I've been looking for an excuse to visit Bonehead's for a while now. I'm a huge fan of their copycat restaurant, Humdinger's and I wanted to see what the difference is. My daughter and I were on our own for dinner and found ourselves on east Memphis so we gave it a try. First off, I was taken aback by the fact that very few people were in Bonehead's on the Wednesday evening we ate there for a 6 o'clock dinner. Humdingers' is always packed. But they have a nice patio on the Macy's side of the building so Bonehead's gets points for that in my book. I liked the openness of the place although it was a bit sterile. However, the friendliness of the staff made up for that. The girl who took our order was very attentive and sincerely wanted to help my preteen daughter make the right choice of toppings for her dish. Grouper reminds my girl of the beach and that's what she had. The cashier suggested we go light on the seasonings since my girl doesn't like it spicy, next time, we'll go with no seasoning at all for her. She ate it but it was still too spicy for her taste. Triggerfish was the special and I loved mine. Just the right amount of spicyness for me and the piri piri mushrooms were tasty. Next time I'll have the cucumber dill for my topping as my dining companion did not like it and I did. I had the yummy grilled zucchini while my companion had French fries, of course. No complaints there. Each of us had yellow rice with our dish. I liked Bonehead's. Would I drive past Humdinger's, which is near my home, to eat at Bonehead's? No. But if you are looking for a healthy meal and love fish and are in east Memphis, go to Bonehead's. And when you sit on the patio, face south. You'll have a lovely view of Audubon Park.

Grilled seafood, sweet potato fries and strawberry cake!! It's just perfect!!! All food is healthy ad its not that expensive! Quality food and just a quick walk away from Macy's!!

Oh Bonehead's. I'm at a loss for words. I'm going to make the obvious comparison here and mention Humdingers. I am in love with Humdingers- if you haven't been there you are missing out. They have the same menu concept with a few minor differences. I love that I can get healthy food that is actually really delicious, quickly and at a reasonable price. The grilled veggies alone make the place and the fish is an added bonus. I foolishly thought Bonehead's would be the same. We had the shrimp appetizer, an order of tilapia and chicken tacos and grilled zucchini. The shrimp weren't deveined (huge no-no in my book) and still had the shells attached. Not one or two- but the entire order. I've never experienced a fried shrimp still in the shell- let me tell you, it's not an experience you need to have in your lifetime. I would chalk this up to a mistake if I hadn't read it happened to another patron as well. The tilapia and chicken tacos were heavily comprised of coleslaw, so much so that the meat was more of an after thought. The shells on the tacos are flour, but they aren't heated. They were cold and turned pretty doughy with the mixture of sauce and slaw folded inside. I was pretty grossed out by the entire experience. I'm pretty sure I won't be back here again, not when I know Humdinger's offers an almost identical menu, for a similar price that actually tastes good.

Service was great! Taste was great! However, the Greek salad was made with iceberg lettuce. Not the best choice.

This is my go-to place for a fast, healthy lunch on weekdays. It's fast casual, and if you're an office drone, you can get in and out in under an hour. Bonehead's offers fast, healthy, tasty food. I have some favorites that I rarely vary from: grilled chicken, grilled asparagus, the sweet potato wedges, the Greek salad with salmon, and for a high calorie treat, the sweet potato fries. If you're a regular, they'll remember you and your order. :) It's usually not crowded at lunch, which is such a bonus for me. They offer parking from the front and back. Parking is more plentiful on the bank side, next to Oak Court Mall.

Lived in Memphis for a good while, and I've lived close to this location for about a year now. And I'm kicking myself that today was the first time I've ever been to Boneheads. It was a slow, Saturday mid-afternoon, but the staff was friendly, the food was still made fresh and it tasted fantastic. I'll be returning.

I should follow my first instinct always. There were no customers On Saturday night and the folks in the open kitchen did not instill confidence in me on ordering. Skip this one and I'm sure it won't be open very long.

