It's a fairly typical Mexican restaurant. The margaritas are strong as long as you order top shelf. I had some cheese dip which was good. I love their steak quesadilla. It's cheap, but it is stuffed full of cheese and steak. I get it a la carte. The service is ok.

Say it isn't so! Arturo is no longer running my now "former" favorite Mexican restaurant in Memphis. I hadn't been back in some time. The day I finally returned, I knew something was wrong. The chips tasted a bit stale and the salsa did not taste fresh - it tasted like it came out of a can. Noooooo! I ordered quest blanco and it was so runny, it spilled all over the table and my clothes. At this point, it seemed like they were cutting corners instead of making fresh salsa. I always get chilaquiles verdes. It's pulled chicken and caramelized onions on nacho chips, sprinkled with cheese. This dish used to be chock full of chicken. I found almost a whole onion and just two pieces of chicken in my dish today. I figured I would bring the meal home and jazz it up to taste a little better. That didn't go well either. Arturo's leadership was a team approach. I asked the man who brought our plates to us if I could have to-go containers, as opposed to asking the lady who took our order. I thought he didn't hear me because he kept going. I then said, "Sir" a couple of times and he walked off. In the end, I realized he had actually heard me because he sent our lady to the table and she asked if I needed to-go containers. RIP El Torro Loco, RIP.

Awesome service, great food, good prices and fabulous Margaritas. Everything I have eaten here was delicious. Seasoned well, not too hot and never dry. The atmosphere is nice depending on where you sit, that's why one of the stars are missing. The first area has better lightning and the seats are higher up and more comfortable. The second dining area was dark and drafty beside the Windows. However the friendly staff is always willing to accommodate, spoiled brats like me! :-)

I love this place. The food is awesome and delicious. I usually order Fajita mix and it is a combination of whatever I like. Plus, there a nice porch that I enjoy sitting there during summer.

The food was not seasoned the waitress needed help with our group but she did her best the drinks were good

We had lunch at El Toro around 12:00 p.m., today, 11/21/14. When we had finished our meal, I looked down at the chip basket and saw a dead roach. We flagged down our server, and we pointed out the roach. His response was, basically, that the pest control company had come the day prior, so the dead bugs were now falling from the ceiling, into the food. He then said that perhaps he would notify the "company" of our concerns, grabbed our credit card from the corner of the table, and took off to close out the ticket. I am not sure when "the dead bugs are falling into the food," became an acceptable explanation for extremely unsanitary conditions in an eating establishment. But, I know that, I for one, will never eat at El Toro, again, despite many years of patronage.

Bad food, bad decor, bad lighting. Service ok. Why would you eat her when there are so many better places to eat?

Good margaritas. Happy hour Monday-Thursday. They have great taco salads. I've tried it a few different ways but I really prefer the shredded chicken salad. I recommend if you go when it's not happy hour, bring a friend and split a pitcher. 1 pitcher=9 margaritas (I think). Gets harder to count after your 3rd. Today I had great service. Everyone all smiles and wonderful. But in the past, I've frequently had not-so-great service too. I'd like to start going again more frequently and hope they're moving in a positive direction. They've given the menus a facelift recently too.

A few years ago this used to be a pretty good place especially on Friday evening after work to enjoy some great food and great drinks. I've noticed in the past year the quality of the drinks, food & service went to hell basically it just flat out SUCKS now!! The cleanliness of this place now is poor at best. The service is piss poor. The quality of the food SUCKS!! There is something about ordering your food and it magically arrives at your table within 60 seconds piping hot!! So the food is not made to order anymore. I stopped going sometime late last year and don't even think of going back. The only reason I'm writing this is a friend I work with just ate there last night and was SHOCKED about the horrible service she had gotten. Do yourself a favor go some other place especially if your visiting from out of town.

No silverware. Small margarita No service. Blech. Meh. Not going back. Underwhelmed.

I love the taco salad here, and of course I love the margaritas. I don't love that they keep changing happy hour around and messing with the drink prices. The wait staff is not the friendliest. If you're coming in a group bigger than 5 expect to wait a long time between margaritas.

The food very flavorful and fresh. We ordered fajitas and the veggies were done to perfection. Kid friendly place and the staff is courteous. Great experience, will come back if we are in the area again!

