The decor is cool, but the sushi doesn't quite live up the hip and trendy vibe of the restaurant. I came here twice, once to dine in, the other for takeout. When I dined at Bluefin, I came with colleagues and tried a wide variety of their sushi, sashimi, and rolls. The quality of the the fish was... fine. Nothing special, but really not bad. I would stay away from their special rolls. I don't tend to enjoy rolls with cream cheese, but even the ones without this blasphemous ingredient were just ok. The seaweed salad, however, was excellent. I suggest ordering it with octopus. Both times I came, the service was slow slow slow. Took forever to order when I was there, despite the restaurant being almost empty. When I ordered takeout, and they said it would be twenty minutes, I showed up twenty minutes later, and waited twenty more minutes! Not great. Overall, Bluefin is a sushi joint that should focus a little less on their presentation and a little more on sushi and service.

Went a couple of weeks ago for the first time. I had been wanting to try this place for quite a while. We were not disappointed, we both enjoyed it. It took a while to get the feel for how the restaurant works, you can order off a "standard" menu that includes sushi and asian dishes, or a sushi menu, and every now and then your server comes along and tempts you with fresh sushi of various types. We ended up ordering off all the menus, and partaking in the fresh rolls. We ended up eating more than we should have and bringing home the last of our main course. Probably my biggest reservation is cost - I found it a bit pricey.

The weekend at Ernie's roll is hands down my favorite sushi roll in Memphis, no contest. The rest of the rolls do not disappoint and are always made expertly and presented beautifully. Fresh ginger and quality wasabi are a nice complement that seem to be lacking in many Memphis sushi establishments. The house ginger salad is another favorite. Decent sake selection too. They used to have THE best fish tacos I have ever had, but for some reason took them off the menu (despite lots of protests). It is a shame that the exquisite attention to detail by the kitchen is not matched by the other side of the house. The service is always predictably mediocre and quite slow (don't expect your water to be re-filled). It often feels like the place is understaffed. The atmosphere is trendy and upscale with a very clean feel. Take advantage of the happy hour specials to make the experience more affordable.

If you need a break from the fried food an BBQ gluttony that is Memphis cuisine, definitely give Bluefin a chance. We ordered the miso soup, soup of the day(tomato basil), assorted sashimi, roll of the day, and the veggie flatbread. Everything was delicious! I have to say I was exceptionally impressed by the tomato soup and flatbread as I didn't expect non-sushi, non-Japanese dishes to be so great in this place. It is a perfect place to take a group of both sushi lover and less adventurous eaters. My mom doesn't like sushi and can be all around picky so it was great to eat some raw fish in a place she could also enjoy. Nice wine and beer selection too. And the restaurant is absolutely beautiful! Definitely recommended.

We discovered this place thanks to a friend's recommendation and had a perfectly pleasant experience all around. It was a nice large space, and even though there were just 3 people in our party you could easily come here with a much larger group. We ordered off the sushi menu, and just about everything was excellent. We tried the edamame, the blue fin tekka roll, the spicy shrimp roll, the kani kani and the rock and roll shrimp to name a few. Everything was delicious. The server was a little odd, but attentive and sweet nonetheless, and the prices were exactly on point to what you'd want to pay for the food and experience. We would definitely go back again.

I have not gone to a sushi place in Memphis and this one set the bar high. The food was great and I had a great time. The good about this place is that we were allowed to bring our own bottles of wine. There is a $10 fee per bottle for bringing your own drinks. The pizza was ok and the sushi was great. The cheaper sushi was not that good but the specialty sushi was awesome. I believe it had more the do with the ingredients of the sushi and not the chefs. You get what you pay for so buy good sushi. The bad part is that the service was lame. It took forever for the waitress to bring us ice for the wine bottles. I hardly ever saw our waitress. We had a great time and everything went good.

Went there prior to a concert to get some dinner. My buddy just wanted a burger, but the waiter told him they were sold out of the meat. Thinking to myself that would be because they did not order enough. Nope, they did not thaw enough out because they had a order foe 20 earlier. Hey Bluefin, how about fresh not frozen!
(3)Mike R.
I had low expectations of sushi in Memphis to begin with (hence the second star), but wow.. This was really bad. 1) rice, I can discount fish quality due to being away from the ocean, but please learn how to make sushi rice. I think they used regular rice with too much vinegar, which made it too sticky. It was also undercooked, which made it hard, on top of it it was colder then fish. 2) most fish was previously frozen 3) toro was the highlight, but they did not cut it right, so it was falling apart Never again!

Nice atmosphere. Not so good food. crab dip fondue was fishy...call it drab dip. my chicken skewers were not cooked enough. terrible. Tasting all sorts of food around. Not impressed. Service slow. Waited 15 minutes for another glass of wine. Not to return.

This place is special- best sushi in Memphis and cool atmosphere for out of town guests and special occasions! I wanna have a bada$$ party in one of the semi private areas. Great place for cocktails with the girls - the Memphis Rita - ay carumba! Go there. Love!!! Stevan will take good care of you and yours

This place is hugely overrated and overpriced. Their sushi is okay, but nothing to write home about. Sadly, that's the only part of their menu even worth mentioning. The ambiance of this place is what sells it. It's hip, modern, cool...you'll find a lot of young Memphis here. Their staff does their job, but, again, nothing to write home about...they do what they need to do and never go above and beyond. And, as I said, the sushi is just meh. Fun place to go though if you're looking for a certain atmosphere and clientele.

Bluefin Memphis? I'm just not a fan. I've had REAL sushi from the masters in London and Vancouver. When you know what real sushi is supposed to taste like, you push the plate away when it's not top notch! For years, I thought sushi just made me sick, but then I realized that I hadn't really HAD SUSHI. When I did, I understood. Just don't do it to yourself. --- And let me TELL you about the bar...Oh boy, I saw the bartender open the gallon jar of olives, pour a MOUND of salt in the jar, fill it to the brim with water from the soda gun, RIGHT in front of me, shake it up (like he was really doing something), and put the bottle back in the fridge. I'm a former bartender (in my previous lifetime), and I said, "What are you doing?" He said, "I'm 'reconstituting' the olives. I'll do this like 5 times before I get another jar." I was shocked. He, in essence was 'making' new olive juice for the dirty martinis, but it was all a sham. So, when customers order dirty martinis, they are getting gin or vodka, and salt water (NO OLIVE JUICE)...Yuck!! --- And then...5 minutes later, a customer from the other side of the restaurant ordered gingo or sake. I saw the bartender pour the sake out of the bottle into the sake porcelain jug. And since the sake filled up maybe 50% of the jug, he used the soda gun again (you know, the soda gun from the olive reconstitution situation) to fill it all the way to the top with water. That was such a horrible experience that I came for 2 for 1 happy hour sake, and I left after the 1st one. I didn't even want the 2nd. No thanks. Never going there again.

Nice decor. A very nice sushi menu featuring many unique rolls. However, the regular menu is more of an after-thought. Presented in a plastic sleeve (like a diner), I was not really sure what was an appetizer, salad or entree. My table of four were all disappointed with their selection (C+ from all). The restaurant recovered with dessert; a very tasty bread pudding and a filo-wrapped warm brownie. If we return it will be for an "after dinner elsewhere" dessert or for the sushi.

For Memphis, this place is completely adequate. I caveat that anyplace landlocked can only expect so much from their sushi, but Bluefin certainly tries. The surf and turf roll was an interesting combination. I brought my 2 year old, which threw the staff somewhat, but they were able to dig up a high chair and a soda cup with a lid. The ambience is not geared toward children and families at all, but my little one is a sushi fiend, so I decided to give it a whirl. Service was decent and the rolls we had were pretty darn tasty, if not jumping-right-out-of-the-ocean fresh.

Went for lunch. The service is brutally bad and if you order off the menu, expect a 45 minute wait, even if there are only a few tables occupied. Will never go back. First time I've ever left zero for a tip. The waitress couldn't have cared less where my food was, in fact, we had to ask someone else to go check on it. My water was never refilled by her, either. I ordered my Wagyu Burger medium well and it came out like a hockey puck. I understand that this type of beef is leaner and more expensive, but my "burger" was the size of a slider. Add the way overdone cooking, and you get a rather mediocre meal. The fries were ok, but I think they were frozen. Unless you like sushi, don't go here.

Went in the only time for lunch. Nice place, very large and almost takes away from the atmosphere they are trying to create. Asked about the sushi, they rolled over a tray with pre made items. I asked for a roll without shellfish (since I'm allergic) the waitress said the tuna roll is here but the others all have shell fish. I asked if they could make a few others for me without shellfish. She replied... Sushi has shellfish and these are the rolls we have. I said ok then .... Give me 1 tuna roll (it may have been salmon...it was a month or so ago) and the tomato soup. A coworker got soup too. Soup was great but really... "all sushi has shellfish".. We'll not where I'm from and not in Japan. Made for a good laugh though. Big turnoff and if we had more time we would have left. Still tipped well... The sushi cart lady was not the waitress. The waiter was nice. Oh yeah... She never brought my roll. Good thing because I lost my appetite anyways. No need to return. I'm not usually this picky but I was just coming in to eat lunch.... Go figure... You think they would not mind satisfying a customer. And they were not busy at all.... Wonder why?

