Much better review of the Bayou this time. Our timing seemed to be just right this time. We had no problem getting a place on the patio. We had plenty of time and we were not hurried at all. Food was good, beer was flowing. Unfortunately, it started to rain. Staff was great at helping us to hustle inside and got us set up at a new table very quickly. The service was good, attentive and not pushy at all. We had a nice time this time, enjoyed ourselves.

Bayou, I love you! Second time for brunch and you do not disappoint! Bloody Mary's are outstanding, and your sausage and cheese biscuits were so good. Can't wait to come back..

I came here with my roommate after work one night around 1030ish. The place was pretty empty so it wasn't as crowded as it seems to regularly be. I don't have much to say about this place that could be useful. Just "blah". It is supposed to be a cajun themed restaurant, but it has a weird Irish pub/hipster bar feel to it. Never had that feeling before in a cajun place although the decor definitely reflects the Great state of Louisiana. The place seems like they serve their fair share of beers, I had a blueberry beer that I cannot recall the name of, but It did not disappoint. Apparently you can buy a mug for their "beer club" and it is a yearly membership for 50 bucks and you can drink all their beers on tap after that for 3 bucks each. Pretty good deal for a local or for a broke college student I think. The food was ok. I ordered just plain chicken strips with fries and half a dozen oysters. The chicken strips were pretty delicious and I mixed the ketchup with some amazing hot sauce that has horseradish in it and it blew my mind. The oysters on the other hand were dry and had possibly been sitting out for a while. The only positive was that I found a pearl that was slightly bigger than a BB!! The service was ok. The bartender seemed like he was preoccupied with closing procedures and helping other servers clean up and fold up silverware so that could definitely improve. Other than what I have posted up, I won't go out of my way to come here again, but I would not mind giving them another shot.

Bloody Mary was way too salty, tasted like brine. Debris sandwich was also too salty. Potato skins tasted a little old. Key lime pie was excellent They had a nice crowd for the Grizz game

I love the cajon food here. I've had Brunch and Supper here multiple times and they always have great cajon food. The oysters are huge and taste fresh, the Bloody Mary's are the best I've ever had, and all the seafood dishes are amazing.

Feels like I'm becoming a regular again. I think I'm here two to three time a week. Really glad I like Louisiana food. Lol

Sat and waited 20 min with not one wait staff to come and wait on us and it was pretty dead maybe a total of 7 tables with people at them. I could understand if they were busy but they were not so we got up and left. Oh and I watched one male waiter come out make eye contact 3 times and walk off and this is the same staffer that told us it was self seating so he knew we were there.

Living in Memphis, you get used to Bar-B-Que and good music. Bayou, while presenting an excellent atmosphere for music, conversation, sand sports, gives you an experience of Louisiana. Po-boys and good beer; that's only a portion of the menu. I've been here a couple of times with friends and my sister and it's been a experience to witness each time. Here tonight with the cast and crew of "New Voices", a production of the University of Memphis' Dance Department. Check out their reviews .

Fettuccine jambalaya is always my favorite. Service is always good and the servers always make good recommendations on what to get. I'm glad I picked for me & my family to eat here for dinner.

Met friends for lunch on Sunday - the place was packed. Saints football seemed to be a big draw. I got a house salad and a bowl on Seafood Gumbo. Salad was fresh - wish they made at least one of their dressings in-house. The Thousand Island I had was ok but definitely from a bottle. The service was good despite an overflow crowd. Food came out hot and fresh. The Seafood Gumbo had great flavor but could have used a little less rice. First time in a while that I did not add a good amount of hot sauce to my Gumbo - it was very tasty without it.

I usually love this place to watch a game. As we were there for on Friday nite, post winter storm 2015. The bar was empty. The wait staff and bartenders are extremely friendly and welcoming. I don't know who this person was who was behind the bar, a "manager" perhaps, who did not acknowledge me or ask if i wanted anything, sitting with her back to the bar and her feet up on the cooler. After about 5 minutes and my clearing my throat a few times she finally turned around and sneered at me. We are frequent patrons but I was clearly being harrassed. We were there for an hour or so and this young woman continued to give me the "stink eye" for the duration. I have met the owners on several occasions and they are very friendly and make every effort to be accommodating, I doubt very seriously they would have approved of this behavior.

The service is just really bad here...which is why I'll probably never be back. Ok, ok, I'll probably be back, but I won't be happy about it. The food is good, the drinks are good, the patio is good...but the blatant disregard the waiters have for the customers is just ridiculous. And this is more than a one time thing. I've waited and waited and waited for someone to take my order or bring me another drink too many times to count. So I guess this is the perfect place for people who just want a place to sit for awhile to "hang"...actually, now that I think about it, that does seem to be the clientele it attracts... Their sister restaurant is next door at La Chardonnay...they never seem to have that problem which is why I end up there at least once a week.

Some good staff some really bad staff. Some decent food some not so decent food. Big tvs for sports and buckets of cold beer. Pretty much an average place all around but it serves it's purpose from time to time.

Brunch is amazing! All of the food is amazing! Servers and bartenders are super friendly! The seafood Parmesan dip is my favorite appetizer. The Monday-Friday specials are a huge deal! Mac-mosa's are super delicious. Lots of tvs for sports watching! Love this place!

I came here yesterday with a friend since I had some time to kill before class started. Also we chose here specifically because they have a BOGO entree coupon. We were worried about whether we would have to buy an actual entree to use it or not but the waiters are not picky about that and let us use it for whatever. We chose to sit outside because it was gorgeous outside. It was fun sitting out on the wooden patio listening to the fun music they played. Also we got really good service even though we were outside. I noticed the place was mostly empty (likely due to the odd time) and half of the patrons were outside with us, so maybe that's why. But service was great! I really wanted Fettuccine Jambalaya and the Seafood Gumbo since when I think of creole food I think of those two things, but with my friend's food allergies we could only get the Gumbo (he's allergic to ham and it was all mixed in and couldn't be taken out) and the Fettuccine Acadian. I'm sad to say I wasn't really impressed with the gumbo. It just didn't have a good flavor. I don't doubt that it was good quality gumbo, I just doubt that gumbo is meant for me. We both really loved the Fettuccine Acadian. The only sad thing about that is that it didn't settle well on my stomach. I felt like I might be sick for the next few hours. In general, it was a great experience and I loved it, but I don't think creole food is for me! Oh well, it was still fun experimenting.

