I love it here! I get what I want quickly and with a smile. I can spread out and practice Mandarin drills, write in my journal, admire the wide variety of furniture pieces, plug into my phone and hear my tunes while I read. It is a comfortable hangout and a great place for coffee, tea, sweets, private time, or gatherings.

Went there the other day and OMG I loved it! Got a mocha frappe and it put Starbucks to shame! Plus the environment is quirky and totally midtown cool! Def will be back..ESP to try the Pistachio Frappe!!!

Amazing, unique, Delicious coffees at great prices. You will love the atmosphere and the food, and the owner is super sweet. With local music and shopping it's a great place to eat!

All can I say is truly WOW! I came to Memphis to work like a nanny for a nice family in this neighborhood and I was lucky to have Java Cabana right around the corner! I didt knew anyone here till I came to Java and made all my friends. Everyone here is so lovely and welcoming. The drinks are so unique and special also. Nothing compares. This cafe made me love my stay in Memphis because it gave me something to look forward to everyday! :) If you are new for Memphis and want to find a place to warm your welcome pleace Java is your friend! I love Java Cabana.

This place was so unique and great to chill and get work done! Chai latte was great too!

Was desperate for coffee so came here. Not sure how I feel about this place. The woman working at the counter was on the phone for a while and there was quite a few people that had come and gotten in line at that point. The coffee was pretty strong, which isn't necessarily bad but just wasn't what I was expecting when I asked for the caramel latte. The only thing "caramel" about it was a little bit of caramel that had settled into the bottom of the cup. Other than that, very strong coffee.

It's quite an interesting place. As some other reviewers said, it's pretty "hipster" with an eclectic 60s vibe. I ordered an iced coffee which was served in a mason jar. I'd give the coffee 5 stars; however, it felt like you had to be a regular to really enjoy being there (it was my first time) which is why I gave it 3 stars. I also went on a Thursday which was open mic night. I went there to try out a new potential study spot, but it wasn't the greatest place to study (with it being open mic night and all). Overall, I would go back because the coffee was good and the rest of the menu looked good; however, I would go not to study, but rather as a place to meet a friend for a coffee.

Love this place! My daughter demands hot chocolate from there every time we are in the area. Their soy cappuccino is wonderful too. Very cool vibe and fun band on the weekend.

Super-cute coffee shop alert! Admittedly, the word "cute" is just about as overused as "cool" and "nice," but I can't think of a better word to describe this homey (yikes, also overused. I need a thesaurus!) place. It's chock full of slightly shabby 1950s tables and chairs, a few couches and stuff everywhere. Like in the front, they even sell second hand clothes (not too many so as to make this place seem like a musty attic, though). I had several hours before I was flying out of town one frigid, rainy afternoon last week and finding this place on Yelp was a godsend. I had been eating lunch at my favorite vegan cafe down the block, but needed working wifi and a warmer place to cozy up to. Don't expect frills, just a decent cup of coffee or espresso. They have almond milk, but charge extra for it (c'mon, it's not that much more money than milk or half & half), so the cost of my latte was kinda steep. They also have food, but I can't report on that. At that odd hour of the afternoon, I was the only person in there, which I like. No begging to share outlets, get my drift? Oh and they are open late. I hear some good musicians have gotten their start here at their open mike nights. Old school coffee houses are a dying breed, so support your local places like this one, friends!

This a vintage home like coffee shop. It's locally owned...and they provide great service and offer a wide variety of drinks that you can never go wrong with!! I recommend this place to anyone that wants to grab a quick cup of coffee or sit in for little bit, cause it makes a great study place!!
(5)Blake B.
The coffee used to be great. In recent years, they have gone downhill. Not impressed anymore.

