It's been a few years since I've been to Dazzo's so I stopped into today for lunch. They had what seemed a good deal for lunch, $6.00 for a small salad, a slice of pizza and a drink so I tried that, but spent an extra $1.00 to add prosciutto and olives to my slice. So how was it? Very good, just the right amount of chow for lunch. The salad was okay, nothing special but the pizza was excellent. Truthfully Dazzo's would have gotten 5 Stars but service was weak with only one harried waitress working the entire floor during the lunch rush. So stop by at lunch and you'll enjoy the food, just make sure you are not in a big hurry.

This place has some seriously great pie and I had no idea!! I had eaten at dazzos many years ago and thought it was just so so. It was New York style, which is my absolute favorite, but it wasn't pie-in-the-sky awesome. I tried it again last week thought and it was great! It changed ownership at some point I believe, and this may have something to do with it. Pie: perfect thickness, crunchy, toppings were delightful and aplenty. I can't remember the name, but it was a sort of Neapolitan pizza. There was capicola, black olives, chunks of baked garlic, purple onion, and I think drizzles of feta. Whatever it was, it was quite memorable........

My boyfriend and I really like the Grandma's Recipe pie here. The sauce is super flavorful with extra garlic. It's different than almost anywhere in town. I have heard that many people had bad experiences with the previous owner, however, the current owner also owns Bistro at the Bijou and she is super sweet. She bought all the recipes along with the location, so although it's yummy, none of it is authentic to the chefs. If you don't mind some Jersey attitude, head to Gavino's in Bearden. Same recipes, but they're authentic to the owner, Gavin.

Disappointed. Said they deliver, call up to get delivery, they only deliver in walking distance. So I WALK there to eat. Get the lunch special and an extra slice. The salad was very good, the pizza was so so. Was over cooked. Overall a fair experience. I would try another place first before going here again.

Dazzo's Pizzeria located on Gay Street in Downtown Knoxville, TN has amazingly delicious pizza! They offer a verity of pastas and heroes, but the New York Style pizza they offer is really the main attraction. I felt the side salads leave something to be desired, but everything is else I have tried will not disappointed! Dazzo's Buffalo Chicken pizza is hands down my favorite and the best Buffalo Chicken in all of Knoxville. They have an awesome and quick lunch special that runs until 2pm, so you can grab a slice, salad, and drink for $6 , which makes grabbing a quick slice convenient and at a great value. No, the pizza is not as good as ordering form an establishment in New York City, but if you don't want to make the 13 hour drive, Dazzo's is as good as it gets!

It's hard to find new York style pizza in Knoxville. This pizza was pretty good. The sauce was tasty and it has a crispy crust which is what you expect with new York style pizza. It wasn't the best I've had but it was good enough to go back and the garlic knots were very good.

Wandered into this place tonight having never heard of it. Will definitely go back. It's a cozy space with a cool atmosphere. It reminded me of places in downtown Memphis. The food was great. My husband and daughter loved the NY-style cheese pizza. I had homemade cheese manicotti. It was AMAZING. So hot and fresh, loaded with cheese and perfectly spiced. Only downside was Caesar salad that was drowning in dressing. The croutons were fantastic, though. The service was fast, friendly and laid-back, even though they were slammed on a busy Saturday night. Overall very impressed.

Dazzo's has a new owner and now I am a fan. The food is always delivered hot and fresh, and the quality is excellent. You won't go wrong with the pasta or the pizza- in fact, sometimes I have a hard time deciding. Parking can be a bit of a headache since it's downtown, but overall it's worth it if you want New York style pizza.

Okay, it's still awesome pizza, but the last few times our pizza has been too pale, meaning the cheese is still white, not a nice golden brown. Even after we've asked for the cheese to be browned, it still comes out white. I hesitate to ask for "well done" because we tried that once and the bottom was badly burned. Anyway, the pizza is still great, but it would be better a little more brown. I'll be more clear next time.

Very good pizza. Both my husband and I liked it. Usually I like thicker crusts but this has the slight crisp of thin and crispy and yet softness of a thicker one. Also there was enough sauce to satisfy my liking and not to much to over do it for my husband. The garlic knots were amazing. A little well done but the sauce was so good and made up for the crispness. I would highly recommend this place. Things to keep in mind. The Resturante isn't real large and you do have to pay for parking downtown.

Best Pizza I've had in Tennessee thus far. I haven't noticed any inconsistency as other reviewers have, perhaps it's the new management? In any case, the strong suit of Dazzo's is definitely the crust. Its flavor is quite unlike any crust I've had before, and it's very tasty. Coming in close second would be the toppings, which are always extremely fresh tasting. They do take quite a while to get your pizza out at times, but it's well worth it in my opinion.