Badass brunch with a killer bloody mary. Ive had the Mediterranean Omlet and it is awsome. The creamy feta seems to blend into the eggs.

Excellent brunch fare -- in fact, strangers stopped me and asked what I was eating out of absolute envy. The meal you want is the Creole Benedict, but sub something else for the grits (way too runny). The crawfish is fantastic, the biscuit is fluffy and the hollandaise is spicy and creamy. For drinks, the spicy Bloody Mary is fantastic. Pro tip: build your own omelette isn't on the menu, but I recommend it enthusiastically -- get some crawfish, potatoes, whatever you want. Recommended: but make CERTAIN to sit on the patio and sub out the grits.

We've been doing a slow survey through the new restaurants in the fabulously renewed Overton Square. We landed at Bayou Bar and Grill last Friday evening after seeing a movie. I dropped my wife off (in anticipation of a wait for a table) and parked the car in the garage. She called me as I was parking and said the place was mostly empty so she would be picking a table. When I walked in, I was surprised at the available tables. It seemed that at about 1900, 80% of the tables were empty. I found my wife and sat down in the too-dim secondary room. 1. The Service: Rather bizarre approach. She kind of wandered around, never really asking if we wanted to order. VERY slow service. We just looked at each other and did the "I really enjoy the time that we're spending together..." thing. We really felt neglected though. At one point, we didn't see our waitress for about 15 minutes. 2. The Menu: Not really as Cajun as I expected. It was missing some standard NOLA items that would have been nice to see. 3. The Prices: OK. I don't think that they could charge any less being in Overton Square. However, if you're going to charge these prices, you better bring your food up to meet the expectation that the prices create. 4. The Food: A) Mushroom Ravioli with chicken in a parmesan cream sauce with sundried tomatoes. The ravioli were AWESOME. Tender and earthy - flavorful just the way you'd expect a mushroom dish to be. The parmesan cream sauce was also spot on. The chicken was WAY overcooked. Really, unabashedly, unapologetically, overcooked. Cooking 101 - Pay attention to the chicken. B) 3 Sliders with fries. I chose the duck confit, crispy chicken, and prime rib sliders. Each of the sliders had a dab of some kind of aioli that didn't contribute much to the flavor. The buns that they come on were perfect. 1)Duck confit slider: Tender and flavorful. Needed some acid on the sandwich though. It was very one-note. 2) Prime Rib slider: Good flavor but very sparse on the meat. 3) Crispy chicken: Why anybody thought that this version was a good idea baffles me. It was (apparently), a breast piece pounded flat, breaded, fried, and then CUT IN HALF. Not sure how long ago it was cooked, or what happens to the other half of the little piece on my sandwich. ABSOLUTELY NO SEASONING WAS EMPLOYED IN ANY FASHION IN THE PREPARATION OF THIS PIECE OF CHICKEN. Further, it wasn't crispy. And yes, it was VERY overcooked. There is an outside chance that this was a Sysco product, although Sysco has the good sense to season their frozen chicken products. THE FRIES: Ore Ida would be proud (in fact, I think that they ARE proud) of these fries. They're simply the frozen, seasoned fries that you can buy in any freezer section. When I saw those fries arrive (I had to reach across the table and take the plate from the kitchen runner) I suspected that I wasn't going to be happy. 5. The Appetizer: Yes, this should be in the review sooner, but I forgot about it. 1/2 Dozen Oysters on the half shell. Lousy quality. All different sizes, from small (my favorite) to huge. The shucking was only halfway completed - the oysters were not cut from their shell. And yes, I've spent a lot of time in NOLA, so my expectations for oysters is pretty high. 6. Dessert: Bread Pudding: Pale cube of bread pudding (pretty good flavor) with caramel sauce straight out of a jar drizzled over it. The Bottom Line: This is a restaurant that may have some good ideas, and some good recipes, but they are so lazy that it's pretty frustrating being a customer. Some of the shortcuts that they take with pre-prepared ingredients are baffling to me, since fresh made alternatives are not that much more work. We will NOT being going back to Bayou Bar and Grill.

When I am craving some mudbugs or other sea creatures this is normally my place. Not only is it walking distance from my house, but they also allow you to bring your child in. I come her for numerous things including brunch. Recently I tried the Macmosa which is a steal!! It is a double mimosa with Grand Marnier added for only $6.50!! It taste great and takes your brunch up a notch! The guy bartender has always been pretty cool. He talks to you alittle bit, answers any questions you have and he is just an overall good bartender in Midtown. As far as the servers go it can be alittle wishy washy. But I really don't care bc it just hurts them in the end not me. I love the daily lunch specials they have. I have tried them all and let me tell ya something, it is good and the price is reasonable as heck!! I just recently tried the Cajun Meatloaf with cheese grits and it was good and spicy. I normally get the cajun pasta, seafood dip, oysters, wings, or po boy, but I'm glad I tried something new. The cheese grits weren't as good as I've had before during brunch but they were still good and edible. Another thing I like is how they are true to their spices and even offer some other hot sauces and I think one may be local. I'm not big on spice so some food items I have avoided. One regret I had was the chicken sandwich with the zydeco sauce. It was so good I ate it but man oh man was my mouth burning afterwards. My husband probably would have shaken his head at me for eating it bc he knows I'm a sucker for heat. The bar area unfortunately is carrying mostly local beers on draft right now and I'm sorry but none of them are very girl friendly except Ghost River and I am a beer girl!! They can make any shot under the sun with all those crazy vodka flavors I saw and I also just discovered the $60 beer club mugs. The bartender said they start collecting money around November for the annual dues. It may be something to look into if I can enjoy $3 Ghost River all year long.