Comfortably ethereal describes my visit to the Java Cabana. I walked from my house on a warm spring day to find a few gentlemen outside the open door murmuring into the sound of another gentleman's guitar playing. As if that didn't set the laid back mood enough, the sea of posters, string lights, and paintings outside just put me in a good mood. I entered and there was a group of 3 in front of me. While I waited, I took a gander at the hand-written sign overhead which detailed the drinks and prices. Most drinks are available in two sizes. I made my way to the counter and ordered an iced hazelnut latte, a drink only available in the larger size (if you're a Starbucks whore like I was, it's about like a grande). The barista asked if I wanted my drink for here or to-go - I ordered to go. My total I think was $4.02 and I left the change from $5.00 plus an extra dollar in the tip jar which read, "I love tips" ....who doesn't ? :) Then, I sat down. That's when the atmosphere hit me. The eclectic yet strangely relaxing combination of 1950's French music and old mis-matched furniture was very soothing. It may have been the most laid-back and relaxing place I've ever been. Out-dated flyers and a plethora awesome junk adorned the walls. Before I knew it, my coffee was brought out to me. My hazelnut latte was very good. I do wish they had a bigger size, though (BAD Starbucks whore, BAD!) It's worth mentioning that although I did soak up the great atmosphere, around 7 minutes passed before my coffee was made. It seemed like only a minute or two to me, but that may have been very different if I were in a rush. There barista also was flying solo, making drinks and taking orders. I hear they have free wifi but I think you have to Ask for the password. In short: great atmosphere, great service, great coffee . Non-pretentious and laid back. Go here.

The woman working was amazingly nice and accommodating and everything my friends and I had was amazing. Personally, I got the kiwi milkshake what was just the perfect size and it tasted great. The atmosphere was just too cute and they have live, local bands in there most weekends. Definitely a place to check out!
(5)Ana-Shea F.
I love absolutely everything here. The lady that owns this business is phenomenal, the atmosphere is really relaxed, and they have the best chai and vegetable paninis in the city. As a local, I come here often for a light lunch and some reading time. Love, love, love it here.
(5)Sally C.
Love this place soooooo much! Though I've only been twice, sadly, the coffee and atmosphere are very nice and cozy. Also, it's easy to get to, in a great neighborhood, and the staff are very friendly! Favorite coffee place in Memphis right now.
(4)Chris C.
I wanted to like this place much more than I actually did. The espresso is just not good. I've come back multiple times hoping I just had a bad day, but it's always the same. It's overly bitter and doesn't have any real flavor in it. The foam is usually a bit of a mess and it leads to the flavor being unbalanced. The coffee was Ugly Mug, which is good, but they didn't have any special options for it. The lady who's making the drinks and has been there every time I've been in is really nice, but the clientele has been a little aloof, which is unusual for coffeeshops in Memphis.
(3)Grace G.
Very interesting, eclectic coffee shop. Other reviews noted how it seemed unclean, but I don't catch that vibe at all. There are several funky tables with mismatched chairs scattered around the space. My only critique would be their staffing. The girl who took my order, while sweet, was the only one on the kitchen. I ordered 2 breakfast sandwiches but instead of working on them immediately she had to attend to the other customers in line. This is understandable, but they would really benefit from having more than one person on staff. Our egg & cheese bagels were pretty horrible. Soggy, tasteless. I'm not sure how you mess up eggs, but it happened.
(3)Joelle P.
Oh my goodness, this is the cutest coffee shop ever! I love the eclectic, mismatched furniture and the food is out of the world. Then again, I expect nothing less from the entire Cooper-Young district. You must have to pass some sort of cool test just to open a restaurant there. I went to meet a business contact there and thought it was just a coffee shop, but as soon as I saw "grilled cheese" plastered on the wall, I had to order it. And it didn't disappoint - at all. And I wasn't even hungry! After chatting with the owner for awhile, I discovered that they also play music and have poetry readings - officially on the to do list! Definitely a hole in the wall, but in the best way possible.

Cool place with good coffee and menu. Unfortunately we came in the middle of a "shift swap" and had to stand and wait for several minutes while the staff we're talking and discussing behind the counter.
(3)Shu J.
Meant to finish this review a couple months ago. It was okay. Just okay. My friend and I got iced coffees which were good and refreshing. My review would be higher but the space could be more clean and organized and less dingy. I get that the mismatched and old furniture is supposed to denote an artsy + vintage vibe, but I felt some things in the shop needed a proper scrub-down. The kitchen also looks like it needs some love, and I want to be able to trust where my food + drink is being prepared. That said, the vibe is nice, service is friendly, and this unique shop does add to the cool character of the neighborhood.