I stepped out for lunch today, hoping to enjoy some fresh air. I figured sushi can usually be made pretty quickly, so I ran down to Bluefin. It always seemed nice when I walked by, and it's been in business for long enough that I assumed it must be good. My assumption was wrong. I went in and asked the hostess if it'd be OK to sit outside. She grabbed a menu and a setting and took me out. They have a really nice little area to sit in, so I allowed myself to get a little hopeful that this was going to be a good experience. I looked over the menu and decided on some sushi. When the girl came around I ordered 2 rolls and a few pieces of nigiri. And I waited. And waited. And waited. After about 15 minutes I overheard the ladies next to me complaining that they'd been waiting forever for their sushi. They said it had been over 30 minutes. My hopes were vanishing quickly. A few minutes later, the hostess comes out with this huge tray of sushi, so I assumed mine was on there. She served the girls a few items, then turned and asked what I wanted. I told her I'd ordered, but inquired what this was. Apparently it was the "Sushi Happy Hour" that they have where they bring around a tray of rolls and you just pick what you want for a discounted price. I mentioned that neither she or the server bothered to tell me about this, and she mumbled something and left. I waited another 10 minutes or so before asking if I could just get my sushi to go. After a few minutes, the server brought out one of the rolls and the nigiri. I checked my bill, and she just hadn't bothered to ring in the second roll. I gave her my card and she went inside. Then I realized I'd been given no chopsticks or soy sauce, so I went inside where the sushi chef took care of me, putting the to go box in a bag with soy sauce and chopsticks. When I got back to my office and ate the food was OK, but the service at the restaurant was so atrrocious that I couldn't recommend this place to an enemy. I'm not sure if there's another sushi place downtown, but I recommend you go there instead of this place if you're looking for a good meal.

I'm not a big fan of sushi, but my travel partner is, so we decided to give this place a shot, as it was right around the corner from our hotels. I really enjoyed the quirky sushi titles (Kim Jung Eel? You slay me!) I enjoyed some crab dip and a personal cheese pizza. Not something you'd usually get at a place like this, but everything was surprisingly good. Even the crab dip, and being from Maryland, I take my crab dip very seriously. I had a drink called the Strawberry Shortcake that seemed like it should have been good but just...wasn't. Service was great, though. I'd definitely go back.

Bluefin bills itself as a lounge rather than a restaurant. The interior is sleek (painted in blues and grays), and the couches in the waiting area are so big, they border on being beds. The menu reflects the lounge theme - the entrees, salads and desserts take up about two pages while the drink specials get three. I tried a Lotus, a chilled watermelon vodka drink that tasted as pink as it looked. It was what would happen if Jolly Ranchers were made with booze, then melted down. Bluefin is a part of the Sekisui family, so some of the rolls are similar to the ones you'll find there. However, Bluefin's entree menu is more limited (and fancier), and some of the rolls are a little more experimental. The Japanista ($11) is a fairly simple roll, but a little more adventurous than a California roll. It was stuffed with spicy crab and avocado and topped with seared tuna, green onions and sweet chili sauce. Apparently, all of those things combined result in a sort of smoky, barbecue flavor. The Bluefin roll ($10) was my favorite of the three I tried. It was also the most difficult to transfer from plate to mouth - the bottom of the soy paper wrap kept getting stuck to the plate, spilling avocado, cucumber, crab, cream cheese and pear slices. It was still tasty, though, sweet and spicy with a nice crunch. I ordered the Eat a Peach roll ($8) because it looked like one of the more interesting rolls on the menu - snow crab, avocado and grilled peaches topped with salmon, scallions and a balsamic reduction. While it was fresh and summery, I wish the peaches had been more prominently featured, maybe laying across the top of the salmon instead of buried inside the roll. I'd definitely make a trip back to try some of the Memphis-themed rolls like the crunchy crab Redbirds roll and the spicy, kimchee-topped MPD roll. Bluefin is fairly casual during the day, it's less kid-friendly at night. They've got a small patio on Main that's perfect for people watching, and it's just a few doors down from a trolley stop. If you're headed there on a Friday or Saturday night, you can make reservations via their website.

This was one of those places that was on my list to try... we luckily got in on New Year's Eve.. from a fluke, a cancellation right as we walked up. Let me tell you the food was awesome. It was even better than I had heard it might be. My husband and I split their salmon dinner and it was a great portion and incredible dinner. The sauce was out of this world. We licked our plates clean:).. The atmosphere and the different room environments even adds to this being a must on your list. We will defintely eat their again.

I had a date (another miracle) with a lady that has lived in Memphis for a couple of decades and like many in Memphis, consider downtown some strange other world. I had her park at my place (secure, gated parking) and took her to dinner via trolley. We got off at the Peabody Place trolley stop and checked out the Majestic Grill (good spot) and then went in Blue Fin. I've been to Blue Fin a couple of times prior to this night and had Sushi every time before. I didn't know about their remodel until I went in. Well, they have converted the bar into a Sushi bar. Very nice. The previously open kitchen was now much more evidently open. My date commented that it had a very "New York feel". She was right but if Blue Fin was in New York, the tables would be about 9 inches apart (got to pay for that expensive ass real estate). The tables are nicely spaced. So where did the bar go (I was nearly having withdrawals)? They have expanded into a long, narrow space next door. Very light and inviting. Great beer list, big list of sake's. I say a big list, because I don't know a damn thing about sake. (I've tasted some that are mildly interesting, but I just don't get it. Lord, I've tried to drink everything on the planet, but sometimes you just can't get to everything!) Good martini list. My date ordered something called "Ichi The Killer". Cute. Made with a bunch of stuff I don't recognize. Light green on top, and a reddish, cranapple-type color on the bottom. Honestly, it looked damned suspicious just sitting there. Kind of like nuclear waste. She tasted it and didn't fall over dead so I decided I could risk it. Good, not (too) sweet. Surprisingly light. Nice choices on the wine list. Everything (except for a couple bottles of semi big time champagne) appears to be available both by the glass and the bottle. Something I like a LOT! Nope, there are no bargains, but there seldom is. Also, since this is primarily a fish restaurant, don't expect a broad line of reds. They are there and they're decent. There is a Malbec Rose from Argentina that is pretty damn tasty. The menu is really interesting, here is what I ordered: BARBEQUED OYSTERS WITH WASABI BUTTER. Came in a wooden box with hot stones. Droolingly delicious and a really nice presentation. CHEF NICK'S MIXED GRILL SPECIAL This one is a 'trio' of three preparations of fish (all three served left to right on a long, narrow plate) and they are: * Pan Seared Mussels - house-made parpadelle pasta and grilled tomato and clam nage * Pan Seared Grey Snapper - with grilled zucchini and squash, roasted olive butter * Opah Crudo - preserved lemon, capers and olive oil, with a grilled baguette The mussels were delicious over the pasta (think a wider fettuccini noodle). If you want to really impress your server, you pronounce this as par-pah-deli. The juice (that's a nage (nahge), which comes from the French cooking term 'à la nage'. This means poaching food, usually seafood and then serving the whole thing like a stew) in the bottom of the bowl was terrific. The Snapper was a nice portion of fish; just a little overcooked. It is damn hard to get fish cooked just right and there is a very narrow window of perfectness doneness. I've cooked a lot of fish and you have to stand over it and constantly check it to get it perfect. Its hard to do at home, much less a busy restaurant kitchen. The Opah Crudo was simply sliced raw fish (Opah is a type of Pacific Ocean fish and Crudo means 'raw' in Italian). If you like sashimi, you'll love this one. The lemon and capers give it a nice balance. My date ordered: A SUSHI ROLL (I can't remember what this one was called) Crab stick (fake crabmeat) wrapped in cucumber and served with Ponzu. I'm not a big fan of fake crabmeat. The Ponzu (a combo of citrus juice juice and soy) is a really nice balance. KUSU WAGYU STRIP - with shitake potato risotto, pearl onions and a veal demi glaze. Don't you love it when your date orders the most expensive entrée on the menu? Anyway this is a New York strip steak from the same breed of cattle that produces Kobe beef. Very rich, very tender, VERY good. The risotto was well prepared as were the pearl onions and the demi glaze (this is NOT a glaze, the word is glacé [glah-say] and it is a sauce reduced until it is a glaze). Overall Really happy with the cooking. What I don't like are some of the errors that I saw with the expediter and the front of the house staff (i.e. bartenders and servers). Here's an example; there were six oysters in the appetizer. One of them was about the size of a marble. I can understand (just barely) a busy cook sending that to the expediter (who calls all of the orders and then checks every plate before it leaves). I don't understand how he/she misses it, and then the runner from the kitchen to the bar misses it and then the bartender who served me the plate missed it. I sent the one oyster back & it was quickly replaced with two perfect ones. Great!

The parking at the Peabody garage is right across the street and very convenient. That was me of the reasons we chose this place. It has a reputation as a good spot for parties. In fact owner/management want to capitalize on this. When I called to make a reservation for my birthday party I was asked how many people I expect, I said 12. Then I was told that I will be charged $40 for every now show. I have never experienced that before.... So, to avoid this fee I invited more and got exact number of people to show up. This is the case when more is better, however I do think that they are going a little over board with this particular rule. Why do I have to be concerned about who can and can't make it to my party? The whole reason I decided to have a party out and not at my place is to be able to relax and celebrate without any worries. The sitting arrangement was not optimal either. The casual lay around sofas with oversized pillows would have worked better if they weren't placed on the way to the bar. They need to put regular tables there. The cork fee is $10.00 and the waiter was very polite and cooperative. We brought a "wine basket" with us and did not let anything to get in the way of our celebration. But it could have been arranged better. If you call for a party reservation - specify that you want a table or a party room. The food was okay. But their coffee was terrible. We did give a large tip to the waiter because he was good! And the manager even gave away one of his flower vases to go home with my flowers. But overall, I expected a better sitting arrangement.