Mmmmm I really liked this place! I've heard about this famous "piri piri" style chicken chain and when I stumbled across the location in Memphis, I knew what I would be having for lunch. Location is spotlessly clean with very solicitous service. You order at the counter and pay about $8-$10 for a sit-down restaurant-quality meal. I ordered the boneless chicken breast (also comes in half and whole bone-in chickens, but I was actually attempting to be healthful), and was cautioned just to have the "hot" piri piri sauce (rather than the extra hot). It came with a side of al dente rice (I appreciate well-prepared rice, especially at fast-casual spots) and two generous length-wise slabs of perfectly grilled zucchini (healthful, fresh, smoky grill-marked veggie perfection). I loved my meal and was absolutely full and satisfied. I received it quickly and it was fresh and delicious. I really loved the zucchini and the piri piri sauce was indeed sweaty-hot (I definitely don't think I could handle the extra hot). I didn't think to ask if they sell their sauces by the bottle or I would definitely have purchased one. I also appreciated that it wasn't just a greasy "buffalo-style" style sauce (I sampled the lemon sauce and it wasn't as much to my liking). I will definitely return the next time I am in Memphis.

Delicious and healthy! Had salmon, rice, and grilled zucchini. Why have i never eaten here before! It's good and the price is reasonable. Didn't go at lunch so it was quiet and service was fast. Sweet tea is only so so, but everything else was great. Staff was friendly and helped me decide on a great dish.

This place is getting four stars because they deserve better than three. They are a solid 3.5 so I rounded up. The fact is, Humdinger's (VERY similar) is better but Boneheads served us two really good meals today for lunch. Reasonably fast and fresh food. We got the appetizer shrimp which was quite plentiful. Also the grilled asparagus (excellent), grilled sweet potatoes (also good) and the zucchini (blah!). The portabella sandwich was better than most, and was impressive in both appearance and flavor. The atmosphere is ok. Dining area could have been cleaner. I might be persuaded to eat there again, but I am not a enthusiastic fan. Memphis has too many five star places to bother with repeat visits to the better than average establishments, but in fairness Boneheads is better than the 2.5 star average they currently have on yelp.

Walked in and the cashier was on the phone. She never got off the phone to take the order... Just put it down for a sec and asked what she could get for us. After a few seconds another guy came up and she asked if he could take our order (I guess so she could talk on her phone.) It is 6:30 on a weeknight... You'd think they'd be pretty busy but no one else is in this place. Walk over to get a drink and there are gnats flying around the sweet tea... I wonder how long it's been since they've cleaned those containers. I can't imagine what the kitchen looks like. I would leave if I wasn't in a hurry. I won't be back.

Decent seafood at moderate prices. Piri Piri sauce enhances the dishes. Grilled fish or shrimp or wraps or tacos, nice for lunch. The parking can get dicey, but once in the establishment, there's plenty of space. The staff is friendly and helpful.

We have been there twice and have had very different experiences. The first visit earned a 5-star review: from the moment we walked in the door the atmosphere was welcoming, the staff were friendly and helpful with their recommendations, and the the half-chicken dinner and mixed taco plates were perfectly cooked and well-flavored. The extra hot piri-piri sauce had a really great flavor but wasn't overly spicy. We went again today, and were a little disappointed. The taco plate now has only two tacos (before there were three), the chicken breast was overcooked and rubbery, and the fries tasted like they'd been sitting for a while. In addition, the staff weren't as friendly and there were some cleanliness issues - dirty silverware and serving counter. The calamari, on the other hand, was perfectly cooked--and tasted great with or without the sweet chili sauce! I'm hoping that our second experience was atypical for this Bonehead's, location, and we'll give them another shot--but definitely recommend choosing the half-chicken instead of the chicken breast.

Try the half chicken dinner! Best meal there!

I used to live in Atlanta where I went to Bonehead's Atlantic Station a regular basis, but this one in Memphis is a hot mess. How do you burn fish...and still serve it? The Coca Cola was flat from the dispenser. They offered a Groupon, but one can understand why. It was just yuck! First time going to the one in Memphis and LAST.

