Was in Knoxville for a curling bonspiel last weekend and drove by this place several times. Decided to stop in and give it a try. Nice interior with lots of tables, both high top and low. Plenty of booths. Could use a bigger bar to sit at as it was rather small. Lots of big screens if you are into them. Colton was our server and he was fantastic. Very friendly, polite and knew his beer and ciders. Loved having conversations with him. We ordered a flatbread pizza, mini burgers and a bacon, mushroom burger for lunch. All better than average. Mini burgers were black angus and came with American cheese and grilled onions. Very good. I had onion rings and they were just okay. Bacon, mushroom burger was pretty large, had a nice char on it and was very tasty. Flatbread pizza was consumed with no complaints. We tried apple cider, a old barrel cider and a Barnstormer Red Ale. The Barnstormer Red is a malty red which is my kind of beer. Bought four 22 ounce bottles to bring home. My daughter liked the apple cider enough to buy a growler. The Old Barrel cider, not positive that is the name, had a unique flavor because it was aged for a time in used whiskey barrels. I bought a growler of that. This is a go to place in my book and we will be back the next time we go to Knoxville.

Stopped by Friday for happy hour. Good beer and wine specials. Loved the patio space - definitely not your typical concrete cramped patio. The trees, fence, and large spread-out tables make it feel more like someone's back yard. Service was decent. The Greek salad was simple and yummy! I will surely be back!

We had their chicken nachos, pub club, and sirloin with beans and rice.. I expected somethin real from this place, but walked out feeling unsatisfied. Their chicken nachos, pub club, and rice and beans tasted like diner stuff. Very similar to Denny's really. Sirloin was on point; not bad. However, had better. Way better. But guage that, because I was super hungery at the moment. Boyfriend said it tasted salty. The best thing I had tonight were the fries. Nothing special with the fries; maybe it outshined all the other items because the others lacked taste and quality. No beer head to my boyfriends stout. My blonde ale tasted strange...like feet. Service was great, upon arrival with the hostess and our waiter. I wont be coming back here. But on the plus side, they do have live music. Woohoo!
(2)Jane K.
Great beers, fabulous service. The food was above average. They went out of their way to get a space for our large party, which I appreciated. It was not busy at the time, but I know a big group with separate checks can be a pain. Great job, Blachorse!

I love them for the beer and drink menu! Food quality was ok, nothing special but not bad. The ambience is nice, some nice quotes on the wall. I was disappointed with service though. The waitress was not listening to what i wanted, she took ages to come back on the table to check if we need something. May be Friday woes for busy day! But better service would have earned extra star.

Tucked in the corner of Western Plaza near Sequoyah Hills is a gem of patio. It rivals my favorite patios in town, the tables sit at varying heights on painted decks on the side of a slope, surrounded by lush greenery, a canopy of trees and tastefully draped strings of lights. We started with an $8 pitcher of the Belgian White ale, flavored with hints of coriander, tasty, although I must confess I am a diehard IPA fan, so this was not my favorite beer. But at $2 per pint, the price is tough to beat! For an appetizer, we sprung for the signature chips and beer cheese. The dip was outstanding and very addictive, the tortilla chips were average, paper thin, and mostly broken at the end of stack. Too small to enjoy the remaining half-inch of beer cheese. I ordered the blackened fish tacos, I think the fish was Mahi. Not the best fish tacos I've had, but pretty good. I feel like they were missing something to make them outstanding, although I am not skilled enough to determine what that magic ingredient could be. My companion ordered a cajun pasta dish. I tried a piece of penne, the cream sauce was adequately spicy and flavored, and he seemed quite pleased with the dish overall. The service was excellent combined with a nice outdoor atmosphere. I will definitely be returning at least during the warmer months, I am excited to try one their hoppier beers next time as well!

First time here. The steak was perfect. Nice large salad and the sides where good too. Had the coal miners ale. Very good. I'll most likely visit here again when in town.
(5)Chuck C.
I have been several times and everything I have tried has been very good. I certainly recommend it.
(5)Monica I.
My husband and I both got burgers, they were really good. The beers were excellent. Service was also excellent. We will definitely go back, the rest of the menu looked pretty good.

