City East has always been an East Memphis staple for breakfast food. They have incredible omelets, bagels, pancakes, hashbrowns, and coffee. The staff is friendly and helpful. I know many people who love their plate lunches as well, I just have always done breakfast here. Can't go wrong at City East. There have only been a few instances when I was a little concerned about the cleanliness, but they do the best they can and when you go to a place hundreds of times, you're bound to have a couple below average experiences. Definitely a solid spot all around.

Our first visit to City East was for breakfast. We were cordially greeted and promptly served coffee. Neither of us ordered bagels. My wife had the pancake platter (3 large pancakes, lots of bacon which could have been slightly crisper and 2 scrambled eggs). Plenty of leftovers for me. I tried the oatmeal pancakes along with turkey sausage. I enjoy "regular" pancakes and could learn to appreciate the oatmeal variety. They were heavier than regular cakes and had a nice sweet taste. Two cakes were plenty. The generic syrup was nothing special. We noticed several groups of diners, apparently gathered for their regular breakfast. This is always a good sign. Bagels were enjoyed all around. Overall, the service was excellent, food was hot, coffee kept coming and the regulars enjoyed themselves, Our food was good but not great. We will return and we will definitely have bagels.

This is not a fancy place, but the food is tasty and reasonably priced. I ordered the sausage and egg Eggel on a jalapeño cheddar bagel with a side of cheese grits. I have to admit that I ate everything that I ordered and loved it all. The servers are friendly and came around regularly to refill coffee. If you are looking for an easy going breakfast spot that had a variety of food choices, try this place.

It's always crowded here but the food is so good. My favorite thing is the salmon and eggs. I get it w tomato and onions on the side and a sun dried tomato bagel. The only thing I don't like is the oatmeal. It's too mushy, just feels like paste. The waitresses are nice, but you better ask for everything you need as soon as they bring your food, it's so busy they might not come back until the end of the meal. The bagels are awesome! They serve them toasted, my fav!

I was craving breakfast food so we decided to try out this place this morning. We walked in and it was a little busy. We had to wait about 15 minutes to be seated but that's not bad for a Sunday morning. I ordered the oatmeal pancakes, turkey sausage and over easy eggs. My husband ordered the make your own omelet with ham, cheese and bacon, with toast and hash browns (no picture because he just eats too fast lol) . Well lets break down the meal...I loved their oatmeal pancakes. They were made just right and tasted great! However, I found their eggs were a little undercooked and the turkey sausage tasted burnt. My husband said his omelette and toast were good but the hash browns weren't great. According to his they were just cut up left over french fries. All in all I give this place 3 stars for mainly for their oatmeal pancakes. I didn't try their bagels, so I cannot review that.

I've been coming here for years because they have great food and staff ! I just today realized they have an amazing burger ! I firmly believe it's one of the best in Memphis !!!
(4)Aaron C.
Gosh, I love me some city east grille! The staff are amazing and so friendly. The food is delicious. The bagels are great! The best way to have the bagel is grilled. Try it, you'll be amazed! City east has a very home-y feel to it. Like a mom and pop diner. I love it. It's very cozy! Definitely a place to check out if you've never been! You have no clue what you are missing out on!!
(5)Christan H.
This place is pretty good. The service is alright. You see the same people every time you go. I like the nova bagel (everything bagel, cream cheese, lox, onion and tomatoes.) They have a pretty good amount of seating.
(4)Robin B.
I've been eating at this restaurant through three or four name changes now. We've seen the greek dessert case come and go, dinner service come and go, but the bagels- ah, the bagels remain consistent. Boiled and baked fresh daily, soft and chewy, in all the best flavors. (You may be able to get one free after 1:45!) Breakfast selections are good- skillets are of an appropriate portion size, and omelets are filling. This place is very kid-friendly, and you'll see many of the area's Jewish scene filing in on Sunday mornings for the best bagels and lox in town. Sandy is one of the friendliest servers you'll ever have, and even the cashier is always ready with a disarming smile and great sense of humor. The decor is unimpressive- it definitely has a breakfast cafe look to it, and the lighting isn't as good as it could be, but they have coffee and great breakfast, less greasy than Denny's with less of a wait than Blue Plate. Lunches include deli-typical sandwiches such as a turkey sub, or classic reuben, also meat and three, or vegetable plates featuring daily specials.
(4)Melanie C.
Very, very dirty! Saw one cook put hashbrowns on a plate with bare hand, yuk! French toast was sour tasting and so were the pancakes ordered by friend, very sour tasting! Didn't eat either.