I came here for breakfast this morning around 9 am when it opened. The coffee house was void of costumers when we arrived and the barista was stand off-ish. I ordered a Sweet Jane(caramel sauce, vanilla, double espresso, steamed milk, and whipped creme) with a buttered bagel, and my friend ordered an Iced Chai Tea with the Sassy Omelette. The drinks took long to arrive, and the food even longer (...why did my bagel take 10 minutes?). Although the service was poor, the food and drinks were pretty good. The prices were also cheap and the Cooper-Young area is an interesting place to walk around, so it was worth the trip.
(4)Jeremy W.
Nice place, intimate and quintessential cooper/young flare. Local art and local music. I do prefer a little more space however, this place is nice but really small, on purpose I'm sure. Only a couple of tables. Coffee is average, go here for small coffee shop ambiance only. Owner and staff are friendly.

Having recently returned to my home town after a twelve year hiatus, I am thrilled to discover that Java Cabana has preserved its integrity and charm as a community center. Its homespun, kitsch-vintage ambience and warm staff always give me a pick-me-up. It's a sweet spot to anonymously concentrate on work while sharing my peripheral space with others... or a pleasant respite from said work in conversation with friendly and interesting people. The atmosphere is unpretentious and homey, and the drink menu is tantalizing. Java is the only place in town where I can sip a perfect almond steamer from a turquoise mug large enough to fit my entire face into (which comes in handy for getting to the cinnamon goodness that settles at the bottom of the cup). The Lisa Marie (a decadent combo of cocoa, dark roast coffee, raspberry syrup and whipped cream) is a perfect antidote for that blustery day when you thought you'd rather be in bed. The added sprinkles delight my inner five-year-old to no end. They make a mean breve as well...and the quesadillas have been known to foster addiction in vegetarians and non-vegetarians alike. The owner has a nose for talent, which is evident in her choice of entertainment; she hosts an Open Mic Night on Thursdays for local luminaries (original poetry and songs with not a single cover tune to suffer through, thank you sweet Jesus) as well as inspiring performances by some incredibly talented national and international wayfarers. This place is definitely worth checking out!

The atmosphere is very relaxed. The coffee is delicious. I had the django which was coffee and hot chocolate with whip cream and sprinkles. It was so good. I would recommend it if you are looking for some place small and relaxing to to sip your favorite blend.

4.5 stars - Stopped in after a business meeting by the airport. Candidly, I second guessed my choice when I pulled up (it didn't look like a sport coat & tie type of place), but I'm very glad I stopped. Took in the notebook and knocked out some E-mail while loving the very groovy atmosphere, tearing into a muffin, and finishing a most excellent latte. Forget Graceland, skip the Peabody Ducks, be sure to visit Java Cabana.

I really love this coffee shop-- cute interior, reliable wifi, welcoming staff, really good coffee. They seem open to new customers. They also serve almond milk and vegan treats for all those non milk drinkers. tips are welcome but not expected. I have usually gotten the drip coffee but am going to try espresso drinks soon. Prices are good-- a little less than Starbucks. I definitely recommend!

I'm pretty sure that this is my favorite little place to hide away with a cup of a tea in Memphis. There's so much to look at, the prices are reasonable, it's just great. Whoever decorates the place with little odds and ends does a great job. I ordered green tea and they serve you a mug with a little ceramic tea kettle to serve yourself. I got maybe three-ish mugs full of tea for a little under $3.00. Plus, they have open mics on Thursday nights from 8-10 p.m.. I enjoy reading the Jenga pieces, there's always a funny saying or ten on them.