Bayou Bar & Grill was excellent from start to finish. I started out with the phenomenal alligator chili fries. Delicious! I had to try the soup sampler, and I am so glad I did. Every single one of the soups were amazing, but the standouts were the seafood gumbo and the crawfish bisque. I would gladly dig into a giant bowl of either one of those any day. The soup sampler I especially recommend because it lets you try all of the soups, and it also comes with some rice and bread. It really is a full meal. That being said, I also got the Crab Cakes because I like doing a comprehensive review. They are the best crab cakes I have had outside of the east coast. Amazing, with a spicy remoulade. Also, you get three so it is a very generous portion that I ended up having to share. For sides I got red cabbage (acidic and what a punch of flavor) and spinach (perfectly cooked). I wish I could talk to you about desserts, but I was so stuffed that they will have to wait till next time! Park in the garage, walk across the street, and get you some fantastic food at the Bayou!

Bayou is usually one of my most recommended restaurants in midtown, GREAT food and service. This visit however, was by far not the greatest. Our server, Becca, was very rude and made the experience very unenjoyable. We asked what was good on the menu, willing to try something new" after naming two items she stated "Yall are making this difficult."I would hate for a first time customer to come and experience such service. Other than today's visit, I'm usually pleased in my frequent dine in experiences at this restaurant!

Let's just say that I did not expect much from a seafood place that was not located near the ocean. However, this place was great! Our waiter was courteous and my glass was never below half full - an OSI training standard that I am delighted to find in other servers! We had oysters Rockefeller, the jacuzzi, and catfish with Acadia sauce. All of which was delicious! My only complaint: there was only two scallops in the $17 jacuzzi meal and they were extremely fishy. Besides that the place was great.

This place is loud and packed. It is a fun place to watch the Saints play "Who Dat." The food is spot on. I recommend this place if you have a group that wants to get a filling meal and some drinks before hitting up Overton Square.

  • Shane S.

I've given this place two chances and the food here is just not that great nor is the atmosphere, unless you are out on the patio on a sunny 75 degree day. The jambalaya was goopy and the taste wasn't significant or distinct. Not sure why the ratings are so high for this place?

  • Corey F.

Horrible service the last 4 times I've been here. I have frequented this place for the past 2 years, but lately it's been very difficult to even get a drink. Two times my girlfriend and I have gotten up and left because no one would even acknowledge our presence, even after we sat at the bar for 15 minutes. Absolutely unacceptable. Mr and Mrs Baker need to get a handle on their staff.

    (2)
  • Phillip L.

Mimosas are good, but we had to look the menu up on our phone some physical copies weren't offered until after the drinks arrived. It took the server 28 minutes to tell us the kitchen was out of eggs at brunch.

  • Bobby M.

Bayou brunch, never again. The food is SHIT. Cold and greasy served with a side of "too cool" attitude. They're out of almost every beer. And the place is run by child like idiots. They REFUSED to make good on any food or anything else I paid for.

    (1)
  • Karen L.

Eh -- I'm not a fan of the Bayou. Their patio is decent, but kind of small, and unfortunately that's the best thing they've got going for themselves. They occasionally have fresh oysters, but the food is pretty forgettable for the most part. The menu is just Cajun-flavored bar food, much of it fried, none of it really very good. Let's just say, if I did go back here, it wouldn't be for the food. Actually, I wouldn't come back here for anything, since the service is typical Midtown, "I could care less." If you're looking for a bar, this place is adequate, but that's as far as it goes for me.

Great food and great service! The brunch is excellent. My daughter had the Philly cheesesteak. It was delicious. The popcorn shrimp basket was great too, although, the popcorn shrimp is very very small. You'll enjoy the food here. We sure did!

Overton Square is returning to a new glory. New businesses and restaurants are moving in. The area is getting a make-over. However, let's not forget those restaurants that were already there. Bayou Bar and Grill is a fun seafood restaurant. The prices are not too high either. The drinks are always good. This particular day we went for brunch. On Sundays, they have have screwdrivers, mimosas and bloody mary specials. If you like your bloody mary's spicy, be sure to ask. They have a non advertised pepper infused vodka. In the spring and summer, they have a great patio. Some brunch suggestions from me are the cheese grits with an omelet with Andouille sausage and whatever else you want in it. I had the steak and eggs last time. If you're hungry, it's a big steak. For lunch and dinner, I like their grouper. You can get it as an entree or on a salad if you want to watch those calories. I actually just recently tried grouper. I like it because it has a heavier meatier taste about it. If you've never been, you're missing out!

Really a big fan of this place! Great atmosphere.Tvs inside, pool table, Outside deck eating (smoking allowed), quick friendly staff. Drinks are great! The poboys and aligator chili, baskets, bisque...all my favs. Price is good for what you get..other favs I have in midtown I think are a bit over priced but this place is on point. Next time you are in the neighborhood I would def try this place out if you haven't been. Ask for Gene...he is awesome! :) OH! And the oysters when in season..AMAZING! No grit in the raw ones...LOVE!

Bayou is hands down my favorite restaurant in Memphis. Maybe ever. I lived just down the street on Madison and McLean and could be found with my roommate and best friend at Bayou at least three times a week (no shame!). It has just the right mix of great food and no pretentiousness that makes it the perfect place to be a regular. Everything is delicious! The burgers, the chicken sandwiches, the fries, the gumbo, the red beans and rice, the mimosas, the bloody marys! My absolute favorite item, the cajun chicken pasta, is to. die. for. I STILL have sexy dreams about this pasta. Top it all off with great, friendly service, a fabulous patio, and a location in the heart of Midtown and you have the best damn restaurant in Memphis.

Great environment, prices and delicious food. I eat here every time I Adam in Memphis. They have an nice happy hour and really fun brunch. Make sure to try the Zydeco sauce...you won't regret it!

One of my favorite midtown spots to eat and watch a game. Always have the catfish beignet basket (comes with fries). Don't sleep on the salad - very good as well!

Ordered the jacuzzi which was a scallops shrimp crab concoction in a cheesy creamy small casserole dish. Delish! Rich and very satisfying. Came with better than Pete and SAMs spinach. Food was better than the atmosphere. TV s everywhere (maybe 10 of them?). Didn't help noise level that it was a Griz game Service good but our waitress was spread pretty thinly on game night!

    (4)
  • Ayesha J.

The atmosphere was pleasant...and the Buck stops there, unfortunately. Our waitress was not attentive (to say the least). I ordered the Eggs Ponchtatran, it comes on English muffin, I ordered it on biscuit. It comes with two oysters, poached eggs, and bacon. With a side of bacon and Cheddar grits. The temperature was lukewarm, small rations for the price, and not very flavorful. The atmosphere would warrant another visit...in order to try a different dish and SERVER!!

