If a Memphian were to suggest Dunkin' Donuts before local doughnut boss Gibson's, it would be considered culinary blasphemy. I feel the same way about Starbucks and Avenue Coffee. The corporate former does not compare to my new neighborhood latter. It's about time Normal Station had a cool spot to relax. Avenue Coffee provides the neighborhood with good coffee, in-house baked goods, and live music on weekend nights. The ambience is warm just like the service. This place should flourish as more patrons support the newest local gem in the 38111.

Cute little shop tucked away in a U of M area neighborhood. Great vibe, and friendly folks behind the counter. They don't serve my favorite area coffee (J. Brooks) but its far better than a cup of sbux or Ugly Mug.

A great place to get work done. Their pourover coffee is freshly made for each order (from locally roasted Reverb coffee beans). There's free wifi, Memphis music, and a great patio. Also they are open until midnight!

Best muffins in town, and the coffee was phenomenal. And you can't beat their prices anywhere. Laid back atmosphere that is very study friendly. Can't recommend it enough

Awesome place to study and hang out! Prices are fair and the baked goods are soooo yummy! The coffee taste very fresh and the staff is super friendly! Highly recommend!

Cool shop with plenty of seating inside along with a couple of tables outside. They sell pottery and jewelry from a local artist. Coffee beans from local roaster. Baked goods made in house from scratch. This place screams local which I love. I sampled 2 of their cookies and cinnamon roll - see pics. Excellent. The gal and gentlemen working earned 5 stars alone - best customer service I've received at any coffee shop in Memphis to date. I recommended they invest in at least one high chair for folks like me and the lady working was very open to my suggestion and didn't take offense.

Came back here after a year away and glad to see it's still going strong. Prices are up and service--outside of the young lady who has infallibly been the heart of this place since it opened--is more lackadaisical. Coffee is still great though and the teas are also excellent, especially their seasonal tea. Still much better than Starbucks and most other coffee places in town though. One thing I didn't like is that there seem to be groups of people who aren't really buying coffee hanging around sometimes. I'm not sure who they are, but they don't seem to be part of the management team and it's a little weird. I'll be back, of course, and hope to see Avenue attract more coffee-lovers from around Memphis.

Great little locally owned coffee shop. These guys really care about the community they are in and donate tips monthly to local causes. Today I had a pour over with coffee from a local roaster (ReVerb Coffee Co). This coffee is pretty awesome, bold, without any bitterness what so ever. The service was quick and friendly. I would highly recommend!

Checked out my standard cappuccino- this was great and measured up well against my absolute favorite in San Francisco

This place was a pretty neat afternoon stop for coffee. When I arrived in Memphis, I was in desperate need of a coffee fix after the drive from Nashville. I pulled out my trusty Yelp app and found Avenue Coffee. When I walked in, my eyes were drawn to the large chalkboard wall and cool decor all around. I definitely enjoyed looking around while my pour over was being made. The coffee was good and floral and did the job for cheap. Good job, there! When I walked in, I was one of two customers and the barista was nice and ended up having conversations with us both. The place seems like it's faith-based which is pretty neat. Also, they have some good-looking sweets. Pros: Good coffee and super interesting decor Cons: I would have preferred not to have been the only person in here. It seems like they could use more of a regular crowd during the weekdays. They have free wifi and good music so I don't know why the local crowd hasn't hit this place up more often. Overall: Came in for a quick coffee fix and ended up getting lost in the decor and looking at their amazing sweets for a bit before getting back on the road. Good spot!

Awesome atmosphere with lots of seating to hang out with friends or get work done (wifi is free FYI)! Drip coffee was one of the best I've had in Memphis! Their blueberry muffin was also pretty good! Overall great experience!

Liked the atmosphere and the people working there. I had a peanut butter cookie with Oreos and it was delicious! However, the coffee wasn't what I expected, it tasted like chocolate, both the latte and the espresso. Maybe it was a chocolate blend? Even so, I didn't really like it.

Great service, quick and friendly. And they're open until midnight! They've recently added hummus and pita from Raffe's, ice cream and a turkey, bacon, apple sandwich. Tea is available by the cup or individual pot. Coffee can be a pour over, aeropress or cold brew as well as a whole collection of espresso drinks and lattes. Every drink is made to order. As a nonprofit, they choose a new charity each month; and 70% of their tips are donated additionally. Worth the visit!

Good, reasonably priced coffee. I always get a soy latte. The inside is adorable. I just wish that some of their baked goods would be vegan.

