We had some time to kill before our tour started at Jack Daniel's, so we walked over to downtown Lynchburg. I love barbecue places, so we stopped in at the Bar-B-Que Caboose. My wife always thought she hated barbecue, but it turns out that she hates barbecue sauce. She got the pulled pork sandwich, without any sauce and really enjoyed it. I also got the pulled pork, but I blessed mine with plenty of sauce. We both left happy. Service was very friendly and amazingly quick. We had plenty of time to enjoy our meal and still make it back to the distillery on time. My only complaint is that it's cash only. They have an ATM in the back, and all the other shops can handle plastic. As far as I'm concerned, there is no excuse for this. It also lowered their review score.

This place doesn't even cook their own BBQ, hence the non BBQ or smoky scent you expect from a true Q joint. Went around back to find no smoker present hmmm kinda weird right? Sub par bought BBQ that is not worth the time. What a joke.

    Best sweet tea for sure

Great, quick food! The service was excellent, too. I loved the pulled pork sandwich and the live music show was wonderful too!

Stopped here after doing the Jack Daniels tour. Needed to grab something to eat before the 90 minute drive back to Nashville. Was able to sit anywhere we wanted on this given Saturday. There was some live music being played when we walked in - not the best musicians - looked like guys just jamming. The first impression of the place was one of an old time place - not alot of decor with the exception of country music pictures and a train running overhead. Menu is pretty standard though expected a bit more BBQ. I got the pulled pork platter which I had with cole slaw and red beans and rice. The red beans and rice were the star on my plate. The pulled pork was definitely out of a gas smoker as I could pick up the propane taste in the pork. An untrained palette probably wouldn't but being a smoker myself I could. The cole slaw was definitely above average. The owner was one of the most genuine guys I met. He was very nice to my nephew who is in the service and had an interesting conversation following that about his family's history in the service. Would I make a special trip? No If I was in the area, would I stop? Sure.

I thought the pulled pork was good! The beans and potato salad too! I'm pretty sure they smoke the pork on site because you can taste the hickory. Yeah it's hokey, but that's not hard to gather from the outside. A trip to a place like Lynchburg is what you make of it. Oh, and bring cash!

I went there after touring the Jack Daniels distillery at the recommendation of a gentleman at the distillery. I spent $12 the waitress was excellent gave her a $5 tip the barbecue was reasonably good I ordered a BBQ baked potato with pulled pork on it they offered bacon bits on the menu... Which turned out to be fake soy bacon bits they were absolutely disgusting and totally ruin the flavor of the pork. it really makes no sense to me why people would ruin their bbq over a tablespoon of bacon bits that were real good quality food is really not more expensive when the client comes back I spoke to the owner he doesn't even care. not only will I not go back I wouldn't recommend you bother. In all fairness they did bring me another potato without the bacon bits on them but the beans that they call homemade or not really they're kind of semi homemade. they didn't taste terrible but they were nothing to brag about on a positive note they did have decent sweet iced tea which I found in the South hit or miss.

We ducked in here after the Jack Daniels distillery tour because it was raining and we were hungry. We were allowed to sit anywhere, so we sat in the booth which is actually the VIP section when a band/performer has guests, so we made sure we clapped for the featured singer. Staff was nice and we enjoyed talking to them. I had the pulled pork, but I noticed the red beans and rice has a kick to it. All good and reasonably priced. Also, if you "like" them on Facebook, you get a free beer cozy.

If you go on the Jack Daniels Tour, you end up coming here because there are few other options and every tourist seems to come here because it's the in thing to do. This place has a friendly and inviting atmosphere and good sweet tea, but the BBQ is sub par. It's below average, even for tourist food. Still, it's not a bad option because the price is so cheap, so if you're bringing a family by you can get in and out quickly and spend a nominal amount. Just don't expect to be impressed, at least not if you're from the South.

Nice little barbecue shack. If this was up here in the north, it would probably get four stars, but hey, this is the south, and the bonus points you get for being authentic is more of an ante. That being said, the barbecue is solidly good and the sauces are tasty. A unique offering is their loaded baked potato filled with beans and pulled pork. Super hearty and filling, but great. Service is friendly and the place is, well a barbecue place. So there is a lot of mis-matched chairs and tables and lots of random stuff on the walls. All that you would want from a proper barbecue restaurant. Note: cash only - there is an ATM on-site.

