Expensive and honestly, extremely bland. I have no idea how this resturatnt could get everything right - location, atmosphere, menus and menu extensiveness but it was just missing that WOW flavor that all of us go to get at a thai restaurant. I got Tom Yum Soup (not spicy or sour enough and only 3 shrimp), panang curry (very watery with thin, hard, bitter chicken) with no zing and pad thai with almost no chicken. I was so disappointed. They even forgot to include hot sauce like most thai restaurant do. Maybe the area doesn't know what Thai is and they get away with a good review but not from me! I won't be returning! All of that cost $36 btw.

This is a relaxing and trendy restaurant. The service was really good. The food is great. If you like spicy food this is your place. I don't eat a lot of spicy food myself. They have items on the menu that are not spicy. I would recommend this place to anyone.

I've been going here for years, as the patio is excellent, and the service is usually decent. This evening I noticed that the prices have gone up, so it'll now put you back 15.95 for the red curry (with tofu, which is super cheap). There are other Thai options in town that are better value. They're making you pay for the venue here. I asked for my dish spicy, and it wasn't spicy. Even though they have symbols on the menu to indicate spicy dishes, it doesn't seem to translate to reality, as I've encountered the lack of spice issue before. The loud live music on the patio is not appropriate for the setting, or the price point of the food. The music is fine and all, but the type of performers they chose would be more appropriate for a bar.

Tonight was a great reminder that waiters can make or break a meal. Unfortunately, tonight that meant my meal was less than stellar because we got a bit of a sour puss...but I love Bhan Thai, so 4 stars it is. The restaurant is trendy, relaxing, and comfortable all wrapped into one. I have actually never had a bad waiter here so I was surprised tonight. Maybe he was just having an off night, but his less than enthusiastic attitude really put a damper on the evening. Then again, maybe I'm just spoiled because I've had rockin' waiters for the past couple of months. I recommend getting the appetizer sampler because everything on it was divine. And I can't get enough of the drunken seafood. Yummmmmm. Also noteworthy is the seafood soup. My mom devoured it in no time. The patio is simply gorgeous during the summer and I love the lights year round. Do yourself a favor, and check this place out!
(4)Meg D.
Amazing food! Service was great. Definitely recommend the Iiiiiii know Cosmo and drunken seafood combo

Easily the biggest food disappointment I have had in Memphis, because I was so excited to eat here. Pad Thai, $16 as carry out, was so so bland and bare. It was essentially just noodles. No spice, scant amount of peanut, a couple thin slices of chicken. The worst part really was the lack of spice though. Cute interior with a fun looking patio and the staff was super sweet, but there's no way I could ever recommend a Thai place that can't do pad Thai.
(2)Gracie C.
I generally judge Thai restaurants by their pad thai - it's really just 'okay' at this place. The curries are pretty good. But what keeps me coming back: the Chang Mai noodles. OH MY GOODNESS. So delicious. And love the outdoor seating at this place, I wish I could take this patio home.
(5)Kiki A.
Not the best Thai I've had. I had the lemon grass soup with shrimp. It came out a clear broth I mistook for the clear broth with mushrooms that are sometimes served at Japanese restaurants. Lacked that spicy savory sweet punch from Tom yum(?) soup I've had other places. The entree I had was the spicy old man. It was good except could have been spicier and less rich with sauce. Atmosphere is nice but the food is just ok....we took a cab to get here from the hotel downtown. Worth meeting the awesome cab driver, Earnest, who advised us to be more cautious waking around Memphis...not Worth $38 for clear broth and stir fried and stewed veggies. Waiter and staff very nice.
(2)Amanda G.
They have awesome curry dishes! I like this restaurant---fine dining. I want to check out the patio some time soon.
(5)Allie Y.
I'm so glad we found this place, I only wish we had discovered it sooner!! We sat out on the patio and loved the atmosphere with the lights. The food was soo good, too. Can't wait to go back!
(5)Christine M.
The ambience of Bhan Thai is great! Our waiters name was Zeuss and thanks to him, our dinner was phenomenal! My boyfriend had the Duck Curry, which was really good. I had the Eight Angels: it had Shrimp, Chicken, Beef, Pork, Shiitake mushrooms, baby corn, carrots, asparagus and brown sauce. I loved my meal! To drink, I had the Bhan Tini. My boyfriend had the Thai One On to drink, I preferred his drink over mine. It had puréed mango and lemon, I think. I really enjoyed our meal, if you come to Bhan Thai, ask for Zeuss!
(5)Shane S.
It was surprisingly bland. I've eaten here multiple times and have been underwhelmed each visit. It was better the next day as leftovers. This place makes me miss Sawaddi. I'd much rather go to Jasmine Thai or drive to Thai basil in bartlett.
(3)Eugene C.
Great food but terrible service. It was really unfortunate since we had heard great things. We aren't sure what happened as we were only told there were large groups but we watched people sit down and eat and leave in the course of our two and half hour dinner. Put a damper on the whole evening but at least our server was kind enough to continue to check on us. By no means did we feel appreciated when we were told they had to take care of the large group instead of us. Disappointing.
(1)Alan L.
Came here for lunch. Staff was friendly. My waiter was knowledgable about the menu and made recommendations based on my requests. I had the Thai spring roll for an appetizer. It was really enough for two or three people and was tasty for sure... Fresh and crisp on the inside... Well done! I selected the "Crazy Bowl" with Beef. When presented to the table... I have to admit I was pretty underwhelmed... I took a bite and my concerns were being validated..... Then after 1/4 way through the bowl, I finally mixed everything up... And all of a sudden, just like in chemistry class... That bowl just exploded in flavor and texture. I was taken back by the crunchy nuts, smooth noodles, and the over all experience! Great job!!

