Been here many times. The pulled pork is great. The ribs are great. The sweet tea is sweet and all you can drink for cheap likewise for the four or more varieties of Kool-Aid. The beans are good. The pies are good. The fries are good. The sauce is awesome. The slaw is good. I've never had anything bad at Mac's. The price is cheap for BBQ. This ain't McDonald's, but a pulled pork sandwich is cheaper and better than a Big Mac. The food and atmosphere reminds me of eating at my grandmothers as a kid. I thought I had found a hidden gem, but it turns out people from all over the country and world stop in to get some good southern BBQ. I can't believe he ain't been on the food channel or No Reservations. I wish he wasn't so popular. I don't want ya'll to ruin it, but I saw a few low ratings that were recently added. That annoyed me. He used to have no bad ratings and was the highest rated in Jackson. Now he is several places down. I figure it's either haters and/or other restaurants paying for good reviews on them and bad on Mac. That's ok with me. I like my party being the only one there.

Was in town from Chicago for a family function and was looking for authentic southern food. Down home feel with family portraits located around the counter tops. The food was great..catfish was cooked perfect (not too hard and not too soft),had the sweet tea which to my surprise came as a full pitcher. This place is like going to your favorite aunts house and she whips up something's fast but it on point. We ate the pulled pork and fries, which were delectable, the slaw dog was good also as an appetizer. The warm sweet potato pie and chess pie was like my grandmother used to cook. Overall, I will definitely be stopping back at Mac's the next time I'm in Jackson, stop in and check him out.

I went out of my way to go here because of all the wonderful reviews, but I don't know what the big hoopla is over the food here. I threw away most of my dinner and both desserts. I won't be going back....actually hoping I don't get sick from this visit.

Wow, i'm not sure where to start. We were traveling on our way to Memphis when the BBQ addict in me kicked in. My wife searched and found this place. The yelpers who have been here do not lead people astray. I arrived to a shack with a big door that says if it doesnt open, use the window. Well, thankfully, it opened for us. We walk into what looks like someone's kitchen and pull up a seat at a communal picnic table. There is another couple having dinner at the "dry bar". Another family soon joins us at the communal table and we have a short conversation about how we both found the place on yelp. About 10 minutes later our smorgasboard of smoked meat arrives. Ribs, pulled pork, baked beans, coleslaw, bread and kool aid. Everything was indescribably delicious, and I felt so at home i could have probably finished watching the rest of the baseball game if we didn't have to get back on the road. Believe all that is said here, this place is the truth!

Great place!! More like a relative's than a restaurant. I had the pulled pork sandwich with hot sauce and slaw and it was delicious.

I have lived in TX all my life and thought there was no BBQ even close to TX BBQ. I was wrong, this is as good as it gets. The ribs are just amazing and the brisket is a work of art. Potato salad and cole slaw are wonderful. The beans are nothing special. If you are in Jackson, this is a MUST.

Don't be scared off because it doesn't have the flashy chain restaurant looks. Real food made by a real person. Yum.

Closed Sundays. I had bookmarked Mac's while driving through Tennessee a year ago. I drove into Jackson try it but they were closed. Hey Mac, post your hours on Yelp!
(1)Philip D.
Not horrible. Have tried the BBQ sandwich and the beef brisket. The sandwich was ok, the brisket dry. Sides were nothing special. Prices were cheap and definitely better than fast food.

Fantastic late night meal! My colleague and I were working until 9:00pm on Friday night and were starving when we were done. He picked up the phone and called Mac's. Even though he had closed up shop an hour earlier Mr. Morrow exhibited true southern hospitality telling us he'd open up again to feed us. The pulled pork (with the spicy sauce), baked beans and potato salad (best I've ever had) truly hit the spot! Highly recommend a trip to Mac's BBQ!

I love this guy. Mac is so delightful and soooo southern, it's a great Southern experience, which sounds weird, but the food is southern, his demeanour, accent are southern. The food is pretty quick and delicious. We had a lot of it, and it didn't end up being enough and ended up costing a lot more than we thought, because there were 4 of us, but it was a great experience and delicious deep fried food. We went a little out of our way to go, and it was worth it. Definitely make sure to strike up a conversation with Mac while you're there - that was definitely the highlight of the experience.

Off the highway. Very homey place. A man proud of his family! Brisket was very good! Sides were also tasty. Mac is a nice guy.....very personable. Make sure to try the homemade pies his sister in law makes. The Buttermilk pie was awesome!