The first time I came was for breakfast, and I had a very tasty spinach-potato skillet with feta cheese. It was on this visit that I heard if you come close to closing, you get...FREE BAGELS! That was the last time I came for breakfast. :) Since then, I've been twice for lunch. It would be more, but I live in Midtown and don't get out that way very often. I got the veggie plate the first time, which was pretty good, but the real value came from the bagels I got to take home! The other day I had the grilled chicken tenders with Mac and cheese and mashed potatoes. The veggies were good, but nothing spectacular. The chicken was really good, but there were raw parts so I had to send it back to get more cooking. Service is always really good - I get the same waitress every time and she is super-nice. And, did I mention...FREE BAGELS?!? Oh, yes. I will be back.

I don't usually eat breakfast food, because I'm not much of a morning person. I usually find myself at City East if I had a little too much fun the night before or I need to meet someone for brunch. (It is the best hangover food). This little place doesn't have the best interior design, it feels like an old diner... The food is amazing. I've tried a lot of different things, but my reining favorite are the oatmeal pancakes! They are fluffy, delicious, and good for you! They also make incredible omelets, the egg white with spinach and mushroom is my favorite! Then you get to the bagels... I love their bagels so much I will buy a bag and a large cream cheese and eat every last bite. You can have your bagel toasted or heated, I prefer heated. There are so many cream cheeses to choose from... I either go with cinnamon raisin bagel with cinnamon raisin cream cheese or the everything bagel with the sun dried tomato cream cheese! Both equally amazing just depends on what you are feeling. The food is so great, I really want to give them 5 stars... The service is what keeps me from that 5th star. The waitresses always seem grouchy and aren't friendly at all. I usually get it to go now because the girl at the register is at least sweet!
(4)Led D.
This place is exceptional!!! Great diner ambiance and the staff are very friendly. They have at least 10 different types of bagels. So if you're a bagel nut, this is your place. The pastrami skillet with eggs were awesome and the old classic, bagel with smoked salmon, tomato, onions, capers, and cream cheese was mouthwatering. We also had a side of sausage, it was also quite dainty. I was also quite impressed with their coffee. I actually liked it. The place was pretty crowded on a Sunday, especially after church but we were lucky enough to get a seat after we came in. Again it has a great diner experience and very nice to your pocketbook. I highly recommend it, especially if you love fresh food and bagels. Did I mention that they have 10 or more different types of bagels? Try it and you will enjoy it.
(4)Samantha B.
I came here a few years ago in undergrad with some friends, (Amber, Patricia, and Megan) and I have been dying to go back but I never could remember where it was or what the name of it was. I remember it as the pickle and bagel chip place because that's what they serve you automatically when you dine in! The prices are reasonable and the variety is great. I cannot wait to go back and try them again now that I've found them!
(5)Greg H.
The bagels are the best we've found in Memphis. Their Nova Lox makes my day. They know how to cook eggs (why do others find this so difficult?) and everything's very fresh. Even when they're slammed, the staff still works hard to give everyone great service.
(4)Irene R.
When my husband and I walked out of here we looked at each other and both shrugged and said "eh" The bagels are nothing special. I was really expecting more but they weren't that great. I got a lox sandwich. Too many onions, not enough lox. And the veggie cream cheese I asked for was rather bland. It's so hard to get bagels here and I was really hoping this place would be more like a taste of home. And NYC is not bland.
(2)Ren G.
City East Bagel company has the best bagels I've ever tasted. They're slightly crisp on the outer layer with a soft center, and somehow, they make the cream cheese that I'm pretty sure is just standard stuff taste even better. That said, I did receive terrible service here once a while back and I got the impression it was because my date and I were not conservative enough. He was wearing a punk rock jacket and I don't recall what I had on but it was probably similar. We both looked very counter culture, and were treated rudely by the staff. Generally, I grab a bagel to go, and the price is great. So as long as you don't intend to sit in the dining room looking anything but middle to high class and Republican, you should be fine.
(4)Dean D.
Service was great..had an omelette which was ok and hash browns which were over cooked. The bagel was excellent and I give them four stars for the exceptional service. They have many different freshly made bagels and you just can't go wrong with any of their bagel entrées.
(4)Jessica M.
This place gets 5 stars on their bagels and homemade cream cheese. The cream cheese is absolutely unbelievable. Everything else is okay, and the service is decent. Come for the bagels though. They're reasonably priced and so worth it!
(3)Philp S.
We sat down and heard them complaining that it was party day and had a few larger groups. Probably took 10 or more minutes to even get water. About another 10 before asked for our food order. For bagel place and breakfast it was incredibly slow service. The food was ok but the flavored bagels were very lacking and seemed nickel and dimed if you wanted anything to go with it and not enough cream cheese.