This was my first time to ever try Thai food... I LOVED the food. I got to try multiple things since I was accompanied by a large group. I ordered the Pad Thai with chicken and it was delicious! I also tried Green Curry, Tiger Eye (by far the best), and Sweet and Sour Chicken. Everything was wonderful and the patio was beyond amazing! The drinks were also great... So where did it go wrong? The service was the worst I think I have ever had. We had a reservation for 7:30 and we sat at the bar waiting for our table until about 8:10. (The bartenders were great). So then we were FINALLY seated and wanted a bottle of wine. It took 30 minutes for her to take our drink order and even longer for us to ever receive it. Then we ordered our food and it took an hour to come. By this time it was past 10 and we were all starving!!! Finally the food came and it was great. I was just so disappointed in the wait and the service. Bhan Thai does have one of the best patios in Memphis! If it wasn't for the patio I probably would never give them another chance... Hopefully next time I will have a better experience!

Bhan Thai is a good Thai restaurant in midtown Memphis. They have one of the best patios. The meals range between about $15 to $25. They have a full bar with some specialty cocktails. I had a Cigar Box Malbec. It was a nice red wine. Garrett had the Yum Tuna. It is a seared tuna that is spicy. It had a type of citrus salsa on top. I tasted it and liked it. Garrett loved it and has ordered it before. Both entrees came with steamed white rice. I had another one of the house specialties of garlic pork chops. They were cooked perfectly and served with grilled vegetables. The homemade sauce that accompanied my meal was my favorite. I would have liked to have had more of it. The only problem was that the food could have been hotter. It wasn't cold but it wasn't very heat hot. However, I like Bhan Thai and have been multiple times. I will definitely go back.
(3)Jessie R.
Really good thai food and friendly staff. I ordered take out here while in town and my red curry was really good, flavorful but not cry-your-eyes-out-spicy with well-cooked shrimp, and awesome spring rolls. Well priced wine list. The space is warm and cute too - maybe I just thought it was warm and cute in comparison to the rest of Memphis (oh no she didn't! yes, I did.) but who knows. I was inside for max ten minutes and managed to have two nice conversations with staff - I love friendly staff! After I finished my food I had that awesome post-Thai-food-high and I rode that high by watching Sister Wives on TLC all night.
(4)Lana M.
The Salmon Panang is delicious. Dine alfresco and have a relaxing experience while listening to great live music.