Great place for a low key meal. Friendly staff and the back patio is pretty rad! Trivia, deep booths, and an arc shaped bar which lets you see everyone but you're spread out. Enjoy...

This has become a regular for us when in the Bearden area of Knoxville. They have the best gluten-free pizza we've found (try the White Horse GF), and their wheat-based pizzas are also good. Good beer selection, and I really enjoyed the burger I had the time before last. Wait staff seems generally responsive and several friends recommended this place to us.
(5)Ian G.
Good beer, different takes on ales and they cask age. Food is definitely better than normal pub food. A must try.

Went here for the first time this past weekend and enjoyed it. Was busy as we showed up after the UT game so it was a bit loud, but not unexpected for a college town on a Saturday following a football game. Ordered the beer flight and enjoyed them all for the most part. The local stout was excellent. Waiter was attentive and good. My wife ordered the prime rib, Philly Flat Bread, and I ordered the Diablo burger with the intent of sharing. We had what turned out to be a funny snafu with the flat bread. It came fast but the meat (supposed to be prime rib) looked very white, and tasted like turkey. We called our waiter over and asked if it was prime rib, because it certainly didn't look or taste like it. He looked at it and wasn't sure, but he didn't hesitate to take it back to the kitchen. He returned a minute later and said the kitchen told him it was indeed beef. Confused, my wife and I tasted it again. I know my red meat and there was no way this was beef. It was definitely turkey. I called over another server and asked her opinion, took a piece off and showed her, and she was pretty darn sure it was turkey. Now, it tasted great, but it wasn't what we ordered or wanted. She went to the back and the manager came out and looked at it. My wife and I were laughing about it, not upset and I think that helped diffuse the situation. I told her everything I know about food would be shattered if that turkey was indeed beef. She personally went to the kitchen and made us another one, and that one looked like beef and had the texture of beef. YAY Beef! Turned out to be a mix up in the bins that hold the toppings. No worries at all on our end and they put the turkey Philly in a to go box for us and profusely apologized. We were fine with the way it was handled in the end and frankly we got a laugh out of it. With my confidence in my knowledge of food restored, we enjoyed both entrees. Both tasted great, and I actually recommended they add the Turkey Philly to the menu since it was tasty. Stuff happens when eating out and how a restaurant handles mistakes means a lot to us. Blackhorse handled it well, the food was good and I enjoyed their in-house beers. We will definitely be back.
(4)Aaron S.
Good Food, Good Beer, Good Prices and the outside patio was awesome. I got the Cletus Burger and the wife got the Rachel sandwich. Both were very good. We will be coming back.
(4)Sharon B.
Anything and everything on the menu is amazing. There is a nice patio. The owner is super nice. The service on the patio is slower, but it's still worth it.
(4)Renee S.
Fun place to have a beer! We visited here with a rather large party on a Saturday evening. The wait was a bit long, but the good beer made up for the wait! ;-) The staff are friendly. The food is good. There was live music which was also very good. No complaints at all! I'd definitely go back to eat or drink anytime!

I have given Blackhorse 2 tries. Now, it is still fairly "new" and I am always willing to give an establishment a second chance...but probably not a third in this case. The first time I went, was a Saturday for brunch (which their website advertises on Saturday and Sunday). There was no brunch. Undeterred, we placed drink orders while perusing the menu. 3 of us got beer, which they brew in-house. The descriptions sounded pretty good and had all of the bases covered. However, each and every beer we tried was completely flat. It kind of ruined my taste for the experience so I switched to water. Everyone thought their food was mediocre - flatbreads, salads, spinach dip were ordered. Our server on this occasion was really nice and he was cool about us sending the beer back. I decided upon leaving I would try it out again in a few weeks. Fast forward to my second experience. It was on a Friday night and it was quite crowded. I did try the beer again and it was not flat this time! it was pretty good but not spectacular. Our server....was.....no bueno. She was very aggressive. I think she was trying to be "sassy" or something, but she really just came off like a rude, crappy-attitude-having know it all. She argued about what a Margerita pizza is (which they don't even have on the menu, so why was she talking about it?), her demeanor was incredibly confrontational, she picked up my dad's napkin from THE FLOOR and put it back on the table, saying " you dropped your napkin, what are you gonna do just stand on it?". She didn't even bring a new napkin! I was amazed. So. We left totally unfulfilled and 100% certain about never, ever returning.

