So after living my whole life in Memphis, I finally got Jack Pirtle's fried chicken for the first time today. I'll now refer to that span as The Lost Years. The whole "like grandma's" shtick is so overused, I hate to admit that Pirtle's fried chicken does indeed taste suspiciously like the kind my Gran served us when I was growing up (or maybe Gran simply had Pops make a Pirtle's run before we arrived?). I like Uncle Lou's for the sauce and Gus's for the extra spicy "fried chicken on steroids" experience (or maybe that's KFC). But Pirtle's is just plain ol' crispy, well- but not over-seasoned fried chicken; in other words, it's darn near perfect. It's pretty cheap, too. And the 2520 Mt. Moriah store is like 5 minutes from the house. Dang.

Chicken is the best for a local chain. The gravy should be a beverage. If their biscuit was great I would have given it a 5 star! Today I had chicken fried steak sandwich! Boy o Boy. It ain't right but it's o so good. Don't try to eat here everyday. It will kill you. But when you need comfort fast head on over. This place is awesome!!!

Growing up in Sherwood Forest, we always frequented the Jack Pirtle's on South Highland. Oh, how I love that chicken. Oh, how I love the gravy that comes with it that's like crack when you dip your fries in it. As an adult, that same adoration applies. It's just good chicken, ya'll. Nice and peppery.....and it doesn't just stop at fried chicken. They also have hamburgers, hot dogs, a steak sandwich, and fried chicken gizzards. Got kids? If you print out a coloring page, have your little ones color and bring it in, they get a free meal. My only complaint or lamentation is that, like Tops, there is not one near me.

The worst restaurant I have EVER been to. My fiancé and I We're trying to get some quick Memphis fried chicken for dinner so we googled a place to go and found good reviews about Jack pirtles. My fiancé has a peanut allegory and in the south peanut oil Is used a lot so we asked to make sure. After we asked the lady never came back to take our order. So after 10 minutes we Drove to the window. We waited for Someone to come take our Oder and no one did, STILL! I asked the woman behind us if the lady took her order, and lo and behold she did. I went inside and was absolutely disgusted. Everything was dirty and greasy and so unclean. I can't believe I even wanted to eat there. So, When we finally saw a person they told use we owed 7.73. I told her we didn't order because she never came back to the speaker and she just looked dumbfounded. Needless to say we left. DO NOT EAT THERE. Go to central BBQ or anywhere else.

I wanted to jump on the Pirtle's bandwagon. Very good chicken. Good steak sandwich. Good gravy. Back when I was poor, I would get a dozen biscuits and large gravy. I'd dunk them jokers like oreos. Talk about good and good for you! I have not yet had a heart attack. Yet. If you're going to eat fried chicken from a place with a drive through, skip the national chains and get yourself some good, local flavor.

Love the place... this goes way back to my childhood! Just a couple years! Lol only reason I didn't give it 5 star was cleanliness.

AWESOME chicken! Their chicken is more of the variety of the pressure cooked chicken, although I think it IS fried. It reminds me of KFC's OG recipe chicken except better. You really can't compare this to fried chicken because it's in a different class, but overall for fried chicken this is definitely one of the best fried chicken I've ever had. The rest of the food is so-so. Their biscuits are mini-biscuits and are kind of doughy and dense; they weren't very buttery, but are interestingly good nonetheless. I also had the chicken livers; they need just a tad bit more breading. If all of the sides were as banging as the chicken was, then this place would have gotten 5 stars. Try: The chicken! Definitely a 5/5.

This is a Memphis treasure. My fondest childhood memories consist of Jack Pirtles and Overton Park.

Today was the first time i tried Jack Pirtle's (aka Barnyard Pimp). i have to say that i like it better than KFC. The fried chicken crust is like the kfc original recipe crust. i don't think they marinate or brine the chicken like kfc. the chicken meat itself is super moist. The service is definitely better than KFC where they act like they are doing you a favor by waiting on you. The gravy is good and peppery. The biscuits are okay. Definitely just a mode to get the gravy in your mouth. The mt. moriah location is close to us and we will definitely be going there more often. Heard the steak sandwich and the "real" fried chicken sandwich are good. Also, the prices are much cheaper than KFC (mr. pirtle doesn't spend money on the decor but it's clean-95 on the health inspection score). Definitely, more comfort food than fast food. All in all, if you want some budget friendly fried chicken that reminds you of grandma, this is it. Try it, it may surprise you.

For my money, Jack Pirtle's has the best fried chicken in the city of Memphis. I do not know what they do, but no other fried chicken I have had compares to it. The breading is not super crispy, and is in fact soggy at times, but it does not matter. The thing that sets the chicken apart from others in the area is the gravy that comes with it. When you order, get an extra gravy to go along with your chicken and fries, which are elevated to a whole new world when dipped into the gravy. You can literally drink the gravy from the cup it is so good. The only down side to Jack Pirtle's is that every location in the city is in a bad neighborhood, so be careful and only go during lunch hours.

The BEST Fried Chicken and Rice and Gravy that I have ever tried. I even tried Fried Gizzards (a first for me) and surprisingly even that was good... If you are ever in Memphis, then give this place a try!