The food was tasteless and terrible. I ordered pasta and it was more like a soup. I won't be going back for food...maybe it is a good place to have drinks though.

I have to agree with what others have already stated. The new location for the Bayou Bar & Grill is much better than the old one. The menu at "The Bayou" is mostly Cajun but they also have standard bar food like burgers, wings, and fries. On Sundays you can order from brunch menu until 3pm. I have eaten here several times and I have to say that the food is A-OK; it's not great, but it's not bad either. The Bayou is a great place to catch a game on TV while enjoying a drink or two. They also have a decent patio that is frequently packed when the weather is pleasant.

Compared to other brunch locations around Memphis, I think Bayou is pretty underwhelming. I went here about a month ago for brunch and it just doesn't have the brunch 'vibe' that you get from places like the Majestic, Local, or other Memphis brunch staples. The most important components to brunch are egg/ hash/ breakfast sandiwches, light alcohol beverages, and feeling like you'd rather have brunch for 4 hours and then binge watch netflix rather than be productive. Unfortunately, I don't think Bayou Bar & Grill hits any of these components particularly well. I ordered Mac's Hash for brunch and I'd actually describe it as "bad", which is not a term I throw around lightly. Mac's Hash is supposed to include andouille sausage, crawfish, sweet potatoes, peppers, and onions (also 2 poached eggs, but I chose to leave those out of my dish), but what I received on my plate was essentially 65% large chunks of onions, 25% peppers, and 10% everything else. All of the good stuff (sausage, potatoes, and crawfish) had completely absorbed the onion flavor, and had lost any of its desired taste. I struggled to eat as much as I could, before giving up after eating about 30% of it and sensing that I'd smell like onions the rest of the day. The Mimosa's were subpar to what I've experienced at other brunch spots. Not only are the orange juice and champagne very cheap (and mine was served warm), but there's no option to get a bottle of champagne and pitcher of orange juice to mix them at your desired concentration. Regardless if the food had turned out alright, it's not a place I could see myself having an extended brunch at. It's dark and somewhat cramped inside, and it felt like the staff were pushing towards getting tables to leave after they finished their meal. I'm hoping I was there on an off day, since most reviews seem pretty positive. However, I think the Mimosas and lack of brunch 'vibe' would be fairly constant across visits, so I think I'd rather go to Majestic or Local than risk another day trying to get the smell of onions off of me.

Service was terrible. It wasn't even crowded and we had to wait forever to even get our order placed. Still not sure who are server was because we had three get our refills and a different one take our order. There were only three of us and it took over an hour to get any food. Food was average, my friend's fries were super cold but nobody came to ask us how our meals were.

I have been going to the Bayou since the mid-1990s and have never been disappointed with my food or the service. My last visit to the Bayou was a few weeks ago for my birthday. I had the full size of Red Beans and Rice. The reason to go with the fullsize order is it includes an Andouille sausage. Slow cooked red beans with light seasoning makes this an amazing tasting meal. If you like Cajun food I have to give the Bayou my highest recommendation. Also keep in mind the Fried Crawfish Po'boys are out of this world. The hidden jewel of the Bayou is some AMAZING burgers. Decent prices, excellent service and a genuine good time!!!

My favorite place to watch a game in town. Great friendly staff, local beers, and delicious food. The catfish Acadian is pure decadence. The debris is the best you will find in town and rivals any I have had in the Big Easy. Great gulf oysters and a very cool grilled oyster menu. Brunch is perfect for almost anyone. Want to watch a game? As I said perfect. If not, hang out on their patio. Great brunch drink specials, ask for the Macmossa or signature bloody. All of this and the feel of a great neighborhood bar.

Really enjoyed it. The food was pretty good - I had the special of the day - cup of gumbo with a chicken poboy - and the server was quick and charming. Fun, bar atmosphere.

Let me just start by saying GO GRIZZ! Bayou has become "da spot" for my crew any night there is a Grizzlies game or Memphis basketball game. (and by crew I mean myself and one other girl along with our boyfriends and a few other dudes). So if you spot a 6 foot something fella with a great looking gal and some other guys, holler, that is I. Usually on Friday nights when the Grizz play, Bayou is a madhouse, folks all cheering on our home team while watching on the two, that's right TWO, pull down projectors big screens that they have. Anyway, I absolutely LOVE the atmosphere of Bayou. The cajun Louisiana feel is something you can NOT get any where else. The staff is also great and will accommodate to whatever size party you have. Great beer selection although I will say that there are times they are out of the draft choice you may want. My personal favorite is Andygator and not once have they not had it. You'll thank me later. For food, I always get the seafood gumbo or, if I'm pretty hungry, I'll get the popcorn crawfish which comes with some fabulous sauces. Do yourself a favor and stop in to Bayou Bar & Grill to watch a game, drink a beer, and devour some yummy cajun-style delights.

The service was was very poor and rude!!! Unfortunately, the server was also the manager. We sat down and waited for a while for a drink order. There wasn't a crowd and we were all chatting quietly waiting. When we finally got our drinks, we had to continue to wait a llllooonngggg time for someone to take our appetizer order! When we politely signaled for the waiter for assistance, he returned in a snappy and very rude manner "I'll be there!" He then rolled his eyes and walked away. At that moment we asked a waitress for the manager in which we were informed that the manager was our waiter. When he finally came to assist us, he walked to our table and just stood there. No greeting. No, "How can I help you?" Nothing! I then told my coworkers that I was not going to spend any of my money for rude service. We then payed for the drinks and walked out. The service was horrible and unjustifiable! My first and last experience!