Needs a manager who can train the waitstaff to pick up food while hot and not to run around in circles without knowing what to do next. My pizza came on a cardboard circle, all of our food was cold. At one point the cook came out and begged the waitresses to pick up their food. There was a huge pile of cooked food just sitting there. With a little management it could be a nice place.

Went here after the Jack Daniels Distillery tour, it was delicious! I had the pull pork was tender and put together with the BBQ was superb. On the other hand my uncle did have the jambalaya and it does need to have some work, being from NJ I expected more from the south when it comes to jambalaya. The staff was extremely nice and I enjoyed the nice touch of having a man play some live music for enterainment.

Had the pulled pork sandwich with baked beans. The meat was flavorful with no need for the provided sauce choice. The beans were not baked; they were pork and beans heated up (tasted like canned). For dessert, I had the bread pudding. This is my favorite dessert, so I always have high expectations. The consistency was pleasant and the spice mix decent, but it was swimming in an overly sweet sauce that ruined the dish for me. Not a bad deal for the price, but with few options in the square, it is the best you can do

With about 45 minutes to kill before the Jack Daniels tour, my brother and I visited the Lynchburg town square for a quick lunch. I consulted my trusty Yelp app and we decided on the BBQ Caboose Cafe. We ordered the BBQ pizza which came with plenty of gooey cheese, pulled pork and sweet BBQ sauce. We really liked it. Lots of interesting stuff hanging on the walls to keep your brain occupied while waiting for your food. Bring cash. No credit cards accepted.

wow! I hate to write bad reviews but this place was sub par. I just wanted a quick bite and this place was handy. I was not greeted when I came in- just stared at by the only server. The BBQ sandwich was just meat on a cold bun and I received the added bonus of a rock or bone fragment with it! I mentioned it as I paid the check and all that was said to me was that no one else had ever complained about that before. Yea for me! My sandwich was not very good and pricy for what it was but as a tourist spot I understand that. What I cannot understand is the unfriendly attitude- do they just assume you aren't coming back so there is no reason to be nice?

Not a good place for a tourist in the area, but perhaps the locals like it. There are two items related to BBQ on the menu: pulled pork and bbq chicken. Umm, where's the stew, baked beans, ribs, and brisket? Oh, those must have been replaced by the pizza, red beans and rice, and chips. I just don't understand how the Caboose Cafe can have the word Bar-B-Que in their name with the little amount of actual bbq on the menu. It's a family-style seating arrangement, so be prepared to sit next to strangers. I'm personally not a fan, but some people like it. The service when I went was slow, but then again, it was full of tourists.

A few years ago, I went here with my dad after touring Jack Daniels. I remember walking around the square and we thought this place looked good. I've always like trains, so I'm sure that had something to do with it. I don't honestly remember too much about the food. However, I'm sure that if it had been horrible, I would remember. So, I feel "safe" giving this place 4 stars. From what I do remember, we enjoyed our meal and didn't leave hungry. We both ordered the pulled pork bbq. This place would be good if you have kids. The decor is busy, so there wouldn't be a lot for them to look at while you are dining.

I had the pulled pork plate and my wife had the BBQ chicken plate. Food was ok, nothing special. Enjoyed the red beans and rice on the side.. The service was pretty poor probably due to the young age of the waitresses. We continually had to ask for refills even thought the place wasn't that busy. Loved the atmosphere and look of the place. Be sure to bring cash as they do not take credit/debit cards.

Typical of a tourist-centric place. Good food, but expensive for what you get, with spotty service (due to the crowds and the flighty teenager waitress). BBQ sauce was surprising good, and complimented the pork rather than overwhelmed it. I tried both their sweet-mild and hotter sauce. Both were worthwhile to sample.

  • Nick G.

Decent Pulled Pork place, we ordered a Pulled Pork plate, with which I quickly made a pulled pork sandwich. There was a generous portion of pulled pork left after that, and coleslaw too. I tried the two BBQ sauces (hot and normal), and they were both decent, nothing much to talk about. The regular one was more rich in flavor, but I stuck with hot because I like to have a bit of a kick (and there wasn't much of a kick at all in theirs). We also ordered a chicken plate, and didn't enjoy it nearly as much since the meat was kinda dry and chickens just not as much fun. For sides we chose coleslaw, and their "New Orleans" beans and rice. I thought the sides were pretty tasty, though the plates were all pretty messy, and sloppily (is that a word) put together. Last but not least, we ordered sweet tea, and I found it very yum and refreshing. It was a great meal to follow the Jack Daniels tour in Lynchburg, and on that note, don't forget to try the Jack Daniels flavored fudge and ice cream, both are excellent and taste great after some BBQ! Oh, and no credit cards accepted here, check or cash only.

