Excellent. Ive been there 5 or 6 times. Ordered both the usual and the unusual and never let down. Much better than Ming Tree or China Pearl but smaller and more personal. Chicken and beef is higher quality than more expensive counterparts.

I order lunch delivery. Delivery took about 45minutes but my food was piping hot! I got veggie lo mein, orange chicken, and spring rolls. All yummy. However, the "orange" chicken wasn't orangy. If you know what I mean by that. It tasted exactly like General tso with orange slices added. I'd stick with the General or Sesame chicken. All around good Chinese take-out. But don't get me wrong it's not PF Changs. lol but I will defiantly be ordering delivery again.

We really enjoyed all the wrong orders that were delivered to our house an hour and a half after we ordered!!! I really want to give this place more stars because the food WAS pretty good. However, everything else was pretty bad. There was too much of a language barrier for us to be successful ordering... The lady taking our order got pretty much every single one of our orders incorrect and had the delivery driver riding around ALL of Knoxville to get us our food. They have yet to correct the charge on our card, but we'll see how that goes. THAT BEING SAID, The mixed vegetables I didn't order were perfectly cooked and the sauce was tasty - the chicken we didn't order was close enough to what we wanted and good but just a tiny bit overdone. The cream cheese rangoon we DID order was the perfectly fried. It could have MAYBE used a little more cream cheese, but I probably didn't need that anyway! All in all, I'm up for trying this place again. Next time I'll probably go in and get the stuff myself though!

Get the soups, and soups only, and get them to go, even if you're not close to home. That is a 5 star experience here. The soups are the best in town somehow! Made the mistake of dining in once and the couple with 4 screaming children in the next table over just made the already tiny dining room that much more miserable. It has fluorescent lighting in the dining area like a school cafeteria, so zero ambiance. Our main dishes were standard for Knoxville, which means either vaguely or strongly disappointing. But the soups!! Those are worth a drive there and then eating them in your car.

Worth a try. I LOVE American Chinese and often tire of over priced Asian Fusion. Every order is prepared so it may take 15 minutes to be served. The ambiance is plain but I find the food very good. And the prices are terrific for the freshness and quality.

Got sesame chicken with fried rice and egg roll. We also got lo mein and general tso's chicken, with the same, and we were all a little nonplussed. The meal was mediocre at best. They had it ready quickly, which was great. But when we opened up our meal, the chicken was fried poorly, so that it was crunchy in a somewhat unpleasant way, and the sauce was decent, but nothing special. The fried rice was bland. It didn't have vegetables in it, which might be forgiven if it was flavorful, but it was not. More butter or oil or soy sauce or SOMETHING was wanted, and not found. Still looking for a decent takeout in Knoxville. The search continues.

This is the kind of place where what you order will either make or break your experience. I've had some dishes that were very good and others that were awful. The teriyaki chicken was flavorless, dry, and unchewable. Tried the egg foo young on one occasion and it was a similarly bad experience. But the pan fried dumplings had great texture, delicious filling, and a sweet soy sauce for dipping. The hot and sour soup is good. The tangerine beef is my go-to dish. The service has been fine. Not standout but not horrible in my experience. Delivery can be a little slow but I've never had a problem with my order being incorrect or cold.

Food is good. We have ordered from here many times and went to order from here tonight. Well, low and behold they have raised their prices 10-20%!!!! My normal Chinese meal went from roughly $35 to now over $44!!!! I can get takeout from a real Chinese place for these prices! Sorry, they are pricing themselves out of the market.

Not very good quality. Typical, cheap Chinese food. If your wanting real quality Asian food, I would pick somewhere else. I stopped ordering from here after I got sick from eating their chicken.