Eaten here many times. The food has always been excellent. I heard there was a new owner so I gave it another try. Wow! An even better experience this time. The pizza special was incredible and unique. The atmosphere reminded me of neighborhood meeting place. The staff and chef were happy to accommodate all my special requests. Try the buffalo chicken pizza! This is my new favorite place to eat.

I am so sorry to say this was my favorite pizza place in town for a couple of years. New ownership took over and the pizza will never be the same I'm afraid. I ordered my usual the Neapolitan. I am going to have to go back one last time to see if there is much potential left. Just to let you know. Definitely not the same.

I walked in with my party of 7. There was only one server, and a very large party with reservations walked in right behind us. So I definitely understand her frustration and difficult ability to take care of everyone, but she actually managed better than expected. We ordered 3 large pizza's. One veggie, one margarita, and one 4 cheese. They all tasted pretty bland. Nothing spectacular, just very average and uninteresting. I felt like the dough was a bit too dry, and the ingredients didn't really taste all that fresh. It was definitely not very memorable. I would have given them 3 stars, but what made me really turned off by the place was the cook that was making the pizza's in the kitchen. He had a abnormally large beard, and being in the kitchen, I would expect the least to have employee's trim their facial hair. All I could think about was how much of his facial hair falls off in his process of making a pizza. I just couldn't bare to think about it. But thankfully he did have some gloves on. Overall, I've definitely experienced better.

My boyfriend and I were in Knoxville on a quick trip and before going to a show at the Bijou, we stopped in for dinner at Dazzo's. The restaurant is a small and cozy little space. Nothing special but not bad either. Clean, comfortable, all that good stuff. Cool posters on the wall to keep the eyes busy for a while. The wait staff was friendly and attentive and funny when we joked around with them. As for the food, we had too much and it was all good. We split the "famous" garlic knot thingies, I forget the names. Basically rolls with Parmesan cheese and butter. Cooked perfectly, crunchy outside and soft and warm on the inside. The sauce served with them was also good. Then we got our sandwiches. We got WAY more food than we ultimately needed. I got the Five O. It was massive. It was a big sandwich that basically had a salad on top. I wound up only eating about half. All the meat and cheese was delicious. Everything tasted high quality. I was more than satisfied. My boyfriend had Chicken Club and was also plenty happy with it. It was a bunch of food, that was all tasty and our service was very good. Definitely worth your time and money and a great choice if downtown for a show or something.

Absolutely loved the pizza and the atmosphere although the laid back vibe didn't lend itself to great service. Lots of old and vintage posters on the walls and a great music variety playing the whole time. Possibly the best pizza crust I've ever eaten! Will definitely go again when we're not in a rush.

I made a mistake eating here again. When I first tried this place five years ago, I thought it was way overpriced and not really worth it. Well, five years later, I feel the exact same way, but I was dumb enough to come back. I ordered an 18 in large pizza. In New York, at my local pizzeria, a large pie costs around $13. Here, in Tennessee, Dazzo's charges $16. Dazzo's also does not sell pizza by the slice, which is really obnoxious, plus they force you to be waited on if you dine in. This not like most pizza places where you can just order pizza by the pie or the slice at the counter and sit your butt down and wait until your pizza is ready. You can't do this here. It makes no sense, but whatever. It is extremely rare to find a pizza place that does this. Only Pizza Hut comes to mind, and that doesn't really count unless you are desperate. Dazzo's serves Italian dishes in addition to pizza, but most places that do that simply have a dining room for fine dining and/or a couple of tables for ordering pizza and dishes. Anyway, the pizza comes out, and although it is supposed to be 18 inches, it clearly is not at all the diameter of a proper 18 inch large pizza. It is somehow actually more like maybe 15 inches? I'm not sure of the exact size, but I can tell you that the slices were impossibly small for a supposed 18 inch pie. Like at least a third smaller than they should have been, with way too much crust. The taste of the pizza was pretty good. Not as good as my favorite pizza places in New York, and not as good as DaVinci's Pizza in Old City. DaVinci's rocks: whole pies, slices, counter service, excellent prices; guess where I should have gone? So basically, at Dazzo's, I paid a HIGHER than New York price for a 15 inch or so "large" pizza that was more like an extra medium perhaps? Paying a higher than New York price in Tennessee and getting significantly less pizza really pisses me off. :) (Also, I HIGHLY recommen RED ONION as a MUCH better pizza shop. MUCH better pizza and MUCH better prices and MUCH faster and no being waited on for pizza.