Maybe my least favorite restaurant in town. The staff has attitude and the food quality is poor. The waitress seemed irritated to have to wait on people. She was very abrupt and rude. My burrito was covered with what looked and tasted like velveta cheese. A terrible experience from start to finish.

I have been dining from El Toro Loco for the past couple of months now. Last week, my colleague and I ordered a taco salad and the next day, we both succumbed to food poisoning. I'm never eating there again!

Just off of Union ext, in what used to be a Captain D's lies tasty Mexican fare with good service. I've eaten many times at el Toro Loco, but around the 5th time I dined, I found my favorite thing. So I can only comment on that dish. The Camerones a la Mexicana is amazing: Grilled shrimp, onions, bell pepper, jalapenos over a bed of rice with a little cheese. My husband always orders the fajita nachos and always sneak a bite because it looks picture perfect. My favorite things about El Toro Loco: -Consistency and great service. My food tastes the same every time. No strange surprises or issues with temperature. -The TVs are great for catching the game. (They're so close and huge) -Camerones a la Mexicana

Lots of booze made the food better, I don't speak no Spanish so I'm not sure what the toro loco means. The mural of the bull on LSD outside reminded me of Woodstock. The food was ok and pretty well priced. Not sure memphis is the best city for authentic Mexican food, so it's not entirely the restaurant fault.

friendly service, nice patio, inside was too bright and bar was in waiting area? received a lg "top shelf" marg for $8 when I asked what specials were available-great deal-not a great marg but not terrible. ordered toro loco fajitas for 1, had to grab an extra order of fajitas and ate every one in order to finish the insane amount of food in the order-i seriously should have stopped myself but they were good! still trying to find the best mexican place in memphis, this is def not the best i have had outside of memphis, but the best i have had in memphis so far.

Thursdays $1.99 MARGARITAS!!!!!!! It's a small but it's a lot to me for that price & taste great. I like mines frozen with no salt yaas! You only can get the lime flavor but that's fine $1.99 no complaints! I always get the a la carte tacos which 3 for $5. They're so good with free chips & salsa. Choices on the tacos soft or hard shell, chicken, pork of beef they all good yum!! The staff is super friendly & will also crack jokes with you they laugh at my dry ass jokes as we'll haha!

I only gave three stars for this review simply because I was not impressed. The service was okay, the food was okay... Everything was okay. The food was the same as the stuff from el portion, casa mexicana, etc. We had the cheese steak tacos and the chicken quesadilla which tasted fine...

I eat here way too much! But that's because I really like the food. The chips and salsa are always fresh and very tasty. Sweet tea is good as is most of the food. My favorite is the chilaquiles: I always take about half home for leftovers. Staff is friendly and attentive. Definitely my favorite in Memphis -- and just about anywhere for that matter. Good atmosphere with outdoor seating if desired and plenty of parking.

Neither great, not bad. It is just like any other Mexican restaurant in Memphis. Decent menu, easy to wallet and same taste like other places. You can choose to go tot his place if you are not in mood to travel very far, or lazy to find new restaurants or have not decided on anything (especially for big groups). Don't keep very high expectations!

  • Nick R.

I've been going here for a few yrs, initially because it was quite good, then because a significant other liked some of their dishes.... It's less than 1 mile from where I live and with the fact that it's quality has gone down as much as it has..... I rarely ever go there or order to go.... As much great Mexican food as there is in this city now a days, I have no problem driving somewhere authentic. That cares about the customer.

No one knows how we've lived here this long, passed this place as many times as we have and not eaten here till today. I'll agree with some others, the interior is much nicer than some of the other Mexican options in town, but the food? The food is on par with the rest. I have yet to be amazed by any Mexican other than Las Delicias, and it is time for me to revisit that joint because what I've been eating in the way of Mexican is just a big ol' disappointment to my mouth. I ordered guacamole, which was surprisingly decent, but I'm not sure how fresh because it was brought out literally 15 seconds after I ordered it. Yikes. I also got the cheese enchiladas, which were kind of generic. These weren't anything special, cheese inside corn tortillas with red sauce splashed on top. Very salty, and a bit crunchy for some reason. My husband got the chiles rellenos, which tasted similar to my enchiladas just a tad spicier, and the shrimp cocktail. The cocktail was the clear winner. Huge pieces of shrimp with chunks of avocado and seasonings swimming together in a large glass. We ate it with chips and it was the saving grace of the meal. The service was excellent, which is why it kills me that the food wasn't as good. They were very busy, but our waitress was constantly at our table, kept up with our drinks (no small feat considering we both felt like we were eating a salt lick) and ooh'ed and ahh'ed over the baby relentlessly. Even the bus boys were sweet. And that patio? Sign this girl up! I would consider coming back here to partake in margaritas and peruse the menu a bit more, I just won't go out of my way to do so. Now. if you'll excuse me, I have to get back to this bucket of water I'm downing...