In a quest to set up camp (aka my virtual office) in every coffee shop in town, I held Yelp Office Hours here today. My husband, 1 month old son and I spent a couple hours here mingling with some yelpers. While I have always loved the Cabana, I had always thought that it would prove to be an oddly unsettling place to work. It's tiny and a bit cramped with fabulous vintage furniture and crazy, bold, stimulating colors on the walls. I didn't think I'd be able to concentrate on much other than people watching (one of my favorite past times) and wishing and dreaming I had some of that fabulous furniture in my own home. Today proved me wrong, and I am oh so very glad it did. I was so comfortable in here- in fact, I felt like I was in a friend's living room. Something about the mid-afternoon ambiance to this little spot coupled with the fantastic soundtrack playing in the background just made me feel oh so homey. I finally got to try some food menu items today. I opted for the veggie quesadilla- black beans, fresh spinach and cheese inside a spinach flavored tortilla shell served with spicy salsa. It was pretty freaking stellar. Though I'll advise you not to order yours with the hazelnut latte like I did. Poor flavor combining on my part- regardless both were delicious. My husband introduced me to my new favorite Cabana coffee concoction today- the Funky Monkey. It tasted like chocolate covered frozen bananas with whipped cream swimming on top. I never would have thought banana syrup would play well with coffee, but boy was I wrong. Simply divine. Had I not been on latte number 3, I might have ordered my very own. I'll definitely be making the Cabana a regular stop when it comes to setting up my virtual office. Working from home means it is key to get out and experience some different locale. Java didn't disappoint today, as an added bonus the little guy seemed to enjoy himself as well and was surprisingly well behaved. I'll make a coffee junkie outta him yet!

Want to increase your cool factor? Stop in Cooper-Young's Java Cabana. It's an artsy, ultra-hip little coffee shop loved and frequented by Midtowners. And they have very good coffee. I like the Cappuccino Espresso with a Biscotti. But if you're feeling like something a little different, try one of their Vegan Cookies. They are really quite tasty. Open mike poetry readings are every Thursday at 8pm, all they ask is to "bring your heart with you".
(4)Tanya T.
Java Cabana is a cool little coffee shop, and one of the first actual coffeehouses to open in Memphis, I believe. The coffee is good. Like the kind of good you see in coffee commercials when the woman takes a sip with her eyes closed and just relishes the roasted coffee bean yumminess. That kind of good. The place itself is pretty colorful and cozy- I like that they have books out in the open for anyone to pick up and read. There are often live poetry readings and live music featured so stop in for some arts and entertainment if you're in the neighborhood.
(4)Adrienne R.
Best neighborhood coffee shop in Memphis, hands down! The owner is amazingly sweet and personable. She welcomes everyone into her cozy shop, pours lots of love into her unique and delicious sips and eats, and encourages you to stay as long as you want while you enjoy the free wi-fi. My favorite drink is the almond mocha with soy and her brownies are TO DIE FOR! Don't forget to grab a bag of Groovy Foods Dark Star chocolate granola before you walk out the door. It will change your life!
(5)Anna M.
This place has a great, welcoming, bohemian-ish vibe, and the food and drinks are better than most. The woman working there today just started recently, and I'm not sure if the chai milkshake/frappe is the way they usually make it, but it totally should be because WOW, what a drink! They have live music some nights, too. Very cool place to just sit and relax.
(5)Binh L.
This is the kind of cafe I crave to be in every city I ever want to reside in. Homey, non-pretentious, free wifi, and just comfortable. I love that they use mugs for their beverages. They have such a wide variety (even to accommodate my lactose-intolerant self) and food. There is space, music, and just a great place to relax. Java Cabana, you have spoiled me.
(5)Whitney A.
My husband and I came in here to rest from the heat for a bit. I got an iced tea and he got a french soda. I originally wanted an Italian soda but they were out of soda water - which is a bummer because that's kind of the best part isn't it? :( Anyway, the atmosphere of the place is awesome. Second hand store style, very comfy and interesting. The staff could've been better. But it's Midtown, what do you expect? I would go here again as long as it's during a slow part of the day.
(4)Seth W.
A fun coffee cabana that serves up not only a good brew but a serving of eclectic music and artistic talent from local musicians and poets. A nice choice for anyone looking for that great local coffee shop.
(4)David C.
Fantastic strong coffee, free Wifi, quiet, laid back. Odd hours, though, and they seem proud of it.
(4)dan d.
Old sofas, board games, art for sale... everything you could want in a coffee shop. I'll be spending more time here on my next visit to Memphis.
(5)David M.
A cozy little coffee shop. Great coffee, sodas and snacks. Java Cabana is also a popular place for live music, poetry readings and the like. Free Wi-Fi, its a great place to stop and re-charge your (laptop) batteries and check your e-mail. The service is always fast and friendly.
(5)Jonathan J.
Where coffee fans go. Friendly, chill staff. F***ing delicious coffee! They have live bands many night.