The past time in will be the last time in as the kitchen dropped the ball on the hot food. What can I say? Sushi is not the only food on the menu. Just sayin'.
(2)Elle S.
Oh bluefin....I have a love hate relationship with this place. The sushi is good.... not the best but good, but it takes FOREVERRRRRRR to get ur food. It does not matter if there are 2 of you or 20 of you they take forever and more if there are 20 of you. For such a big place why dont you get more sushi chefs? Why bluefin owners whyyyyyyy??????
(3)Tanya T.
Bluefin is a trendy and modern sushi place with a very relaxed vibe. I've gone for lunch and dinner, although I generally order the same items...seaweed salad and sushi rolls. Yes, I am a huge roll fan, and those served at Bluefin are always fresh and yummy. The ambiance is laid-back and there's a good-sized bar and pool tables for those interested. The music is good, although somewhat loud. Don't expect huge portions but the food is great, although a bit pricey.
(3)Katie K.
Hands Down Best Sushi in the Memphis area! Not only is the sushi awesome it is so fresh! I find it hard to find fresh sashimi not living near the water but Bluefin does a perfect job at making me believe I am eating near the coast. My favorite aspect of Bluefin is that they are open for late night! Forget the greasy fast food/pizza! Wouldnt you rather weigh in the morning and not feel guilty about what you ate for late night! I would atleast because lets face it there are times we are going to give in to that temptation of eating late! Great atmosphere for date, party or just a family get together. I come here atleast two times a month! You are missing out if you have not visited Bluefin.

Let me start by listing my sushi reviewing credentials- Sushi is my favorite food and I spent the last 12 years living in California where great (and not so great) sushi abounds. During this time I probably ate sushi at least once every other week. So, I've been to Bluefin twice- both times on a Saturday night. The first time I went, I nearly cried tears of joy for having found a good sushi restaurant in Memphis. I imagined myself coming back on a weekly basis for my sushi fix. Two weeks later, I was crying again - but this time out of disappointment. The sushi was bad. I didn't even finish eating some of it. So, I'll probably give bluefin one more chance. But there's nothing I hate more than an unreliable sushi place. I'm not willing to spend money to find out whether it's a good day for sushi or not.
(3)Paul C.
First off, I feel that because seafood is better when you're geographically closer to the ocean, you get better fish. Also noted is the population demographic; if you have a bunch of fish loving people in an area, you'll get better fish. So in essence, this place deserves 2 stars overall when compared to sushi places in general and 3 stars specifically in Memphis, as Memphis is not close to the ocean and there really aren't sushi and sashimi loving people here. Decor: Cool decor, definitely very nice, great for a date or any business oriented meal. Music can be funny as they played techno and house the whole time; if you check out their website you'll know what I mean. Sushi/Sashimi: We got the Sashimi assortment, which comes with 21 pieces for 23 dollars. The fish itself was okay at best. Some pieces were slightly fishy, but nothing bad at all. The biggest issue I had with the fish was the cut; I have no clue if their cutting was because of cost saving measures or that they didn't seem to have chefs who knew how to cut. The standard cut for sashimi is 3/4 inch thick and the thin cut is 1/8 inch thick. The cut of the sashimi here was around 1/4 to 3/8 inch thick. The cut of the sushi really affects the experience of the fish; that's why it's important to have sashimi and sushi cut correctly. Service: Our servers were very attentive and helpful, however, we were warned that we should order a cooked appetizer because the sushi wait was 25-30 minutes. This was on a Wednesday night; it wasn't packed at all. I mean, you go to a sushi place to eat sushi and not cooked food right? Overall if you are not a big fan of sushi and like an Asian fusion restaurant, I would recommend this place, as some of the food that I saw other people getting looked and smelled pretty good. If you are strictly coming for fish, I'd just save my money and go to another place with better options.
(2)Julie H.
I went here with a nice group of friends to celebrate their 22 yr Wedding anniversary. It is the first time I ever ate Sushi and liked it so they get stars for that! I had the spicy sushi. I also had the house salad and beef tenderloin which was absolutley delish! I will go back! My husband ordered fried calamari as an appetizer and it was sooo good! Our service was very good as well.

My wife and I love Blue Fin. Its fun and the food is really good. Whenever we are downtown we always try to go.
(4)Sara M.
I love Bluefin!!! When I lived in Memphis I would eat here at least 4 days a week!!! Having returned to Memphis recently, I threw a bachelorette dinner in there lounge area!! Everyone was so helpful and pleasant!! The dinner went smoothly, since we had 13 ladies with different checks!! The host staff was perfect and so accommodating for the party. Also Dale the bartender is amazing behind the bar! Always swift and has a perfect cocktail in hand! Thanks Bluefin for being one of the only places I will ALWAYS return to with new people, family and friends!!
(5)Johnson C.
First off, I was amazed how hip and upscale this restaurant looked. However, the sushi we ordered was terrible, medicore, and expensive. The rice was too sticky and rolls literally fell apart. The blue fin sashimi was delish but poorly cut and also very expensive ($15 for 2 pieces). The service was also VERY poor, the waiter did not give any refills on our water and only took our order and presented our check. Bluefin need better employees, it seems the sushi chefs weren't skilled or knowledgeable about making sushi or slicing sashimi. The only good thing about this place is the atmosphere, otherwise this place is overpriced garbage. Also, who goes to a Bluefin and orders a pizza? Really?
(1)Ben P.
The first time I went, great! The seating was cool, the environment was super nice and modern, the food was top notch right along with the service. Second time I went, all was decent, but the service was way behind and the seating was worse. Food quality was weaker. The third time I went the atmosphere was terribly loud and obnoxious, the service was pathetic, and the food wasn't great. At this point I think this restaurant has incredible potential, but for now is lacking. I may try it again in a few years, but as of 2012 I'm a lost customer.
(3)Tracy W.
Went tonight and the place was packed. Unfortunately that meant we waited close to 15 minutes just to get our drink order in, not a great way to set the pace for the rest of the meal. Not surprisingly our drinks were empty most if the meal. Literally not one refill on my wife's tea! We barely knew we had a waiter. We stuck to sushi this trip and we weren't disappointed in the food but the service was extremely bad. I am sitting here with a table full of empty plates and glasses wishing I had a dessert. Sad really. All in all the meal was good but I would steer clear of this place on the weekends as the service is horrible.

Will never go to again. 4/6/2013 was our first time going. Was not impressed. My husband and I walk in and are standing at the hostess stand holding a cake. We must have stood there for about 5 min while the two host argued over a mistake that one of them made, they didn't even say hello or we will be right with you! If one of our friends hadn't walked by we would still be standing there. We sat in one of the areas with the long low tables and pillows. What a dump. The pillows were dirty, we were right by the restroom and it was hot and stuffy. Was not impressed by the rude manager that was on duty nor the overpriced menu for just ok food. I wouldn't waste my time going there again, I will stick with my friendly neighborhood sushi places.

Not bad, rice needs some work. not sure why they are charging so much it is just not worth the price. service at the sushi bar was poor.

Last night I went to another, less fantastic, Sushi establishment in town, and about halfway through dinner I found myself wishing I was at Bluefin. Located on Main Street in the downtown area, it's a great place to meet up with friends or a date and then check out other venues afterward, like a Redbirds game or a show at the Orpheum. Or even just a stroll down Beale. But back to the Sushi. It's first rate, high quality and artistically presented. I always get the Sashimi combo - very very good. They have some great rolls too, including a daily chef's special. In addition to the sushi, this place also has a really great selection of appetizers including pizzas, hummus and a super delicious Crab Fondue, which suddenly I am really craving. The atmosphere is swank and hip. The music gets a little loud on the weekends and I don't much care for that, so I usually go on a week night where it's quieter and a little less crowded.

