Now this is a restaurant i would come back all the time, the food is amazing .. The servers are very profesional pending to every lil detail, the place is beautiful i love it. I go here for a special occasion with my husband in my opinion one of the best experiences

So I've been meaning to write something about Houston's for a while as I should seeing as how I check in here so often. So why is this one of my favorite restaurants in Memphis? Simply put in one word: Consistent. It is the type of place that almost anything that is ordered tastes good. It doesn't make anything that will wow you but it never makes you feel like gosh that was disappointing. It is a great atmosphere and a great place to take guests as well as celebrate with family. So what do I order at Houston's? Well I love the Double Cut Pork Chop and Hawaiian Ribeye. The Rotisserie Chicken and Prime Rib are good as well and I would definitely pair it with the Emerald Kale Salad for a side. Today I saw something new on the menu so we had to try the St. Charles Oysters and they were really good. All in all there are some great things about Houston's. All of which keep me coming back. The low light ambiance. The friendly staff. The consistently good food. Now all that's left is to see if I can consistently hold onto my "dukedom" here. I hope you all enjoy Houston's as I do.

I don't think I've ever received such consistently good food. I started going here over ten years ago and the thai steak noodles are just as delicious today as they ever were. I've never ordered a bad thing on the menu. The service is always excellent and the mood/lighting is nice for a date. The only bad thing I have to say is that I would never go here on a weekend night or a holiday - you'd be waiting at the door (no, the bar would be overflowing too) for an hour or so. I go here for a special occasion...on a Tuesday night!
(5)Chris M.
Used to go here a lot in the past but the last few times were so bad I haven't been back in a long while. This place used to be all about great service and food. The last few times both sucked. The tenders, Hawaiian ribeye, etc can be good but have not been on my last few trips.
(2)Corey E.
I always leave Houston's happy. Their steaks are excellent and the atmosphere here is very nice and cozy with dim lighting and comfortable seating. The one downer is that the menu isn't that extensive and their aren't a lot of choices however the items that are on the menu are very good. I had the Hawaiian boneless steak with a baked potato. I usually have my steaks prepared medium well as the picture will reflect. I can honestly say that this is one of the best steaks I've had. I definitely will come back and recommend for you to come if you haven't been. Enjoy.

This is one of my grown to love spots! I've been here on a few of my outing with friends but it never hit me that I should do a review until now! The wait was pretty long but the food is great! I guess the only down fall is the unlimited refill you can only get two and after that you pay for the 3rd drink! Water is always good!!
(4)Laura Y.
This is literally a J Alexander just a slight different menu. The prime rib cost $32 here and $28 at J Alex. And it taste the same. They even serve water in a chilled glass with no ice, wait staff same outfits, same open kitchen, same bar area, all same as J Alex. If you ate at j alex about 8 years ago you might remember the sugar container a round silver object well guess who has them yep this place. As for the food I only had the bean burger and it's not bad the fries are better at j Alex and the prime rib is good. Brownie was just ok. I would not order again.
(3)Tanisha P.
I don't have anything negative to say about this place. Let me start off by saying I shoved a lot of tasty things in my mouth and I should be ashamed but I'm not. Best smoked salmon I have ever had hands down. The flavor was fabulous! I also had the pleasure of sampling the following: spinach artichoke dip, some super tasty salsa, kale salad with peanut vinaigrette, and the Thai noodle salad ( this dish was a party in my mouth). It was all excellent!
(5)Shaun B.
Ah yes, our local "we're too good to give coin change, put ice in your water, or permit cell phone use at your table, but feel free to wear your hoodie and sunglasses indoors" restaurant. Don't get me wrong, this place is not terrible, the service is generally pretty on point here and my girlfriend is a big fan of this place (she may even get upset with my opening line of this review, albeit it's being truthful), but charging nearly $20 for prime rib sandwiches or chicken tenders just seems absurd to me. The food itself is alright, and as I mentioned before, this place has good service. However, the selective pretentiousness kills it for me. If you're looking for a nice place to take work clients or your significant other for a special evening, this is not a bad choice. However, I'm not going to pretend that this is a go-to choice for me when there's plenty of other solid establishments in Memphis.
(3)Susie I.
I agree with some of the others. My family and I are repeat patrons of Houstons because we know we will get quality food and quality service. I think we have tried everything on the menu and it's been perfect every time. Over the years we have gotten to know some of the servers and that makes us feel even more welcome.
(5)Lauren G.
My mom and I went here without reservations on a Thursday night and we waited around 45 minutes. Wait times are a tricky thing, because they imply the good and experience are worth it and that the restaurant is beloved by many, but also can show inefficiencies. For Houston's, I would definitely say it is the former! I loved the atmosphere with the soft candle lighting and wooden details. Service was impeccable, we had Alice and honestly as soon as we were at the table she was asking us for drink orders and appetizers. My mom ordered the Moemi, I had a Malbec. The wine came out promptly and was delicious. I was very impressed with the offerings they had... A wide variety of all kinds that met several price points. The dinner menu was slightly more limited, albeit broad. There was a salmon option, fried shrimp, pork chops, rotisserie chicken, a filet and a center cut. There are also sandwiches and burgers, but to be honest as an adult I don't really believe those are dinner options haha. I went with the salmon, my mom had the French dip sandwich, and we were both really happy with the flavors of our meals. Also, thank god for Memphis, one of the last holdout cities where people value not only flavor but portion sizes. It was pricey, but we left completely sated. My only wish was that there were more dinner options and/or more vegetables offered as a side, of more creative sides for the entrees. It seemed like only potatoes for many of the entrees, although I am sure you can substitute.
(4)Christal S.
Amazing French dip sandwich fresh and yummy, service was good but they seemed a little understaffed. Bad bad bad Bloody Mary if you don't like flavor other than tomato juice you may like it.
(3)Elen W.
The food is always delicious. They are willing to cook it however you like. They will cook things off the menu. There are vegetarian options. It is one of my favorite restaurants and I never leave disappointed.