I am an avid lover of chinese food, and the fact they deliver makes them more attainable than anyone else in the area. I have three small kids, and pizza gets old after awhile, so I have been ordering from Zhu Garden for the past 3 years+. Oddly, I have NEVER eaten in their restaurant, nor have I ever even thought of doing so, so I have very little input on the cleanliness or atmosphere, however I am a consistent "to-go" orderer, so I am quite familiar with their process. The online ordering tool is a HUGE life saver, because I cannot say how many times communication was lost and orders were incorrect over misunderstandings.... My only complaint is how long they take to deliver- Most of the time I have to call after an hour and "check on things" to see how they are moving along, and I always get the same response "they are on their way". Well, I live about 5 miles from the place, so I can pretty much bet it's after I call that they get in their car and leave, however I have never once had a complaint about the food so if it means they are taking "longer" to prepare than I would like, so be it. It's worth it in the end!

I have lived in Knoxville for 12 years, worked in a Thai restaurant for 8, and this is by far the most disgusting Thai I have ever had in my life. I got basil roll and the lettuce was MOLDY. Not to mention, Basil rolls usually come with a ginger peanut sauce, they serve it with spring roll sauce. The owners are most certainly not Thai and know nothing about Thai cuisine. The shrimp in my entree were small and there were very few. For the price this place is totally not worth it, and of you like Thai food stay as far away from their Thai menu as you possibly can.

The general tsu tofu is excellent. The service has always been good and they are always very willing to fix a dish to your specs. And the price is great!!

Live in the area and it is great. From NYC and miss a good sesame chicken plate. Could never find one in the south that wasn't over or undercooked or even had sesame. This place has the best sesame chicken in town and all around. Thai tea rocks too.

I believe that Taste of Thai's food has gotten more bland over the past couple of years. Thus, it has been necessary for me to find a new Thai place. Zhu Garden is certainly not bad food, but did nothing to impress me. Zhu Garden received a 2 instead of a 3 because I inquired into how spicy there food was, which I was told very. However, I asked to have my food made even spicier than they typically would, but my dish was not spicy at all. I will continue trying to find something better to eat in Knoxville.

So I'm updating my review not to change anything, but to make a pretty simple observation. The owners, as far as I understand, are Malay. So why would you order Americanized Chinese food when you have the option for Thai (which is closer to what they cook)? Yes, it's going to be more Malay style Thai but it's still tasty. As far as pho? Why would you go somewhere that advertises as Chinese-Thai and get a VIETNAMESE dish? Do I go to Burger King and order pizza and expect it to be good? And if you don't like that they choose a different sauce for their item than what you believe is the only sauce allowed?...Get off your high horse and realize that it is food, and if you don't like it, then you don't have to eat it; it doesn't automatically make the cook wrong Anytime my order has ever been wrong, it's been corrected, and I've been treated exceptionally well afterwards. This is mostly a takeout place, but I'll relax there and get all the food I can stand and then leave with the leftovers and a wonderful Thai iced tea to cool it all down. Still love my drunken noodles, my soup (Thai style hot and sour), potstickers (which as others have said, are truly amazing), and egg rolls. Always love the people, and I'll always be back.

It's 9:35 PM and I am starving! Looks like they close at 10:00 ... I'll just check to see if it's too late to order for delivery. What do you know, my order will arrive in 45 minutes, I am so happy I can get food this late in the evening. I will see what every one is raving about very soon. Thanks for the reviews all.

Definitely our go-to place when looking for Chinese food in Knoxville. We travel about 20-30 minutes (one way) in order to get food from here because it's the best in the area. And even though we always get it to go, the food is still delicious when we are chowing down at home. We like to change it up every so often but we always order the chicken lo mein and the egg rolls. Staff is friendly. Food is yummy. Service is fast.

Zhu is our favorite place for Chinese food in Knoxville. We travel 45 miles (one-way) to eat here about once a week. The place is super busy, mostly with take-out/delivery orders. The staff is extremely friendly. It's a family owned joint and they take pride in their food. If you want it extra hot, just let them know - they're happy to turn up the heat. Our favorite dish is Drunken Noodles with Chicken - 2-3 times Thai hot. Yummy!