I dance at Dance Tonight in the same shopping center as Blackhorse and often stop in after a lesson. I always have a great meal here. The service is always above adequate to great. The beers are fantastic and the pizzas are great! On a weekday night, it's a nice quiet place to shoot some pool and have a few beers. During lunch time, it's a comfortable spot. During dinner, it's a great place to grab a meal with some friends!
(5)Teresa R.
Two visits. Both great. Try the soft pretzels with beer cheese dip. The pizza and flat breads are both tasty. Each visit we sat at the bar and got excellent service. First visit I had the Reuben and I would recommend this to anyone. Great place! Five stars.
(5)Carol W.
Sat down in an empty restaurant back in the corner. No one came for like 10 min. So got up and left. #nofoodreview
(1)Anand P.
Above average place. The beer cheese is amazing, especially on french fries. Really should have an appetizer with their fries smothered in beer cheese. Nice outdoor patio.
(4)Ronald D.
Party of 6 Wednesday night before Thanksgiving. Not a single dissatisfied customer in this group! Pasta, steak, chops, fish and pizza -- all excellent. And an extra bonus if you are lucky enough to have Scott assigned to your table. He was polite, knowledgeable and gave us just the right attention without being intrusive.

I just recently visited this place mid-day during the week at happy hour. Wow, 3 dollar pints and same for the sampler. Very good price for happy hour. I liked the beers, the McGee was the best though. The food was good, but not great, and the customer service was as well. I like the outside seating area. The inside is a little dark though. The place is new, and one of only a few breweries in the Knoxville area. I will return next time I'm here.
(4)Russ H.
We were regulars when this business was here in the 1990s. First visit with the current establishment. Beer sampler was $4.50 for seven 2 oz pours. Beer was stock brewpub except McGee Pale Ale which was different and pleasant. Tunisian Pizza was very good and reminiscent of the previous restaurant. Wife had grilled salmon with asparagus and broccoli. She rated both as "good." Service was friendly and attentive. We will be back to try other items.
(4)Terr B.
Def give this place a chance. Great drink specials!

