First off, Kanpai of Tokyo is better and cheaper, however, we had to go to Wasabi for a birthday party. It was okay. We ordered hibachi vegetables and veggie roll. The portions are smaller than Kanpai but the prices are higher. The sushi portion was quite small, and our chef actually forgot to prepare my husband and my entree (more vegetables), so we didn't get it until after the rest of our party was nearly done with dinner. By the time we got home, my stomach was a mess from the giant amount of oil in my dinner, I'm guessing. The restaurant itself was not too pleasant. The waiting area in the front, where we stayed for a good 10 minutes even though we had a reservation, was very small and hot - quite clausterphobia inducing! The interior of the restaurant was dim, dusty, and way dirtier than I expected it to be. I don't think we'll be back, birthday parties or not.

I'm a fan alright, because i've eating here since i was in high school... service is great, try their Spider Roll and the Hibachi Grill!! the chef does the trick with everyone!
(4)Ercan Ç.
The tables near the grills make it a good place to gather with friends but it is a rather expensive place. Still the quality is good and never got disappointed.

The best deal on prices is to go when lunch is served. I use this time to read and catch up on social media. So I sit in the area that has booths. I like the steak, scallops and shrimp. Rice is good too with veggies. My favorite rolls are the UT roll with shrimp tempura (no raw) or if you're brave get the Tiger Roll - it's comprehensive and delish! Service is good and the portion filling. Lunch: salad (romaine & iceberg - ask for ranch if you don't like the Ginger dressing ) hibachi entrees - lunch prices reasonable, sauteed sweet carrots.

I probably will not be coming back. The waitress was nice enough, she got all of our orders right and made sure we had drinks. The chef, though, was another story. He was either new or a complete idiot. All of the food was either undercooked or burnt. The fried rice was undercooked, the egg was burnt. My chicken was chewy and unappetizing. My girlfriends stake was undercooked and tasted awful. I asked for teriyaki sauce and he gave me something else. I'm not sure what the sauce was he gave me, but it was not what I asked for. And, as if that wasn't bad enough, our chef barely talked. He didn't preform any of the usual tricks (like trying to get you to catch rice in your mouth) and seemed determined to simply cook. I would find another place to eat if I was you.

Wasabi excels at being consistant. you can always be sure your meal will be good and possibly get a show while watching your food cook. I love the shrimp here, whatever they do to it is amazing. It isn't necessarily somewhere I visit often, mostly just for birthdays, which I assume most of their cliental can say the same. It is a bit pricy to come, but in saying that, the portions are huge. After having soup and a salad, its nearly impossible to eat all your food without having a take home box! I've had a spectrum of really entertaining chefs to the complete opposite of not even doing the volcano trick! COME ON! But in his defense there wasn't a child sitting at our table. BUT IT SHOULDN'T MATTER. Maybe.
(3)Tina F.
They serve dirty shrimp!!! I had to clean each one of my shrimp before eating them. They do not devein the shrimp before bringing it to the table. GROSS!!!!!

Wasabi is everything that you expect with a Japanese Steakhouse. It has become a birthday tradition with our youngest. We arrived with a party of 5 on Sunday night around 7pm and were pleasantly surprised to find that even with a pretty full house, there was no wait. The hostess was not exactly friendly, but that was the worst of the experience and we were quickly able to overlook her cold reception. Our server was quick and attentive. As our table filled up to capacity, she worked quickly and always with a smile. Her service was consistent from the beginning until we walked out the door. Our chef was great! He was engaging, comedic, and most importantly, he made good food. The 5 of us ordered from all over the menu - shrimp & scallops to strip, rib eye, & chicken. It was all cooked perfectly and well seasoned. The portions are enormous! The downside for this place is always the price point for me. It's pricey for what you get. At nearly $20 per person, I have pretty high expectations. We had a great experience and I'm sure we will be back next year to fulfill the birthday tradition, but there were certainly a few things that were lacking. Our miso soup seemed very watered down. It wasn't bad, just bland. Our salads were swimming in dressing. And the chocolate cake that came with a song and photo (not free) was still frozen in the center. All 5 of us should have been able to devour it, but left it melting on the plate. Overall, we had a great experience and judging by how many times we heard the 'Birthday Drum' beating so did all of the other people with birthdays that filled the restaurant.