  • Salmaan T.

Really more like 3.5 but I like to round up. Got the penang and lo mein noodles. It was for carryout but the food was ready when they said it would be ready. The penang curry was spiced perfectly without taking away from the taste. The lo mein was typical, but tasty with a decent amount of chicken and veggies. Will probably come back.

This place has terrible pho and curry. I knew I should have been concerned when the lady asked how spicy I wanted it...... You handle that for pho!!! Siracha is on the table!! We dined in and the food was so bad we made up an excuse about having to get to a meeting and had them wrap everything up so we could properly dispose of it! Maybe the chinese food is good but yikes stay away from the pho!!!!!

I'm new in the area, and live just up the road from Zhu Garden. I was curious about if I had a gem setting right in my back yard, and checked Yelp for reviews. After seeing so many positive reviews, I went to check it out. I ordered the General Tso's Chicken dinner special, which came with rice and an egg roll. I went to pick it up since it wasn't far, and the restaurant itself was small but pleasant. The cashier was friendly when she rang me up, and I was back at my apartment in absolutely no time at all. It only took ten minutes to get my order ready after I called! Overall, I'm more than happy with the food that I got. The egg roll was pretty standard fare, but there was a little bit of zing to the meat in it. The chicken was the best General Tso's I've ever had; perfectly spicy, perfect amount of sauce, and the chicken pieces were bite sized. I hate ordering take-out Chinese and getting a few pieces about the size of my fist that I have to gnaw on or dig out a knife to eat. The only reason I didn't give them five stars is because it's my first experience eating there and the rice was kind of tasteless. I loaded it up with soy sauce and shrimp sauce (another plus! they'll give you a huge container of it for a buck) and it was passable, but I could probably do without it. If I could, I'd give them 4.75 stars. I will definitely be eating there a lot in the future!

I arrived at this place not knowing what to expect, except for one thing. I knew that the guy who runs this place makes his own dumplings (aka pot stickers), which I LOVE! The parking lot is a mess around this area so you can easily find yourself in a maze on how to get there and where to park when there are not many spots. I walked into this place and the decor was somewhat generic. It is totally a hole in the wall. Since there are only about 6 tables you should plan accordingly and not get your hopes up if they are busy. I started off with the Oolang Tea, which was quite good and definitely warmed me up since it was cold outside. As I browsed over the menu I noticed it was an extremely large menu covering dishes from the vast region of the Continent of Asia. I ordered the Pan Fried Dumplings, aka Pot Stickers and there were 6 to an order. They were really quite good. Next time I will try and share them with someone else so I will enjoy my meal. Next I ordered the Hot and Sour Soup. I FINALLY found a place where I LOVED the Hot and Sour Soup. I didn't try the egg roll but I was told it was good. Next up was the Green Curry with Tofu and my friend ordered the Sweet and Sour Chicken. The Green Curry was truly amazing! I have not had Green Curry as good as this one in years. If you like curry dishes then you must try it here! I am very picky about tofu in any dish and here is was cooked to perfection, tender but not crumbly. You should listen to Janelle P. and I when we say, THE GREEN CURRY ROCKS! Once you are done with your meal you go up to the cash register and pay. I noticed while I was there they do a very large take-out business and they also deliver. That's a major plus! PS The prices are pretty cheap. Good for the diners, right? You should definitely check this place out and try some dumplings, green curry, and hot and sour soup while sipping on Oolong Tea. I guarantee the Curry will be worth it! I am a huge fan of Chicken Chow Mein so next time I will probably try it out! Cheers and Enjoy!