After a second visit to City East and coming from Raleigh, NC where non-chain bagel shops are a rarity, I have to give City East respect for their consistency and no frills ability to serve up a delicious and satisfying bagel experience. On both occasions I ordered the Nova Lox on an everything bagel and both times it was satisfying. Our waitress, complete with colorful knee high socks, was on point and gave us what I would call the ideal service experience for an establishment where menu explanation was unnecessary. Our waters were kept full, food service was quick and uncomplicated, coffee refills were frequent enough without being too often and the check was quietly placed on our table toward the end of the meal so we could finish at our own pace. The interior has a slight New York bagel shop feel which provides a pleasant ambiance. The cost is reasonable with two Nova Lox bagels and a coffee totaling $20 (including tax). Most importantly the bagels are fresh out of the oven with a crusty exterior and a soft, delightful center. All in all this is a great place for an early morning bagel run or mid-morning brunch. Their hours are 7am-2pm every day of the week. I recommend City East to anyone looking for a straight forward and delicious breakfast outing especially if bagels are your craving.
(4)Rich R.
Good bagels. That's all I know about this place! This concludes my review.
(4)Anna M.
I tried the strawberry waffle, fruit yogurt, cranberry bagel and cheese grits. The cream cheese on the waffle was very cheesy and tangy, not sweet. I really enjoyed it. The fruit yogurt was delicious with apples, grapes, granola, and pineapple in the strawberry yogurt. The bagel was very mildly cranberry flavored but it had a good texture. Overall I enjoyed it. The restaurant was busy and our waitress was a little harried. So the service may be a little confusing or slow but I still enjoyed it and would go back for more.
(4)Sherry J.
Brunch here was WONDERFUL!! Quite a crowd and they were taking names but we got seated quite quickly and service definitely didn't suffer! We had the waitress with the knee-high socks and they are currently HAPPY ST PATRICK'S DAY green with shamrocks! The food was fabulous. We split scrambled eggs with corned beef, scrambled eggs with lox, and a potato skillet...WOW so good!

I was excited to try this restaurant. It's near my parent's house and convenient to my husband's office. Today was our one and only visit because we surely won't return. Probably not even if they were giving it away. Seriously! We sat for over 10 minutes without being greeted by anyone on staff. I went to the front desk and picked up a paper menu. After the waitress finally took our order, she disappeared. We sat for 20 minutes before we got water. We ordered a basic sandwich and one of the lunch specials and it took just over 40 minutes to get our food. When it was delivered, no apology even offered. AND we still didn't have silverware. We sat looking at our food for about 3 minutes waiting on silverware. No drink refill. Plates sat in front of us when we were done. No check was delivered to us. I went to the cashier stand. When I commented that it had taken 40 minutes to get our food, she didn't offer an apology or even a comment. She ignored me, ran my credit card and said "have a nice day". The food was okay. Service- absolutely awful.