Went here for a nice, quiet, semi-romantic dinner this evening with my husband. In my hell fire fury to get this child out, I am trying every last trick I can Google up to jump start labor. Spicy food was next on the list, so hot wings for lunch and curry for dinner it was! I have to say, the only other time I have been here was on a week night, and this restaurant is like Jekyll and Hyde from week night to week end. We were smart enough to make a reservation, but still waited a good 10 minutes in a jam packed, hot lobby the size of a walk in closet. I was shocked at how loud it was inside. My husband and I were borderline yelling at each other across the table. A bit disappointing given how infrequently we get the opportunity to go out together recently. Regardless, we tried to make the best of the situation. We again ordered the appetizer sampler- which is still fabulous. He went for the green curry again for his entree while I opted for the Masaman curry. Oh my fiery, curry heavens was this dish delicious! I ordered it hot instead of just spicy (we're trying to get a small human out of my loins here people- ya gotta do it right) and wowe-wow-wow was this hot! I should specify I don't normally order spicy dishes. The sauce had a sweetness to it that made it bearable, coupled with the cashews, potatoes and beef it was seriously fantastic. This is my new favorite from Bhan Thai, and I don't know that I'll be able to stray from it in the future. Speaking of future visits, we both agreed that we will probably not return here on a weekend unless it is with a large group. I think the atmosphere tonight would have been great with a bunch of friends- but a date not so much. I can't fault them for this, and I won't take any stars away. It just means they're doing something right.
(5)Elle S.
I love this place, it has a nice patio, and the food is yummy, I always get one of the curry dishes or this big pasta bowl with cucumbers in it. yummers, the appetizers are soso.
(5)Stephen M.
A pleasant surprise last Sunday night. We were from out of town and scared there were no decent places in the city to eat. But we were able to split an order of egg rolls, golden shrimp, and red curry beef with a glass of wine. All quite tasty in a quiet corner of the restaurant and reasonably priced. Only negatives were they were out of spring rolls and the service was a little sluggish.
(4)Henry L.
I was pretty excited to try Bhan Thai. Unfortunately, the food was unimpressive. We started off with Appetizer Sampler. The AS included crab rangoon, egg rolls, pot stickers, and Thai Toast with cucumber salad. Everything on the sampler you can find at most Asian restaurant except Thai Toast. The cucumber salad was a little overly sweet for me. We also order Tom Yum Soup which was pretty bland for Thai soup. It needs more lime and lemon grass for soup base. For dinner, we shared a Drunken Seafood Combination. The shrimp was cooked perfectly. Squid was under cooked to the point of unedible. My girlfriend thought the mussels had too much grit. I think the mussels were pre-frozen kind but still should be cleaned. Salmon was cooked well. Sauce wasn't spicy for a hot dish and pretty generic sauce. I'm not a fan of generic sauce restaurant use for all dishes. Overall, I was hoping for good Thai food but was pretty disappointed. :(.

Bhan Thai is my favorite Thai restaurant. I just love it. I've spent many a night here with big groups of friends, and I love to bring out of town guests here. The patio is huge, and usually has some great live music playing, so we always try to grab a table outside when the weather is nice. The Tiger Cry appetizer is out of this world- beef charbroiled and served with hot sauce. I also love the Bhan Thai toast, which is topped with shrimp and chicken, and served with a cucumber sauce. Try the Tum Kha (coconut soup) with your entree. I usually order the pad thai with beef, prepared medium spicy. I've had it super spicy before and managed to eat the entire plateful but definitely had a few tears running down my face before I was finished. The place stays busy, but the atmosphere is always chill and relaxed. A favorite of mine, Bhan Thai is nothing short of fantastic.
(4)Jolynna M.
I am sad to see some of the negative reviews here about Bhan Thai. I have been many, many times and have never had a bad experience. The owner, Molly Smith, is most always there and extremely hospitable. I am always greeted with a warm welcome and big smile from her and all of the employees there. Located in a nice area of midtown, amidst old homes and huge oak trees, the setting couldn't be more lovely. The outdoor patio is a big multi-leveled deck with a full bar, tables with umbrellas and surrounded by shade trees. When the weather is nice, I always prefer sitting outside. On weekend nights, and sometimes other nights during the week, they have live entertainment. The last time I went, two guys played the guitar and crooned out some great oldies from James Taylor and Bob Dylan. Very enjoyable. In my opinion, this is one of the top Thai restaurants in town. Yes, it's a little "Americanized", but it's also delicious. I especially like their curries. The green curry is my favorite. But if you go, be sure to try the crab wontons as an appetizer. I could eat platefuls of them!
(4)Robert C.
Bhan Thai is a charming place located within a residential neighborhood in downtown Memphis. I met an old friend one night for drinks and dinner on the back porch - a perfect way to spend a summer evening. If you're a fan of panang curry like I am, then Bhan Thai is the place to go. You really could taste the citrus flavor behind all the complex tastes. Go for the panang curry, sit out back for the music and drinks, and have a great time.
(4)Leigh F.
I've been here at least 30 times and it's hit or miss. A few times this place has been outstanding! Many times it's been pretty good, most of the time is mediocre. For $15 the Pad Thai should be better. It's bland, dry and under seasoned. They've given me used limes before, it's absurd. Paying more doesn't always mean it's better. Bahn Thai can be disappointing or very delicious, it's up to you if you want to gamble with that.
(2)Bill B.
This is my second time there. I had the Lovely Ginger with tofu. It was so good. They let you decide on how hot you want it. I wanted to give the tofu a chance so I ordered not so hot. The veggies were cooked just right and the sauce was just right. The tofu was fried just right. When I saw the dish for the first time I thought there is no way I'm finishing this but to tell the truth I did. The staff was great, attentive but not overly so. The deck has TV and music. Inside is casual without the TV. I'm going back.