If you want a great experience with a flavor that isn't ordinary , try this place. The dish , grouper with cucumber sauce , that I enjoyed was great. I could see that this is a family operation and I could applaud them for a great experience. The setting looks a bit like you are about to experience fast food but in reality , get ready for a first class dinner. Great hospitality ! Stuart H

I like the Bonehead's chain's concept- an interesting back story, casual, order at the counter, relatively fast service, friendly staff. The menu looks great, featuring some tasty appetizers, burgers, sandwiches, and seafood at reasonable prices. We had the American catfish sandwich, which featured a nice catfish fillet fried without batter; and the 3 taco combo. My companion really enjoyed her sandwich. The tacos were tasty and fairly hefty in Piri Piri Chicken, tallapia, and shrimp. The shrimp was overcooked, tallapia satisfactory, and the chicken the best of the 3. Sweet potato fries were very good. Bonehead has some of its roots in Africa which is where the piri piri (a wild pepper) comes from. I am not a huge fan of chain-type restaurants, but this place has a good feel, and lots of potential. I will be back to try more menu items.

The fish and chips were really good. Nice and moist. My mom asked for the chips crisp. The guy says "you know crisps are fries right?" I wish the salad had some more goat cheese in it. It said it came with goat cheese which I really had to go searching for. Otherwise everything was delicious. We went during their downtime and I guess they were bored because they kept coming over and asking us if we needed anything or needed our drinks refilled. Um..no. I sort of like filling my own iced tea so I can get the proportions right. Every time they saw my glass near empty they came over and tried to grab it. I know they were trying to be helpful but I found it a little annoying. Overall the food was good and the place was very clean.

Ok, a friend purchased a coupon book for me and Boneheads was one of the restaurants. I had seen the place many times and wanted to try cause of the fish. My partner ordered the Grouper and said it was okay, I tasted and it was too fishy for me...but I ordered the PiriI Piri half chicken(So I could share) and it was great. The sauce was spicy with lots of flavor and the chicken was tender and moist. The sweet potato fries were really good and the Greek salad looked like Greek cold slaw but it taste great. Our meal was 17.87 but only because we had half off coupon it would have been 25.00. And no appetizer, it would have been 35.00. Go try it out if you got 40.00

Well, on a Sunday night it was lonely/dreary. When we walked in there were many tables not bussed but hey the guy was watching football on the big screen - priorities I guess. Strike One. So ok on to the counter. Two entrees and an appetizer... $35!!!! at a walkup counter fast food place!!! and then we were overcharged for drinks.. Strike two. So on to the food. Ok I guess. Too much spice for us but that's a personal taste. Sandwiches are all cold bread and small fish. Calamari was good. Shrimp on a skewer is all black and peppery. Where's the shrimp? Strike Three.

I had their Chicken Tacos and it was A-OK But the seasoned fries that came with it, OMG more like seasoning w/ a side of fries! I couldn't even eat it. I took a few bites and felt like I was going to over dose on Sodium.

expensive, meh...and you don't get much! I got the grouper sandwich, which was not as fresh as I would have liked, (I could smell it coming out before I saw it!) and a very thin piece of fish, & at OVER $10 for the sandwich. Served on a huge overpowering roll and very very thin tomato slices & small sad piece of lettuce. I paid additional 99cents for deluxe side dish of asparagus...I got 4 very small spears. I asked why it was sooo expensive, owner swore it weighed out correctly to the size portion you are supposed to get. Sheesh...that's close to a $1 a spear. It was tasty and gone it a very short itme. The owner had offered to switch it out for me...but I didn't have time or will to wait for something else. My Hubby got piri-piri chicken sandwich and it was a good size and he liked it...but still expensive at $9. He got the caesar salad side dish and it was soooo small they served it in an individual ramekin dish! The place was not busy at all...makes me wonder if a lot of people think "Meh. I've experienced better." too