Cheese dip and salsa is excellent! Dos equis amber on tap is also very good! I got the el toro loco burrito with chicken and it was delicious. When I go again I will definitely get the fajita chicken because it is one of the best out of all the Mexican restaurants in Memphis (Yes ive been to every mexican restaurant). I honestly prefer El porton as the best in Memphis for mexican but this comes to a close second when it comes to bang for your buck!

Always good service, they adjusted a couple dishes to suit a vegetarian so that was great. Very reasonable prices. Good salsa!

Liked it. Ate there 2 Sundays ago. Beers .99c!! Even Dos Equis or Blue Moon, granted 10 oz, but ice cold mugs, way to go. Had fajita combo for 2. Holy cow, it should say feeds 4! Huge, never seen that much food on a fajita for 2 plate. Also, had yellow peppers in addition to the normal grilled veggies. Definitely will be back.

First time to Memphis so it was a surprise to find a good Mexican Resturant. Chips and salsa were good. I ordered the white fish tacos with red tomtillo sauce. Extremly fresh and tasty. They were served with refried beans which were good, but from a health perspective I prefer whole beans. Just saying.

Since 'Cozymels' on Poplar closed, this hsa become our family 'go to'mexican restaurant., Conveniently located on Poplar and Union Extd there is plenty of lit parking and a really cool new patio area that would be great for enjoying large fruity frozen drinks....if we didn't have kids... (we love them really!). Inside is a large, clean but realitvely basic dining area but also a fun little bar area that usually has some soccer playing and a healthy looking bar. Wait staff are attentive, fast and friendly and the menu is extensive. Kids menu is kind of what you would expect but the food has always been fresh and well presented. Cheese Quesedilla is a firm favourite with our three boys!. Adult portions are huge. Presentation is nice, food is tasty, and did I mention that the portions are huge!!! I rarely avoid having to ask for a takeout box which for me is unusual. Prices are very reasonable and there are various happy hours and drinks specials advertised throughout the week. Kids eat free during 'happy hour' Monday through Thursday which makes this one of the most family friendly restaurants in town. We love this place!

For the price, hard to beat. Margaritas strong, about standard. Salsa needs to be better. Food in general is great. Service is great. (ask for Tony or Martin) I recommend anything from the grill. Happy hour is fun. Nice, new patio. I go there often.

I will NEVER dine there ever again!! I asked the server if I could get queso with no meat in it because I'm vegetarian, and she said yes. So she brings me the queso and I notice brown specs in it. I was suspicious of it and questioned her on if the queso has meat in it. She admitted that there is meat in it and then had an attitude with me about it, basically asking if I still wanted it or not. First time in years that I had to leave no tip!! Food isn't great there either. You can find much better Mexican food elsewhere.

It was decent. The day I went, during lunch, they were very slow. Good ambience though.

This place is average, okay. The prices are pretty decent and so are the alcoholic beverages. They take longer seating you but you get face table service. Whether its lunch time or dinner, the crowd is always there. Mainly because of the pricing. Very tiny inside, so I prefer to take the meal to go.

The service was great. Chips and salsa tasted fresh. The cheese dip was also very good. My gf's and my entrés tasted better than we could have expected... if you're looking for great Mexican food in Memphis at a decent price, this is the place to go.

Portions are big, service is quick, prices are low. Can't ask for anything more. Try the Chipotle Chicken Burrito and, if you're hungry, the El Rancho Dinner.

Better than most Mexican in Memphis. Definitely one of the nicer interiors in town. Can get slightly loud if you are near a larger party.

Some of the BEST MEXICAN food in the city, but the service SUCKS!!!! The guy at the register is lazy and useless. The service today was not bad until we had to hunt down our server to get the check. It is a shame that they do not fix the service. I have only been here twice and both times the food has been AWESOME and the SERVICE has sucked.

I love this place. Not only is it priced very reasonable but also food is great. Service is good and always pleasant. And yes I love the margaritas.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