I think that unfortunately, Bhan Thai has taken its lovely location and its position as the sole Thai restaurant in Midtown for granted and has just stopped caring. Based on my most recent experience, it seems to me that Bhan Thai is not a vegetarian-friendly restaurant, and that moreover, the staff of the restaurant does not take responsibility for ensuring that they have and communicate adequate information about the contents of their food to customers who choose not to eat meat. It is disingenuous to offer curry dishes "with tofu," implying that these are vegetarian dishes, when these dishes always include fish sauce, which is made from dead fish. I have been assured by many servers on many separate occasions that my curry was being prepared "vegetarian, no fish sauce" - yet last night I was told that this is impossible. If fish sauce is an ingredient in "vegetarian" dishes, then this should be clearly printed on the menu so that vegetarians do not eat those dishes, or patronize your establishment. (And yes - it *is* possible to make Thai food without fish sauce, if you care to exert just a little bit of effort. There are other restaurants in Memphis that do this). The manager(?) with whom I spoke claimed "country boy ignorance" (his actual words), which to me is completely unacceptable for anyone who works in food service, period. Note to the staff: vegetarians don't eat meat. Meat includes fish. People who eat fish but no other meat are called pescatarians, and just because you know one doesn't mean that all people who do not eat meat will willingly eat fish. YOUR sensibilities and choices do not dictate mine. Maybe you're a person who eats chicken a day or so past the sell-by date. Does that mean that your customers should, too? Grow up, enter the twenty-first century, and act like you give two ships about your customer's preference. I've eaten at Bhan Thai for YEARS (I remember when they opened), and gradually I've watched the prices go up ($14 for Thai fried rice? Seriously?), and the quality go down, and the attitudes of the staff go from passable to apathetic at best (or downright snarky and obnoxious, such as the time when I called to place a takeout order on a busy night and they refused to take the order, stating, "We're the most popular restaurant in town tonight, and if you want the food that much, you can come up here and wait for two hours like everyone else in the restaurant"). I just kept giving this place the benefit of the doubt, but I'm done with that now. So why two stars instead of one? The patio is nice, if you can get a seat.
(2)Kimberly Q.
Best thai in memphis... The pad Thai is good I usually order spicy. Thai fried rice is very good and the appetizer sampler. I really like the Tom yum soup too.
(5)John H.
Pretty darn good service! Waiter and staff are happy and have great attitudes. Good food too :) ...although not the best Thai we've had, it's probably the best in Memphis area. ***They don't have chopsticks in the house so be prepared to shovel the food in ;) ...
(3)Trivedi A.
It is good Thai place, but more Americanized. It is also little more expensive as opposed to other Thai restaurants around. I recommend Chang Mai noodles and Chicken Satay.
(4)Greg H.
I really like this place. The staff is great and the deck/courtyard is a wonderful place to be when the weather cooperates. Good Thai and reasonable prices. I always ask the kitchen to "kick up the heat" on my dish and they're happy to oblige. Sadly, they don't take reservations, so I'll never take clients there (would be great if they were on OpenTable!), but you can call ahead.
(5)Chelsea S.
I love this place! If you're here for lunch do yourself a favor and get the crazy noodle bowl. It is great. If you're a new comer these are some great introductory dishes. The masaman curry is very good if you're looking for something kinda sweet and not spicy. The salmon panang is amazing and a must try for dinner. Chang mai noodles are very tasty as well as the pad thai. Branch out though if you're feeling adventurous. You won't regret it!
(4)Debbie P.
Located in a midtown converted home, the ambiance of the restaurant is very warm and exotic. It's a great place to eat in the evening. The food was good, but what I ordered that night was not particularly remarkable. The service was extremely good. I wish they had more parking.
(3)Ben B.
My friend told me how much I would love this place and oh was she right. I had the salmon panang and it was AWESOME. The panang curry sauce that comes on the dish is by far the best sauce that my mouth has experienced. It will be very tough for me to come here and order something different on my next trip. We went for dinner on a Sunday night and we were able to walk in and get a seat right away. I snuck a peak at the lunch menu and I will be making a lunch trip there in the near future.
(5)Mary Ellen J.
We ate here on 4/12/2014. Arrived about 8:20, were seated right away but it took at least 15 minutes until our server came over. He explained they were very busy and it would take 35 minutes for our dinner order to be ready, but he suggested we order an appetizer. We did so and thank goodness we did, because we did not get our dinner until 9:45 PM. The food was excellent and we really enjoyed it, but the service was very poor. Our waiter rarely checked on us and after we got our food he never asked us how it was or if we needed anything. The atmosphere and food here are great but the service could definitely have been better, even though I understand the part about being busy.
(3)Amanda C.
I discovered the deliciousness of Bhan Thai through the agency I work for, SRVS. The restaurant had been a vendor at our annual auction and wine tasting. While I had not heard about the restaurant before then, everyone I talked to leading up to the event described the place as absolutely delicious. After the event, where I tasted an egg roll and where Bhan Thai had won an award for best appetizer, I knew I had to try more! And I did, more than once. Every time I have been to Bhan Thai, I have tried something different, and each dish is incredible! My favorites (so far) are the crazy noodle bowl, the Siam beef and the teriyaki chicken. If you haven't been there, go soon! It's a charming atmosphere with delicious food and excellent service!
(5)Joe S.
Bhan Thai is, in my estimation, far better than Bangkok Alley. Not that the standard for Thai food in Memphis is particularly high, but still, this is my favorite place. The best part of Bhan Thai is the atmosphere. The restaurant is a converted Midtown mansion, and the various dining rooms feel intimate and warm. The experience is comparable to dining at Iris (food aside), but at a fraction of the cost. Here's a tip: if you make a reservation for 8 or more people, there's a good chance you'll get an entire private room to yourself. On nice evenings, the outdoor patio is also superb. The value is good, all things considered. Thai food should not be expensive, and Bhan Thai is probably middle-of-the road in pricing. Given the atmosphere, however, it feels like you are getting a fine-dining experience at a great bargain. This brings me to the food. Normally, if the quality of food were third on my list of things to say about a restaurant, it would be a terrible failure. Here, Bhan Thai succeeds despite its slightly above average food. My gold-standard of Thai food is a place in downtown St. Louis called Sen Thai. Bhan Thai can't touch that place, but it does a reasonably good job of offering satisfying standard Thai fare. And again, it's way better than Bangkok Alley.
(4)Sandra M.
Sorry to do the "5" but this really was "..as good as it gets!" The food was delicious, the atmosphere relaxing yet trendy. The staff was exceptional not overly attentive but perfectly aware of when our glass was near empty. I enjoyed the green curry which was spicy but not unbearable. My husband had the red snapper and faked death to avoid sharing even a taste! Most certainly a favorite spot of mine!!
(5)Valencia B.
I recently ate here yesterday, 10/25. The did was OK however the service was beyond substandard. Not to make this a racial issue but as an AA it was evident in the service we recieved. First, upon arrival no one greeted us. As several other customers arrived they were given the option to go outside and wait at the bar as the bartender/host would get them when their seat was ready. I got offered nothing. When we were given our seat, he simply pointed in the direction of our table. No escort or anything. As we were there, we only saw our server twice; once to bring out our food and to bring our check. I most definetly left a note on the bill about my disappointment. Im hesitant to go back :( Heard a lot of good things about here but the way I was treated NOT!
(2)Amanda M.
I can't believe I haven't written a review for this place until now. I LOVE Bhan Thai. The food is great, the atmosphere is nice, and the prices are reasonable. Plus, they give you a lot of food so I always get to have some delicious Pad Thai for lunch the next day too. They also have an upstairs room that's great for a big group.