I had such high hopes for you Bluefin, nestled in the midst of some wonderful Main Street establishments, with the trolley rushing past the cobble stoned parkway. I so wanted to walk in, devour your sushi offerings and quickly become your biggest fan, but alas that did not happen. Nope, far from it actually. Our neighbor called us up on Sunday to see if we would like to accompany him to Bluefin and be his "wing-man/woman couple-date" with a new gal he met (on a side note- how cool is it to be someones go-to double date couple! Major points to us for being the type of twosome that makes you feel at home on your first-date experience. Yes I'm totally tooting my own horn. TOOT!) We arrived at Bluefin and were promptly seated in one of their half round booths. And THANK the Lord for that seating arrangement. Upon walking into Bluefin for the first time, I was a little taken aback by the seating options. There are a few of the booths we partook in, the rest of the seating is at the bar, sushi-bar, in a back party room area reserved for groups or placed on a very uncomfortable couch with a low-coffee table to house your drinks and food. Can I think of a worse way to eat sushi? Nope. Take note my friends, this is never a good way to eat sushi in front of a guy on a first date. You will inevitably end up with sushi on your lap and a crick in your neck and back from bending over the lowness that is this table. I would like to first point out the good, our waitress. Her name was Carrie, and she was the type of waitress I'd like to hire to follow me to every establishment and serve me every meal I'd eat out for the rest of time. She was educated on their menu, super sweet, had hella conversation skills and I felt like I'd known her for years. Props to you Carrie- this review in no way reflects upon you. My husband and I ordered edamame and tako salad as our appetizers. The edamame was great- but how can you mess that up- served up warm with huge chunks of sea salt and lime wedges. The tako salad? Not so much. We are huge fans of tako salad, which if you aren't familiar, consists of raw octopus in a sesame dressing- sometimes with seaweed sometimes not. This tako salad came to us in the form of 2 sushi rolls- that's right 2 bites for 5 bucks. Regardless- we were delighted to place it in our mouths. Now, I despise, loathe, hate cilantro. As far as I am concerned it has no business being in any food item on my plate. I did see that they listed cilantro as an item in this salad, but we both assumed it would just be a light dusting and I could quickly swoosh it away to the side. Boy, were we wrong. The cilantro was diced so finely and had found it's nasty soap-tasting way into every crevice of this salad/roll. It was so bad, that was all I could taste. Take note Bluefin, when your octopus salad tastes more like cilantro than octopus, we have a problem. Ugh. Cilantro YOU are the devil. After this tako salad debacle, I was eagerly anticipating the arrival of our rolls. We ordered a spicy tuna, salmon & scallions, a hurricane and the "And the Oscar Goes To...". When they arrived, I will say that the presentation was quite lovely. They brought out the Hurricane roll about 10 minutes before anything else. Since it is a hot roll, we had to eat it rather than wait for everyone at the table to have their items delivered- that's a huge no-no in my book. The Hurricane consisted of crab, spicy crawfish and cream cheese and is a tempura fried roll. It was decent- no complaints. I thought I would be able to taste the crawfish, but it really didn't stand out at all. When the other rolls emerged, we found that the salmon & scallions tasted extremely fishy. Now, I love salmon, and I have never had salmon that tastes fishy- in fact I'll go on a limb and state that salmon happens to be one of the least fishy-tasting fish in the sea. This was very off putting. You never want your sushi to taste fishy. EVER. The tuna roll was standard- yet a bit too spicy for me. I will say this about Bluefin- if you go and are ordering sushi, you MUST order the And the Oscar Goes To... roll. It consists of spicy mayo, crab, avocado and shrimp topped with spicy crunchy tuna. It was amazing. I don't quite get the hype of Bluefin. I think it is decorated in some pretty tacky hues of blue and orange with some cheap Big Lots looking furniture, and aside from 1 roll, the sushi was pretty sub par. In fact, it almost seemed like an after thought. Perhaps it is cuz I'm from Chicago and they have some amazing sushi restaurants, but I do not find Bluefin to be upscale (aside from their prices- their servers were wearing jeans for pete's sake) nor do I find it to be good. I've had MUCH better sushi, and will not be back in the future. Our dinner for 2 set us back $74 bucks with tip- and that's just not okay for what we were served.
(2)Sue D.
We went to Bluefin this past Saturday night. Our party of 2 shared the sushi of the day which was a Shrimp Tempura. It was delicious. One of our party had the Wagyu Burger and one had the Pan Seared Scallops. Both meals were excellent! I highly recommend this restaurant and would go back.

THis place is So so.. From what I heard they failed their Health Inspection recently.. They could improve drastically if they did a little better with their menu and hiring better sushi / fusion chefs.

I've been to Bluefin about 7 times since it opened several years back and have had a friend as the general manager and 2 friends as managers. Pro: The decor is amazing. I can't think of the top of my head a cooler looking place in the city. The blue lights are done quite well and their room for large parties is very nice. If you want to go on a date and impress your mate this is the place to do it. With that said I'm a foodie, decor is nice but I'm all about the food and service hence the one star. Cons: Undoubtedly the worst made sushi in the city. The rolls fall apart, all of them, and are poorly made. Seriously, the gas station sushi at poplar and ridgeway blows Bluefin's sushi out of the water. Also their menu is pretty pathetic for a place that claims to to be Japanese-(forgot what else) fusion restaurant. Pretty much just sushi and pizza, thats right I said pizza! I've never had it but I have heard it is fantastic. Not exactly the place I would go for pizza, but it's Memphis. Also expect to pay $2-$3 more per order of sushi compared to any other Sekisui locations. All in all of you are downtown and want sushi there aren't any alternatives so you will go here. If you are taking a date out and want to impress to the max take them to this place. If you are serious about your food then this isn't the place for you. Really wish I could give this place at least 4 stars. I was nice with this review and never mentioned the horrendous service, I will be nice and leave that out.
(1)Beth S.
Love the atmosphere, the Redbirds roll and especially the Clover roll. Very cool downtown location.
(4)Graham K.
Terrible customer service. Expect to wait for everything. Sushi is ok, but there are plenty of other excellent places to dine in Downtown Memphis.
(1)Kim P.
oh my gosh this place has SoO much potential!! but drops the ball big time the decor and space, sadly, is the best part of the entire experience. FOOD: not wow. just okay. better than Kroger. worse than any of my sushi restaurant experiences. the rice was suuuuper sticky and the scallops were more bland and gooey than they were good. the miso was done well but that's all that was really good. if you look into the kitchen they had an african american man making all the sushi. which is fine, dont get me wrong. im just saying, usually the best sushi is made by an Asian chef who knows authentic Asian cuisine. im JUST saying. there are definitely exceptions... but this was not one of them SERVICE: worst. inattentive. incompetent. unfriendly. thats all i have to say. ATMOSPHERE: yeah, its cool. but that doesnt make up for everything else. LOCATION: its okay. its really near beale and parking is prolly 5 bucks at a deck near by. or street parking and walk through the trolly lane.
(2)Ashley L.
Bartender David is an amazing addition to a menu that is always changing and fresh!
(4)Aaron O.
This place is a solid medium for sushi given that fresh sushi is difficult to find in landlocked states. I had the mussels as an appetizer and I must say they were very good. The service wasn't outstanding, I was given a long dirty upon entering by one of the hosts and that was rather interesting, but the food is what matters and it is pretty good.
(3)Allyn B.
Mmmm the martinis here are sooo good! Sushi is decent and so is the pizza :-)
(4)Shannon R.
I wen here with coworker for lunch one day. We enjoyed their sushi happy hour, where someone comes around with a tray filled with $3, $5, and $7 plates of sushi. The sushi was very tasty. I stuck with basic things like chrunchy crab and california roll. My coworkers ventured out and got differente things, they enjoyed theirs as well. I also tried the edamame, it was ok, a little overcooked. The place has a great atmosphere, which I'm sure would be better at night. This is not a quick place, so go there expecting to get in and out real quick.
(4)Sam P.
While nothing blew my socks off, the sushi we ordered was well done. What did impress was the "carrot-ginger-something else" bisque. WOW! I recommend. We only ordered one cup between us because we were a little concerned with the sound of the dish. Just order it, don't think twice. The only negative I had was that it seemed that the waitress seating us was put off when I ask to sit someplace other than wedged between the staircase and the drink station. We moved anyway. Also, the atmosphere is a little techno-trendy for my taste, and just a bit loud. Thankfully, our waiter (Thomas) was great. Perfect balance between tell me everything, tell what I want to know, and tell me what I NEED to know. Thanks Thomas.

Definitely a hip, modern restaurant/lounge in the downtown Memphis area. I don't work downtown and only come down for special occasions- Orpheum performances, birthdays, group events. We often come here with groups for dinner or drinks and sushi. It's definitely not your "typical" Memphis sushi place. Actually there aren't many restaurants like it here. It's a fun place to go with groups because they have great areas for groups- private rooms, seating with couches. They do have a strict group policy- one check, a fee if fewer people show up, so be sure to check that out on line. The sushi is good and the pizza is also great if you don't like sushi. Go here for a fun, funky atmosphere- with a group- for late night sushi (it's open later than other sushi restaurants.) One bonus is you can walk to the Orpheum from the restaurant.
(4)N. P.
This may be in my top three in Memphis. Everything about this place appeals to me -- the healthy (mostly), filling food, the amazing atmosphere -- very modern, a very chill, modern club feel -- and the music. Always great music. Not normally a fan of spicy, but I love the spicy garlic shrimp (plump, juicy, fresh) and the miso soup (perfectly salty). Kirin Ichiban is on draft, as well as a great selection of other domestic and imported beers. Birthday, holidays...I need to find more reasons to go here.

Visited in June, 2009. Bluefin is a modern, slightly-upscale, sushi restaurant in the heart of Memphis. What, sushi in Memphis? Yes! Memphis is becoming a great urban gem and Bluefin is just an example of the excellent food that can be found right in the heart of the downtown area. Start off with one of the amazing appetizers and enjoy their notable selection of sake before moving to your main course. When you're done, take a stroll down South Main Street or jump on the trolley at the station just footsteps away.
(3)Burney W.
There are great lunch specials here. The decor is fresh. The food is excellent. Ask for Lee to serve you.
(4)David M.
One of the most 'L.A. going for Tokyo' places in the city. Is it a sushi bar, restaurant or dance club? A little of each. On weekends they have techno-dj dance music and pool tables in back. Gratefully they also have a patio area out front, if you need to hear your date (or yourself). Try texting your conversation, a friend of mine did and she was right at home. They have both a bar-bar area and a sushi bar. Past the sushi bar and the fung-shui water sculpture, you have cozy (big) booths and low lounging couches surrounding coffee table-like service. The sushi is GREAT!!! They also serve pizzas, from a 'fusion' menu of Asian & American cuisine. The drinks are strong and they have an extensive wine list. Most wines are available by the bottle or glass.