I really liked this place. It's super divey. But I wish there was a bit more hand-holding. When I asked what they had, they mentioned that they can make just about anything. That's great, but I have no idea what I want. I wish they had a bit more special drinks for me to try rather than an open-coffee-bar style. The barista was super friendly and eager to please. I told her I was craving chocolate and she made me something called Iced Castle with milk with chocolate. I actually disliked it because of the aftertaste, but I still appreciated the fact that she was willing to work with me. Dislike: - Iced Castle with milk with chocolate

OK, I am not going to lie, I have bought a one-way ticket aboard the "ERMAHGERD, Everything Local" bandwagon and I am riding this sucker straight to the moon. So when I discover a hip, new coffee shop within my own flippin' neighborhood, I get way too excited. The Avenue is really cool and, by God, I hope it works. I hear tale that past businesses who have open up shop in that same spot failed within a year of opening their doors... Sad. Regardless, this place is worth a visit and here's why: -Being smack-dab in the middle of a neighborhood, the Avenue is cozy and comfortable within effortless walking/biking distance of many University-area residents. -Live music nights & SUPER SMASH BROTHERS TOURNAMENTS... the world is good and righteous yet, people. -Delicious, melt in your mouth, "Well, there goes my morning workout but who cares?" baked goods that will absolve all the troubles of your life, if but for a precious, fleeting moment. However, a few things I would like to see improvements on: -The prices are not steep, relatively speaking. But they are about equal with Starbuck's and, you know just as well as I do, it just ain't the same without that beautiful siren singing her irresistible songs of over-priced caffeine. -The cleanliness is mediocre, at best. On several visits, I have noticed less responsible patrons' cups and refuse laying about, never to be noticed by the staff. -Speed it up! Drinks take entirely too long to make. All in all, I find the Avenue an interesting place to visit, if not to have a decent iced coffee along an evening walk and I believe, that with improved and more experienced staffing, all my complaints will be answered.

This is my new favorite coffee spot in the city! The atmosphere is hip, welcoming and comfortable. The staff is friendly and very knowledgeable about their products. The iced vanilla latte was really good--not too sweet and the Reverb coffee is really good! I like that they grind the local Memphis roast (Reverb). The only drawback to this place is the location. I feel it is a bit out of the way even if you are in midtown when there are a few more coffee choices. I am sure they get a good college crowd when school is in session. I live in Cordova, so everything is out of the way for me. However, I feel this place is so good that it will continue to do well here and the fan base will grow. It has made a fan out of me over the weekend and a few of my friends already. I will gladly drive a bit out of the way to grab a cup of joe here!

Super nice people!!! The grand opening was on a Friday night and it was so wonderful that I had to go back Saturday night. They had live music both nights. Unfortunately, I have yet to try the coffee but their teas are great!! And yes they have COOKIES!!! Great big fine tasting cookies that will knock your socks off!! It is a must try!!

Love a local coffee shop that has fresh baked goods, almond milk for my coffee and it not ridiculously over priced... Great location, I don't feel like I'm in memphis. Support Local!!

I recently moved into a house down the street from this coffee shop the same day as their grand opening. Founded by a few Mid-South Christian College students/alums, this non-profit coffee shop is the epitome of neighborhood hangout. It's located in a neighborhood just south of University of Memphis, called Normal Station. Nestled between a cottage and a residential street for off-street parking, Avenue Coffee is the go-to walkable place to sip some joe and meet friends after work or for a quick breakfast / break. They have free wifi and are putting up a TV while I type this. There is even a piano and they welcome local artists to play here and look forward to having indie student films showcased here soon. Each month they plan on partnering with a nonprofit to raise awareness and money for them. Not only do I admire it because it's walking distance from my house, but this quintessential need for a neighborhood hangout makes this quaint coffee shop so charming. Chalkboard walls and tables invite conversations with friends beyond 140 characters and I really hope that they stay open for a VERY long time. The pour-over coffee is brewed locally by REVERB coffee and one of the owners' mother is the adorable baker, enticing coffee goers to taste her creations. Last Saturday, she had me try this Orange Cranberry Muffin that was to-die for. Their prices are super fair and their hours are great for late-night coffee goers (Mon.-Sat. 8am - midnight) Don't wanna check this place out on your own? Tweet me @andrewjpg and lets grab a cup of joe.

Nice and friendly faces working there. I'm not too big of a coffee fan so I'm not sure why I went here in the first place (lol) but I really enjoyed the atmosphere and what I got wasn't too bad itself (though it could have used waaaay more caramel.

Great place to study or do work. This is a new shop that just opened. It is roomy, lots of light, several little nooks to get into and study. The patio is beautiful with lots of shade. The coffee is the best in Memphis and the menu is actually simple enough to understand and yet varied enough to try something new. Try the Strawberry Tea - wonderful! I like the Pour Over Coffee - very tasty with no bitter taste or aftertaste. The baked goods are made from scratch and out of this world. My favorite is the Pecan Pie Cookie, but the Lemon Cupcakes are definitely a close second. Best place for coffee near U of M without a doubt.

We were visiting from out of town and decided to try this coffee shop on the basis of the yelp reviews. The service was painfully slow and there was only one person before us. When we finally received our coffees the milk was overheated and the coffee bitter. Another customer waited about 15mins for a decaf and there weren't any other orders up. While I really love the ambience and the set up of this space, you guys need to better train your barista.

Always try to make it here if I'm needing a place to meet somebody for coffee, use the Internet for a while, or just get a great cup of coffee. One of my favorite spots in Memphis.