Rarely thrilled but never disappointed.
(3)Larrie R.
Seriously...not a better place in Memphis for Thai food. (And I have been to Thailand!). So happy they are in my neighborhood of midtown!
(5)Samantha B.
I feel this place is more expensive that it is worth. I've been twice and wasn't really impressed. The food is just ok. I honestly like Bangkok Alley better. In fact, there's one close to this location.
(3)Abbey V.
I should've taken the advice of previous yelp reviews, but instead, sadly went with the referral of friends. This is the neatest of locations, with such a cool patio, and seemingly very clean. The food however, was so sad, and ridiculously pricey. The Pad Thai was BLAND - no flavor whatsoever, and very little chicken. The drunkard's noodles was tasty, but the amount of excess oil was disgusting. Think of red oil pooling all over your plate and then continuing to drop off of your fork. Name the country, and I've had Thai food there - it's my favorite food on the planet, and I seek it wherever I go - this restaurant is poor. You're paying for a clean, neat place to have pseudo-Asian food. I'd take a franchise, like Pei Wei perhaps, any day over this.

Went to Bhan Thai for a birthday dinner and I not only gave a gift but received one as well which was having the opportunity to eat here. I've often time drove past but never found the time to stop. The moment we arrived I was impressed with the timely seating of our group of 12 on the outside patio. After entering and walking through the inviting dinner area that made you feel as if you were peeking into to someone's private home, we made it to the outside area. Immediately hit with the music from a pretty good live band and the energy of people, friends and strangers interacting at the bar. We were tucked away in a lil corner to ourselves yet close enough to the action to feel totally involved. Our server came quickly and did a wonderful job despite me having the decide long than anyone of what I would have. I finally settled on broc and chicken because I love garlic and it was in a garlic soy sauce which I could have had in a glass it was sooo good. The chicken and broc was seasoned perfectly, the portion was spot on and the price was extremely good. We got to hear live music, on an outside patio, eating great food with the awesome atmosphere they have created for a more than reasonable price. I would have expected to pay much more than what I did.. Also at one point the Chef came to our table and introduced himself to those he didn't already know and asked how was the food which is always a plus. Overall without a doubt you all should visit and frequent Bhan Thai.. We will definitely be back because I left trying to decide when to return.....