Baby wanted to eat out the other nite. Where to go? Several places were thrown out there, some were greeted with approval, others were not. So, why did we end up at Houston's. Very simple. I told my wife, we can go lots of places and get something good to eat, but you never know if it will be hit or miss on a given nite. I wanted something good, and I wanted to feel certain that if I went, it was going to be good. That's what the deal is with Houston's. It's always good. Never a miss. I usually order the grilled trout (don't see it on the menu? That means you don't go there enough.) It's there and it's fresh from Montana daily. Trust me. I always get it with the "Chef's dressing". OMG!!! I could just eat a bowl of that stuff. However, lately I have just ordered a salad and the smoked salmon appetizer (comes with the chef's dressing also). A bit pricey, but the food is always top notch.
(4)Paulette B.
This was my first visit to Houston's in over ten years. I stopped going because the menu was ALWAYS the same "fried chicken tenders", But now its like BAM!!! The atmosphere is cool and jazzy, the decor is fresh and the waiter was...ump, ump... I mean, nice :-). The food selection was reallllly different. I tried these smoked artichokes and WOW! Then I had this tuna salad that was AWESOME!!!
(5)Delancey K.
This was the most pretentious restaurant I have ever eaten at. All flash, no substance. If you were on a budget and wanted to impress someone who has never been to a decent restaurant, this is where you would take them. Houston's mimic and copy all the trappings of an intimate, fine dining restaurant but their food just isn't very good. Usually when a restaurant has a dress code and a no cell phone policy, the food is worth the fuss. Not so the case here. My meal was so unmemorable that I can't even remember what I had. Some kind of fish, maybe?
(1)Madison M.
I didn't get to try the food because someone in my party was wearing a tank top. This restaurant isn't nice enough to turn away six people at two o'clock in the afternoon on a Wednesday because of a teenage male in a tank top.
(1)Tan Y.
First let me say I am a chain restaurant snob. I just don't frequent them unless I have to.... obligatory birthday, anniversary shin digs, and of the like. However, this establishment is my one exception. I confess that I am having an affair with the sashimi tuna salad! This affair has been going on for almost been ten years now and has been satisfying. In earnest, the service here is always good. I actually prefer sitting at the bar because the bartenders are immensely personable. But don't worry, if you are an introvert, like I can sometimes be, they will leave you alone. My point is, they can read a crowd. The patio has been revamped, and offers great ambiance. I will continue this affair until my beloved sashimi tuna salad says it can't stand my love anymore....
(4)Hugh M.
Well, it's still not as good as it once was it has certainly improved over where it was headed. I won't even waste time talking about "the good old days" because I think they are long gone. The place has however found some consistency and the food is still solid. Service is efficient as always if a little shaky at times but I'm still a fan. One more thing this place is not cheap.
(4)Emily Y.
This place is a Memphis favorite and is always packed- pretty much any time of the day. My only real gripe is that there is not a lunch menu with more reasonable prices and portion sizes. That being said, I am a huge fan of the salads and steak varieties. When I want to tap into my inner youth, I order the chicken tender platter (off menu) and relish its deliciousness, as I did on my most recent visit. Great cocktail list and formal yet not atmosphere all at the same time.
(4)Scott F.
The place my parents always suggest we eat at in East Memphis. Food is decent but nothing to wait in line for. There is typically a waiting list. This place is good at being constant but you should explore other options in the area.

This is a nice place to go for a business dinner. Contrary to another review here, I found that we were able to make reservations. They have a nice ambiance, and fairly decent service. Most of the food seemed a little bland and in need a little salt or spice or something. I had Salmon, it was fairly good. Not awesome, but good. I tried their spinach dip. It was good. They are doing something unique with it, but I can't tell what. They have 3 desserts. We tried all 3. The apple strudel was the best. A guy I was with told me the brussle sprouts were the best he had ever had and then tried to push them off on me. I declined.
(4)Don C.
Great atmosphere and always crowded. Met some old friends here and had a great meal with excellent service. My wife had soup and salad. The soup was Artichoke and Mushroom and it was over the top delicious (I had a taste). I got Seared Tuna - very fresh and cooked perfectly. Salad was fresh as well.
(4)Brittney H.
They take reservations now!! Woohoo!!!! Get the prime rib... Nothing else... :) Be aware of going late at night, though.. The crowd changes..
(5)Allan E.
Over 30 years of GREAT food shared with friends at Houston's has resulted in it being preserved as a mainstay at least twice a week, usually more often. Menu variety & customized service for any and every occasion serve to win over family, friends & business associates. Original management changed last year and again last month, but fortunately the foundation established by Jack Mahoney has cultivated a loyal customer base and high expectation of dining standards. The new management can strive to preserve these standards each & every day to perpetuate the sustained success of the oldest Houston's restaurant in business today.
(5)Greg B.
I eat here every time I visit Memphis. Good food and atmosphere and the service staff is amazing and uber professional.
(4)Hayes H.
This is one of my favorite places to have lunch. The atmosphere is one of the best in Memphis. They have the best spinach dip. They make a terrific French Dip, and the double-cut pork chop is outstanding. It is always packed and there's usually always a wait.
(5)Joelle P.
If you can get a table, Houston's is always a safe bet. I don't know why they don't take reservations...and sometimes the wait is over an hour. But if you go on a day when the wait is reasonable, I'm all for this place. The food is yummy (try the grilled chicken salad), the drinks are good, and the atmosphere is great (I love the dim lighting and gas lanterns). And their patio is one of the best in Memphis. It is also the restaurant where you will undoubtedly run into someone you know. Happens every time. I just don't know why they recently painted the beautiful exposed brick in the lobby a hideous green...
(4)Bob M.
Oh no. Been going to houstons for twenty years. They changed their famous fries and have now broken what did not need to be fixed I have tolerated escalating prices because the food was so good. The burger and chicken strips and salads are very good but it appears they have downgraded their bacon bits too. I'm posting this in an effort to have them bring back the old fries