Guys who work here are super friendly, and it helps since I know a couple of them from years back at other restaurants. Either way it's always welcoming inside and usually pretty quite unless there's a group inside. The food is prepared quick and for the price it's great (esp lunch deals). I definitely recommend their drunken noodles, it's my favorite thing, though I can't say I've tried much else lol

Nom-Nom! ^__^ I talked some friends into coming here after reading the great reviews and we were not disappointed! Everything we had, which was a lot, was amazing! Zhu Garden has two menus; Chinese and Thai. We had a little from both. Chinese: They have classic soups, (hot and sour, wonton, egg drop etc.) and appetizers (egg roll and veggie spring roll, Crab Rangoon, dumplings, spare ribs etc.), fried rice, lo meins, mei funs, chow meins, chop sueys, egg foo young, and moo shus. They also have a Chef Specials area with items such as General Tso's shrimp and Crispy Scallops. Off the Chinese Menu we ordered Crab Rangoon, veggie spring rolls, hot and sour soup, and General Tso's shrimp. The Crab Rangoon was pretty typical but definitely fresh and homemade. It was served with that cherry-red kind of sweet and sour sauce and was quite good. The spring rolls were wonderful. They smelled and tasted very fresh and they were bigger than most spring rolls. The General Tso's shrimp was a real treat. Being pescetarian, it is difficult to find anything I can consume that has been General Tso'ed. The shrimp tasted fresh and had been un-poop-veined which I really appreciate. My friend who had the hot and sour soup liked it a lot. I did not partake because of the pork (o"o) Thai: I had the Pad Thai with tofu and my friend had the Green Curry with tofu which had been raved about in janelle w.'s review of Zhu Garden. Both dishes were spot-on. The Pad Thai was just how I like it; nice thin rice noodles that are cooked almost to a crisp, a savory slightly sweet sauce, crispy bean sprouts, chewy egg, peanuts, and perfectly cooked tofu which had, as I like to say, "a chaw to it!" Oh and it's served very (temperature) hot! The Green Curry was also very tasty. The flavor was nice and comforting. It was just the way curry should be. The only downside to this restaurant was the drinks. I always have unsweetened tea with every meal. I cannot confirm, but it tasted like it was made from unfiltered tap water. They have soda, but it is served in 20oz bottles, so no free refills. Since we were the only customers dining in the restaurant, this probably isn't too much of a problem. In fact, the place only has about 6 tables. (It's one of those strip-mall places by a Shono's Japanese Grill and Corner Pizzeria.) They were doing a killer delivery and take-out business. The phone rang a lot while we were there and there was a ton of food flying out of the door. The staff was very welcoming but very busy. I was very glad to see that though because it means, hopefully, they will be here for a long time. ^__^

Another Andy P. follower here. His review pointed us toward Zhu Garden and we've probably eaten there at least two dozen times now - sometimes more than once a week. The owners are great people and very friendly. Food is wonderful. It's the kind of Chinese place you dream about. Their Thai offerings put Taste of Thai to shame. Granted, it's in a strip mall. You wouldn't want to bring your finacee here to propose. And you're hopefully not too embarassed to park in front of a trashy lingerie store to pick up a bite to eat. All these shortcomings are forgotten as soon as you sit down to your giant bowl of Pho, savory Pad Thai, or deliciously fresh Bangkok rolls. One of the singularly best lunch specials in town. Many lunch combos for about five bucks. And when you bite into the chicken - suprise! - it's real chicken. Try getting that at Hardee's for five bucks. Conservatives will feel right at home here - for some reason, Fox News is always on the TV. If you're not into that, face the counter.

Typical, American-ized Chinese food (heavy, greasy, saucy), but good for its kind. The dumplings were clearly homemade and a very nice addition.

Thanks for these reviews, they match up to our experience. Food is great for this genre of Chinese/Thai take-out in middle America. Friendly staff, helpful and honest. We has a problem with our credit card due to recent usage at multiple gas stations, and we ended up paying our 15 dollar bill with cash. She wanted to make certain that we understood that our card would not be charged. She was super nice. Location is easy to find off the highway and parking was easy. Large serving sizes with great use of flavorings and spices. No brown rice, but white rice and fried rice was tasty.