Bah to all the negative reviews! Sure, it's not the best food in the world, but it's damn decent bar food. Most all of the Cajun dishes done here are done well. The soup sampler is better than others have made it out to be. The wings may be the best in all of Memphis. I'm a bit a hot wing asshole, and these are damn fine hot wings. Really, about the only ones in Memphis that I didn't make myself that I enjoy. Most importantly, they have a good selection of beer, and know how to pour it properly. You can actually get a properly poured black and tan here. Amazing! Service is a bit slow, but it's the Bayou, it's supposed to be. The patio is my favorite in Memphis. We like it here because there's no pretension. It's where we go when we want a little food and lot of beer and no frilly little east memphis/suburb btches. lovingly yours, colin

Having lived in New Orleans for years and mastered Creole fare, I can tell you that this place has no business being "Cajun/Creole." The interior looks like a sports bar, hardly reminiscent of your typical New Orleans bar. The noise is loud and obnoxious. The beers are pricey, and the food...crap. I wish I could tell you I tried all the food, but I refuse to dump money to a chump representation of my beloved Creole cuisine. I can sniff a fraud very quickly. Lastly, the service is hit or miss. I know not how this place survives on inaccurately executed Creole recipes. Two final words...no thanks!

Great patio!!! Friendly staff and fast service !!! Started out with the spinach artichoke dip, but was not that impressed. Was not thoroughly mixed. For dinner had the grouper po-boy and it was absolutely delicious. Had it prepared grilled and blackened. Definitely a cool place to spend happy hour on the patio and enjoy the busy square as it comes alive once again!!!

I was really disappointed with Bayou. The service was great, don't get me wrong. But, the food was so lackluster. I had the shrimp and crawfish etouffee. The flavor was very bland. The shrimp were so tiny and the crawfish were almost non-existent. It was also loaded up with tons of tomatoes which really took away from it. I would even go as far to say that there should be no tomatoes in it at all.

We went to the Bayou last night for a quick bite close to home. I didn't really have high expectations walking into the joint and they pretty much lived up to that low standard. The place was busy due to the Memphis basketball game that was on the tube. We sat ourselves and waited a long time for someone to come over to us. We ordered some beers while we glanced at the menu. Not being too enthused by anything we saw, we asked the server for a recommendation. It is pretty bad when even the people that work there can't give you a suggestion. We ended up settling on a burger and fries for my man and the N'awling sandwich for me. The food came out quickly but my sandwich was drenched in special sauce they put on it. No joke, I couldn't even eat the bottom part of the bun it was so soggy. It was all over the plate contaminating the fries. The burger was average, nothing spectacular. Fries for both plates were cold.We ordered a second beer and it was easily 1/2 the size of the previous beer and trust me, it was not the illusion of the glass. I am happy to say that I tried it, but I wouldn't recommend it.

Went here for brunch and I'm not sure how i feel about it yet. I got a fried egg sandwich (my go to breakfast) and it was pretty good. Service was amazing. My friend enjoyed the omlette she had and the kids gobbled their grilled cheese up. WOuld love to go back and try some of their bayou specialties to give a move accurate rating... Point is: I will be back

One of my favorite patios in the city. Great for people watching. They have a nice selection of beers on tap. I've had the shrimp basket there a few times and it will hit the spot. The service is excellent & the location is central to so many other places.

Two words. Seafood Bisque. Two more words - brunch mimosas. These four words make me happy. I love this place. They do have a weekend brunch, and it does have all the basic brunch foods, plus some added cajun bonuses, but my go-to is always, always the bisque. One time, I actually asked how much they would charge me to buy a gallon of it. My son said "if you love it so much, why don't you marry it". Truth is, I would if I could. I wouldn't mind waking up to that bisque every day for the rest of my life. They also have alligator chili and some pretty good bacon wrapped shrimp. Good stuff. Go here.

We went to visit friends in Memphis for Memorial Day weekend and ordered take out from Bayou one night. My wife ordered the Anchou Crab Sauce Grouper which was very tasty. The spinach side was delicious! I ordered the Muffaletta which was very good as well! The olive spread was better than many I have had. Overall, a pleasant meal! Since we had take out, I can't comment on the service in the restaurant, but based on the food we had we are anxious to try the in restaurant experience.

Our Sunday tradition and best brunch in town! I recommend the Mac's Hash- a mouth watering combo of sweet potato hash, crawfish, andouille sausage and mirepoix topped with poached eggs. Order one of Ambers famous bloody Marys (if you like them SUPER spicy ask for some ghost pepper vodka) or a MacMosa to wash it down. You also can't go wrong with the oyster basket, alligator Chili, Duck Gumbo or any other menu item. Fantastic patio with misting system for those sweltering summer days. Local brew on tap and just about any televised sporting event on the tvs through out the bar.

Was in Memphis for a week. Overton Square restaurants were recommended by a local. We picked this place. I was very, very disappointed with the décor, the food, and the service. I had Cajun catfish that was slathered with a wet, red spicy Cajun mix and the filet had been a thawed frozen mess. I was awful and I sent it back. There was horrible music playing. We ate at number of places that week and this by far was the worst. From the Flying Eagles MC, Baltimore, MD.

Over the years, I've eaten here many times. However, It moved about a block away three years ago and I had a hard time finding it. It has more room than the other location. It has a good selection of beers and they are served cold. Waitstaff are friendly and attentive. Patrons are friendly and all ages. I especially enjoy the red beans and rice. However, the burgers are good as well. A nice place to go for lunch or dinner.

Went here for the 3rd time since movin to town in June. Has become one of my overall favorite places in town and by far best brunch. Best bloody Mary's in town and I've had um at most places and price is great. $3.00 all day on sat and Sunday, same for mimosas. The Oskar Benedict is amazing too. You're missin out if u don't go check it out

I had a lunch in this establishment. It is a noisy place and not exactly museum-clean. The menu comprises of dishes with Creole/Cajun touches. Muffins in Eggs Pontchantran were soggy. The dish itself was all right. Duck and Sausage Gumbo had a perfect balance of flavours. Beefy duck meat, spicy Andouille sausage and vegetables complemented each other in an intensely rich way. Shrimp and Grits was the most perfectly-prepared Shrimp and Grits I have tasted.