Date night in east Memphis brought my boyfriend and I to Houston's for dinner. I've been here a few times but usually I'm' just meeting friends for drinks at the bar. I've had a few appetizers in the past but never a full meal. I went with the half rotisserie chicken but I swapped the couscous for wilted spinach. The chicken was flavorful and juicy. I wasn't crazy about the sugary glaze. If I ordered this again I would ask if I could get it without the glaze. The spinach was wonderful. Very garlic-y and cooked to the point that was not mushy at all. My boyfriend ordered the grilled chicken salad. He ate every bite and he kept commenting on how good it was. We both ordered coffee and my boyfriend could not resist ordering a dessert he saw a couple eating at the next table. It was an apple cobbler with toasted walnuts and caramel sauce. I refrain from eating sugar so I didn't try it but I can honestly say that I was very tempted. It looked great and it smelled even better. All in all it was a nice meal but I believe the prices are inflated for what you get. The service was a bit slow. I will not be running back to Houston's any time soon.

I have been going to Houston's for years. On my last visit my friend ordered an alcohol beverage. They asked her for her license and walked off. After five minutes the waitress came back. I asked why she walked off with the drivers license. She said company policy requires them to scan the barcode on the back of the license. This is clearly not necessary. It will be a long time before I ever go back. They are scanning the license to get your information. I would love to know if they are retaining that information.
(2)Elle S.
I don't know why anyone wants to eat here, their food is not good. NOTHING is amazing here. Definitely do not get their Caesar salad it sucked butt. Service is nice but I never come here by choice and I'm reminded why every time I eat here. Ugh
(2)Jyoti R.
Came on Saturday 1.30 pm had a wait time of 40 mins. Omg totally worth that heavenly thai noodle salad of theirs.. wish i could steal their recipe!
(4)Madeleine N.
Houston's is a restaurant that we frequent because all three generations of our family request to eat there. We love the food. They have a diverse menu, wonderful atmosphere and great service. It's very popular so be advised that you will have to wait for a table.
(5)Natalie S.
Had such a fun time with the family, they were crazy busy the night we went but we still had amazing service and our food was quick to come out. It was delicious! !! Ask for Robert, he was so funny and made great recommendations in the drink and entree department.
(4)Frank C.
The food and service are good. But it's always crowded and tends to be noisy. I'd suggest making a reservation since there always seems to be a waiting line.

Last time I visited Houston's restaurant was in 2004. I remembered it was just an average place serves average American cuisine. Yesterday, after checked in at nearby Hilton, we walked in Houston looking for a quick cheap bite. We must look very odd since both hubby and I were in our perfect Floridian outfit that appear total clashed with this upscale scented restaurant. The Huston's had got herself a face lift. I was a bit embarrassed. Oh well, water under bridge. Gladly, the reception lady greeted us with a very professional smile. To avoid waiting for open table, we decided to sit at the bar. Again, the bartender greeted us with another professional smile. I looked around and soak myself into the trendy setting and enjoying accompany with modern looking guests despite what I was wearing. Now, Houston's, show me the money. My $17.00 Thai Steak Noodle Salad with a chic presentation pacified my snobbery taste buds. The salad dressing is well balanced with citrus, sweetness and tint of hot pepper. Its rich flavor enhanced by crashed peanuts, mango and avocado, yet light enough to compromise the tenderness of flash grilled steak tips. However, the $24.00 doubt-cut Pork Chop on hubby's plate didn't get his respect at all. It is very salty. I helped him on few bites and thought it was well prepared and cooked in perfection. The pork is very juicy and flavorful that will please any meat-loves if the chef can reduce a bit on the salt. We ended our meal shared an ice cream with chocolate topping. The hot chocolate sauce is not from some cheap can. The slick smooth flavor successfully lock the snob into my mouth. Despite the higher price, despite the lack of attention from our server, despite my hubby's protest of how Houston mummified his mouth, I like this restaurant and I will visit it again, of course, buffed with a proper set of outfit.
(4)Daniel B.
This is exactly the kind of restaurant that has mystified me since coming to Memphis. The salmon dip was not as good as others available around (but just as if not more expensive), and I'm well-traveled enough to know when a $33 prime rib cooked medium rare should be a better grade of beef (that part was actually kind of offensive, given the wide availability of better grade, sometimes even cheaper, iterations of this entree in town). For me, it just doesn't make sense in this price range, and the "atmosphere" doesn't really justify a return trip. Sorry, loyal fan base..
(2)Andy S.
It was my friend's birthday, and she chose to visit Houston's. It was also our one a month dinner club. Houston's is a chain restaurant, but it's also more like fine dining. We had the spinach dip for an appetizer. The dip was delicious. They gave few chips, though. However, we were given extra when we needed them. I decided to have a salad before my meal. The blue cheese was phenomenal and it had plenty of bacon on it with a delicious piece of garlic bread. I also had their clam chowder. It was too good and creamy. On to the meals... Two people had the thai steak and noodle salad. It was just ok to me. I'm not a fan of this type of salad. However, they both enjoyed it. Another ordered the crab cakes. These were great! The cole slaw was surprisingly good as well. One person had the sashimi tuna salad. I did like this salad; well, I only tasted the tuna and it was good. One added a side of couscous. I like couscous; I wish it were more common in restaurants in Memphis. I had the steak special. I ordered my steak rare. I loved it. It was so tender and flavorful. I can't remember what the sauce was. I had artichokes and spinach as my side items. I liked the artichokes. Personally, the spinach was too salty for me. However, we shared everything and it was all eaten. We had to get a dessert and sing happy birthday. It was a super chocolatey brownie with ice cream on top. This was my first visit, and I enjoyed it. I would go back.