"Hello." "Umm is this Macs BBQ?" "Yeah." "Thank god. We were just checking if you were open." "We closed an hour ago." "Damn. Know any good BBQ joints in the area? We just got off work and we are starving." "How many of you?" "Just two." "Two? Humph alright come on over. I'll feed ya." Only in the south! Great ribs, ice tea and conversation. Just give this place all your money!

HOORAY FOR HOLLYWOOD!! That would be Hollywood Drive in Jackson, Tennessee folks. NOT the one in southern Cali! Oh No! BECAUSE if YOU believe you know bar-b-que, YOU just don't until you have had Mac's! If you want to sample REAL Southern Style Bar-B-Q made using the Pig aka pork then you need to make a stop off interstate 40 in Jackson which is about the center point between Memphis and Nashville. Mac's Bar-B-Q is off the beaten path and this is the real Southin' Damn Dang Deal!! It may put your trip behind by an hour to get to this place but it is a stop you will not regret. The best way I can describe is that there are a handful of artisans left in the world it seems. Those remaining few dedicated to the craft of whatever it is they do. They do not care here how much time it takes to do something. It is more important for them to commit to do something the right way with pride and proper procedure. A faster created second rate product just won't do at all! The prices are reasonable and the food is to PERFECTION. One side of the old cinder block building you can get your vehicle detailed and on the other side you can have a plate of pulled pork that is about the best I have EVER eaten! PERFECT! Nice outside bark on the meat, tender, not greasy and the hot sauce is an amazing combination of hot and sweet. STUUUUUPID GOOD! The sides of fries or tater' salad or beans are all excellent too. Did I mention that the pork was perfect? Yes. I think I did. Here is the deal folks: This place does not need a Yelp review. This business has a following that is and has always been pure word of mouth. My little "review" here is just me scrawling my graffiti on the wall of cyberspace and to let my Yelp buddies know where an amazing food stop awaits off the busy highway of life. I recommend you slow down, stop and smell the smoked pig. Eat some too. You will not be sorry you did! ROCK ON YELPIES! AND GET ON YO' BAD MOTORSCOOTERS AND RIIIDE !! (if you are driving a minivan I suppose that is OK too. Boring. But ok. Life is short. Play to win. Whatever your game may be.) I am the Mad Yelper Dude and I approve this message !!

Well it is ALL they say it is. I will admit I am not even a BBQ fan, but the ribs fell off the bone and were served with excellent sized sides. We really enjoyed our stop there and are very glad we did. The neighborhood is very dodgy and the building looks the same, but don't let it deter you. If possible, don't go in the bathroom which is shared by the hairsalon/barbar shop, and Does NOT look like it has been cleaned in many many years. So just skip that part, use the sanitizer available and eat on! oh, and eat quick before something else crawls up and tries! And yes even with all that We would go back. : )

5 stars baby. This is a must of you are in or around Jackson. Ribs done perfectly. Sides all good. And cheap!!! And if you live within 25 miles and have never been here. Shame on you.

Armed only with the online reviews... And a desire to introduce the family to something authentic...With five young kids... Aged 2-10... This was definitely a bit of a gamble... But we stopped in traveling back to St. Louis for dinner. Mac was awesome... Food was fantastic and even our pickiest kids finished their plates... Fun evening hanging out with Mac! Thanks!!

Exactly what I look for in a BBQ joint. I was traveling to the area for work and am always looking for the local bbq flavor. This is a small, hole in the wall place in the same building as a barber shop. You walk in and are presented with a single large table with about 8-10 chairs and a small bar area. Mac himself seems to be the only employee, and he is very welcoming and social. When I got there a little after 1pm there were two other diners there who were there were travelers passing through driving across country, and they found the place on Yelp as I did. Mac seemed like he could tell pretty easily who found him on yelp and enjoys the business it brings. Now to the food. After mulling around South Carolina for the last few weeks, I was excited to see brisket on the menu and ordered it with potato salad and fries. The brisket had a great smoke ring and, though I could not identify the smoke used, it was delicious. He serves it wet. The potato salad was very good as were the fries, but obviously the meat was the star. Overall, I was very pleased to be able to find a gem in this part of the state, and if business ever brings me back, I will definitely be returning. Here's a tip: if you enjoy the service as I did, and pay with credit card, you may be disappointed to find that the credit card slip does not have a place for a tip. So if you want to show some monetary gratitude, tell him before he runs your card, or use cash.