The Bayou is a great place to watch a game! It's also a great Brunch spot. Food wise, I recommend the BLACKENED CHICKEN AND SHRIMP FETTUCCINE! It's spicy, but delicious! I would most definitely recommend The Bayou for fun times and great food! It's a Memphis treasure :)

This place is all kinds of 'hell to the naw.' Good: Their crawfish (or maybe lobster) bisque was excellent. One of the best I've tasted. Bad: raw oysters were extremely gritty and dirty. One has to expect that there will be some grit present but every single one of the dozen were absolutely filthy. I was constantly having to I'll big chunks of shell out of my mouth. At the age of 12 I was taught by my uncle in Savannah, GA how the properly open oysters and at 30 minutes of experience I did a 1000% better job than this place. I don't remember the dishes we had but mediocre at best. Also the AC was dripping water on our table and food. I asked the waiter if we could be moved or if we could move the table and his response "sorry that is Memphis summers for ya'.". Uhhhh I've lived in Memphis all my life and a leaky AC dripping water on my food is not Memphis, it is your laziness. He got ZERO tip which is the 2nd time I have ever done that. If you know what good seafood is do not go here. Honestly the food at captain D's is better. Quite a shame.

I'm not trying to be mean, but I'm really sorry the food was terrible. I grew up around the New Orleans area and that wasn't even close to what I would call Cajun food. The part that really makes me sad is I love bread pudding, and their bread pudding tasted, again I'm sorry, kind of like freezer burnt donuts. Then to top it off our waitress just seemed ready to go home, and didn't won't to be there. She didn't fill my water glass back up until right before we left. It wasn't even that busy. I've been to restaurants that were bursting at the seems with people and had amazing service. So in a nutshell the food and service not at the quality that it should be.

I actually think that the food at Bayou Bar & Grill is much better since the place moved locations and revamped itself. I always loved to socialize at the old Overton Square corner location, but now I actually go to eat too. The new place is much more spacious with a less cramped patio, and a larger bar area. It's really fun to go in groups, but be warned that they are not in any kind of a hurry. The servers are nice and friendly, but I've never had my food served in a real timely manner. I don't get super upset about that kind of thing, but for those of you who do, plan ahead. As far as the food, I love the crab cake sandwich, and the french fries are hot and flavorful. A fun place to eat and drink, the new Bayou has become one of my top restaurant choices in midtown.

Down with all the bad reviews...haven't you people ever been to a bar before? While it's not as cozy as the old location, the new Bayou is a sports watching machine! It has an awesome brunch business on both Saturday and Sunday and some of the best drink prices in town! Try a Bloody Mary at any other place in midtown and get back to me.

Sunday at 2:00pm was very crowded but a pleasant crowd! Our service was very warm and snappy! We started with the bacon wrapped stuffed shrimp (a favorite of ours for quite some time) and we were disappointed to find the sauce had changed slightly. Still very good but not the knock-out tangy mysterious sauce we couldn't get enough of. Our Jambalaya was off the chain! Stuffed with meats and seasoned perfectly, the roux was dark and scrumptious! First time for the Shrimp and Grits which had generous portions of nice sized and well cooked shrimp (not rubbery as you sometimes get in this kind of dish) and the grits were also well cooked however there was just no "Bang". They were just cheesy grits with some under seasoned (except salt, plenty of salt) lacking in onions or peppers for some texture and just kinda blah. Overall wish we had ordered the Catfish Acadia which has always been amazing or perhaps gone with one of the many brunch items! Next time because we will be back!

Some of the best Cajun food in Memphis. I'd put the Po'Boys up against anyone's and the wings are my favorite in the city. The new location is certainly more spacious than the old, but like some other reviewers have mentioned, what it lost in charm it made up for in the consistancy of the food.

My fiancé and I ate here one Saturday night. I was kind of iffy about it considering the mixed reviews. T start, we had the parmesan seafood dip. I knew then that I would return to this place if only for this dip. It is VERY seafood-y with lots of crab and shrimp. My guy ordered the seafood stuffed-bacon wrapped- shrimp with sides of Cajun rice and spinach. I ordered the fried catfish with sides of Cajun rice and black eyed peas. The black eye peas were exceptional, the best I have ever had! The Cajun rice was ok, they should go easy on the cayenne pepper as it was too spicy for even me and I love spicy food. The catfish however, was HORRIBLE! I have never in my life had catfish so terrible. It was super bland, and despite being fried, it was somewhat slimy. If it were not for the seafood dip and the black eye peas, this review would get 1 star and I would never return. My guy's shrimp was good and the spinach was tasty. He too agreed that there was way to much cayenne in the rice. We will be back, but I am not going near that catfish ever again!

Went here often years ago before they moved. I like the bigger place. Service was only mediocre but the gumbo was good and muffaletta was great! The olive spread is different from most I've had as it's got some crunchy texture to it vs just a salty olive spread.

The Bayou is one of the few places in town where you can get good Cajun food. I absolutely love their Jambalaya. The Red Beans and Rice and Po Boys are also worthy of an honorable mention. Like Noah G, I miss the old location and the wonderful dive bar atmosphere it had. But it was small and sometimes it would get just too crowded. The new place, just across the street, is much larger and seats more people. Growth is good. They also have an outdoor deck, so it's a great place to go on a nice evening to enjoy a cold beer and some great spicy food.

  • Stephanie L.

This place has been on the restaurant scene in Memphis for a long time, although the location has changed to across the street from where it started (good to know since the front of the newer location has no sign so it's a little hard to be sure you're going into the right place). The food is good, a little spicier than the descriptions on the menu or provided by our server implied. The setting is average, not bad but nothing special and definitely very casual. The service, however, is their downfall, starting with having to wait more than ten minutes to be greeted by a server and brought menus after self-seating, to waiting with our mouths afire to get drink refills several times after our glasses sat empty for 15 minutes two different times, to having the server disappear when it was time for us to get the bill. With many other restaurant options in the area, I will not be going back to this one.

  • Everette B.

OMG! Why isn't this place rated higher? It's amazing! If you like spicy food of course. EVEN THEIR BURGERS ARE SEASONED! My personal favorite is their Cajun Catfish. Be warned, you better have a good taste for spicy food if your order the Cajun Catfish. I took my girlfriend here on our first date and it was so good she has kept me around since then! Seriously, I'll be coming to this place forever. TRY IT! They have reasonably priced beer and there patio is really nice. Parking spaces are a bit tight *maybe really tight.* So my advice is to drive thru their parking lot and park in the movie theaters parking lot that's right behind their lot. TONS of space. If you love this place after trying it, rate it higher! They should be much higher.