I love City East. It is the perfect place to go for breakfast or lunch with a friend or by yourself to read or work on the computer. The wait staff gets to know you immediately and always manage to ask me about my job or my little boy etc which makes me feel like a regular! I love that! My favorite thing to get is the lox and egg scramble and today I got a side of greens so I was able to stay Paleo! If I wanted bread though the bagels are delicious and made daily. My favorite is the salt bagel yum!
(4)Sheay D.
One of the best spots in town. The best bagels ever. The people are so friendly and they remember everyone. I stop in most mornings after work and I'm always satisfied and can't wait for the next visit.
(5)Catherine A.
Packed on a weekday morning when I was visiting for business. Huge Bagel case. Old school environment and staff. Lots of senior citizens to large packs of Mom's & kids. It was 8am so it was a lively morning for a Tuesday if you ask me. Staff is sweating almost from having to move around as much as they do. I'll DEF be back next time I'm in TN.
(3)John G.
Good breakfast of standard offerings. Coffee is tasty. Weekend mornings they are packed but they turn tables pretty quickly, though don't expect many refills on beverage when slammed. The wifey and I like to come here on weekdays for better service. Never had lunch here but the menu looks pretty good.

delicious, clean nice staff

This is not a food review. After being seated, our order was taken by our surly server. Our drink order was served. 45 minutes later, our bagel entrees had not arrived and no explanation or apology was made. This place should be avoided. When we left without eating, we observed some of the staff smoking out back.

Scott had both the French Toast AND an omelet for breakfast. He got me The Californian Sandwich, which is "Thin slices of turkey, avocado, alfalfa sprouts, tomato, lettuce, cucumber, swiss, and lite Italian dressing on toasted wheat bread," with pasta salad. He then also presented me with a dozen bagels and four different kinds of cream cheese (plain, cinnamon, strawberry, and chive). Wow, what an amount of food you can get from this place for 40 bucks! As a disclaimer, I cannot give this place a complete review, as I did not dine in. I can only report back about my food quality, but not service. Scott said his breakfast was good, but nothing special. My sandwich I thought was delicious. It also has many of my favorite ingredients on it. The pasta salad tasted fresh. My only qualm with it was that there was sliced pickles in it. I have never had pickles in pasta salad, and I was not really a fan. The strong pickle taste overpowered the rest of the ingredients. The bagels were also average. I love bagels, and I have eaten most of the ones from this place. However, they are nothing to brag about. The plain and cinnamon cream cheeses were good, however the others I wasn't to excited about. The strawberry was too liquidy and the chive was too overpowering. Also, I would not suggest buying this food unless you have the intention of eating it all that same day. My food did not keep well. I saved half of my sandwich for the next day, but it was spoiled when I went to eat it. Also, the bagels turned stale in less than 24 hours. All in all, this place gets an average rating. If I am in the area, I might stop by and try something else off the menu. However, the location and the hours are not convenient for me, and the food is not worth the drive.