Spent years in asia, so I've been a bit disappointed by the cuisine available in memphis. Having said that, Bhan Thai makes a lovely NON-greasy pad thai. Their other noodle dishes are delicious, but not as light and healthy as most "real" Thai noodle dishes are. The little ones love it too -- and they're pickier about their thai food than I am. We often pick up pad thai for take-out.
(4)Wayne R.
This place is awesome. The food is great. The atmosphere is amazing. They have an inside part and an outside part. Their food is spicy, which I love. Their portions are plentiful. I love their Thai Tea; it is sweet as ice cream. I ordered the red curry on both visits. Don't skip this place, every dollar spent is worth it. Bring your date here. She will love you.
(5)Amanda M.
A certain gem of Midtown. The atmosphere is cozy and perfect for a date or a nice dinner out. The patio is soo verdant and inviting offering shade and ambiance. The portions are huge and the prices are quite reasonable. The beer selection is the only thing I might say is lacking, but there are plenty of drinks to choose from. It has been and continues to be one of my very favorite spots when I visit Memphis. I have had no problem with the service, but it's more or less no frills. Efficient but not overly friendly or accommodating. The price and atmosphere more than make up for it. :-)
(5)Jennifer R.
I just love this place. Every time I eat here I always get the same thing. Yaya I know that is so boring.....but I just LOVE the pad thai noodles! I just can't get enough of them. I know I should branch out and try something new when I go next time but most likely I will end up getting the pad thai noodles again! And I just love the back patio! I feel like I am in a little forrest. Summer times are the best for sitting outside on their patio with a nice cold drink in your hand!

As a weekly business traveler to Memphis downtown I have been restricted to downtown area restaurants due to long work hours. Last night some co-workers got together and decided to venture a bit further out and try Bahn Thai since it had a 4 star rating on yelp. The restaurant is in a residential neighborhood in an old house. The ambience was nice and restaurant was quite full on a Tuesday night around 8:30PM which was encouraging. There were 3 of us and we had the Tom yum soup for starters. The soup was very watery and fairly tasteless. Then we had the spinach delight with Tofu which was almost decent, the Green curry chicken was pretty much inedible and so was the Basil fried rice. There seemed to be no salt of seasoning in the food. We kept piling on the chilli paste to add some flavor. The service was below average, I had to summon the waiter from a distance to re-fill my water couple times. Bottom line, it seems like a decent spot if you don't care too much for the food. But the downtown thai restaurants have much better thai food than this place for sure
(2)Paul J.
Best Thai food, service and patio in Memphis. Love the Spring Rolls (unique) and Pad Thai

Ok, it was a while ago (few mo the) that I ate at Bahn Thai, but I hadn't yet gotten an IPad or discovered the awesomeness of Yelp. :) I went with a friend who loves, loves, LOVES Bahn Thai. I love Thai food, and after eating at a restaurant in Cleveland, OH that was AMAZING (Banana Blossom) a few weeks prior, I was craving some good Thai food. This was not it. We started with the fried spring rolls, which were good, but certainly nothing spectacular. I mean, it's really hard to mess up fried food. My friend ordered the chicken fried rice, which was ok, but again, doesn't jive with four star rating. I had the spicy garlic with pork, which was even less impressive. The meat was bland and seemed steamed, as opposed to pan fried in a super hot wok. The dish was completely mild. My dad would have said, "What? Are they making baby formula?" :) As for the flavor...it was just whatever. Not disgusting or anything, just...forgettable. I also didn't realize the cabbage was raw - definitely would prefer flash fried with the rest of it. So, I would rate the food at about a 2.5, but I'm docking a half star because it is so overpriced. Maybe it's because I prefer little hole-in-the-wall places that might not be trendy, done up restaurants, but that have authentic, delicious food (Shanghai is a good example). So, if you're looking for a restaurant that LOOKS cool and you want to pay extra and sacrifice taste for that coolness, by all means Bahn Thai is for you. Me? I'd rather have my socks blown off with amazing food in an unlikely place. It's more than a meal...it's an experience.