I visited this place on the Knox Brew Tour (which is incredible). I don't think I'd actually ever been to this place yet, which is odd. I love that bearden area, but for whatever reason I just haven't made it in. Secretly, that piece of real estate is very odd to me, which is really neither here nor there. However, it is funny what seeps into your subconscious when you're picking out an eatery to patronize. Go figure. Back to, I was able to taste 3 of their delicious beers and they were quite great. My favorite was definitely the pale ale, with a close second being the red ale. For the life of me, I can't remember any of the names. I hate that. I also tried the vanilla porter, which is their best seller. It was definitely not my style, but I can see how people would love it. It was like a fruity, frothy, dreamsicle. Anyhoo, the people were super nice and very beer savvy, and the place was comforting. I can't wait to return and try some the awesome looking bar food!!
(4)Katie H.
Blackhorse is a fun little bar/restaurant tucked into Western Plaza. Unfortunately, it is located in one of the infamous locations where nothing stays in business for too long, as it has been several different restaurants before. Give it a try though. They have great beers (try the vanilla). I love their burgers and their beer cheese dip. The outdoor patio is really fun and quaint on a nice day. There are also a few pool tables and darts in one corner of the restaurant, as well as several tables and a large bar. The only thing I don't like is the service. I feel like the hostesses and waiters aren't the friendliest or most attentive.
(4)John G.
Stopped in here during the Know Brew tour, so can't comment about the food or service, but I did like their beer, especially the White IPA! One of the Brewers here is a graduate of the new brewing program at South College which I thought was neat. They do have their beer in kegs, bottles and cans all over town. Enjoyed learning about their history and the origins of their bottle art work.
(4)Keiko M.
The sign was bright but the building was dark. I was not sure it was open. Lucky. I was not hungry but thirsty. I wish they had hefeweizen... I ordered only their beer flight. 6 kinds for $4.5. It's not bad. They are all good for me. No IPA. Stout, pale ale, red ale, etc... Vanilla one is really VANILLA and a little bit sweet. Cream stout is so smooth. My waitress recommend that I should mix these two. Interesting in a good way. Their pizza and humbugger and original cocktails sound great. They have good deal lunch menus around $6-8. Their waitresses are friendly and nice. I wanna have a beer flight and a humbugger next time;)
(4)Patricia G.
We stopped by on a whim and had a really nice night. We sat outside on the patio which never got too crowded. We ordered the apple cider and the red ale. I thought the cider was quite bitter and it reminded me of an IPA. I really enjoyed their red ale and ordered a second one. We got the soft baked pretzels which paired really well with the beers and enjoyed a pizza during the trivia night. Our waitress didn't come by too often which is fine for me. But, she did seem rushed when we first sat down. Overall I would definitely try it again.
(4)Lindsey R.
We went for the first time last night. Our server, Brady, was excellent. We are vegetarians and he made sure to double check with the cook about no meat product in our meal and made several veg suggestions. He was attentive during the meal but not over bearing. Our meal and drinks were pretty pricey but everything we ordered was wonderful and well worth the price. It was too cold to eat outside but we checked out the patio and the atmosphere outside was great and the lights made it very pretty.
(4)John D.
Nice addition to the K-town beer scene. Roughly equivalent to the Downtown brewery. 6 beers plus a rotating seasonal. We liked all but the hefeweisen, which had some weird pesticide-tasting hops in it. They have a convenient beer flight that lets you try them all. The menu had apps, salads, burgers, entrees ($14-22 ish, including a couple of steaks), flatbreads, and pizzas. We ordered a black and blue flatbread (best thing we ordered), pork chops (good, but nowhere near as good as Bravo), Reuben (good), and pizza (disappointing - seemed like the crust was out of a frozen/box). I should have known better than ordering pizza when the best pizza in the Southeast (Hard Knox) is only a couple of steps across the parking lot. All in all, a good experience and we will definitely be back.