Update! If your only beef with this place previously was the owner, you can relax. Martha from the ever-popular Bistro at the Bijou owns the place now. If you're familiar with the Bistro you know that you can be confidant that Dazzo's can only take a turn for the best under her ownership. So go forth and gorge upon delicious pizza!

Love this place! Not sure if I've been since Martha took over (the old owner was a meanie), but the pizza has always been delicious. They used to have a really delicious sausage for the pizza, but it went away sadly.

Not bad, but not great. The atmosphere is what makes this place. I get the feel like I'm in NY in some tiny hole in the wall pizza joint. I've only ever had the pizza, so I can't speak for the menu as a whole, but the pizza is just okay. You can get a 10" or 18" whole pizza or they have a few options by the slice. The beer selection is good and the staff and service are great. There are better options for pizza, like Barley's in the Old City, but for the location, price, and charm this place gets the job done.

Oh, Dazzo's. I've been here many times. It has changed hands, and changed drastically for the worse. The previous owner was a boisterous New Yorker who ran the restaurant well and made fantastic food. Their garlic rolls were ridiculous (in the best way). It was a favorite. Since new ownership, the place has gone downhill fast. The aforementioned garlic rolls, previously soft, moist, and mind numbingly delicious, are now a tough, overcooked inconsistent shadow of their former selves. Bummer! Service is slow and unfriendly. We used to come here for a lunch break and in recent times it's been difficult to get in and out in less than an hour. My experience today was abysmal and it's convinced me not to go back, and to write this review - since the people running the restaurant now evidently aren't too concerned. We ordered some hero sandwiches, one of which was a chicken parm with marinara sauce (the menu's words). We got the food and discovered after eating a bit that there was beef in the marinara. When we got our waitress' attention and explained that my wife doesn't eat red meat and that there was beef in what was supposed to be marinara, she didn't apologize or offer to get us a replacement. She acted annoyed and said "uh, I don't make the food". Sorry, aren't you representing the restaurant? Isn't it standard protocol to apologize and try to fix it when a mistake was made? After dealing with her insulting attitude she eventually took the sandwich off our ticket and we left. This is an isolated incident but it represents what I've encountered in this restaurant a lot lately - rude service, inconsistent food at best. It's a huge bummer because it used to be awesome and I'd love to see it go back to the way it was. If anyone from this establishment reads this, please, PLEASE hire some friendly, experienced wait staff and some people who can cook the food like it used to be!

In town for a few days on business and had a craving for some local pizza. I weighed out my options and chose Dazzo's. I had the "Grandma's Pizza" but added Pep and Basil. To put a long story short, I spent 3 nights downtown and had Dazzo's twice for dinner. I had the thin crust and really enjoyed it, I would definitely recommend giving it a shot.

I walked into this place with a group of friends last night and immediately felt like we had hit the jackpot. Dazzo's has been enthusiastically recommended to Hubband and me a few times--don't know what took so long for us to check it out, but I'm glad we did. First: I have an uncontrollable eye-rolling reaction to anything I see termed "New York-style," mainly because I don't know what that label really means, but the feeling I got when we sat down last night really took me back home: checkered floors, open pizza oven area behind the counter, laminated one-sheet menus, those rattly, kind of crappy chrome-looking two-to-four top tables, and the delicious pizza smell? I don't know, but it got me in the mood...for pizza. Second: There were lots of folks of all walks of life in there just having a good time and the waitstaff was right there with them. Our garlic knots (yummy) came out kinda slow and the pizza guys actually goofed on our order but our waitress was so warm, upfront, and quick to offer solutions that I still enjoyed myself-and we scored some free pizza when they fixed our order. All in all, Dazzo's was a perfect Friday night joint for our group of friends wrapping up First Friday. I will be back to try some of their pasta dishes!!

Read new reviews first. Dazzos is now owned by Martha Boggs who also runs The Bistro at the Bijou. The old owner that turned a lot of people off has opened Gavinos in Bearden. With that said, the food here is fantastic. The new chef does creative specials & has nailed everything on the menu. The special mushroom fennel soup was so good that we ordered it twice in one day. Grandmas pizza is garlicy & cheesy & satisfies my desires for extra tomato sauce on pizza. The vegetarian hero has emerged as a new favorite too. The bread is toasted perfectly, and layered so that the roll doesn't get soggy halfway through the meal. The veggies are plentiful & fresh. It's also a better value than the veggie sub at Lenny's down the street. You can get great food at dazzos, with great prices. We usually order takeout & we have never had an order screwed up. Give it a shot & don't be afraid to venture away from pizza when you visit.