I think the new name for this restaurant is City East Bagel Company. Definitely a great weekend breakfast spot. Here's why: The food: You get SO much for your money here. An omelet, bagel and home fries is only about $8. The bagels have a soft, chewy texture with a slight crunch. Plus there are plenty of Kosher options. The service: Usually friendly and prompt, regardless of the crowd. It's not a fancy place and the waitresses and waiters give off a hometown vibe. The atmosphere: Sunny. With linoleum floors and a mixture of booths and tables, the place seems sort of like a diner/deli in your grandma's kitchen. Extras: They still accept coupons for the Bagel Company and rumor has it if you go in after 2 PM. you can take as many bagels as you want with a purchase.
(4)Kerry C.
Coffee: The coffee wasn't anything special, just basic diner coffee. It was plenty hot and not watery or oily. Biscuit: Unsurprisingly, Bagel Company of Memphis didn't have any biscuits. It's a bagel shop. They'll be averaged out at 5 points. Bacon: My side of bacon was completely generous. There were four big slices on the plate. It was super crispy, but not terrible. Scrambled Eggs: You know that thing I just said about scrambled eggs being all one color? These eggs were fluffy and light, but a very uniform shade of yellow. They were alright, but nothing super special. Pancake: Bagel Company of Memphis' pancakes were about 7 wide. They were a little on the dry side, but they were warm and uneven like they had just been cooked. Grits: The grits at Bagel Company of Memphis were cheese grits. What that meant was that there was a cup of grits with some cheese poured on top. By the look and taste of the cheese, it was just step up from the stuff that gets squirted on chips at the fair. It does add some flavor, though. The texture of the grits was nice - they were thick and not too watery. Service: Bagel Company of Memphis has table service, but you get up to pay at the counter. My waitress was very efficient, but a little cold. The lady at the counter was super friendly and nice when she rang up my check. Atmosphere: The restaurant was fairly crowded. There were a lot of families and retired people eating bagels and chatting. It's the sort of place where people seem to sit and stay a while. (7 points) Price: My breakfast was $11, which seemed a little high. It's because the bacon and the grits are listed and priced as side items instead of included as part of a meal. This is the only place I've been so far that didn't have some kind of standard breakfast meal that included at least four of the five food items I'm out to try. (5 points)