Bluefin has a cool, loungy atmosphere. There is a sitting area at the entrance with beds & couches. There's ample indoor seating, as well as, outdoor seating along Main St. I think it's perfect for cocktails and a snack before a night out or a nice dinner. It doesn't quite feel like Memphis, ya know? The sushi is good. Nothing spectacular. I think it's pricey for what you get. Although, they have a happy hour deal (offered at lunch - they may offer it at the traditional happy hour time, too). The chef makes several sushi rolls (whatever he feels like, I 'spose) and they're offered at 1/2 price. It's a great way to try something new without breaking the bank. Everyone is very nice, however, service is much to be desired. We were seated and had no napkins or chop sticks when our food came. Even after our server acknowledged that we needed those items, we had to ask someone else before they were actually delivered to our table. No soy sauce, ginger or wasabi were served with our sushi, which we thought was strange. Once the check was delivered, we didn't see our waitress again. We had to take it to the hostess stand and tell the girl that we were ready to pay. These things might be quasi understandable if they were super busy, however, they were not. We were one of *maybe* five tables in the entire restaurant.

For lack of a better option for sushi, Blue Fin became the go-to dining option of my team. Though never really disappointed, I have developed and confirmed the fact that the mid-west doesn't really understand the more-delicate Asian cuisine, and has instead settled for the more-is-better routine. Take it at face value, don't expect too much, and you won't be really disappointed.

I am probably a bit of a sushi snob, so you can imagine my delight when the supposedly "best sushi in town" popped up on the site. I know enough about sushi, after countless outings, classes, and traditional teachings, that I feel confident that my opinion is not unjust. The first thing I noticed upon entering the restraunt was that not a single staff member seemed willing to help us. Once I inconvenienced the hostess and got my wife and I seated, we were treated similarly by our waitress. She only seemed to truly appreciate us once she saw that our order would guarantee her a large gratuity. Uni was not on the menu, but that is something I have come to expect from all local sushi restaurants. So, I ordered two types of nigiri and three specialty rolls. We also had an appetizer of crab cakes, because my wife was madly craving them. Honestly, they were the best part of the meal. The nigiri, like all other local varieties, were lacking all of the traditional elements. If I had wanted to simply eat fish on top of a flavorless rice ball, I would order it from a Chinese buffet. That mentioned, the three rolls were of no better quality. I was even more upset when I ordered tomago and received something that tasted similar to fast food scrambled eggs with sugar. All in all, I was highly disappointed by the quality of the sushi, and staff of this restaurant and will not return or recommend it, to anyone I like.
(1)J B.
Cool trendy place with slightly above average sushi at slightly above average price. Nice slow pace rather than a rushed dinner. Definitely a place I would come back to.
(4)Bryan N.
I can't accept this as sushi. I don't consider myself a sushi snob because I don't eat it enough to judge "good" sushi. However, I do know bad sushi when I eat it. My grandmother makes hand made sushi at home, and my grandfather's friend is an itamae. I have had sushi from both of these people, and I can say it was very tasty. I have had sushi all over the western coast when I used to live there, and I can say that most of the time it was good. However, I have not had good sushi in Memphis once. That being said, Bluefin is not sushi, as it is in Japanese culture. It is a rolled meal consisting of rice and some other items. I have ordered multiple items at Bluefin and have always been disgusted at the fact they use cream cheese in almost every roll. This is unacceptable for sushi (and it just plain doesn't taste good to me) and can only be interpreted as a sign that they are incapable of making good sushi without the assistance of a flavor enhancer. Good sushi should come from the rice quality and preparation (both lacking), fish quality and preparation, and the details of handling and combining the elements. The only item I found was semi-acceptable was their eel, but even that was not prepared well (it was too sweet and overcooked) and was horrifyingly overpriced for the quality. If you are a transplant from southern California, such as myself, and are hoping for Bluefin to provide the quality you would expect judging from the price, you will be disappointed as I was. It just doesn't taste good. The interior of Bluefin is nicely decorated, and it is a fine place for a small get together for drinking. However, as with their food, the prices are high. I will never go to Bluefin of my own free will.

We meet the there all the time for girls night. We usually try to get our favorite waiter Tom, and always have a great time. He is laid back, efficient, not chatty, and honest with his opinion and recommendations. I love BlueFin sushi rolls, and am usually disappointed when I try sushi elsewhere in Memphis. The only place I'v ever had better sushi in the area is Seiko in Bartlett, but I won't drive that far. They also have a great apple desert with a pastry top and caramel.. but I can't remember what it is called..
(4)Katie P.
I am giving Blue Fin an extra star because I admittedly do not eat sushi. Obviously that makes me enjoy this experience less than most other restaurants. If I weren't extremely fair and just, it would be two stars. We went on a Thursday night around 8pm and it was very busy. I was with a group of about 10. Service was incredibly slow, but still friendly and not awful. I HATED the seating arrangements, I shared a couch with two other people and we were very close and it was just really uncomfortable. I mean, I get it. It's modern and hip and whatever. But seriously, can I just have a chair please? That said, the decor and atmosphere was really cool. I might have enjoyed it more if I was just out drinking or something and didn't necessarily expect the luxury of having my very own chair. I ordered pizza on account of hating sushi, and I gotta say, they make a mean pizza for a sushi place. It was the meat lovers, and it was really, really good. Would I go back just for the pizza? No, but if I am ever forced here by sushi lovers, I will know that something good will come out of the experience.
(3)Ken Z.
Pretty Unremarkable.

Unfortunately, I can't go below 1 star. Horrible service, mediocre food. Save yourself the experience and drive somewhere else.
(1)Jason S.
100% disappointed in Blue Fin. Dried food on my wine glass. Slow service. So-so sushi. I'll think three times before eating here again. Just pitiful.

The owners of this place just don't know how to run a restaurant. When my wife and I asked to be seated for lunch after looking at a menu, the hostess picked up two menus and just started walking away. Are we following her? Is she going to do something else? Turns out we were supposed to be following her--at least we guessed correctly there. Our waitress, fortunately, was friendly, but the detached hostess returned with a tray of the chef's selected sushi for $3, $5, and $7 for us to look at before we placed an order. The hostess proceeded to tell us the random nouns by which the various rolls were known, but didn't bother explaining any of them. After I asked for more specific descriptions of a couple of things, the waitress helpfully jumped in and told us which rolls were the most popular, and what was in them. So we picked a few plates, and then realized we had no wasabi. There's hand cut wasabi root ("not the fake stuff") on the menu for $3, so I figured we needed to actually order wasabi to get any. Our waitress was MIA, as would become usual, so I got up and walked halfway across the restaurant to ask for some. The brat pretending to be a hostess intercepted me, and wordlessly went to get some wasabi when I asked for some. She brought a little dish of "the fake stuff," along with some pickled ginger, and walked away immediately before I could ask for the real stuff. I have no special need to spend $3 on wasabi so I let it go, but at this point we started wondering how this girl still had a job. Anyway, the waitress only showed up again about 10 minutes after we'd finished the first few plates. We asked if she could bring the tray of specials around again, but sadly the hostess turned up with it, this time without our waitress/interpreter in sight. I ended up just grabbing something relatively cheap so she'd go away and we could finish and leave. The waitress did turn up after that to see what we'd chosen, but was again MIA when we wanted to pay. So, the service is terrible. Some people need to be let go, and others need to be retrained so they become more attentive. That said, the food was basically ok for the price, at least as far as the half-priced specials go. My wife and I ate for 20 bucks plus tax. But my wife just looked at this and says she isn't sure "ok for the price" is honest enough (which is especially interesting because she didn't pay for it). So let's amend that: the food would be ok if it were free.
(1)Gary J.
I've eaten here a few times for lunch when someone is craving sushi. The service isn't terrible, but it is really slow. If you are looking for something quick, this isn't the place. Lunch (for 2 or 3) generally takes an hour and a half at least. I typically get the beef teriyaki and a roll or two (just starting to eat sushi so I order the teriyaki as a safety net). The food is decent. If the location wasn't so convenient for my co-workers and I, we probably wouldn't eat here. Most of the other reviews are spot on when it comes to the decor and seating arrangements.
(2)John H.
The sushi is relatively tasty, but atmosphere? The majority of the time I felt like I'd walked into an abercrombie store. And I like electronic music, but typically in other places, like a club but it just didn't fit a restaurant. But if your up for the 25% surcharge to eat your sushi in a "trendy" spot, than here is your hang out my friend.
(3)Stephy W.
I had a $75 certificate from restaurant.com (which I got for about $15 or so, great sales there) for this place and wasn't sure what to expect. When my group and I arrived, we were somewhat floored by the atmosphere. It has a really trendy, clubby, big city look that I wouldn't expect for Memphis. Sadly the hostess and staff seemed very snooty and looked at our non-sexy, non-clubby clothing (slouchy jeans and t-shirts)and I swear I could see the disdain in their eyes. It was very busy and it appeared that it would be an hour long or so wait--- but they weren't sure. We were able to put our names down on a list and I asked if I could leave contact info, in case the wait got shorter and we figured we'd just roam Beale until then. THey said no,but luckily one person mentioned we could call them in about a 1/2 hour to see how things were going. After we left we called about 25 minutes later and they said if we came immediately they could hook us up with a table. After being seated we our waitress, who was extremely kind and helpful and knowledgeable about the menu promptly got us drinks and appetizers. The food is ok. There are hit and misses with the sushi I find and the place seems to be more look than quality. Sushi that was a hit, wasn't even that much a hit. Some rolls had lemon zest on/in them that were just much too overpowering and took away any other flavor that ought to be present. The rolls were also quite tiny I thought, so value-wise, you are forewarned. Presentation was always there, but this is that kind of place. It felt superficial all over. Things can sometimes be tasty though, I would suggest the calamari for example. But definitely not the tastiest sushi I've ever had and I haven't found anything to compare to Tony's sushi at his restaurant Kokoro in West Lafayette, IN at Purdue (it's amazing!) If you want a place to impress a date whose taste buds are either dead or not picky, come here. If you are a gourmand, you won't be impressed and will feel cheated. SUMMARY: overpriced, snooty hostesses, superficial, some good food, mostly overdone, nice presentation, not family friendly, good for a date who you want to impress by looks.
(3)Louise O.
Why?! Why do I bother with these pretentious-trendy sushi joints?! Why?! 'Cause I'm stupid and hopelessly optimistic that the fish will be good. AND after days of BBQ and steak, I was craving fish. Sat at the sushi bar that had 3 sushi "chefs" (none were Asian) that were not very skilled with the knife. I usually find it soothing to watch sushi chefs at work, but in this case I found it disturbing. The server was friendly enough, but busy so there were a few long gaps between finishing dinner and getting the check. Lesson learned. For real sushi enthusiasts, go somewhere else. If you want to be here for the "trendy" atmosphere, fine.
(2)Mike G.
not that great but not worst thing ever. Sushi is pretty boring and the service can be slow. Inside it looks like someone who went to a lot of raves in 1998 designed the place and it's pretty loud. Maybe I should give it 1 star but I don't think anyone spit in my food.