Have to say Was very disappointed in this place. Being in Lynchburg you would just think they would have a great BBQ. The pulled pork sandwich was ok as for flavor, but nothing to write home about, A very small sandwich and it came with Lays chips for I think It was around $6 or so. Not worth it. The sweet tea wasnt bad but I only had 1 glass, The waitress was to busy sitting on her butt and playing with her phone. No tip for you. The decor was cool but not worth going back

They are the only restaurant of this type on the square and could not care less about the quality of the food they serve, it seems!

After the JD tour we were starving and the BF wanted some pulled pork so we decided to stop here and check it out. It was an off time of day so we could sit wherever we wanted. You can sit at the long tables in the middle or there's plenty of seating for 2 and 4 people around the perimeter, so I wouldn't say it is really family style seating technically. The place had the red checkered tablecloths, a train running overhead, lots of kitschy stuff on the walls and bookshelves, etc. Totally a small town touristy type of place. Note the sign that says NO CREDIT CARDS, ATM IN BACK because you will need to know that if you are like me and do not carry cash around ever. Peruse the menu and you will be a bit confused. So I can get pulled pork bbq plate or sandwich, pizza, or jambalaya? Strange but in a small town I think they probably have to cater to the entire place. But who doesn't like pulled pork? Come on! No ribs which is a bit of a travesty. As another reviewer said, no brisket, but we aren't in TX and we don't do brisket often down here in TN sooooo don't come here looking for it. Anyway, we got some pulled pork with chips and slaw. Not great BBQ but seriously not that bad either. The hot sauce set this sandwich off though! Finally, a sauce that is a BBQ sauce, thicker in consistency, with sweet but also with actual HEAT. Done! We bought 2 bottles of this because it was good. In actuality, the sauce is what brought this bad boy up from 3 to 4 stars. Yum! The other reason 4 stars - um, something was up with their fountain soda machine. And by that I mean it was so awesome! You know, when you get a fountain diet Coke and it is SO fizzy and SO cold and has that great BITE that you suck the entire thing down in 5 seconds because it is THAT refreshing? When you find a fountain like that you get refills multiple times over. Gah it was greatness! Overall not a bad place, especially if you want to fly by the seat of your pants and don't want to make a reservation at Miss Mary Bobo's. Give it a try when you are down there.

Stopped here for a quick bite after visiting the distillery. We just had a pulled pork sandwich and it was pretty good. The bbq sauce was very good; wish I would have taken some home with me. Next time I'm in town, I'll swing by and try something else. Well worth the stop if you have a couple extra minutes.

Went in sat in a booth menus just basicly thrown at us so she could hurry to the only customer( besides us) at the register. I found it rather rude wasn't going to deal with attitude as I am vacation. So we went to other BBQ restaurant down the lil alley from the square. They had great service...

This place is really not a BBQ spot, especially for the Southeast. They have pulled pork (either on a sandwich or as a plate) and some bbq chicken. Other than that, this is more of a typical lunch spot where you can get some sandwiches and a hot dog. There is also a strange bit of Cajun food in the form of red beans and rice and other Cajun favorites. Didn't get a chance to eat here because of slow service. We waited 15-20 mins. and didn't even get a drink order in. I wouldn't come back because I saw some food come out and it didn't look that great. You'll also be crammed in to this small spot. It actually says on the menu "if you didn't have a good time here, it wasn't our fault", but I have to disagree with that. Really cheesy place for tourists that didn't deliver, literally.

A fun little lunch place that's a stone's throw away from the Jack Daniel's Distillery. Easy to get a table, very fast service, and a constant revolving door of live music (albeit mostly Johnny Cash covers). My pulled pork was tasty, the regular BBQ sauce was good, and the coleslaw was yummy. Nothing was bad, and nothing was outstanding, it was simply a nice place to stop for a bite after the JDD walking tour. As a side-note, the menu is very small, you've basically got a few sandwiches, some pulled pork, and pizza to choose from. Everyone in town was saying that Miss Mary Bobo's was the place to go, but we had a nice meal here and would definitely go back. Also, quite affordable, with no meals over $10 that I noticed on the menu.