My sister and I stopped by today for the first time. It's not evident when you walk in where to begin your experience as there was not wait staff to meet and greet. When we asked the first person we saw (who we later found out was the owner) he pointed and said "where it's always been". As a first-time patron I was not impressed. The saving grace in this episode was the friendly and informative lady behind the ordering counter. She saved the experience from being a total bust. Our sole purpose for the visit was to get bagels Again I was disappointed. I know this is Memphis and not LA or New York however I expected more from a place that prepares them fresh daily. I'm not keen on spending money where lack-luster customer service resides. And I may try again. Mr. Owner look into a little feng shui for your entrance.
(3)Misty R.
I love bread, it's my weakness. That's why I love the Bagel Company, they have the best bagels in town. Like Joynna said Memphis is no New York so our options are limited when it comes to bagels. The Bagel Company fills the void. The bagels are made daily from scratch on site. You can stop in for just a bag of bagels or have breakfast and lunch. It's tucked away off Poplar Ave in the Kroger parking lot. It's small inside and filled with Memphis pictures. This is the kind of place people come and sit awhile. They have regulars who have been coming for years. It's table service but you pay at the counter. The service is efficient but not overly friendly. Expect good food in a simple restaurant with simple service and you won't be disappointed. I love the skillet meals. They are filled with potatoes, eggs and your choice of meat served in an old fashioned skillet. It comes with a bagel. My husband loves the lox bagel- says it's the best anywhere smothered in cream cheese and fresh lox. Lunch offerings include a variety of sandwiches, wraps and soup. All of the sandwiches are served on fresh baked bread. My favorite is the Californian filled with turkey, avocado and sprouts.
(4)Goose R.
Big hearty delicious breakfast. Good service. Very pleased about it.
(4)Katie P.
This is a pretty solid place to have lunch. I've only been once for breakfast, and I was totally turned off because I ordered cheese grits and do you know what they brought me? Regular grits with a slice of American cheese on top. That's just not right. Other breakfast items usually look pretty appealing so I probably just made the wrong choice. But I'm pretty sure I've liked just about everything I've ordered for lunch...they serve stuff like sandwiches, wraps, salads, etc. I like that it's almost always crowded but I've never had trouble finding a seat. I actually think the service can be kind of slow at times and occasionally a little huffy, but not enough to bother me. In the Kirby and Poplar area, it's a good choice for lunch because it's pretty inexpensive and they have a lot to choose from, plus some dessert options as well. They do have fountain drinks, which is a must for me. Sounds weird, but the pickles and bagel chips they start you off with are addicting! Ask for cream cheese too. I think it costs a little extra but it completes the pickle/bagel chip experience. The Bagel Company is the kind of place I go to again and again because it's easy, comfortable, and reasonable.
(4)Christina C.
This is a great place to get breakfast or lunch! It is the only place I have found in Memphis that has [great] garlic bagels, too...but they have a large selection available if those aren't your thing. The service is generally quick, everyone is very friendly, and they give you a lot of food for what you pay.
(5)Rekia K.
Groupon brought me here. I actually walked in to this place not really expecting much. I had a $16 groupon (which only cost me $3...WIN) and me and my honey needed some breakfast. I ordered the ham omelet with hash browns and toast and got 4 bagels with 2 cream cheeses to go (had to burn the $16). The omelet is a 3 egg omelet so I got that for us to share. When I got home and opened the plate, I was a little taken aback at how large the serving was, definitely enough for us both. The next thing I noticed was I did not have hash browns, but home fries. Some would argue that these are the same difference but I beg to differ. Although I was kind of let down by the sight of the home fries, I will admit they were quite tasty. They were very crispy and well seasoned. The next thing that threw me was the only thing inside the omelet was ham and cheese. I quickly grabbed the menu I picked up to verify that was all that came inside, and it was. It says for .95 you can add fresh veggies, I clearly did not notice that while ordering. Anyway, the omelet was decent. Nothing special, but for $8.25 it is a pretty good deal and adding the veggies still does not make it a bad price considering 2 adults can get a hearty meal out of it. Now on to the bagels. They were mighty delish! I got banana nut, raisin cinnamon sugar, cranberry, and blueberry. I only grabbed 2 cream cheeses- cinnamon walnut and strawberry as the servings of those were huge as well I knew 2 would be more than enough. The bagels were fantastic and very fresh. Even day 2 they were not stale at all. They have a pretty large assortment of bagels, one of which being jalapeño cheddar which I hate I did not grab, as well as a bunch of different cream cheeses. Overall, the breakfast food was ok, but I can see us becoming regulars for the bagels. I bought another groupon too, I would not mind giving their lunch a try.
(4)Jolynna M.
Well this isn't New York and we don't have a bagel shop on every corner here like they do in the Big Apple. But we do have this one, and it's excellent. The Bagel Company has been around for about twenty years, but they changed owners not long ago and have made some changes to the place, especially the decor, which is bright and cheerful and showcases a little Memphis history in photographs on display. More than just bagels, this place offers full, traditional breakfasts with eggs and pancakes, etc.. And a full lunch menu with all sorts of salads, soups and sandwiches. But for me, it's all about the bagels. They have 16 flavors to choose from, and they're all so good, especially the Blueberry. And best part - they're all made from scratch, in house each day.
(4)Karen T.
The waitress told us that everything on the menu was delicious. We all ordered something different and everything was so good, I couldn't stop eating! We will definitely be back!
(5)Joe M.
It hard to figure out Yelp. Went to City East based on the 4-star rating. It was Thursday morning and the staff was very nice and attentive. But our Scramble and French Toast were average at best. French Toast was drier than I'm used to. The potatoes in the Scramble were also very dry and lacking in taste. Maybe it's the bagels that skew Yelp to give City East such a high rating. But lesson learned...star ratings leave a lot to interpretation.
(2)Chandler H.
Excellent bagels & the rest.
(5)Raymond B.
Updated the info on the business, as it 's on Poplar Ave, and not Poplar Pike (so, the Yelp team should be updating this soon). To find it now, stay on Poplar Ave, until Kirby, and turn into the Kroger parking lot area where you see the big McDonald's. You'll see the green and white facade of the City East Bagel & Grille. It's very much made in the classic east coast style diner. "Seat Yourself" sign, seasoned and sweet waitresses, a ruckus going on in the kitchen with metal spatulas clanging off a large griddle, and a pay up at the front register setup. Honestly, you can find this same setup at about 1,000 locations between Portland, ME and Baltimore, MD a mile or two off the I-95 corridor, but it's a little more rare in the Mid-South... so they certainly get some stars just for the setup. The food... bagels, omelets, bacon... all good, and avoids the overly greasy offerings that so many diners often have... great stuff. 5 stars probably would have been possible if it had something "unique" to it... but it is what it is, and it won't disappoint.