This place has failed multiple health inspections. I actually found a worm on pizza. When I took the pizza back and told them about it they refunded my money but their excuse was that sometimes worms get in the canned pizza sauce. 1: why are you using canned sauce, 2: I have never found a worm in my pizza sauce from Trader Joes, Earthfare, or even the likes of Foodcity or Walmart. Stay away from this place. After the original owner left this place went down hill.

This is, without a doubt, some of the best pizza I've ever had. I got a Neopolitan pizza, the classic round style, while others in my party chose to order a Sicilian, which is rectangular (aka square pieces of pizza too). Wow. My Neopolitan had a classic New York style thin crust, the kind that's perfect for folding your piece of pizza in half; the flavor and texture of the crust was also excellent. For toppings, I chose eggplant, spinach, peppers, onions, basil, and mushrooms. Now, any place that offers eggplant as a pizza topping is automatically better to me. Overall, though, I thought the quantity of toppings was very good, and all the toppings were present in pretty equal amounts (i.e. the cheaper toppings, like the bell peppers, didn't dominate my pizza). The slices were huge, but it was soooo good I couldn't get bites in my mouth fast enough. I also managed to snag a bite of my friends' Sicilian, which they'd topped with garlic and eggplant. The Sicilian had a much thicker, doughier crust, which I wasn't as fond of, but the flavor of this one was also excellent nonetheless. We got there around 7 on a Friday night, and only a few tables were occupied. By 8:30, however, there wasn't an empty seat in the house, and people were walking in and walking straight back out. The service was pretty good; the pizzas came out on time. The main issue was that our waitress wasn't the most attentive, and it was sometimes hard to get her attention. It took two tries to get my water glass refilled. To me, the service issues were relatively minor, however, and I can't wait to go back.

This place really seems to have polarized the Yelp pizza community. Some people think it's God's gift to pizza while other people think it's a blight. At the risk of restating what everyone else has already covered, I'll simply summarize my experience at Dazzo's with the following bullet points: rude owner / manager guy below average pizza too expensive for what you get ambivalent servers and slow service If this sounds like something that you might like, go for it. I'd do 0 stars if possible. $25 for a Margherita pizza? Waiting over 45 mins on a Tuesday evening at 5:30 pm? Owner laughing and making rude comments in the back? Next time, I'm going to walk down to DaVinci's in the old city(they rock). Too bad for Dazzo's, they are located between my office and my apartment and I order pizza about once a week at least. I'm willing to walk an extra 9 blocks to the old city to avoid them.

Its wonderful pizza that reminds me of NYC. YUMMY!!! We have always wanted garlic rolls that are featured on the menu, they never have them. It is a bit spendy, though quite good.

This has been my favorite Pizza place since opening a few years back. The older owner, (Damon...maybe) was a jerk to employees and luke-warm to customers, but made great dishes. If you got to know him, he would warm up...some. I have ate here twice since new ownership took over. No more yelling...but they are often out of items. They'll make you something on the fly, like a sausage roll, but it doesn't taste as good as the old. Took customers in for my LAST time yesterday. We got slices and salad at lunch. All our re-heated slices were over-done, pizza oven wasn't cleaned well and we all got black old crust remnants on our slices. Downhill, and wouldn't be surprised if they don't make in 6 months. I hate that this place is so bad now since i work right on top of it!