I am a Memphis local and a big supporter of business Downtown. Eating and drinking are a central part to my social life and being that I am young, trendy, and social Blue Fin is seemingly just a natural fit for my social scene. Unfortunately, repeated bad experiences are swiftly pushing Blue Fin out of the picture. I had a less than desirable experience in Blue Fin a few months ago and had not returned until last weekend when I was craving sushi and sake and decided to give it another try. I even talked some friends in to coming to meet my boyfriend and me there for drinks after dinner....MISTAKE. Our server was distant and not the least bit friendly. He seriously disappeared for 30 minutes at a time. Our food took nearly an hour and our friends ended up ordering one California roll that took 30 minutes or so to finally arrive. The whole experience ended up being a 3 hour disappointing ordeal. This weekend my boyfriend and I received a call from family traveling in from out of town. Guess where they wanted to go....Blue Fin. Being an optimist, I reassured my boyfriend that surely this experience would be better than the last. WRONG. Our party of 12 sat for nearly 20 minutes before anyone even took our drink order. Our server was less than enthusiastic but after some observation I had a little better understanding of her position. She was waiting on our party of twelve and at least 7 other tables that I could tell. She was completely stressed out and it was evident by her tone and demeanor with our group. In conclusion, I would say that Blue Fin has the potential to be a great hot spot in Downtown Memphis. They have a huge market to target in the local Downtown community but if they continue on the current path they are going to find themselves empty and wondering what in the world they did wrong. There are just too many other great places to eat and drink Downtown. There are no other sushi bars but after my experiences in the last two weeks, I will save sushi night for Thursday and just drive to Midtown Memphis.

Brought my girlfriend here for dinner one night, and didn't leave very impressed. I did my standard sushi/sashimi/gyoza stuff, and we orders the kushiyaki/konro, where they give you hot rocks with a small wire screen over it to cook your own stuff. So, the waiter messed up the sushi order (which he corrected), and the food straight away stuck to the wire. The place is trying for a very hip vibe, but I wasn't biting. While nothing food wise was 'bad', we won't be coming back. The Sekisui on the east side of Memphis is much better.
(2)Steven K.
Bad! Even a generous, apologetic manager who refunded us 20 percent for the discomforting experience couldn't salvage a horrendous wait-forever dinner. The beer was cold, though.
(1)Frank M.
Pretty Good. Loud. They have this grill thing which is their version of fondue. It's pretty fun. Not really the best date place because it's so loud. Half of the tables have couches instead of chairs... edgy I guess. You might be better off doing the outdoor seating. The Sushi was pretty good.... nothing too memorable though. Via con Dios.
(3)Christie W.
A friend took me here back in the Summer of 2007, for dinner while I was visiting her. I thought how good could sushi be in Memphis? However I was very pleasantly surprised. Everything we ordered was prepared beautifully. The presentation was exquisite. The drinks we intoxicating, both visually and well you know. The sushi was fresh, and delicious. I walked out of Blue Fin pleasantly full and satisfied.
(3)J Z.
kitschy, expensive. the food was decent... don't expect real japanese food.. everything is pretty much americanized. it was a fun place for my birthday! the prices aren't cheap. also, the waiters don't seem to know jackshiet about japanese food.
(3)Sonya S.
Blue lights. Dimmed lighting. Varied types of tables and seating areas. This is a neat place to chill out. The sushi is pretty good. The tropical cold sake is awesome! Cold sake and pineapple juice is so delicious and comes in a large bottle. Two thumbs up.
(4)Sarah M.
The decor is trendy and the place has aesthetic appeal, but the food just wasn't that good. Does have a good sake selection. I had sashimi and some of the pieces were chewy meaning that they were not cut well. The roll I ordered - spicy crawfish - was mostly rice. Good edamame, though. And the staff was nice.
(2)Angela W.
Not perfect, but good.: It's worth the trip, if but for the novelty only. Yes, the sushi was good, but not the best I have ever had. They need to consider more which type of plate/bowl/etc each dish is served in. The glassware was interesting, but not the easiest to drink from. Some real chopsticks would have been nice (instead of disposable wood). More than one pencil for a group of 4 would have been helpful. The salmon sashimi was excellent, though. The woman forcing a glob of soap into my hand in the restroom was NOT good, though. The waitress complaining to us that her tip wasn't big enough was quite rude; we should have changed it from 15% to zero.

Phenomenal for sushi or their other innovative creations. I'm a big fan of the pork shank, duck dishes, and the pizzas. The atmosphere is great for dates, meetings, or birthdays. The sake and pineapple juice = heavenly. I'll agree that this is a pretty trendy spot- which means I rarely go because I prefer cheaper, whole-in-the-wall joints.

I came here on a Wednesday night, and it was an ok experience. I waited about 40 minutes for my food. The waiter told me the sushi bar was backed up. Sigh. That does not get the experience off to a good start. The ambience was pretty cool and modern. The food was ok, if somewhat overpriced. I got the Spicy Tuna tower. Eh. It was ok, nothing exciting for the 10 bucks they charged. I got a simple salmon scallion roll. Don't waste your time or money, it was just blah. The nigiri was good though. It was very fresh and rich, so I would recommend that. Overall, ok.

The first time I ate at Bluefin, it was 2009 and it seemed like the landing for the local "It" set. It was dinnertime and we sat at those deep velvety couches that reminded me of eating in bed. It truly lived up to the "sushi lounge" vibe. Eating sushi in bed is kind of weird, though, isn't it? No matter. I've since returned and was able to get an actual table both times. I appreciate going at lunchtime or early dinner when it's not so desperately hip (though to be fair, I don't know if that's what's happening here when it's during the busy hours). The edamame hummus is so good! I love that they drizzle hot sesame oil on top, because it truly does take it to the next level. I am glad they serve it now with warm flatbread (really good!) rather than the crispy wontons they used to serve it with (those things have more oil than potato chips. I recall thinking it was just too much). I also ordered a veggie sushi roll, which is described quite differently on the menu. The veggie roll I received did not have tofu as indicated. It was still good (I like the lettuce in there), but not terribly exciting as it contains carrot, lettuce and avocado... possibly cucumber. I'm kind of a fanatic for inside out rolls with sesame seeds on the outside and I was disappointed that there was not a seed to be found. Same for the avocado cucumber roll that I also ordered (which did not come inside out. Didn't realize I had to specify). It all tasted fine, but pretty plain and boring. I'm glad I have a dependable place to get food/drink within walking distance of my hotel, but otherwise, I most likely wouldn't consider this a destination spot. I really dig their prices and I recall a happy hour that impressed last time at the separate bar!