As good as cajun food is gonna get in Memphis. And who wants to complain about a bloody mary with rock salt on the rim, and its only $3 on Sundays! I love the location just close/far enough to downtown.

  • Amanda W.

Good bar food but nothing special. If I was a local I would come here as a regular for the atmosphere, but as a Memphis visitor, I wouldn't seek this out again. For a quick lunch though, this is a good pick. The fried catfish was averagely good and the Cajun meatloaf was missing the pizazz we wanted. I did really enjoy the laid-back atmosphere though.

  • Mike G.

Food lacks consistancy...except their salads. They are the worst salads known to man (and they do that consistantly). I've had good experiences with their rice and beans and their chilli. I'd stick to more those types of dishes if I was to return. Their bar is pretty fantastic however. It's my go to spot if it's a weekday in the summer that I have off and just want to catch a ball game on TV.

Alligator chili nachos...yummm. I had the catfish po boy..it was good. My dad had the soup sampler minus the seafood gumbo and shrimp and crawfish stew because both have crab and he's allergic which our server informed us and even checked for other allergies...loved him!! So my dad got double portions of the duck and sausage gumbo (his fav) and the red beans and rice. He also had the catfish alcadia...which he said was excellent. My boyfriend got the chicken sandwhich it was spicy but had no other flavor, but since he also had the seafood gumbo which he said was amazing he'd still give it a high rating.

Been to bayou several times before and had okay experiences, I was very upset with the service on Monday. Service totally ruined my experience. The waitress was very slow. After having an empty drink for about 10 mins. The waitress informed me that they were having trouble with the soda machine. I told her that was okay, that I would take water. I had half a spicy sandwich left. Instead of getting me a drink. She was talking with other employees and counting her tickets. She didn't come back for another 10 minutes!!! By then I was finished with my sandwich and just wanted to leave. I just bit my tongue. Once looking at the recipe, I was charged $1.75 for the 1- watered down soda during my whole meal. It wouldn't have been an issue if I would have gotten a glass of water. But I didn't, we spent $50 on food and were ignored the whole time. Crappy service has run me off , I doubt I will be returning.

I visited Bayou for a Sunday brunch, intent on getting a bloody mary or four. While it was nothing special as far as bloody marys go, it was cheap. They have great early bird drink specials ($2-3). I went with the classic SHRIMP PO'BOY and it caused me to leave just that...a po'boy. It was not cheap and not very good. Actually I cannot remmeber if it was the shrimp (there are about 8 different po'boys) but that shows how unimpressed I was with the food. Girlfriend got the SHRIMP N GRITS. They were waay to salty and lacked quality ingredients. Seemed more like instant grits and baby shrimp. Overall, this is great to go for more drinking with a side of eating. The patio was great, right on Madison with ample shade from the memphis heat. I think the food is ok but expensive and the drinks are pretty good but cheap....someone got confused.

Nice new redone place with some good grub at a decent price. This is pretty much another fun little hang out spot in Midtown with a nice little patio looking over the area. I had a "PO-boy" shrimp sandwich which was really good, much better than I thought it would be actually. Our waitress was super nice and service was very friendly and accommodation considering our "growing" party kept on growing. I will go again. :-)

I came here over the weekend to celebrate my friends birthday since the weather was too miserable to attend the crawfish festival, and overall had a good experience. The girlfriend and I came a bit late so we didn't have to wait for a table, as our party was already seated, but a server came over right away and took our orders. Everyone got brunch except for me; I was eyeballing the bleu cheese burger with spicy fries. We got our meals and everyone seemed very satisfied with their meals. I thought the burger was alright, but certainly not on the radar for best burger in Memphis. The "spicy" fries also could have had a little more kick to it. The meal was good, but I'd likely order something else The next time I come here (which yes, I'll be back). The price point was very reasonable at this establishment which was a huge plus. They also had televisions to watch the game on. They also didn't rush us out the door which was nice. I'm honestly torn between 3 and 4 stars here, but the burger was simply okay; I look forward to coming back and trying something a little more Cajun the next time I come here!

Every payday Friday, my office pick a place to order food. Today 07/17/02015, we called into this particular restaurant (Bayou bar and grill) and they were not customer friendly. We pulled their menu from online and passed it around to each person ordering, which was about 16 people. We had 4 people that wanted the daily special (Friday- chicken & shrimp fettuccine w/ salad = $6.95) and everyone else ordered other things off the menu. As we ordered from the menu all was well until we got to the (4) daily special orders. We were told by the bartender that we could not order the daily special over the phone, however there was nowhere on the website that says other wise. We asked to speak with manager and he did not want to give the manager the phone, so we ended the call. We then tried back and asked to speak with the manager, while getting manager, we were able to hear the whole conversation between bartender and the so call manager. When the so call manager got on the phone, before we could state what we wanted, she said they could not do it, however we had at least 2 people order the blackened chicken and shrimp fettuccine (full order=$13.95). This does not make any sense, especially when it did not have (daily special=in restaurant only order). We will never order from this place again, due to poor customer service. I do not see how they are going to stay in business. By the way, we are going to spend our $250.00 worth of orders at (soul fish =always friendly and great service (I do not own or work for soul fish)).

If I could give this place no stars, I would. Last week, my coworkers and I went to Bayou to have lunch. This was my first time going, and I was very excited grin the looks of the menu. After we were seated, it took about five minutes for our server to come over and ask us for our beverages. Now this would have been understandable had the restaurant been crowded. However, it was a Tuesday (known as slow days in most restaurants) and there were hardly any tables in there. The server came over with a stank attitude as if my coworkers and I were nuisances. I decided to let it slide, and give him a chance to redeem himself. After he brought our beverages, when asked him for a couple of minutes before we decided what we wanted to order. After we decided, almost 15 min passed when I began looming around the restaurant for him. He was at the bar goofing off with coworkers. He finally left the bar and began cleaning a table beside us, not even acknowledging us. My coworker then waved politely and said, "Excuse me, sir. We're ready to order. .." before he flippantly waved her off and said "I'll be over there in a minute" which immediately angered me. At that moment, I informed my coworkers that I would not be eating there. He then comes up to the table with no greeting, no apology, nothing and just stands and looks at us with disdain. One of my coworkers begins to order, by the other one and myself informed her and him that we would not be eating there. He then walks off and makes an exasperated sound. I see another waitress walking by and politely ask her if there was a manager on duty who I could speak with. She informed me that our server was the bartender/manager as well. I was too through at this point. We left and went down the street to Local instead where we had great service. I looked at this as horrible service from two lenses. 1) as a customer and 2) as having worked as a server myself. From a customer service standpoint, the bartender/manager was unnecessarily rude and very judgemental. Having worked as a server, I know that many servers tend to stereotype patrons based on appearance. I've actually had past coworkers refuse to serve a table because the table's race is black (like us) and they think that they won't tip which is totally untrue. I tip 20% because I know the struggle and know how it is. Not saying that was the case here (and I really hope he was just having a bad day) but I recognized the signs and his attitude from experience. Also, having worked as a server, I would have NEVER treated any customer the way he did. I didn't care what you looked like, or ordered, you would be treated with courtesy and respect the same as anyone else. As a manager, he should know better than that and needless to say, I won't ever be back nor will I ever suggest Bayou for anyone to dine. There are too many nice restaurants in the city than to spend my money on poor service.