While this is your basic Japanese Steakhouse, I must praise it for being so excellent for groups. It's also very consistent, which is a big plus. They're pretty good about accommodating food allergies, but be sure to notify your waiter before the chef comes to your station. If you enjoy Benihana or almost any other Japanese Steakhouse, you'll enjoy Wasabi!

My experience here tonight was less than desirable. Our waiter seemed very frazzled and kept forgetting things. We were crammed in at a table, more than usual. The food was excellent though. However, what bothers me the most is the fact that half of the shrimp was deveined and half wasn't. It was really disgusting. That alone caused me to lower my rating two whole stars. For the price we pay, they should be cleaned properly.

I visited Wasabi on August 20th and was terribly disappointed. This was the worst sushi I have ever had... Normally when I visit Knoxville I visit Nama, but on this trip I decided to try something different. I was served one roll - the dynamite roll I think - that was so incredibly bad! I also had a tuna tartar appetizer that appeared to be fresh tuna and tasted off... I could not finish any of the meal. Perhaps the hibachi is better...but I know I wont going back to find out.

So again while visiting the in laws the hubby and I decided to venture out, with my brother and sister in law this time tho. We had originally made reservations at Misaki but we found out after we made the reservation they were closed. So we go to Wasabi and there was an hour wait so we hung at the bar and had the UT roll that was pretty good. I had my usual vodka with water and 3 limes so you can't mess it up. When we finally got seated for hibachi they were slow getting started. But the food was sooooo good! I had shrimp and scallops with veggies. The soup and salad for starters was really good. The key that makes the food so good is the Yum Yum sauce!!!! I could drink it! I have yet to find it in Dallas so I'm going to have to order it online. Seriously this stuff is like liquid gold!!!!!!
(4)Katie P.
We have been coming here for years as a family and of course like half of Knoxville its my favorite place to eat! :)
(5)Jared M.
My wife and I come here a lot. We usually have a good experience every time that we have went. Apps: Their sushi is prepared as you order it and is normally good. Is accompanied with soy sauce, wasabi powder and ginger. At dinner you will also receive two pieces of grilled shrimp as a mini-app (included in your dinner order). Soup and Salad: Their soup can be a bit salty at times and is served at coffee temperature. The salad is made from a house dressing and is OK. You have to ask for ranch on it if you want it. Main course: The two items that we have enjoyed about the rest are the filet and red snapper meals. Portions are always good (accompanied with rice & veggies). Sauces: The main ones they offer at the table are shrimp sauce, ginger, teriyaki, hot mustard, and hot sauce. You can tip the chefs separate from the waiters. And if you do this to ones and become a regular I have found that they will take good care of you.
(4)Nikolas R.
Great service. Our waiter was very quick to take our orders (lunch time) and the chef is very talented. The chef (JJ) prepared everything with precision skill, well cooked and had fun in the process. I visit hibachi style restaurants in my hometown of Miami often (Ruscon, Benihana,Samurai) and I can honestly say this is a very good restaurant. Knoxville has a great restaurant here.
(4)Sorin B.
Love this place! Every time I come to Knoxville I have to eat at this place! The staff is extremely friendly and the food is top notch! I ordered steak lunch portion with fried rice and veggies. Their house sauce is very fresh and delicious! We started off with Caesar Salad, hot soup and sushi. Everything was just perfect I couldn't ask for a better quality lunch.
(5)Holly D.
Stay Away...Overpriced...you pay twice as much as you do at other Japanese restaurants. Our service and our cook were great but the soup was VERY watered down and had no flavor. The rest if our meal was sub par for the price we paid and we didn't even get Japanese noodles with the meal like we have at other Japanese restaurants. We wanted to try something different but this was very disappointing.
(1)Iris C.
I've been in search for a sushi place in Knoxville forever and think i found it. They seem to be everywhere but none so far satisfying. They have a good variety of sushi for a reasonable price. I swear I've gone to other places in knoxville, and it was just overpriced California rolls decorated pretty. Great rolls and very satisfied. I just didnt like how they cut the pieces so small that when you grab it, it falls apart. The house salad was good. The dressing was different to the ginger dressing I'm use to. It was like a mixture of ginger dressing and spicy mayo. The atmosphere is clean and it seemed like the whole staff was guys. Service was okay. They also have hibachi if you're into that.
(4)Anita S.