Let me first tell you why I don't like this place. I walked in after work (I work downtown) looking for something easier than getting home and making dinner. It had been a late night. Dazzo's had opened about a month prior to this and the crowds I always saw there made me want to try it. I place my order. The woman at the counter was extremely nice and made some really nice suggestions. I ordered the marghueritte pizza with no toppings (as suggested) and a side salad. I sat there for approximately 45 minutes waiting on my pizza. That last sentence stands alone because 45 minutes is ridiculous. Though they had many call-ins, I watched a girl come in after me, place her order, and come back and pick up her pizza before mine was ever placed in the oven. The restaurant itself wasn't busy. I approached the girl at the counter and stated that I was a little perturbed because I had been waiting for over 30 minutes and watched at least one customer's order go before mine. She looked at me and told me I was wrong, that all the orders had been call-ins. I'm willing to give her the benefit and say that she probably became defensive and simply reacted without realizing that telling me I was wrong was not going to go over really well. I asked her how long it would take and she said he was putting my pizza in the oven at that moment. I watched her turn around to the guy making the pizzas, tell him what I'd said (though he'd probably heard me bc the kitchen's open) and he then began making my pizza. The owner (he was at least the guy in charge) had seen me at the counter, approached one of his employees (I couldn't hear what was said) and then looked at me and started yelling hateful things about impatient customers while he stomped around the back. I was so taken aback I was beside myself. I did receive my pizza and an apology from the girl at the counter who stated that a dish washer had quit that evening and they were behind. Here's the deal. I worked in restaurants for 8 years. I understand bad days. A diswasher quitting certainly makes a bad day. But justifications are not excuses. I saw poor management, an owner/guy in charge who was unapologetic and at least seemingly the cause of staff turnover. I didn't expect an apology. But I also certainly did not expect, as a patron of your establishment, to be made to feel as if I were the problem, not welcome, the cause of all your troubles, etc. Bad days are just that. I certainly learned to never take it out on a customer or at least to expect bad reviews when I did. As for the food. I actually liked the taste of the pizza. However, as noted by another reviewer, you have to reheat when you get home. The salad, an iceberg plus a few vegetables concoction, was not worth $10. For all the good things this place has going for it, you have to take into account the bad. It's a game of weighing the pros and cons, the cons just really came out on top for me. It's sad, because making your own mozzarella is a really big pro. Just tells you how bad my experience was. I'd urge readers to read all the cons in even the good reviews of Dazzo's. I was surprised to see so many myself. Please try it out for yourself, though. It was new when I visited and maybe hadn't worked out all the kinks. As for it being New York style pizza, I guess I'd disagree. I've had pizza in New York that is very similar, but this is a more authentic Italian style pizza. New York sized slices. Speaking of New York, I have never been treated so rudely in New York as I was at Dazzo's. Several cliches come to mind: (1) first impressions are lasting, (2) the customer is always right, (3) don't bite the hand that feeds you...

I feel that I have to defend this place some after reading some of these reviews. Here goes... Some people complain about the prices of this place. Although I agree that the prices of the pies are little on the high side, two slices and a drink for lunch won't bust your budget. And the quality that you get from this place backs up the prices for the pizza. I tried the neopolitan, white, and grandma slices when I went there for lunch the other day. The white slice brought me back home to Queens. It had the right amount of mozzarella and ricotta cheeses, and it was well seasoned. The crust hit the bulls-eye of pizza crusts, especially since there are very few crusts I find acceptable here in Knoxville. The grandma slice would have used some more sauce, since Grandma pizzas usually have equal parts of cheese to sauce. But the quality of the sauce is just as good as the sauce I make at home. The Neopolitan slice was EXACTLY like what you get in the boroughs of NYC. So for $2.50 a slice and refillable soft drinks, I'd go back to this place every so often, especially to try out some of their entrees. As for the owner, I got to chat with him for a couple of minutes as he was whipping up some pies. He's a Long Island guy, which didn't surprise me given the quality of the pizza, and he's had pizza experience with some of the popular places out on the island (I think Gino's came to mind when we were talking). I believe he was on top of the servers and cooks, making sure food came out in a timely fashion, but his attitude was no different than the successful pizza places in NY. I didn't hear anything derogatory, so I found no problem with how the place was run. Overall, I can say with a high level of confidence that you won't find a slice as close to NY as Dazzos. I've had Mangia, Elidio's, DaVinci's, Barley's, etc. and this place easily rose above the rest. But I'd recommend this place only for lunch right now unless you want to unload a lot of money for a very good pie. I'll be coming back to try the entrees soon.

What to do on a blah, rainy night in downtown? Drop $28 for one huge veggie and one small cheese pizza, with plenty left over for lunch tomorrow. Martha Boggs from the nearby Bistro @ the Bijou, another terrific lunch & dinner stop of 20+ years, has revamped this pizza joint into an inviting and delicious destination. It may look the same as years past, but the welcoming attitude and pleasant staff there are now another world. Dazzo's huge menu and inviting staff are the real deal for downtown Knoxville. We'll be back again soon.

Never would I have guessed that I would be one to bash a restaurant but today was a horrid experience. My wife saw a commercial for Dazzo's and their eggplant rolatina and went there with high expectations. We started by ordering garlic rolls and were told 'sorry we're out.' Okay - didn't understand that but - okay. Then, my wife excitedly ordered the eggplant rolatina and she was told that they were out. I heard the manager yelling in the background that they hadn't had any for two weeks. But we're not done with the story yet - I then ordered Buffalo Chicken Pizza and was - surprise - told that the manager hadn't made any. Needless to say, at this point I was about to walk out but we were starving... the garlic bread, white cheese pizza and pepperoni pizza all were awesome. I have to say that the food was pretty good - not great - certainly not as good as true NY pizza but c'mon we are talking Knoxville, TN. That said, there is no excuse for being 'out' of any product on the menu. Supposedly the owner/manager was going on vacation next week but it still is no excuse... In this economy, in this day of extreme choice and competition, I'd say that it would be better to simply stay on vacation than to come back and give lousy service.
