Quaint place just across the street from Pellissippi State in Hardin Valley. It's not a very big restaurant, and it's sandwiched in a block of stores in front of a neighborhood. Mikata has a nice, home-y feel to it, and although the seating area is small, it always seems to have enough room to accommodate everybody. Servers here were quite friendly, although they weren't really on top of drinks. I ran out of water after finishing the salad before the main hibachi plate, but I didn't get it refilled until our waitress came with the main dishes. Nevertheless, they were nice; other than that slight hiccup, nothing was wrong with the service. As for the food, I ordered a salmon roll and the hibachi steak and scallop. Looking back, the salmon roll was completely unnecessary. They don't mess around with portions here, and chances are you'll have enough for tonight's meal and leftovers for tomorrow's meal. That being said, the salmon roll was quite good, although I don't really agree with restaurants sprinkling sesame seeds on top of sushi. (Just a matter of personal preference.) This place, in my opinion, deserves a 3.5 star rating, but the service made me bump it up to a 4 star. The food isn't the absolute best, but it's a cozy spot for dinner and I'd gladly come back any time.

Their entree portions are huge! I had to confirm what they offered for entrees because I never saw such a thing! So I ordered the tofu entree that came with broccoli, cucumber, onion, deep fried tofu, noodles, and fried rice (has terikayi sauce). Yes, two types of carbs. WHAT?!!? Are they trying to get people fat? I didn't want to finish my dish and I didn't. I didn't enjoy it either. I liked the fried tofu though and that was about it. This is great for the "cheap fast food Asian" type of food which is not my style. I usually order sushi but they only had two options - cucumber roll and avocado roll, which are not worth it!

This place is great! I tried it for the first time tonight. I got the tuna roll, shrimp tempura roll, seaweed salad, shrimp udon, and the shrimp w/scallop hibachi. The seaweed salad was very good (juicy) and there was a lot of it. The sushi was ok, the tuna was good but the shrimp tempura was a different batter than tempura (more like crumbs). The shrimp udon was fried and so delicious! I didn't care for the lettuce, but the dish was very very good. The shrimp and scallop hibachi was great. The weird part was that they included half rice and half noodles, but the scallops and shrimp were big and tasted great. I will be back. Try it if you haven't!

This place is great! Always an awesome stop for lunch, and reasonably priced. The service is fast and friendly. Be careful coming around noon on weekday lunches, sometimes they fill up every table.

I love this place, best Japanese food I've had in Knoxville. The food is delicious especially their entrees they are loaded and super affordable! It's definitely worth a visit.

A good place that gets super busy come lunch time. If you want hibachi but don't want the flair then come here!

The portions here are enormous! I always plan to make a second meal out of my entree or split it with my husband when I order. I work down the road so I typically do takeout, I've only sat and eaten in the restaurant once several years ago (I don't remember the experience really but I don't remember it being bad). Takeout is usually pretty quick (food within 10-20 minutes depending on size of order) and the ordering process is a breeze, even with large orders with multiple payments. Over the years I've tried several items of their menu. My favorite being their stir fried udon or their classic beef and chicken entree. Their gyoza, spring rolls, miso soup, and sushi are all delicious too, but nothing to write home about. The entree portions are huge! It comes with steamed or fried rice, noodles, veggies, and meat depending on which option you choose. It also comes with a salad, that I could probably do without (not a fan of iceberg lettuce but I like the ginger dressing). I do get tired of the flavor of the entree from time to time so I try to mix it up and get something else on the menu. I'm not sure if I didn't work so close if I'd visit here so often. The food is good but not on the same level of Anaba or East. I wish I could give it 3.5 stars. But if you are looking for a heaping portion of fast Japanese food for cheap, go here!

Not too shabby. Lots of food for the price. I like the fact that they include both noodles and rice on the lunch deal. I have been here twice and have always ordered the chicken and shrimp hibachi meal. It oftens carries over to the next day for lunch leftovers due to the sheer quantity of goodness. Overall, I would have to say that I'm a fan, and that I will eat here more often than not. I've not tried the sushi yet, but I plan on it soon.

For the price this is a fantastic stop in the Hardin valley area for some Japanese/sushi! You can't watch them cook in front of you like other habachi restaurants in town but for me that's just fine. I would rather not smell like the food I just ate. Price is affordable and portions are just right. Of course with plenty of rice I always leave stuffed. They have a couple of TVs to watch what is going on so that's nice. Service is usually quick however we typically get ours to go. Great place to go if you are in the area. Small business so it's always nice to support a local restaurant!

I don't give 5 stars lightly but this cool little place in Hardin Valley has become one of my favorite lunch spots on the West end. The food is delicious- I love the shrimp with rice and vegetables- but what makes Mikata truly special is the staff. In the 20 or so times I have eaten here, every single staff member I have interacted with has had the same easy-going, friendly style- even when completely weeded (which they frequently are). I'm talking everyone from the high school aged servers to the owner/operators. You should eat here for lunch or dinner- I think you will find yourself coming back again and again as I do.