My husband picked up for the 100Th time and it was a disaster for the 1st time! Overcharged by 2 items& the hostess wanted to wait till my husband left to give him his credit. The food was cold, unappetizing, and much smaller servings than usual. We know that the last manager of 20+ years has been replaced. New management must not be working out. Anyway, We won't be going or picking up anytime soon.
(1)freddy t.
Called them 40 mins ahead, when we got there they said they didn't have anyone by that name for call head. Irritated a little bit. Waited around 15-20min before we got seated. Seth our waiter was very attentive, food was great! Especially the water, they triple filter the water. Not use to drinking "good water" We are from Dallas, first time going to Houston's, will definitely be hitting up the one by our house.
(5)Don S.
Five stars for consistently great service and good food. Love the key lime pie, ahi tuna salad, famous French dip, awesome French fries and daily soup selections. Staff greets regulars by name, knows your preferences in beverage and has the best glass of water in town. Arrive early for lunch, especially on Sunday and make reservations at supper or you may wait a bit. Also has carry out service now.
(5)Tim P.
2:30 PM Finally we went and didn't have to wait. We hate waiting. Clearly their business model is volume. The very idea there's not a Houston's downtown is ludicrous. However, it would be busy at noon an sporadic at night. 2:30 PM is the only time we've ever been and didn't have to wait. And, it 's not cheap!!! However, it's the most consistent food, best service and one of the best interiors in Memphis. Lots of menu items to love and go back for. The best spinach artichoke dip and Key Lime Pie anywhere. If you want the famous chicken tenders...just ask. They took them off the menu but will still do them if you ask. Just good standard fare...but you pay for the look and the attention to detail.
(5)David B.
Our family recently went back to Houston's and it was fantastic. They have fixed all the issues I last wrote about. The service was great and the food was great as well. We especially like the Gulf Coast Fish Sandwich. It has always amazed us how well the server staff works together. Its like we have 2 or 3 servers waiting on us because they all watch out for each others tables. We will be back again soon.
(5)Tim G.
Love the Pork Chops I miss this place since i have moved back to texas im going to have to go and visit so I can get my fix the service is always top notch and the food is always good... You won't be disappointed
(3)Led D.
I took my wife here for her birthday and I made a great choice!!! We had their famous spinach dip and it did not disappoint at all. Besides the chip and the dip, it also accompanied with salsa and cream cheese. I could not believe by mixing it that it will actually taste awesome. What a surprise!!! I had the prime rib with bake potato loaded and my wife had the marinated ribeye with some purple cabbage. Both dinner tasted great along with the sides. I impressed with the purple cabbage because it actually tasted good. The place has a high end ambiance but cozy. Nice size bar and good selection of wine, beer, and alcoholic drinks. The waitress are friendly and very professional. They make you feel at ease and comfortable. Even though the prices are little high but it was great place to celebrate. We will definitely will come back again.
(3)Susan R.
My first visit to Houston's in Memphis, TN was delightful! The patio was perfect for drinks and appetizers. I highly recommend the smoked salmon which was so moist and yummy. My friend had the shrimp cocktail. I've never seen such big shrimp. Our waitress, Ashley, recommended the Pimm's cup cocktail. This was an awesome recommendation that I can't wait to have again at my next visit to Houston's, which I assure you will be really soon.
(5)Staci T.
I had a nice experience here with my husband. We had an efficient waitress that got us everything we asked for. The food wasn't specacular, but it was nice. The portions were ample, as I was able to take part of my entrée home.
(3)SG P.
Good food but is getting to be very overpriced for what you get. Have eaten here for years and the menu keeps getting smaller and the prices higher and higher $50 for lunch for 2 people no dessert no salads just tea, 1 app, 2 entrees. Service is usually really great but this was just so- so, server seemed indifferent and actually questioned our choices.
(3)Wayne R.
The food was awesome! The steak I had, the Hawaii, was so good, that I could just eat the steak on its own and call it a meal! Love this place, every penny spent is worth it. But be careful. . . The service can be iffy sometimes, like tonight. It really was sub par for such a nice establishment. I don't know if it was the waitresses's first day, but whatever the reason, I was not impressed.
(3)Kyla W.
Valentines Day Dinner! I rarely, if ever, give out 5 stars, but this place was pretty awesome. We had reservations and got right in, our Server was friendly and efficient. I must throw out this random, probably often overlooked, fact, the water they serve here is delicious! I don't know what kind of filtration system they have, but if I could imagine the taste of the perfect glass of water, Houston's has it! I did my homework and Perused Yelp before going and took the Spinach and Artichoke dip tip. It was amazing, definitely the best I have EVER had. The chips were decent, but the dip was the star! I ordered the Hawaiian steak, that is not the technical menu name I believe, but you get the idea. It was pretty tasty, I don't think I would order this particular flavor again but the meat was amazing. It was cooked to a perfect Medium rare, the meat was thick and tender, it was juicy, it was great! This came with a STUFFED baked potato and it was also amazingly delicious! My date had the seared Prime rib and fries, again the steak delivered. I would say the bite I took out of his was probably the best bite of steak I have EVER experienced. I would highly recommended this place to anyone and everyone but expect to drop at least a hundred.
(5)Gee W.
Short version: Food gets 4 stars, Pricing gets 2 stars Houston's-I've always viewed this restaurant as a good place to go, but I've also always thought it was overpriced. It's a nice chain restaurant. $18 for a French Dip....seriously? Yes, its good. But yes, its still a sandwich and yes its still Memphis. The service is usually pretty good and I like the salads and the sandwiches, but, for me at least, its hard to get over their pricing. And if you are thinking about just cruising in on a Sunday, beware of the after church crowd, this place gets slammed. Oh, and as a nice aside, good old ex mayor Hereington (I checked the spelling I swear), would often be trolling around the bar between being investigated by the Feds. Add or deduct stars accordingly.
(3)Jen B.
Food was good. Love the cheese bread Will come back Also it's nice they have stevia sweetener
(4)Stacy E.
Great restaurant for vegetarians! Really! If you have friends that are meat eaters and you want a good veggie burger, go here. Thick and homemade. Even pink in the middle so it looks like meat.
(4)Barrett R.
The food is fine, but the prices and crowds are insane.
(2)Landa D.
On my way back to Chicago, I had to stop in to get Houston's. I took my order to go. For a seven hour ride, the food was chilling in the cooler on ice. I had the regular : Hawaiian rib eye steak and baked potato, spinach dip, traditional salad with no corn. Although they did not remove the corn on my salad, the food was delicious! I've never traveled such a distance with food before, but I must say that the quality was not compromised. They packed everything very, very well (I was impressed) and the server was nice and professional. Although I did not dine here, I will say that this was my best take out experience ever. I hope to dine in when I return.
(4)Ross G.
A great place to take your parents. I love the cozy interiors and the professional staff. However, this place really focusses on turning tables. I admit our dinners have to be a bit abbreviated with a little one in tow , but give me a minute to look over the menu. And don't look at me funny if we want to start with an app and a drink to settle in. The food is safe, large portions and literally flies out of the kitchen moments after ordering. I feel the menu relies too heavily on high fat ingredients to elevate flavors. The fish sandwich was good, but with the amount of fried batter and rich tartar sauce, the fish was all but lost. I won't be a regular, but will keep it in my back pocket for older family members (those that don't yelp)
(3)Greg H.
Went there with business colleagues. Sat at the bar next to a 7 year old who was having his dinner. With plenty of tables in the dining room, there was no reason for this child to be at the bar...period. Can we not have an adult beverage in the company of adults!? That's a manager more interested in making a revenue quota than confronting an irresponsible parent. Next time this happens, I'm going to ask the kid, "What do you think of the jugs on that girl?" Maybe that will make the parent(s) whisk them away?
(3)Christine L.
Houston's is a consistent and safe choice for lunch or dinner. The service is always great, the atmosphere is upscale casual, and the food is consistent. Although the food is consistent, I often find it boring and lacking creativity. Spinach artichoke dip is always a good choice. They offer strawberry shortcake seasonally, but when they do, order it! Yummy stuff. As for most of their menu items, they are all safe bets, but there is nothing special about them or anything that makes you remember a particular dish. The one menu item that keeps me going back is the Seared Ahi Tuna Salad. It is light, filling, and refreshing. Chunks of avocado, mango, and ginger tossed with fresh lettuce and tender generous pieces of seared tuna. It puts all other seared tuna salads to shame. I always order it with no dressing (I squeeze lemon juice on it) but I've been told the cilantro-ginger vinaigrette is the perfect complement to the already delicious salad. And remember, everyone looks better in the dark ;)

