Been eating here for almost 20 years and I've eaten probably half of their huge menu and not once have i left hungry. From the Vol Burger to the Veal Parmesan you just can't go wrong when ordering here. Very friendly and fast service even when it's packed. If you are passing through Knoxville it's just a short ways off of I-75 so stop in and have a Vol Burger and thank me later. Just be prepared for an amazing collection of Vol memorabilia if you aren't a fan of the Big Orange. Cash only also but they do have an ATM.

One of the best little places in Knoxville! Get the Vol burger with fries; you can thank me later. The burger is delicious and the fries are the perfect combination of crispy and soft. Steak in a sack is also great. Ordering is a little odd, but here's how you do it: -Order what you want. -Go get a drink and sit down. -They'll call out your order, they may even make up a nickname for you when they call it out. -Go get it. -Savor the deliciousness and take in the atmosphere. -Go up and say what you got and pay. -Forgot cash? Use the ATM by the door. -Go home and nap with deliciousness in your belly.

This place is the last of a dying breed of restaurants. It's strange...it is known for its Vol burger, but they have an American-Italian menu too, of spaghetti, chicken parm, etc... I really want to try that stuff, too, but I got the Vol burger. So...BLUF: - It's cash-only. There's an ATM on prem, though. - Vol burger is a MUST! it is just a straight, basic burger shack burger. Trust me - you need this in your life - The onion rings!!! Man those were fried to perfection! - Eat IN!! It's just a good feeling... I remember these types of places from my childhood. There is a sense of nostalgia that really does enhance your meal

This place was a pretty interesting place. Let's just say they were decked out in vol gear. Well, what can you expect? A mom and pop kind of restaurant... and in Knoxville. *Please note, CASH ONLY!* Definitely caught me by surprise, but luckily I had cash on me...if not there's a ATM right in the corner. What did I get? Well, the options are pretty much endless as the restaurant says "whatever you want." So, I sort of modified the Vol burger. I added bacon. I mean it's not that big of a modification, but I was in the mood in just having bacon on my burger. The burger came out pretty cooked well, and it was pretty tasty, but honestly it didn't stand out in my mind that I would just drool over when I thought of the burger. It could be the burger that I got, or just simply that i felt the burger was a little soggy. Maybe its because of the juices that was coming out of the burger. Either way, I'm sure the other selections would be better. The only problem I found for this place was that it's Cash Only. Friendly atmosphere, plenty of seating, and a good choices for food. I'll give this place a second glance if I'm near the area and check out their other menu items.

Great rib eye sandwich! The fries were good too. Seems like a popular place with the locals. The price was good too. Save room for the homemade banana pudding made daily!

I've been multiple times and every time it's great. I always get the hogie on dark with mayonnaise and mustard. Absolutely my favorite sandwich from any place ever. They steam it which gives it a delicious flavor. The hogie comes with salomi and ham and swiss cheese.
(5)Christina B.
I LOVE the Vol burger! Great prices and great selection! Dont forget to ask for the smoked cheddar! The place could use some updating biut the food is GREAT! The kids (teens) like going and we can all find something to eat :0)
(5)Tina V.
Great place! Came here with my daughter. I got the philly steak and she got a bacon cheeseburger.. portions are huge! Food was awesome, we'll definitely come back! Very friendly people, family owned place. The only thing that threw me off was they don't accept cash but there's an atm inside. Glad I found this place!

I moved to Knoxville as a graduate student in 1997. It pains me to say that I had never in the 13 years that I have lived here, patronized this local treasure. In my defense, I was also a strict vegetarian (which is indefensible). We took the family for the acclaimed 'Vol Burger.' I usually run screaming from any and all things labeled 'Vol' or that are decorated in the region's notorious (and hideous) DayGlo orange. Sam & Andy's decor is best described as a journey back to 1982. Vinyl benches as far as the eye can see, vintage laminate table tops, while University of Tennessee sports memorabilia covers the walls. The questionable decor belies the outstanding burger you will experience here. It is big. It is juicy. It is seasoned (though you can--and likely should--ask for additional seasoning). The roll is soft and does what it should--holds the lettuce, tomato and mayo, catches some of the lovely meat juices--and then mainly stays out of your way. The fries...I've not had better, and I am something of a 'fry connoisseur' (all those years of vegetarianism--most of my restaurant meals consisted of a salad & fries). I think they are hand-cut--they are crispy and salty--and in a feat of absolute fry wizardry--they are creamy on the inside. Just amazing stuff, these. If you live in Knoxville, are passing through Knoxville or are a recovering vegetarian, Sam & Andy's should be on the top of your burger list.