Food was blah and the place was really dirty. Our waitress was very nice and attentive though. I would not go back again.

Great pulled pork and a nice atmosphere. Quick and friendly service. A nice place to stop after the JD tour. The chicken was just ok, but the baked beans, slaw, and white bread and butter were great. The Cajun red beans and rice weren't Cajun but different and pretty good. Socialists Beware- they had the Tea Party Anthem on repeat:)

We enjoyed having lunch here after touring the Jack Daniel's Distillery. We met the owner & his wife, and heard the last big of the band which was playing. The food was good and inexpensive. $5 for a sandwich, and $8 for a dinner plate with three sides. I would recommend stopping by here if your in Lynchburg, TN.

Stopped by for some BBQ after our Jack Daniels distillery tour. We ate the rice and beans which were yummy and a little spicy. Also a hotdog :) we were two people and paid $10 total. A steal for the country BBQ food we ate. Enjoyed it. Also don't miss the jack daniels shop where there is many things to buy for souvenirs.

After touring Jack Daniels Distillery, we drove a few blocks to the town square of Lynchburg. We stopped at this restaurant for a lunch...3 adults and a child. 2 adults split the BBQ dinner $9.99, the other adult had a bowl of red beans, and the child ate of off our BBQ plate. We all had a glass of sweet tea. The food was mediocre. The tea was meh...The bill, however, was outstanding. The charge was $27.97. Be ware all tourists. Go somewhere else, unless you are predisposed to spending a lot of $$ for very little portions of underwhelming food. Never again for us!!

Wow, do I hate myself for not reading the Yelp reviews before coming in? Yes. I guess I can only blame T-mobile for not giving me the service necessary for a quick search. This place should've been our savior after a cold and rainy Jack D's tour. Sadly, we left in a worse mood! We ordered the bbq pizza and the lackluster four-rib plate. I ordered the pizza thinking it would be similar to other delicious bbq pizzas I've had in the past, but there I went assuming again! No other toppings but cheese, pork and sauce. Yawn! The servers were confused about who should take our table and then forgot what we ordered to drink. We felt like the "best I ever had" slogan on the walls was comical, as there's nothing special about this place other than the fact that it's located in the hometown of the Jack Daniel's distillery. I hate writing bad reviews, but as a public service announcement, go elsewhere. Please!

Had a large delicious plate of jambalaya--I was in heaven. It was gooooooood spicy jambalaya. Otherwise, the waitress was nice enough to serve us even though we were being ignorant "out of towners" and coming in 10 minutes until closing. We got held up by the Jack Daniels tour and of course we had to go get souvenirs. Since, by that time, the little town looked like everything was closing, we decided to stop in. Our waitress was kind, quick, and efficient considering she was getting ready to close up shop. Boyfriend had the BBQ Pulled Pork. I got to try a bite and it was really good. Probably the best BBQ Pork I've had in a while. Overall, this place was really cute. The ambiance was super casual and definitely a southern looking joint. Loved the relaxed feel of it all. AND was so happy they decided to serve us even though they were about to close. :)

We ate after our Jack tour. The place isn't anything fancy. Paper plates and cups and plastic utensils; but that didn't matter because the food was delicious. Can honestly say the ribs were better than I've had in Memphis. Real butter for your white bread. Baked beans were tasty. My husband said the potato salad was good. Just cannot say enough about the ribs. Lots of flavor and very tender. We plan to do another tour and will probably come back and get these ribs. They were great.

This was a neat little place. The food was okay I have definitely had better. I also think the prices for the area were a little steep for what it was. I would choose a different restaurant next time I go. I should have done a better YELP view before I went.

THE FOOD MADE ME AND MY SON SICK. We both got a type of food poison and spent the whole day in the bathroom and in bed. If you were here on 11/25/14 and also got sick, please reach out to me. Overall the food is terrible, everything the sell, you can tell was not fresh or prepared there. All probably bought at the grocery store. Like other reviewer wrote, "this place is a typical tourist trap". Food is really expensive for what it delivers, and the false advertisement "the best ribs I ate"....So misleading... Plastic plates, plastic silverware...The taste of the BBQ was horrible. If you think that this food is good, you never experienced any good food in your life and should be pretty sad about that. We ended up staying as we were too nice to leave. I will never do that, in the future, I will step into a place that I do not like, I will stand up and leave. Do not go to this place, you may get sick.