Houston is one of my restaurants here in Memphis. The food quality is always consistent and the service is dependable. This is the kind of place where you can expect to get a medium steak cook to perfection, almost every time you go there. The food tastes great without being too salty, like most places in Memphis. The vegetable on the salad is always fresh and crisp. This place is always busy, for a reason. They have many loyal customers.

Great place. A little pricey but if you want to spend the money then your getting your worth in here. Service is fantastic (Rachel is the best server ever), food is prompt and more than enjoyable. A great spot for a celebratory evening.

We ate here for the 1st time in July of 2012. We live in the Chicago area, but never tried the restaurant. Now we never will since it is closed. Our meals were delicious. Asked for the seafood chowder appetizer, but they were out of it. Waitress recommended the house salad instead. it was the bomb. Thought I would eat the plate; it was that good! Crab cakes were great, wife had chicken to be safe. Portions were good. Would recommend you try Houston's if you are in the area. You won't be disappointed. Enjoy!

The one star is not for the food, it's actually pretty good. I was informed that they are phasing out their take out service. I am not in the restaurant business but revenue is revenue. I used to do take out here at least once a week, spending an average of 40 dollars. I don't understand the move but it seems like a dumb one.

This place is usually so crowded that I can't even get in. But tried earlier one day and got in with a 15min wait. Not bad. Enough time to grab a drink at the bar. Their long island iced tea is very unique. No typical bar where they overpower the drink with fake sour mix. They have pure freshly squeezed lemons here in their long islands. It tastes like a hard lemonade. Then, I tried the smoked salmon appetizer, which was good and simple but nothing I will crave later on. For entree, I got the Hawaiian rib eye. It was quite tasty. I finished the whole rib eye. It was very tender and seasoned just right. I tried two side (mashed potatoes and the broccoli) dishes but none of them I cared for. For dessert, I tried their keylime pie. And let me warn you....it is true keylime! Super rich and tart with keylime in it. Lol I could not.handle the whole thing. Everything is clearly made fresh. Great first experience.