Frozen fish. The sushi isn't worth the price. If you price yourself up you have to deliver a better product: food, service, and atmosphere. Blue Fin doesn't deliver any, and actually manages to under perform in several areas. The food was a step up from Captain D's, only with the added joy of having the BLUE hair from our server in our food. Found three strands of blue hair! Outside of that, the sauces lack punch, and are just generic and sweet like ketchup. No layers of flavor. You expect more for this price. The cooking was uneven, as some dishes at our table were overcooked, some under, some just right. When the food doesn't deliver you start looking closer at other components. The service was substandard. The blue haired waitress was rude, short with us, and had to be prompted every time for refills. This despite the restaurant not being busy. The decor and atmosphere of Blue Fin is tacky and stereotypical. Nothing special, nothing offensive. The hostess was very friendly. A flower rising up from the wasteland Avoid this restaurant. If you want seafood, there are cheaper options that aren't masquerading as something it's not. The fish is not only frozen, it's difficult to believe these fish were ever alive. Bluefin just made us blue

I have been pleasantly surprised by my last two visits here! As a native Memphian,I grew up in East Memphis and I am loyal to Sekisui, but when I'm downtown and want sushi, Bluefin is the way to go! I'm picky with sushi but they have a lot of options I really do enjoy. My mom and sister are sushi connoisseurs and have never had a bad roll here! Also, I judge a sushi restaurant on the quality of their house salad, and more importantly, their ginger dressing. Bravo, Bluefin, your house salad is on target! The staff is very friendly as well!

I love edamame!!! and they have it with lime and sea salt and the miso soup is so yummy!! But I must admit I will miss the crab cakes they've been removed of the menu--- staff is awesome here

My first time here. Loved it! Started with Forbidden Fruit which was fantastic (had a few more) and the Edamame. We ordered several rolls (Surf&Turf-Redbirds-Bluefin-Spicy Tuna) and had a variety of sashimi. Everything was great. I was especially fond of the Surf&Turf roll - the asparagus made for a bit of crunch which I love. Xanthe was a brilliant beacon. Very friendly knowledgable and tuned in to our needs as dinner progressed. Do yourself a favor ask for Xanthe's table. And to make it complete the restroom facilities were clean and had a good smell! X2

Nice atmosphere but the sushi was average. I can't speak to the rest of the menu but for a sushi place in Memphis....I wouldn't consider bad at all.
(3)Cathy V.
Stopped to have lunch after an apt. Sat outside on the patio which was nice. The service was good. We ordered sliders, flat bread and 2 sushi rolls. The burgers were over cooked but everything tasted good.
(3)Corey E.
Bluefin is considered one of Memphis's upscale sushi restaurants located in the downtown area. I love the decor and location of this restaurant as it is situated in the heart of downtown on Main street. There is always a nice crowd here and the bar area is very nice (but small). They have a wide variety of sushi rolls but are a little bit on the pricey side. All in all, I would recommend their MPD and spicy tuna rolls along with their drinks.
(4)Casey G.
Food (sushi) was average. Decor is fine Service was lousy. Young woman waiting on us could not really be bothered to be polite to us. The kicker is, I'm the kind of guy who doesn't like to have meaningless small talk with a server. I ask that you greet me and check on me in a timely manner and know what's on the menu. This woman could have served our table at least three more rounds of drinks and maybe a desert or two... But wait, she's no where to be found. Second day in a row of slow, unattentive service in Memphis. Is it a southern thang?

i hate do this to a restaurant that i have frequented at least weekly for 3 years, but it is my duty as a yelper. i want to make it clear i am reviewing the alcohol bar (as opposed to sushi bar) dining area. the food here is only decent sushi. the bar area is lively; with a big HOWEVER, the attitude of one of the main bartenders has become so unacceptable that i will not be returning for a long time. and this my friends, from a regular, weekly customer.:( i shudder to think of how a newbie would be treated. nope. memphis has other sushi options that in fact deliver better sushi, and there are plenty more choices downtown where one can sit at a bar and dine and read and feel welcome and appreciated. i do not think i have ever 1 star reviewed a restaurant in all my travels. that speaks volumes. bye bye bluefin.....
(1)Ben H.
I've only been for lunch but I've been several times now and enjoyed each visit. There's a wide variety of sushi which is always fresh and reasonably priced (at least at lunch). The service has been mostly good, about what I expect during a busy lunch hour. Some day I hope to try dinner to get a more rounded view of the restaurant.
(4)John W.
Went there for business lunch, seated quickly (it was not crowded at all). Nice bright dining area, server was polite and attentive. Sushi was OK - had a couple nigiri. Meh. The roll I had was good - never had crawfish in a crunch roll before and it was pretty good. Probably a 3.5 on the star scale. I would recommend, but not for a hardcore sushi nut.
(3)Psonya H.
I love Bluefin. Best sushi in Memphis, hands down. And the sushi tray at lunch? Marvelous! I didn't even like sushi until a friend of mine almost forced a Hurricane roll down my throat, and since then? I've been a Bluefin fan. Note that their other dishes are also divine. If you like scallops, try the dish with the scallops and the corn. You'll love yourself for taking that chance. However, let me tell you this. Bluefin does not care about your parking meter situation when it comes to that sushi tray. It's first come, first served, which is fair enough. But, if you get there at...say....11:30, you're gonna wait until noon before they bring that bad boy out. They are going to make the sushi right before your eyes and sit all the rolls up there so perfectly delicious, but they are not going to move with that tray until the clock strikes noon. It's totally like a Cinderella situation. So, don't think that you're going for an early lunch of Happy Hour Sushi, because you.are.not. You just aren't. Sorry. Go at 12.
(5)Tina K.
Love the atmosphere here! Service is always good and I love the sushi! Patio is awesome!
(5)Nurse K.
I havn been twice and both times left disappointed. Maybe the rave reviews are for the sushi selection only because the other entrees are pricey and tasteless. Even the miso soup is awful. I prefer Osaka. The atmosphere is nice and so is the location. Good place for drinks but not food.
(2)Melissa W.
Service was great and food was good too but they're basic foods and tastes. Price is higher, in my opinion, because of the place itself and not because of the actual foods
(4)Richard A.
Fish tastes old. Servers at late night aren't friendly nor helpful... Terrible service. If the restaurant is going to stay open, please keep the same service. Simple things such as refilling water. We asked the manager/hostess if the kitchen was still open, she said "yes it is"... then we don't need our female server telling us every 5 minutes that the kitchen is going to close. Give it up for the young Asian male server with the glasses on, he was still courteous with running the food. Hope the automatic 18% gratuity went to him at least.
(2)Pete K.
Miso soup, vegan noodle bowl and a "super vegan" roll made this vegan happy. Good service from Mondo and a definite recommend for Blue Fin.

So I went to Tennessee for vacation with my fiance. I live up north so my sushi standards are high. I knew going down south I wouldn't find good sushi. I went to Sakura which was not that good. My Philadelphia Roll and Crunchy Crab roll at Sakura wasn't that great, tasted mediocre, they didn't taste that fresh. My last day in Tennessee my now fiance took me to Bluefin, from what my best friend told me about the place it was a really good sushi place. She is from up North as well and moved to Tennessee. I ordered The Oscar Goes To Roll... and the Weekend At Ernie's Roll, they tasted so good. They tasted like the rolls I get from my favorite sushi place in Connecticut called Yokohama; it tasted so fresh, so good. We also received a free bottle of Champagne because my fiance proposed to me here. It was quite a memorable night, he ordered two or three rolls and we got a free peach cobbler as well to celebrate our engagement, it was so good, it had so much flavor. I would love for these guys to come up North because it was just a all around amazing place. The decor was beautiful, low light, romantic, so clean inside, the bathrooms were so clean as well, also the music wasn't loud as well. I definitely recommend this place.
(5)Tracy W.
NASTY! Seated fast and order taken fast! We ordered 1 hurricane and 1 tornado roll! The man that brought out the food nails were nasty and looked as if he had just changed the oil on his car. We asked which rolls were which and he stated he didn't know with a attitude and place the food on the table then left. So we left too! The rolls looked liked old frozen chicken nuggets. Another couple sitting adjacent of us sent their food back because it was raw chicken in it. Don't eat here! We were very disappointed!

Very good sushi , fresh ingredients combined with amazing fish rolls and a great atmosphere. Huge menus to choose from , not just sushi. Try it , I liked it.
(5)Matt H.
The sushi was average at best. The hostess was almost dismissive. It was as if our party was an irritant or inconvenience. I do not anticipate another visit to this establishment.
(2)Brittney H.
We used to LOVE this place. After the last several years, this restaurant has gone down. Service was mediocre, food was awful, and bill was extremely expensive for what we got. Our last visit, we both got food poisoning from the sushi. Yikes!
(1)Chris J.
My family and I had a chance to visit this restaurant after seeing The Lion King at the Orpheum in downtown Memphis. The restaurant was classy and jazzy with a very nice view of Main Street. The sushi was some of the best that I have ever had and I can honestly say that it was filling. We look forward to going back for another visit!
(5)Rachel B.
Very tasty sushi! You gota try the seared Kobe if you want to splurge. The ginger salad dressing was good however I like a creamy dressing & it is a vinegar based. My husband I'd allergic to avocado & they willing substituted it on the rolls with out a problem. The waiter was nice & enjoyable. He did seem to be gone a little longer for as few customers as were there but still attentive. All in all we were pleased & would return if we are back in the city. (We didn't order off the regular menu, just the sushi menu. And it was a late lunch/early dinner.)