If you're in the mood for decent Thai food, then Bhan Thai may be what you're looking for. I ordered takeout here, so I didn't get to get the whole dining experience. But from a quick glance it looks nice, and it'd definitely looks to be a great place for a first date. Takeout on a Friday night took 15 minutes for them to prepare, so that was pretty amazing to me. Really fast to prepare. We got the red and green curries. It was definitely very sweet, but nothing unbearable. The flavor of the red curry was just right, but the green curry was not the green curry I expected. It's not that it wasn't good, just different. If given a choice I'd go with the red curry. The quality and taste of the food is probably a 3.75, above average, but nothing spectacular. The price point is what knocks everything down to around 3.25 stars, as the food is a bit pricey IMO. The food is definitely good quality, but $30 for takeout on 2 entrees is definitely a bit much for what you get. I will most likely come back here when I get a craving for Thai mainly out of convenience as I can literally throw a baseball from my place and knock out a window out of Bhan Thai, but if I lived elsewhere I would probably come 1-2 times a year. All in all 3.25 stars.

Food, atmosphere, and owner/service great! Would highly recommend dining here. They also have great t-shirts ;)

I feel compelled to review Bhan Thai now, even though I have been there several times. The thing is, I have consistently gotten sick after. This isn't just my experience, but my partner's as well, and we have indulged in Thai food in every city we've been to. We've given Bhan Thai a second..third..now fourth chance, and likely will not be returning. In 2010, I went here for my birthday, and I still remember what I had -- a Thai iced coffee and Spicy Old Man (eggplant dish). While it was delicious, I remember getting ill and having to leave the nightclub where we were celebrating post-dinner. At home, I was in writhing pain with a temperature, red face, and spent my evening on the toilet. We wrote this off as a fluke, and went to Bhan Thai again in 2011 with some work colleagues. We were seated in the private room with the gorgeous Buddha paintings. Right away, we noticed that there were gnats and mosquitoes everywhere, and we were getting bitten. We swatted what bugs we could, but continued with our meal. Again, I got sick after, and so did my partner. The third time I was invited to Bhan Thai, I had a drink and didn't order any food. So far, so good. Fast forward to the other day. A friend wanted to have her birthday celebration there. Again, I figured I would give the restaurant a chance. I thought I was playing it safe with the Spring Rolls and Beef with Broccoli. Nope! Sick again. My partner and I are definitely not going back.

I lived around the corner for a few years and ate here quite regularly. They have some good dishes and the back patio can be a nice place to eat and have a few cocktails. ( Fun on Friday nights watching the football games in the back yard) The Tiger Cry is one of the better appetizers in the city and is well worth the try. The soups have never impressed me and I would skip them. The one problem I have noticed is the chicken in dishes can be very chewy. Worth the try but can be a little inconsistent.

Situated in Midtown, just behind Crump Stadium, in a house. You very much get the feeling that you're actually someone's personal guest in their house. Although, there are plenty of tables, so you don't feel cramped. There are a few smaller rooms with tables for two, for a more romantic feel. In the back, there's a decent sized patio with an outdoor bar. I've heard that they sometimes have live music on the patio, as well. Now, on to the good stuff. The food is divine. I've never had a bad experience at Bhan Thai. My "go to" dish is the spicy old man, which I always call, "dirty old man," because I'm quite mature. However, their curry dishes are absolutely amazing and the servings are definitely generous. Over the years, I think I've tried every appetizer on the menu. They're all wonderful; however, the spring rolls are my least favorite. Drizzled with mustard and honey, the mix just didn't do it for me. I also strayed away from the "dirty old man" and tried the red curry. I was not disappointed. The service was exceptional. On my last visit, I was unusually indecisive and the waitress was extremely patient...I dare you to look at the menu and not have the same problem!! :-P

I love Bhan Thai. The patio is gorgeous, and the inside of the restaurant is very nice. The owner and staff are great and are usually very attentive. I always have the Tiger Cry or the Chicken satay for an appetizer and the Massaman curry with chicken is my favorite dinner. There is always plenty of food leftover for lunch the next day.

By now you guys know that I frequently daydream about food. Usually, those daydreams involve food I've eaten in the last 24 hours. Food like the potstickers I had at Bhan Thai last night. I'm not sure what I was expecting when I took my first bite, but they were the best potstickers I've ever had. Rather than being slimy, steamed and dense, they were stuffed with pork and fresh vegetables and lightly fried. I highly recommend adding some of the sweet and sour peanut sauce. For dinner, I had the red curry with chicken. It was a huge plate of tender chicken, red and green bell peppers, bamboo shoots and basil, covered in light red curry. The curry wasn't super thick or spicy (though, I'm sure you can ask for more heat if you want it). Red Curry from Bhan Thai, Memphis, Tenn. Bhan Thai is located in a converted house in Central Gardens. It's intimate and cozy, with only a few tables in each room. When the weather is nice, they've got a huge covered patio and bar out back. It's worth noting that most of the entrees at Bhan Thai can be cooked with chicken, beef, shrimp or tofu. Also, most of the curries and noodles are priced under $15, with the house special dishes priced around $16 - $25.