I have not had anything here I didn't love! They serve large portions, so you get your money's worth. They also have great service. They get very busy in the evenings, especially Fri & Sat nights. I recommend the delicious crab cakes & slaw (better than your typical slaw), chicken fingers (& who normally orders those?! lol), beef salad (huge with tons of vegetables) & the cheesy bread. Yummm!

This is a good place to come when you want typical American fare and a little more formal atmosphere that's not quite fine dining. There is great, professional service here and a menu that is standard to all Houston's locations. You can expect consistently good food here, even if it's not really that innovative. Specials are always a good bet (the crab cakes on special when we went were really meaty and well-sauced). I find the soups here to be oversalted as a rule, but the tortilla soup I had tonight had a pleasing texture and nice chunks of chicken despite the fact that I had to drink water after every bite to deal with the salt. Good sandwiches and steaks here (I love the French Dip), but be prepared to spend AT LEAST $15 per person on salads and sandwiches, and up to $30 for entrees. Overall, not sure that the price is worth what you get (my soup and salad was $14), but Houston's is definitely a Memphis establishment, so maybe you'll think differently.

Above average fern bar. Food is always good, as is the service.

I have been to Houston's from Chicago, to Texas and L.A., Atlanta and more. They best Ribs of any place I have been. The Memphis location is always packed, which shows a great following and service.

Great Food and Service. We always try to eat here when we're in town. I do recommend reservation though.

Houston's is ok. I may take a lot of slack for saying it's just ok because most Memphians absolutely love it. And I've tried, oh, I've tried. But I stand by the ok. The place is always crowded, no matter what time. And I honestly wouldn't mind the wait if the food was to die for. But I really don't like anything except the seared tuna salad, the spinach artichoke dip and the french fries. I do like the dimly lit dining room, and the roomy patio, so it's a nice place to sip wine with friends. And the location is certainly convenient for a quick happy hour with co-workers. My husband's family likes to go whenever they are in town, so we usually go about once a year. And yep, I always order the seared tuna salad.

I fought off going to Houstons for 3 years and finally gave in for lunch recently. The wifey and I went in to see a friend who is a server there. I ordered a burger and wifey ordered a veggie burger :(. My burger was great (favorite "resturaunt burger" in Memphis so far) and it is hard to admit that the veggie burger was actually quite good. (and I'm a burger snob) The next week it was time to go back with our friends for dinner and again, everything we had was awesome. My friend and i split a steak and fish entree. My steak was cooked how i ordered and seasoned really well and the fish was pretty good but not amazing, but the service was... Signed, New Fan of Houston's

The greatest veggie burger in the world. I cannot get enough. The higher-than-average price is worth it for the quality food and great service. The servers work really hard here.

I took my fiancé here for his birthday and I had called 2 hours ahead to get a reservation, but when we got there we had to wait an addition seven minutes. We ordered the Hawaiian Rib Eye that turned out delicious! The portion was great and the Rib Eye was tender and juicy. So 5 stars for the food... however our service was slower than a snail. She only visit us twice which was to take our order and give us our check. Some other waitress took our drink order, delivered our food, and gave us some steak sauce. I asked her for a straw to drink with my water and it took her 15 minutes just to come back. It took her so long to get our payment that we just decided to pay in cash so we can just leave it on the table without having to wait for her to come back. So for that, I give the service 1 star. Maybe next time we can get better service.

You can't go wrong with a meal at Houston's. I've never had a bad one. I love their salads and homemade dressing. The chicken tenders are the best in town, just the right amount of crunch and tender chicken. The bar area is nice and the service is excellent, that is saying a lot for Memphis. The outdoor patio area is a nice place to sit with friends and enjoy a cocktail. Expect a wait, there is almost always one. If you are going for lunch, go early. Get there right when they open and avoid the wait.
(4)Jolynna M.
Always busy, always a wait for dinner, no matter what night you go. It's been around a long time, but it's still ever the place in Memphis to see and be seen, despite the fact that yes, it is a chain. Still, it's a good one and one of my personal favorite restaurants in town. The bar is nice, they have a good selection of wine and great service. And I simply love the Ahi Tuna Salad.

I eat out a lot, and I will say the service is great. The pricing though has gotten out of hand. For a slab of ribs it costs $27.00 and they were not that good, mostly bones, little meat. Most rib places charge $18.00 most $25.00. If you want ribs in Memphis go to Blue City Cafe downtown. The fillet costs $33.00, which is similar pricing to Butcher Shop and to Ruth's Chris, I ordered it Medium and it came out an easy medium rare. It was good but the wrong temperature. The salads are $16 to $18 dollars. The pricing is just out of line. It is too loud to be a Ruth's Chris. I will not be going back even if it was for a date night just due to the pricing. Three people for lunch was over $110 if you consider the tip that you have to give, without wine or alcohol. I have eaten at NY, Miami, and LA restaurants with similar or better food and it was cheaper.

I love Houston's for a variety of reasons. * Consistancy - I always know the food will be great and the service will be professional and flawless. The Cosmos are always good too, which is actually a component of how I judge nicer restaurants. (Bartenders, they should be pink, not red!!!) They also use fresh squeezed orange juice if you like screwdrivers or mimosas. * Atmosphere - Dark wood and dimly lit - what's not to like? * Food - I know I said the food is great, but let me expand upon that. It's really really really good. The appetizers are good (love the smoked salmon and the spinach artichoke dip), the sandwiches are good (try the Biltmore! They took it off the menu but put it back on due to popular demand) and the entrees are super good. - Hawaiian ribeye, ribs, rotisserie chicken...you won't be disappointed. Salads are interesting too, although I'm not much of a salad girl (filler is what it is!! - give me the good stuff!) Great for business lunches/dinners....or if you just want a special, memorable dining out experience. Oh, and this is a small detail, but kudos to them for offering black napkins if you are wearing black. It's a nice touch that does not go unnoticed in my book.