Stopped by here on our way back home. We selected this location based on past Yelp reviews and we weren't disappointed. I am glad that one of the earlier reports stated that they don't take credit cards. They do have an ATM on premises, so that is helpful. The food was really good. Of course we stopped by on a weekday during lunch so the place was really busy, but the service was quick.
(4)Kelly G.
This is the best deli in Knoxville by far! The food has always been satisfying...from the Prime Rib Sandwich to the Banana Pudding :-) The cooks/staff are hardworking, and friendly. I would recommended Sam & Andy's to any guest of mine. After all, any place that has a Vol Burger knows what they're doing!!!
(5)Jason B.
I am a rather large fan of "hole-in-the-wall" establishments and Sam & Andy's is one of the few places that fits this billing in Knoxville (especially West Knoxville). Our family loves Sam & Andy's and is a place we probably go at least once a month if not more. They have good burgers, good sandwiches, good dinners like Chicken Parm and on and on. But remember it is a good old fashioned hole in the wall so that means the food is very good but heavy and they do NOT take credit cards. Anyway we love it and recommend it!
(5)Matt C.
Great lunch spot that's a Knoxville institution, though it's bounced around from a few locations over the years. The thing to get here is the steamed deli sandwiches. Delcious stuff, with great selections like smoked cheddar that create a hot, gooey mess in the most delicious sense of the word. I've had the vol burger, but honestly don't see the hype. It's decent.. but the deli is where it's at. Gotta love the laidback vibe and staff, and the old school notion of ordering, then eating, then paying before you walk out, on the 'honor code'. Hope this place is always around, in one location or another.
(4)Tyler R.
I love places like this. No frills, simple, local, inexpensive, fantastic food. I had the pleasure of trying the Vol burger and it didn't disappoint. There's nothing fancy about it, it's just a really, really good burger. I'll definitely be back and can't wait to try out other items on the menu.
(4)Amber F.
This a great place to eat AND a trip back to the good ole days. Can't go wrong with the famous Vol Burger, but don't overlook the daily special. No credit cards, yikes! and the people that say the place "needs some updating"... totally missing the point. To make changes to this place would be like tearing down Neyland Stadium :D
(5)Patrick S.
Great Ruben.... Super fast service. A really friendly family crowd. I will be going back. AAAA+++++ 5 stars
(5)J W.
Greatest place in west Knox. The open face beef reminds me of truck stop favorite ....before the Subways and fast food joints took over the M&P's.
(5)Katherine A.
Tasty burger in local, family restaurant atmosphere. Friendly and efficient staff. The restaurant was clean, casual and the menu was broad with everything from burgers to deli sandwiches to manicotti, spaghetti, gyros and baklava.
(4)Dave B.
Been eating at Sam and Andys since early 70's on The Strip. The Vol Burger is as good as ever. Really good onion rings. We eat here often.
(5)David C.
Just had the Vol Burger special with fries and a drink. Good burger, quite large. Fries were good but the burger as so big I only ate a couple. Very nice crew working there. SEC baseball on the TV.
(4)R B.
Thumbs up. Order the Vol burger! Varied menu from lunch through dinner. Order at the counter, pick up your own, eat, pay at the end of the meal. Cash only. It's a classic "joint" kinda place.
(4)Doug G.
Great burgers, fantastic atmosphere. Lots of fun.

Sam and dang Andy's. Oh, oh, oh how I love you. My father was on the faculty at UT and way back when we first came to town in the 80's he used to take my brother and I to the old location down on the strip. I've been loving Sam and Andy's ever since. What really makes me smile is that mostly the same guys are back there taking orders and cooking up the food who've been doing so for years and years. That's always a good sign to me. This is not gourmet food. Its just awesome food. I've been in town a lot lately, so I've been able to get in there and eat. My wife used to have a jones for McAllister's down in Turkey Creek, but on our last trip home I fully converted her to craving Sam and Andy's. She had one of the subs and wouldn't shut up about how much better it was than any other sub she'd had in Knoxville. Then there's the Vol Special. Nothing fancy. A steam table burger with what you want and a side of fries. The fries here, for me, are the best ever. Oh, and the onion rings are a personal problem (I mean that in a good way :) ). I love them. If you're new to S/A then it might be a tad daunting. You go in, order up, sit down, and they call your order. Pay attention!!! Sometimes he'll call you out by some identifying feature (ex: "Michigan! Your orders up!" for a guy in a wolverine's hoodie). Get your drink from the cooler or the fountain and enjoy. When you go up to pay (yes, you go to the counter to pay!) remember what you got if he didn't give you a ticket. And PAY CASH. They don't take cards!!! But at least they do have an ATM there in case you forgot yours. :) Checks are Ok, I *think*. Some other greatest hits from the menu are the hot roast beef and hot roast turkey. Both of these, served with fries that are also dumped in with the gravy, are old favorites of mine and of my father. He often had one while my brother and I would chow down on burgers or a pizza. The last reason I love Sam and Andy's has to be the unabashedly prominant love for the Vols :) This is Knoxville food that takes me back to my 5-6 year old days, new to the city, and lets me be happy happy happy.

The absolute best deli that Knoxville has to offer. The location on campus unfortunately closed a few years back, but this one is still as good as ever. The sandwiches are amazing (get it on dark bread), the Vol burger is the best in town, and the blue-plate dinner specials are a steal. Main item (usually meat of some sort), two delicious sides and desert for a pretty reasonable price. Nothing but fantastic things to say about S&A. Please give them a shot whenever you are in Knoxville.
(5)Mary T.
This is my favorite sandwich spot and one of my favorite lunch spots in Knoxville! They have awesome sandwiches and are usually packed. My favorites are: Vol Burger, Steak in a sack, and the Philly Cheesesteak. I usually have to box half of my food up because the portions are very large. Everything I have tried here is very good. The owner cooks and takes your order, he is exceptionally nice. They also have the pellet ice, which I think is awesome and it makes the drink that much better.
(5)Erik B.
Not bad for what has been described as a "hole in the wall" establishment. I call it a "nieghborhood" corner restaurant. The staff is friendly and helpful. The Vol burger is what it is, a well cooked burger with fresh ground beef. a lot of seating and you feel at home. The prices are not cheap, $10 for a vol burger fries and a coke. Sam and Andy's is CASH ONLY but there is an ATM onsite.
