Mexican Cuisine
If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.

Portions ALOT smaller, server tried to help but told me to speak with manager. Manager acted if I was in the way of him sitting the next table. Burrito Texano was HUGE always took half home, not now though. There are other Mexican places in town, I'll go there from now on.

This was just OK. The chicken and rice was greasy. The service was good. I felt like I was eating food that had been sitting in a pan for hours in rendered fat and salt. I hat to give bad reviews, but this was just blah....

Pretty typical Mexican joint. Good salsa, fast delivery of entrees, and a lot of Spanish being spoken. Of course the $0.99 xx drafts from 3-8 aren't bad either. It was right next to the hotel I was staying at for the night which made it an easy choice. I would come back.

Good Mexican food is well.......easy to find. It now seems to me that Americans have developed an overwhelming love (or infatuation) with the south of the boarder cuisine. Now most of what we find in and around the greater Memphis areas (200+ miles) would be best categorized as TexMex and not authentic Mexican. Haven been to Saltillo Mexico on four foreign Mission trips and dinned with the locals; I know of what I'm speaking of. At none of the meals was I ever served anything that was "all you can eat buffet style, nor was I ever offered salsa and chips in a never ending bowl. The one time i did ask for hot sauce and tryed to describe a salsa, my host picked some fresh japolino peppers and tomato that were growing in a small courtyard area and proceeded to cut and smash with a fork. My host made the effort to make my request so you can bet your life i did everything i could to eat this Holy Hell cup of Dante's Inferno, while prying that my anti acid and Pepto would protect my gut from seizing up. So please see my angle on this review and the reason behind only 3 stars. Authentic Mexican food is neither spicy or saucy, yet subdued and distinctly flavorful while offering hit of every ingredient that was infused. With that in mind Los Portales is probably the closet thing to true authentic Mexican food I've found in Jackson and every opportunity while visiting or passing trough Jackson I will stop and invest an hour for a good meal. I'd advise friend and family to do the same.

the food here is good, not as spicy/hot as a lot of mexican restaurants, but there is hot sauce available to spice the food up. i had chicken fajitas w/guacamoli, sour cream , lettuce, rice & beans. the chicken was flavorful, good and a generous portion mixed w/peppers & onions. the service was attentive and prompt. if you are around exit 85 on I40 and hungry this place can satisfy you...not great, but good.