Houston's is probably the most popular restaurant in Memphis and has been for years. The reason for this is that they crank out very consistent, basic fare and the service is always top notch. The only problem for me is that it seems like they have been reading their own press and the prices have gone through the roof! $18 Chicken tenders $17 French Dip and $15 burgers. I took my mom to lunch and we had the spinach dip to start, she had the Asian chicken salad and I had the French Dip. We drank cokes. The bill with tip was almost $60. The food is solid but the bang for the buck is just not there.

Went back to Houston's after hearing they accept reservations-got tired of going and having to wait for an hour or more for a table-especially if we tried to go on a Sunday for lunch. Forget about it. Alas got there for the reservation today and was informed we'd still have to wait for a table for 20 mins. Why make a reservation then? I guess 20 mins is better than an hour to wait? Declined to wait and sat at the bar instead. Ordered soup and main course. Main course arrived before the soup after waitress had specifically asked "when would you like the soup" and we said, "Before the entree." Don't people usually eat soup first and then the main course? The soup was sent back since we'd already started eating the main course. Food was good but Houston's.-C'mon do better with the reservations. The system you have is not working. It's like either you're pregnant or not-take reservations or don't but don't take them and then tell people they have to wait for a table. Like other reviewer we also found ourselves seated at the bar with 2 kids app.7 and 9 yrs old sitting with us and dining with a parent. They were really very well behaved and all but still kids in bar? Oh yeah and lastly they have upped the prices on EVERYTHING. Our meal for two with no alcoholic drinks-2 Virgin Mary's only and a salmon and prime rib sandwich was $42.00. The real bone in prime rib that was $24.00 the last time we'd gone there is now a hefty $32.00 a pop. Sorry good food it may be but I won't be going back.

It was okay, nothing to write home about. I did like the ambiance and the service was good, but I wouldn't go back if I was in town again.
(3)Bryan S.
Very disappointing. Overpriced and less than average food. We both had crab cakes which were the "special". They were just ok. The bill comes...$30 each entree! We spent $80 for lunch for 2 people and no drinks just sodas. They never told us the price of the specials. If they had we would not have ordered them. Will not go back.

A colleague took me to lunch at Houston's when I was in Memphis recently for a conference. I had one of the daily specials which was their outstanding shrimp creole. It was every bit as good as any shrimp creole that I've had in the French Quarter restaurants in New Orleans. The shrimp were large, so that made it even better. I also had a house salad with the garlic butter dressing. The portion sizes for both the main entree and the salad were quite large. We had a twenty minute wait before we were seated and it was pretty evident that Houston's is not only popular in the evenings, but for lunch as well. Our server was top notch and we had a very short wait for our food.

Was in Memphis for a business trip and decided to stop off at Houston's for dinner. Houston's is an upper end steak house. When I got here about 5:30 on a Saturday the place was packed. I decided that instead of waiting for a table that I would eat at the bar. The place is nicely decorated and definitely has that upscale steakhouse feel to it. The bar was big with several flat screen TVs and had a nice wood feel to it. Plenty of space there even with the place crowded without feeling like someone is hovering. The one issue I had with the dcor was the place is very dark. I would have liked a little more light to the place. Got to the bar and got a menu. Basic steak menu that they spice up with the side dishes. Look for your standard chicken, T-Bone, Porterhouse, filet migion, along with a couple seafood items such as Atlantic salmon and Sea Bass. Prices here are on the high side. For appetizers and salads you're looking around $7 -$10, for chicken, seafood, and hot sandwiches around $13 - $22, and steaks here start around $20 and go up to about $30. I decided to get the roasted half chicken with dirty rice and a salad. Sat around and had a beer (beer on tap around $6) and they do have a pretty extensive bar options for you drinkers out there along with several premium alcohol selections. First up was the salad. I have to say, very impressive first start. For out here in Memphis, they do an excellent job in getting fresh produce. There was plenty of salad there and it was enough to feed two. Other bonuses are fresh bacon and none of the baco-bits places try to pass off as bacon and the piece of crostini that came with it. After I finished my salad, I got the half chicken. I have to say that it was a decent size chicken (probably on the small side, but enough to feed one) that was nicely presented with the dirty rice. They did an excellent job on the chicken, fully cooked and very tender and juicy. The dirty rice also went well with the chicken and also well executed. The bill for one including a beer from the tap came out to be $40. Service was nice and friendly and quick which was appreciated. Food here was good and well presented. I would have like a little more light while dining, but I can overlook that one. The other negative, I got no bread with my meal. Would have been nice if there was a slice of bread with it. Overall I would recommend Houston's for high end steak dining and they get a well-deserved 4 star rating.

I've eaten at this place a few times, and it's just okay. I always go back here because I always hear people saying good things about it. Usually enough time has passed between my last visit that I've forgotten most of the details, and I'm thinking, "Yeah, that's a good place. Let's go there!" Except it's not really. The atmosphere is decent. I can see how some would hate it, but I rather enjoy the dark interior. The menu is limited. The wait staff usually falls somewhere between okay and good. The menu isn't very diverse. I know it's a steakhouse, but there should be some variety. I can't say I've ever had anything here that tastes amazing, and it really should since it's a pricey place. Like the wait staff, the food falls somewhere between okay and good.

