I didn't order the mac and cheese like everyone told me to is beyond me. The people are very friendly too. When we came in on a Sunday afternoon, we were the only folks in the restaurant, so service was super fast. Love the concept and the specialty drink served in the mason jar. It's huge too...love it. I would try this place again and go for a burger.

We did not enjoy our lunch at Lunchbox Eats. The overwhelming reason was that the entire place smelled of gas -- who knows what that was! My eyes were watering uncontrollably at the haziness of it. Not sure if this is a regular thing, or they were just having a problem that day. The food didn't blow me away. I loved the chicken and waffles, but my fish tacos were not my cup of tea ... I took one bite and then didn't touch them again. The theme was cute... although I'd have to say a little on the cheesy side.

Lunchbox Eats hit the spot, yo! The ambience and decor at Lunchbox Eats is what makes it so special. From the wall of books inside to the school bus complete with Isaac Hayes painted on the side of the building, this place has more charm than I thought was possible. And definitely more charm than I remember my schoolhouse having. They even had those giant pencils from first grade at your table to write down your order with! (Remember? The ones you probably used for handwriting assignments.) It was crazy busy around 1 p.m. on Friday afternoon, but I was able to grab a seat outside on their patio, which was decked out with gorgeous flowers. I asked for the blueberry lemonade (the special for that day), which I've heard is amazing, but they had already sold out for the day. Before I left, they had made a new batch of strawberry that I could take home with me. I had the Homeroom Chicken & Grids sandwich, which is basically a chicken and waffles sandwich topped with muenster cheese. Very heavy, but absolutely delicious. And the presentation made it even better. My waitress was very sweet and accommodating despite the fact she was one of two servers that day. They were completely bombarded, but she managed to keep a smile and wait on us as quickly as possible. I can't wait to go back and take my mom. This is a great spot to take a family member or a friend who is visiting from out of town. I give it an A+. (See what I did there?)

yea, this place is great. Just down the street from the Forum and small and quaint. I went on the weekend and it wasn't too busy. Pretty good food.

I met up with some longtime friends at Lunchbox Eats for a late lunch. Walking in, we were all struck by the clever theme of the place and the extent to which they had gone to execute it. I'd heard such rave reviews about the food and I was hungry so I was ready to get eating. I started with an Arnold Palmer with their sweet tea and massive-sized pineapple lemonade. I ordered the leadership mac and pork club. First off, there was a lot of bread, hence the club but the mac and cheese got lost in the bread. In fact, I had almost finished the sandwich before I realized that there was supposed to be mac and cheese in there! The pork was tender but it really needed the barbecue sauce which came on the side. Dipping the sandwich into the sauce made for delicious bites. The kale chips came to our table accidentally, as none of us ordered them and thank goodness we didn't. They were strange and tasteless. I tasted the chicken and waffles and the cheese really worked well on the waffle. The waitress' recommendation of the third period smoking birds with chicken, duck and turkey with slaw was probably the best of the three meals. Reminiscing with childhood friends in a lunchroom cafeteria atmosphere with quality food deserves a passing grade for Lunchbox Eats.

This place is awesome! Had it for the first time yesterday. The whole concept is great - from menu items to ruled paper menus to meals served on plastic school lunch trays. I think the uniqueness and creativity of the menu really sets it apart. Plus, the food is very good! I had a "chalkboard special" of the day, which was a crab grilled cheese. Ordered some avocado fries with that, and loved both. We sat outside because it wasn't too hot. Plus, they have misters on their patio to help keep it cooler. Really, the only bummer is its location. It's not hard to find or get to, but it's not something you're likely to drive by normally. So you need to remember it's there.

OMG, Lunchbox Eats, where have you been all my life? As someone who works in a school and gets approximately 7.3 minutes to eat lunch, I have not been able to eat here because they're only open for lunch. Until now. Ladies and gents, they're open late on Grizzlies game days. So, husband and I made the trip before the Grizzlies/Thunder game. I am so glad we did! This place is awesome! The inside looks like what a school cafeteria should be: chalkboard with specials and menu items, books galore, and board games on the tables to play while you wait. The menu: amazing. I had the chicken & grids, which was wonderful. Eggplant fries as a side item - tasty, although a bit soggy if not eaten quickly. Pickles made in-house? Flippin' awesome! Lemonade of the day was strawberry lemonade and totally yummy with a big ole straw in a huge mason jar. My husband had the Principal's office link, which he devoured in no time. He had the chickpea crunch, which was interesting and yummy (I stole a few). The staff is super friendly. I can't say enough good things about this place. The desserts looked so good. Sadly, I was too full to try one. Next time, I'll need to control my fat kid self so that I can have one. I ate every bite of my meal, and I'm not ashamed. For about what we would have spent at the Forum on mediocre re-heated food, we had a killer pre-game dinner. We got there around 5pm, and we were the only guests in the place. Seriously, just go. For those who said the area is sketchy... meh, it's really not that bad. You can see FedEx Forum from the front of the restaurant.

Delicious! Such a cute little place. I had the class valedictorian (So. Good.) with kale chips and the kiwi lemonade (lip smacking!), and my friend had the smoked something with the eggplant fries and the cantaloupe lemonade, and we split the sweet potato pie... Let me just say I have never liked sweet potato pie, but here I had two little sections! Overall a wonderful experience. The staff was nice too!