Not the most authentic Thai food I've had but still pretty tasty. Bhan Thai has an awesome outdoor bar and patio which wins them an extra star in my review. They have live music on the patio Thursday through Sunday. The menu is pretty large and I've tasted many of their dishes over the years. I highly recommend the Crispy Duck. I like mine with the sauce on the side. It's fantastic!

Really enjoy this spot! Inside feels like an old home. Curry noodles are amazing. Pad Thai and Pad See Ew are solid (latter could use more veggies). Do not care for the "fresh" spring rolls - every time I get the rice wrapper is hard/chewy in a bad way and sauce on top is weird. But everything else is lovely!

Amazing. This place got me through a stressful year as my reward to myself. Such good food!

I thought it was great. I don't know what these other folks are talking about... minus Josh H. The food was good, and the atmosphere was hard to beat. Had a nice little guitar and piano duo playing outside by the tiki bar.... that's right, tiki bar... I honestly don't even remember what we had to eat, but It was a beef dish of some sort. Lots of flavor... and the menu had so many options/combinations and spices... just go, see for yourself.

I love Bhan Thai. I have tried many other Thai restaurants and none of them even compare. Their best dish is Tum Yum (tofu) soup. This soup is just about as simple as soup gets but it is the most amazing unique flavor i have ever tasted......and single handily changed my life. :) (their version of Tum Yum is unique and I haven't found it prepared the same anywhere else, so if you you normally don't like it...try it again) The beef salad, yellow curry, beef satay, lettuce wraps and Thai tea are also great. I've been there probably 25 times and the service was top notch just about everytime. I'm coming back to Memphis this spring and Bhan Thai is the first place that I will go!

In town for a conference, I found Bhan Thai thanks to the Yelp app on my phone. I ordered to-go, had a drink at the bar while I waited, and was very kindly entertained by the bartender, who also may have been the manager? Regardless, my panang chicken was very good, although I was slightly disappointed that the vegetables were much different than I'm accustomed to in Wisconsin. I prefer zucchinin to the green peppers that were used, but overall, it was a good experience. If I'm in the area again, I'll definitely return.

I have been going to Bhan Thai for several years now and felt it deserved a comment. It is one of the more hidden gems in Memphis, but worth the search. I am not sure what the 2 star reviewer had to eat or what else but that certainly didn't sound like any of my 20+ visits. The food is always good and reasonably priced. My biggest issue is picking my entree with so many great options. And if you have friends who aren't down with Thai food there are some more middle of the road options. And of course there is the bonus of Thai beers. A few negatives: parking can be tricky at times, the service is not always great but it certainly is not bad, the porch is very close to a high school football field so Friday nights in the fall are not great.

Great Thai Food.

Great place for quick Thai take-out for lunch. Several times a month, a couple of co-workers and I order take-out from Bhan Thai and the food never disappoints. It is americanized-thai, but it is still the best I've had in Memphis.
(4)J Z.
wellllll.. it's americanized-thai food. and for americanized-thai food, it's pretty decent. it wasn't anything to write home about, that's for sure. *im also south-east asian, and have been to thailand many times. so im definitely pickier than most. **this place is better than sawadii anyway.

Bhan Thai is not the best place in Memphis for Thai food. It's really expensive and the service is less than stellar. But I did really enjoy eating there. We sat outside on the back porch and ate a really great meal- I had the tuna which was to die for- it was perfectly cooked and so spicy that my eyes welled. You can adjust the spice levels of the dishes but I can't imagine anyone would go to a Thai joint if they didn't appreciate a little fire . All in all it's a nice place to eat- but check out some cheaper alternatives first like Bangkok Alley on Germantown Pkwy.

I have eaten at a lot of Thai places. And I do mean a lot, I count them in the dozens. It is far and away my favorite type of food, and I make a point of trying every Thai restaurant that I come across. I will admit that my sample size here is small, as I have only eaten here once, and I didn't even order an appetizer. What I did get though is a Thai standard and one that I have eaten at many restaurants and a good place to start a comparison. That dish of course was Red Curry. The curry was extremely sweet, sweeter than all but a handful of the places I have eaten at, but it melded the sweetness with a heart richness that made it exceptional rather than just sweet. The pork in it was prepared well and the spice level was very accurate and perfectly prepared for how I requested it. The atmosphere and decor is nice, and the fact its in an old house is quaint, but Thai places tend to always be decorated nicely and I would just consider it normal rather than something to hang its hat on. There was one problem though, the service was actually rather terrible and I had to wait for my drink to be refilled more than once. Not really a good thing when you are eating a very spicy dish. This is of course inexcusable for a restaurant of any ilk at all. Overall though the food is very tasty and if you are in midtown give it a try. Its not so much better than other Thai places though that I would drive out of downtown to eat there or if another Thai place was closer. I still prefer Sawaddi.