Fun Hibachi restaurant. Extreme portions. I ordered the Ribeye and Scallops. You get about 2 cups of fried rice (which isn't greasy given the fact it's mixed right in front of you). 2 cups of fresh vegetables (zuchini and carrots and onions etc). 2 Shrimp. Special sauce that is good on everything! (It is similar to one that I make on my own--mayo/sriacha sauce and lemon juice). Only hard part if you meet friends there, seating is close and shoulder to shoulder (lefties beware) and they won't seat you unless you have your whole party there. Enjoy!
(3)John D.
Food is good (and very expensive), but they rush you so badly that you can't enjoy it at all. The salad gets dropped before you take the first spoonful of soup and then the chef is cooking before you can take another bite. They start dropping checks as soon as the last thing is coming off the grill and start cleaning the table around you. I've given them multiple chances and it's always the same; so rushed and stressful that I can't enjoy the food. The sushi is 4-5 star, but also expensive. The whole place is always sticky feeling and not quite clean in spite of a very nice decor.
(2)Doug T.
Great place. Chesney at the bar was awesome! All the food was better than expected. Great place to brings friends for great food and entertainment!
(5)Reid K.
The best hibachi show I have ever seen. The food score was an 81, but I believe that was due to a bad inspector. There were no signs of any health problems, and the restaurant was well kept. The food was delicious, and I could not eat all of it! I would highly recommend this restaurant to any one. The atmosphere is great, and the people are friendly.
(5)Richard L.
I normally give 5 stars to the best japanese place in town and this is it. We love it here.
(5)Hillbilly P.
My family had a birthday party for my Nephew here, there were 14 of us in all. The service was good considering our large party. The food was good (I had the Steak and Chicken and the Steak was cooked correctly) and the portions were huge. But .... the restaurant is dirty, aged and tired, the tables and seat backs were all sticky, when I grabbed a chair to move it, my hand stuck to it. The carpet is horrible, dirty and stained. Sections of carpet around the tables have been cut out and replaced over time and the newer sections were taped back in with 2 inch masking tape! I know it's hard to keep it clean the way the chefs throw rice balls at the patrons as part of the intertainment but you can still take time and clean it correctly. I have to say, I have had my last trip to this Wasabi.
(2)Annie B.
This place has good food, but try to avoid it on Friday or Saturday night without a reservation. If you've been to Benihana up north, it's the same thing plus an annoyingly loud drum that is played for everyone who claims it's their birthday. The first time I went to this place. I waited for an.hour.and.a.half. It was outrageous. I wouldn't have stayed but my friend REALLY wanted hibachi. I was so mad. There were two of us, so I don't know why they didn't squeeze us in to one of the tables. We approached the host stand they said we were just going to have to wait because we didn't have a reservation. Then he SHOOED my friend away. WTF? Food is good, show is fun, though a little robotic. I usually get shrimp and scallops and it's great. Wait staff is very prompt at refilling, taking dishes, etc. A little expensive, but most of these types of places are, so it's not a big surprise. I'd go there again, but not on a weekend night, and probably not that often.
(3)Jay W.
If you like loads of rice, and very little meat you will like this place. Everything is plastered with teriyaki sauce or some other salty sauce, and the service is fair to poor.
(2)Chris O.
Moved from 3 to 4 stars after eating on the steakhouse side of the restaurant. Wasabi has pretty good portions and the price is right for a memorable Japanese steakhouse experience. I think the lady next to me put it best when she said, "it was good, but i've had better." Original sushi review is below. ____________________________________________ Located off Lovell near Turkey Creek, Wasabi is a Japanese Steakhouse/Sushi Bar. I must be a real sucker for a sign that says SUSHI, because I skipped the Steakhouse side and ate in the sushi bar. Mistake. I agree they have fresh sushi, and a pretty nice variety as well. But I was really disappointed with about half of what I ordered. They did make a few really nice rolls here, but they missed some of the basics. I enjoy a nice big piece of nigiri just like anyone else, but my octopus and conch were sliced so thick, I had to chew. And chew. And chew. I've had both pieces in other places, and never expected to have to work my way through a piece of fresh fish like I did with these. Maybe the chef was new or inexperienced, but these pieces were too thick for most people. And I'm pretty sure the crab was imitation. Are you F'n kidding me? The seafood guy couldn't find crab, but he could find conch and octopus? sigh..... But there are good things about Wasabi, enough to get them to 3 stars. The service was good. The rolls that I tried were tasty and original. The price was fair. I think next time I will stick with the steakhouse side of the restaurant, I'm pretty certain they are better than a 3 star restaurant. I might eat a sushi roll or two when I come back, but I think I can find a better sushi restaurant than Wasabi.