This place is great. Not what you would expect from just any Chinese restaurant in Knoxville. It has more of a made with love touch than the others do. A bit pricier than other places but well worth it. Their lunch menu offers a great selection at really good prices. The menu offers a Thai/Chinese selection which is a nice combination. I really like this place and now remains as one of my favorites.

We stopped at this restaurant on our way home from Kentucky. This looks your typical 'fast-food Chinese' restaurant and it seems like they focus mainly on delivery or pick-up as the dining area was extremely small. We were there around 6:30 and they seemed extremely busy. Several people who were waiting for their orders had waited for so long that they actually left. We had to wait quit a while for our food as well. They seemed to move all their delivery orders up in priority so those who were dining in had to wait until there were absolutely no more delivery orders or phone orders. We ordered the Bangkok roll as an appetizer. Seemed a little pricey at $6.25 as it was mostly cabbage, but the peanut sauce was extremely tasty. We ordered the Spicy Noodles and Curry Basil Noodles. When the meals finally arrived, we noticed the noodles were pretty angel hair pasta. I ordered the spicy noodles as extra spicy (thai hot) and there was absolutely no spice to the dish. It was tasty, it just wasn't spicy at all. The curry basil noodle dish was pretty bland. Both dishes were very short on mushrooms, bean sprouts, etc. It's almost like you paid for just noodles and meat. We were not impressed and we will make sure we won't be stopping here again next time we travel to or from Kentucky.

I've eaten from both their Thai and Chinese menus and have loved everything that I've tried. Their hot and sour soup is the best I've had (if anyone has had better I'd love to hear about it, good hot & sour soup is hard to find). Their curries each have a unique flavor and I think I've tried them all by now, my favorite being the Siam curry. The place is small with only a handful of table but I think most of their business is takeout. Glad to hear that they have delivery but haven't tried that myself. Not many restaurants deliver so it's nice to have that option available. Definitely give them a visit if you are in the area!

I eat here pretty regularly; both dine in and delivery. The food is nearly ALWAYS excellent. Every once in a while, they have a lackluster day, but it's still better than anything else in the area. It's about the only place I've eaten that makes their spicy food hot enough to literally make me sweat all over. Mind you, you have to ASK for it "extra Thai hot" but trust me, they do NOT mess around if you want it spicy. Both their Thai and Chinese menus are quite good from what my friends I bring here tell me. I personally just stick to the General Tsao's chicken.

The food is alright *if* you get it. Just now and last night me and some friends ordered from here and they forgot the rangoons last time and my rice today. Not only that but they never said or had it written on the menu that they charge a surcharge for delivery even if you order the minimum amount. The sweet and sour chicken was ok, 4.5 out of 10. Triple delight 6.5 out of ten. Rangoons 8. Service needs to step it up a notch.

Just got back from Iraq for a little R&R and this is the first place I ate out. Great - just like it was five months ago when I was here last!

I enjoyed the Sesame Chicken (almost completely chicken and rice only 2 pieces of broccoli), Sweet and sour chicken (gave me enough sweet@sour to drown 2-4 orders), and the Thai sesame chicken (without looking at a menu I'm not sure if that is the proper name but it was like sesame chicken with peanut taste blended in). Everyone I know who likes egg rolls says they like the ones from Zhu garden though vegetarians would need to beware that their egg rolls have meat in them. I've had coworkers complain that some dishes have mostly vegetables and almost no meat and other dishes are mostly meat with almost no vegetables. I haven't seen the dish they serve that balances the two. The one dish I've had there that I didn't like was the chicken fried rice. The quality of the dish was good but it was of a different style than I expected. It had more vegetables in it and wasn't as focused on nearly overcooked egg/chicken/rice as I'm used to from other small Chinese restaurants. Take that as a plus if you want healthy food or a minus if you are used to/prefer the other style. As to price the lunch special is a bargain, especially if you get it to go or delivery. They seem to pack more in the lunch Styrofoam than they put on the plate if you sit down to eat. For about $5 a sesame chicken will give you all the protein, carbs, and fat that you want and more than you need and that's before you choose between a soup or egg roll. I'd pay $5 for the lunch without either. I'd eat there twice as often if it were closer to work. Dinner is a bit pricier and though it's not obvious to first time perusers of the menu some orders will get steamed rice and some will get "fried rice" though the bundled fried rice here is much milder/healthier than the fried rice you might see in other Chinese restaurants it does not contain the extra vegetables I mentioned above when discussing the chicken fried rice. I guess the big take away is there is a ton of variety on their menu. They'll probably have a few dishes you love and a few you'll hate but if something isn't the way you expected it to be explore the menu until you find the ones that fit your preferences. As long as your doing your experimentation at lunch prices and have coworkers, friends, family to eat the dishes you don't like I think this restaurant will reward you.

