Last week I was craving Mexican Wedding Cakes (cookies) and I really didn't feel like making them myself. I didn't need an entire recipe of 2 and a 1/2 dozen cookies for myself. I only wanted a few cookies to kill the craving for good. And maybe have a few more to share... maybe. Thank goodness for Kerry C's review or else I would never have known about Kay Bakery. It's not highly visible from Summer Ave so it's not like I would have stumbled upon it myself. Armed with the address I found it with no problem. I'm so glad I decided to give in to my pesky craving and visit Kay Bakery. It's not a fancy place but they do have a wide selection of yummy looking baked goods. I however, can only speak for the Wedding Cakes... that's what I was after and that's what I got. The man behind the counter was perfectly lovey. I asked for one dozen cookies and I watched as he carefully placed each cookie in a paper bag. The cost? $3.99 A total bargain! The taste and texture? Perfect! The craving? GONE!

After a recent breakfast at the Pancake Shop, a bakery across the street caught my eye. It looked like an old-school Memphis bakery with a Hispanic twist. It looked so interesting that I had to go in (that, and because I'm a total sucker for baked goods). As it turns out, I was right. Kay Bakery is a place where the old is colliding with the new. All of the cases have ancient sliding glass doors and some of the white model cakes on the top shelf are yellowing with age. Inside the cases, classic danishes, rolls, cookies and creme horns share shelf space with exotic Mexican pastries. Across the room, international phone cards hang on the wall and bins of plastic cake toppers labeled "Dora the Explorer" and "Grim Reaper" are stacked behind the counter. The cookie case is full of wedding cookies and those fabulous not-too-sweet iced cookies. I picked up two empanada-style pastries with apple and strawberry filling, a cookie with sprinkles, and a cinnamon-covered pastry cup filled with apples. The shell of the pastry was super fresh, not too thick, and had just a hint of sweetness. Inside, the hollow pastry had a layer of thick, sweet strawberry jelly lining one side. All of the pastries that I've tried from Kay Bakery have been incredibly fresh. They're also incredibly inexpensive. My four-pastry haul rang up to $3.50. Kay Bakery also sells bread, and the items in the bakery cases change daily. When you get there, grab one of the big flat metal trays and a pair of tongs and load up on deliciousness, both familiar and exotic.

I love this place! The pastries are always fresh and cheap. I try to stop before heading to work, so i pick up some yummies for my coworkers. The day old bags are great as well. The staff is very friendly and helpful. I can't stop raving about this place.

Went to this place on a whim to pick up a birthday cake for my husband - it was the ONLY bakery I could find open on a Sunday that was not part of a grocery chain. The sweet young lady behind the counter offered me a tres leches birthday cake that looked sumptuous. We also got a dozen wedding cake cookies for the low low price of $3.99. The cake was beyond amazingly delicious and the cookies were divine. This low key place is a treasure! We will definitely be back!

Love this bakery! They have great, current, kids-themed cakes and they are always ready at the promised time. I always get compliments when I order their cakes for birthdays and their in-store desserts (GREAT prices) are a hit as well. I love local bakeries and this is my go-to in Memphis for birthdays.

Delicious pastries and muffins. We arrived around 11am & the muffins were still warm! Definitely a little different than what we're used to, but you grab a tray and load it up with your choices then bring it to the register where the girl boxes it up for you. There are chocolate covered cake type things in the fridge that my boyfriend went crazy for. They're like hostess cupcakes but fresh and way better! So amazing. Too bad we don't live here, otherwise it'd be a weekly treat. We loved it! So inexpensive as well! A ton of treats for $11. Can't go wrong!!! Must go here!!!

Oh my! At my last sorority alumnae event there was a very dramatic story of a fancy cookie shop in town offering terrible service and this place came up as the place to go instead. Deciding it would be best to give it a try before ordering a bunch of painted cookies I stopped in this afternoon. Wow! Lets just say I got stuff to take to a friends tomorrow and I'll need to go back bc it all got eaten at my house. Oops! They have a good variety of pastries, not all recognizable to me. There's also a cold case with petit fours and eclairs and then a case of cookies. They also do special orders, cookies are $1.10 each . . . What ?!????! Apparently some people are afraid of this neighborhood, please it's right up the road from very fancy East Memphis homes where said people may live. You're missing out by not going, I'm so glad to be in the know even if its more temptation I don't need.

This place does NOT mess around when it comes to pastries! I came here with my girlfriend for the first time a few months ago and we've been frequenting this plane rather often ever since. They have a wide array of pastries and baked goods for really low prices (and I mean REALLY low) and they are all pretty darn good. The girlfriend and I are both huge fans of the chocolate drop cookies there, and frankly might be addicted. I also noticed they have a wide selection of custom cakes you can order with lots of different designs for low prices as well, so if you're looking to do an epic birthday cake for cheap, this is your spot. Kay Bakery is tucked away on a street called Avon right off of Summer; it can be hard to find and some people apparently think the area is sketchy (it's not), but I highly recommend taking the time to stop by and give these guys a try; you'll be glad you did!

I purchased a buttercream cake 2 years ago, and it was one of the greatest cakes ever. but on March 24th I purchased another buttercream cake. my husband picked it up and brought it home knowing that is my favorite cake. unfortunately upon opening the box, the cake has fallen slightly on one side, but wasn't that great big of a deal. cut into the cake and it was almost as if it were stale and it was not buttercream. to me this place has severely went down the tube I would rather drive all the way to Alabama to purchase a Publix cake, I know at least there I can get a good cake still. will never go to K bakery again.

Everyone seems to love Kay Bakery. I sure did. Growing up, Kay and Mary Carter both stand out in my mind as places my mother took us to quite frequently. I was in the area last week helping my husband with some work and whipped into Kay's to treat my daughter. (Lord help her, she'd been so patient) Kay (for some time now, I'm sure) is now owned by a Hispanic family. There are still cookies, cupcakes, and petit fours to be had. (The petit fours were most recently featured in the Playbook's "Best Bets") In addition, I saw many items that I was unfamiliar with, but looked tempting, nonetheless. Service is bilingual. Some items are self-serve, some are gotten for you. I observed flies in the case where the employee-served cookies and other items were kept. Needless to say, we passed on goodies. Kays will always invoke warm and fuzzy memories of my childhood. I don't think I'll return, though, to make new memories for my daughter. Like so many other things, it isn't what it used to be.