I honestly don't understand the appeal of this place. They don't take reservations so in order to eat without a ridiculous wait you have to go early or late. This time we went early, before 6 pm and still had to wait 20 minutes. The menu is uninspired and never changes which is the reason most of my friends who like this place like it. Me, I can never really find anything on it I want to eat over and over. Tonight I thought I would try the chicken sandwich but before 6 pm they were out of chicken for the chicken sandwich. On a Friday night. This was ridiculous, but nevertheless true. So I had to resort to the burger which cost twice what Huey's costs and tastes about 1/2 as good. I failed to notice since I was required to re-order that the burger came with mustard pre-applied. If I'd realized that before hand, I would have ordered it without it, but I didn't and so I found it all but inedible because of the amount of mustard applied to the soggy bun. The restaurant is too dark. The utensils are too bulky. The refusal to bring you water unless you ask for it is annoying. The way they handle refills, bringing you a new drink when yours is empty, is time consuming and almost always leaves you with periods of time with nothing to drink. And I don't understand why they don't put ice in the water unless you ask. At least this time, our food arrived in a reasonable amount of time even having to order my entree twice. A recent Sunday lunch visit left us with four hungry children waiting over 30 minutes to receive their food. And everything on the menu is very overpriced. If it weren't for the excellent chicken fingers and fries which my son loves, I would never eat there again.

I've been here awhile back but figured if I was going to write a review, I should eat here at least one more time more recently. tonight, we went after hearing quite a few people rave about their burgers. i have no problem eating at chains as long as the food is good. there was a short wait for a sunday evening. only 10 mins; so it wasn't hard to stomach. service was kind of weird. i mean, i think we got our spinach dip like a min after we ordered it. maybe someone in the kitchen or a server made a mistake but we had no problem since it didn't feel like the order had been sitting around for awhile. my problem with the dish however is... what is up with the side of salsa (that obviously comes out from a bottle; i can even tell you which brand!) and the bowl full of sour cream? the spinach dip is actually good - why mess with it? ...unless chicago style spinach dip means - comes with a bowl of bad salsa and plain sour cream?! The husband had the cheeseburger and the cous cous - more like tabouli though not even accurate tabouli since we found radish and macadamia nut in it lol... he liked his burger though. i had the burger with Canadian bacon and hickory sauce (again generic and out of a bottle) with fries. the bacon added absolutely no extra taste nor texture to the burger so I don't know why they picked Canadian bacon specifically... i was asked how i'd like my meat... if i'm asked, i expect the meat to be cooked the way i want it. part of it was medium rare and then most of it medium... i asked for the latter. the fries would have been good but they were all cold and limp. now these felt like they were sitting around for awhile. so did i enjoy my meal? not really... but people seem to like this place A LOT. i think it's a step up chilli's. price, food and even crowd. at least the teenagers don't come here by themselves after church or a movie lol. yes, definitely less kids which is a nice thing :) the burgers are actually 50 cts more then that of Interim. You know I'm going back there this week to go try that burger :)

I love Houston's. Unfortunately, its a chain, and I try to stay away from them as much as possible because I would rather spend my dollars in local restaurants. On the rare opportunity I do go for business lunches, I love to order their salads, either the seared tuna salad with mango or the chicken club salad. The service is prompt but a bit clincial. If you are planning on going for lunch, you better get there before 11:30. Otherwise, you will have a long wait. Also, I hate that they don't take to-go orders over the phone. You actually have to walk in the restaurant and order, have them serve you, then have them put it in a box. So silly!
(4)Cassandra C.
Been here twice now, both times for lunch. Food was tasty, although maybe a little on the pricey side for what it is. The decor says "Welcome, we eat dead animals in here".. aka woodgrain and gas lights everywhere. Service was pretty ok, I wouldn't say I really understand why this place is as popular as it is....maybe the location? But i'm sure I'll go again.
(3)Bruce L.
The food has always been very good and the service exceptional at Houstons in Memphis. The steaks and salad are consistently better than average and the burger and fries are simply the best I've had. Be aware that in Memphis you are likely to wait 30-45 minutes at dinner.
(4)Lawrence M.
I had the chance to eat at Houstons earlier this weekend. The place was vibrant with a large diverse crowed, from kids before the go to a party to grandparents w/their grand children. I liked the atmosphere and decor. Service was friendly and the staff is trained well, things were where they needed when they needed. I was also pleased with the fact that the restaurant didn't have that dirty / musty feel you get in some Memphis restaurants. Probably the biggest challenge was the menu. There really aren't many green items on the menu, lettuce and beans. I also did not appreciate the oyster crackers floating in my clam chowder. The chowder was good once I fished them out. The remaining food was fine, I had a ribeye w/blue cheese and worcester sauce. It was good, might be a little lighter on the worcester sauce as it overwhelmed the steak. The deserts were huge and tasty. I had their key lime pie and as a regular visitor to the Conch Republic, I thought they actually did a good rendition of it. Overall, it's worth a return visit, but the food flavoring and variety of sides need a little boost if they want to compete w/the best steak houses in Memphis.
(3)Lisa C.
I disagree. It is a chain restaurant but not like Olive Garden or Chili's-one on every corner. They do not take reservations so be prepared to wait especially on weekends. The only meal that I've beeen disappointed with was the ribs. It was my first meal there and the people who took us insisited I try them Not Memphis ribs- I could've had them anywhere in the US. However their salmon appetizer is wonderful and large enough to be it's own meal for lunch or a light dinner. Get the showstring fries- wonderful. I love the prime rib- never had a dry or overly fatty piece. My husband gets the pork chops which are also delicious. I'm pretty sure the lunch and dinner menu are the same. Yes they are a chain but a reliable one and not so overextended that they can't control the quality. A nice restaurant for date night or a special occassion.