Since my original review I have returned three times. I would highly recommend the Pork Lop. It isn't on the menu but if you ask they will make it, the spicy beef and noodle soup and the mango and coconut rice. They also have specials, many of them Lao or Malaysian but you must ask for them.

This is the kind of place you drive past daily & never give a second glance. Restaurants in strip malls usually do not pique my interest, but after reading some reviews on the ol' Yelp, I decided to give it a shot. I took the spouse, my four-year old daughter & my screaming 11-month old for lunch. The spouse ordered the green curry w/Tom Yum, I got the drunken noodles w/Tom Kha & we ordered the chicken lo mein for my four-year old (she hates rice, don't know where I went wrong with this one.) The soups were outstanding. Probably the best in town. Really perfect, spicy, savory, bright. Just freakin' great. The green curry was phenomenal. It was just the perfect blend of spicy, barely sweet with just a faint hint of acid curry that one could ask for. A little more chicken might have been nice, though... My drunken noodles--meh. Too sweet, not enough heat. There was enough beef to satisfy me, but really--the dish needed much more chili & a bit of acid & fresh herbage to wake it up. I will order this dish again & ask for it 'Thai-spicy,' but I don't think the menu should indicate it as a 'spicy dish' if it truly isn't. That said, the soups & the green curry are enough to bring me back to explore the other curries that they offer. And those pot stickers have made the list. The service was good, the people were friendly & didn't seem to mind my very loud baby.

Excellent food excellent service. The eggroll was free with my delivery order and it was the best eggroll I've ever had from a Chinese restaurant. Also try their chicken wings. Not your typical batter fried wings but so crispy and juicy. I used to get these kind when I was in Memphis and was looking for something similar since~ Definitey ordering from them again soon.

I visited this place on the recommendation of yelpers. Perhaps I choose the wrong dish. I ordered the basil fried rice. I found it to be dried out without very much basil. Not feeling Knoxville food AT ALL!!!

We enjoy having this delivered every weekend. It's delicious, and they are consistent when it comes to the amount of spice each level has. My favorite is the Drunken Noodle - Hot with bean sprouts added in.

This was a cheap and quick food stop for me, and I definitely wasn't disappointed in satisfying either of those needs. It is without-a-doubt a delivery/takeout-focused place, but dined in and it wasn't half bad. I was overwhelmed by the huge menu (especially the Thai dishes), so on a whim I just had General Tso's chicken. It was delicious as expected, but I definitely regret not trying one of the other million options on there. The lady who took my order and brought me my order was very kind and helpful, which isn't always the case in a takeout joint like this. I was a little weirded out by Fox on the TV and country and pop music coming out of the speakers, but maybe that's just because I'm not used to Tennessee restaurants.

I ordered dinner from here about a week or so ago. We called and asked for delivery and the food got here in a timely matter but they forgot one of our orders. I also feel like we paid a lot for not so much food. We got 2 wonton soups and literally there were to pieces of wonton and there was little to no meat in the wonton. The food is less than ok, probably won't be ordering from here again.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