We were looking for a good place along 40 to have lunch, read the reviews and decided to try it out. Food was amazing! The kids and husband had the pulled pork sandwich and I had the "Big Moma's Sandwich Combo" It was tasty! Would recommend to anyone passing by. It's a few miles off the freeway but well worth the drive!

Hands down the best BBQ I have ever eaten. Being a Texas boy, I'm not used to the vinegar-style sauce from the east, and down here brisket is king. At Mac's, the brisket was very, very good but the pulled pork ("Barbecue" on the menu) was amazing. The sauce was an interesting vinegar-based concoction with what appeared to my Texas BBQ eyes to be a hint of tomato - but could well be the hot sauce to make the BBQ sauce "hot" - phenomenal. I got a barbecue plate (pulled pork, cole slaw, baked beans) and a brisket sandwich. I ate everything. All of it. It was that good. If you're passing through Jackson, it's a bit off the beaten path but well worth the time.

Stopped by based on other reviews, on our way home from a long road trip, and it did not disappoint!! Mac was so kind and took great care of our family of 6. Pork was amazing and the sauce...so so good!!! Go there and enjoy the homey experience!

My wife, daughter, and I decided to try Mac's while en route to Nashville after reading the many positive reviews on Yelp. We were not disappointed! The pulled pork is excellent, and the pies (we tried the chocolate chess and lemon chess) are even better. Mac is also a really nice guy. Would recommend this place to anyone looking for a true southern barbecue experience.

Very good bbq. Pork was tender and juicy. Ribs were fall off the bone tender. Fries were fresh and hot. The owner was super friendly. Huge menu for a such a tiny little place. I didn't love the sauce, but that's because I prefer a sweet and their selection consists of mild and hot.
(4)Jerry E.
As far as the meat quality, it had a good smoke flavor, and the homemade sauces did not overtake the smoke. I was very impressed by both the mild and hot versions offered. The slaw was also homemade, and quite tasty. The buttermilk pie was great, but the crust appeared to be a frozen store-bought crust. The beans were fresh out of a can, very sad for a BBQ place. The only bread offer was white bread slices, very sad. Hush puppies would have been a better choice. The scariest part of the visit, food wise, was the pitcher that the sweet tea was served in. There appeared to be some sort of mold around the top edge of the clear plastic pitcher. The pork was very good, the brisket was also very good...but the lack of acceptable facilities (bathroom is shared with a men's barbershop), and the possible mold on the pitcher lowers my personal opinion of this business to only three stars. A little more cleanliness and attention to detail would make this a GREAT BBQ place. Mr. Mac is a very nice and accommodating man. I hope he can take these few hints from a knowledgeable client.

Excellent! The ribs are amazing & you must try the chocolate pie! True this is a hole in the wall so if you're looking for romantic atmosphere this isn't it. But the owner is very friendly and. The hot sauce is to die for. Enjoy!

Decent pulled pork sandwich, but it is the people that make this place! Everyone makes you feel at home; it's like eating at your favorite Uncle's house. Go hang out and get some good food!

After living in Jackson for six years and wondering where the heck the good barbecue joint is, I finally found it by following advice on Yelp! (Yay Yelp!) Mac's BBQ is a diamond in the rough. The brisket was fan-damn-tastic and the pulled pork is the best I have had in west Tennessee. The ribs are "tender and saucy" spare ribs (St. Louis style). The onion rings are beer battered and some of the best I've had here. The owner is kind and welcoming. He's got one long table that has ample seating for 20 or so it looked like. I took my wife and kids and we ate well. They've got a family pack with a pound and a half of meat, buns, and two sides for 15 bucks... 50% more meat for $5 less than the competitors. I'm a BBQ sauce guy. I don't put up with souped up ketchup, and his sauce ain't the run of the mill. It's a tomato based sauce with a twang to it if you get mild. Hot has a little more zip to it, but nothing that'll be too much for the average Joe. They've got sweet potato pie and buttermilk pie, and the latter is good enough to make you cry. Don't let the cinder block building scare you: Go see Mac! Take note, folks. That's three five star reviews for Mac's, and he's earned it. If you don't know about this place Jacksonians, you're missing out. Get yourself there, quick!