It's the most wonderful time of the year. Traffic around even the most mediocre collection of shops, an ever-dwindling bank account, and the hours of preparation for the speech that will convince your relatives that your life is interesting (no, that costume you bought for your cat doesn't count). Not to mention, Whole Foods is like an episode of Survivor for a whole week. Honestly, I just want some cheese! Those relatives you're embellishing for, they are just as annoyed as you. They had to travel with all the other stressed out family members that managed to escape the nest, and now have to return with presents. It's a vicious cycle. The only way to save your relatives is to remind them of why home is such a wonderful place to be... if you are in Memphis, that means some delicious soul food, and I've got the perfect place for you: Lunchbox Eats... (for more pictures and descriptions, check out my blog post)

Lunchbox has officially wormed its way into my top 5 favorite Memphis spots. I took my husband here today for his first visit, and judging by the animalistic sounds he made while chowing down on the 3rd Period Smoking Birds sandwich (smoked turkey and duck with veggie slaw on homemade wheat toast) mac & cheese and homemade fries, I'm gonna guess he's a huge fan as well. They have a lemonade of the day, and today it was pineapple. So delicious, and so obvious that it is homemade each morning. Today I tried their Holiday Break Chicken (their very own chicken salad served on toasted cornbread) and opted again for that to-die-for mac & cheese. The toasted corn muffin was so good I found myself questioning why I haven't eaten all my chicken salad atop their corny goodness. I had a few bites of my husband's sandwich and that turkey and duck combo sandwiched between the toasty, warm wheat bread was ridiculous. The portion sizes here are huge, so dessert was not an option. We took some peach cobbler to go and it was a delightful end to our dinner this evening. I have nothing bad to say about Lunchbox Eats. I hope the rest of Memphis has caught onto this hidden gem.

Cute spot. Decent parking, which was a bonus! I had the "Principal's Office Link," which is a grilled cheese with fried egg and hot link sausage. It is hands down "The Best Sandwich I Have Ever Eaten." The runny egg yolk made the sandwich so rich that had it not also been so delicious, I wouldn't have been able to finish it. The bread was perfectly toasted, and the sausage was spicy enough to stand out from everything else. YUM!!! D had the "Graduation Burger." He really liked it, and it looked great. (I only eat meatloaf the way my mom made it, so I'm not a fair judge of anything with meatloaf on it anywhere else...) The fries appeared to be hand cut, and even if they weren't, they sure tasted like it. They were hot and crispy and just salty enough. My only complaint was about dessert-I got some cookies bagged up to go, and I'm afraid they were just frozen Otis Spunkmeyer. I was really hoping for some home-baked treats to cap off my otherwise perfect meal. I guess I'll just try something else next time. Because there WILL be a next time!

I just heard about Lunchbox Eats at a business meeting this week, so I decided to give it a try. I was pleasantly surprised. The atmosphere is festive and it has a unique education theme, thus the name. I like the projector screen on the wall which gives it a little sports bar feel. Unfortunately, they had sold out of the Class Turkey Burger, so I tried the chicken salad and fries. The fries with seasoning is one of the best I have ever had. I had my order to go and I asked the server did she have any salt and she gave me a look and said no sir. Now I know why I received the look, because the fries seasoning is great. The chicken salad was delicious. I like how they prepared traditional food with a non traditional presentation. This will be one of my new lunch spots. The only reason I gave them four stars is because my wait time was longer than I expected, but it was lunch time. They would really be packed if they did more marketing!

Lunchbox Eats is another one of those "This is the best place ever... so delicious... we have to go.. it is one of my favorites...". Being the awesome friend that I am, I decided to give it a try. First off, I would have never went here on my own, the location was sketchy at best. The restaurant was adorable though, had a nice patio area then you walk through the doors into an adorable brick room, with tables everywhere. I loved all of the retro school decor and the chalk board menu. The giant projector tv wasn't bad either. But then our food was delivered. The food was delivered school cafeteria style in slotted trays, which I found adorable. Maybe I am just not the type for gourmet sandwiches, maybe I ordered the wrong thing (some bird sandwich), a redeeming factor was the relish on it, that should be bottled and sold, it was tasty. The mac and cheese wasn't my favorite, it was mushy and could have used some salt or pepper or something. There was a group there that had something catered, or sampling the catering menu, I am not sure, but I was ready to join their table, it looked delicious. Needless to say, Kyle was personally offended I was not one of his favorite restaurants biggest fans and wouldn't talk to me for a couple hours, childish, I know, but you don't mess with this mans food! I would be willing to try this place again, the pineapple lemonade was amazing.

Found this spot when using the Yelp App to find a spot for a late lunch. The reviews looked great and the menu yummy. Everything here is based on a "school" theme hence the clever names of the menu items (as well as the restaurant name itself). The interior is pleasant with individual tables and a communal table as well. Daily specials appear on a chalkboard. You can play classic games while you wait (I kicked my husband's butt at Connect-4). While the decor may be playful schoolhouse the food is anything but elementary -- nice elevated sandwich theme that is anything but boring and routine. I had the Broken Rib Bones Sandwich (amazing -- Red Wine Braised Short Ribs of Beef, smothered with Gravy, Onions, Carrots and Celery between Crispy Grilled Cheese ) and the hubby enjoyed the 3rd Period Smoking Birds ( Slow smoked Black Cherry Wood pulled Cajun Turkey, Molasses Chicken Succulent Duck and Veggie Slaw are stacked on Fresh Baked Wheat Bread served with Tri-Bird Pan Liquor, choice of BBQ Sauce or Green Tomato Relish). Lemonade of the day came in a huge serving mason jar - could have definitely split it with the hubby. I didn't find the area to be sketchy. Prices were fair for the quality of the sandwiches.

Went for a business lunch today and absolutely loved the food. I had the Leadership Mac and Pork Club. Just imagine your favorite comfort foods in between three slices of homemade bread. It's that good! And a mason jar of watermelon lemonade to go with it. I will be going back to try every sandwich on the menu.