The past three times I've gone here, I've gotten consistently good service. Solid choice of beers and some darn good food. 2/3 times that I've gone have just been for drinks, but the other trip to bayou I got their jambalaya, which was too legit to quit. If you're in the area and feeling real Cajun or just want a neat spot to grab a beer, check it out!

Ate here quite a few times, usually with my family. It has a bar atmosphere, so if there's some televised sports event going on, be ready for crowds of people and drunken, disruptive behavior. I have eaten, many times here, the fried catfish plates. They have two to choose from... one has a cream sauce, and the other has a buffalo wing type of sauce. They are both pretty darned good. I usually ordered my sons the seafood sampler appetizer, which includes shrimp, crawfish, and whatnot. They always enjoyed that. I have also eaten, multiple times, their Zydeco Salad, and enjoyed that. Anyway, we always enjoyed this place, and it became our family favorite local place to eat Cajun-style food. We always had a positive experience, never got food poisoning or anything like that. This was our local go-to spot for Cajun food. Now, back in the day, I used to eat at Cafe Roux owned and operated by Chef Cahal at multiple locations around town, which is where I first got familiarized with the "spicy sauce over catfish" concept... however, those disappeared over a decade ago, along with Chef Cahal himself, and aren't relevant to the dining scene in current-day Memphis. All things considered, this place is still on our list of places to eat, if and when we pass through Memphis.

Ordered the mid grill (shrimp, scallops & grouper). All of it was very bland, like it was defrosted, broiled and then seasoned. The spinach and green beans were good and had just the right amount of seasoning. If I go back, I will try the blackened prime rib.

One of my favorite places, and a real anchor to the Overton Square area. It's the best place for Sunday brunch (and football - sound on!) and everything on that menu is great. The steak and eggs is amazing, and the Mac's Hash is so good, if you're really hungry! French Toast is to die for. All the other food is great - crab stuffed shrimp are phenomenal, and the N'awlins sandwich is one of the best sandwiches in Memphis. Get it on the gambino's bread to make it even better (and inhale those fries - your friends will steal them they're so good!). Also the gumbo. Great bartenders and servers, cool clean dive atmosphere, great to watch sports, and amazing food. A real Overton Square treasure!

This place is a Midtown staple. Let me preface this by saying there is nothing wrong with this place. The drinks are good. The staff is wonderful. The food is decent. It's just not my speed. I feel like every time I go in there I'm surrounded by a bunch of people who are older than my parents and/or enjoy smoking quite a lot. If I end up in here after spending an evening in the Square drinking and having fun, it completely kills my jive. Again, there's nothing wrong with the service, drinks, or food. All of these things are wonderful and are the reasons I do end up back in there time and time again, but overall, I just don't enjoy the atmosphere. More the clientele than the bar itself! The staff are fantastic!!!

Great for brunch or lunch. Good Cajun menu, friendly staff and excellent drink selection. Understand people from LA will be skeptical, but give this place a try. You won't be disappointed!

Love love love this place....great people, solid food, and a great setting. Just can't get enough bacon wrapped shrimp and the seafood dip! Not to mention Eric, one of the most excellent bartenders, is a fantastic guy to pour u some drinks and mingle with. Always a great time!

My husband and I ate here last night and received great food and great service! We had the Seafood Parmesan Dip for an appetizer, and Louisiana Stuffed Shrimp and the Jacuzzi (a seafood casserole) for entrees. The black eyed peas that I got as one of my sides were out of this world! If you like Cajun food served with a fun attitude, then this is the place for you!

This definitely isn't one of the best Creole places I've been to. The food isn't bland, it's just not that good. I got the shrimp and crawfish étouffée. The flavour was okay (though there was a layer of oil, kinda gross) but I've had better. Plus, it was 90% vegetables. For $14, I felt kinda ripped off. Not to mention the shrimp were microscopic and still had veins. Gross. The atmosphere was also incredibly lacking. Had you just dropped me in there and had me guess where I was, I would've figured it was a generic bar. I had great service, though. Our waiter was friendly and attentive. It's just a shame it doesn't really make up for everything else. I'd suggest going somewhere else. There's plenty of other places in Memphis that serves Cajun and Creole fare.

Bayou might just have my favorite brunch in Memphis. Plus, let's be honest, I'm always cool with a place that gives you the option of a single, double or jumbo mimosa. If you're an eggs Benedict type, this place is gonna be your jam. I had the Oskar Benedict, which was absolutely amazing. I've also tried their French toast which is delightful, too. The service was great even though they were super busy. If you're wanting Sunday brunch, aim to be there when they open at 11. I left around 12:15 and there was a really long line. Try it out, folks!

Mmmm, ok, the place has a nice atmosphere to it, the patio is great, the service was great the time I was there, but the food (which is way we went there in the first place) was not that great. I had a chipotle shrimp pho boy and I never tasted the chipotle anywhere and I ran out of shrimp before hitting the other half of the bun. I tried the shrimp and crawfish bisque and it was ok ( I've had better in an italian place at ridgeway ave), I also had some of my husbands plate of seafood gumbo but I didn't became a fan either, but I liked the potato fries that came with my pho boy a lot.