I saw the Google reviews for this place and they were so high I was excited to try it. Plus, it's closer to my end of town (which is nice because options are limited this far out in West Knox.) I placed a carry out order which was sushi only. When I arrived I picked a few things off the take out menu but when I went up the cash register to place my order I was told they would only make the rolls that were on the sushi specials for the day. There were about 5 to choose from which is very limited compared to the full menu. I'm not sure if this is a regular thing or if they were low on supplies. They did say they could make one of the rolls not on the specials list for me but the rest I had to choose from the list. Seemed odd but ok. I waited about 15 minutes for my order so no issues there. The rolls I had were just meh. About the same quality as Kroger or Publix sushi. The real problem was with the roll they made for me that was not on the specials list. The tuna was obviously bad. It was a dark grey color and smelled awful. Obviously, eating bad fish is a major problem and for a place to serve it to someone is unacceptable. Makes me wonder if they agreed to make the roll because they were trying to make a buck off of something past the expiration date. I got to it last and now I have to wonder if the other rolls I ate are going to make me sick. I don't know if others had the choice to order from the full menu and those were better rolls or what but this experience was beyond disappointing. The only positive thing I can say is that the hibachi orders that were coming out while I was waiting smelled and looked wonderful. If you're going to go here you probably should stick to those items.

This restaurant has been a favorite of mine since its opening. The food is delicious and consistent from visit to visit. I have not found any other place that provides large portion sizes with low prices like Mikata does. Give this place a try.

The food is very good, and reasonably priced. The only downside is the service is sooooo slow. How can a restaurant always be so busy, and only have 2 servers?

This is a great sushi place with wonderful service. My manager took my team here as a Holiday offsite. All the rolls ordered were tasty and a decent portion size. I wish I could remember the names, but we ordered several of the tempura based rolls and they were all winners. I ended up getting a more hibachi style entree and it was huge!! Chicken served with veggies, rice (steamed or fried) and noodles. I of course had to get a to-go box. I will say there were more onions than green veggies, but it was still very good. I was very impressed when our server brought out two cute heart shaped rolls on the house and placed it in front of our manager. He said it was from the kitchen to thank him for his business. I'll go back here anytime.

Went in around 1145 am and got right in. We were greeted promptly and ordered drinks but needed a second to look over the menu since it was our first time. The server came back to take our order several minutes later. I had a question about the shrimp udon item on the menu I wanted to know exactly what it was like and what was in it. She explained it has noodles with shrimp with seasoning so I order it. In the meantime 2 guys sit down beside us and order and get there food in about 6 minutes and we still hadn't recieved ours. Then several more tables got there food that came in after us. All the items varied from beef and chicken to shrimp. So didn't seem like ours should take any longer. My husband ordered shrimp and beef with rice. We finally receive our food and mine is on a bed of shredded lettuce. I am not eating lettuce out right now bc I am pregnant and just steer clear of uncooked items from places. So I was going to see if they could swap it out for something since on the menu it doesn't say that and she did not tell me that either. I do not touch the food and we finally after 5 min flag our server down. First thing she says to me is that she will have to talk to her manager bc they won't accommadate me because there is tech nothing wrong with the food. So I said ok just take it off then and she said they prob wouldn't do that either but she would ask. So she comes back with the plate and says they won't do anything since I ate 3 of the shrimp!!!!! There were supposed to be 10. I had not touched it so they jipped me on my portion too. It was a nightmare. No manager ever came over. Made the server do it all and the way it was handled was very poor. They finally said they would just swap it out but will never do it again. Ok well I will never be back anyways. So I left without eating lunch. Terrible experience. My husband was upset with the whole experience as well.

Absolutely LOVE it!! I was so thankful when this restaurant opened right across the street from my workplace. They have excellent food, friendly service, and are so convenient and fast. The sushi is fresh and expertly prepared. I haven't had any that disappointed or just seemed "off." My favorite roll is the Black Angel. It's one of their specialty rolls, so they don't have it all the time. I keep my eyes peeled for it because it's one of the most delicious things I have ever eaten - white tuna, salmon roe, and a thin ribbon of a mango sauce that is slightly sweet, but not too sweet. I could eat that roll every day of my life and never get tired of it. If you're not into sushi, no worries. There are lots of options for you. The miso soup and ginger dressed salad are some of the best around, and the spring rolls are excellent. They taste like the ones my Mom has made for years. I've never been a huge fan of tofu, but I love theirs! The tofu stir-fry is great, as are the rest of their option (chicken, beef, shrimp). One of my faves is the Udon soup. It's served hot and freshly prepared and is the perfect entree on a cold winter's day. Paired with the hot tea, I feel pleasantly filled, but not over stuffed. Also, try the vegetable tempura. Mushrooms, broccoli, carrots, and onions perfectly fried and served on a pretty plate with sauce for dipping. Yum! I would be remiss to not mention the staff. Everyone is so very friendly and happy to see you. They go out of their way to make sure your experience is a good one. I just love every one of them! :-)

Excellent food. I always get the Tofu entree, and it is always cooked to perfection. I love the flavors in the sauce... delicious and unique. On Tuesday nights, they have sushi for half price, so we usually get at least two rolls.