Oh, Bluefin. We used to love one another. I'm not sure what has changed about this restaurant, but it has lost its luster. When it first opened it was the location for our girls night every Thursday. The restaurant was packed and they had the best happy hour in town. Who can resist $5 rolls? I even had a well-used frequent member card. But then they expanded and seemed to get an attitude. That is about the time I noticed they weren't as busy. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely adore their bar on the side. It is like its own restaurant. Perhaps it is because their bartenders are amazing and know my name and drink, but this is what I consider to be their saving grace. I'd never eat in the main restaurant. Which is sad, because I actually do like their sushi. If you do come here, eat at the bar. The bartenders are friendly and the sushi is good. I don't know what it is about the main restaurant that is so off-putting...besides the unattentive waiters.
(3)Paulette B.
This was my first time to bluefin, and I was not impressed. The menu was a 4 x 11 leaflet that was not explained how to use by the server ans was confusing. So we ordered a plate of raw meat from the description..ugh! So after returning the order and selecting a couple of rolls the portions were very small and the rice was stale. I won't be back. Didn't too much like the beds in the entrance as well.
(2)Dominique G.
My family and I have been many times and it's always been a great experience. The sushi is great and so are the chef specials. Last time I went, my boyfriend and I split the Bluefin Platter and they let us substitute the spicy shrimp for a spicy tuna. I love tuna and I am glad they let me change the rolls. For an appetizer, we got the Ceviche which was delicious. The wonton chips really complimented the Ceviche well by giving it a crunch. It was a large portion for 2 but I wanted more. As for the platter, it was amazing. It really hit the spot. For a late dinner, I always tell my boyfriend I want something light to eat and I could never figure out what that meant until we had dinner there. Everything hit the spot and I had the filling but light dinner I had always wanted.

I feel like I have to give Bluefin 5 stars just to set the record straight.. I used to come here frequently when I lived in Memphis, and I never had a bad experience. They offer a full bar with a wide variety of sake, which is crucial for me to have with sushi. The inside is modern and appealing, and I've had some hilarious servers in the numerous times I've been. They update the menu frequently (try the edamame hummus!) and they're very flexible if you want things added to/ omitted from your rolls. I can't write a review without mentioning that they have a good veggie selection too. They even have these flatbread dishes, in case anyone in your party is shy about ordering sushi for whatever reason. OH! And the outside seating is awesome when the weather is nice. Also, they will validate your parking ticket if you park in the Peabody Garage.

Ok, after at least 5 years of this being my go-to place when I want to eat before a concert, I am breaking up with Bluefin. Was never the best sushi but it was pretty good and the location was super convenient. I noticed it wasn't great in October but figured it was a bad night. Last night was unacceptable in every way. 6 o'clock reservation before an 8 pm show one block away. Took over an hour to get our order (which was all raw fish, mostly sashimi). Poorly cut and dry. The "tuna tower" was a dinner plate mostly covered with wonton chips, a small ring mold of rice topped with a couple of pieces of tuna and 3 slivers of avocado. Small, poorly prepared portions. Tried to immediately just order more fish so we'd have enough to eat. Couldn't get the waiter, the hostess was disinterested in helping me find a manager, were finally told they couldn't get any more food on the table within 30 minutes. And we were just asking for anything...nigiri, sashimi, anything you can get on the table so we wouldn't go to the show starving. Manager tried to be accommodating, explained how busy they were, offered to comp the meal which I told the waiter (who I fully intended to tip regardless) who disappeared forever again and then presented me with a bill for everything except the pitiful tuna tower. Meanwhile we'd been trying to make a meal of wonton chips but our water glasses had gone unrefilled for 90 minutes so we were choking on salty dust. I heard other people talking to the staff about "we just don't have another hour to wait" so it wasn't just me. I paid the bill and spent the show nauseous and hungry from the two cocktails I had at Bluefin that turned out to unexpectedly settle on an empty stomach. This was a Wednesday night, nothing happening at the forum, a show at the Orpheum going on. The place was mostly empty when we sat down and filled up during the 60 + minutes we were waiting for food. As a downtown eatery, if you can't get passable food on the table in 2 hours because there is a show at the Orpheum, it's time to pack it in and let somebody else have a try. They're just wasting a good location at this point. If it had actually been free due to the abysmal experience, I might have given them the benefit of the doubt one more time. But they took my money, gave me nothing but aggravation in return and ruined my evening. Crummy attitudes from everyone except the manager (and what he offered didn't happen). We're done.
(2)Linda L.
We have always loved Bluefin but the last few visits have been disappointing. Last night was a disaster...bad waiter and even worse food. Except for the snapper special, the food was inedible. No seared tuna entree? What's up with that... I will not return.
(1)Christopher M.
The ambiance and decor is appealing to the eyes. The seafood ceviche was flavorless... I had to ask for lemon to give it some flavor and even add soy sauce which I've NEVER done to ceviche before. The plate also came with a mountain of fried wontons - too much. I also ordered a house salad with seared tuna that was just okay. I would have given this place two stars but the staff was friendly and the pricing was reasonable. Wouldn't go back though.
(3)And W.
Volcano roll was fantastic. Good sushi in downtown Memphis right in the middle of the action.
(4)Muhammad M.
Service sucks.. I don't know Why I pick this place.. Table was sticky and once again service sucked
(2)Karen L.
Sigh...I haven't been here in a while, and a recent late-night dinner was...disappointing. I don't know if it's just whoever was working the sushi bar or just a new way of doing things, but the sashimi plate was not the same at all. The pieces of fish were thin and small, not the gorgeous ones I remember -- and for $23, I expect a lot. My dragon roll was excellent though, and while our server accidentally entered a regular tuna hand roll instead of the spicy that the boyfriend asked for, she did fix it and take it off the check (after we reminded her). And the new crop of hostesses is much better at actually doing their jobs, which is nice. Btw, Bluefin, please turn down the air conditioning so I can eat without shivering, and do something about the mess in the ladies room. I know the air dryers are environmentally friendly and all, but when you only have one, and it shuts off every 8 seconds, it's a huge pain. Add the general mess on the floor, and I just waited til I got home. So, I am not really in hurry to go back to Bluefin. If I want to spend $80 plus tip on dinner, I can do it somewhere else.
(3)Tom S.
Plenty of seating and an outdoor area too. I had the fresh catch, it was one of the best meals I've ever had. The crab and pistachio ravioli was very rich and went perfect with the sauce and bacon greens.
(5)Mary Kate M.
Bluefin used to be the place to see and been seen. I don't think that is particularly the case anymore. It is overpriced sushi with not a vast selection much different from Sekisui, however, they have AMAZING DRINKS hence why I am giving Bluefin 3 stars. Drinks are made with good quality stuff and they go with a hefty price, I think the price carries its weight. I can't stress enough on how good their signatures are. Try the Bombay Express or the Forbidden Fruit. OMG awesome deliciousness. Ambiance is great and lots of blue lights around. You'll enjoy the dim lighting for sure.
(3)Hillary G.
Went here one evening after a cocktail party. I had a tequila sunrise, spicy salmon & spicy tuna rolls, and bread pudding. 1) The tequila sunrise was very good. They were not stingy with the tequila at all. Good, balanced drink. 2) The spicy salmon & spicy tuna rolls were both very much as advertised. If you're used to sushi bars that pay lip service to the term "spicy", these will be a shock. They were EXTREMELY spicy, so just be warned. I can't be sure they didn't crank up the heat to cover up the fact that the fish wasn't the best quality. 3) Finally, the bread pudding was very "meh". I will not be getting it again. It was quite bland; not enough cinnamon, nutmeg, or really ANYTHING. Bread pudding should present the taste of the spices front & center, not as a hint. 4) The service was EXTREMELY slow, and it can't be blamed on the crowd, because it wasn't crowded at all. Overall: it wasn't bad, but it wasn't good either. There are certainly better sushi places in Memphis (I used to go to Sekisui Cordova a lot, but haven't been there in 3 or 4 years so I can't say), and we probably will be going to one of those for our sushi fix.
(3)Lisa R.
I love going to Bluefin because it's a cool place downtown with a fun atmosphere - and the sushi is good. However, the prices are just a little too high for the portion sizes (the sushi rolls aren't very big). My favorite time to eat here is at lunch during the week when they have half priced rolls, but then I miss out on the night-life atmosphere you get there at night. Overall it's a fun place to go when you're downtown at night and in the mood for sushi, but it costs a pretty penny.
(3)Gary P.
I walked in here by accident but decided some sushi would be great for lunch. They offer a variety of sushi rolls on there sushi bar offering. They bring the selections to you and you select what you want. All I tried were very good. I'll be back
(4)Nicole C.
Can someone please explain why the South is making sushi?? This place was gross. I ordered the spicy garlic shrimp which had no flavor on the shrimp. Only the rice had seasoning in my bowl. The crab rolls had imitation crab. Come on, we can see the compacted little strips of fake crab. Idk why I thought it was a good idea to have sushi in the south. Memphis needs to stick to what they know.

How have I not written a review about Bluefin yet? it's definitely one of my all-time favorite memphis restaurants. It's a go-to spot that I like to take friends from out of town. I've pretty much sat in every lounge area in bluefin at this point. If you go with a big group, definitely ask ahead of time to get one of lounge areas or the rooms if you want to be more private. I love the blue lighting and swanky decor--it definitely makes you feel like you're going somewhere special. The service is always good. The sushi is even better. I've honestly had a lot of items off the menu and liked pretty much everything I've eaten. You can also ask for freshly grated wasabi if you don't mind paying a little extra--and yes it makes a difference than the green goop you get in most sushi restaurants for free. Only one downside is that the sushi's on the pricey end--you can get as good quality at Sakura in Germantown. But Bluefin beats out any other sushi place in memphis on sheer innovativeness and atmosphere. If you're downtown and want to do something extra special, go to Bluefin--you won't be disappointed.