Passing through Knoxville and determined that I was going here to eat and drink. That plan was almost thwarted by the atrocious traffic on Kingston Pike coming from my hotel. I imagine locals know ways to avoid that automotive hell. Looked like a good bar, but unfortunately I couldn't get a seat (I had intended to arrive early but ... see above). So I hung out for ten minutes or so in their waiting area - and it's nice that they have one with a comfortable long bench seat - before scoring a bar area window table, which was fine. Good people watching. The first thing I noticed was that it was not loud in the restaurant at all. Sure, they have music playing but it wasn't ear-splitting, conversation-killing painful like many places seem to think is appropriate. I wasn't given a beer list - the only service oversight of the evening - but it isn't too hard to pull up the list on their website. Given that I was passing through town and unlikely to come back to Blackhorse any time soon, I figured I'd go with their 'flagship' offerings. First up was the Barnstormer light. Ummm, maybe it's good that they have a broad selection because this flagship beer wasn't very good. In fact, it tasted off. Maybe just a bad batch. The Coalminer stout, however, was definitely not off. Five stars for that brew. Just the right balance between body and refreshment. Blackhorse has a solid menu. While not huge, I think anyone can find something they might like. I needed some greens so started with a basic garden salad - standard stuff but good. The people next to me had ordered a pizza and that looked appetizing. However, I saw the restaurant offered flatbreads with pizza toppings and that sounded good, too. And a little lighter. Although you can customize, I went with their Italian style. Crisp bread, good toppings. Along with the salad, one of these is a solid meal. As I implied, my server did well. Just the right amount of attention and timing. I could see coming here often if I lived nearby.
(4)Harold B.
Summer fruit salad for lunch was large and very good. The balsamic vinaigrette compliment it well. It tasted fresh. Service was very fast and friendly. Outdoor seating area looked really nice.
(4)Cindy D.
Had brunch here this morning. Had the Nutella french toast and home fries. Just ok, nothing to brag about but not horrible either. Home fries are just deep fried potatoes, disappointing. Wait staff friendly. French toast can use some whipped cream a little more Nutella and cinnamon.
(3)Sarah P.
I have only dined here once, and I must say, I won't be going back any time soon. My sister, my boyfriend, and I brought my father here when he was visiting Knoxville, and I was just so disappointed! I ordered the bourbon salmon, and it was the MOST mediocre meal I have had in a long time. The fish was lukewarm and covered in a cold goopy sauce, which was clearly supposed to serve as the "bourbon" aspect. Yuck! The rest of the group seems to feel the same way about their meals. None of us saw fit to complain to management, but my father so rarely visits town, and I am upset that our dinner wasn't more enjoyable.
(1)Channa P.
The more I go the more I really like Blackhorse. I've only received excellent service, the beer selection is good and frequently changes, and the food is tasty. My happy hour crew began meeting at this place on Sunday nights about 2-3 months ago. We like the $2.00 draft specials and the more quiet atmosphere. We can actually hear each other speak. Most of us choose to get apps or dinner while drinking, and I haven't had a bad meal yet. Not to mention, the sweet potato fries are TO DIE FOR, and I'm basically a fry addict. The pizza and beer cheese is good as well. If you are a beer enthusiast the selection is good, and if you're new to beer there are tasting and flight options as well. I really can't complain, and my Sunday nights at Blackhorse are becoming one of my favorite nights of the week.
(4)Simon B.
Blackhorse has excellent beer. Quite possibly my favorite brewer in Knoxville. They also just recently started bottling it. You also can get it to go in Growlers. They are my favorite because they don't over Hop their beer. You can tell this from how low the IBUs are on all their beer. This won't go over well for lots of folks who like hoppy beer; but for me it is great. Their food is better than average pub food. Their giant cookie for dessert is delicious.
(4)Scott J.
It seems the new trendy thing recently is combing breweries and restaurants; I've had great experiences and bad ones...this one falls right at mediocre. The beer was great; I personally love a high gravity beer and at 11% it was perfect. And it's not that the food was bad, just limited. I felt it was more of a pizzeria than a restaurant. 2 pages of pizza, except they label the first page as "flatbreads. You're not fooling anyone with your fancy terminology. The environment was not much to be desired either; it was difficult to tell whether they were remodeling or just ran out of money to finish decorating. It's one of those places you stop because your hungry and happen to be in the neighborhood, but not worth planning your Saturday night around.
(3)Bonnie D.
Driving thru area to Florida and stopped Black Horse pub for a cold beer and pizza. Sat at the bar. Great service by Bill the bartender. Beer and pizza delicious and came as ordered. Choice of crusts or flatbreads. Had the wedge salad that is made with a balsamic/blue cheese combination dressing and loaded with bacon. Best we ever had even at a 5star steakhouse! Red ale beer $3.50. $7 for large wedge salad. Can't beat price, food, atmosphere. Wish we had a Black Horse brewery near us in Florida.
(4)J H.
We stopped by to grab a beer and a small plate to hold us over for a late dinner date. The beers the wife and I had were both to our liking and the pretzels were damn fantastic. The restaurant had plenty of space and the bar was cozy and welcoming. Service was friendly and quick and overall it was a great experience. Grabbed a couple bottles to go and will be back the next time we are in town.

Although you can customize, I went with their Italian style. Crisp bread, good toppings. Along with the salad, one of these is a solid meal. As I implied, my server did well. Just the right amount of attention and timing. I could see coming here often if I lived nearby.

Summer fruit salad for lunch was large and very good. The balsamic vinaigrette compliment it well. It tasted fresh. Service was very fast and friendly. Outdoor seating area looked really nice.

Had brunch here this morning. Had the Nutella french toast and home fries. Just ok, nothing to brag about but not horrible either. Home fries are just deep fried potatoes, disappointing. Wait staff friendly. French toast can use some whipped cream a little more Nutella and cinnamon.

Woohoo!

I have been several times and everything I have tried has been very good. I certainly recommend it.

Good Food, Good Beer, Good Prices and the outside patio was awesome. I got the Cletus Burger and the wife got the Rachel sandwich. Both were very good. We will be coming back.

Anything and everything on the menu is amazing. There is a nice patio. The owner is super nice. The service on the patio is slower, but it's still worth it.

Def give this place a chance. Great drink specials!
